  • LEADING OFF: Sale faces Santana, Mets' Cabrera gets MRI
    May 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

    MARQUEE MATCHUP

Two of the top pitchers in the American League this season square off when Chris Sale (2-2, 1.38 ERA) and the Boston Red Sox face Ervin Santana (5-0, 0.66) and the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. Sale has 63 strikeouts and eight walks while allowing only 26 hits in 45 2/3 innings. Santana has been even more stingy, giving up just 16 hits in 41 innings.

    NOT AGAIN

Already missing a string of key players due to injuries, the New York Mets hope for good news when steady shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has an MRI. Cabrera hurt his left thumb trying to make a diving stop Saturday night against Miami. The team said X-rays were negative. New York is also without ace pitcher Noah Syndergaard (lat muscle), outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring), first baseman Lucas Duda (elbow), catcher Travis d'Arnaud (wrist), left-hander Steven Matz (elbow) and right-hander Seth Lugo (elbow).

    HEY OLD FRIEND

Jon Lester gets the ball for the Cubs when the World Series champions close out a weekend series against the Yankees at Wrigley Field. Lester is making his 30th start against New York, matching teammate John Lackey for the most starts by an active NL pitcher against the club. The left-hander, who began his career with Boston, is 13-6 with a 3.78 ERA against New York. Luis Severino starts for the Yankees after he was charged with five runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss to Toronto in his previous start Monday.

    BUM WING

Baltimore will lean on Brad Brach as closer for a bit longer after Zach Britton was put back on the disabled list Saturday. Britton said he probably rushed his return from a left forearm strain, earning himself a second DL stint this season. Brach was solid as a fill-in the first time Britton went down and entered Saturday with six saves and a 2.12 ERA this season. In better news for the Orioles, Chris Tillman is set to make his first start this season after battling right shoulder bursitis. He'll face White Sox lefty Jose Quintana (2-4, 4.10 ERA), who pitched eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball against Kansas City on Tuesday.

    TAKING IT EASY

Braves manager Brian Snitker gave Dansby Swanson a night off Saturday, hoping that a short rest can get the 23-year-old on track. Swanson, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2015, entered Saturday hitting .150 with two homers and six RBIs in 100 at-bats. He was 1 for 10 in the first four games of this homestand. Swanson batted .302 in 38 games last season.

      • Mets suspend RHP Harvey three days for violating team rules
        May 7, 2017

The New York Mets suspended right-hander Matt Harvey three games without pay for violating team rules.

General manager Sandy Alderson announced the team's decision at a press conference Sunday morning but did not reveal details of Harvey's infraction.

Manager Terry Collins also would not discuss what triggered Harvey's suspension.

"We'll keep it in-house, the way it's supposed to be," Collins told reporters Sunday.

"There's things with this job that certainly are internal that the public can't see, and how hard it is, and this one's a tough one. So we hope to put it behind us and move forward."

Harvey was scheduled to start Sunday afternoon's home game at Citi Field against the Miami Marlins.

The Mets recalled Adam Wilk from Triple-A Las Vegas to start in Harvey's place.

The 28-year-old Harvey is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA over 35 innings in six starts this season. He came back from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome that ended his season in 2016 when he made only 17 starts, going 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA.

NEW YORK (AP) Shortly after scheduled starter Matt Harvey was suspended by the New York Mets, Giancarlo Stanton hit two more monstrous home runs off fill-in Adam Wilk that led the Miami Marlins to a 7-0 victory Sunday.

Harvey was suspended three days without pay for an undisclosed violation of team rules. General manager Sandy Alderson announced the punishment in a brief statement before the game.

Making his first start of the year while Edinson Volquez recovers from a blister problem, Jose Urena (1-0) and three relievers combined on a one-hitter as the Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak and handed the Mets their first shutout this season. Rene Rivera led off the sixth inning with a clean single against Urena.

Wilk (0-1) was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas on short notice to make his first major league appearance since 2015. The journeyman left-hander was no match for Stanton, whose 20 home runs at Citi Field are the most at any visiting ballpark by a player since 2011.

