  • MLB roundup: Ninth-inning run sends Mets past Giants
    May 8, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jed Lowrie hit a solo home run with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting the Oakland Athletics to their third consecutive walk-off win, a 3-2 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

Lowrie, who also hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, launched right-hander Deolis Guerra's 1-0 pitch into the right field seats for his fourth home run of the season, his fourth career walk-off hit and second career walk-off homer.

The A's beat the Detroit Tigers on game-ending hits Saturday and Sunday.

Trevor Plouffe also hit a solo home run for the A's, and right-hander Liam Hendriks (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer for the Angels.

    Mets 4, Giants 3

NEW YORK -- Neil Walker's single to right field with two outs in the ninth inning scored Michael Conforto with the winning run as New York edged San Francisco.

The Mets have won seven of their last 10. The Giants have lost four straight and seven of 10. Jeurys Familia (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning.

Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Buster Posey led off the sixth with a blast into the second deck in left for the Giants.

    Dodgers 12, Pirates 1

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Taylor hit a grand slam, and Los Angeles pounded Pittsburgh at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers starter Alex Wood (3-0) struck out 11 with one walk and limited the Pirates to two hits in five scoreless innings. Wood didn't allow a hit until Gregory Polanco singled in the fourth inning.

Taylor went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for the Dodgers, who won their third in a row. Yasiel Puig also homered for Los Angeles. Joc Pederson, who was 3-for-5, Yasmani Grandal and Enrique Hernandez drove in two runs each.

    Padres 5, Rangers 1

SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Schimpf, Austin Hedges and Cory Spangenberg hit solo homers, and Trevor Cahill allowed one hit over 5 1/3 scoreless innings as San Diego opened a four-game, home-and-home set against Texas with a victory at Petco Park.

Cahill and relievers Brad Hand, Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer combined on a two-hitter while striking out 13.

By winning their first interleague game of the season, the Padres snapped a four-game losing streak. The Rangers have lost three in a row and are 2-5 with a game to go on their road trip before returning home to host the Padres on Wednesday.

    Orioles 6, Nationals 4

BALTIMORE -- Joey Rickard, Mark Trumbo and Trey Mancini clobbered first-inning homers off Gio Gonzalez, and Baltimore beat Washington to increase its winning streak to a season-high five games.

Kevin Gausman (2-3) was back on the mound for Baltimore after being ejected in the second inning of his last start May 3 against the Boston Red Sox. He held the Nationals to two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Bryce Harper was also back in the lineup for Washington after missing three games with a groin injury. He had an RBI single in the sixth and homered two innings later to pull the Nationals within 6-3.

    Blue Jays 4, Indians 2

TORONTO -- Marcus Stroman pitched six scoreless innings, Ryan Goins hit a two-run homer and Toronto held on to defeat Cleveland.

Justin Smoak also had a two-run single for the Blue Jays, who have won two in a row, in their first game against the Indians since the American League Championship Series in October.

Stroman (3-2) allowed six hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out one and induced three double-play grounders.

    Cardinals 9, Marlins 4

MIAMI -- Pitcher Carlos Martinez drove in a career-high four runs to lead St. Louis over Miami at Marlins Park.

Martinez, who had been hitless in 11 at-bats this season, went 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Six runners scored while he was at the plate, although he only got credit for four RBIs as two came in on an error.

Martinez (2-3) allowed five hits, two walks and three runs in six innings for the Cardinals, who have won 14 of their past 19 games and seven straight road games.

Miami was led by Marcell Ozuna, who had two homers and three RBIs.

    Yankees 10, Reds 4

CINCINNATI -- Brett Gardner and Matt Holliday homered, and Masahiro Tanaka allowed three earned runs through seven solid innings, lifting New York to its sixth straight victory in the opener of a two-game interleague series against Cincinnati.

Gary Sanchez went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for New York. Gardner and Holliday each hit their sixth home runs of the season in the eighth.

