        • Thursday's Diamond Notes
          June 29, 2017

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (7-3 last 10) vs. Cardinals

No one playing on Thursday owns a winning streak longer than two games as we’ll roll out the red carpet for Arizona in this category. In spite of a 4-3 setback to St. Louis on Wednesday, the D-backs have won 16 of their last 20 games, while not dropping consecutive contests at Chase Field since mid-May against the Pirates. Arizona tries to improve on a 12-3 mark in its past 15 home games, as the D-backs prepare for a crucial series with the struggling Rockies this weekend in Phoenix.

Back to today’s action, where left-hander Patrick Corbin attempts to grab the series victory for the Snakes. Corbin is fresh off a quality outing against the Phillies, but fell as a -175 favorite in a 6-1 defeat as Philadelphia plated four runs in the final inning. This season, Arizona has won seven of Corbin’s nine starts at Chase Field, but he did allow seven earned runs in an 11-4 home loss to the Cardinals last season.

Coldest team: White Sox (2-8 last 10) vs. Yankees

Things are quickly turning sour on the South Side as the Sox fell to 1-5 on their current homestand following a 12-3 defeat to the Yankees on Wednesday. Chicago is listed in the home underdog role for the 17th straight time as the Sox own a 7-9 record in this span.

James Shields heads to the mound in the series finale for Chicago, coming off his worst start of the season after being touched up for three home runs and six earned runs in three innings of a 10-2 rout at the hands of Oakland last Saturday. Shields beat the Yankees last July 4 as a home underdog, 8-2, while yielding two earned runs and five hits in six innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Urena, Marlins (6-2, 3.33 ERA)

The Mets blanked the Marlins last night, 8-0, but Miami sends out the right-hander Urena in the rubber match. Miami has won six of Urena’s last seven starts, including a 2-0 home underdog victory over the defending champion Cubs last Friday. Urena is unbeaten in his past four starts at Marlins Park, while allowing a total of three earned runs in his past three outings combined. When Urena faced the Mets back in May at Citi Field, the native of the Dominican Republic yielded one hit in six scoreless innings of a 7-0 shutout.

Coldest pitcher: Ubaldo Jimenez, Orioles (2-3, 7.26 ERA)

Remember 2010? Jimenez, then a member of the Rockies, compiled a 15-1 record in the first half of the season. Since that magical season, Jimenez has reached the 10-win mark only three times, while posting a 28-34 record the last four seasons with the Orioles. Jimenez’s most recent start was one to forget by allowing nine earned runs in less than three innings of work in a 15-5 drubbing at Tampa Bay, his third straight road loss. Jimenez takes the mound in the finale against Toronto as he shut down the Blue Jays last September by tossing 6.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball in a 4-0 victory.

Biggest OVER run: Cardinals (11-4 last 15)

St. Louis finishes off its brief three-game road trip in Arizona this afternoon before heading back to Busch Stadium for the next 10 games. The Cardinals had their four-game OVER streak snapped in Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over the D-backs, one night after blowing a late 5-2 lead in a 6-5 defeat in extra innings. The Redbirds have seen the OVER hit in seven of the past 11 games away from home, but the UNDER is 4-1 in their previous five road contests against left-handed starting pitchers.

Biggest UNDER run: Braves (5-2-1 last eight)

Following a 3-0 shutout of San Diego on Tuesday, Atlanta’s pitching took a step back on Wednesday in a 7-4 defeat to the Padres. Bartolo Colon was torched once again as the burly veteran allowed six earned runs in four innings of work, while his ERA ballooned to 8.14. Left-hander Jaime Garcia takes the mound in today’s finale at Petco Park, coming off two rough efforts at home in one-run wins over the Marlins and Giants. Garcia yielded six earned runs in each of those two starts, but has been much better on the road recently by not giving up an earned run in his past two outings away from SunTrust Park.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Angels

The Halos have put together a pretty solid turnaround in spite of playing without two-time MVP Mike Trout. Since the center fielder broke his thumb at Miami in late May, the Angels have not lost more than two games in a row, while improving to 10-1 off a defeat after edging the Dodgers on Wednesday, 3-2. The Angels go for the series victory against the rival Dodgers this evening, but the task won’t be easy.