Adeiny Hechavarria also homered for the Marlins.

            RED SOX 17, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Sandy Leon hit a pair of two-run homers, Chris Sale struck out 10 and Boston romped out of town with a big victory over Minnesota fueled by a season-high five homers and finished with a 10-run ninth inning.

Sale (3-2) reached double-digit strikeouts for the sixth straight time, stretching his major league-leading total to 73.

The lanky left-hander briefly lost the lead in a four-run fifth while the Twins batted around, but Leon broke the tie in the sixth with a two-out homer off Minnesota ace Ervin Santana (5-1).

Dustin Pedroia, Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts also homered for the Red Sox, who set a season high in runs for the second straight game. Mitch Moreland had four RBIs.

            INDIANS 1, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Clevinger and four relievers combined on a one-hitter as Cleveland edged Kansas City.

Carlos Santana had three hits, including an RBI single in the fifth that followed Yan Gomes' double.

Clevinger (1-0), making his first start in place of injured ace Corey Kluber, gave up a one-out double to Salvador Perez in the fourth. Clevinger walked four and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings.

Bryan Shaw struck out all four batters he faced. Andrew Miller pitched a perfect eighth, keeping his ERA at 0.00 over 15 2/3 innings this season, and Cody Allen got three outs for his ninth save in nine chances. He retired Brandon Moss with two runners on to end it.

Danny Duffy (2-3), who had given up 12 runs and 19 hits over 9 2/3 innings in losing his previous two starts, held the Indians to one run over 6 2/3 innings.

            ORIOLES 4, WHITE SOX 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Tillman pitched five sharp innings in his season debut and Baltimore beat Chicago to complete a three-game sweep.

Trey Mancini had three hits and drove in a run for the Orioles, who took an early 4-0 lead against Jose Quintana (2-5) and coasted to their fourth straight victory.

Sidelined since March with right shoulder bursitis, Tillman came off the disabled list to join an unstable rotation in need of another arm. After walking the first two batters and working out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, Tillman (1-0) bounced back nicely in his first appearance since the 2016 AL wild-card game.

Brad Brach got two outs for his seventh save.

Baltimore finished its first three-game home sweep of the White Sox in 18 years and improved to 20-10 for the first time since 2005.

            BREWERS 6, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Eric Thames broke out of his slump with a home run and three hits to send Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.

Travis Shaw and Jesus Aguilar also went deep for the Brewers. Thames connected for a solo shot in the ninth inning off Johnny Barbato, his first homer in 10 games after hitting 11 in his first 20 games. Thames had gone 4 for 27 in his last seven games.

Zach Davies (3-2) won his third straight decision as the Brewers avoided being swept in the three-game series. He allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

Tyler Glasnow (1-2) pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings but took the loss. Fellow rookie Jose Osuna hit a two-run homer for the Pirates.

            BLUE JAYS 2, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Joe Biagini and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, Darwin Barney hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and Toronto topped Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays took two of three from the Rays to win a road series for the first time this season (1-4-1). It also was just the fifth time in 31 tries since 2007 that Toronto won a series at Tropicana Field (5-23-3).

Biagini allowed an unearned run, two hits and struck out four over four innings in his first major league start. The right-hander was inserted into the Toronto rotation after 74 career relief appearances due to injuries to Aaron Sanchez and J.A. Happ, and Mat Latos being designated for assignment.

Aaron Loup, Ryan Tepera (2-1), Joe Smith and Roberto Osuna combined to hold Tampa Bay to one hit over five innings. Osuna earned his fourth save.

Barney put the Blue Jays up 2-1 with his first homer of the year. He connected off Alex Cobb (2-3), who gave up four hits in eight innings.

            CARDINALS 6, BRAVES 4, 14 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Tommy Pham hit two homers, including a two-run drive in the 14th inning, and St. Louis recovered after blowing a four-run lead to complete a three-game sweep of Atlanta.

Pham's long shot in the 14th off Josh Collmenter (0-1) drove in rookie Magneuris Sierra, who reached on second baseman Jace Peterson's fielding error.

Recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Pham had a career-high four hits and drove in three runs.

Freddie Freeman's 11th homer off Brett Cecil in the eighth tied the game, completing the Braves' comeback from a 4-0 deficit.

Matt Carpenter had a first-inning homer for St. Louis. He went deep in all three games during the series.

Sam Tuivailala (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings and Kevin Siegrist got his first save.

            PHILLIES 6, NATIONALS, 5, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give Philadelphia a comeback win over Washington.

Pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr connected for a tying, three-run homer in the eighth and the Phillies rallied to avoid a three-game sweep.

Odubel Herrera led off the bottom of the 10th with a checked-swing double off Blake Treinen (0-1). After Altherr was intentionally walked, pitcher Vince Velasquez batted for reliever Hector Neris and reached on a bunt single. Treinen fanned Andres Blanco, but Galvis drove in the winning run with a liner to center.

Jayson Werth had four hits, including two homers, for the Nationals.

Neris (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Galvis also hit a two-run double in the fourth.

The Nationals (21-10) had won four in a row, while the Phillies (13-17) had lost eight of nine.

            ASTROS 5, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jose Altuve hit a three-run homer during Houston's four-run third inning, and Evan Gattis also went deep against Los Angeles.

Mike Fiers (1-1) pitched five innings and earned his first victory of the season with a boost from the bullpen, which threw four scoreless innings of two-hit ball.

Ken Giles rebounded from a rough blown save in Anaheim on Friday to pitch the ninth for his eighth save, and the AL West leaders won for the sixth time in eight games.

Yunel Escobar hit two home runs for the Angels, who have lost four of five. Two-time AL MVP Mike Trout sat out with a tight left hamstring for the third time in four games.

Matt Shoemaker (1-2) pitched five-hit ball into the seventh, but was undone by the Astros' big inning capped by Altuve's fifth homer.

            REDS 4, GIANTS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Scott Feldman pitched a four-hitter, Scott Schebler and Zack Cozart homered off Johnny Cueto, and Cincinnati beat San Francisco for its season-high fifth straight win.

The Reds took three in a row for their first sweep of the Giants since 2013, outscoring them 31-5 during the series.

Feldman (2-3) was 1-5 in six career starts against the Giants going into the game. He easily handled a slumping lineup, striking out five and walking one while throwing 119 pitches. He got his first shutout since 2014 with Houston.

Cueto (4-2) was the Reds' ace for eight seasons. In two starts against them since being traded in 2015, he has given up 10 runs in 12 innings. He struck out a season-high 10 and allowed six hits over seven innings this time.

            ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2

DENVER (AP) - Tyler Chatwood pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning before exiting after deflecting a comebacker with his pitching hand, and Mark Reynolds homered for a third straight game in Colorado's rain-delayed victory over Arizona.

Pat Valaika lined a two-run homer and Charlie Blackmon added a solo shot into the second deck as the NL West leaders took two of three from the Diamondbacks.

Chatwood (3-4) was cruising until he tried to corral Daniel Descalso's infield hit to start the eighth. Greg Holland pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save in as many chances.

Taijuan Walker (3-2) gave up three runs - one earned - in 5 2/3 innings.

            ATHLETICS 8, TIGERS 6

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ryon Healy hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run ninth inning against Francisco Rodriguez, and Oakland rallied for the second straight day to beat Detroit.

Rajai Davis drew a leadoff walk from Rodriguez (1-4), and Jed Lowrie lined a tying double. One out later, Healy hit a towering home run.

Healy's game-ending heroics came less than 24 hours after Adam Rosales hit a two-out, two-run single off Rodriguez in the ninth inning to beat the Tigers.

Yonder Alonso homered for the fifth time in six games for Oakland. It was Alonso's ninth home run this season, tying his career high set in 155 games in 2012.

Santiago Casilla (1-1) retired three batters for the win.

James McCann put the Tigers ahead with a two-run homer in the sixth.

            MARINERS 4, RANGERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Kyle Seager hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and Seattle rallied late to defeat Texas.

