  • Nats acquire A's RPs Madson, Doolittle
    July 16, 2017

CINCINNATI -- The Washington Nationals were seeking some stability for their beleaguered bullpen. On Sunday afternoon, they completed a trade with the Oakland Athletics that could solve their most pressing issue.

The Nationals acquired right-hander Ryan Madson and left-hander Sean Doolittle from the A's in exchange for right-hander Blake Treinen and two minor league prospects. The Nats also sent left-hander Jesus Luzardo and third baseman Sheldon Neuse to the A's.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo announced the trade during Sunday's 14-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

"With Madson and Doolittle, we get two quality human beings, first of all," Rizzo said. "Great teammates, guys who are experienced, guys with big stuff. Both are capable of getting the final three outs which will help stabilize our entire bullpen."

Despite Washington's 55-36 record and 9 1/2-game lead in the National League East, the bullpen has been cause for concern with a 5.34 ERA, which ranks last in the major leagues. The Nats have lost six games this season in which they led after eight innings.

"We needed some help," Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. "Both guys have been closers at some point in time. They got what they wanted -- some young players. You have to give up something to get something. This will shore up the back end of the bullpen."

In Madson's past 13 outings, the 36-year-old has allowed just one earned run in 14 innings with five holds and 12 strikeouts. He did not walk a batter during this stretch and did not allow any of the seven runners he inherited to score.

In the 30-year-old Doolittle, the Nationals get a dominant left-hander who has not allowed a hit to a left-handed batter in 23 appearances this season. Lefties are 0-for-23 with 12 strikeouts and no walks against him.

"He's been doing that his whole career," Rizzo said.

Either Madson or Doolittle could fill the Nationals' fluid closer's role.

Madson had 30 saves in 2016 and Doolittle has 36 saves during his six major league seasons, including 22 in 2014 when he was an American League All-Star.

"They're both capable of getting out both lefty and right-handed hitters," Rizzo said. "They're versatile. No egos. They can pitch both the eighth and the ninth. Both have done it before.

"Dusty will stabilize the bullpen and set on one guy and get a little rhythm back there."

Washington paid a price to acquire Madson and Doolittle, giving up a proven big-league reliever in Treinen and two highly regarded prospects.

Treinen, 29, was 8-11 with a 3.39 ERA in 185 games for the Nationals from 2014 to 2017 and currently ranks second in the major leagues in double-play grounders.

"It's unfortunate to watch Blake go," Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy said. "You give up a quality piece to get two quality pieces."

Luzardo, 19, is 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA in three starts for the Nationals' affiliate in the Gulf Coast Rookie League. He was selected in the third round of the 2016 draft.

Neuse, 22, is hitting .291 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs in 77 games for Class A Hagerstown. He was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2016 draft.

The Nationals also transferred right-hander Joe Ross to the 60-day disabled list. Ross will undergo Tommy John surgery next week and will miss the remainder of the season.

"It came together pretty quick," Rizzo said. "Conversations we had with Oakland for a couple weeks focused on one of their relievers. Then a day or so ago it morphed into a bigger deal."

    • LEADING OFF: Keuchel makes rehab start, Nats boost bullpen
      July 16, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

      DALLAS DAY

Astros ace Dallas Keuchel is expected to throw two innings in a rehabilitation start for Double-A Corpus Christi. The lefty hasn't pitched since June 2 because of a pinched nerve in his neck. He's 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA for the AL West leaders, and the former Cy Young Award winner likely will need multiple starts in the minors before he comes off the disabled list.

      BULLPEN BOOST

The Nationals are all set for reliable relievers Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle to join them after making a trade to address their biggest need. The NL East leaders got them Sunday in a deal that sent pitcher Blake Treinen and two minor leaguers to Oakland. Washington has converted just 22 of their 36 save chances this year, and wanted to solidify its bullpen as it looks ahead to October.

      BUT IT LOOKS SO NICE

The new SunTrust Park in Atlanta is certainly pretty - but it's been pretty tough on Braves ace Julio Teheran. While the right-hander is 6-0 with a 2.53 ERA in nine road starts, he hasn't been able to consistently show that form at home. Teheran will try to improve his unsightly 1-6 record and 7.58 ERA at SunTrust when he faces the Cubs. Chicago lefty Jon Lester (5-6, 4.25) hasn't won since June 24.

      WHAT A CARD

St. Louis rookie Magneuris Sierra has a nine-game hitting streak to begin his career. Brought back from Triple-A on Saturday, he got four more hits and stole a base Sunday at Pittsburgh. The speedy 21-year-old outfielder will try to extend his fast start when the Cardinals visit the New York Mets.