Clayton Kershaw heads to the hill in Anaheim as a -200 road favorite as the Dodgers’ ace is unbeaten in his previous 10 starts. Since losing at Colorado in early April, Los Angeles owns a perfect 6-0 record in Kershaw’s last six outings away from Chavez Ravine, while the Dodgers are 4-0 in Kershaw’s four starts against the Angels since 2014.

J.C. Ramirez is looking to beat a Cy Young winner for the second straight time after the Angels’ right-hander defeated David Price and the Red Sox last Saturday. The Angels have soared in Ramirez’s last six starts as an underdog by posting a 5-1 record, including home ‘dog wins over the Astros and Yankees. In the each of the last six home games against left-handed starting pitchers, the Angels have failed to score more than three runs.

Betcha didn’t know: The Brewers step up late as Milwaukee has put together a solid 7-2 record in its previous nine series finales. Milwaukee looks to avoid the sweep tonight against Cincinnati as the Brew Crew has not been swept away from Miller Park this season.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-270) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Mets (+120) at Marlins

Biggest line move: Cardinals (+125 to +110) at Diamondbacks

WASHINGTON (AP) Nationals shortstop and leadoff hitter Trea Turner broke his right wrist when hit by a 96 mph fastball from the Chicago Cubs' Pedro Strop in the seventh inning of Washington's 5-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

Turner stole two bases, giving him seven in the four-game series and 35 this season. He is batting .279 with seven homers and 32 RBIs after finishing second in voting for 2016 NL Rookie of the Year.

              Jon Jay hit a go-ahead two-run double during a three-run ninth-inning rally against Blake Treinen (0-2)

Wade Davis struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 16th save after Felix Pena (1-0) worked the eighth.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Clayton Kershaw struck out 12 to become the majors' first 12-game winner, Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer and Los Angeles salvaged a split of the Freeway Series.

Kershaw (12-2) yielded three hits and one unearned run over seven dominant innings, posting his fifth double-digit strikeout total of the season. He got ample support from the homer-happy NL leaders, who have won 18 of 21.

After Yasiel Puig and Chase Utley homered in the fifth inning, Pederson's sixth-inning shot off J.C. Ramirez (7-6) gave the Dodgers 50 homers in June, breaking the 135-year-old franchise's record for homers in a calendar month, set in 1953.

Andrew Cashner (3-7) was struck on the right elbow by a broken bat in the sixth inning and was removed a batter later. The Rangers said he sustained a bruise and X-rays were negative.

              BREWERS 11, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ryan Braun started Milwaukee's six-homer barrage, hitting the first of three off Homer Bailey, and the Brewers beat Cincinnati, salvaging the final game of their series.

The NL Central leaders hit six homers for the first time since 2007, when they also did it in Cincinnati. Jonathan Villar connected twice as Milwaukee matched its season high for runs. Jesus Aguilar had a three-run homer among his three hits.

Jimmy Nelson (6-4) gave up three hits in seven innings, including Joey Votto's 22nd and 23rd homers, and matched his season high with 11 strikeouts.

                  • MLB notebook: Braves designate Colon for assignment
                    June 29, 2017

The Atlanta Braves designated right-hander Bartolo Colon for assignment, the team announced Thursday.

The Braves called up left-hander Rex Brothers from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill the roster spot of Colon, who owns a 2-8 mark with a bloated 8.14 ERA this season.

The decline has been swift for the 44-year-old Colon after he won 62 games over the previous four seasons. The four-time All-Star was a solid 15-8 with a 3.43 ERA for the New York Mets in 2016.

Colon rejoined the Braves on Wednesday after being on the disabled list for a strained oblique and stiff back. The return wasn't a triumphant one, as Colon allowed six runs on eight hits with three walks in four innings of a 7-4 setback to the San Diego Padres.

--The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Chase Anderson on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Anderson sustained the injury while swinging in his first at-bat of Milwaukee's 4-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

Anderson has a 6-2 record with a 2.89 ERA this season. He has 85 strikeouts and just 27 walks in his 16 starts.

Right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez was called up from Double-A Biloxi to fill Anderson's roster spot.

--Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant missed Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals with an ankle injury, but he does not expect to go on the disabled list.

Last year's National League MVP was injured when he stepped on third base awkwardly after catching a foul popup.