Joey Votto hit a two-run homer in the seventh, his 10th home run of the season, for the Reds, whose five-game win streak ended.

    Royals 7, Rays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Kansas City is the worst road team in baseball, but Tampa Bay committed a season-high four errors at home that led to four runs and the Royals' win at Tropicana Field.

The Royals posted just their third road win with a season-high 13 hits. Kansas City got 10 strikeouts from starter Nate Karns.

Drew Butera, who hadn't driven in a run all season, had a home run and an RBI single for the Royals.

    Cubs-Rockies, ppd.

DENVER -- The start of the three-game series between Chicago and Colorado was delayed a day, as the scheduled Monday night game was postponed due to rain.

The teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday, with the first game scheduled for 12:10 p.m. MT followed by the regularly scheduled game at 6:40 p.m. MT.

    • Armadillo:Tuesday's six-pack

      — A’s 3, Angels 2—Oakland walks off for 3rd day in a row; tremendous!!!! Jed Lowrie homered twice, including the game-winner.

      — Orioles 6, Nationals 4—Baltimore homered three times in first inning.

      — Capitals 5, Penguins 2—Game 7 is in Washington Wednesday nite.

      — Warriors 121, Jazz 95—Next up for Golden State, the Spurs-Rockets survivor.

      — I am told Matt Harvey’s 3-day suspension amounts to roughly $84,000.

      — Get well soon Jameson Taillon; the Pirates’ pitcher is apparently being treated for testicular cancer.

      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

      13) New York-Chicago played an epic 18-inning game on Sunday Night Baseball; games like this are what baseball unique- lot of odd decisions have to be made and it tests the mental toughness of the players. Excellent theater.

Of course, in today’s softening society, some people want there to be tie games in baseball. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it is.

      12) One thing that is really irritating; hearing someone who is getting paid to watch baseball complain that a game went extra innings. You have a cushy job; too bad there is a small bit of inconvenience involved. If you quit your job, I’m guessing a ton of people would wait outside in a snowstorm to take your place.

      11) 583 pitches in the game; umpire Joe West is 64 years old. Hope he has today off. He basically umpired a doubleheader behind the plate Sunday night.

      10) Interesting stuff on the Interweb about Kansas State football and succession plans for 77-year old coach Bill Snyder, who battled throat cancer this past winter.

Snyder is an icon in Manhattan, KS—it is hard to describe how pathetic Kansas State was before he became coach. Barry Switzer’s Oklahoma teams used to beat K-State 64-3 without breaking a sweat, but Snyder made the Wildcats winners and he carries a lot of influence- he wants his son Sean to take his place as head coach.

Others have resisted this succession plan, but some of those others have moved on to other jobs. It appears as if Snyder will get his way and his son will succeed him, but the real question will be, can Sean Snyder succeed as his dad’s successor?

      9) In France, they hold elections on weekends and get a higher voter turnout than we do in this country.

      8) Mets are so spineless they pushed back Matt Harvey’s next start until Friday in Milwaukee- they don’t want him starting at home right away. Hell, part of his punishment should be having to pitch in front of the home fans, who will give him the grief he deserves if he doesn’t do well.

If Harvey pitched well, the home fans would love him, no doubt.

      7) Cincinnati Reds in first place after five weeks of baseball? Surprising.

      6) Patrick Ewing is going to be an interesting study as the new basketball coach at Georgetown- the Hoyas picked up a grad transfer this weekend from South Dakota (43.8% inside arc, 31.6% outside arc), a team that won the Summit League regular season title- Monday they offered a 9th grader (Class of 2020) from Washington DC a scholarship.

      5) Red Sox scored a total of 15 runs in Chris Sale’s first six starts; they scored 17 in his 7th start, Sunday in Minnesota.

      4) If Kyle Lowry stays with the Toronto Raptors, they can offer him a contract worth $205M for five years; if he goes elsewhere, he can get $152M for four years. I’m not sure of the tax implications of playing in Canada, but it sounds like he would be forfeiting a lot of cash if he chooses to leave Toronto.

