Hottest team: Brewers (7-3 last 10) at Cubs

Independence Day has passed and Milwaukee still sits atop the NL Central, owning a three-game advantage over Chicago. The Brewers pulled off a three-game sweep of the slumping Orioles at Miller Park, while finishing off their homestand at 5-1. Milwaukee’s longest winning streak is this season is four game, in which it has accomplished three times, but looks to equal that number with a victory at Wrigley Field this afternoon.

The Brewers and Cubs hook up for a make-up contest before Milwaukee heads to the Bronx for its final series prior to the All-Star break. Zach Davies heads to the mound for the Crew today, as Milwaukee has won five of the right-hander’s last six starts. The Brewers have dropped five of eight meetings to the Cubs this season, including three of five matchups at Wrigley Field.

Coldest team: Mariners (2-8 last 10) vs. Athletics

Seattle can’t buy a victory at Safeco Field recently after dropping its seventh straight home contest on Wednesday. The Mariners overcame a 4-0 deficit to the Royals by scoring six unanswered runs, but eventually lost in extra innings, 9-6. In six of those losses, Seattle has been listed as a favorite, which is the role the M’s are in tonight to begin a four-game set with the Athletics.

Sam Gaviglio takes the hill for the Mariners in the series opener, as Seattle has cashed the UNDER in each of his past five starts. The M’s have won four of Gaviglio’s five home starts this season, while Seattle has captured three of the past four meetings with Oakland.

Hottest pitcher: Jacob Faria, Rays (3-0, 2.23 ERA)

Faria squares off against AL Cy Young front-runner Chris Sale as the Rays and Red Sox begin a four-game series at Tropicana Field. The Tampa Bay right-hander has put together five quality starts in his first five outings of his rookie campaign. The Rays have won four times when Faria has started, while pitching at least six innings in each outing. What’s even more impressive is the 7/1 strikeout to walk ratio for Faria by striking out 35 batters compared to issuing five walks. The Red Sox are making their first trip to Tampa Bay this season after winning four of the first seven meetings with the Rays.

Coldest pitcher: Josh Tomlin, Indians (4-9, 6.17 ERA)

Since the start of June, Tomlin has been the ultimate fade when he takes the mound. Cleveland owns a 1-5 record in this stretch with the only victory coming against the Dodgers, 12-5 as a short home underdog. Tomlin has been extremely consistent (in a bad way) during this stretch by allowing at least four runs in five straight starts, while yielding eight home runs in his past four outings. Tomlin and the Indians try to avoid the sweep against the Padres as Cleveland has compiled an 0-4 record when the right-hander starts as a favorite of -165 or higher this season.

Biggest OVER run: Astros (5-0 last five)

Houston’s explosive offense continues to rake after scoring 26 runs in a pair of blowouts over Atlanta the last two nights. The Astros have plated 41 runs during its four-game winning streak, while scoring at least five runs in 13 of their past 14 victories. Right-hander Lance McCullers, Jr. makes his ninth road start of the season for Houston as the Astros have finished UNDER the total in five of his past six outings away from Minute Maid Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (6-0 last six)

When Cincinnati loses, normally it doesn’t score many runs. The Reds have posted three runs or fewer in each of their last six defeats, while coming off a 5-3 defeat to the Rockies on Wednesday. Cincinnati wraps up its series at Coors Field this afternoon, sending out right-hander Sal Romano, who is making his first start since a 4-2 loss to Milwaukee on April 16. Colorado’s Tyler Chatwood has been one of the top UNDER pitchers this season by going 7-1-3 to the UNDER in his last 11 starts.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles is starting to open up the gap in the NL West between them and Arizona heading into the All-Star break. The Dodgers own a four-game edge over the Diamondbacks following Wednesday’s 1-0 shutout as L.A. seeks the home sweep tonight at Chavez Ravine.

After Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood posted magnificent pitching performances in the first two victories, the Dodgers turn to another southpaw in the finale as Rich Hill takes the mound. Hill is coming off his best outing of the season after tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out 11 in an 8-0 rout of the Padres last Saturday. In his previous start against Arizona in April as a -190 favorite, Hill lasted only three innings before exiting due to injury in a 3-1 defeat.

Arizona looks to avoid its first road sweep of the season as fireballer Robbie Ray tries to shut the Dodgers. Ray lost for the first time in his previous eight starts in a 6-3 setback to the Rockies in his last outing, but Arizona owns a solid 6-1 record in his seven road assignments this season. Since last July, the D-backs have won four of Ray’s last five starts against the Dodgers, including a 2-0 mark in 2017.

