        April 26, 2017

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden had 34 points and his supporting cast helped Houston overcome a 47-point game by Russell Westbrook to get a 105-99 victory over Oklahoma City on Tuesday night to advance to the Western Conference semifinals.

The Thunder head home a year after advancing to the Western Conference finals after Houston took this series 4-1.

The Rockets used a 5-1 run, with all their points coming on free throws, to pull away from the Thunder and make it 98-91. Victor Oladipo threw a pass about 5 feet above Westbrook's head and out of bounds on the next possession and Harden made a layup on the other end with about 3 minutes left.

The Rockets began eating up the clock after that and Oklahoma City missed shot after shot that could have closed the gap.

Houston couldn't add to its lead though and the Thunder cut it to 4 points twice in the final seconds, with the second one coming on a basket by Alex Abrines. But Harden made two free throws both times they got close to secure the win.

        ---

        SPURS 116, GRIZZLIES 103

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard had 28 points and San Antonio rebounded from two discouraging road losses to beat Memphis and take a 3-2 lead in their first-round series.

San Antonio shot 14 for 28 on 3-point attempts, two off its postseason record, including 5-for-7 shooting by Patty Mills.

Mills finished with 20 points and Tony Parker added 16.

Mike Conley had 26 points and Marc Gasol added 17 for the Grizzlies, who have lost nine straight postseason games in San Antonio.

With each team winning on its homecourt, Game 6 is Thursday night in Memphis.

        ---

        JAZZ 96,CLIPPERS 92

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gordon Hayward scored 27 points, Utah controlled the paint, and the Jazz beat the Clippers 96-92 to take a 3-2 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Hayward returned after missing most of Utah's win in Game 4 because of food poisoning that caused him to lose weight and energy.

Chris Paul's 3-pointer drew the Clippers within two with 5 seconds left. After George Hill hit two free throws, Paul struggled getting the ball under control near the sideline and couldn't do anything as time expired.

The Jazz made five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including three by Rodney Hood, who finished with 16 points.

Paul led the Clippers with 28 points and J.J. Redick added 26 with injured star Blake Griffin watching from the bench, his right foot encased in a black walking boot.

The Jazz can clinch the series with a victory in Game 6 on Friday night in Salt Lake City.

        • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

          Marquette 31-41, 0-1
          St John’s 28-44, 0-2
          DePaul 14-58, 0-0

          **********

          Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

          13) “There are no coincidences.” Friend of mine used to say that a lot.

So when Saints @ Vikings shows up as a Week 1 Monday Night Football game, and then five days later, former Viking Adrian Peterson signs a two-year, $7M contract with the Saints, you have to think the league knew about it in advance and had them delay the announcement until after the schedule was released.

          12) Tuesday was a rainy night in the northeast; games in Boston, NYC, Philly were all rained out, which screws up fantasy league owners who had two-start (Tues/Sun) pitchers this week, but now will only make one start.

          11) Detroit 19, Seattle 9— I wish it rained in Detroit, seeing as how Felix Hernandez is on my fantasy team; he got shelled in two lousy innings of work. Mariners are now 2-10 on the road. Detroit had 19 hits, just in the first five innings.

          10) St Bonaventure is 35-19 in conference play the last three basketball seasons; look at a map and find Olean, NY- it is in the middle of freakin’ nowhere, on the Southern Tier of New York. There aren’t any big-time basketball high schools anywhere near Olean.

How has no big money college not hired Bonnies’ coach Mark Schmidt to run their program? This guy is a very good coach who should be working on a bigger stage.

          9) Dodgers 2, Giants 1: Dodgers are 5-17 in their last 22 games in San Francisco, losing last six of last seven games there.

Dodgers called up top outfield prospect Cody Bellinger, who is expected to play almost every day while Joc Pederson (groin strain) is on the DL.

          8) PGA Tour event in New Orleans this week is a team event; two-man teams, first time there has been one on the PGA Tour since 1981.

          7) Los Angeles Angels traded for Atlanta minor league pitcher David Hernandez, who was immediately added to the Halos’ big league roster. Hernandez was at a Faith Hill/Tim McGraw concert when he was notified of the trade.

          6) Astros star Jose Altuve left Tuesday’s game in Cleveland in the 8th inning with what looked like a sore jaw after he collided with RF Teoscar Hernandez, who looked like he had a much more severe injury to his left leg.

          5) Kansas has three hoop transfers who will be sitting out next year, then will be eligible to play in 2018-19; the Lawson brothers from Memphis and PG Charlie Moore from Cal. That reduces their eligible scholarship players for next year to 10 at the most- their bench could be thin.

