      • Saturday's Diamond Notes
        July 8, 2017

Hottest team: Brewers (5-0 past five games, 8-1 past nine overall)

The first-place Brewers have rattled off five wins in a row to build their lead in the National League Central to 4 1/2 games over the defending world champion Cubs. The Brewers might have had just one All-Star named to Tuesday's midsummer classic, but they have a solid plus-45 run differential and have been playing well as a team. While a three-game sweep of the struggling Orioles earlier this week wasn't something to jump up and down about, an 11-2 thumping of the Cubs at Wrigley Field in a make-up game Thursday and a 9-4 win at Yankee Stadium in the interleague series opener Friday is certain to turn some heads. Milwaukee heads into Saturday's matinee with a 4-1 record against right-handed starters over their past five outings, while gling 5-2 in their past seven interleague road affairs.

Coldest team: Orioles (0-5 past five games, 4-10 past 14 overall)

The Orioles are 0-for-5 on their current road trip, including the first two in their weekend set at Target Field in Minnesota. Baltimore has amassed just 13 runs while allowing 33 during the five-game slid. The O's have a dismal minus-88 run differential, worst in the American League and fourth-worst in the majors behind the Giants (minus-96), Phillies (minus-97) and Padres (minus-123). The O's turn to Wade Miley to stop the bleeding, but they're just 2-5 in his past seven outings against winning teams, 0-4 in his past four road outings and they have won just six times over the past 29 road games overall.

Hottest pitcher: Taijuan Walker, Diamondbacks (6-3, 3.30 ERA)

Walker toes the slab Saturday night against the struggling Reds. He has a solid 3.30 ERA overall this season, much better than his 4.03 career ERA, although his WHIP is slightly higher than his career 1.23. Walker's splits are interesting this season, as he has been much better on the road (2.65 ERA) than at home (3.92 ERA). He is also better in day starts (1.99 ERA), although his 1-2 record pales in comparison to his 5-1 record in evening outings. Walker has never faced the Reds, while his counterpart Luis Castillo has no history against the Diamondbacks. In fact, Castillo is making just his fourth major league start. Walker is 3-0 over his past five starts while yielding one or fewer earned runs in three of the outings.

Coldest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (4-10, 5.01 ERA)

The defending American League Cy Young Award winner has looked anything like a pitcher worthy of accolades this season. He was the first player to double-digit losses, since joined by Ricky Nolasco (Angels) and Tyler Chatwood (Rockies). Porcello has been hit hard this season to the tune of a .303 opponent average while posting a 1.48 WHIP and 5.01 ERA across 111 1/3 innings over 18 starts. The Red Sox are an awful 0-7 across Porcello's past seven outings against divisional foes. The good news for Porcello is that the Rays are just 1-5 over Alex Cobb's past six home outings against the Red Sox, while Boston is an impressive 4-1 in Porcello's past five outings at 'The Trop'.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (18-6-2 past 26 overall)

The 'under' has hit frequently for the Bucs, especially when Ivan Nova is on the hill. The under is a perfect 5-0 over his past five outings and 4-0 in his past four against NL Central foes. The under is 18-6-2 in the past 26 games overall, too, as well as 10-4-1 in their past 15 against divisional opponents. The under is also 10-1 in Pittsburgh's past 11 when coming off a loss. The Cubbies might be able to help out the under, too. The under has connected in 15 of the past 20 overall for the champs, 11-5 in their past 16 at Wrigley Field against right-handed starters and 25-9 in their past 34 games overall vs. RHP. The under is also 12-1 in Chicago's past 13 overall against teams with a losing record. In this series, however, the over is 4-1 in Jake Arrieta's past five starts against the Bucs.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (18-8-1 past 27 overall)

The Rays have been a hard team to figure this season, but the over has been a frequent happening in St. Pete this season. The over is an impressive 12-1 over their past 13 games at Tropicana Field, while going 14-2 in their past 16 overall on an astroturf surface. The over is also 18-8-1 in their past 27 games overall, 17-7 in Alex Cobb's past 24 starts and 11-1 in his past 12 outings against teams with a winning overall mark. Porcello might cooperate, too, as the over is 4-0 in his past four tries against the Rays. The over is also 6-1 in Cobb's past seven assignments against the Red Sox, so plenty of fireworks might be in the offing.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Athletics