Betcha didn’t know: The Blue Jays have slumped to a dreadful 1-9 record in their last 10 series openers. Toronto will have a tough time trying to turn around that cold skid as the Blue Jays host the Astros, who have put together a terrific 30-9 road record. To make matters worse, Toronto has dropped seven of its past nine games at Rogers Center, but won two of three home meetings with the Astros last season.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-180) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: D-backs (+140) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Pirates (-125 to -135) at Phillies

                  BOXING

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) The World Boxing Organization will re-score the Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn welterweight title fight because of the contentious unanimous decision awarded to the Australian challenger, but there is no plan to change the result.

The WBO was responding to a Philippines government department's request to review the fight after Pacquiao said the decision against him Sunday was unfair.

The Philippines Games and Amusements Board (GAB) said it based the request on protecting boxing's integrity, citing possible miscalls by the referee and judges. But the WBO reiterated its only hope of revoking the fight judges' decision rests on proving fraud in match officiating.

                  BAYLOR SEXUAL ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Baylor University has agreed to settle a federal lawsuit with a former student who accused the nation's largest Baptist school of fostering a ''hunting ground for sexual predators'' and mishandling her alleged attack in 2015.

A settlement notice was filed in federal court in Waco, Texas. No details were released, but the agreement marks Baylor's first settlement to resolve a cascade of lawsuits over the past 18 months by women who said they were attacked and had their cases ignored or bungled by the university for years.

Baylor has settled with at least three other women who were attacked but did not file lawsuits, and still faces five federal Title IX discrimination lawsuits from more than a dozen women. The school also faces state criminal and federal civil rights investigations, and an NCAA probe into the athletic program.

                  PRO BASKETBALL

                  DALLAS (AP)
                  - Dirk Nowitzki has a deal with the Dallas Mavericks that sets him up to join Kobe Bryant as the only players to spend 20 seasons with one NBA franchise.

Nowitzki signed a two-year, $10 million contract that carries a team option in the second season. A person with knowledge of the deal contract provided specifics on condition of anonymity because the team didn't release the terms.

The agreement is similar to the one the Mavs and Nowitzki reached last year, although for significantly less money. Last year's contract was for two years and $50 million, and the club declined its option before free agency opened this year.

                  ATLANTA (AP)
                  - A former security manager at the arena where the Atlanta Hawks play says white entertainers performing there were allowed to bypass security measures while similar requests by black entertainers were denied.

Alleging racial discrimination, Samuel R. Hayes III filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against Atlanta Hawks LLC, which operates the arena. The lawsuit says Hayes was fired because he's black and because he complained about security measures that he says were selectively enforced based on race.

The Hawks hired Hayes in August to work as manager of security operations at Philips Arena and for the team, the lawsuit says. He was fired April 28.

It became obvious to Hayes that race, not safety, was the deciding factor for which celebrities were allowed to bypass security measures, the lawsuit says.

                  COLLEGE FOOTBALL

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Three former Michigan State football players accused of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this year have been dismissed from the university.

School spokesman Jason Cody said Josh King, Donnie Corley Jr. and Demetric Vance were dismissed for violating the school's relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy. The three were dismissed from the football team last month after criminal charges against them were made public .

King was charged with first- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct and with distributing an image of an unclothed person. Vance and Corley face third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.

                  BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Angel Hernandez, who sued Major League Baseball this week alleging racial discrimination, is among the umpires for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Miami.

Hernandez will be at first base as part of a crew headed by Joe West. Hernandez was at third base for both the 1999 All-Star Game in Boston and the 2009 game in St. Louis.

Under the umpires' labor contract, MLB must notify umpires of All-Star Game assignments at least 30 days in advance of the game.

West last month became the third umpire to work 5,000 regular-season games, following Bill Klem and Bruce Froemming. He worked third base for the 1987 All-Star Game at Oakland and was behind the plate for the 2005 All-Star Game at Detroit.

                  • MLB notebook:Turner, Moustakas win final fan All-Star vote
                    July 6, 2017

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner and Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas won the fan balloting for the final roster spots for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Miami, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.

Turner drew a record 20.8 million votes to earn a spot on the National League All-Star team. The previous record was the 19.7 million Atlanta's Freddie Freeman received in 2013.

Moustakas garnered 15.6 million votes to win the American League balloting. It is the second time in the past three seasons that Moustakas won the AL fan vote.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts was second behind Moustakas. In the NL, Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant finished second.

