Hottest team: Red Sox (6-0 last six, 8-1 last nine)

Andrew Benintendi hit a pair of homers, finishing 5-for-5 while driving in six as the Nos. 5-9 hitters in the Boston lineup went a ridiculous 16-for-24 (.667) in an 11-4 rout of the Rangers on Tuesday night. The onslaught made up for Mookie Betts going 0-for-6 in leaving eight men on base as the Sox scored in six of nine innings and led 11-0 before Texas got on the board against their bullpen. David Price struck out nine over six scoreless frames, which combined with New York's home loss to Toronto, helped increase Boston's AL East lead to a season-high four games. The Red Sox seek out a season-best seven-game winning streak and consecutive series sweeps for the first time in 2017 as they send Doug Fister (0-1, 4.91 ERA) to the mound in Arlington for his third start with the club. Following the game, the team will leave for Tampa Bay, where they'll play four against the divisional rival Rays prior to the All-Star break.

Coldest team: Rockies (2-11 last 13)
Colorado assembled seperate winning streaks of six and seven games in June and sat atop the NL West after Nolan Arenado helped beat the Diamondbacks with an eighth-inning two-run triple on June 20. The terms "magic" and "destiny" were being thrown around, perhaps tempting fate given what has transpired since. The Rockies lost the last two home games of their series against the Snakes and then went 1-8 on a road trip where they exclusively played division rivals. After beating the Reds for its first win this month to open the week, Colorado suffered an 8-1 Independence Day loss at the hands of the previously winless Homer Bailey, who came in with an ERA of 27.00. The under is 6-0-1 in their last seven games and 8-2-1 over the Rockies' last 11 since they've scored three or fewer runs in eight of those games. Staff ace Jon Gray returned from the disabled list after missing two months due to a broken bone in his left foot and won the only game on that aforementioned ill-fated road trip, striking out 10 over six innings in a 6-3 win at Arizona. He'll be making only his second start at Coors Field this season, his first since April 8, and has Colorado installed as a substantial favorite (-160) against Cincinnati despite last night's poor showing.

Hottest pitcher: Jason Vargas, Royals (12-3, 2.22 ERA)
After the Padres pulled off a stunning 1-0 July 4th upset of Corey Kluber and the Indians, Kansas City climbed to within 1.5 games of the AL Central lead. That's quite an accomplishment considering they went 7-16 in April, but the Royals have gone 21-10 since June began and will look to sweep Seattle before moving on to Dodger Stadium for a weekend series. Vargas gives them a great shot at breaking out the brooms considering he leads the AL with 12 wins and has compiled a 2.22 ERA, allowing more than three runs in just one of his 16 starts this season. The left-handed Vargas went 36-42 over a four-year stint with the Mariners from 2009-12, so he's no stranger to Safeco Field. He'll be facing the M's for the first time this season but has won seven consecutive starts, which includes victories over the Indians, Giants and Angels on the road. Despite Vargas' dominance, the Royals are an underdog (+115) against Seattle southpaw Ariel Miranda, who threw seven scoreless innings against the Angels in a 10-0 win last time out and pitched at least seven frames in four of his six June starts.

Coldest pitcher: Andrew Cashner, Rangers (3-7, 3.87 ERA)
After allowing two or fewer earned runs in seven of his first eight starts, Cashner's resurgent season hit a rough spot in June. He gave up four or more runs in three of his four starts last month, losing all of those decisions by a combined margin of 24-8. He also landed on the disabled list with an oblique strain and returned last Thursday in Cleveland only to give up five runs in five innings in addition to getting drilled in his pitching arm by Edwin Encarnacion's flying broken bat. X-rays were negative and he suffered only a contusion, so Cashner hopes there won't be any lingering effects against Boston as he makes only his second home start since May 17. The TCU product is 1-2 with a 3.10 ERA in Arlington despite issuing more walks (13) than strikeouts (12) and allowing opposing hitters to bat a robust .291 with five homers over his five starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (7-1 last eight, 16-5-1 last 22)

Jameson Taillon and the Pittsburgh bullpen combined to blank the Phillies 3-0 yesterday despite the fact that slumping Tony Watson single-handedly tried to blow the shutout in the seventh before being bailed out. The win snapped a four-game losing streak, but runs have been hard to come by for the Bucs of late as they've plated more than four in only three of their last 13 games. They'll run into promising Phils rookie Ben Lively but are favored heavily (-150) on the road behind ace Gerrit Cole (6-7, 4.51) despite the fact he's struggled in allowing 18 home runs over his 17 starts.

