  • MLB roundup: Diamondbacks sweep Dodgers
    September 1, 2017

PHOENIX -- Chris Iannetta and A.J. Pollock homered and Zack Greinke recorded his National League-leading 16th victory when the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep with an 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled in two runs off Kenta Maeda in the first inning, Iannetta hit a two-run homer in a three-run second inning and Pollock hit a two-run homer in the third as Arizona won its seventh straight game, tying a season high.

The Diamondbacks had seven homers and scored 21 runs in the series, the first time Los Angeles has been swept this season. The Dodgers have lost a season-high five straight.

Greinke (16-6) gave up four hits and one run in six innings while improving to 13-1 at home. He struck out six and walked two.

    Blue Jays 11, Orioles 8

BALTIMORE -- Kendrys Morales hit three home runs and set a career high with seven RBIs as Toronto snapped Baltimore's seven-game winning streak.

Morales' third homer in the eighth tied his career high and gave the Blue Jays an 11-6 lead. Marco Estrada (7-8) picked up the victory despite allowing six runs and 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Adam Jones and Chris Davis went deep for the Orioles, which broke the MLB record for home runs in August with 57. Baltimore's Jeremy Hellickson (2-3) tied a season high by allowing seven runs and seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

    Yankees 6, Red Sox 2

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia pitched six gritty innings and New York rebuffed Boston in the opener of a crucial four-game series.

Gary Sanchez drove in the first two runs with a single and his 28th homer for the Yankees, who are 4 1/2 games behind the Red Sox. Greg Bird added a two-run homer along with an RBI single while Didi Gregorius chipped in a run-scoring single.

Sabathia (11-5) improved to 4-0 this season against Boston and 8-0 after a New York defeat, getting the win after the Yankees were swept in a three-game series by Cleveland. Gary Sanchez hit his 28th home run of the season for New York.

    Cubs 6, Braves 2

CHICAGO -- Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs on five hits over an efficient 6 2/3 innings as Chicago won its fourth straight game.

The win was the second straight and fourth consecutive quality start as Hendricks (6-4) improved to 2-1 since returning from disabled list in late July. Jon Jay went 4-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored while Kris Bryant was 2-for-5 with a two-run home run.

In the wake of Wednesday's 8-for-10 performance during a doubleheader in Philadelphia, the Braves' Ender Inciarte was a more modest 1-for-4 with a double Thursday. Nick Markakis and Ozzie Albies each had two hits for Atlanta.

    Brewers 6, Nationals 3

MILWAUKEE -- Jonathan Villar homered for the second consecutive game and Zach Davies went seven innings for the second straight outing as Milwaukee topped Washington.

Davies (16-7) held the NL East-leading Nationals to a pair of runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four and has a 1.77 ERA over his last nine starts. Villar had two hits, his third straight with at least that many.

Trea Turner finished a home run shy of the cycle for Washington. Gio Gonzalez (13-6) had been dominant over the last month, going 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his last five starts but gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out seven in six innings.

    Astros 5, Rangers 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Derek Fisher delivered a two-run single to cap a three-run eighth inning as Houston salvaged the finale of the three-game series with Texas that was moved to Florida because of Hurricane Harvey.

The Astros' Chris Devenski (7-3), who pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, earned the victory after starter Collin McHugh couldn't finish the fifth. Ken Giles pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit or run to earn his 27th save.

The Rangers' Adrian Beltre left the game with a strained left hamstring in the seventh inning. Beltre, who got his 3,000th career hit last month, will undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

    Twins 5, White Sox 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Max Kepler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as Minnesota completed a two-run, ninth-inning comeback to defeat Chicago.

The White Sox's Alen Hanson hit a solo homer off Twins closer Matt Belisle in the top of the ninth to break a tie. Chicago closer Juan Minaya (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks as the White Sox lost for the fourth time in five games.

