BALTIMORE (AP) Astros rookie Yuli Gurriel had a career-high four hits, including a home run, and Houston received a gritty pitching performance from Mike Fiers in an 8-7 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

Colin Moran hit his first major league homer and first triple for Houston, and Brian McCann also went deep.

The Astros took an 8-2 lead into the ninth before Adam Jones hit a two-run double off James Hoyt, and Jonathan Schoop homered with two on against Chris Devenski.

After Chris Davis was thrown out trying to bunt against the shift, Ken Giles struck out Mark Trumbo to earn his 21st save.

Working in 90-degree temperatures on a steamy night at Camden Yards, Fiers (7-4) threw 105 pitches over seven innings. The right-hander struck out nine, including Jones three times, and allowed one run.

Coming off a four-game sweep of Texas, the Orioles hoped to continue their surge against baseball's other team from the Lone Star State. Instead, Baltimore fell behind 5-0 in the second inning and dropped four games under .500.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-6) gave up six runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Houston finished with 16 hits, at least one from every starter.

      CARDINALS 11, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Paul DeJong hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in St. Louis' nine-run eighth inning, and the Cardinals cooled off Chicago.

The Cubs carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth, looking for their seventh consecutive win. But St. Louis sent 14 batters to the plate in its highest-scoring inning of the season, taking advantage of a combined six walks by three relievers while improving to 4-4 since the All-Star break.

Carl Edwards Jr. (3-2) was pulled after the first three batters reached. Hector Rondon then walked Jedd Gyorko, tying it at 3, and DeJong followed with a drive into the ivy in right-center for a ground-rule double.

Carson Kelly hit a two-run double in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Tommy Pham's two-run single made it 11-3 as 11 consecutive batters reached safely to begin the inning.

Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer for Chicago, and Jake Arrieta pitched six effective innings. Third baseman Kris Bryant sat out with a sprained left little finger.

Randal Grichuk homered for the Cardinals in his return from a lower back injury. Matt Bowman (2-3) got the final out of the seventh.

      PIRATES 13, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Pittsburgh rookie Josh Bell had a career-high four hits, Andrew McCutchen had three hits and reached base five times, and the surging Pirates beat Colorado.

Rookie starter Trevor Williams (4-4) overcame a rough first to pitch 6 2/3 solid innings for his first win in more than a month. Pittsburgh has won a season-best six straight and 12 of 14 to move a game above .500 for the first time since opening 3-2.

The Pirates (49-48), who tied a season high with 18 hits, are within two games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Pittsburgh jumped on Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman (6-2) and chased him three batters into the fourth. Bell had an RBI single in the first and a three-run double in the second to finish with a season-high four RBIs.

      ROYALS 7, WHITE SOX 6, 10 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Whit Merrifield's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted Kansas City over skidding Chicago.

Merrifield's game-ending fly scored Alcides Escobar, who led off the inning with a single.

The Royals, who trailed 5-1 after two innings, got their third walk-off victory in five days. The White Sox have lost seven straight and 10 of 11.

Alex Gordon had three hits and drove in three Royals runs, while Merrifield also had a two-run double in the fourth. Mike Moustakas hit his 26th home run.

Neftali Feliz (1-0), the seventh Kansas City pitcher, threw seven pitches in a scoreless 10th.

Tyler Clippard (1-6), acquired in a trade Tuesday with the New York Yankees, took the loss in his White Sox debut. Top prospect Yoan Moncada had four RBIs in his second game with Chicago, including a bases-loaded triple.

      PHILLIES 6, BREWERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola tied a career high with nine strikeouts in seven sharp innings, Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer and Philadelphia beat reeling Milwaukee.

Nola (7-6) allowed one run and five hits. He has six straight quality starts, going 4-1 and lowering his ERA from 4.76 to 3.38 in that span.

The NL Central-leading Brewers have lost six in a row and their lead over the World Series champion Cubs is only one game.

The Phillies have won three straight for only the third time this season but still have the worst record in the majors.

Brewers starter Matt Garza (4-5) gave up two runs and three hits in five innings.

      INDIANS 13, BLUE JAYS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs against his former team, and Cleveland broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning to pull away from Toronto.

Encarnacion, who played the last six seasons with the Blue Jays before signing a three-year, $60 million contract with Cleveland in January, hit a leadoff homer in the second, broke a 3-all tie in the fifth with a two-run double and added an RBI single in the seventh.