          4) When TNT replays NBA playoff games in the middle of the night, they replay the whole game, even the halftime shows. ESPN cuts a decent amount of their NBA game replays: “Due to time constraints we move ahead to further action”. Not sure why they do that.

          3) ESPN was supposed to show Tigers-Indians this coming Monday night, but after the Red Sox threw at Manny Machado Sunday, they dropped that game and added Orioles-Red Sox to their Monday night programming.

          2) 182 underclassmen (137 college, 45 foreign) have declared for the NBA Draft, in which only 60 players are drafted. Lot of the kids do not have agents and can go back to school, but there will also be several players heading to the D-League or Europe, having gotten poor advice.

You can make good money playing in Europe, but it ain’t the NBA.

1— I’ve whined a decent amount this year about NBA players needing “maintenance days” to rest up, either mentally/physically, from the grind of a long season.

Then there is the NHL; it came out after they lost to Edmonton in the playoffs that San Jose Sharks’ Joe Thornton played four games, with a torn ACL and MCL.

Let me repeat that: he played four hockey games WITH AN ALMOST TOTALLY SHREDDED KNEE!!! No maintenance days in pro hockey. Just really tough guys.

                    April 26, 2017

Hottest team: Nationals (8-1 past nine)

The Nationals bounced back from Monday's loss in style, outlasting the Rockies 15-12 on Tuesday. Washington's Trea Turner ended up hitting for the cycle while driving in seven runs and Daniel Murphy tied a career-best with five RBI in a game which looked more like a slow-pitch beer-league softball game rather than a Major League Baseball performance. The Nats offense continues to hum long, posting three or more runs in each of the past nine games, and 18 of their 21 outings overall.

Coldest team Mets (0-4 past four, 1-8 past nine)

The Mets stunk it up in a homestand at Citi Field, posting just one victory in six games, including a three-game sweep at the hands of the red-hot Nationals. The Mets have had a power outage during the past nine games, averaging just 2.89 runs per game during the span. Fans of the blue and orange were likely cheering when Mother Nature decided to intervene, keeping New York from another potential loss. Showers will be pulling out of Flushing in the AM on Wednesday, so Mother Nature won't be able to help. The good news for the Mets is the fact the Bravos are just as poor lately, going 1-8 in their past nine road games, 0-6 in their past six divisional games and 4-12 in Julio Teheran's past 16 appearances against divisional foes.

Hottest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (3-1, 1.37 ERA)

Bundy was discussed as one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball for years. Now that he has arrived in Charm City he is living up to expectations in a big way. Bundy has posted 20 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings in four starts with an impressive 1.37 ERA while holding to opposition to a .239 batting average. He also has a sparkling 0.99 WHIP so far. While his overall body of work is impressive, the Oklahoman is even more impressive at home. He is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA with 11 strikeouts over 14 innings in two outings this season in Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Quintana, White Sox (0-4, 6.17 ERA)

Quintana has lost each of his four outings this season, allowing five home runs, 12 walks and 24 hits over 23 1/3 innings for a dismal 1.54 WHIP. Opposing batters are hitting .280 against him, although he has been able to rack up an impressive 20 strikeouts. He has his best chance at a victory to date, as the Royals have dropped seven straight road outings, six games overall and nine in a row against divisional foes. However, K.C. has won seven of their past 10 against left-handed starting pitching, so that doesn't bode well for Q. The White Sox are just 4-17 in Quintana's past 21 starts against the Royals and 1-10 in his past 11 home assignments against Kansas City.

Biggest UNDER run: Twins (7-3-1 past 11 games)

The 'under' has hit in each of the past two games for the Twins down in Texas, both road victories for the Twins. They have had well pitched games from Ervin Santana and Phil Hughes, and they now turn to southpaw Hector Santiago to keep the ball rolling. The 'under' is 4-0 in Minnesota's past four against AL West teams, 5-0-2 in their past seven against left-handed starting pitchers and 15-5-1 in their past 21 games overall on the road. The under is also 4-0 in Santiago's past four road outings and 7-2 in his past nine assignments overall.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (8-1 past nine games, 10-2 past 12 outings)

The 'over' has been a frequent occurrence for the Brew Crew lately, as they are either posting big offensive totals or allowing plenty of runs with poor pitching performances. So far it's been the offense doing the mashing to open their set with the Reds, averaging 10.0 runs per game in the first two of the series. Milwaukee has also allowed an average of 5.6 runs per game over the past eight outings which bodes well for the 'over' most nights. The 'over' is hitting for Cincinnati lately, too, going 5-0 in their past five, 3-0-1 in their past four and 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP. And the 'over' is 10-2-1 in the past 13 meetings at Miller Park, while going 4-1 in the past five meetings overall.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Nationals

