            September 13, 2017

Hottest team: Indians (20-0 last 20) vs. Tigers

The American League pennant will have to go through Cleveland once again. The Indians tied the 2002 Oakland Athletics’ record for most consecutive victories by an AL team after blanking the Tigers, 2-0 on Tuesday. Cleveland hasn’t allowed more than two runs in seven straight wins, while yielding only five runs in the past six victories over Detroit in September.

The Indians go for win number 21 in a row in a matinee at Progressive Field as Mike Clevinger takes the mound. The right-hander hasn’t given up a run in his last three starts, while striking out 22 batters in his past 18 innings of work. Clevinger owns a perfect 3-0 record against the Tigers this season, yielding one run in 18 innings, while scattering eight hits.

Coldest team: Dodgers (1-11 last 12) at Giants

Although Los Angeles snapped its 11-game losing skid in Tuesday’s 5-3 victory at San Francisco, the Dodgers still qualify for this category. It wasn’t easy, as closer Kelsey Jansen escaped a bases-loaded jam to give Los Angeles its first win since September 1 at San Diego, which was also started by Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers have lost 15 in a row when Kershaw doesn’t toe the rubber, with the last victory by a starter other than the Cy Young winner coming on August 25 against Milwaukee.

Yu Darvish will look to extend the winning streak to two at AT&T Park as the right-hander has lost his past three starts, all as a favorite of -200 or higher. In Darvish’s previous two outings, he has allowed 10 earned runs in only 7.1 innings of work, but he does boast a 2-1 record in three road starts with the Dodgers since getting traded from Texas in late August.

Hottest pitcher: Doug Fister, Red Sox (5-7, 3.91 ERA)

In Fister’s first four starts with Boston, the Sox lost three times, while allowing 18 runs in that span. The right-hander has turned things around recently, as Boston has compiled a 4-2 record in his past six starts, including a pair of dominating performances against red-hot Cleveland. Fister has tossed at least seven innings in four consecutive starts, including recent victories over the Blue Jays and Yankees. The Red Sox continue their series with the A’s after Boston pounded Oakland on Tuesday, 11-1.

Coldest pitcher: Tyler Glasnow, Pirates (2-6, 7.45 ERA)

Pittsburgh couldn’t capitalize off Monday’s shutout of Milwaukee as the Pirates lost last night at Miller Park. Things won’t get easier as Glasnow searches for his first victory since May 18. Granted, the right-hander has been pitching at Triple-A the last few months, but he finished his tenure with the big club losing his final three starts, while giving up 16 runs in that span.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (9-1 last 10)

Oakland’s offense took the night off on Tuesday following a productive weekend against Houston. The A’s topped the nine-run mark in all four victories against the Astros, but could muster only a single run in Tuesday’s 11-1 blowout at Boston. Another OVER can be in the works at Fenway Park as Jharel Cotton has registered three straight OVERS for Oakland, while allowing at least five runs in four of his past five road starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (5-0 last five)

Baltimore is going backwards at the wrong time by dropping its sixth consecutive game on Tuesday, 3-2 in walk-off fashion to Toronto. The Orioles’ offense isn’t helping the cause by scoring two runs or fewer in five losses during this stretch. Kevin Gausman looks to end Baltimore’s recent woes as the right-hander was knocked around in his past outing against the Yankees by allowing five earned runs in a 9-1 defeat. In spite of that OVER against New York, the Orioles are 7-2 to the UNDER in Gausman’s last nine starts.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Angels

Houston is still firmly in control of the AL West, but the Astros were tripped up this past weekend in a four-game sweep by the Athletics. The Astros likely won’t get home-field advantage in the American League as the Indians have passed Houston in that department following Cleveland’s massive winning streak. However, the Astros did end their losing streak on Tuesday behind Justin Verlander in a 1-0 shutout of the Angels to send Los Angeles to its fourth defeat in the last five games.

Lance McCullers, Jr. was set to start for the Astros, but he was scratched due to arm fatigue. Mike Fiers will take the mound in McCullers’ place, looking for his first victory since August 23 against the Nationals. The right-hander hasn’t pitched well of late, allowing 14 earned runs in a pair of starts against the Rangers and Mets, while giving up two earned runs in an inning of relief of a 9-8 setback at Oakland last Friday. Fiers has seen success against the Angels this season by posting a 2-0 record, including a 5-3 victory in Anaheim back in May.

Tyler Skaggs counters for Los Angeles, as the southpaw is winless in his last five trips to the mound. The Angels are 1-4 in this stretch with the only victory coincidentally coming against the Astros in a dramatic 7-6 triumph as L.A. erased a 6-1 deficit. The Angels’ offense has been quiet of late by scoring one run or fewer in three of its last four losses, but the Halos own a solid 7-1 record in their last eight Game 2’s of a home series.

