    • Armadillo:Tuesday's six-pack

      — Indians 15, Rangers 9— Cleveland trailed this game 9-2 in the 4th inning.

      — Red Sox 4, Twins 1— Minnesota falls back out of first place in AL Central.

      — Arizona 6, Phillies 1— Diamondbacks are a surprising 49-28 this year.

      — Angels 4, Dodgers 0— Halos take the first game of the Freeway Series.

      — Giants 9, Rockies 2— Sliding Colorado has now lost six games in a row.

      — Florida 4, LSU 3— Gators take Game 1 of the best-of-3 College World Series.

      **********

Armadillo:Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

      13) Cody Bellinger (whose dad is from beautiful downtown Oneonta, NY- right down the road from Cooperstown) has a 34.4% HR/FB rate, meaning that 34.4% of his fly balls go over the fence, incredibly high.

Ray Flowers, who writes guruElite.com and is a fantasy sports expert, wrote that a 34.4% rate is unsustainable. He posted the last seven guys to lead MLB in HR/FB rate:

      2016 Ryan Braun 28.8%
      2015 Nelson Cruz 30.3%
      2014 Jose Abreu 26.9%
      2013 Chris Davis 29.6%
      2012 Adam Dunn 29.3%
      2011 Giancarlo Stanton 24.8%
      2010 Joey Votto 25.0%

Will be curious to follow this thru the summer and on to next season.

      12) Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal was at the plate Sunday with the bases loaded and LA trailing 4-3; Grandal struck out, but before he did, all three baserunners scored on a pair of wild pitches by Colorado reliever Adam Ottavino. Never saw that happen before.

      11) Baltimore Orioles are 37-38, after starting the season 22-10, but they’ve still won their last eight games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on. Starting pitching is what has been failing the Orioles.

      10) St Louis Cardinals called Randal Grichuk up from AAA over the weekend and immediately put him in the lineup, batting cleanup. Not sure I’ve ever heard of that before. Most teams try to break guys in slowly when they come back from the minors. Grichuk then homered in his first two games back with the Redbirds.

      9) Umpire Chad Whitson has umpired 12 games behind the plate this year- the home team won all 12 games, if you care about things like that.

      8) UConn basketball player Vance Jackson transfers to New Mexico and will have three years left to play after he sits a year, a good get for new Lobos’ coach Paul Weir.

      7) Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak and former Chiefs’ RB Christian Okoye used to own independent league baseball teams in the Golden State League, which was in business from 2004-10. Five GBL teams merged with the North American League in 2010.

      6) Whats up with the CFL schedule makers? Calgary/Ottawa play twice this season, in Weeks 1-2. What genius thought that was a good idea? Do they draw the schedule out of a hat?

      5) Royce Lewis was the #1 pick in the baseball draft, by Minnesota; he homered in his first at-bat in pro baseball, going 2-4 in the GCL Twins’ 5-2 win over the GCL Orioles. Lewis is an 18-year old shortstop from San Juan Capistrano, CA. Great athlete; they’re unsure if he’ll stay at SS.

      4) Colorado Rockies have an infield prospect named Brendan Rodgers who just got called up to AA Hartford- he is supposed to be very good. Rodgers has already been on a roster in our 16-team fantasy league for several months— thats how deep our league is- kid who got called up to AA this weekend is already in a fantasy league.

      3) Baseball transactions:
      — Colorado Rockies put OF Carlos Gonzalez/P Tyler Anderson on the 10-day DL
      — Rays acquired SS Adeiny Hechavarria from Miami for RHP Ethan Clark
      — New York put Aaron Hicks (oblique) on the DL, activated Jacoby Ellsbury from the DL
      — Milwaukee acquired C Stephen Vogt on waivers from Oakland.
      — Dodgers put OF Franklin Gutierrez on the DL, activated 2B Mike Freeman

      2) Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon won NBA Rookie of the Year and he wasn’t even a first round draft pick. Brogdon played in 75 games (imagine that?!?!) and scored 10.2 pts/game. He was the 36th pick in the draft last year— excellent choice by the Bucks.