Abraham Almonte hit a three-run homer and rookie Bradley Zimmer added a two-run single in the seventh as the Indians won for just the second time in eight games.

Trevor Bauer (8-8) allowed three runs in five innings following a dreadful outing in his previous start.

Marco Estrada (4-7) gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings and hasn't won since May 27.

      METS 7, ATHLETICS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Conforto hit a pair of two-run homers and Jerry Blevins rescued the Mets' bullpen with a five-out save as New York held off Oakland for its third straight victory.

T.J. Rivera put the Mets ahead in the sixth inning with a two-run single that turned into a Little League home run. Rivera came all the way around to score on the play after third baseman Matt Chapman, trying to get Rivera at second, threw the ball away into right field for a costly error that made it 5-3.

Conforto's second homer made it 7-3 in the seventh. Oakland rallied for two in the eighth, but Blevins replaced closer Addison Reed with the bases loaded and got five straight outs against his former team for his fifth major league save and first this season.

Blevins went at least 1 2/3 innings in a game for the first time since 2014 with Washington. He retired All-Star slugger Yonder Alonso on a foul popup and struck out Khris Davis to escape the eighth-inning jam.

Yoenis Cespedes had three hits and Hansel Robles (5-1) struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Marcus Semien had four hits and two RBIs for the Athletics. Rookie starter Paul Blackburn (1-1) gave up four runs over 5 1/3 innings.

      RANGERS 4, RAYS 3, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Elvis Andrus homered early and snapped a 10th-inning tie with a two-out infield single that gave struggling Texas a comeback victory over Tampa Bay.

Andrus hit a sharp grounder off Brad Boxberger (2-1) that forced Evan Longoria to make a diving stop. Pinch-runner Delino DeShields scored when the third baseman was unable to complete the throw to first base.

Alex Claudio (2-0) pitched two innings in relief of Yu Darvish to help the Rangers stop a five-game skid.

Rays starter Alex Cobb took a three-hitter and a 3-1 lead into the ninth, but couldn't finish off the Rangers, who erased their deficit with Joey Gallo's double and Shin-Soo Choo's 14th homer within a three-pitch span.

Darvish struck out 12 over eight innings but allowed solo homers to Brad Miller, Corey Dickerson and Mallex Smith.

      TIGERS 6, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Victor Martinez hit two homers and Detroit topped Minnesota.

Anibal Sanchez (2-0) gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Tigers, who lost star slugger Miguel Cabrera to a bruised right clavicle in the fourth. Cabrera had X-rays that were negative and he is day to day.

Justin Wilson pitched the ninth for his 11th save. The Tigers are 14-1 in their last 15 games at Target Field.

All-Star Ervin Santana (11-7) had his shortest outing of the season for the Twins. He gave up five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Minnesota fell 1 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

      MARLINS 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Urena pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, Christian Yelich drove in two runs and Miami opened a six-game road trip with a rain-delayed victory over Cincinnati.

The Reds managed just four hits while falling to 1-7 on their 10-game homestand. The Marlins were coming off a 1-5 homestand.

After the start was delayed nearly two hours, Urena (8-4) allowed one run and struck out four. He and three relievers limited the Reds to one extra-base hit: Scooter Gennett's double.

AJ Ramos worked the ninth for his 18th save.

Homer Bailey (2-4) turned in five shutout innings after Miami scored two in the first.

      • MLB notebook: Cubs 3B Bryant sits out vs. Cards
        July 21, 2017

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was not in the lineup with a finger injury for Friday afternoon's game and could miss this weekend's series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bryant sprained his little finger on his left hand in a headfirst slide in the first inning of Chicago's 8-2 victory against the Braves at Atlanta on Wednesday.

X-rays were negative but the 25-year-old Bryant is still experiencing soreness while gripping the bat.

"We're going to do this as a day-by-day thing," manager Joe Maddon told reporters before Friday's game. "I really don't know. If I had to guess, probably not tomorrow too and possibly on Sunday. But I really don't know. He healed well with the ankle, we did not expect that to come back very quickly and it did. So I'm just trying to not jump to conclusions right now. It's sore. It's just a soreness and he's got to grip the bat, and that's what it really comes down to."

--The Cardinals activated left-handed reliever Zach Duke and outfielder Randal Grichuk from the disabled list prior to opening a three-game series against the Cubs.