Biggest OVER run: White Sox (5-0 last five)
Chicago rallied to tie Oakland in the top of the ninth on Tuesday, but the bullpen served up a game-winning homer to rookie Franklin Barreto in a 7-6 loss. The White Sox missed closer David Robertson, who is currently on paternity leave after welcoming a daughter to the family on July 4th. With the bullpen in disarray and Mike Pelfrey (3-6, 4.13) attempting to work out of a slump that has seen him win a single decision over his last seven starts, completing six innings only once in that span, it's no surprise to see the A's heavily favored (-180) with ace Sonny Gray on the mound for Wednesday's matinee series finale. Chicago has averaged 6.2 runs per game over this stretch of high-scoring games, but have surrendered that exact amount as well.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks at Dodgers
These are two of only four teams in the majors currently at 50 or more wins, so there's no doubt that this series between the NL West's top teams provides baseball's marquee matchup for the next two days. L.A. improved to an MLB-best 34-11 at home by winning the series opener 4-3 behind Clayton Kershaw, but Arizona cashed late for run-line bettors that took the +1.5 on a three-run homer from Daniel Descalso off closer Kenley Jansen with two outs in the 9th. We'll see if that momentum carries over for the Snakes as they take on undefeated Alex Wood (9-0, 1.83), who was shocking left off the NL All-Star team despite the fact he's just 8.1 innings shy of qualifying for the league lead in ERA. Arizona righty Zach Goldley hasn't given up more than three runs in a start this year, potentially setting up a pitcher's duel in this second of a three-game set.

Betcha didn’t know: Young Jayson Aquino (1-1, 9.00), who was called up to the bigs for the first time on July 4 last year, will make his second career MLB start for Baltimore. Slumping Chris Tillman is on the paternity list as he prepares to become a father for the first time, so the 24-year-old Dominican lefty will take the mound for the Orioles in Milwaukee for what will be his first big-league road start. He beat the Red Sox on April 22 at Camden Yards, allowing just two runs over six innings, but faces a National League team for just the second time, having debuted at Dodger Stadium a year and a day ago. He's had issues with his mechanics but enjoyed a strong June and has a losing record at Triple-A Norfolk mostly because of poor run support.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-220) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Angels (+155) at Twins

Biggest line move: Tigers (-150 to -180) vs. Giants

                  — Oakland Raiders Yes -$160, No +$140

                  ************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

                  13) Lets see the analytics guys try to quantify this, because you can’t:

In Tuesday’s Milwaukee Brewer game, 3B Travis Shaw threw a ball to first base that wound up going into foul territory, and the runner advanced. Scorer ruled: E5, which ended a 52-game errorless streak for Shaw.

After the game, Brewers’ 1B Eric Thames called the official scorer and told him the error should be his; it was a good throw and he missed it. The error was changed to E3 and Shaw’s errorless streak extended to 53.

Not everyone would do that, but a selfless guy on an overachieving team did it, and there is no way you can quantify that and factor it into his WAR. Too bad, because it matters.

                  12) Cincinnati Reds’ OF Scott Schebler is a pretty good big leaguer; he is a .259 hitter in 180 major league games. Coming out of high school in Iowa, he had zero baseball scholarship offers, but he did have a couple to play football. Things have turned out pretty well for him.

                  11) 70 hot dogs (and buns) in 10 minutes. Oy.

I almost get nauseous just thinking about what it must feel like to eat 70 hot dogs in ten minutes. How long before you eat again? Do you just find a restroom and puke your guts out?

                  10) Orlando Magic waived big guy Stephen Zimmerman, who will be 21 in September and could be heading into his junior year at UNLV, had he gotten/taken intelligent advice. He wasn’t even a first round pick— he was the 41st player taken in the 2016 draft.