      1) Ben Simmons was captured on video this weekend throwing a basketball off a wall, then catching it with one hand and dunking it, just the kind of stress his healed foot doesn’t need.

Simmons missed all of last year (his rookie season) with a broken foot, so doing dunking tricks isn’t exactly the smartest thing he should be doing— he lands the wrong way and his foot breaks again. At some point, he needs to take better care of himself.

I know I sound like the “Get off my lawn!!!” guy, but I’m thinking that behind closed doors, the 76ers’ management couldn’t have been very happy either, when they saw the video.

              • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                June 27, 2017

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (5-1 past six games, 15-3 past 18 overall)

The Diamondbacks won the final three games of a wraparound series against the Phillies, outscoring the visitors 17-4 during the span. Unfortunately for Arizona, the first-place Dodgers have been on fire and are 10-1 over their past 11 outings. As far as bettors are concerned, Arizona has been a friend at the betting window, especially when facing lesser teams. The Diamondbacks are an impressive 26-6 over their past 32 home games against teams with a losing record, and 40-17 in their past 57 overall against teams with a losing overall mark. Arizona turns to Taijuan Walker, and the Snakes are 7-2 over his past nine outings.

Coldest team: Philies (2-8 past 10 games, 3-16 past 19 overall)

The Phillies turn to Aaron Nola to try and stop the bleeding in the interleague road series in Seattle against the Mariners. Philadelphia hasn't found much success since the opening month of the season, going just 12-39 over their past 51 games overall. They're a dismal 1-8 over their past nine interleague games, 11-40 across the past 51 on the road and 2-5 over their past seven outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. The Phils are just 1-5 over Nola's past six interleague assignments, 3-8 in his past 11 outings on the road and 5-13 over his past 18 starts overall.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (8-5, 2.09 ERA)

Scherzer puts his major league-leading 2.09 ERA on the line against Jake Arrieta and the Cubs. While his overall record isn't terribly impressive, his NL-high 145 strikeouts over 107 2/3 innings is eye popping. He also has walked just 24 batters while holding the opposition to a .167 average with a 0.81 WHIP. The Nationals have been ripe for the picking at home, going just 3-7 over their past 10 in D.C.. However, they're 22-9 over Scherzer's past 31 starts overall while going 5-1 in his past six when he is working on five days of rest. And for what it's worth, Washington is a perfect 6-0 in their past six games on Tuesday.

Coldest pitcher: Kevin Gausman, Orioles (3-7, 6.47 ERA)

Gausman has issued 39 free passes over 80 2/3 innings across just 16 starts, and his 6.47 ERA isn't doing him many favors, either. The opposition is hitting a robust .332 against Gausman and he has been tagged for an awful 1.88 WHIP while showing no signs of turning things around. He has gone from ace-like to Ubaldo Jimenez-like in the course of the past year or so. Baltimore is 4-9 over Gausman's past 13 outings, 8-25 over his past 33 road starts and the O's are 3-12 in their past 15 road games vs. RHP. It looks like another bumpy night for the Orioles.

Biggest UNDER run: Padres (5-1 past six games)

The 'under' has connected in five of the past six for the Padres, and the under is 8-2-1 in their past 11 in the third game of a series. They're also 5-1 in Clayton Richard's past six starts on a Sunday, while going 3-0-1 over his past four against a team with a losing record. The over has been hitting for Detroit lately, going 3-1-1 in their past five road games. However, the under is 5-2-1 in Detroit's past eight interleague road outings and 3-1-1 in Jordan Zimmermann's past five road starts. The over hit in Saturday's game, but the under easily cashed in Friday's interleague series opener.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (18-7-1 past 26 overall, 8-2 past 10 road games)