      3) Average attendance at all minor league baseball games in April: 3,986, best-ever for April. Owning a minor league team is a solid investment.

      2) Former New Mexico/Ole Miss guard Cullen Neal will be a grad transfer at St Mary’s next year; Neal was headed to St Mary’s out of high school, but then Steve Alford got the UCLA head coaching job and his dad Craig Neal inherited the Lobos’ job, so Cullen stayed in Albuquerque and played two years, but the fans were tough on him when the team struggled, so Cullen transferred to Ole Miss. Craig got fired this past spring.

      1) This from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, on the Matt Harvey story:

“Several hours after Harvey texted a Mets coach (or texted the coach back, depending on who tells the story) to let him know that he was ill and wouldn’t be coming to Citi Field for Saturday night’s game against the Marlins, the Mets’ pitcher was visited at his Manhattan apartment by a couple men — Mets security people — sent by the team to see what was happening with him.

Harvey, it seems, sensed the Mets were checking up on him with their surprise visit around 10 p.m. (to see if his headache story checked out). Meanwhile, people close to the Mets suggest that, after many messages went unreturned, the security men were merely checking on him (to see if he was OK, or needed help).”

Harvey is a free agent after the 2018 season. Everyone involved needs him to pitch well; Harvey so he can break the bank next winter, the Mets so they can get rid of him before than and still get someone of value in return.

              • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                May 8, 2017

Hottest team: Yankees (6-0 last six)

Following an 18-inning marathon victory over the Cubs on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the defending champions, New York didn’t let up in Monday’s 10-4 victory at Cincinnati. The Yankees extended their winning streak to six games, which is two shy of a hot streak they accumulated back in April. The Bronx Bombers have had their way in interleague play by racking up an 8-2 mark against the National League Central, including a 5-2 ledger on the highway.

The one pitcher in the Yankees’ rotation that has struggled of late takes the mound on Tuesday as CC Sabathia is winless in his last three outings. The 2007 AL Cy Young award winner allowed a total of 13 earned runs in his past two starts (9.2 innings), but the Yankees rallied past the Orioles and Blue Jays at home by scoring a combined 22 runs. However, the Yankees are 5-1 in his six starts this season, while New York owns a solid 13-4 mark in its last 17 contests against right-handed starters, facing Cincinnati’s Tim Adleman.

Coldest team: Giants (2-7 last nine)

After getting outscored by Cincinnati, 31-5 in an ugly sweep by the Reds this past weekend, the Giants showed some fight on Monday. However, San Francisco couldn’t hold on to several leads in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Mets, the fourth straight game the Giants have been limited to three runs or fewer. The Giants fell to 2-5 in road series openers, as six of those games have been decided by one run.

Jeff Samardzija doesn’t have a victory to his name this season for San Francisco, but the right-hander has pitched better lately. Samardzija is coming off a pair of no-decisions in Giants’ victories over the Padres and Dodgers, while allowing four runs (two earned runs) in 15 innings of work. Samardzija pitched well in a 2-0 loss to the Mets last season at AT&T Park, giving up two earned runs and three hits in seven innings, but Noah Syndergaard outdueled the former Notre Dame wide receiver by allowing two hits in eight innings for New York.

Hottest pitcher: Kyle Freeland, Rockies (3-1, 2.65 ERA)

The Cubs received a break on Monday following its 18-inning loss to the Yankees on Sunday night, as Chicago was rained out at Colorado. The Rockies and Cubs play a double-header on Tuesday as Freeland will take the ball in the second contest at night. The Colorado southpaw has seen the UNDER cash in all six outings this season, while the Rockies own a 5-1 record in those starts. The Denver native has allowed one earned run in five outings, including solid starts at home against the Giants and Dodgers.

