      • LEADING OFF: Lindor's extra-base streak, Keuchel's next try
        September 16, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

        EXTRA! EXTRA!

One historic streak ended Friday for the Indians, but Francisco Lindor may have another in the works. Cleveland's shortstop has gotten an extra-base hit in nine straight games, extending his string with a leadoff double in the first inning as the Indians ended their winning run at 22 games. Lindor still has a long way to go to the major league record - Chipper Jones (2006) and Hall of Famer Paul Waner (1927) each got an extra-base hit in 14 games in a row.

        OCTOBER READY?

Dallas Keuchel looks to bounce back from a lousy start at Oakland last weekend when the Astros try to clinch the AL West in a game against Seattle. Keuchel walked in two runs and forced home another with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch during a 10-2 loss against the A's, lifting his ERA to 4.78 over eight starts since the beginning of August. Houston would like to get its ace left-hander on track before the playoffs begin - the Astros can ensure themselves a spot with a victory and a loss by the Angels.

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell hopes to return this weekend after being sidelined since Aug. 2 because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He's ready to work out before the NL Central leaders play St. Louis at Wrigley Field. Russell is hitting .241 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. Last year, he hit 21 homers and drove in 95 runs.

Mets star Noah Syndergaard will be evaluated after throwing a bullpen session earlier in the week. The 2016 All-Star hasn't pitched since suffering a torn lat muscle on April 30. Syndergaard was 1-2 with a 3.29 ERA before getting hurt. Manager Terry Collins said the team will determine the next step for the 25-year-old righty ''whether it's another bullpen or use him in a game.''

          • MLB roundup: Dodgers win fourth straight
            September 16, 2017

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians had to wait awhile, but they eventually clinched the American League Central title on Saturday.

The Indians took care of their game as Francisco Lindor had three hits and Edwin Encarnacion homered and had two RBIs as the Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 8-4.

That brought their magic number to one, and the Indians clinched later in the day when the second-place Minnesota Twins lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2.

It's the second straight division title for Cleveland, which lost to the Chicago Cubs in last year's World Series.

In Saturday's victory, Lindor had an extra-base hit in a 10th consecutive game, which is a team record. Carlos Carrasco (16-6) pitched into the seventh inning to get the win.

Jason Hammel (8-12) gave up seven runs (six earned) and 11 hits in six innings in taking the loss.

            Dodgers 3, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON -- Rich Hill allowed just one hit and one run in five innings and combined with five relievers on a four-hitter and rookie Cody Bellinger was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs as Los Angeles defeated Washington.

After losing 11 games in a row, the Dodgers have now won four straight. The Nationals have lost four of five since clinching the National League East title Sept. 10.

Closer Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 38th save as he retired all three batters he faced.

            Reds 2, Pirates 1

CINCINNATI -- Sal Romano shut out Pittsburgh through a career-high eight innings to lead the Cincinnati victory.

Jesse Winker homered, and Romano (5-6) allowed only five hits and had six strikeouts with no walks.

            Yankees 9, Orioles 3

NEW YORK -- Didi Gregorius, Greg Bird and Todd Frazier homered as New York continued its production against Baltimore.

Gregorius and Bird homered for the second straight game by hitting three-run homers off Jeremy Hellickson (2-5) in the third and fourth innings. Frazier capped the scoring with a long-two run homer in the seventh off Donnie Hart.

The Yankees, who are 12-6 against the Orioles, have scored 150 runs against the Orioles, setting the major league record for the most runs scored by any team against an opponent since 1961.

            Cubs 4, Cardinals 1

CHICAGO -- Kyle Hendricks allowed one run on six hits and carried a shutout into the eighth inning as he presided over Chicago's fifth straight win.

Hendricks (7-5) struck out five and walked one in his third victory since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 26. Cubs reliever Wade Davis faced four batters in a scoreless ninth for his 30th save in 30 opportunities.

Albert Almora Jr. was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Anthony Rizzo added two hits while Dexter Fowler topped St. Louis with a pair.

            Astros 8, Mariners 6

HOUSTON -- Dallas Keuchel (13-4) worked six strong innings and Joe Musgrove provided effective relief work in Houston's win.