The Mariners and Athletics do battle in the Pacific Northwest, and each team is limping to the All-Star break and in need of regrouping. The A's have won just three times over the past 10 games while going 11-26 in their past 37 on the road. They have also won just 21 of their past 70 against NL West foes. The M's snapped a four-game skid on Friday, but they're just 2-7 in their past nine vs. RHP while posting a 1-8 mark in their past nine at Safeco Field. Seattle is also 0-6 in their past six at home against RHP. While a winner might be difficult to pick, the 'over' could be the play with relative unknowns Chris Smith and Andrew Moore squaring off. The over is 5-1 in the past six in this series, and 4-1 in the past five at Safeco.

Betcha didn’t know: The Marlins purchased the contract of Chris O'Grady from Triple-A New Orleans to take the roster spot of the departed Jeff Locke. He can't be much worse than the veteran southpaw, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday. O'Grady's 3-5 record at NOLA isn't terribly impressive, but he was able to post a 3.29 ERA across nine starts and three relief appearances.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-210) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+110) at Rays

Biggest line move: Astros (+130 to +105) at Blue Jays

*MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis*

            *Double-Play Picks

            Oakland A’s at Seattle Mariners (-150, 9.5)*

"I think you’ve got the wrong guy."

That’s A’s call-up starter Chris Smith after hearing he would get the start for the big club in Seattle Saturday. Doesn’t instill a great deal of confidence, does it?

Smith, who is a self-proclaimed 36-year-old stay-at-home dad, has been with the Triple-A Nashville affiliate and will be the oldest starting pitcher in franchise history when he toes the rubber tonight. The right hander pitched just under 25 innings of relief for the A’s in 2016 (2.92 ERA, 29 Ks) and should he get chased early into this start, he’d hand the ball over to Oakland’s awful bullpen, which ranks dead last the American League with a collective 5.08 ERA.

The Mariners lineup will be licking its chops at the plate. Seattle scored seven runs in Friday’s victory over the Athletics and is hitting .265 BA and averaging more than five runs per game inside Safeco Field – the third-best home field offense in the AL.

Seattle marches youngster Andrew Moore to the mound Saturday, who at 23 years old is just 10 years older than the combined age of Smith’s three daughters (talk about two different worlds). Moore has been solid in his first two starts of the season, allowing six earned runs through 15 total innings pitched.

There is just one warning light blinking with the righty: Moore leans on that four-seam fastball and isn’t looking to paint the corners or force hitters to chase his breaking stuff. He has yet to walk a batter but has already allowed three home runs in his limited efforts, which means he’s putting it over the plate.

Oakland doesn’t do much right on offense, but it can swing a big stick and ranks eighth in the majors in home runs (123). The A’s had scored 21 totals runs in the three games before Thursday’s loss, totaling seven dingers in that span. Anything Moore throws over the plate has a chance to leave the ballpark in a hurry against this lineup.

            *Pick: Over 9.5

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals (-133, 9.5)*

The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals will tangle in a late afternoon game at Busch Stadium, with the home team looking to even up the series at one game a piece.

Veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright will get the ball for the Cardinals. He has struggled this season as it appears father time has caught up the 35-year-old his 5.48 ERA is almost a full run higher than last year, which was the highest of his career. The good news for Cardinals backers is that he can still get the job done at home 6-1 on the season.

The Metropolitans will run Zack Wheeler out to the hill today and that normally means a lot of runs. The Over has cashed in 10 of his 12 starts this season. Narrow the sample size to his last three starts and Wheeler's ERA is 18.41, three overs and if you look simply at Wheeler on the road the over has hit in four of five starts.

It isn’t that Wheeler doesn’t have potential but a rash of injuries over the last two years have crippled his development and the 6th pick in the 2009 draft is struggling to catch up.