            Betcha didn’t know:
The Twins have the ability to bust out the bats at any given time. Minnesota dropped a 20-spot earlier this season in a blowout of Seattle, while ripping San Diego on Tuesday, 16-0. The Twins have responded well after scoring in double-digits by posting a 6-2 record in their next game in the last eight opportunities in this situation. Following last night’s win, Minnesota has compiled nine consecutive victories over National League opponents.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-325) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Yankees (+105) vs. Rays

Biggest line move: Mariners (-105 to -110) at Rangers

              • MLB notebook: Japanese star plans to join major leagues in 2018
                September 13, 2017

Japanese sensation Shohei Otani, a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher and left-handed hitter, is expected to be posted by his team and play in the major leagues in 2018, according to multiple reports.

Otani has put up MVP pitching and hitting numbers for the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Otani, commonly referred to as the Japanese Babe Ruth, hit .322 with 22 home runs and 67 RBIs in 104 games and had a 1.86 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 140 innings last season.

Injuries to his ankle and thigh sidelined Otani for two months early this season and kept him off the mound for a stretch in July and August. He has still managed to hit .346 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 51 games this season.

Otani signed a one-year, $2.37 million contract with the Fighters in December and said he wanted to move to the major leagues after the 2017 season.

--The Marlins agreed to move this weekend's scheduled home series against the Brewers to Milwaukee as Miami attempts to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, it was announced.

"Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Miami Marlins, agreed that it is in the best interest of our community to relocate this weekend's Marlins games," Marlins president David Samson said in a statement. "Marlins Park stood ready to host the games, but we all agreed that burdening public service resources was not the proper course of action.

"Following Hurricane Irma, the Miami Marlins realize that all of our employees, as well as our entire community, have other needs that must take a priority at this time."

Marlins Park sustained minor roof damage in the hurricane, which ravaged the state of Florida.

                --The Rays
will return home to play at Tropicana Field on Friday following the relocation of the three-game series against the New York Yankees to Citi Field due to Hurricane Irma.

Players met Tuesday before a designated home game at Citi Field in New York and voted to travel back to the Tampa area after Wednesday afternoon's game against the Yankees to check on the status of their houses and belongings in the Irma aftermath.

The Rays host the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series starting Friday and the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday and Wednesday in the five-game homestand.

                --Ten-time All-Star
and three-time World Series champion David Ortiz is returning to the Boston Red Sox ... in a front-office role.

The Red Sox announced they have a "long-term agreement" with Ortiz that "should link him with the organization forever."

Ortiz will act as a mentor for current players, participate in recruitment efforts, make a variety of special appearances and work in a business development capacity for Fenway Sports Management and its partners, the team announced.

                --The Cincinnati Reds
placed right-hander Drew Storen on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain, the team announced Wednesday.

The move is retroactive to Sept. 10, although the 30-year-old Storen last pitched against Pittsburgh on Sept. 1. Storen posted a 4-2 mark with one save, a 4.45 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings of relief this season.

                • LEADING OFF: Indians go for 22nd straight, Miller off DL
                  September 13, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                  RECORD RUN

Now that they've set an AL record with 21 consecutive wins, the seemingly unstoppable Indians take aim at the major league mark of 26 in a row by the 1916 New York Giants. Cleveland tries for No. 22 when it hosts Kansas City in the opener of a four-game series. Josh Tomlin, who is 5-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last six outings, pitches against Royals rookie Jake Junis. Kansas City was outscored 20-0 during its three-day visit to Cleveland last month, but maybe Junis can finally slow down the Indians. He is 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA in his past six starts. With a 5-3 victory Wednesday over Detroit, the Indians matched the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second-longest winning streak since 1900. One note about those 1916 Giants - their century-old record includes a tie during the string. At 14-0, the Indians are off to the best September start since the 1991 Minnesota Twins went 15-0.

                  EVEN STRONGER

As if the Indians needed any help, they expect to get All-Star reliever Andrew Miller back following his second stint on the disabled list with knee tendinitis. Cleveland pitching coach Mickey Callaway said the club hopes to have Miller pitch Thursday in a ''low leverage'' situation where he gets one out in an inning. From there, the Indians will give Miller a few days off and then steadily increase his workload to prepare him for the postseason. ''He feels great,'' Callaway said. ''We're very encouraged with everything so far.'' One of the majors' best late-inning pitchers, Miller is 4-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 48 games.

                  KING FELIX RETURNS

Felix Hernandez (5-4) is expected to come off the disabled list to make his first start for Seattle since July 31, when he also pitched at Texas. Hernandez is set to start the finale of a four-game series against the Rangers, but could be limited to about 50-60 pitches. This is the second time this season Hernandez has been on the DL because of right shoulder bursitis - he missed almost two months the other time. Hernandez is 19-23 with a 3.93 ERA in 52 career starts against Texas.

                  MARLINS TO MILWAUKEE

After wrapping up their series in Philadelphia, the Marlins will head to Milwaukee rather than back home. The team's three-game series starting Friday against the Brewers has been moved from Miami to Wisconsin as South Florida recovers from Hurricane Irma. Miami, which has lost four in a row and 14 of 16, will be the home team in Milwaukee - but the first game at Marlins Park since the storm will instead be Monday against the New York Mets. Marlins officials didn't want to strain the resources of police and fire rescue crews to work the Brewers games.