Musgrove inherited two runners with no outs in the eighth inning with the Astros holding a two-run lead. Musgrove recorded a pair of strikeouts before getting Seattle catcher Carlos Ruiz to pop out. Musgrove returned in the ninth and picked up his first career save despite allowing a two-out homer to Mitch Haniger.

The Astros (90-58) reached 90 victories in a season for the first time since 2004.

Carlos Beltran finished 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

            Red Sox 3, Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rick Porcello took a shutout into the eighth inning to help Boston win its third straight game.

The Red Sox, who have won eight of their last 10 games, got a solo home run and an RBI single from Mookie Betts.

Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 33rd save and his seventh straight scoreless appearance.

            White Sox 10, Tigers 4

DETROIT -- Nicky Delmonico and Matt Davidson hit solo home runs and Jose Abreu moved closer to another 100-RBI season with a run-scoring single plus a sacrifice fly to lead Chicago past Detroit.

Abreu has 97 RBIs to close in on his fourth straight season of 25 home runs and 100 RBIs to begin his career.

The Tigers have lost seven of their last eight games.

            Mets 7, Braves 3

ATLANTA -- Jacob deGrom allowed one run over seven innings and won his career-best 15th game as New York snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Atlanta.

DeGrom (15-9) gave up five hits, two walks and struck out seven to secure his first win since Aug. 25. His only hiccup was a solo homer to Freddie Freeman, his 27th, who had two of Atlanta's hits.

The Mets strung together 11 hits and handed Atlanta starter R.A. Dickey (9-10) his first career loss against his former team.

            Blue Jays 7, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Josh Donaldson homered twice and Jose Bautista broke out of a slump with a three-hit night as Toronto beat Minnesota.

Donaldson homered in the first and ninth innings to bookend his four-hit night. Bautista, who came into Saturday's game in the midst of an 0-for-17 skid, went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

            Marlins 7, Brewers 4

MILWAUKEE -- Adam Conley picked up his first victory since Aug. 20 and Derek Dietrich hit his 12th home run of the season to help Miami snap a six-game losing streak by beating Milwaukee.

The Marlins' offense collected 12 hits, with Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna and Dietrich recording two apiece.

Zach Davies (17-9) never had his command and lasted just four innings -- his shortest start of the season.

            Angels 2, Rangers 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Parker Bridwell threw six shutout innings and Justin Upton homered twice to lead Los Angeles past Texas.

The victory pulled the Angels back within a game of the Minnesota Twins for the second American League wild-card spot.

Upton homered in the first inning off Cole Hamels and again in the eighth. Bridwell (8-2) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked two. He was removed after walking Joey Gallo to start the seventh with his 90th pitch.

            Phillies 5, Athletics 3

PHILADELPHIA - Rookie Jorge Alfaro hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to push Philadelphia past Oakland.

Phillies righty Victor Arano (1-0) secured his first career win with two innings of relief, and he has yet to concede a run in three major league appearances.

The game included a one-hour and 46-minute rain delay.

            Diamondbacks 2, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Zack Greinke allowed two hits in eight shutout innings and Paul Goldschmidt provided all the offensive support he needed with a two-run, first-inning homer for Arizona.

The win allowed the Diamondbacks (87-62) to remain five games atop the National League wild-card standings with 13 to play.

Arizona has won nine in a row on the road, equaling a franchise record set in August 2002.

            Rockies 16, Padres 0

DENVER -- Tyler Anderson, making his first start since June 25, held San Diego hitless for 5 2/3 innings and ended up allowing two hits in six shutout innings for Colorado.

The win was the 10th in 13 games for the Rockies, who lead the Milwaukee Brewers by 3 1/2 games and the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 1/2 games in the race for the second National League wild-card spot.

Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in four runs, giving him a National League-record 92 RBIs as a leadoff man and 93 RBIs overall. Pinch hitter Pat Valaika belted a grand slam in the six-run seventh.

            • LEADING OFF: Strasburg's shutout streak, Kipnis debuts in CF
              September 16, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

              SHUTOUT STREAK

Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg tries to extend his franchise record of 34 straight scoreless innings when he starts at night against the Dodgers. Strasburg is 13-4 going into this matchup of NL division leaders vs. Hyun-Jin Ryu. Los Angeles has won four in a row since its 11-game losing streak, and is going for a sweep at Washington.

              PARTY IN HOUSTON?