His injury was diagnosed as a mild sprain and he probably will be back in the starting lineup sometime during the weekend.

--The Chicago White Sox placed struggling right-hander Jake Petricka on the 10-day disabled list.

Petricka is dealing with a strain in his pitching elbow. He had a poor outing on Wednesday when he allowed five runs in one inning against the New York Yankees. Petricka possesses a 9.28 ERA in nine appearances for the White Sox.

Right-hander Juan Minaya was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move.

--Asdrubal Cabrera has changed his tune in regard to his request to be traded from the New York Mets.

Cabrera told the New York Post that he wishes to remain in Queens. The stance comes less than a week after the 31-year-old Venezuelan requested a trade because the Mets moved him from shortstop to second base.

Cabrera was shuffled to second base after the team learned that Neil Walker was slated to miss several weeks with a hamstring tear.

--Texas Rangers right-hander Andrew Cashner was activated from the 10-day disabled list and started Thursday that afternoon's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Right-hander Preston Claiborne was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock to open a roster spot for Cashner, who had been sidelined with a left oblique strain.

                    • LEADING OFF: Nats missing Turner, Grichuk back on track
                      June 30, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

                      CHANGE AT THE TOP

The Nationals are going to need a new leadoff man after speedy shortstop Trea Turner broke his right wrist in a loss to the Cubs on Thursday. Turner was hit by a fastball from Pedro Strop, and Washington hasn't set a timetable for how long he'll be out. Turner stole seven bases in four games against the Cubs to take the major league lead from Cincinnati's Billy Hamilton with 35 swipes. The second-year player is hitting .279 atop Washington's lineup, which leads the NL in runs.

                      ROLLING RANDAL

Three weeks in the minor leagues may have done the trick for Randal Grichuk. The Cardinals outfielder hit a go-ahead, three-run homer and drove in five runs Thursday in a win over Arizona. In his fourth big league season, Grichuk was sent down May 29 and recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday after 15 games in the minors. He homered in each of his first two games back, using a shorter swing, but was 0 for 9 entering Thursday. ''I definitely took it as a wake-up call,'' he explained. ''I said, let's go and make sure it doesn't happen again.''

                      GETTING GOING

Jacob deGrom (7-3, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to start when the Mets open a three-game homestand against the Phillies and Ben Lively (1-2, 3.90). In his past three starts, deGrom is 3-0 with an ERA of 0.72. New York has won five of six since getting swept over four games against the Dodgers.

                      CUBS TRY TO REGROUP

The defending World Series champions open a weekend series in Cincinnati looking to recover from a rough stay in Washington. They parted ways with Miguel Montero after the catcher blamed Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases by the Nationals on Tuesday. A day later, Kris Bryant sprained his right ankle, and he is expected to be sidelined a few days. One thing in Chicago's favor: The Cubs have won 23 of their last 28 against Cincinnati.

                      NO PANIC

Pirates ace Gerrit Cole is starting to figure things out. Cole is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts heading into a game against San Francisco, an emphatic bounce back from a bumpy four-start stretch in which he posted a 10.17 ERA. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle praised Cole for not panicking during his slump. ''Overall his command has picked up,'' Hurdle said. ''I think that's what he was able to work his way through during the hard period.''

Hottest team: Mets (5-1 last six) vs. Phillies

New York sits seven games below .500 in spite of its recent hot stretch, as the Mets return home following a successful end to their road trip. After getting swept in a four-game series by the Dodgers, the Mets took all three contests against the Giants, while capturing two of three from the Marlins. The offense racked up only five runs in the final three losses at Los Angeles, but New York scored at least five runs in each of their past five victories.

Jacob deGrom has rebounded from a pair of poor outings against the Brewers and Rangers (15 earned runs in eight innings) to give up just three runs in the past three starts – all victories. In seven of New York’s nine wins when deGrom starts, the Mets have won by two runs or more, which is key since they are -240 on the money-line and -120 on the run-line.

Coldest team: Rockies (0-8 last eight) at Diamondbacks

On June 20, Colorado rallied past Arizona, 4-3 to win its sixth consecutive game and improve to 47-26. The Rockies haven’t won since then as they dropped the final two games of their series to the D-backs, while getting swept in road series to the Dodgers and Giants. The Colorado offense has dried up during this losing streak by scoring three runs or fewer six times, while the pitching has allowed nine runs or more four times.