Down 3-0, the Mariners scored three times in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Danny Valencia tied it with a two-run single.

Seager connected in the eighth off Sam Dyson (0-4) for his second homer of the season.

Marc Rzepczynski (1-0) got one out for the win. Edwin Diaz worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

              ****************************

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

              13) Rough times for the Mets; Matz/Syndergaard are injured pitchers, Cespedes is on the DL and now struggling pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended for three days, for what sounds like an accumulation of actions, dating back to last year.

Harvey was sent home Sunday after he didn’t show up Saturday; Mets started Adam Wilk, a non-roster pitcher who has a 5.69 ERA in AAA- he got pounded by Miami. Tough times for Terry Collins, in the final year of his contract as manager.

              12) Watching Wilk pitch to Giancarlo Stanton, you wonder if Stanton would want to hire Wilk as his pitcher for Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in July, in Miami.

              11) ESPN had the Bronx Bombers on last nite, has them on again at home next week against Houston, their 3rd Sunday nite game in five weeks. Five of their first seven Sunday night telecasts will be from NYC or Boston. Awesome.

              10) Wizards 121, Celtics 102- Washington had a 26-0 run in third quarter; why do they play so much better at home than on the road?

              9) Seattle Mariners have already used 20 pitchers this season; that’s hard to believe. They lost two pitchers to injury in a 3-pitch stretch in extra innings Friday night.

              8) Bad teams are also often unlucky teams; Brandon McCarthy tweaked his back or something lifting weights, so his start was changed from Saturday to Sunday and Clayton Kershaw was moved up to pitch Saturday against the Padres.

Just San Diego’s luck; they get rained out at home Sunday for only the third time in Petco Park history, meaning that they would’ve missed facing Kershaw had McCarthy not gotten hurt.

              7) A’s 8, Tigers 6—Before Saturday, Oakland was only MLB team that hadn’t won a game where the GW run scored after the 6th inning- then they had walk-off wins both Saturday/Sunday, making my house a happier place.

Yonder Alonso has been a big leaguer for 8 years; his career high in homers is 9, in 2012 with San Diego. Alonso hit his 9th homer this year on Sunday- May 7. He’s been a very good player in his 1+ seasons in Oakland.

              6) John Daly won on the Senior Tour Sunday, his first tournament win in 13 years. Someone should make a movie on his life—I’m guessing it would be entertaining. I’m also guessing his travelling party had a lot of fun last night.

              5) I find this surprising: Leonardo DiCaprio’s character died in nine of his first 36 movies.

              4) Edmonton led Anaheim 5-0 after the first period Sunday, coasted to an easy 7-1 Game 6 win. Not a stellar effort by the Ducks; very few NHL games are ever 5-0 in the first period.

              3) Bryce Harper, Mike Trout both have minor leg injuries; Harper didn’t play all weekend. Trout missed three of the Angels’ last four games.

              2) Rockets 125, Spurs 104—Not lot of fun games to watch in these playoffs. At least this series is 2-2, like Celtics-Wizards. Just no close games.

              1) San Francisco Giants were outscored 31-5 in three games against the (first place) Reds this weekend, then their team bus broke down on the way to the airport Sunday. At 11-21, been a rough spring for Bruce Bochy’s ballclub.

                        • LEADING OFF: Ailing Trout, Harper expected back in lineup
                          May 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          TROUT OK?

Two-time AL MVP Mike Trout says he plans to play at Oakland after missing two straight games for the Angels and three of four because of a tight left hamstring. He has a 17-game hitting streak. The outfielder has played in at least 157 games in four consecutive seasons, and he missed only three games in each of the past two years.

                          BRYCE BACK?

Washington star Bryce Harper has been out of the lineup for three straight games because of a strained groin. Manager Dusty Baker says the 2015 NL MVP will play in the series opener at Baltimore. Harper is hitting .376 with 27 RBIs. The Orioles will also get a look at Matt Wieters, their longtime catcher who joined the Nationals during spring training.