Coldest pitcher: Bartolo Colon, Braves (1-3, 6.27 ERA)

Atlanta hits the road following a dreadful 1-5 homestand, which included a sweep at the hands of St. Louis. The Braves travel to Houston as Colon has yielded 28 hits and 15 earned runs in his last three starts, while coming off a 16-5 defeat to his old team, the Mets last Thursday. Atlanta has yet to lose consecutive starts made by Colon this season, while the Braves are 4-1 in their last five games away from SunTrust Park.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (7-1 last eight)

Oakland picked up a pair of walk-off wins against Detroit this past weekend, while scoring at least six runs in each of their last three victories. The A’s pitching didn’t help matters during this OVER stretch by giving up at least five runs in the last eight games. Oakland continues its series with Los Angeles as the two AL West rivals cashed the UNDER in six of the first eight matchups. Jharel Cotton began the season with four consecutive UNDERS for Oakland, but the right-hander is riding back-to-back OVERS his last two starts as he heads to the hill on Tuesday.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (7-0 last seven)

Cleveland returned to Toronto for the first time since capturing the AL pennant last October as the Indians fell to the Blue Jays, 4-2. The Tribe hit the UNDER for the seventh straight game as well as the seventh consecutive meeting with the Blue Jays since last season. Cleveland’s offense has disappeared of late by scoring three runs or fewer in all seven of these contests, while not posting at least four runs on the road since a 7-0 victory over the White Sox on April 22.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Orioles

The Beltway Series began on Monday with Baltimore jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and holding off Washington, 6-4. The Orioles went deep three times off Gio Gonzalez in the first inning as Baltimore moved their winning streak to five. Washington suffered only its second loss in six road series openers, while losing consecutive games for just the third time this season.

Cy Young winner Max Scherzer bounced back from a loss to the Mets by shutting down the Diamondbacks last Wednesday, 4-2. Scherzer scattered two hits and allowed one earned run in seven innings, while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Washington owns a perfect 3-0 record in Scherzer’s three road starts this season, as the Nationals have won 11 straight away outings by the right-hander dating back to last June.

Veteran right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez is making his first start since April 29 as he tossed three innings of relief against the Red Sox on May 3. Baltimore has won four of Jimenez’s five starts this season, including a perfect 2-0 mark at Camden Yards. The O’s have compiled a 4-1 record in home Game 2’s, while capturing seven of the last eight matchups with the Nationals since 2015.

Betcha didn’t know: The Diamondbacks and Tigers hook up for a series in Phoenix as Robbie Ray heads to the mound for Arizona. Ray is facing his former team for the first time since pitching for Detroit in 2014 as the southpaw won only once in five tries against interleague foes last season.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-200) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Cardinals (+110) at Marlins

Biggest line move: Rangers (-120 to -140) at Padres

                • LEADING OFF: Harvey back, Trout still out, Sabathia steps up
                  May 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                  BACK TO WORK

Matt Harvey rejoins the Mets after serving a three-day suspension imposed by the team for not showing up at Citi Field for Saturday's game. New York manager Terry Collins said Harvey will have to explain what happened to his teammates. ''You stand up, be accountable and move on. And you know what? People forget about it,'' Collins said. Harvey was sent home from the ballpark Sunday before his scheduled start against Miami, yet another flap for a star pitcher fined for missing a mandatory team workout before the 2015 playoffs. The right-hander is expected to return to the rotation Friday at Milwaukee.

                  NOT YET

Angels outfielder Mike Trout is still slowed by a tight left hamstring and isn't ready to play. Trout was out of the lineup for the fourth time in five games for the series opener at Oakland. An MRI on the two-time AL MVP showed no damage. Trout missed only three games in each of the past two seasons. He is hitting .355 with eight home runs and 21 RBIs.

                  MIGHTY CC AT THE PLATE

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia has hit two of his three career home runs against the Reds, the team he faces in Cincinnati. The big lefty homered off Elizardo Ramirez at Great American Ball Park in 2005 and again off Homer Bailey in 2008 at Miller Park. Sabathia is 0 for 2 this season in interleague play and .214 career with 33 strikeouts in 115 at-bats.