Turner is batting .384 with eight homers this season. Moustakas has already established a career best with 25 homers and is hitting .275 with 54 RBIs.

--New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius hit the ground running on after waking up to find out he was third out of five in the American League All-Star voting that ended later in the day.

Gregorius, seeking more votes from his home base in New York, went to the subway and offered customers free rides if they'd support his cause in the Final Vote.

                    It didn't help.

--Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw will take his normal turn in the rotation for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals, thereby making him ineligible to pitch in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Pitchers who start their team's final game before the All-Star break aren't eligible to compete in the Midsummer Classic.

A replacement hasn't been named for Kershaw (13-2).

--Angel Hernandez, who sued Major League Baseball this week alleging race discrimination, was named as one of the umpires for the upcoming All-Star Game in Miami.

Hernandez will serve as a first-base umpire on a crew headed by Joe West, who was behind the plate for the 2005 All-Star Game.

A big-league umpire since 1993, Hernandez, who was born in Cuba, alleges in his lawsuit that MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre purposely kept him from working World Series games in the last decade and from being promoted to a crew chief.

The rest of the crew for Tuesday's All-Star Game includes Mark Carlson (second base), Chris Conroy (third base), Manny Gonzalez (left field) and Mike Estabrook (right field). The replay umpire in New York will be Doug Eddings.

--San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto was scratched from his scheduled start against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon because of an inner ear infection.

Right-hander Chris Stratton made his first major league start in place of Cueto and he was the loser in the Tigers' 6-2 victory.

--Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber's stay at Triple-A Iowa is over with manager Joe Maddon convinced a hitting slump for the left-handed power hitter is also coming to an end. Schwarber rejoined the team and was installed in the starting lineup for the series finale with the Milwaukee Brewers, batting fifth and playing left field.

Schwarber went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

--Armed with a complete no-trade clause and personal postseason history strong enough to draw a crowd, Tigers ace Justin Verlander feels at ease amidst swirling trade speculation.

"I'm worried about pitching, I'm worried about recovery, I'm worried about what I have to do to be successful," Verlander said as multiple reports linked the Tigers and Cubs on trade talk centered around the veteran right-hander. "And the good news is my body and arm feel fantastic -- best it has in a long time."

At 34, Verlander is owed $56 million for the next two seasons and has an automatic vesting option for 2020 at $22 million should he finish in the top five in Cy Young Award voting.

                    • LEADING OFF: Scherzer's All-Star tuneup, Brewers visit Bronx
                      July 6, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                      SCHERZER'S TUNEUP

Max Scherzer makes his final start for the Nationals before possibly starting Tuesday's All-Star Game in Miami. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner leads his league in strikeouts (163) and ERA (1.94), and he's a strong candidate to pitch first for the NL next week, especially with Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw holding out because he's pitching Sunday. Scherzer (10-5) is slated to pitch for Washington against Atlanta knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (6-5, 4.44).

                      FIRST-PLACE BREWERS IN THE BRONX

Ryan Braun and the surprising Brewers (48-40) arrive at Yankee Stadium with a four-game winning streak and a 4 1/2-game lead in the NL Central over the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs. ''Certainly, we're not taking anything for granted,'' Braun said. ''We understand how great they are, how talented they are, but the deeper we get in this thing and remain in the same position, the more confident we become as a group.'' Junior Guerra (1-3, 4.93) pitches for Milwaukee against rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery (6-4, 3.62) and the struggling Yankees, who have dropped 16 of 22.

                      SIGNING DAY

No. 2 overall draft pick Hunter Greene and the Cincinnati Reds are coming down to the wire on a deal. Teams have until 5 p.m. EDT to sign their picks from last month's draft, and Greene is among a handful of first-rounders yet to announce an agreement. Greene could get the biggest bonus since pool restrictions were instituted in 2012, surpassing the $7,005,000 given to Rays pitcher/first baseman Brendan McKay this year. Greene was a pitcher and shortstop at a California high school, but his future is likely on the mound, where he can hit triple digits from the right side.

                      CHART CLIMBER

Ichiro Suzuki is one hit shy of tying Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson for 23rd place in major league history as the Marlins begin a three-game series in San Francisco. Suzuki had two hits against St. Louis on Thursday, upping his total to 3,054 and passing Rod Carew on the career list. That made Suzuki the all-time hits leader for foreign-born players. Carew is from Panama.