Duke made his season debut in the 11-4 win after undergoing Tommy John surgery during the offseason. He missed all of spring training and pitched nine scoreless innings in nine rehab appearances.

Grichuk was activated after being out since July 10 with a lower back injury. He appeared in a rehab game with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday and was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.

Besides activating Duke and Grichuk, St. Louis also optioned right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis and outfielder Magneuris Sierra to Springfield. St. Louis also recalled catcher Carson Kelly from Memphis and designated backup catcher Eric Fryer for assignment.

--The Cleveland Indians placed left-handed reliever Boone Logan on the 10-day disabled list with a left lat muscle strain.

Logan, 32, is out indefinitely, the team announced. The move is retroactive to July 20.

Logan suffered the injury when he threw ball four to Brandon Belt in the eighth inning on Wednesday afternoon in the San Francisco Giants' 5-4 win. It sent the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Logan to his knee after he released the ball.

"When the ball came out of my hand I felt it pull in the upper lat area," Logan said after the game.

--The Oakland Athletics signed first baseman Chris Carter to a minor league contract, the team announced.

Carter, 30, was assigned to Triple-A Nashville. He was released by the New York Yankees on July 11. He signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with New York in February.

Carter hit just .201 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs in 62 games with the Yankees, who twice designated him for assignment. He was initially designated on June 24 and again on July 5.

Carter previously spent five years in the Oakland organization after originally being acquired in December 2007 from Arizona in an eight-player trade. He spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the A's (2010-12), appearing in 106 games and hitting 19 homers.

--The Seattle Mariners acquired left-hander Marco Gonzales from the Cardinals in exchange for minor league outfielder Tyler O'Neill, the teams announced.

Gonzales, 25, appeared in parts of three major league seasons (2014, 2015, 2017) with the Cardinals, compiling a 4-2 record with a 5.53 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in 12 games (seven starts).

Gonzales also appeared in three games in the 2014 division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA over three innings. In addition, he made three appearances in the 2014 ALCS against the San Francisco Giants and was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA over three innings.

O'Neill, 22, hit .244 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs in 93 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season.

        • LEADING OFF: Trout vs Price; JD in desert; Wrigley rivalry
          July 21, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

          ONE ON ONE

Angels star Mike Trout takes on Boston lefty David Price (5-2) and the first-place Red Sox. Price is coming off an outstanding start Sunday night, when he struck out eight in eight innings of a 3-0 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park. Price is 3-0 in his last four outings.

          WELCOME TO THE DESERT

New outfielder J.D. Martinez hopes to make his first home start for the Diamondbacks when they host NL East-leading Washington. Acquired in a trade with Detroit this week, Martinez was hit on the left hand by a pitch Wednesday in Cincinnati, his first game with Arizona. ''Definitely a scary situation. I was already nervous as it was for the day,'' the slugger said. X-rays were negative and Martinez was available off the bench Friday night against the Nationals. First, he got a little lost on his way to the ballpark and found himself looking at his phone for directions.

          SHOWDOWN AT WRIGLEY

Longtime rivals square off in Chicago when Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright (11-5, 5.08 ERA) faces Cubs lefty Jon Lester (6-6, 4.07). Wainwright is 4-0 with a 4.18 ERA in his last four starts. Lester pitched seven crisp innings Monday in a 4-3 victory at Atlanta. Chicago third baseman Kris Bryant, last year's NL MVP, could miss the entire series with a finger injury. Bryant sprained his left little finger on a headfirst slide Wednesday. X-rays were negative, but Bryant is experiencing soreness and there is some concern about his ability to grip a bat.

          SEASON DEBUT

Collin McHugh comes off the disabled list to make his first start of the year for AL-leading Houston at Baltimore. McHugh, who is 43-26 with the Astros from 2014-16, has been sidelined all season with an elbow injury. Joe Musgrove will move to the bullpen to make room for McHugh in the rotation.

          BACK ON THE MOUND

Cleveland right-hander Danny Salazar, who hasn't pitched since June 3 because of a sore right shoulder, will be activated from the DL to start against Marcus Stroman (9-5) and Toronto. Salazar, an All-Star last year, is 3-5 with a 5.40 ERA in 12 games this season, including 10 starts. Indians ace Corey Kluber is expected to start Sunday against the Blue Jays after his scheduled outing Friday was pushed back because of a stiff neck. Kluber missed a month earlier this season with a back injury.