                  WATCH AND LEARN

Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias has been wild but effective in his first two starts this season, posting an 0.84 ERA but walking eight in 10 2/3 innings. The 20-year-old could learn a thing or two from his next opponent, Ivan Nova. The Pirates right-hander has allowed just four walks in 17 starts since Pittsburgh acquired him from the Yankees last season - a 106 2/3-inning stretch that includes five complete games.

                  SO LONG, SLUGGE
                  R

Ryan Howard might have taken his last swings after Atlanta released the 37-year-old from his contract at Triple-A Gwinnett. The Braves signed Howard shortly after the season began, hoping he might boost their bench. But the first baseman hit just .184 with one homer and five RBIs. Howard was the 2006 NL MVP, helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series and has 382 career home runs.

                  • Braves release former MVP Ryan Howard from minor league deal
                    May 8, 2017

ATLANTA (AP) Ryan Howard doesn't want to retire from baseball.

He may not have a choice.

The former National League MVP was released from his minor league contract Monday by the Atlanta Braves after he struggled at Triple-A Gwinnett, a major blow to the 37-year-old slugger's hopes of carrying on with another team after a long career with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Less than a week after Howard insisted ''there's more in the tank,'' the Braves decided otherwise. He lasted only 11 games with the G-Braves, hitting .184 with one homer and five RBIs.

The Braves were hoping Howard could bolster an anemic bench and serve as designated hitter in interleague games. But his options were limited, since he could only play first base and Atlanta already has Freddie Freeman.

Going a different direction, the Braves completed a deal with Minnesota for utility player Danny Santana. The Twins received left-handed reliever Kevin Chapman and cash.

Howard was once among baseball's most feared hitters. In 2006, his first full season as Philadelphia's starting first baseman, he put together one of the greatest stat lines in baseball history: 58 homers, 149 RBIs, a .313 average and an MVP award.

The Phillies would go on to win five straight NL East titles, a stretch that included two trips to the World Series and a championship in 2008. Howard averaged 41 homers and 129 RBIs during that run, finishing in the top 10 of the MVP voting every season.

But his career was forever altered on the last play of the 2011 division series against the St. Louis Cardinals, when he tore his Achilles tendon running out a grounder for the final out of a 1-0 loss.

He hasn't been the same since.

Plagued by one injury after another, Howard's production plummeted the last five seasons. In 2016, he showed flashes of power with 25 homers but batted a career-worst .196, prompting the Phillies to decline a $25 million option for this season. He was honored by the team before its final home game but insisted that he had no plans to retire.

Howard made it clear last week that he still believes he can contribute.

''If you walk away, don't walk away with something still left in the tank,'' he said. ''Then you're wondering like, `Man, what could I have done?' When I'm done playing, I want to leave it all out on the field.''

Howard was even willing to go to the minors, taking a fraction of the salary he once made and with no guarantees that the Braves would bring him up to the majors.

''Once you leave the minor leagues, you want to not come back,'' Howard said. ''But it's the path that I'm on, the journey that I'm on.''

That journey may have ended, especially since he missed all of spring training before the Braves finally called. There's clearly not a lot of interest in an aging slugger with a cumulative .226 average over the last five years.

The Braves decided Santana was a better option for the bench. The 26-year-old has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues, hitting .276 with 10 homers, 76 RBIs and 41 stolen bases. This season with the Twins, he's hitting .200 with one homer in 13 games.

Chapman was claimed off waivers by the Braves late in spring training after spending parts of the last four seasons with the Houston Astros. Control has always been an issue for the lefty, who had a 7.71 ERA in nine games at Gwinnett after failing to earn a spot on Atlanta's big league roster.

                    • Cubs place Heyward on 10-day DL, trade Szczur to Padres
                      May 8, 2017

DENVER (AP) The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day disabled list with a sore knuckle on his right hand.