Belisle (1-2) surrendered the homer and a walk, while striking out three batters in a non-save situation. Minnesota won its fourth straight game and maintained its spot as the second wild-card team in the American League.

    Phillies 3, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- Ben Lively delivered a two-run single and pitched six strong innings as Philadelphia handed Miami its fourth straight loss.

The Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors in home runs with 51, went 0-for-5. Stanton, who struck out twice and popped out twice, is 1-for-15 this week.

The Phillies' Rhys Hoskins went 1-for-3 and became the first Philadelphia rookie to produce a 13-game hit streak in the first month of his major league career since Hall of Famer Chuck Klein in 1928.

    Reds 7, Mets 2

CINCINNATI -- Scooter Gennett smacked a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Joey Votto added a solo shot as Cincinnati captured the rubber match of their three-game series with New York.

Rookie Stuart Turner added an eighth-inning two-run shot and rookie Robert Stephenson (3-4) shook off getting plunked by a line drive to last a season-high six innings. Stephenson, who has won his last three starts, allowed two runs and struck out seven.

The Mets' Jacob deGrom (14-8) slipped to 2-5 in seven starts since he strung together eight consecutive wins. DeGrom allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

    • Friday’s six-pack

      — Celtics sent Cleveland a 2nd-round pick in 2020 to complete the Kyrie Irving trade, so that is official now.

      — All nine hitters who started for the Texas Rangers Wednesday night have 15+ homers.

      — Brandon Phillips banked a $500K bonus when he got traded to the Angels last night.

      — Angels moved Cameron Maybin to Houston today, then acquired Justin Upton from Detroit, before acquiring Phillips.

      — Florida Gators have 10 players suspended for its football season opener against Michigan that is being played in Dallas Saturday afternoon.

      — Ironic that Matt Harvey is pitching for the Mets in Houston Saturday, after Hurricane Harvey devastated Harris County and much of the gulf coast this week.

      ************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

      13) JJ Watt is a great American; his fundraising efforts for the people in Houston have gone over the $13M mark. He is setting an example for other public figures on how to deal with a tragedy.

      12) There are many images from Texas that are very sad, but the clip on the Interweb of the man playing the piano in his flooded home is just unspeakably sad. It is on CNN’s website and other places. You wonder how long it’ll take for these people’s lives to return to some kind of normalcy.

      11) Astros acquired Justin Verlander from Detroit last night for three minor leaguers. Houston desperately needed a top-flight starting pitcher.

      10) Ohio State 49, Indiana 21- Hoosiers led 21-20 in third quarter, before reality set in.

Indiana fired Lee Corso as its football coach after the 1982 season; last night was the first time since then that coach Corso saw the Hoosiers play in person.

      9) Milwaukee’s Keon Broxton made a game-ending, HR-robbing catch over the CF fence to end the Brewers’ 6-5 win over St Louis Wednesday. If Milwaukee makes the playoffs, that catch is going to be a big reason why.

      7) Joey Votto recently walked eight times in two games, making him only the second player since 1984 to do that— Bryce Harper is the other.

      6) San Jose State basketball transfer Brandon Clarke (17 pts, 8 reb/game LY) bolts to Gonzaga, because nowaways, thats where all the transfers on the west coast go. Gonzaga or Nevada.

      5) White Sox traded P Miguel Gonzalez to Texas last night.

      4) Blue Jays 11, Orioles 8— Kendrys Morales hit three homers for Toronto.

      3) I’m surprised/disappointed that Jeff Fisher hasn’t surfaced as a TV analyst. He doesn’t need the money but would be curious to hear what he has to say.

      2) There are already 1,855 entries to this year’s SuperContest at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; the previous record for entries was 1,854, set last year. Deadline is September 9, so it is likely that first place this season will be over $1M.

      1) RIP to coach Rollie Massimino 82, who won the last college basketball game played without a shot clock, Villanova’s upset of Georgetown in the 1985 national title game.