                      WELL RESTED

Jacob deGrom (8-3, 3.55) looks to extend his recent run of dominance for the Mets when he faces All-Star righty Carlos Martinez (6-7, 3.15) and the Cardinals in a marquee matchup. The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year, deGrom is 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in his last four starts. He was scheduled to pitch Wednesday against Washington, but that game was postponed by rain and the Mets were off Thursday. New York has lost three straight.

                      BLISTER BOYS

Aaron Sanchez comes off the disabled list to start for Toronto at home against Jose Altuve, George Springer and the major league-leading Astros. Sanchez, who was sidelined by a blister, made his second minor league rehab start Sunday, allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings for Triple-A Buffalo. He threw 76 pitches. Blue Jays teammate Marcus Stroman left his most recent outing with a blister as well, prompting him to point a finger at Major League Baseball. ''I feel like it's an epidemic that's happening across the big leagues now, a bunch of pitchers getting blisters, guys who have never had blisters before. So for MLB to turn their back to it, I think that's kind of crazy,'' a frustrated Stroman said at Yankee Stadium. ''I have no theory. But obviously, I mean, it's not a coincidence that it's happening to so many guys all of a sudden.'' Asked if he was implying all the blisters have something to do with an altered baseball, he would only repeat: ''It's not a coincidence.''

                      BANGED-UP BOGAERTS

The Red Sox are hoping for a quick recovery for shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who has a bruised right hand after being hit by a pitch Thursday from Tampa Bay's Jake Faria. Bogaerts has had a tough week - he also sat out Monday with tightness in his left groin and came up short in the final fan vote Thursday for next week's All-Star Game. The 24-year-old Bogaerts is batting .308 with six homers and 41 RBIs this season.

                        July 6, 2017

Hottest team: Royals (6-1 last seven) at Dodgers

Following a pair of World Series appearances in 2014 and 2015 (including a title), the door seemed to close on Kansas City after 81-81 last season. A poor start to 2017 started the fire sale rumors of several key players by the All-Star break, but those whispers have disappeared after Kansas City caught fire and went on an 18-6 run. The Royals begin the weekend one game behind Cleveland atop the AL Central as Kansas City is fresh off a three-game road sweep of Seattle.

The Royals remain out west to finish the first half and will be tested against the NL West-leading Dodgers. Jason Hammel takes the mound in the series opener as Kansas City has dropped four of his five road starts this season. However, Kansas City has fared well on the road inside interleague play this season by posting a 4-1 record against NL West squads San Diego and San Francisco.

Coldest team: Rockies (3-12 last 15) vs. White Sox

Colorado has failed to win a series in its last five tries, but the Rockies split a four-game set with the Reds on Thursday. The usually reliable Rockies’ offense has dried up during this stretch as they have scored three runs or less in 10 of their past 11 losses, but Colorado has put together a solid 7-1 record in its past eight home series openers.

The Rockies close out the first half with an interleague series against the White Sox at Coors Field as German Marquez takes the mound. Marquez is winless in his last two starts, but Colorado has won each of his past three home outings, while allowing three earned runs in 19.2 innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Jacob deGrom, Mets (8-3, 3.55 ERA)

deGrom received an extra two days of rest after New York’s game against Washington on Wednesday was rained out. The New York ace is coming off a dominating June after getting lit up at Texas in a 10-8 loss. deGrom posted a perfect 4-0 record in his last four starts of the month, while allowing four runs (three earned) and striking out 31 batters. The right-hander has tossed at least eight innings in two of his previous three road starts as the Mets travel to St. Louis to face the Cardinals.

Coldest pitcher: Clayton Richard, Padres (5-8, 4.85 ERA)

San Diego is heating up of late after capturing a road series victory at Cleveland. The Padres head to Philadelphia this weekend as Richard is winless in his last three starts. The southpaw was knocked around in his past two outings at home against the Dodgers and Tigers, allowing 18 hits and 12 earned runs in 10.2 innings of work. To make matters worse, the Padres own a 1-6 record in Richard’s last seven road starts since knocking off the Dodgers as a +200 underdog in the first week of the season.