The move is retroactive to Saturday. Heyward is hitting .253 with three homers and 17 RBIs.

In another transaction Monday before their game against Colorado, the Cubs traded outfielder Matt Szczur to San Diego for minor league right-hander Justin Hancock. Szczur was designated for assignment Saturday to make roster room for a fresh arm in an overworked bullpen, a difficult choice for the Cubs. He hit .211 with three RBIs for Chicago this season.

The Cubs also selected the contract of right-hander Dylan Floro from Triple-A Iowa. Floro was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in eight appearances with Iowa this season.

The 26-year-old Floro was signed to a minor league deal by Chicago in the offseason.

Hancock, also 26, was 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 10 relief appearances for Double-A San Antonio.

                        May 8, 2017

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon underwent surgery for suspected testicular cancer at Allegheny General Hospital on Monday morning, the team announced.

Taillon, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a groin injury on Saturday, alerted the Pirates' medical staff of an abnormality. The 25-year-old consulted with Dr. John C. Lyne, who performed the surgery.

"Jameson has again proven to us what a strong person he is by the way in which he has reacted to this development. We are appreciative of Dr. Lyne and the staff at Allegheny General Hospital for their invaluable expertise and efforts in caring for Jameson," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said.

"We have told Jameson that our only priority is his health and well-being. His teammates, our coaches, baseball staff and entire organization will support him in his recovery in every possible way and we will keep him in our thoughts and prayers."

The recommended treatment plan for Taillon is pending further testing.

--Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout underwent an MRI on his ailing left hamstring and the results were "clean and normal," general manager Billy Eppler told reporters.

Trout, who has been sidelined for back-to-back games with the injury, likely will sit out Monday's series opener against the Oakland Athletics.

The two-time American League MVP said he expects to play in Tuesday's second game of the three-game series.

Trout, who is in the midst of a 17-game hitting streak, is tied with New York Yankees second baseman Starlin Castro with an AL-best .355 batting average entering play on Monday.

--New York Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters that the team hopes to have suspended right-hander Matt Harvey ready to start Friday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Harvey was suspended for three days on Sunday for violation of team rules. Collins said Monday that Harvey "needs to address some guys" upon his return.

Collins was also asked if he feels that Harvey's teammates respect him, with the manager responding, "I can't answer that. I don't know. Can't answer that. I don't know."

The Mets would not disclose Harvey's infraction, but multiple outlets reported that the 28-year-old was suspended for not showing up to the ballpark on Saturday.

--Outfielder Bryce Harper will return from a three-game absence due to a groin injury when the Washington Nationals open a four-game, home-and-home interleague series against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Harper, who will bat third in the lineup and start in right field, enters Monday's game with a majors-best 35 runs scored and .504 on-base percentage.

The 2015 National League MVP has been sidelined since being removed from Washington's 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Harper, 24, is batting .375 with nine homers and 27 RBIs in 28 games this season.

--Yet another back injury landed left-hander Brett Anderson on the disabled list, forcing the Chicago Cubs to look for options in their starting rotation.

The Cubs placed their No. 5 starter on the DL Sunday with a lower-back strain after consecutive rocky outings, including leaving the game Saturday night against the New York Yankees in the first inning.

The 29-year-old Anderson, who has a history of back problems, was able to get only one batter out while giving up five runs against the Yankees before he was pulled with lower-back tightness.

In his last two starts, Anderson has thrown only 1 2/3 innings while giving up 12 earned runs. He is 2-2 and his ERA has ballooned to 8.18 in 22 innings and six starts.

--The Miami Marlins placed Martin Prado on the 10-day disabled list and recalled fellow infielder J.T. Riddle from Triple-A New Orleans.

Prado was diagnosed with a strained right hamstring after aggravating the injury during the seventh inning of Miami's 7-0 rout of the New York Mets on Sunday. The 33-year-old initially sustained the injury while playing for his native Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

Prado is batting .290 with two homers and six RBIs in 17 games in 2017 since signing a three-year, $40 million contract in the offseason.