The 'over' has been hitting frequently for Baltimore lately, going 8-2 over the past 10 road games while posting an 18-7-1 mark over the past 26 games overall. The over is 7-0 in Baltimore's past seven road games vs. RHP while also going 7-0 in theirp ast seven against divisional foes. The over is also 4-1 in Toronto's past five games, and 6-2 in their past eight following a scheduled day off. However, the under is 14-3 in the past 17 meetings between these divisional rivals and 7-2 in the past nine at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Cubs

The Cubs turn to Jake Arrieta to keep the ball rolling in D.C. The defending champs held off the Nationals in the ninth inning in the series opener, although things certainly got hairy. Chicago led 5-0, but the bullpen was beaten up for four runs in the bottom of the frame. 'Under' bettors (10), who hadn't a care in the world after just two total runs through eight innings, needed a stiff drink after a total of seven runs in the final stanza and two runners on base with two outs. Closer Wade Davis saved the day with a strikeout of Ryan Zimmerman, but it was a close shave for total bettors and Cubs side bettors alike.

Betcha didn’t know: Two Cubs hitters bring career-high hitting streaks into Tuesday's game in Washington. Javier Baez has collected 13 hits over his past 31 at-bats over his eight-game hitting streak while Ian Happ is an impressive 12-for-28 while hitting safely across the past seven outings. They'll certainly have to earn their hits on Tuesday, as Scherzer is 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in five career outings against the Cubbies, and he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning last time out in Miami.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-220) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+200) at Red Sox

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-190 to -225) vs. Angels

                • LEADING OFF: Nationals take a look at K-Rod, Yankees ailing
                  June 27, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                  CAN HE HELP?

The NL East-leading Washington Nationals were angling to add Francisco Rodriguez to their biggest trouble spot - the bullpen. The Nats have seen a lot of late leads get away this season and hope the 35-year-old reliever can boost them. K-Rod is fourth on the career saves list with 437, but was released by Detroit last week after posting a 7.82 ERA in 25 1/3 innings.

                  AILING

The Yankees will see how second baseman Starlin Castro and designated hitter Matt Holliday feel after a tough start to the week. Castro left Monday night's game in Chicago against the White Sox after straining his right hamstring. He had just returned to the lineup after getting a shot in his wrist. Holliday didn't start for the second straight game because he's feeling fatigued, and doctors are checking him.

                  FRANCONA FEELING ILL

The Indians are hoping for good news on manager Terry Francona, who left a game Monday night after experiencing similar symptoms as when he was hospitalized during a game June 14. Cleveland said Francona was evaluated by the team's medical staff and checked out fine, but wouldn't confirm if the skipper had gone to the hospital. The 57-year-old Francona missed a game last season in August after experiencing chest pains.

                  PRIZE FIGHT

The past two NL Cy Young Award winners square off when Nationals ace Max Scherzer takes on Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta. Scherzer (8-5, 2.09) earned the prize last year and is a leading contender again this season. He most recently pitched two-hit ball over eight innings against Miami, but lost a 2-1 game on a pair of unearned runs. Arrieta (7-5, 4.36) took the Cy Young in 2015 and finished ninth in last season's voting, but he's struggled this year to keep the ball in the park. His 13 homers allowed are already more than he gave up in 2015 (10) and approaching his total from last season (16).

                  BACK

Twins lefty Hector Santiago (4-6, 5.26 ERA) will come off the disabled list to start vs. Boston at Fenway Park. He's been out since June 7 with a strained left shoulder.

                  EARLY RETURNS

Braves rookie Sean Newcomb seeks his first major league victory in a game at San Diego. Newcomb, a potentially key piece in Atlanta's ongoing rebuild, is 0-2 despite a 1.96 ERA through three starts, and he's gone at least six innings in each of them. Newcomb was the top prospect Atlanta received from the Angels while trading shortstop Andrelton Simmons in 2015.