      WANT HIM?

Infielder Danny Espinosa is available after being designated for assignment by the Angels. The 30-year-old hit 24 home runs for Washington last season and was traded in the winter to Los Angeles, but batted just .162 with six homers and 29 RBIs in 77 games for his new team.

              • Monday's Diamond Notes
                July 17, 2017

Hottest team: Mariners (4-0 past four overall, 6-1 past seven road games)

The Mariners find themselves 16 1/2 games behind the Astros for second place in the American League West, but this is still an important series for them. They cannot afford to lose ground to the likes of the Angels and Rangers in their division, as well as the Twins, Rays and Royals, for their chance at a wild card. The Mariners have rolled to four straight wins, including three in a row at Chicago White Sox, pulling even in the run differential department. They're trending in the right direction, but that could all potentially fall apart in Houston. The M's are just 2-5 over their past seven against teams with a winning record, although they're 5-2 in Ariel Miranda's past seven road outings and 9-4 in his past 13 against teams with a winning overall mark. Seattle might also have a difficult time against Lance McCullers Jr., as he is 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA overall this season, posting 106 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings. That includes in his most recent meeting with the M's on June 24 at Safeco Field.

Coldest team: Indians (0-4 past four games overall)

The Indians have stumbled out of the gate in the second half, as they were swept by the Athletics in Oakland by a combined score of 17-6. That includes a loss by All-Star Corey Kluber and fireballer Carlos Carrasco, so things aren't exactly trending in the right direction at the moment for the defending American League champions. However, the lack of travel for their next interleague series, a quick jaunt across the Oakland Bay Bridge, should help them feel better and a little rested. They are just 2-10 over their past 12 games against the National League West and 3-14 in the past 17 interleague battles. They're also a dismal 1-7 across their past eight interleague road outings.

Hottest pitcher: Marcus Stroman, Blue Jays (9-5, 3.28 ERA)

Stroman takes the hill Monday night in Fenway Park against the Red Sox in an important series. The Blue Jays are in the basement ofthe American League East, but they're just nine games back of first place. If they're able to make some noise, they might just be buyers and not sellers at the non-waiver trade deadline. Stroman looked great in his last outing against the Astros on July 8, allowing just one run and six hits with three walks and six strikeouts over seven innings to win his ninth game. He will be well rested and ready to go. That's good, too, because he was rocked in his first appearance against the Red Sox back on April 18. He gave up six earned runs and 11 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a loss.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (3-9, 6.04 ERA)

The Giants send the left-hander Moore to the hill on Monday to face the ice-cold Indians. Perhaps that will get him untracked, or perhaps facing Moore is the elixir to cure Cleveland's offensive ills. He has served up 15 home runs over 98 1/3 innings across 18 starts this season and the opposition is hitting a robust .307 against him while he has an unsavory 1.69 WHIP overall. Moore has been a little more respectable at home, posting a 2-5 record with a 4.44 ERA over 48 2/3 innings across eight home outings. However, he is a dismal 1-6 with an 8.39 ERA in 10 starts under the lights this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (5-1 past six, 13-2-1 past 16 overall)

The Pirates have been a total bettors' dream lately, as the 'under' has been nearly automatic for them lately. The under is 4-0-1 in their past five at home against left-handed starting pitchers, 16-5-2 in their past 23 at home and 22-6-2 over the past 30 games overall. In addition, the Bucs have started out slowly in series openers, posting a 6-1 under mark in their past seven Game 1s. The Brewers have been on an under tear lately, too, going 4-1 in their past five and 5-2-1 in their past eight on the road vs. RHP. In addition, Brent Suter has fit right in, with the under going 4-0 over his past four assignments. In addition, the under is 15-4-2 over the past 21 meetings in this series.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (7-3 past 10 overall)

'Over' and Oakland are two things that generally do not come to mind immediately, but the Athletics have been doing a good job hitting the over lately. They averaged 6.0 runs per game over their final two outings against the Indians to hit the over, and it has hit in seven of the past 10 overall. The over is also 5-1 in Oakland's past six at home, and 6-1 in their past seven at O.co Coliseum against American League clubs. They'll be facing a Rays squad which has posted an 8-3-2 mark against the under over the past 13 road outings. However, Tampa Bay has a perfect 7-0 'over' mark in Jake Odorizzi's past seven outings, including 4-1 in his past five road assignments.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Padres

The Rockies host the Padres, looking to get back on track after an ice-cold stretch lately. Colorado has won just six times over their past 21 games overall, and they're 1-10 in their past 11 divisional games. However, the Rockies are 4-0 in German Marquez's past four home starts, and 8-3 in his past 11 overall. The Rox are also an impressive 11-5 over their past 16 home games and 21-9 in their past 30 to kick off a new series. Conversely, the Padres have won just once over the past six road assignments for Luis Perdomo, and they're 0-4 in his past four inside the division. San Diego is also 2-6 in their past eight trips to Coors Field with the 'under' cashing in each of the past five.