In the last five meetings between the Mets and Cardinals, the two teams have hit the over in all five averaging a combined 11.2 runs per game.

            *Pick: Over 9.5*

            Yesterday's Picks: 1-0-1

            Season To Date: 85-73-8

            *Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers:

Streaking:* Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (6-5, 3.73 ERA, $95)

There isn’t a lot to be excited about for Phillies fans in 2017. They were never going to be good and no one is surprised to see them with the worst record in baseball a few days before the All-Star break.

One bright spot so far has been 24-year old Aaron Nola, who has shown not only that he belongs in the big leagues but can be an ace. Over his last three starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA, .94 WHIP, and has gone at least seven innings in each of those starts.

Nola and the Phillies are -147 home chalk against the Padres this afternoon.
            *
Slumping:* Wade Miley, Baltimore Orioles (3-7, 5.20, $-137)

When in doubt for a slumping pitcher look no further than the Baltimore Orioles.

It might not be fair to say Wade Miley is in a slump at this point he is what he is, but his last six starts have been god awful. An ERA of 11.69, 2.55 WHIP, and he hasn’t made it past the sixth inning in any of these appearances.

Miley is on the mound today as the Orioles are +124 underdogs today in Minnesota.

            *Saturday's Top Trends:*

Braves are 1-8 in Julio Teheran’s last 9 starts vs. Nationals. +193 @ Washington

Red Sox are 0-7 in Rick Porcello’s last 7 starts vs. American League East. -107 @ Tampa Bay

White Sox are 2-11 in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning record. +123 @ Colorado

Under is 12-1 in Cubs last 13 vs. a team with a losing record. Pirates/Cubs Total: 8

*Weather To Keep An Eye On:*

The forecast is calling for a dry day across Major League Baseball today and no games should be delayed or postponed.

There are a few games that will feature decent hitter’s winds. The Yankees will entertain the Brewers with a 14 mile per hour wind blowing out to straight center field and a betting total of 9.5, the Phillies will host the Padres at Citizens Bank Park with a 13 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field and a total of 8, and the Giants will welcome the Marlins with a 15-17 mile per hour wind blowing out to left field and an Over/Under set at 8.5.

            *Ump Of The Day:*

Paul Nauert gets the pads today at Rogers Centre where the Blue Jays are hosting the Houston Astros. Nauert has been one of baseball’s top homer umpires this season with the home team winning 11 of his 14 appearances (78.6 percent) behind the plate and when the home team is favoured by between -140 and -101 they are 5-0.

This is of course great news for Marcus Stroman and the Blue Jays. The Jays are currently -115 chalk against the best offense in baseball.

              July 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) All-Star rookie Cody Bellinger drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run in the 10th inning and the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Saturday night for their fifth straight victory.

The Dodgers (60-29) reached the 60-win mark before the All-Star break for the first time since 1974. They are just the third team in franchise history to do so since 1933, joining the 1973 and `74 squads that had 63 wins each.

Royals reliever Scott Alexander (1-3) loaded the bases on consecutive walks to Chase Utley, Corey Seager and Justin Turner leading off the inning. He was replaced by Kelvin Herrera. With the infield drawn in, fans chanted ''Cody! Cody!'' as Bellinger worked a full count before walking to force in Utley.

Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer in the second for the Dodgers, who blew a 3-0 lead before tying the game 4-all on Bellinger's 25th homer in the eighth. Ross Stripling (1-3) got the win with one strikeout on 14 pitches in the 10th.

Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth off Pedro Baez, giving Kansas City a 4-3 lead.

              YANKEES 5, BREWERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Clint Frazier hit a three-run homer off Corey Knebel with one out in the ninth, lifting the New York Yankees over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Frazier turned on a 1-0 pitch from Knebel (0-2) for his second career homer and first game-ending shot. He threw his helmet as he approached his teammates at home plate, unveiling his mop of red hair, which was then doused in yellow Gatorade.

Frazier had three hits and a career-high four RBIs in his sixth game. Dellin Betances struck out two in a perfect eighth for New York, and Aroldis Chapman (2-0) struck out the side in the ninth.