Instead, Zimmerman scored 23 points in 108 minutes of garbage time spread out over 19 NBA games, a classic case of a kid turning pro before he is ready. Now he’ll have to climb back to the NBA the hard way— it can still be done, but it ain’t gonna be easy.

He scored 13.4 pts/game in 21 D-League games last year. Now he is either headed back there or over to Europe, when he could still be in college and improving his game and getting a college education, in case this NBA thing never works out for him.

Zimmerman scored 10.5 pts/game for a sub-par UNLV squad in 2015-16; their coach got fired during the season, thats how cruddy the team played. But Zimmerman and his family were convinced he was an NBA star-in-waiting, so he bolted to the draft despite having a game that needed more maturity to be NBA-ready. He shot 62% from the line, both at UNLV and in the D-League last year- -shooting is one part of his game he needs to sharpen up.

                  9) Pretty cool to see Stan Van Gundy watching games at the Orlando Summer League while sitting next to his dad Bill, a coaching lifer who was a small college coach for years.

Flash back to November 1980, I’m a student manager at Albany- we’re in a tip-off tournament at Brockport State near Rochester, NY. Host Brockport plays Upsala in the first round; Brockport’s coach has a neck brace on from a car accident- Bill Van Gundy. Upsala is the #1 preseason team in the country, according to Sports Illustrated.

We sneak by RIT in the first game, Upsala beats Brockport, then we beat Upsala in the title game, beating the #1 team in the country. Basketball without a shot clock; our team ran its offense until Upsala got sick of defending it. It wasn’t pretty, but it damn sure worked.

Who knew that the guy with neck brace would wind up with two famous sons?

                  8) They had 15,664 fans in Albuquerque Tuesday night for baseball/fireworks, but the game lasted only 2:03, so the fans had to wait a while for the fireworks- the sun hadn’t set yet when the ballgame ended.

                  7) I’ve never understood why people like fireworks; seriously. They have a free fireworks show in downtown Albany every July 4, and it draws 50,000 people. I know its free, but I just don’t see what the big deal is. Thats what makes the world interesting; different people like different stuff.

                  6) RIP Gene Conley 86, who played on a World Series champ with the Milwaukee Braves and three NBA championship teams with the Celtics. Not many humans pitched to Willie Mays and also guarded Wilt Chamberlain. RIP, sir.

                  5) NBA doings:
                  — You may have heard; Boston gave Gordon Hayward $128M for four years.
                  — Golden State signed Omar Casspi for one year, $2.1M
                  — Sacramento signed Zach Randolph for two years, $24M
                  — Sacramento signed George Hill for three years, $57M.
                  — Mike Scott gets one year, $1.17M from Washington
                  — Clippers acquired Danilo Gallinari and gave him three years, $65M.
                  — Nick Young somehow gets $5.2M for one year from the Warriors.
                  — Andre Roberson gets $30M for three years from Oklahoma City.

                  4) Celtics have to trade at least one of these three players: Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder and Avery Bradley, to clear cap room for Hayward. Crowder might be the most marketable of the three, because his contract is very team-friendly.

                  3) Handicapping baseball is difficult; Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey allowed 14 runs in 4.2 IP in his first two starts this year- with start #3 at Coors Field, it didn’t look good for Bailey breaking his cold spell, but he did. Colorado won 8-1; Bailey put only eight men on base on six innings.

                  Go figure.

                  2) Former Louisville guard Russ Smith scored 61 pts/game in his first five games in a Chinese pro league- he had 81 in one game. Smith also owns the G-League scoring record: 65 points.

He has played in 27 NBA games for the Pelicans/Grizzlies, scoring 2.0 pts/game.

                  1) Marlins 9, Cardinals 6— Giancarlo Stanton homered in innings 1-2, his 22nd multi-homer game. Stanton is incredibly streaky, but when he gets hot, he is great fun to watch.

                    • MLB notebook: Judge ties DiMaggio's rookie HR mark
                      July 5, 2017

Powerhouse Aaron Judge belted his majors-best 29th homer in Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, matching the New York Yankees' rookie franchise record set in 1936 by Joe DiMaggio.