      • MLB notebook: Angels land All-Star OF Upton from Tigers
        August 31, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Justin Upton from the Detroit Tigers on Thursday ahead of the waiver trade deadline, Jon Morosi of MLB Network and FOX Sports reported.

The Tigers will receive right-hander Grayson Long and a low-level player to be named later in the deal, per Morosi. The Angels also will reportedly receive cash to cover part of Upton's 2017 salary.

Additionally, the Angels announced that outfielder Cameron Maybin was awarded to the Houston Astros on a waiver claim.

Upton, 30, is a four-time All-Star in his 11th major league season. He is batting .279 with 28 home runs and 94 RBIs through 125 games this year.

--Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre exited the series finale against the Houston Astros with a left hamstring injury and will undergo an MRI exam on Friday.

"It's not good," Beltre told reporters after Thursday's game when asked about his pain level.

Beltre had fielded a ground ball in the seventh inning and was about to make the throw to first when he pulled up quickly, resulting in an infield single. Manager Jeff Banister would only say that Beltre was in enough pain to leave the game and didn't want to speculate on anything more than that.

--The New York Yankees acquired minor league catcher Erik Kratz from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations.

The 37-year-old Kratz is batting .270 with 13 homers and 37 RBIs at Triple-A Columbus.

New York also recalled right-hander Giovanny Gallegos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gallegos, 26, went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 10 relief appearances with the Yankees this season, and has a 4-2 mark and 2.08 ERA in 28 Triple-A appearances.

--The Cincinnati Reds placed Tucker Barnhart on the three-day paternity list and recalled fellow catcher Chad Wallach from Triple-A Louisville.

Barnhart had just returned to action on Tuesday and played in Wednesday's game. The 26-year-old is batting .265 with five homers and 33 RBIs in 99 games this season.

Wallach, 25, started for the Reds on Sunday and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout before returning to Louisville.

        • LEADING OFF: Kershaw back, 2 banned Yankees catchers appeal
          August 31, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

          HE'S BACK

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw makes his much-anticipated return to the rotation when he starts at San Diego. The lefty has been out since July 23 because of a bad back. Kershaw is 15-2 with a 2.04 ERA for the runaway NL West leaders. Los Angeles has the best record in the majors despite a season-worst five-game losing streak.

          HEAR THIS

Yankees catchers Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine are expected to have their appeals heard, hoping Major League Baseball will cut their suspensions. Sanchez was penalized four games and Romine got two games after a fight-filled afternoon at Detroit.

As insurance in case they lose both players, the Yankees acquired catcher Erik Kratz from Cleveland for cash Thursday as they opened a four-game series against AL East-leading Boston. The 37-year-old Kratz was hitting .270 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs for Triple-A Columbus. He has played in the majors for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Toronto, Kansas City and Houston.

          HELPING HAND

The Mets plan to spend their day off in Houston assisting recovery efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Astros will play at home for the first time since the storm when they host New York in a doubleheader Saturday - Major League Baseball altered the schedule, moving back the series opener by a day.

''One of the things we talked about yesterday as a team: It's not a publicity stunt,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''We don't want any cameras. We just want to go and help out. The stuff that these guys are going to do and that I'm going to do is pretty much an individual thing. We'll just see what we can do when we get there.''

          CALLING HIS NUMBER

Marlins lefty Dillon Peters will be activated from Double-A Jacksonville to make his major league debut vs. the visiting Phillies. Peters, who missed two months of the season with a broken thumb, will wear No. 76. ''That was my spring training number,'' he said. ''As long as I have a number, I'm OK with it.''

          COUNTING UP

Philadelphia rookie Rhys Hoskins takes a 13-game hitting streak into the matchup at Miami. That's the longest string by a Phillies player in the first month of his career since Hall of Famer Chuck Klein had a 13-gamer in 1928.

          • Angels acquire 2B Phillips from Braves
            September 1, 2017

One day after achieving a career milestone with his 2,000th hit, infielder Brandon Phillips was traded by the Atlanta Braves to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.