Betcha didn’t know: The biggest reason for the failures of the Tigers this season has been their inability to win inside the divsion, as well as on the road. Detroit is just 2-8 over their past 10 road outings and 1-4 in their past five road games against teams with a winning home mark. Jordan Zimmermann hasn't been much help in turning those kind of numbers around, as the Tigers are just 1-5 over his past six outings, 1-9 in his past 10 road starts and 2-7 across his past nine assignments against divisional foes. On the flip side, the Royals are an impressive 11-1 over Jason Vargas' past 12 starts against a club with a losing record and 21-6 across his past 27 outings overall.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-215) vs. Mariners

Biggest public underdog: Rays (+110) at Athletics

Biggest line move: Astros (-200 to -215) vs. Mariners

                • Mets could be sellers at trade deadline
                  July 17, 2017

When the season began, the New York Mets thought they'd be fighting for first place this time of year. Instead, they could be one of baseball's busiest sellers before the July 31 trade deadline.

Surprisingly poor pitching and another string of injuries to top players have put the underperforming Mets (41-48) in an unexpected position: Coming off consecutive playoff appearances, they are 9 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. Shipping off veterans like Jay Bruce and Addison Reed to legitimate contenders might be the only way they impact the pennant race.

''You can't just throw up the white flag and say the season's over. We can catch up, we can get back in the hunt and that's our plan. But we've got to go play well,'' manager Terry Collins said Sunday before a 13-4 loss to Colorado. ''I don't think for any stretch of the imagination that this is over yet.''

Two days earlier, as the Mets came out of the All-Star break, general manager Sandy Alderson acknowledged ''things would have to go exceedingly well'' during a 10-game homestand for the club to ''change direction.''

That sounds like a realistic front office resigned to procuring what it can for several pending free agents.

So while the rebuilding Chicago White Sox (Jose Quintana) and budget-minded Oakland Athletics (Ryan Madson, Sean Doolittle) have already cashed in assets, the Mets might not be far behind.

Need a dangerous bat in the outfield with postseason experience? Bruce and Curtis Granderson fit the bill.

A quality reliever who can set up or close? Reed should draw plenty of interest.

A first baseman with power and a discerning eye at the plate? Lucas Duda.

All of them, in addition to injured second baseman Neil Walker, make sizable salaries and are eligible for free agency following the World Series.

Then there's switch-hitting infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, who requested a trade (but then backed off) after getting shifted from shortstop to second base recently. His contract includes an $8.5 million club option next year with a $2 million buyout.

None of those players is likely to fetch a huge return by himself, but if the Mets move more than one it could collectively benefit the future of a team that plans to be back in the race next season. To accomplish that, New York will need to rebuild a thin bullpen and fill several slots in the everyday lineup. And if nothing else, this year has showed the Mets are in dire need of depth and live arms at the upper levels of their farm system.

New York took two of three over the weekend from the skidding Rockies, who lead the chase for the second NL wild card. On deck, a four-game series against St. Louis - another team ahead of the Mets.

If things don't go ''exceedingly well'' at Citi Field, major changes could be coming soon.

A few other developments around baseball:

                  DODGERS DOMINATE

Justin Turner is batting .374, Alex Wood is 11-0 and Los Angeles (64-29) has won nine straight and 29 of 33 to build the best record in the big leagues heading into a two-game interleague series at the last-place White Sox beginning Tuesday night. The Dodgers completed a three-game sweep in Miami over the weekend and opened a 10 1/2-game lead in the NL West. They are 35 games above .500 for the first time since 1977 and have the franchise's best record through 93 games since 1955.

                  DAZZLING DEBUT

Quintana struck out a season-high 12 over seven sharp innings in his first game for the Chicago Cubs, who finished a three-game sweep at Baltimore with an 8-0 victory Sunday. The defending World Series champions hit 10 homers during the series and climbed over .500 for the first time since June 29. Are they finally poised to make their move?