                    • MLB notebook: Indians manager Francona to miss game
                      June 27, 2017

After spending Monday night at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona was home resting Tuesday and did not manage the team in its game against the Texas Rangers.

Francona became ill during Monday night's game. He was taken to the Cleveland Clinic where he underwent a series of tests.

"The doctors ruled out any major health issues, which was a big relief to all of us," said Indians president Chris Antonetti.

It was the second such episode for Francona in less than two weeks. During a home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 13, Francona had to leave the dugout and was taken to Cleveland Clinic for tests after experiencing spells of dizziness and light-headedness. Tests at that time also revealed no major health issue, and his discomfort was attributed to dehydration.

Antonetti said Francona will return to the dugout for Wednesday's game with Texas. Francona will continue to be monitored by doctors over the next several weeks to determine the nature of his recent symptoms. Bench coach Brad Mills managed the team in Francona's absence.

--Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount due to his actions in Saturday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels, Major League Baseball announced.

Farrell was ejected for arguing a balk call in the game against the Angels. Farrell served the suspension Tuesday night when the Red Sox host the Minnesota Twins.

The incident occurred in the seventh inning on Saturday when Boston reliever Fernando Abad was called for a balk by third base umpire Bill Miller, allowing Cameron Maybin to score from third and increase Los Angeles' lead to 5-1. However, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia came rushing in and pointed at home plate umpire Ryan Blakney, who appeared to call timeout just before the balk was called.

After the umpiring crew met and decided the balk was the proper call, Farrell became enraged and had a face-to-face argument with Miller. Eventually, Farrell made contact with Miller and was ejected.

--The Washington Nationals and veteran right-hander Francisco Rodriguez have agreed to a minor league deal, according to published reports.

Rodriguez, who ranks fourth in baseball history with 437 career saves, was released by the Detroit Tigers on Friday. He had a horrid 7.82 ERA and had lost his job as the club's closer.

Rodriguez, 35, will report to the Nationals' minor league facility in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The six-time All Star was appealing to Washington due to its deep bullpen troubles this season. Rodriguez earned the nickname "K-Rod" as a youngster with the Angels due to his high number of strikeouts per innings pitched. He saved 40 or more games in four consecutive seasons for the club and set the major league record with 62 in 2008.

--The New York Yankees placed second baseman Starlin Castro on the 10-day disabled list.

Castro suffered a strained right hamstring while running out a ground ball on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at the Chicago White Sox.

The 27-year-old Castro is batting .313 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs in 73 games in his second season with New York.

To fill Castro's roster spot, the Yankees promoted infielder Tyler Wade from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Wade has played three infield positions at Triple-A and also played four games in the outfield.

--The Toronto Blue Jays designated right-handed reliever Jason Grilli for assignment and called up right-handed reliever Chris Smith from Triple-A Buffalo.

Grilli, 40, was 2-4 with a 6.97 ERA in 26 games with the Blue Jays this season. He allowed nine home runs in only 20 2/3 innings. Grilli recorded a career-high 33 saves with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013 and added 24 saves with the Atlanta Braves in 2015.

Smith, 28, was 1-2 with a 3.93 ERA in 14 games with Triple-A Buffalo. The Blue Jays also activated outfielder Ezequiel Carrera (fractured right foot) from the 10-day disabled list and returned outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. to Triple-A Buffalo.

--Right-hander Antonio Bastardo was recalled by the Pittsburgh Pirates from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis and reinstated from the 10-day disabled list, the team announced.

In a corresponding move, the Pirates optioned catcher Jacob Stallings to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Bastardo, 31, has not pitched in the majors since April 24 as he dealt with a left quad strain. He is 0-1 with a 16.20 ERA in six appearances this season. Stallings, 27, hit .286 (2-for-7) with a double and a strikeout in two games this season with the Pirates.

                      • Wednesday’s six-pack

                        — Rangers 2, Indians 1- Texas got six strong innings from Tyson Ross.