Phillips was scratched from the Braves' lineup against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night before the deal went through. He will be eligible for the Angels' postseason roster if Los Angeles makes it.

The Angels shipped Triple-A catcher Tony Sanchez to the Braves as part of the transaction and received cash considerations.

The Phillips deal was the second trade of the day for the Angels (69-65), who earlier acquired four-time All-Star outfielder Justin Upton from the Detroit Tigers.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Angels transferred right-hander Andrew Bailey to the 60-day disabled list. Bailey is out for the season due to a right shoulder strain.

The 36-year-old Phillips, a four-time Gold Glove winner and three-time All-Star, is expected to take over at second base for the Angels. The veteran is hitting .291 with 11 home runs, 52 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 120 games this season.

The Braves acquired Phillips before the 2017 season from the Cincinnati Reds.

Phillips is only the fifth player in major league history whose primary position is second base with at least 2,000 hits, 200 home runs and 200 stolen bases. The others are Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio, Joe Morgan and Ryne Sandberg.

In 1,869 major league games, Phillips has a career .276 batting average with 998 runs, 208 homers, 941 RBIs and 208 stolen bases.

Sanchez, 29, joined the Angels as a minor league free agent on Nov. 2 and has spent the season with Triple-A Salt Lake. In 70 games for the Bees, he hit .272 with four home runs and 40 RBIs.

Astros acquire Verlander to bolster rotation
            September 1, 2017

The Tigers dealt a franchise icon while the first-place Astros boosted their postseason prospects when veteran ace Justin Verlander was traded from Detroit to Houston on Thursday night.

The Astros sent right-handed pitcher Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers to Detroit for Verlander, a 34-year-old right-hander.

The teams reportedly completed the deal seconds before the 11:59 ET trade deadline, meaning Verlander will be eligible for postseason play.

Verlander, who is making $28 million this season and in 2018-19 with a $22 million vesting option for 2020, has a 183-114 record with a 3.49 ERA and 2,373 strikeouts in 13 major league seasons, all with Detroit.

A six-time All-Star, Verlander was selected the AL Most Valuable Player and unanimously voted the AL Cy Young Award winner in 2011. He was also named the AL Rookie of the Year in 2006.

"We get him for two more years on his contract," Astros owner Jim Crane told Fox 26. "We got a really good team intact for the next few years. We think it's a big boost for the team and the city. We're excited about it. We're always trying to improve the team. It's like a Carlos Beltran. (Verlander) can add a dimension we don't have. We're trying to win. If we get a shot to win, we're going to lean in."

This season, Verlander is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA and 176 strikeouts.

"On behalf of the Detroit Tigers, we sincerely thank Justin Verlander for his remarkable 13 seasons of dedication to the organization," Tigers general manager Al Avila said. "Justin has been the face of consistency over the course of his career, and a pillar for baseball in the City of Detroit. He is someone who I believe to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. We wish Justin all the best as he starts a new chapter in his illustrious career. ...

"We're thrilled to get three great prospects from one of the highest ranked farm systems in baseball. All three players are outstanding athletes, and they greatly bolster our minor league system."

Perez, 19, is ranked as the 32nd-best prospect in baseball and the second-best prospect in the Astros organization according to Baseball America and the 46th-best prospect in baseball and the third-best prospect in the Houston system by MLB Pipeline.

"Perez was the headliner for us, cementing himself as a dominant force in each of his three years in professional baseball," Avila said.

Cameron, 20, is rated as the ninth-best prospect in the Astros organization by MLB Pipeline. The center fielder has spent the entire 2017 season with Class A Quad Cities and is hitting .271 with 79 runs, 29 doubles, eight triples, 14 home runs, 73 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.

He is the son of former major-league Mike Cameron.

"Daz Cameron is someone that we view as one of the highest-ceiling players in the minors," Avila said. "Cameron is a guy that slipped in the draft because of signability concerns, but has always shown flashes of his dad's play."