          • Saturday’s six-pack

            — Braves 12, Dodgers 3— Pitcher Jaime Garcia hit a grand slam for Atlanta, the first one by a visiting pitcher at Dodger Stadium since Steve Carlton, in 1984.

            — St Louis dealt P Marco Gonzales to Seattle for OF prospect Tyler O’Neill.

            — Cardinals’ P Carlos Martinez pitched Friday with green hair.

            — Dodgers’ utility guy Austin Barnes is the nephew of former A’s 2B Mike Gallego.

            — Zack Cosart’s hit in the All-Star Game ended an 0-25 skid by Cincinnati players in the Mid-summer Classic.

            — John Wall cashes in with the Wizards: four years, $170M.

            **************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day……..

            13) Golden State Warriors are going to rip off season ticket holders by making them buy a PSL, which is forcing fans to pay a hefty fee for the right to buy season tickets for even more money in their new arena.

This is prevalent in the NFL but has never been done in the NBA before. This is a scummy way to treat a fanbase that was loyal to the Warriors, even before they were really good.

            12) Kyrie Irving is set to make $20M a year over the next three years; recently, he told the Cavaliers he wants to be traded, preferably to the Knicks, Spurs, Heat or Timberwolves. I’m surprised he doesn’t want to play for the Warriors.

Who doesn’t want to be Lebron’s wingman?

Some information about the first game of a series or home/road trips…….
            11) Over is 11-4-2 in Dodger series openers, 12-5 in San Diego series openers, 10-4-1 in Detroit’s.

            Under is 10-5 in Cincinnati’s series openers, 12-3 in Cleveland’s, 10-5 in Baltimore’s.

            10) Astros are 11-3 in the first game of a road series, only 8-8 in home series openers.

            9) Washington is 21-11 in series openers, Colorado 21-10, the Dodgers 20-12.

Phillies are 10-21 in series openers, Pirates 12-19, St Louis 13-18, White Sox 10-20, Angels 12-19, Oakland 12-18.

            8) A popular word the last year or two is “process.” Front office types now always say “It is a process” as a general way of saying nothing about what they actually do.

            7) Madison Bumgarner makes $12M a year; he missed 13-14 starts this year because he got hurt riding a dirt bike on a team’s off-day. Giants are 0-6 in his starts in 2017. Bumgarner has done an awful lot for the Giants in his career, but none of it has been this season.

            6) In Luis Severino’s last five starts, New York was outscored 10-0; they haven’t scored a run in the first five innings of any of his last five starts.

            5) Dodgers have an awesome lineup; their 7th/8th place hitters are Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig.

            4) Atlanta Braves’ TV announcer Chip Caray complained pretty loudly about the loud music at Dodger Stadium, calling it “ears bleeding loud”. He also said that the stadium is beautiful but doesn’t need the constant music/noise.

            3) Recruiting never stops: New Mexico added a 6-5 kid from Australia this week. Lobos’ new coach Paul Weir has lot of international connections and is a very good recruiter.

            2) I hope Sean Spicer puts his feet up and has a cold one tonight; he quit Friday as White House press secretary. In the history of man, no one looked as uncomfortable as Spicer did at the podium during press briefings- hopefully his next job will be a little more fun.

            1) There are lessons to be learned in life every day: our lesson from Hugh Freeze getting fired at Ole Miss is this: If your boss gives you a cellphone to use and you want to call an escort service, get your own phone and use that one, not the school’s phone.

This is how you keep your $5M a year job. Buy another phone.

                      • Saturday's Diamond Notes
                        July 22, 2017

Hottest team: Pirates (6-0 past six games, 12-2 past 14 overall)

The Bucs have rattled off six victories in a row, including a key four-game sweep of the first-place Brewers, to move into third place in the suddenly competitive National League Central. The Pirates are just two games back of the Brewers for the perch, and one game back of the defending World Champion Cubs. A big reason for Pittsburgh's success has been their pitching, as they have allowed just 2.79 runs per game over the past 14 outings. The Bucs are also a perfect 7-0 over their past seven games against teams with a winning record, and 5-0 in their past five against a right-handed starter. The win streak will be put to the test with Chad Kuhl on the hill in Coors Field against the Rockies. Pittsburgh is 3-7 over Kuhl's past 10 road outings and 0-4 in his past four vs. the NL West.