                          BE NICE

Reds righty Rookie Davis will be facing a friend when Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees open a two-game series in Cincinnati. Davis got to know Judge in the Yankees' minor league system. Davis went to the Reds as part of the trade for closer Aroldis Chapman after the 2015 season.

Davis says they text often. After Judge's recent multihomer game, he messaged him: ''You can stop it now. We get it.''

The Reds have won five in a row, and so have the Yankees, who outlasted the Chicago Cubs 5-4 in 18 innings Sunday night at Wrigley Field - the longest interleague game ever by innings.

                          LET'S SEE

National League rookie of the month and burgeoning Colorado Rockies ace Antonio Senzatela (4-1) will test out his fastball against NL MVP Kris Bryant when the weary Cubs come to Coors Field.

                          MAYBE

Austin Bibens-Dirkx could finally get his chance to pitch in the majors when the Rangers visit San Diego. The 32-year-old righty was promoted from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday after 12 seasons in the minors. Bibens-Dirkx spent time in an independent league last year, and has played for 20 different teams during stints with six big league organizations.

                          • MLB notebook: Mets suspend RHP Harvey 3 days
                            May 7, 2017

A bizarre season for the New York Mets took another hairpin turn Sunday morning when the team announced it had suspended right-hander Matt Harvey three days without pay for a violation of team rules.

Harvey originally was scheduled to start the series finale against the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon. Neither general manager Sandy Alderson nor manager Terry Collins identified the violation. Alderson said Harvey, whose suspension began Saturday, was sent home.

"There's things with this job that certainly are internal, that the public can't see and (understand) how hard it is," Collins told reporters. "And this one's a tough one. We hope to put it behind us and move forward."

Left-hander Adam Wilk was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Harvey's roster and rotation spot. Harvey was 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 14 starts last season before undergoing surgery to repair thoracic outlet syndrome. He is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA in six starts this season.

--The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Jose Martinez on the 10-day disabled list due to a left groin injury.

Martinez, 28, sustained the injury while trying to beat out a grounder in Saturday night's 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves. He is hitting .313 with a home run and four RBIs in 20 games, ranking among National League rookie leaders in batting average.

The Cardinals recalled outfielder Magneuris Sierra from Class A Palm Beach. He joined the team for the Sunday afternoon game in Atlanta.

--Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Junior Guerra (right calf strain) threw a simulated game to live hitters with the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday.

Guerra threw two innings and will remain in Wisconsin while preparing for a rehab start.

--Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop was out for the second straight game after being hit on the right wrist with a pitch on Friday night.

"I'm hoping he's back (Monday), but he's still got some soreness there. Swelling is managing better," manager Buck Showalter said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Always Dreaming splashed through the slop to win the Kentucky Derby by 2 } lengths, giving trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez their second victories in the race but their first together.

Pletcher and Velazquez have teamed up often over the years and are the sport's leading money winners. On their own, they were a combined 2 for 63 coming into America's greatest race. Together, they were unbeatable on a cool and rainy Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Sent off at 9-2 odds, Always Dreaming made it the fifth straight year that a Derby favorite has won, the longest such stretch since the 1970s.

Always Dreaming was followed across the finish line Saturday by a pair of longshots: 33-1 Lookin At Lee and 40-1 Battle of Midway. Always Dreaming ran 1 \\ miles in 2:03.59 and paid $11.40, $7.20 and $5.80.

NEW YORK (AP) Mets star pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended three days without pay by the team on Sunday for an undisclosed violation of team rules, the latest hiccup for a club beset by problems on and off the field this season.

General manager Sandy Alderson announced the suspension in a brief statement before the game, shortly before Harvey was scheduled to start against Miami. Alderson said the right-hander had been sent home, but declined further comment.

Left-hander Adam Wilk was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to face the Marlins. In his first big league game since 2015, the lefty was hit hard, giving up six runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. New York managed only one hit in a 7-0 loss and was shut out for the first time this season.

The Mets said Harvey's suspension took effect Saturday. Manager Terry Collins held a closed-door meeting with his team before Sunday's game to talk about the penalty.