As mentioned, the Nationals and Rockies combined for 27 runs in Tuesday's slugfest at Coors Field. The Nationals have been ripped for 20 runs by the Rockies in the first two games in Denver. Despite the struggles at Coors, the Nats are still 7-1 in their past eight road games, 8-1 in their past nine games overall and 7-0 in their past seven road games against right-handed starting pitching. Washington is also 16-5 in their past 21 outings against right-handed pitching. The Nats have fared well with Tanner Roark toeing the slab, too, going 21-7 over his past 28 outings, including 10-3 in his past 13 on the road. The Rockies have won four of their past five at home, but they're just 2-5 in Tyler Chatwood's past seven home starts against a team with a winning record.

Betcha didn’t know: Johnny Cueto is looking to bounce back against the Dodgers on Wednesday night. He served up a grand slam last time out in Colorado, the first time he has allowed a homer with the sacks jammed in his 10-year career. If he bounces back he will need to buck a trend, as the veteran is just 5-6 with a 2.74 ERA in 13 career starts against Los Angeles. For whatever reason he rarely receives any offensive support when facing the boys from Los Angeles. He'll be opposed by Alex Wood, who is 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA in two career starts and four relief appearances against the Giants.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-205) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Nationals (+115) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Dodgers (+125 to +100) vs. Giants

                    • LEADING OFF: Pedroia set to return, Bundy emerging for O's
                      April 26, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      WELCOME BACK

The Red Sox had to wait another day to get Dustin Pedroia back in the lineup. Manager John Farrell said after Tuesday night's game was rained out that his injured second baseman would have been able to play after missing the previous two games. Instead, Pedroia will return a day later when the Red Sox host the Yankees. Pedroia has been out since he was spiked in the left leg during a late slide by Manny Machado on Friday. The Orioles third baseman apologized, and Pedroia said he didn't think Machado was trying to hurt him. Boston ace Chris Sale (1-1, 0.91 ERA) will face Masahiro Tanaka (2-1, 6.00).

                      BIG TIME BUNDY

Dylan Bundy and the AL East-leading Orioles try to keep up their hot start against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bundy (3-1, 1.37) is finally looking like the ace many projected when he made his big league debut at 19 years old in 2012. He's thrown 13 scoreless innings over his last two starts and has yet to allow a home run this season. Alex Cobb (1-2, 4.88) is up for the Rays.

                      GONE FISHING?

Multiple groups have submitted bids to buy the Miami Marlins, and none has yet been accepted, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday. Manfred's comments came after Bloomberg reported a group led by former Yankees captain Derek Jeter and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush won an auction for the team with a $1.3 billion bid. Quogue Capital investment fund founder Wayne Rothbaum has also pursued the Marlins, as did Joshua Kushner, whose older brother is an adviser to President Donald Trump. Completion of any sale by Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria could take months and would require approval by at least 75 percent of the major league teams.

                      GOOD TIMING

The struggling, ailing Mets got a timely break Tuesday when their game against Atlanta was postponed by rain. New York has lost four straight and eight of nine while dealing with a string of injuries, but it gets to skip No. 5 starter Robert Gsellman and pitch Noah Syndergaard against the Braves. The Mets won't dodge Atlanta ace and Tuesday's scheduled starter Julio Teheran, though. The righty was pushed back a day and will try to extend his dominance against the NL East rival, having given up just three earned runs in his last 43 innings (0.63 ERA) against New York dating to 2015.

                      SLOW START

Jose Quintana (0-4, 6.17) seeks his first win of the season when the White Sox host the Royals. Quintana became the ace of Chicago's staff after Chris Sale was traded to Boston in the offseason, but he's struggled early in the role, allowing at least three earned runs in three of his four starts. He hasn't gotten much help, with the Sox scoring four runs total over his four starts. Chicago has been shut out in Quintana's last two appearances.

                      • Giants prospect Mazza pitches perfecto for Class-A Augusta
                        April 25, 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) San Francisco Giants prospect Domenic Mazza pitched the first nine-inning perfect game in South Atlantic League history Tuesday, a 9-0 win for the Class-A Augusta GreenJackets at Lexington.

The 22-year-old left-hander who attended high school outside San Francisco in Concord struck out nine and threw 85 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Mazza (1-2, 3.48 ERA) was a 22nd-round pick by the Giants in the 2015 amateur draft out of Santa Barbara.