                  WELCOME BACK

Cleveland manager Terry Francona returned to the bench, only to see his team get swept in three games at last-place Oakland. Francona missed six games when he underwent a procedure for an irregular heartbeat. He had also been scheduled to manage the American League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game victory, but had to skip it. The Indians have lost four straight for the first time since 2015, and their AL Central lead was shaved to 1+ games over Minnesota. Next up, the defending AL champs head across the San Francisco Bay for a three-game series against the struggling Giants.

                  RIVALRY RENEWED

Stingy pitching was on display as the AL East-leading Red Sox split a compelling and tiring four-game series with the Yankees. Boston outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. went over the bullpen wall in the triangle at Fenway Park to steal a home run from major league leader Aaron Judge. New York was shut out for the first time all season but also won consecutive games for the first time since a six-game spurt from June 7-12. Red Sox batters are 3 for 58 with runners in scoring position against the Yankees this season. Meanwhile, it seems nobody has noticed, but the surprising Rays have moved just ahead of New York into second place in the division, three games behind Boston.

                  OUTSIDE THE PARK

Rockies leadoff man Charlie Blackmon hustled around the bases for an inside-the-park home run Sunday - even though replays showed his drive actually cleared the fence before caroming back onto the field. Blackmon became the first player with two inside-the-park homers in one season since Colorado's Brandon Barnes in 2014.

                  LINE OF THE WEEK

Cody Bellinger became the first Dodgers rookie to hit for the cycle Saturday in a 7-1 win over the Marlins. Bellinger singled in the first inning, launched a two-run homer in the third, added an RBI double in the fourth and hit his second career triple on the first pitch of the seventh. ''In this organization there is so much history,'' he said. ''To see my name on some of that is pretty humbling.''

                      July 17, 2017

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton slugged two homers, and Dee Gordon hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to lead the Miami Marlins to a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

With one out in the 10th, Derek Dietrich tripled off Phillies reliever Mark Leiter Jr. (1-2). After two intentional walks loaded the bases, pinch hitter A.J. Ellis grounded to shortstop, and Philadelphia got a force play at the plate. Gordon then singled to right-center to win the game.

Marlins reliever Drew Steckenrider (1-1) pitched one scoreless inning for his first major league victory.

                      Mariners 9, Astros 7 (10th inning)

HOUSTON -- Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia clubbed back-to-back home runs in the 10th inning as Seattle completed a wild win over Houston.

Seager, who hit his 13th homer, and Valencia, who smacked his 11th, completed a four-homer night for the Mariners by going deep off Astros left-hander Tony Sipp (0-1).

                        ************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                        13) Carolina Panthers fired their GM Monday, 8 days before training camp opens. Panthers had a 40-23-1 record while Dave Gettleman was the GM, playing in the Super Bowl two years ago.

Former Panthers Steve Smith/DeAngelo Williams openly gloated about the firing on Twitter. Gettleman was (obviously) not well-liked by the players on the Panthers.

Must be an interesting story behind all this, then again, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson also fired his two sons when they worked for the Panthers.

                        12) Kansas City Chiefs fired their GM last month; also odd timing. You would think this is a down time for NFL teams, just before camp starts, yet two teams canned their GMs. Go figure.

                        11) Houston Rockets’ owner Leslie Alexander put the team up for sale Monday; he’s owned the Rockets for 24 years. No one saw this coming, not even people who work for the team.

Rockets just traded for Chris Paul, gave James Harden a huge contract extension- they’re the most popular NBA team in Asia (because of Yao Ming) so that inflates the value of the franchise a decent amount. Last thing I saw had them ranked the 7th-most valuable NBA franchise.

                        10) Red Sox have been shut out eight times this year; five of the eight games were Rick Porcello starts. Boston-Royals-Angels-Giants have all been shut out eight times, most in MLB this year.

                        9) As of late Sunday night, Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas had taken 56 bets on whether or not the Lakers will make the playoffs this coming season. All 56 bets were “yes”.

                        8) Nationals 6, Reds 1— Washington sweeps 4-game series; they had a 5-0 lead in all four games. Daniel Murphy scored from 2nd on a sac fly in this game- the RF made a lunging catch in right-center, fell down, and Murphy kept going. Rough weekend for Cincinnati.

                        7) Milwaukee Bucks’ prospect Thon Maker fouled out of a 40:00 summer league game, when the foul limit was 10 per player. Thats not easy to do.

                        6) Mets’ TV analyst Keith Hernandez made a cryptic comment during Sunday’s game. His partner Gary Cohen was talking about manager Terry Collins, and Hernandez chimed in, “Terry has a lot more to deal with than the fans know about.” Wonder what he meant?