                              WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP)
                              - Brian Harman made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday to win the Wells Fargo Championship and deny Dustin Johnson the chance at a fourth straight victory.

Johnson, in his return from a freak back injury that knocked the world's No. 1 player out of the Masters, went from making the cut on the number to a 67-67 weekend at Eagle Point and appeared headed for a playoff with Harman and Pat Perez.

Harman won it with a birdie-birdie finish, none bigger than the par-5 18th.

After going so long on his second shot that he needed relief from behind a corporate tent, Harman hit a heavy chip that barely got onto the green. From just under 30 feet away, the putt dropped into the center of the cup and set off a wild celebration, with Harman repeatedly shaking his fists and leaping to share a hard hug with his caddie, Scott Tway.

Harman closed with a 4-under 68 for his second PGA Tour victory.

                              - Sei Young Kim held off Ariya Jutanugarn 1 up on Sunday to win the Lorena Ochoa Match Play for her sixth LPGA Tour title.

After Jutanugarn won the par-5 17th with a birdie to force another hole, Kim finished off the match with a halve for a par on the par-4 18th.

In the morning semifinals at Club de Golf Mexico, Kim beat Mi Jung Hur 5 and 4, and the third-ranked Jutanugarn topped Michelle Wie 4 and 3. Hur won the third-place match, overcoming a five-hole deficit to beat Wie in 22 holes.

Kim also beat Maude-Aimee Leblanc (3 and 1), Danielle Kang (3 and 2), Charley Hull (3 and 1) and Karine Icher (5 and 4) in the event that switched from stroke to match play and moved from November. The 24-year-old South Korean player is projected to jump from 12th to eighth in the world ranking.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) - John Daly held on to win the Insperity Invitational on Sunday for his first PGA Tour Champions title.

Daly bogeyed the final three holes for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke victory over Kenny Perry and Tommy Armour III. The 51-year-old Daly won for the first time since the PGA Tour's 2004 Buick Invitational. He finished at 14-under 202 at The Woodlands.

Daly pumped his fist after tapping in for bogey on 18, then was sprayed with champagne by friends, led by fellow player Esteban Toledo.

                              Perry shot a 69, and Armour had a 67.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Ricky Stenhouse Jr. used a strong Ford engine to blow past Kyle Busch in overtime at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday for his first NASCAR Cup victory.

It was the first victory for Roush Fenway Racing since Carl Edwards at Sonoma in 2014.

Stenhouse, who has led a resurgent Roush team, won in his 158th Cup start. He started from the pole, praised the power from his Doug Yates-built engine for the speed, then used it to snatch the race away with a last-lap pass of Busch.

Jamie McMurray finished second in a Chevrolet and was followed by Busch in a Toyota, then Aric Almirola, another Ford driver.

                              TENNIS

MADRID (AP) - Maria Sharapova recovered from a shaky opening to defeat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday, getting off to a good start in her second tournament since returning from a doping ban.

Sharapova took control of the match after struggling early against the 20th-ranked Lucic-Baroni, cruising to victory in the final set after more than two hours on the center court in Madrid.

Sharapova had 16 winners and only 10 unforced errors in her opening-round victory, her fourth since a controversial return to tennis.

The Russian was broken three times in the first set, but only once the rest of the match at the clay-court tournament. She had a total of 19 break opportunities, converting seven of them.

                              BOBSLEDDING

Steven Holcomb, the longtime U.S. bobsledding star who drove to three Olympic medals after beating a disease that nearly robbed him of his eyesight, was found dead in Lake Placid, New York, on Saturday. He was 37.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Bobsled and Skeleton announced his death, the cause of which remains unclear.

An autopsy performed at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, New York, showed that Holcomb died with fluid in his lungs, Essex County coroner Francis Whitelaw said Sunday. However, that alone was not enough to draw a conclusion as to why Holcomb died - and no determination will come until toxicology tests are completed. That process can typically take several weeks.

The native of Park City, Utah, was a three-time Olympian, and his signature moment came at the 2010 Vancouver Games when he piloted his four-man sled to a win that snapped a 62-year drought for the U.S. in bobsled's signature race.