''All of our employees, as well as our entire community, have other needs that must take a priority,'' team president David Samson said in a statement.

Major League Baseball agreed the decision was in the best interests of South Florida, Samson said. The switch means three extra games at Miller Park for the Brewers, who are competing for a National League playoff berth.

''It works out certainly good for us,'' manager Craig Counsell said. ''I hope it turns out to be an advantage, I'm not going to lie to you.''

The series is the third in the majors to switch sites in recent weeks because of hurricanes.

The scheduling change means Miami's current trip will become a three-city, 10-game swing. In anticipation of Irma, family members accompanied the team on its trip, and they're expected to go to Milwaukee as well.

                  HOME RUN HAPPY

Philadelphia rookie Rhys Hoskins tries to go deep again when the Phillies host Miami. He hit his 17th homer in just his 33rd major league game Wednesday night. Hoskins, called up from the minors on Aug. 10, is the fastest player in big league history to get to 17 career homers. The previous record was 42 games by Wally Berger, an outfielder for the Boston Braves in 1930.

                    NFL trends for Week 2:

                    — Tampa Bay is 1-8 vs spread in last nine games as a home favorite.

                    — Oakland covered seven of last ten games when favored.

                    — 49ers are 5-10 vs spread in last 15 games as a road underdog.

                    — Minnesota Vikings are 13-6 in last 19 games as a road dog.

                    — Jets are 1-5-1 vs spread in last seven games as a road underdog.

                    — Green Bay covered just three of last 12 gamed when getting points on the road.

                    ****************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                    13) Houston Texans played terribly in their opener; now news that LB Brian Cushing is out for 10 weeks due to a PED suspension and things just got a little more depressing for the Texans.

                    12) Apparently the Denver Broncos lost interest in drafting Dak Prescott last year when he missed the flight to come visit the team after the NFL Combine. Prescott showed up later that night but you only get one chance to make a first impression. Denver drafted Paxton Lynch instead, a subplot to Sunday’s game at Mile High Stadium.

                    11) Marlins-Brewers series, scheduled for Miami this weekend, has been moved to Miller Park in Milwaukee as hurricane cleanup efforts continue in south Florida.

There is still no power at the Marlins’ TV studio in Miami.

                    10) Tuesday night in Philly, Giancarlo Stanton threw out a runner at second base, a runner at third base and another at home plate— that would’ve been the game-winning run. That was the first time an outfielder has thrown out runners and 2B, 3B and home in the same game since Dale Murphy of the Braves did it in 1991, also in Philadelphia.

                    9) The All-Star break isn’t the halfway mark of the season anymore; next year, the Orioles will play 98 games before the All-Star break. With the season starting in late March now to allow for four more off days per team, the halfway point in terms of games will be in June.

                    8) Cubs and Cardinals won’t like this; the All-Star break is four days for 28 teams, but these two teams play on Thursday, July 19, making their All-Star break only three days. That game will be the first of seven games in 11 days between Cubs/Cardinals.

All-Star Game is in Washington next summer.

                    7) Indians-Twins are playing a two-game series in Puerto Rico April 17-18. Figures to be a little warmer in San Juan than Minneapolis in April.

                    6) San Francisco Giants will open on the road in Los Angeles next year; it’ll be the 9th year in a row the Giants are opening the season on the road.

                    5) This guy Rhys Hoskins looks like the real deal for the Phillies; he has plate discipline, takes his walks and his power definitely plays in the Phillies’ small home ballpark. He is a keeper.

                    4) Dodger reliever Brandon Morrow appeared in his 39th game Tuesday night; if he appears in one more game, he nets himself a $250,000 bonus.

                    3) Indians 5, Tigers 3— Cleveland won its 21st straight game, but Detroit’s catcher/manager were both tossed in the 3rd inning for bitching about balls/strikes with plate umpire Quinn Wolcott, who had been squeezing pitcher Buck Farmer on balls/strikes early in the game.

Soon after play resumed after the ejections, new catcher John Hicks completely missed catching a Farmer pitch— the ball drilled Wolcott near the collarbone.

Immediately, Indians’ TV guys insinuated Hicks had missed the ball on purpose, so it would hit Wolcott. Only Hicks knows for sure.

                    2) They listed the attendance in Cleveland Wednesday as 29,346; looked a lot more crowded than that— people were still waiting outside to get in the ballpark in the second inning.

Their crowd of 24,000+ Tuesday night was disappointing, considering how great the Indians have been playing, but it seemed like Wednesday, everyone took the afternoon off from work and came out to the ballpark.

                    1) By the way, as an A’s fan, congrats to the Indians on this great streak. 2002 was so much fun for me, as the A’s found a way to win 20 games in a row at just about this same point of the season. Hope it translates to postseason success in Cleveland.

Maybe somebody will make a movie about them.