Milwaukee left-hander Brent Suter allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The NL Central-leading Brewers had won five in a row.

              RAYS 1, RED SOX 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Alex Cobb pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning and the Rays beat the Red Sox with some help from a replay reversal.

Cobb (7-6) retired 11 straight over one stretch. Alex Colome got the final four outs for his 24th save, finishing Tampa Bay's three-hitter.

The Red Sox put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth. Hanley Ramirez then struck out swinging. After rookie Andrew Benintendi was walked intentionally, Chris Young popped out to end the game.

Boston's Rick Porcello (4-11) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked none in his first complete game of the season.

Jesus Sucre drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the second. The inning was kept alive by a replay reversal of a double-play call.

              BRAVES 13, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Julio Teheran pitched seven strong innings and drove in a career-high three runs, leading Atlanta to the easy victory.

Nick Markakis and Johnan Camargo each had three hits for the Braves, who had dropped three of four.

Teheran (7-6) gave up four hits while walking two and striking out five to improve to 6-0 in nine road starts this season. He singled twice against Stephen Strasburg to improve to 4 for 7 in his career against him.

Strasburg (9-3) was hit on his hip by a line drive from Markakis in the third and left after the inning. He gave up seven hits and six runs - three earned - in his shortest outing of season.

              BLUE JAYS 7, ASTROS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki homered, helping the Blue Jays to the win.

Donaldson hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning for his first homer since June 11 at Seattle and No. 150 for his career. Tulowitzki connected for the second straight game as Toronto bounced back from Friday night's 12-2 loss.

Marcus Stroman (9-5) pitched seven effective innings as the Blue Jays beat the Astros for the 10th time in their last 13 meetings. The right-hander, who was removed from his previous start because of a blister on his pitching hand, allowed one run and six hits.

Marwin Gonzalez homered in the ninth for Houston, which hit into four double plays over the first five innings. Mike Fiers (5-4) yielded three runs and five hits in six innings.

              CARDINALS 4, METS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Cardinals rookie Paul DeJong homered as part of a four-hit game, and Adam Wainwright won his third consecutive start.

Wainwright (10-5) struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed one run and five hits.

Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Jay Bruce hit his 23rd homer for New York, and T.J. Rivera had three hits. Zack Wheeler (3-6) pitched six innings of two-run ball in his second start since returning from the disabled list after being sidelined by biceps tendinitis.

              ORIOLES 5, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jonathan Schoop and Mark Trumbo homered, Wade Miley produced his best start in more than five weeks and Baltimore stopped a five-game losing streak.

Manny Machado added an RBI double to help the Orioles beat the Twins for the first time in six meetings this season. This was just their third win in 11 games.

After Miley (4-7) allowed Miguel Sano's 21st home run, the most by a Twins player before the break since Justin Morneau with 21 in 2009, Schoop trumped his American League All-Star teammate with a towering two-run shot in the fourth inning off Adalberto Mejia (4-4). The ball reached the third deck above left field, estimated by Major League Baseball's Statcast system at 462 feet.

Miley was charged with eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

              PADRES 2, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Austin Hedges drove in the winning run for San Diego for the second straight game, and Jhoulys Chacin pitched 6 1/3 strong innings.

Carlos Asuaje added an RBI triple for the Padres, who have won five of six.

Maikel Franco homered and Tommy Joseph had two hits for Philadelphia, which has lost five straight and seven of nine.

Chacin (8-7) allowed one run and three hits. Brandon Maurer pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save.

Aaron Nola (6-6) tied career highs by going eight innings and striking out nine, but he was the hard-luck loser. Nola gave up four hits and walked two.

              PIRATES 4, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Gregory Polanco hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Ivan Nova pitched three-hit ball into the seventh, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Chicago Cubs.

Josh Bell had three hits and two runs scored, while Francisco Cervelli and Jordy Mercer each drove in a run for the Pirates.

Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber had back-to-back home runs for Chicago, which has not won consecutive games since a three-game streak June 18-20.