Judge went deep for the second time in as many days on Wednesday when he deposited a pitch from Marco Estrada over the wall in right-center field for a two-run homer during the fourth inning. The blast, which came in Judge's 83rd game this season, trimmed Toronto's lead to 5-2.

Judge's 29 homers are the most by a rookie prior to the All-Star break since Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu had the same number in 2014. Mark McGwire had 33 with the Oakland Athletics in 1987.

The 25-year-old Judge is the American League's leading vote-getter for the upcoming All-Star Game in Miami. He will also participate in the Home Run Derby.

--Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona remains hospitalized at Cleveland Clinic for tests, missing a second straight game against the San Diego Padres at Progressive Field.

His status as American League manager in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in Miami is not certain.

Doctors are attempting to diagnose the cause of Francona's chronic lightheadedness. The 58-year-old manager has been wearing a heart monitor after dizzy spells on June 13 and again June 26 caused concern.

"We talked about a wide variety of issues from different trade conversations we're having and things going on with the team, so he's actively engaged and actively itching to get back," team president Chris Antonetti said after visiting Francona. "But as I've shared with him, the most important thing for all of us is his health, his long-term health, and we want to make sure we get him back healthy and ready to lead us the rest of the way."

--The Minnesota Twins placed left-hander Hector Santiago on the 10-day disabled list with upper thoracic back pain and discomfort, the team announced.

The move is retroactive to July 3.

Santiago, who spent time on the disabled list earlier this season with a left shoulder strain, is 4-8 with a 5.63 ERA over 70 1/3 innings in 15 games (14 starts).

Santiago, 29, was pulled after 3 1/3 innings and 58 pitches in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals. He was charged with four runs on four hits, a hit batter and a walk, and absorbed his seventh consecutive defeat.

                      • LEADING OFF: Sale's All-Star tuneup, final fan voting wraps
                        July 5, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                        ALL-STAR SALE

Red Sox ace Chris Sale makes his final appearance before the All-Star Game, putting him in line to potentially start for the American League next Tuesday in Miami. Sale (11-3, 2.61 ERA) enters a game against Tampa Bay with double-digit strikeouts in three of his past four outings, including seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts against Toronto last Saturday.

                        ELECTION DAY

Fan voting online for the final spot on each All-Star roster ends at 4 p.m. EDT, and the two winners will be announced a few hours later on MLB Network. As of Wednesday afternoon, Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was leading the American League balloting over shortstops Xander Bogaerts (Red Sox), Didi Gregorius (Yankees) and Elvis Andrus (Rangers), and Rays first baseman Logan Morrison. Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was at the front of the National League field, followed by Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon, Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds and Marlins first baseman Justin Bour.

                        WHERE THERE'S SMOKE...

Justin Verlander's once-secure future in Detroit has become increasingly uncertain. With the Tigers languishing below .500, the pressure may soon be on general manager Al Avila to trade some of his biggest stars, including the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner who debuted with Detroit in 2005. ''Obviously, where there's smoke, there's fire,'' Verlander said of the trade speculation, adding that ''it's just the way sports are now.''

                        STILL AILING

Indians manager Terry Francona will miss at least a few more games as doctors try to pinpoint his medical issues. Francona was still at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday getting tests to determine what has been causing light-headedness and an increased heart rate over the past month. The 58-year-old Francona was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. Team president Chris Antonetti said Francona could be sidelined for the remainder of Cleveland's homestand before next week's All-Star break. Francona is supposed to manage the American League All-Star team next Tuesday in Miami.

                        NL WEST SHOWDOWN

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks conclude a three-game series with a battle of left-handers: Los Angeles' Rich Hill (5-4, 4.00) against Arizona's Robbie Ray (8-4, 3.06). Hill dominated San Diego in his previous start, a promising sign after a first half of the season plagued by blisters and inconsistent performance. Ray was named to his first All-Star team Sunday, although he's 1-1 with a 5.09 ERA over his past three starts.

                        FOLTY FOLLOW-UP

Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz makes his first start since taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Oakland. The hard-throwing 25-year-old was pulled after Matt Olson's leadoff homer on his career-high 119th pitch, and he got an extra day of rest ahead of his scheduled start against Washington. Foltynewicz (6-5, 3.83) was 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA in six starts last month.