The Astros can clinch their first division title since 2001 with a win over Seattle or a loss by the Angels against the Rangers. This would be Houston's seventh division crown and first since switching to the American League for the 2013 season. Justin Verlander (12-8, 3.58 ERA) will make his first start at Houston since being acquired from the Tigers. He'll face right-hander Andrew Moore (1-3, 5.36).

              CENTER OF ATTENTION

Jason Kipnis is expected to return from the disabled list for Cleveland and pick up a new position: center field. Kipnis last played the outfield as a minor leaguer in 2009, but an injury to rookie Bradley Zimmer has created a hole in center that the two-time All-Star second baseman is set to fill. ''I'm pretty sure I've got it in me,'' Kipnis said earlier this week. ''I think I can still do it.'' Kipnis is scheduled to play at least five innings in center against Kansas City.

              RIGHT PRICE

Red Sox lefty David Price could make a relief appearance when the AL East leaders wrap up their series at Tropicana Field. He hasn't pitched since July 22 because of elbow inflammation, and manager John Farrell recently said Price would work out of the bullpen. Price's last game as a reliever was in 2015 during the AL playoffs with Toronto; the last time he relieved in a regular-season game was 2010 with Tampa Bay.

              WAIT AND SEE

The Cubs plan to evaluate injured right-hander Jake Arrieta a day after he threw a 42-pitch bullpen session. The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner has been out since Sept. 4 with a right hamstring strain, and Chicago wants to see how he responds to Saturday's bullpen before determining his next step. Arrieta was 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA over six starts in August.

HOUSTON (AP) Justin Verlander struck out 10 over seven innings in his first home start for Houston, Derek Fisher and Marwin Gonzalez homered in a big fifth inning and the Astros clinched the American League West with a 7-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday for their first division title since 2001.

George Springer and Carlos Correa also homered for the Astros, who won their first division title since 2001 and seventh overall. The Astros become the first team in major league history to win titles in three divisions after previously winning the NL West and NL Central.

Verlander (13-8) retired his first seven batters before Ben Gamel homered into the right-center bullpen in the third. He allowed just two singles after that to improve to 3-0 since he was acquired from Detroit on Aug. 31.

Andrew Moore (1-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                  TIGERS 12, WHITE SOX 0

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd's no-hit bid ended when Tim Anderson doubled with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Detroit left-hander closed out a one-hitter for the first shutout of his professional career.

Boyd (6-10) allowed only two runners - a walk to Rob Brantly in the third and Anderson's double to the gap in right-center field with two outs in the ninth. He struck out five and threw 121 pitches - his big league high.

Dylan Covey (0-6) allowed five runs, seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Nick Castellanos, Mikie Mahtook and Jeimer Candelario homered.

                  NATIONALS 7, DODGERS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg ended his club-record scoreless streak at 35 innings, but two home runs from Ryan Zimmerman helped the All-Star win his fourth consecutive start as Washington beat Los Angeles.

Strasburg (14-4) allowed a run in the second inning on Logan Forsythe's double, the first against the right-hander since Aug. 19. He struck out eight and combined with three relievers to toss a five-hitter.

The Nationals avoided a three-game sweep against the NL frontrunners. Washington's slumbering offense came alive on Zimmerman's three-run shot in the sixth off reliever Ross Stripling (3-5). Zimmerman and pinch-hitter Adam Lind homered in the eighth.

Los Angeles lost 11 in a row and 16 of 17 before ripping off four consecutive wins, including the first two games this series. The Dodgers magic number to clinch the NL West dropped to four when second-place Arizona lost at San Francisco.

                  RAYS 3, RED SOX 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Price pitched two hitless innings in his first big league game since July 22 after being sidelined by left elbow inflammation. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner made his first relief appearance since 2010.

Jake Odorizzi (9-8) gave up one hit in six innings, a Jackie Bradley Jr. home run. Jesus Sucre hit a tiebreaking solo home run off Eduardo Rodriguez (5-6) in the sixth. Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 45th save. Tampa Bay remained 5+ games behind the Twins.

                  PADRES 4, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Rockies closer Greg Holland dropped the ball trying to tag Matt Szczur at home on Austin Hedge's squeeze bunt in the ninth inning, allowing San Diego to finish its rally and beat Colorado.