Riddle batted .143 with one homer and three RBIs in eight games with the Marlins from April 11 to April 18. The 25-year-old hit .290 with two homers and six RBIs in 15 games with New Orleans.

--The Toronto Blue Jays placed Russell Martin on the 10-day disabled list and recalled fellow catcher Mike Ohlman from Triple-A Buffalo.

Martin is being plagued by nerve irritation in his left shoulder.

The 34-year-old Martin is batting .197 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 23 games this season.

Ohlman was hitting .246 with seven home runs and 13 RBIs in 23 games with Buffalo.

                              Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                              13) Reds’ rookie pitcher Amir Garrett is 3-2, 4.25 in his first six major league starts, but was sent back to AAA by the Reds this week, to “manage his innings” according to the Reds. Teams don’t like younger pitchers to throw 20%+ more innings than they did the year before, they say it leads to injuries.

Here is what it really is: Cincinnati wants to manage Garrett’s service time, so they can keep him an extra year before he becomes arbitration-eligible. They’re pretty sure now that Garrett is a keeper, so they’re going to keep him in AAA for a few weeks, again to control his big league service time.

But here’s the thing; the Reds are in first place- you’d think that would matter to them, and they’d try to drum up some enthusiasm in the community, instead of sending a promising young pitcher down to save a few bucks down the road.

                              12) At one point last year, the Chicago Cubs were 40-16; as I type this, they’re 17-16 this year, so it isn’t inconceivable that the NL Central could be wide open this season.

                              11) Miami Marlins are having a hard time with Joe West’s umpiring crew this week; Don Mattingly got tossed the last two nights- last nite, he was told to take a hike in the bottom of the 1st inning, after Adam Wainwright had thrown 11 pitches. Christian Yelich got called out on an awful pitch and he got tossed, too. Marlins have injury issues; which makes Yelich getting tossed early even more damaging.

                              10) Orioles will be without closer Zach Britton (forearm) until the All-Star break, very bad news for them.

                              9) I wasn’t aware that starting pitchers work out after they come out of games; Kendall Graveman did his workout Monday night after his seven innings, then took a shower and put uniform gear back on to watch the 11th inning in the dugout as the A’s beat the Angels 3-2.

                              8) Astros 8, Braves 3—Houston scored five runs before they made an out in this game. Bartolo Colon is struggling badly this season- his ERA is 7.22. Tuesday was 15th anniversary of a game in 2002 when AJ Hinch homered off of Colon—Hinch is the Astros’ manager now.

                              7) Orioles 5, Nationals 4 (12)– This was 10th time since joining Washington that Max Scherzer carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, the most in the major leagues during that time.

Whatever Buck Showalter makes managing the Orioles, it ain’t enough. He is the best manager in baseball. Look at his pitching staff and explain to me how they’re 22-10.

                              6) Brewers 11, Red Sox 7—Eric Thames hit his 13th homer here; someone who is playing in Korea this year is going to get a major league look next year, based in part on Thames’ success in Milwaukee this season. Whatever he worked on in his three years in Korea, it sure as hell has worked for him.

                              5) Senators 4, Rangers 2—Couple of Canadian teams are still alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Ottawa advances to play the Pittsburgh-Washington survivor.

                              4) Spurs 110, Rockets 107 OT—Hard-fought game between two really good teams; Kawhi Leonard got hurt, which is huge going forward. Houston was only 16-48 on the arc.

                              3) Rangers-Sabres will freeze their butts off outdoors in Queens next winter on New Years’ Day, as the NHL Winter Classic comes to New York City. These events have been popular; I personally can’t think of a worse way to spend a winter afternoon than being outdoors.

                              2) Jonathan Simmons once paid $150 to try out for a D-League team; now he’s a key contributor for the Spurs. Is this a great country or what?

                              1) Former President Jimmy Carter came out this week and said he voted for Bernie Sanders for President; yikes. These are certainly strange times we’re living in.