                        — A’s 6, Astros 4— Healy hit a grand slam; Oakland is 8-4 in its last 12 games.

                        — Nationals 6, Cubs 1– Chicago is only 39-38; Jake Arrieta is 7-6, 4.67. No bueno.

                        — Marlins 6, Mets 3- -Mets lost another pitcher (Gsellman) to injury (hamstring).

                        — Rays 4, Pirates 2 (10)— McCutchen tied game in 9th inning with clutch double.

                        — White Sox 4, New York 3— Jose Quintana has a 1.78 ERA in June; if Pale Hose want to trade him, the price sure is going up.

                        *************************

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                        13) The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the question of whether the federal government can prevent states from legalizing sports betting. Arguments are expected to be heard this fall, with a decision expected next year.

New Jersey is at the forefront of all this, but if they win, a bunch of other states will hop on board too- they won’t want their citizens taking their betting action out of state.

                        12) You think about NFL games; when the point spread is 3 or less points, those are the 50-50 games a team needs to win to be playoff contenders.

Since 2012, the Chicago Bears are 9-25-3 against the spread in games where the spread was 3 or less points. Thats why coaches get fired and quarterbacks get released.

                        11) Indians manager Terry Francona hasn’t been feeling well; he left the dugout early in Monday’s game and didn’t manage the Tribe last night. Doctors have ruled out any major health issues, which is good news. We wish him well.

                        10) Atlanta Falcons were an offensive juggernaut last year, winning the NFC; over was 16-2-1 in their games, and OC Kyle Shanahan is now the head coach of the 49ers.

In 2015, those same Falcons were only 8-8; their last 12 games stayed under the total. No one was looking to hire Shanahan as a head coach. Things can change a lot in one year.

                        9) Charlie Sheen is selling Babe Ruth’s 1927 World Series ring; he is expected to collect over $600,000 on the deal.

                        8) If you bet “under 10” in the Cubs-Nationals game Monday night, you probably came close to a meltdown. Cubs led 2-0 after eight innings; even after they grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the 9th, you looked like a winner, but Washington rallied to within 5-4 and had two men on with Zimmerman up and two out. If Nationals tie the game, the over hits, but he made an out and under bettors took a huge sigh of relief.

                        7) Dodgers had homered in 17 straight games before Ricky Nolasco shut them down Monday nite. Nolasco was 0-6 in his last seven starts coming into that game.

                        6) Lakers hired Arizona alum Miles Simon as an assistant coach, meaning ESPN is minus one college basketball analyst. Lakers coach Luke Walton is also an Arizona alum, but he was in Tucson after Miles had moved on to pro ball.

                        5) On the Indians’ game last night, they showed a Cincinnati Reds player taking out A’s 2B Dick Green while breaking up a double play during the 1972 World Series.

It was basically a cross-body block; the Indians’ play-by-play guy said it would be a penalty in the NFL today, blocking below the waist. Our games have changed a lot over the years.

                        4) Things I’ve learned watching TV: Heineken is served in 192 countries.

                        3) The Manning Passing Academy has grown to 1,200 campers, with 48 college QB’s as counselors at the camp, which was held this year at Nicholls State in Thibodeauz, LA. Most of the best college QB’s heading into this season were counselors at this camp.

Friend of mine’s son went to the Passing Academy 14-15 years ago; he enjoyed the experience. If I remember right, former LSU/Patriots’ QB Tom Hodson was his counselor that week.

                        2) All-Star balloting: Marlins’ LF Marcell Ozuna has 1,270,464 votes, is #3 in the NL voting; his more famous teammate, Giancarlo Stanton, has 1,069,313- that surprised me.

                        1) A’s 3B prospect Matt Chapman came up to the majors couple weekends ago, the A’s won all four games he played in, then he woke up that Monday morning with a swollen knee- he had an infection. Young man was in the hospital for several days, but is out now and is expected to come off the DL sometime next week. Chapman is a really good fielder.