Nova (9-6) struck out six and walked one in 6 2/3 innings. Besides the homers, the only other hit he allowed was a second-inning single to Schwarber. Felipe Rivero, who reached 102 on the radar gun, got the final four outs for his sixth save.

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta (8-7) allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

              INDIANS 4, TIGERS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Mike Clevinger held Detroit to three hits in six innings and outpitched Justin Verlander, All-Star Michael Brantley broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double, and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Tigers.

Clevinger (5-3) allowed only one runner to reach second base and won his third straight decision.

Verlander (5-6) gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings and lost to Cleveland for the second time this week. The right-hander struck out six after the Indians snapped his streak of 331 consecutive games with at least one strikeout last Sunday.

              RANGERS 5, ANGELS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre and Drew Robinson hit two-run homers and the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels.

It was the Rangers' fifth straight game with multiple homers as they moved within a game of .500. The Angels dropped to three games below .500 for the first time since May 13.

Beltre homered against Angels starter Jesse Chavez in the third inning to give Texas a 3-1 lead. It was his 452nd career home run, moving him into a tie with Carl Yastrzemski for 38th all-time.

Tyson Ross (2-1) limited Los Angeles to four hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings. Chavez (5-10) allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings. He struck out six and walked two.

              WHITE SOX 5, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) - Tim Anderson homered off Colorado closer Greg Holland leading off the ninth inning, lifting the Chicago White Sox past the Rockies.

Anderson, who also hit a home run in Friday night's loss to Colorado, drove a 2-2 pitch from Holland (1-1) into the stand of evergreens beyond the center-field wall. The win snapped a three-game losing streak by the White Sox and denied the Rockies' bid for successive wins for the first time in three weeks.

David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save, striking out the last two batters, including Charlie Blackmon on a disputed called third strike. Blackmon heatedly argued the call with plate umpire Sam Holbrook, claiming it was low, and threw his helmet and bat to the ground after getting tossed. Manager Bud Black also was ejected for arguing the call with Holbrook.

Trailing 4-3 in the eighth, Colorado evened the score when Mark Reynolds hit a leadoff triple off reliever Tommy Kahnle (1-3) and scored on Gerardo Parra's sacrifice fly.

              • MLB notebook: Indians' Francona resting comfortably at home
                July 8, 2017

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona is resting at home after a four-day hospital stay and undergoing a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Francona, 58, was discharged from Cleveland Clinic on Friday night, the Indians said Saturday. He underwent a cardiac ablation procedure on Thursday for the irregular heartbeat.

Francona returned to his downtown residence during the Indians' 11-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night at Progressive Field.

Francona will not manage the American League in the All-Star Game in Miami on Tuesday night, but the Indians said he is expected to resume his managerial duties beginning next Friday when the team opens a three-game series in Oakland.

--Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg left Saturday's home game against the Atlanta Braves shortly after he was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Nick Markakis in the third inning.

Strasburg had his shortest starting of the year as he allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits in three innings while not recording a strikeout for the first time this year.

Strasburg was hit near his hip with a liner off the bat of Markakis, who reached on the fielder's choice as the right-hander retrieved the ball and made an off-target throw to second on a potential force for a throwing error. He then made a few warmup pitches under the watch of manager Dusty Baker, with Strasburg electing to stay in the game.

The Nationals do not release information on possible injuries during the game so it is not immediately known if the comebacker forced Strasburg out of the game after 65 pitches or if it was the bats of the Braves, who led 6-0 after three innings.

--The New York Mets placed outfielder Brandon Nimmo on the 10-day disabled list because a partially collapsed lung, the team announced.

The Mets made the announcement before Saturda's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. In a corresponding roster move, All-Star outfielder Michael Conforto was activated from the disabled list.

Nimmo was taken to the hospital Friday night after complaining about the way he felt following Mets' game in St. Louis.

"(The diagnosis) is not necessarily real serious, but it's surprising for sure," Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters.

--The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated right-hander Brandon McCarthy from the 10-day disabled list ahead of starting Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals.