Rogers, 22, is ranked as the 11th-best prospect in the Astros system by MLB Pipeline. In his first full season in professional baseball, Rogers has played in 110 games in Class A ball, hitting .263 with 60 runs, 25 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs and 70 RBIs.

"Rogers plays beyond his years, demonstrating solid pop in his bat while having above average plate discipline, and our scouts have him rated as a reliable receiver behind the plate with an above average arm," Avila said.

Rangers acquire right-handed starter Gonzalez from White Sox
            September 1, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The Texas Rangers have acquired right-handed starter Miguel Gonzalez from the Chicago White Sox for a minor league infielder.

Texas made the deal Thursday night, adding a veteran starter to bolster the staff. The Rangers (66-67) were four games behind the second wild card spot with 29 games left.

Gonzalez is 7-10 with a 4.31 ERA in 22 starts this season. The 33-year-old righty was 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA in last five Chicago starts, including a no-decision earlier Thursday when he allowed three runs over six innings in the White Sox's 5-4 loss to Minnesota.

The Rangers sent minor league infielder Ti'Quan Forbes to Chicago, and made room on their 40-man roster when right-hander Anthony Bass was designated for assignment

              • September Pitchers Report
                August 31, 2017

Much like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate September, the final month of the season.

And as College Football and the NFL crash onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

                Check it out.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list.

                Enjoy the games.

                GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

                Hendricks, Kyle - 10-3 (5-1 A)

The Cubs right-hander has been steadily dropping his ERA and if Chicago is indeed going to win the NL Central, they will need Hendricks to be a big factor.

                *Jimenez, Ubaldo - 10-2 (7-1 H)

It seems like a miracle Jimenez can ever win. His oversized ERA only tells you how little starting pitching Baltimore has in their farm system. Maybe the Orioles will score a lot of runs at home like they have in the past for him.

                *Kershaw, Clayton - 13-2 (8-1 A)

Kershaw is back off the DL and you know the Dodgers are hopeful he stays healthy until early November. He was 15-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his previous fifteen-team starts before being sidelined the third week in July.

                Liriano, Francisco - 10-4 (4-1 H)

Liriano has been relegated to one inning relief duty for Houston and would only start if truly needed.

                *Price, David - 14-2 (8-0 H)

Price has been working at the end of August on throwing from distances of 105 to 120 feet. After that Price starts mixing in breaking balls on a flat surface from 60 feet and six inches before he can graduate to the mound. The timetable is still this month for his return.

                Strasburg, Stephen - 7-3 (3-0 A)

Strasburg has looked good since returning from injury last month. Much like Kershaw, if Washington is going to win in September and October, he has to be electric.

                Verlander, Justin - 11-5 (6-2 H)

For a second straight season Verlander, after a mediocre first half, become a force in the second portion of the season. Expect this competitive right-hander to give his all even on a rotten Detroit club.

                *Zimmermann, Jordan - 8-4 (4-1 A)

Don't expect Zimmermann to duplicate his numbers of the past this month. With an ERA over 6, allowing 1.24 hits per inning and already close to 30 homers surrendered, not sure where he becomes a force again.

                BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

                Archer, Chris - 5-10 (3-6 H)

All the talent is there, it's just that Archer has never put it all together. Granted, he's been on average at best clubs, yet given his ability and numbers, at 27, he should be overcoming mental lapses.

                Hammel, Jason - 4-9 (1-5 A)

Pretty much a five-inning starter who falls off the cliff in hurry when the sixth rolls around, even if he is going well. It has been years since Hammel pitched well in the second half of a season.

                *Leake, Mike - 4-12 (1-8 A)

On June 30th, Leake had an ERA of 2.97. Now he's starts September at 4.25. His problem, not missing bats, giving up an unfathomable 1.6 base hits an inning. Look for more of the same in September.

