  • MLB notebook: Giants' Pence (hamstring) on DL
    May 15, 2017

The San Francisco Giants placed outfielder Hunter Pence on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain on Monday.

The move, which is retroactive to Saturday, marks Pence's fifth trip to the disabled list since the start of the 2015 season.

In a corresponding move, the Giants recalled outfielder Mac Williamson from Triple-A Sacramento.

Pence has been sidelined for the past two games with the injury. The 34-year-old came off the bench to play in the late stages of a 17-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.

--Chicago White Sox catcher Geovany Soto will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to miss a minimum of three months, the club announced.

Soto will have surgery Tuesday to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, which landed him on the disabled list twice this season.

The 34-year-old, who was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Monday, is batting .190 with three homers and nine RBIs in 13 games after signing a one-year deal with Chicago in the offseason.

--The Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Steve Pearce on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right calf and recalled right-handed reliever Leonel Campos.

Pearce left the game Sunday against the Seattle Mariners in the second inning after sliding into second base with a double. Primarily a left fielder this season, Pearce is batting .205 with four homers and 10 RBIs.

Campos had been optioned Sunday to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons to make room for right-hander Aaron Sanchez. In three outings with Toronto, Campos has allowed two hits, one walk and no runs while striking out one in 2 2/3 innings.

          • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
            May 16, 2017

Hottest team: Rangers (6-0 last six)

Texas stumbled out of the gate by starting 5-10 following playoff appearances the last two seasons. However, the Rangers have picked things up of late by winning 11 of their past 15 games at Globe Life Park, including five straight victories at home. Texas completed home sweeps of San Diego and Oakland, while needing comebacks in all five wins, including a pair of walk-off victories.

The Rangers begin a three-game home series with the Phillies prior to a tough nine-game road swing through Detroit, Boston, and Toronto. Texas is taking advantage of facing below .500 teams during this current winning stretch as Philadelphia is the fourth straight team with a losing record facing the Rangers. Yu Darvish heads to the mound in Tuesday’s opener, as the right-hander is unbeaten in his last four starts, while Texas has won each of his last three home outings after losing the first two to Cleveland and Oakland.

Coldest team: Orioles (0-4 last four)

Baltimore continues its road trip after getting swept at Kansas City this past weekend. The loss that hurts the most is Sunday’s 9-8 defeat to the Royals after the Orioles squandered a 5-0 lead. The O’s have dropped six of their last seven games away from Camden Yards as they travel to Detroit to face a Tigers’ squad that is returning home from a 4-5 west coast swing.

Detroit has won five of its past six series openers, but the Tigers struggled with the Orioles last season by compiling a 2-5 record in seven meetings. Southpaw Wade Miley received some bad luck in his previous start as the Orioles couldn’t hold onto a 6-2 lead heading into the eighth inning as Baltimore lost at Washington, 7-6. The good news is the Orioles own a 3-1 record when Miley starts on the highway.

Hottest pitcher: Dallas Keuchel, Astros (6-0, 1.69 ERA)

Keuchel is not only the hottest hurler of late, but also the best pitcher in baseball this season. The Houston southpaw is coming off his sixth victory of the season last Thursday by beating the Yankees, 3-2 as a short road underdog. Keuchel allowed one unearned run in six innings of work as the Astros improved to 4-0 in his four starts away from Minute Maid Park. The 2015 Cy Young winner gets the ball at Miami as the Astros look to improve to 8-1 the last nine games.

Coldest pitcher: Jason Hammel, Royals (1-4, 5.97 ERA)

Kansas City is heating up at the right time by winning six of the past seven contests, but Hammel is responsible for the only loss in this stretch. Hammel was knocked around by the Rays, 12-1 as he went seven innings and gave up 13 hits and seven runs last Wednesday. The right-hander has one victory in seven starts this season, but it did come in the underdog role against Cleveland earlier this month as the Royals are a short ‘dog on Tuesday against the Yankees.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (15-1-3 last 19)

New York may not be putting up wins of late after dropping its fifth straight game on Monday at Arizona, but the Mets are cashing OVERS at a rapid pace. The Mets have allowed at least six runs during each contest of this five-game skid, while going 9-0-1 to the OVER in the past 10 games away from Citi Field. That OVER streak could come to an end against Arizona as Zack Greinke takes the mound for the D-backs, coming off five consecutive quality starts, but Arizona is 4-1 to the OVER in his five home outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (4-1 last five)