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers optioned infielder/outfielder Scott Van Slyke to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

McCarthy, who missed 11 games with right knee tendinitis, last pitched on June 25 against the Colorado Rockies in a wild three-inning effort that included two walks and three wild pitches in the second inning. He allowed five runs on four hits and did not factor in the decision in the Dodgers' 12-6 victory.

The injury that sent the 34-year-old McCarthy to the DL was called a knee strain. In 13 starts this season, McCarthy has a 6-3 record with a 3.25 ERA over 72 innings and has struck out 57 against 20 walks, while holding batters to a .229 average.

                • LEADING OFF: All-Stars Kluber, Fulmer match up before break
                  July 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                  ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN

Cleveland's Corey Kluber and Detroit's Michael Fulmer will face off in a matchup of All-Star pitchers, although neither will appear in Tuesday's game.

Both were chosen to the American League team, but were replaced on the active roster - by Major League Baseball rule - because they'll be starting the final game before the break.

Kluber (7-3) has struck out 10 or more in a team-record five consecutive starts, while Fulmer (8-6) has won his last two starts, allowing five earned runs in 16 2/3 innings.

Both pitchers will be in Miami for the All-Star Game.

                  ---

                  CRUISIN' KERSHAW

The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw (13-2) has made 12 consecutive starts without a loss and is 9-0 with a 2.19 ERA since a 4-3 loss to San Francisco on May 1. The left-hander hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts.

The All-Star will next face Danny Duffy (5-4) and the Kansas City Royals at home.

Kershaw carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his last start and struck out 11 to become the first 13-game winner in the majors this season in a win over Arizona. He lost his bid for a second career no-hitter on an infield single by Chris Owings with one out in the seventh.

Kershaw, who has made seven All-Star teams, has never started in the game. He's not eligible to pitch this year because he's starting Sunday.

                  ---

                  TOMAHAWK CHOPPED

Atlanta has won two out of three against Washington after a 13-0 rout of Stephen Strasburg on Saturday to pull 8 1/2 games behind the Nationals in the NL East.

The Braves will start lefty Sean Newcomb (1-3) on Sunday against the Nationals, who had not yet announced a starter - although manager Dusty Baker hinted toward using Joe Ross (5-3). Newcomb looks to bounce back after the shortest outing of his season when he lasted just 3 1/3 innings in a 16-4 loss to Houston on July 4.

The Nationals were shut out for the first time in 87 games this season, becoming the last National League team to get blanked.

                  ---

                  FRIARS ON FIRE

Trevor Cahill (3-2) makes his ninth start for the Padres, who will look for a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of the three-game series.

San Diego has won five of six overall and clinched a victory in the series with a 2-1 win Saturday, snapping a streak of dropping six straight series in Philadelphia. The Phillies upped their club record before the All-Star break to 23 one-run losses. They're 11-23 in one-run games.

Cahill will face Jerad Eickhoff (0-7), who will make his first start since going on the DL on June 18 with an upper back strain. He will be looking for his first victory in his 15th start.

                  ---

                  MEET THE MATZ

Steven Matz (2-1) will make his first career start against St. Louis, and the Mets left-hander brings a 17-inning scoreless streak into the game. He is just two innings from his career-best 19 scoreless innings in 2016.

The Cardinals will start Lance Lynn (6-6), who needs one strikeout for 858 to pass Harry Brecheen for 11th place on the team's career list.

                  FRANCONA BACK HOME

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona was resting at home following a heart procedure and four-day hospital stay.

Francona was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Friday night, one day after undergoing a cardiac ablation for an irregular heartbeat. Francona returned to his downtown residence during the Indians' 11-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.

The 58-year-old Francona had been experiencing dizziness and an accelerated heart rate over the last month. Following an array of tests, he was admitted to the hospital Tuesday after doctors detected abnormal readings from a heart monitor he had been wearing for several weeks. Doctors hope Francona's noninvasive surgery will correct the arrhythmia, which left untreated could lead to blood clots, heart failure or stroke. They want him to his ease his normal routine, so Francona will skip Tuesday night's All-Star Game in Miami.