Coldest team: White Sox (0-7 past seven games, 1-10 past 11 overall)

It's really no surprise the White Sox are struggling, as they have traded away key pieces of their offense and bullpen to build for the future. The Chicago offense is scoring just 2.57 runs per game during their seven-game losing streak while allowing 6.0 runs per outing. That's obviously not a recipe for success, and should theybe in a close game they have a new closer who was very shaky for the Yankees before being acquired. Chicago has won just 10 of their past 35 on the road, two of their past 10 inside the division and just seven of their past 27 against teams with a winning overall record.

Hottest pitcher: Julio Teheran, Braves (6-0, 2.53 ERA over nine road starts)

Teheran enters with a .500 record overall, thanks mainly to a dismal 1-7 record with a 7.05 ERA over 52 1/3 innings across 10 starts at his new home of SunTrust Park. However, Teheran is pitching at All-Star caliber on the road, going 6-0 with a 2.53 ERA over 57 innings across nine starts with a .225 opponent batting average. The opposition is hitting .288 against him at home. While those road numbers are wonderful, this is the same guy who is 0-5 with a 5.50 ERA in six outings against the Dodgers since the start of the 2014 season.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (3-10, 5.81 ERA)

It seems like Moore has shown up on this list quite frequently this season. It's probably because the opposition is hitting a robust .301 against him this season and he has turned in a 1.64 WHIP across 105 1/3 innings over 19 starts. He hasn't won since June 20 in Atlanta, a span of five starts, and he has just that one victory since May 13. The Giants are just 2-8 over Moore's past 10 starts, 0-5 over his past five home starts and 0-5 in his previous five outings against National West foes.

Biggest UNDER run: Yankees (10-1 past 11 games overall)

Yankee games have been low scoring lately, with the 'under' hitting in 10 of their past 11 outings and eight straight outings on the road. The 'under' is also 5-1 over their past six against left-handed starting pitching, while going 3-1-1 in their past five against teams with a losing overall record. Masahiro Tanaka has been pitching better lately, too, and the 'under' has followed. The under is 5-1-1 over his past seven outings, 18-4 in his past 22 against American League West opponents and 5-0 in his past five encounters against the Mariners. The under is 20-8-1 in the past 29 meetings at Safeco Field and 34-16-4 over the past 54 meetings in this series.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (4-0 past four games, 9-3 past 12 overall)

The Orioles rolled up plenty of offense on the Rangers in their four-game early-week sweep, and the offense spilled over into Friday's loss against the Astros. While they suffered a loss Friday, they made a late run in the 8-7 loss to pull out the 'over' in the bottom of the ninth inning. Baltimore's offense is averaging 9.5 runs per game over the past four outings, and their pitching staff has allowed seven or more runs in five of the past eight contests. The under has been a frequent happening with Chris Tillman on the hill, however, going 7-2-1 over his past 10 at Camden Yards. The over is 4-1-1 in his past six against teams with a winning overall record, however.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Red Sox

The Red Sox roll into Saturday's outing with a 5-2 mark over David Price's past seven starts, and 6-2 across his past eight against teams with a losing overall mark. However, Boston has managed a dismal 1-4 record in Price's past five outings when working on five full days of rest. Boston treated the Angels rather rudely in the series opener, adding to Anaheim's woes. They're just 4-9 over the past 13, and 2-5 in their past seven at home. They're also just 1-4 across JC Ramirez's past five home outings while going 1-6 in their past seven against southpaws. Total bettors might enjoy the 'under', as it has hit in four of the past five meetings in Anaheim while going 6-2 over the past eight overall in the series.

Betcha didn’t know: While Tanaka has been better lately, he has lost each of his past two starts whilg going 3-5 with a 5.88 ERA and a .302 opponent batting average across 10 starts on the road this season. For whatever reason he has risen to the occasion when facing Seattle in his career, going 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA and one complete game across five starts against the M's. Seattle has won just twice over their past 13 games at Safeco while going 1-8 in their past nine at home vs. RHP. Ariel Miranda has stepped up, however, with the M's 10-4 over his past 14 against teams with a winning overall mark. Still, Seattle is just 7-21 over their past 28 home tries against the Bronx Bombers.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-240) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+115) at Twins

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-210 to -240) vs. Braves

                          • MLB notebook: Sandoval back with Giants
                            July 22, 2017

The San Francisco Giants made their reunion with third baseman Pablo Sandoval official on Saturday when he signed a minor league contract.