Hedges bunted back to Holland (3-6) with runners at the corners and one out, but after making a nice play to scoop up the ball, Holland lost control trying to tag a sliding Szczur.

Colorado's bullpen blew its first save in three weeks and let the Rockies' lead for the second NL wild card shrink to 2 1/2 games over Milwaukee. The Brewers beat Miami on Sunday, and St. Louis, which lost to the Chicago Cubs, stayed 4 1/2 back.

Kirby Yates (4-5) pitched the eighth, and Brad Hand got the last three outs for his 18th save.

                  ORIOLES 6, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Ubaldo Jimenez (6-1) struck out 10 in just five innings, and Tim Beckham hit a three-run homer off Sonny Gray (9-11), who allowed five runs in four innings during his shortest start this season.

Didi Gregorius homered for the third straight day as New York's four-game winning streak ended. The Yankees remained three games behind AL East-leading Boston and four games ahead of Minnesota for the top AL wild card. Baltimore, which had lost nine of 10, is 5+ games behind the Twins.

With two outs and a runner on third in the ninth, Zach Britton intentionally walked Aaron Judge, then struck out Gary Sanchez for his 15th save.

                  TWINS 13, BLUE JAYS 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eddie Rosario homered twice, Joe Mauer hit his first grand slam at home and Minnesota overcame a 5-0 deficit with seven runs in the second inning and six in the fifth.

Kyle Gibson (11-10) allowed five runs, three hits and five walks in six innings. Joe Biagini (3-11) gave up six runs - four earned - and five hits in 1 1/3 innings.

                  RANGERS 4, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Joey Gallo hit a home run off Garrett Richards (0-2) that landed near the top of the grass hill in center field in the second inning, a drive that would have traveled 490 feet unimpeded, according to MLB Statcast.

Adrian Beltre ht a two-run double to center field in the first.

Miguel Gonzalez (8-11) allowed one run and two hits in five innings, and Jake Diekman got five outs for his first save this season.

                  INDIANS 3, ROYALS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - A day after Cleveland clinched the AL Central, Corey Kluber (17-4) allowed three singles in seven innings. He has not given up a run in 22 innings and has lost once since July 4.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Danny Duffy (8-9) as the Indians improved to 33-5 since Aug. 11 despite getting only three hits. Cody Allen worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth for his 28th save. Kansas City dropped five games behind the Twins.

                  CUBS 4, CARDINALS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett hit two-run homers in the sixth off Gerrit Cole (11-11) as Cincinnati completed its second three-game sweep of Pittsburgh this season.

                  • Astros clinch AL West with win over M's
                    September 17, 2017

HOUSTON (AP) When the Houston Astros traded for Justin Verlander less than three weeks ago, they envisioned days like this.

Verlander struck out 10 over seven innings in his first home start for Houston, Derek Fisher and Marwin Gonzalez homered in a big fifth inning and the Astros clinched the American League West with a 7-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

''The story is almost too good to be true,'' manager A.J. Hinch said. ''We trade for him for this exact reason to come up in big moments. He was locked in from the very beginning. Nobody better to have on the mound and nobody better to celebrate with.''

The Astros acquired the ace from Detroit on Aug. 31, just minutes before the deadline for players to be eligible for postseason play. He had made two starts on the road before his Minute Maid Park debut.

''I don't think you could ask for a better introduction for me to the city of Houston than this,'' Verlander said. ''First home start would have been great. First home start and a win would have been great. First home start and to win in a division-clinching game - you can't make that up. And I'm looking forward to hopefully many more wins.''

George Springer and Carlos Correa also homered for the Astros, who won their first division title since 2001 and seventh overall. The Astros become the first team in major league history to win titles in three divisions after previously winning the NL West and NL Central.

As the Astros celebrated Sunday's accomplishment, they were quick to point out that they want to finish the regular season strong to try and gain home-field advantage in the postseason b`y finishing with the best record in the AL. Houston led the AL for most of the season, but Cleveland moved ahead with its recent 22-game winning streak.

''For us, this is just the beginning,'' Correa said. ''We are just getting started.''

Houston has reached the postseason three times as a wild-card team since winning last winning its division in 2001 - with a team that included Seattle manager Scott Servais. The Astros will return to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons after ending a 10-year postseason drought in 2015.

Owner Jim Crane, who bought the team in 2011 and oversaw rebuilding, reveled in the celebration.