Bench coach Brad Mills, who has been filling in for Francona, will manage the AL team with an assist from the Indians' other coaches and Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash, who worked on Francona's staff in Cleveland and is a close friend.

                    • Sunday’s List of 13: Random stuff for a summer day……

                      13) Gregg Popovich is 1,316-612 as an NBA head coach with five championships, but his first year as a head coach at any level was in 1979-80 at Pomona-Pitzer, a D-III school in California.

That team went 2-22. Long way from there to today.

                      12) Clippers-Lakers summer league game Friday night in UNLV’s arena had a huge crowd- looked liked the whole lower bowl was full, which would make it a crowd of around 8,000 people. I bet NBA people are surprised at how popular summer league has become.

$30 a pop for the whole day is a good deal. Can watch four games in an air conditioned arena.

                      11) It isn’t good when your favorite college basketball team has two assistant coaches resign in July; thats whats happening at Western Kentucky. One of the assistant coaches is the godfather of their best recruit, Mitchell Robinson.

                      10) Twins manager Paul Molitor played his last big league game in 1998; Bartolo Colon pitched for the other team that day. Here, in 2017, Molitor will be managing Colon.

                      9) Biggest division lead at the All-Star break since 1910; 2001 Seattle Mariners led Oakland by 19 games. 1986 Mets led Montreal by 13.5 games.

This year’s Astros have a 16-game lead in the AL West.

                      8) Most career home runs without a grand slam:
                      190— Andrew McCutchen, Glenn Davis
                      176— Ron Kittle

                      7) Andy from New York points out that the Cubs are the only MLB team who have zero stolen bases from the leadoff position in the batting order.

                      6) Jim “Bones” Mackay, who caddied for Phil Mickelson for 25 years, is going to be an on-course golf commentator for NBC/Golf Channel. His first assignment is the British Open.

                      5) NBA doings:
                      — Indiana Pacers gave Brian Bogdanovic $21M for two years.
                      — Cavaliers gave Jeff Green $2.3M for one season.
                      — Celtics traded Avery Bradley to Detroit for Marcus Morris.
                      — Warriors gave Zaza Pachulia $3.5M for one year.
                      — Minnesota gives Jamal Crawford $8.9M for two years.

                      4) Tim Hardaway Jr is going to sign a $71M contract with the Knicks; Atlanta declined to match the offer sheet. Tim Hardaway Sr, made $46M in his whole career, and he was a much better player than his son. Go figure.

                      3) James Harden got a 4-year contract extension from the Rockets, supposedly worth $228M, which is $57M a year, and that is eye-popping.

                      2) Canadian team beat the Americans 99-87 in semi-finals of the U19 championship in Egypt. Canada will face Italy in the finals.

[B]1) NBA Summer League story: I was at UNLV a few years ago, watching the summer league— you can bet on these games, but you have to be careful.

I’m sitting there and this really big guy, likely a bodybuilder, sits in front of me, drink in hand. He is explaining fairly loudly to the guy next to him how he is betting on the Timberwolves, who had won their game the day before by 20+ points. The bodybuilder was confident in a Minnesota win.

                      One small problem.

Some teams don’t play the same set of guys every game. Timberwolves had 18 guys on their roster; nine had played the day before in the big win, the other nine were playing this game.

Minnesota’s second group wasn’t very good- they got trounced. The big guy lost his money, wasn’t hapabout it.

NOW THAT IS SOME FUNNY SHIT.......LOL

                        • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

                          — 76ers’ rookie Markelle Fultz suffered a high ankle sprain Saturday night and is probably done for the summer.

                          — Celtics 86, Lakers 81— Laker Nation can rest easy; Lonzo Ball had a triple double.

                          — Raptors are trading DeMarre Carroll to Brooklyn for Justin Hamilton, a salary dump by Toronto.

                          — Dodgers 5, Royals 4 (10)— Los Angeles is 27-8 since June 1.

                          — Padres 2, Phillies 1— Philly is 28-58; 23 of their 58 losses are by one run.

                          — Pirates 4, Cubs 2— Chicago is 4.5 games out of first place, 6.5 games out of Wild Card.