                Nelson, Jimmy - 3-9 (1-4 A)

Over his career, Nelson has shown a tendency to wear down in the second half. The way he's trending since the All-Star break, it looks like deja vu all over again.

                *Sale, Chris - 3-11 (1-7 A)

This season Sale has been outstanding against every team but Cleveland. Now on a strong club and having to pitch meaning contests late in the year, let's see if he does a better job. Note: Sale's White Sox teams had a 7-18 record in his September starts.

SAN DIEGO (AP) Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was sharp in his first start in five weeks, pitching two-hit ball for six innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Diego 1-0 Friday night to snap their season-high five-game losing streak.

Kershaw (16-2) hadn't started since July 23, when he was pulled after two innings with a strained lower back that landed him on the disabled list.

The lefty won his career-best 12th straight decision, striking out seven and walking none.

Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 36th save. The Dodgers, who have the majors' best record at 92-41, snapped their longest losing streak since April 2016.

Chase Utley hit an RBI single in the sixth off rookie Dinelson Lamet (7-6).

The AL Central-leading Indians won the opener on Francisco Lindor's tiebreaking single in the ninth inning.

Roberto Perez homered and drove in three runs to back Clevinger (8-5).

Clevinger allowed three hits, struck out six and walked one. Buck Farmer (3-2) took the loss.

The opener was tied at 2 in the ninth when pinch-hitter Jay Bruce tripled with one out off Shane Greene (3-3). Lindor singled through the drawn-in infield.

The Tigers loaded the bases with two out in the ninth inning against closer Cody Allen (2-6), who had allowed the tying run in the eighth. Joe Smith took over and retired Miguel Cabrera on a line drive to Lindor at shortstop for his first save.

Fister (4-7) gave up doubles by Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge to begin the first inning, and little else. He allowed four hits, struck out five and walked one.

Sonny Gray (8-9) gave up all three homers.

It was the eighth win in nine games for the Orioles, a surge that's put them just 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the top AL wild card.

Machado led off the 13th with an infield hit off Aaron Loup (2-3) and Schoop followed with a liner to right-center.

Lackey (11-10) allowed three hits, struck out five and walked none while improving to 6-1 with a 3.83 ERA in nine starts since the All-Star break. The 38-year-old righty retired his last 16 batters.

Pedro Strop and Brian Duensing worked the eighth before Wade Davis finished the four-hitter for his 28th save in 28 chances.

Anthony Rizzo added two more hits as NL Central-leading Chicago won for the 11th time in its last 14 games. He batted .355 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in August, powering the Cubs to a 17-12 record and a major league-best 191 runs for the month.

Atlanta lost for the fifth time in seven games, wasting a solid start by Mike Foltynewicz (10-11).

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mike Moustakas homered for the first time since mid-August, Brandon Moss also went deep and Kansas City held off Minnesota.

The Twins had won four in a row. They remain one game behind New York for the top AL wild-card spot.

Melky Cabrera tied a season-high with four hits for the Royals, who won for just the second time in eight games.

Kelvin Herrera allowed a two-run single to Joe Mauer in the ninth, but Scott Alexander struck out Eddie Rosario with the bases loaded for his second save.

Asher Wojciechowski (4-3) earned the win in relief after moving to the bullpen from the rotation. He pitched two scoreless innings. He is 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 10 relief appearances this season.

Gerrit Cole (11-9) was touched for five earned runs and six hits in six innings after pitching five innings in a 1-0 victory over the Reds in his last start.

                            RANGERS 10, ANGELS 9

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carlos Gomez scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and Texas moved up in the AL wild-card race, holding off Los Angeles.

The matchup took 4 hours, 33 minutes, setting franchise records for both teams as the longest nine-inning game in club history.

The Rangers stopped the Angels' three-game winning streak and closed within three games of Minnesota for the second wild-card spot. Los Angeles is 1 + games behind the Twins.

The Angels loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Alex Claudio (4-1) retired Eric Young Jr. on a grounder. Young had entered in the eighth as a pinch-runner for Albert Pujols, who had four hits and drove in four runs.