Detroit is back home after a lengthy road swing, as its offense seeks some consistency. The Tigers scored only four runs in the final three games against the Angels after putting up seven runs in the series opener. Detroit is receiving solid pitching from its starters as each hurler has gone into the sixth inning in six straight games. Matt Boyd has yielded three earned runs or less in six consecutive outings for Detroit, but the Tigers have scored three runs or less in five of seven of his seven starts this season.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Cardinals

Boston ended its long championship drought in 2004 by sweeping St. Louis in the World Series, while beating the Cardinals again for the title in 2013. These two squads meet for an interleague showdown at Busch Stadium for a brief two-game set as the Cardinals try to stay on fire.

St. Louis has won eight of its past nine games, while coming off back-to-back home victories over the defending champion Cubs. The Cardinals started the season at 3-9, but have vaulted into first place of the NL Central in nearly a month’s span. One of the main reasons for that improvement has been the pitching of Lance Lynn, who is 4-0 in his last five trips to the mound, while allowing six earned runs in this stretch.

The Red Sox have stumbled to a 2-4 mark the previous six contests after plating 17 runs at Minnesota on May 7. Eduardo Rodriguez hasn’t received a decision in his last three outings for Boston, but the southpaw has tossed six innings in each of his past four starts. Rodriguez faces a St. Louis club that owns a 3-3 record against left-handed starting pitchers this season, while the Cardinals have seen a southpaw starter only twice in the past 25 contests.

            Betcha didn’t know:
The biggest interleague series by name may be the Red Sox and Cardinals, but two first-place squads meet in Minnesota as the Twins host the Rockies. Colorado has fared well away from Coors Field this season, especially in series openers by posting a 4-1 record. The Twins have also been respectable in home Game 1’s by going 4-2, including three straight wins in this situation.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-200) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+105) at Twins

Biggest line move: Tigers (-105 to -125) vs. Orioles

                • LEADING OFF: Rockies-Twins in surprising 1st-place matchup
                  May 16, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                  NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Two of baseball's biggest surprises square off when the Colorado Rockies visit Minnesota in an interleague matchup of first-place teams. Ervin Santana (6-1, 1.50 ERA) starts for the Twins against rookie German Marquez (1-2, 4.88). Both pitchers are coming off excellent outings - Santana threw two-hit ball for seven shutout innings at Cleveland, and Marquez limited the World Series champion Cubs to three hits in eight scoreless innings. The 22-year-old Marquez took a no-hitter into the seventh against Chicago and even had a two-run single for his first major league hit.

                  A GIANT 20?

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw goes for his 20th career win over the Giants when he starts against Johnny Cueto at AT&T Park. Kershaw is 19-9 with 1.66 ERA overall vs. San Francisco, including 11-4 with a 1.36 ERA by the Bay. Kershaw has already faced the Giants twice this year, while Cueto has opposed the Dodgers twice. In their one head-to-head matchup, Cueto won at Dodger Stadium.

                  SURPRISING SHOWDOWN

Royals left-hander Jason Vargas takes a 13-inning scoreless streak into his start against the upstart Yankees. The 34-year-old Vargas has suddenly emerged as one of the AL's top performers, leading the league with a 1.01 ERA through seven starts. He'll get his toughest test yet against Aaron Judge and a high-powered New York lineup, which leads the AL in runs, homers and on-base percentage. Big righty Michael Pineda is up for the Yankees.

                  TRY, TRY AGAIN

Embattled right-hander Matt Harvey tries to get back on track in his second start for the New York Mets since serving a three-game suspension imposed by the team for skipping a home game after a late night on the town. Harvey lost at Milwaukee last Friday, dropping to 2-3 with a 5.62 ERA. This time, he returns to Arizona - the site of his successful major league debut in 2012.

                  SCENE SHIFT

Freddie Freeman and Atlanta swept a two-game series in Toronto, and now they'll try to take two more from the Blue Jays at home. The teams switch stadiums without a break, with Mike Foltynewicz starting for the Braves vs. Joe Biagini. Freeman kept up his torrid pace and is hitting .343 with 14 home runs and 25 RBIs.

                  • MLB notebook: Mariners' Cano put on disabled list
                    May 16, 2017

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a sore right quadriceps, the team announced Tuesday.

This is the first time Cano has been on the disabled list since June 27-Aug. 8, 2006, when he was sidelined with a strained left hamstring.