''I had a little tear in my eye,'' he said. ''This has been a long time coming. It was our goal from the get-go to work hard at it, build the team and we have a really good ball club.''

For the few players still on the team who endured the really lean years, winning the first division title in 16 years was even more special.

''It means a lot because I was here when we lost 100 games three years in a row,'' Jose Altuve said. ''Now I'm part of some winning teams and that means a lot to me.''

Verlander (13-8) retired his first seven batters before Ben Gamel homered into the right-center bullpen in the third. He allowed just two singles after that to improve to 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA since the trade. Verlander walked one and raised his strikeout total with Houston to 26 in three games.

''We knew we were going to have to keep it close because we probably weren't going to get a lot off Verlander,'' Servais said. ''Obviously, he was really good again today.''

Houston had trouble stringing hits together until the fifth inning, when Yuli Gurriel singled and Fisher homered to straightaway center off Andrew Moore (1-4) for a 2-1 lead.

Springer singled and Moore got two outs before being replaced by James Pazos. Gonzalez sent his fourth pitch off the wall in left field for his 22nd home run to make it 4-1.

Moore allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He is 0-4 in seven starts and two relief appearances since June 22.

Springer hit his 32nd homer, a solo shot in the seventh off Emilio Pagan. Correa made it 7-1 later in the inning with a two-run homer.

                    TRAINER'S ROOM

Astros: RHP Lance McCullers will not return to the rotation on Tuesday and will instead throw another bullpen in a couple of days before the team decides when he will pitch again. ... INF Colin Moran was activated from the disabled list on Sunday. He's been out since July 23 after suffering facial fractures when he fouled a ball off his face.

                    THEY SAID IT

Hinch on his message to the team after the game: ''I just said thank you for everything that this season is about and also to stay focused for what's ahead. We have a chance to have a really special run here.''

                    UP NEXT

Mariners: RHP Mike Leake (3-0, 2.41 ERA) pitches in the opener of a series against Texas on Tuesday.

Astros: RHP Collin McHugh (2-2, 3.61) is scheduled to start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. McHugh left after three innings in his last start because of a problem with his fingernail.

                    • Wong returns to Cardinals lineup after back issue
                      September 17, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong is back in the lineup after being sidelined by back spasms.

Wong left in the seventh inning of Friday's 8-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs and rested on Saturday. He got the start for Sunday's series finale at Wrigley Field.

Center fielder Dexter Fowler also was in the lineup after he was hit on the hand by a pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-1 loss.

Nationals' Harper takes BP for first time since injury
                      September 17, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 13, took batting practice on the field Sunday for the first time since he hyperextended his left knee while running out a grounder on a wet field against the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 12.

Harper took several cuts and several balls landed well above the fence in center field. The left-handed hitter was the National League MVP in 2015 when he hit .330 with 42 homers and this year is batting .326 with 29 homers and 87 RBIs in 106 games.

The Las Vegas native took batting practice before the Sunday night ESPN game of the week against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have the best record in the majors. The teams have the two best records in the National League and the Dodgers (96-52) beat the Nationals (89-59) in five games in last year's NLDS.

"I felt a little off, still," Harper told reporters. "Not my knee, per se, but more just myself. It's going to take some time to get back and get in focus. Got a long ways to go, and hopefully be back soon."

Can he be ready for the playoffs, which start for the Nationals at home Oct. 6?

"I hope so," Harper told reporters. "That's definitely in my head. That's what I want to do. That's where I want to be. But it takes time."

What would the return of Harper mean to the Washington lineup for the playoffs?

"When you talk about slotting Bryce Harper, there are no freebies in that lineup. He is one of the premier players in the game," Dodgers left-handed reliever Tony Watson told The Sports Xchange before the game Sunday night. "You want the great players to be out there and showcase themselves for the game. Hopefully, he gets right and we can see him in a couple of weeks."

Watson was a longtime reliever with the Pittsburgh Pirates, when he was called on to face Harper in the late innings. Watson was traded by Pittsburgh to the Dodgers on July 31.

"They have had their share of injuries over there, which is unfortunate," Watson said of the Nationals. "They have a great team. They could have gone down in the dumps, (but) they have strong leaders over there. It is a testament to their organization."

Dodgers infielder Charlie Culberson said having Harper would make the Nationals even stronger.