                        5) Golden State Warriors’ over/under win total for next season: 66.5.

                        4) Redskins’ QB Kirk Cousins will play under the franchise tag again this year, will try to get by on his $23.94M salary and likely will be playing elsewhere (SF?) in 2018.

                        3) Indiana’s new basketball coach Archie Miller signed three top 100 recruits over the weekend, and kept the three recruits Tom Crean had coming in to Bloomington this fall. Miller is a very good coach.

                        2) Texas Rangers were 36-11 in one-run games last year, finished 95-67, won the AL West by nine games……..this year, the Rangers are 7-15 in one-run games, are 45-46, 16.5 games behind the first-place Astros. Little things make a big difference.

                        1) Roger Federer banked $2,880,240 for winning Wimbledon; his on-court winnings in his great career have now grown to $107,325,425. That is before endorsements.

By way of comparison, Dwight Howard has earned just around $190,000,000 in salary in his career.

                        • MLB notebook: Pineda to undergo Tommy John surgery
                          July 17, 2017

New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda will undergo Tommy John surgery after getting a second opinion for a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the team announced Monday.

Pineda had the UCL injury in his right elbow examined by the Cincinnati Reds medical director, Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who agreed with the original recommendation of Tommy John surgery from the Yankees head team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

The 28-year-old Pineda is scheduled to undergo the surgery on Tuesday in Cincinnati, to be performed by Dr. Kremchek.

Pineda's last start was July 5 when he gave up nine hits, including three homers, and five runs in three innings against the Toronto Blue Jays.

--The Washington Nationals called up right-hander Jacob Turner from Triple-A Syracuse.

Turner, 26, returns to the Nationals for his second major league assignment of the season. He went 2-3 with a 5.08 ERA in 39 innings in 18 games (two starts) during his first stint with Washington.

Turner reported to Triple-A after being outrighted on July 3 and went 0-1 with an 11.74 ERA in two starts.

The Nationals also transferred right-hander Koda Glover to the 60-day disabled list.

--The Boston Red Sox activated left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his start against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

Rodriguez, 24, returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day disabled list on June 2 with a right knee subluxation. He made one rehab start with Double-A Portland and two with Pawtucket, most recently allowing only one run with seven strikeouts and no walks in 6 1/3 innings on July 9 against Buffalo.

Rodriguez has made 10 starts for Boston this season, going 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 61 innings while striking out 65 and limiting opposing hitters to a .222 batting average. He compiled a career-long four-game winning streak in seven starts from April 23 to May 26, compiling a 2.25 ERA.

                          • LEADING OFF: Kershaw, Dodgers roll, Colon makes Twins debut
                            July 17, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

                            DAZZLING DODGERS

Clayton Kershaw pitches for the first time since the All-Star break, trying extend a couple of big winning streaks for the Dodgers. LA has the best record in the big leagues and will go for its 10th straight victory when it visits the Chicago White Sox. Kershaw tops the majors with a 14-2 record - the NL West leaders have won the lefty's last 13 starts. Kershaw has never faced the White Sox on the road.

                            WELCOME BACK

Bartolo Colon makes his debut with Minnesota, joining his 10th major league team. He'll start for the contending Twins against the Yankees at Target Field.

The burly 44-year-old was released two weeks ago by Atlanta after 13 starts and an unsightly 8.14 ERA. He had a rocky start last week with Triple-A Rochester, giving up four runs in 3 2/3 innings, but the Twins have struggled badly to fill the fifth spot in the rotation. Colon will be the 11th pitcher to start a game for them this season. He made his big league debut in 1997, when 60-year-old Twins manager Paul Molitor was still playing.

                            MARTE RETURNS

Outfielder Starling Marte rejoins the Pirates after serving an 80-game suspension. A two-time Gold Glove winner in left field, he returns to play vs. Milwaukee at PNC Park. Marte began the year in center field - without him, Andrew McCutchen moved back to his original spot. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle intends to keep McCutchen in center.

                            NEW NATS

Relievers Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle join the Nationals in Los Angeles for the start of a series against the Angels. The NL East leaders acquired the duo from Oakland on Sunday. They'll try to shore up a bullpen that's been Washington's weak spot. The Nationals are coming off a four-game sweep of the Reds in Cincinnati.

                            CUT SHORT

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda is set to have Tommy John surgery, likely putting him out of action until at least late next year. The 28-year-old righty is 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA in 17 starts. He is eligible for free agency after this season.