To take Cano's spot on the roster, the Mariners called up outfielder Boog Powell from Triple-A Tacoma.

Cano, 34, has missed the past five games with the quadriceps injury. He is hitting .296 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.

Taylor Motter has been getting most of the playing time at second base in Cano's absence.

--The New York Mets placed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the 10-day disabled due to his sprained left thumb, the team announced.

The move was made retroactively to Sunday. Cabrera aggravated a previous injury to the thumb on Saturday and missed the last two games. The 31-year-old is batting .257 with three homers this season.

New York filled the roster spot by signing right-hander Neil Ramirez. The Mets moved right-hander Jeurys Familia (blood clot in shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list to open up a 40-man roster spot for Ramirez.

--The Toronto Blue Jays promoted outfielder Darrell Ceciliani from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned right-handed pitcher Leonel Campos to the Bisons before Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Braves.

After outfielder/infielder Steve Pearce (right calf) was put on the disabled list Monday, the Blue Jays recalled Campos, who pitched 2 1/3 innings in the 10-6 loss to the Braves.

The Blue Jays had a two-player bench for that game and Ceciliani will provide an extra outfielder. In 21 games at Buffalo, he hit .145 with three RBIs.

                      13) Further proof the world is slowly going crazy…..

“Volunteers at an overdose prevention site in Vancouver say they saved the life of a (pet) rat named Snuggles after the little rodent overdosed on heroin.”

CNBC reported the pet rat was brought in by a woman who said it had eaten heroin off a table.

                      12) Cosmopolitan Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas started charging customers to park this week, the 23rd Strip property to charge customers to park in visits to resorts. Self-park is $7-10 a day; valet parking is $13-18 a day.

                      11) Supposedly, one of the main reasons that Ben Simmons spent his six months of college at LSU is because lot of higher-profile college programs weren’t fond of the idea of having a camera crew following him around all season, for the infomercial his people did on him that aired on Showtime.

I mean, how do you do a 90-minute “documentary” on a basketball player, but never have either his high school or college coach on to talk? Supposedly Simmons has grown another two inches since we last saw him play– he is now just about 7-feet tall. I’ll be very curious to see him play in NBA games.

                      10) Since 2005, there have been 30 games that weren’t played at Coors Field that had a total of 12 or more runs. Under was 17-13 in those games.

                      9) Washington Redskins signed free agent LB Nico Marley, grandson of music legend Bob Marley; his dad Rohan Marley played ball at Miami.

                      8) 16.9% of Ben Roethlisberger’s passing attempts last year went 20+ yards downfield; the next highest percentage of any NFL QB last year was Cam Newton, at 13.9%.

Tulsa/Oklahoma State will play a home/home series starting this winter, which is very unusual.

                      4) Back in late January, Alabama opened as -4.5 over Florida State in the college football season opener this fall. That spread is now Alabama -7.

                      3) Alabama hired Yasir Rosemond as an assistant basketball coach; he has extensive recruiting ties in the Atlanta area- he previously was an assistant at Georgia and Oregon.

                                May 17, 2017

Many teams with high expectations this season in Major League Baseball have fallen below the standards set by the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. However, several other squads that were expected to not be a factor in the pennant race have turned into early surprises.

First, we’ll take a look at the teams that have exceeded early expectations. The Twins finished last season with the worst record in baseball at 59-103, but Minnesota has put together a respectable 19-16 record through 35 games. Minnesota’s win total was released at 75 ½, which actually wasn’t the lowest in the American League, as the Twins were predicted to win one more game than Kansas City and Oakland.

In the NL West, both Arizona and Colorado have jumped out to hot starts, while the Rockies own the second-best record in the National League behind Washington. The Rockies won only 75 games last season, but have started 25-15 to put themselves on a good pace to bust their 80 ½-win total. Arizona fell well below their victory total of 82 last season by winning 69 games, but the D-backs are 23-18 at the quarter-point of the season on a 77 ½ total.

The defending champion Cubs are suffering through an expected World Series hangover at 19-19 as eclipsing their win total of 95 ½ will be hard to reach. The NL East is a complete disaster behind the Nationals as the Mets have fallen apart of late and are in danger of being on a path of finishing UNDER 88 ½ victories at 16-22.

The Astros are playing phenomenal baseball at the quarter point by winning 28 of their first 40 contests. Houston began the season with a win total of 91 ½, which equals a .567 winning percentage. The Astros are currently playing .700 ball and own a decisive advantage inside the AL West.