Biggest OVER run: White Sox (6-0 last six)

Chicago’s pitching has been touched up recently by allowing 14 runs in the last two losses at Oakland, while giving up at least five runs in five of the past six games. The White Sox’ offense hasn’t been bad lately by plating four runs or more in seven consecutive contests, while putting up 26 runs in its past four games on the highway. Chicago heads to Colorado where that streak can continue as Friday’s starter Derek Holland has cashed the OVER in eight consecutive away starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Giants (7-1 last eight)

San Francisco was the biggest disappointment in the first half, but the Giants have won seven of their last nine games. The Giants return home from a six-game road swing to host the Marlins looking to head into the All-Star break on a high note. San Francisco finished UNDER the total in all three games at Detroit, although each total closed at 10 or higher. Matt Moore has been nearly an automatic UNDER at AT&T Park this season as the Giants are 6-1 to the UNDER in the southpaw’s seven home starts.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Yankees

Two teams going in different directions hook up for an interleague set in the Bronx this weekend. Milwaukee has won seven of its past eight games after destroying Chicago in a make-up game at Wrigley Field on Thursday, 11-2. The Brewers have allowed five runs in the past four games, while building a 4 ½-game advantage over the Cubs in the NL Central.

The Yankees put together a six-game winning streak in early June, but the Bronx Bombers have slipped the last three weeks by compiling a 6-16 record the last 22 contests. New York looks to extend its hot streak in series openers to five with a victory on Friday as Jordan Montgomery takes the mound. Montgomery is unbeaten in his last six starts as the Yankees are 4-2 in this span with the two losses coming by one run each.

Brewers’ right-hander Junior Guerra has struggled of late by lasting only four innings in each of his past two starts, losses to the Reds and Marlins. However, Guerra thrived in his largest underdog spot of the season, which also came in New York as he tossed six scoreless innings in a 7-1 rout of the Mets on May 31 as a +180 ‘dog.

                        Betcha didn’t know:
Detroit and Cleveland are hooking up for their fourth series of the season. In the first three series, the Tigers have won the opener each time, cashing as underdogs of +140, +125, and +110. Detroit opened up as +180 underdogs on Friday at Cleveland as Jordan Zimmermann seeks his first win as a road ‘dog this season in seven tries.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-275) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Padres (+115) at Phillies

Biggest line move: Astros (-115 to -130)

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

                              13) Braves 5, Nationals 2— Start of game was delayed over three hours, but it never rained. Seriously. Game started after 10pm, local time. It was supposed to rain, but it never did. Whoops.

Fans who had tickets last night get two freebies to another game; fans who stayed for the game got all kinds of food free during the game.

                              12) NBA happenings:
                              — Rudy Gay got $17M for two years from the Spurs.
                              — Kelly Olynyk got $50M, four years from Miami.
                              — Miami retained James Johnson: four years, $60M.
                              — Sacramento gave 40-year old Vince Carter $8M for one season.
                              — Clippers gave EuroLeague star Milos Teodosic $12.3M for two years.

                              11) Milwaukee Brewers are 48-40, only NL Central team over .500; they lead the division by 4.5 games. Very surprising.

                              10) Raiders’ QB David Carr’s new contract with the club is worth a lot more because the Silver and Black are moving to Las Vegas. Had the Raiders stayed in Oakland, because of California tax laws, Carr would’ve gotten paid $8.7M less, after taxes.

                              9) Apparently the going rate for an NBA general manager is $4M a year; Cavaliers offered Chauncey Billups $1.5M a year, then upped the offer to $2M, which is why Billups declined.

                              8) Dodgers’ Alex Wood is 10-0, with a 1.67 ERA. Who saw that coming?

                              7) Marlins’ President of Baseball Operation Michael Hill has been given a 5-year, $10M contract extension; this confuses me, because the Marlins aren’t good, and their payroll is a mess that will have to be dealt with before the team is sold.

And what if the new owners want a new guy in charge? They have to pay Hill $10M to go away?

                              6) Iona-Manhattan are playing a basketball game at Nassau Coliseum this coming season; I’m curious which school gave up a home game, unless it is a 2-year deal, and they both will. One of the better rivalries in the mid-major MAAC.

                              5) In 1969, Baltimore’s Dave McNally was 13-0 at the All-Star break, the most wins by a pitcher without a loss before the All-Star break.

                              4) 34-year old DeAngelo Williams is an NFL free agent; he tried his hand at pro wrestling last weekend, taking part in Impact Wrestling’s pay-per-view Sunday, after practicing for only three days. Wrestling fans said Williams did really well in the ring, but he still wants to play football.

                              3) I was at a funeral home last night that had valet parking; never saw that before. Parking lot wasn’t very big, not sure why they needed it.

                              2) Cubs are defending world champs, but they’ve only got one guy in the All-Star Game, and that guy wasn’t on their team last year- could be first time that has ever happened.

                              1) Dodgers 5, Arizona 4— LA tore the hearts out of the Diamondbacks’ chests by scoring four runs in the ninth inning- they swept this series, now lead the NL West by 5.5 games.