The 30-year-old Sandoval spent his first seven major league seasons with San Francisco (2008-14), winning World Series titles with the Giants in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Sandoval will report to Class A San Jose.

Sandoval was the 2012 World Series MVP with the Giants but struggled since leaving San Francisco for Boston as a free agent. He signed a five-year, $95 million contract after the 2014 season and was released by the Red Sox on Wednesday when he did not report after being designated for assignment.

Injuries and poor performance plagued Sandoval in Boston. He hit .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 2015, played in only three games in 2016, and batted only .212 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 32 games with the Red Sox this season. Sandoval left San Francisco on bad terms after the 2014 season, claiming the team disrespected him during contract negotiations leading up to his departure.

--Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, who missed Friday's game with a left finger injury, returned to the lineup for Saturday afternoon's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bryant sprained his little finger on his left hand in a headfirst slide in the first inning of Chicago's 8-2 victory over the Braves at Atlanta on Wednesday. X-rays were negative, but the 25-year-old was experiencing soreness while gripping the bat.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon on Friday expressed doubt about Bryant playing Saturday. He batted second and played third base.

Bryant is coming off a National League MVP season when he helped the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908.

--The Milwaukee Brewers activated infielder Eric Sogard from the 10-day disabled list and optioned slumping center fielder Keon Broxton to Triple-A Colorado Springs, the team announced.

Sogard, 31, sustained a left ankle strain in late June and has not played since July 4. He is batting .331 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 43 games this season.

Broxton, 27, has gone hitless in his last five games while striking out seven times in 12 at-bats. He was forced out of the starting lineup because of his slump for Friday night's 6-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He struck out on three pitches as a pinch hitter.

Broxton is batting .218 with 14 home runs, 36 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and 124 strikeouts in 293 at-bats this season.

                            • LEADING OFF: Quintana-Wacha at Wrigley, Kershaw aims at 16th
                              July 22, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                              Q HIM UP

Cubs lefty Jose Quintana takes on Michael Wacha and the Cardinals in this week's Sunday night game at Wrigley Field. Quintana was acquired in a trade with the crosstown Chicago White Sox during the All-Star break, then made a dazzling debut for his new team, striking out 12 in seven scoreless innings at Baltimore last weekend. Wacha is coming off his first complete game in a shutout against the Mets, and is 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in July.

                              STREAKING

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw leads the majors in wins at 15-2 going into his start vs. visiting Atlanta. The lefty has won 11 straight decisions, and Los Angeles has won the last 14 games Kershaw has started.

                              TAKE IT EASY

The Diamondbacks have given All-Star pitchers Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray extra rest this month. Manager Torey Lovullo has put in breaks for them, hoping they can stay fresh for the stretch. Ray is set to make his second start since July 6, taking on Stephen Strasburg and NL East-leading Washington. Arizona holds the top NL wild-card spot, and Lovullo wants his top starters ready to pitch deep into the season.

''I've been preaching rest all year long. We want to play as long as we possibly can this season, and if we're playing an extra month of baseball, that's going to pay dividends for us,'' Lovullo said.

                              OUT AGAIN

Yankees second baseman Starlin Castro is headed back to the disabled list after reinjuring his right hamstring while running out a grounder a few days ago. He just came off the DL on July 15. Castro is hitting .307 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs in 79 games.

New York manager Joe Girardi said Tyler Wade will be recalled from Triple-A, where the infielder is hitting .313 with six homers and 30 RBIs.

                              • Dodgers trade reliever Sergio Romo to Rays
                                July 22, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded reliever Sergio Romo to the Tampa Bay Rays in a deal between playoff contenders.

The NL West-leading Dodgers sent Romo and cash to the Rays for a player to be named or cash. The trade was announced after Tampa Bay, which holds an AL wild-card spot, lost to Texas on Saturday night.

Romo was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Thursday. The 34-year-old righty was 1-1 with a 6.12 ERA in 30 appearances for Los Angeles.

Romo spent his first nine seasons with San Francisco before signing with the Dodgers this year. He is 3-1 with four saves and a 3.09 ERA in 27 postseason games, including six scoreless innings in helping the Giants win three World Series championships.