The Rockies head to the desert to face the D-backs once again in an NL West showdown this weekend. Colorado captured two of three matchups at Chase Field in late April as right-hander Jon Gray heads to the mound in the opener. Gray started on Opening Day for Colorado in a 7-5 win at Milwaukee, but has been out of action since mid-April with a foot injury.

Hottest pitcher: Robbie Ray, Diamondbacks (8-3, 2.87 ERA)

Ray has been one of the top pitchers in the National League this season, as he is one victory away from a career-high for wins in a season. Arizona is 7-0 in Ray’s past seven outings, including three double-digit strikeout efforts from the southpaw. Ray has received tremendous run support in his last three outings at Chase Field (30 runs), but picked up only one run of support the last time he faced the Rockies on April 28, dropping a 3-1 decision as a -165 favorite.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Tillman, Orioles (1-5, 8.39 ERA)

Maybe the reverse jinx is on in this category after Tillman’s teammate, Ubaldo Jimenez was featured. Jimenez scattered two hits in eight innings of work as the Orioles blanked the Blue Jays, 2-0 as +165 road underdogs. Tillman tries to capitalize off that performance as the right-hander is actually unbeaten in his last two starts. Baltimore pulled out a pair of victories as underdogs against Cleveland and Tampa Bay, but Tillman gave up 16 hits and 10 runs in just 8.1 innings of work. Baltimore hosts Tampa Bay on Friday as the Orioles own a 1-3 record in Tillman’s past four starts at Camden Yards.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (6-2 last eight on road)

Atlanta’s offense disappeared against Dinelson Lamet in a 6-0 shutout at San Diego on Thursday. Although the Braves have played only two of their last seven series on the road, we’ll focus on their away total numbers as they travel to Oakland tonight. Atlanta has given up at least six runs in five of its past seven games away from SunTrust Park, while right-hander Mike Foltynewicz has yielded at least five earned runs in two of his previous three road assignments.

Biggest UNDER run: Angels (5-1 last six)

Thanks to a late run against the Dodgers’ bullpen, the Angels barely cashed the OVER in a 6-2 loss and saw its five-game UNDER streak come to a close. The Angels’ offense hasn’t busted out recently by scoring four runs or fewer in five straight games, while getting shut down by Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw on Thursday. The Halos welcome in the Mariners this weekend as Parker Bridwell shoots for his third win of the season. Bridwell is coming off a pair of wins as a huge underdog against the Yankees and Red Sox, while allowing a total of four earned runs in those outings.

Matchup to watch: Yankees vs. Astros

Houston is running away with the American League West as the Astros own a commanding 13 ½-game edge over second-place Los Angeles. The Astros are coming off a 8-2 stretch against the Athletics and Mariners, but Houston has slumped to a 1-5 record in the past six series openers, which includes a loss on Tuesday to Oakland.

Lance McCullers, Jr. heads to the mound for Houston searching for his eighth win of the season. McCullers is unbeaten in his last seven starts, while making his first start following a two-week layoff in a 5-2 victory at Seattle last Saturday. The Astros have won all six of McCullers’ outings at Minute Maid Park this season, while going 12-4 in his past 16 home starts since the beginning of 2016.

The Yankees played deep into the night on Thursday following a three-hour rain delay in Chicago as New York lost, 4-3 to split their four-game set on the South Side. New York has slipped to 2-8 in its past 10 games away from the Bronx, while the Yankees haven’t won consecutive road contests since mid-May at Kansas City. Joe Girardi’s team is looking to avenge a 1-3 home series to Houston from early May as Michael Pineda takes the hill. Pineda is winless in his last three starts, while owning a 6.25 ERA on the highway.

Betcha didn’t know: The Cubs continue to be inconsistent on the road this season as the defending champions haven’t won back-to-back games away from Wrigley Field since late April in Cincinnati. Guess where Chicago is playing tonight? The Cubs try to capitalize off Thursday’s comeback win at Washington with a visit against the Reds, who own a 1-5 record against Chicago this season.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-240) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+135) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-190 to -210) at Padres