"Obviously big things," he said Sunday. "I had a chance to make the postseason roster last year and it was one of the best series I have ever been part of, including Game 5 here. Fortunately, we came out on top. Every pitch means something. They are a tough team to beat."

LEADING OFF: Will Romine play 9? Plus Marlins return home
                      September 17, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                      ROAMING ROMINE?

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he may play Andrew Romine at all nine positions during one of Detroit's games this week against Oakland. Romine has played everywhere except catcher in his career, and if he needs pointers behind the plate, he can ask his brother Austin, a backstop with the New York Yankees. With Detroit closing out the season against playoff-chasing Minnesota and Kansas City, this series against the A's is the last chance Romine would get to play all nine in a game without possible postseason implications.

                      FINALLY HOME

The Marlins are set to return home for the first time since Hurricane Irma struck Miami. After rallying to a .500 record and posing a possible NL wild-card threat last month, Miami has lost 17 of 20, including eight of 10 since hitting the road while Irma approached. The Marlins will begin this home series against the Mets with Dan Straily on the mound against New York's Matt Harvey.

                      FANCY MEETING YOU HERE

The Twins take on the Yankees to begin a series between the top AL wild-card contenders, and Minnesota's first test comes against New York left-hander Jaime Garcia, who very briefly joined the Twins this summer. Garcia went from Atlanta to Minnesota in a trade, made one start, then was flipped to New York when the Twins dropped in the standings ahead of the trade deadline. Minnesota roared back into the chase, though, and is now two games ahead of the Angels for the AL's last playoff spot. Garcia is winless in six starts for the Yankees.

                      WELCOME JOLT

J.D. Martinez has been exactly the spark Arizona hoped for, and the midseason acquisition leads the NL wild-card contenders into a series against San Diego. Martinez has 24 homers in 51 games since being traded from Detroit to the Diamondbacks, giving him 40 on the season. Arizona's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is six.

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

                        14) Broncos 42, Cowboys 17— Broncos scored TD’s on five of their first seven drives. Denver was 9-15 on 3rd down, had 26 first downs and ran ball for 178 yards, while holding Dallas to 40 rushing yards in a surprisingly easy win. Cowboys had ball in red zone twice in 4th quarter, but lost ball on downs once, had a 103-INT return for a TD against them on the other drive.

                        13) Chiefs 27, Eagles 20— Andy Reid is now 2-0 against his old team; Kelce caught 8 passes for 103 yards on only 10 targets as KC opens 2-0. Philly gained 406 yards, had 27 first downs, converted 8-15 on 3rd down, but Wentz was sacked six times and Philly turned over twice (-2)- they scored only 20 points on five red zone drives.

                        12) Patriots 36, Saints 20— Brady threw for 177 yards in the first quarter here; Buffalo gained 176 yards in their whole game. This game was 30-10 at the half, so Patriots took their foot off the pedal at halftime and coasted to an easy win. Total yardage was 555-429; NE was 6-12 on third down; seven of their 10 drives wound up in the New Orleans red zone.

                        11) Cardinals 16, Colts 13 OT— Brissett’s only INT in his second NFL start was on the first play of OT, which set the Cardinals up to kick a FG without getting a first down. Arizona was down 13-3 with 8:00 left, but tied game with 3:25 left in regulation- they had 389-266 edge in yardage, but scored only six points on three red zone drives.

                        10) Titans 37, Jaguars 16— Tennessee ran for 179 yards, held Leonard Fournette to 40 yards on 14 carries. Titans scored TD’s the last four times they had the ball, with three of those drives less than 50 yards. Jaguars now head to England for a game with the Ravens next week.

                        9) Ravens 24, Browns 10— Baltimore opens season with pair of divisional wins, allowing only one TD on 23 drives. Browns gained 386 yards, but turned ball over five times (-3) in rookie QB Kizer’s first NFL road start. Ravens had a 12-yard advantage in field position.

                        8) Steelers 26, Vikings 9— Sam Bradford (knee) was a late scratch; Case Keenum played QB for the Vikings, who were outgained 335-237 in this flagfest, where both teams had 10+ penalties. Steelers had a 14-3 halftime lead, then kicked four FG’s on five second half drives. Teams were a combined 8-28 on third down.