Walker (8-7) lasted only five innings due to a high pitch count. Kyle Freeland (11-9) took the loss.

                            MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Mike Leake overcame a shaky beginning to throw seven innings in his Seattle debut, and the Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Oakland.

Acquired from St. Louis earlier in the week, Leake gave the Mariners the kind of performance they desperately needed to remain on the fringe of the AL wild-card race. Leake (1-0), who was 7-12 with St. Louis, allowed two runs in the first inning, but held the A's scoreless the rest of the way.

Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Snell (3-6) allowed one unearned run and induced three double plays in 6 2/3 innings. Alex Colome got the final three outs for his major league-leading 41st save in 46 opportunities.

Reynaldo Lopez (0-2) allowed three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. The White Sox have lost four in a row.

                            • MLB notebook: Rangers' Beltre out at least four weeks
                              September 1, 2017

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre could miss the rest of the regular season due to a hamstring injury that will sideline him at least four weeks.

The 38-year-old Beltre was injured while fielding a ball during Thursday's loss to the Houston Astros. An MRI exam conducted Friday showed that Beltre suffered a Grade 2 strain.

The Rangers have 29 games remaining in the regular season entering Friday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels. Slugger Joey Gallo is starting Friday's game at third base.

Beltre is batting .315 with 16 homers and 66 RBIs in 80 games.

Texas recalled third baseman Will Middlebrooks from Triple-A Round Rock to help plug the hole at third base.

--Michael Fulmer, Detroit's de facto pitching ace with the departure of Justin Verlander, will miss at least two starts with a recurrence of numbness in his pitching fingers.

Fulmer, a right-hander, is scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews next week, ostensibly to determine whether surgery is needed to correct his ulnar nerve. Inflammation around the nerve placed Fulmer on the disabled list in August but tests showed no structural damage at that time.

--The New York Yankees reinstated designated hitter Matt Holliday from the 10-day disabled list.

A lower back strain sent Holliday to the disabled list on Aug. 6. He began a rehab assignment on Aug. 18 in Tampa and recently played for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Holliday, 37, was first sidelined on June 28 with a viral infection. Since his return after the All-Star break, he hit just .136 (11-for-81) with one home run and two doubles.

                              • LEADING OFF: Astros home for 1st time since Hurricane Harvey
                                September 1, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                HOMECOMING

The Houston Astros play their first game at Minute Maid Park since Hurricane Harvey caused massive flooding. The AL West leaders had a home series earlier this week against Texas relocated to Tampa Bay's stadium because of the devastation.

There will be a moment of silence before the Astros host the New York Mets in the opener of a day-night doubleheader, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is set to throw out the first ball. The Astros have donated 5,000 tickets to each of the three games this weekend, to be donated to city shelters, first responders and volunteers. Canned food will be collected at two ballpark gates.

                                STREAKING

The AL Central-leading Indians try for their 10th straight win when ace Corey Kluber (13-4, 2.63 ERA) faces the Tigers at Comerica Park. Jordan Zimmermann goes for Detroit - he is 0-3 with an 11.42 ERA in four career starts against Cleveland.

                                ROLLING

Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz (14-4) has won a career-best eight consecutive decisions. He is 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA in four starts against New York this season going into the outing at Yankee Stadium. He'll be opposed by Masahiro Tanaka, who has won both of his starts since returning from the disabled list.

                                SLOWED UP

Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton is 1 for 17 this week - the lone hit was his major league-leading 51st home run. He went 0 for 2 with two walks against the Phillies on Friday night as the Marlins lost their fifth in a row.

                                WELCOME

Outfielder Leonys Martin is expected to join the NL Central-leading Cubs for their game at Wrigley Field against Atlanta. Chicago got him in a trade with Seattle on Thursday night. The 29-year-old Martin was hitting just .174 with six steals in 34 games. He has twice stolen over 30 bases in a season.