                        7) Panthers 9, Bills 3— Total yardage was 255-176 in this pitchers’ duel with zero turnovers in it. Buffalo had one first down in first half, never got inside the Carolina red zone. Panthers had 12 first downs in first half, had a 10-yard edge in field position; they kicked FG’s on all three red zone drives.

                        6) Buccaneers 29, Bears 7— Mike Glennon was Tampa Bay’s backup QB the last four years; the Bucs kicked his butt here, forcing four Tampa Bay turnovers (+3) in a game they led 26-0 at the half. Glennon did throw for 301 yards but also two picks. Both teams were 50%+ on 3rd down; teams combined to score 27 points on eight red zone drives, which killed the over bettors.

                        5) Dolphins 19, Chargers 17— Rookie kicker Koo missed 43 and 44-yard FG’s wide right in the last minute of each half, as Chargers lost their home opener in their temporary home, ironically a soccer stadium. Koo also missed the gem-tying FG Monday night in Denver.

Miami kicker Pankey was 4-4 on FG’s; Dolphins won despite kicking three FG’s on three red zone drives, not exactly an ideal performance. Teams combined to go only 7-21 on 3rd down.

                        4) Seahawks 12, 49ers 9— Seattle has offensive issues; they drove 82 yards on 10 plays for the game’s only TD with 7:06 left, Seattle’s only TD on 20 drives this season. Seahawks have scored one TD, kicked four FG’s on five red zone drives; they gave up 159 rushing yards to the 49ers, who still haven’t scored a TD this season (four FG’s on 21 drives).

                        3) Raiders 45, Jets 20— WR Crabtree caught three TD passes, as Oakland jogged to an easy win in their home opener, outgaining the Jets 410-271. Raiders scored four TD’s, kicked a FG on their last five drives; they had a 9-yard edge in field position, starting three of their last five drives in Jet territory. Oakland also ran the ball for 180 yards.

                        2) Redskins 27, Rams 20— Washington grabbed early 13-0 lead, Rams fought back to a 20-all tie, but Washington drove ball 70 yards in ten plays for GW score with 1:49 left. Thompson had a 61-yard TD run for the Redskins just before the half that made the Rams’ climb a little more uphill. Despite Aaron Donald’s presence, Redskins ran the ball for 229 yards. Both teams are now 1-1.

                        1) Falcons 34, Packers 23– Atlanta is now 2-0 as they head to Detroit next week; this was the regular season opener in their new stadium. Packers were without both their starting OT’s, which makes it harder to protect Aaron Rodgers, who threw an awful lateral that was run back for a Falcon touchdown.

                          — Marlins 13, Mets 1— Giancarlo Stanton hit his 55th home run; he has 117 RBI, Marcell Ozuna has 113— will they both be Marlins next year?

                          — Chargers are sticking with kicker Younghoe Koo, who missed clutch FG’s at the end of the Bolts’ first two games the last two weeks.

                          — Red Sox 10, Orioles 8— Wild game at Camden Yards.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

                          13) Lions 24, Giants 10— Detroit broke game open with an 88-yard punt return for a TD; they’re 2-0 while Giants are 0-2, having scored only one TD on 18 drives so far this season.

One thing thats going to be an issue in Detroit, if they have a good season this year; Jim Caldwell doesn’t have a contract past this season. Think about Tampa Bay/Lovie Smith, when he got fired because Bucs’ brass liked the job OC Dirk Koetter was doing with franchise QB Jameis Winston- they didn’t want Koetter leaving, so they made him head coach.

Same thing could happen in Detroit if OC Jim Bob Cooter becomes a hot name on the coaching carousel; if the Lions want Cooter/Matthew Stafford to stay connected, they may have to make Cooter the head coach to keep him in the Motor City. Stay tuned.

                          12) Obscure Lions’ trivia: Cooter was Peyton Manning’s backup QB at Tennessee.

                          11) Matthew Stafford is now 53-58 as an NFL starting QB, plus 0-3 in playoff games. Detroit was 0-16 the year before they drafted him.

Jon Gruden called him “a great quarterback” last night. I’m not disputing that at all, just repeating his words. Stafford has attempted more passes per game than anyone in NFL history— I wouldn’t have guessed that.

                          10) Archie Manning (Peyton/Eli’s dad) was a great college football player at Ole Miss; he was just like Steve Young, except he threw righty instead of lefty. Otherwise, the same; great mobility, solid passer, but in the NFL, Archie Manning played 11 years for the then-putrid New Orleans Saints. No bueno.

There was was no free agency back then; Manning got pummeled playing on a horrible team; his record was 35-91-3 as a starter for New Orleans, which is probably why Archie orchestrated Eli’s trade from San Diego to the Giants after the 2003 draft.

                          9) My point is this: football is a TEAM game; no one player makes a team great. I’m reading lot of media nitwits who follow the “narrative flowchart”:

                          — Team A won: Team A’s quarterback is on the upswing.
                          — Team A lost: Team A’s quarterback was a lousy draft pick, or is over-the-hill.

It is just lazy commentary; developing players is a process, it takes years to become a great player. Matthew Stafford is under .500 in his career, but Jon Gruden says he is a great QB, and that’s good enough for me.

                          8) Arizona Wildcats have a 26-year old freshman QB named Donovan Tate who was drafted 22 spots above Mike Trout in the 2009 baseball draft- he was the third player taken.

San Diego Padres gave Tate a $5M+ signing bonus in ‘09, then watched his struggle with injuries and off-field problems ruin his baseball career. Now Tate is trying football and is a backup QB now— he is the son of former Georgia running back Lars Tate.

                          7) Atlanta Braves are moving their spring training HQ from Kisssimmee to Sarasota; they’re having groundbreaking on the new facility in October.

                          6) Everyone was a kid once: ESPN’s Jon Gruden hit a home run in Little League off of John Parry, the referee in the Lions-Giants game last night.

                          5) At one point in his career, Andy Reid was the offensive line coach at UTEP. He’s come a very long way since then. Offensive line coach at UTEP is not usually a stepping stone to the NFL.

                          4) Record for most total home runs in a season is 5,693, which figures to fall late this week.

                          3) Weird stat: the NFL quarterback with the most wins in FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, home of the Browns, is Ben Roethlisberger, with 11. He obviously plays for the Steelers, which is bad for the Browns.

                          2) No baseball team has ever made the playoffs after losing more than 97 games the previous season. Minnesota lost 103 games last season and right now, they hold one of the AL Wild Card spots, so they could make some history soon

                          1) Had a great weekend in Philadelphia the past few days; very underrated city. Saw the A’s play three games, had some cheesesteaks, visited with friends. Good stuff, very much appreciated.

                          • LEADING OFF: Maddon back in TB; Yanks-Twins in WC preview?
                            September 18, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

                            GOOD TO BE BACK

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon says he's looking forward to a two-game series at Tampa Bay. Maddon guided the Rays for nine seasons - they were the Devil Rays when he started in 2006 - and went 754-708, along with leading them to their only World Series appearance. The Cubs are visiting Tropicana Field for the first time since 2008, when Tampa Bay swept all three games and then-rookie Evan Longoria had an RBI in each victory. Maddon still has a lot of friends in the area, and his foundation recently donated $25,000 to those affected by Hurricane Irma.

                            YOUNG AND OLD

When the Yankees host Minnesota in the middle game of their potential AL wild-card preview, it will be 37-year-old CC Sabathia on the mound for New York against 23-year-old Jose Berrios. Sabathia (11-5, 3.85 ERA) needs one strikeout to match Mickey Lolich (2,832) for third place all-time among left-handers. Sabathia, who will pitch on seven days' rest, is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in five starts since returning last month from a brief stint on the DL due to right knee inflammation. Berrios (12-7, 3.84) beat New York 6-1 back home on July 19.

                            TOUGH AS NAILS

Astros right-hander Collin McHugh pitches for the first time since detaching a fingernail on his pitching hand Sept. 8. McHugh (2-2, 3.61) will be making just his 10th start this season after also missing time with a shoulder issue. AL West-winning Houston will open a home series against the White Sox, who plan to send out Lucas Giolito (2-2, 2.56).

                            DREW FOR 17

Boston left-hander Drew Pomeranz vies for his 17th victory in a game against Baltimore. Pitching for the contending Red Sox, Pomeranz has soared past his previous career best in victories (11). He was just 25-36 over six big league seasons heading into this year, but now he's at .500 thanks to a 16-5 mark in 2017. Kevin Gausman will pitch for the Orioles.
