          • Monday's Diamond Notes
            July 24, 2017

Hottest team: Royals (5-0 past five overall)

The Royals have yo-yoed back and forth in the standings of the American League Central. They won four in a row from July 2-5 to get themselves into a favorable position, only to drop five straight, and seven of eight, to tumble back down the table. They have rattled off five victories in a row against division mates while averaging 7.8 runs per game during the span to get back on a hot streak, including a sweep of the stumbling White Sox. Now, they'll head to Motown looking for a repeat performance against the Tigers starting on Monday. It's a test with Jason Hammel on the hill, as the Royals are just 2-6 over his past eight tries against teams with a losing overall record and 1-5 over his past six road outings overall.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-9 past 10 games, 1-12 past 13 overall)

The White Sox mailed it in, trading off parts of a mediocre team to contenders needing spare parts. As such, Chicago has immediately nosedived in the standings, slipping 12 1/2 games out of first place in the American League Central. They just had their clocks cleaned in Kansas City over the weekend, now they'll face a rival Cubs team playing their best baseball of the season. The Pale Hose are 1-7 over their past eight interleague games, 1-4 in their past five tries against right-handed starting pitching and 7-22 in their past 29 tries against teams with a winning overall mark. In addition, they're just 7-20 over the past 27 road outings. Total bettors betting the 'under' in this rivalry have benefitted greatly lately. The under is 3-0-2 over the past five meetings and 15-4-3 in the past 22 meetings at Wrigley Field.

Hottest pitcher: Jacob deGrom, Mets (11-3, 3.37 ERA)

DeGrom has rattled off a career-high seven consecutive victories, and he has a good chance of making it eight in a row on the road against San Diego. The Padres have the league's worst run differential at minus-132. New York has won four straight against left-handed starting pitching, five of the past six against National League West foes and nine of their past 12 on the road against teams with a losing record. On the flip side, the Padres are 4-1 in their past five against the NL East, but they're just 2-5 over the past seven vs. RHP, 1-5 across Clayton Richard's past six starts and 6-21 in his past 27 tries against NL East foes.

Coldest pitcher: Kevin Gausman, Orioles (6-7, 6.11 ERA)

Gausman actually looked like a major league pitcher last time out against the Rangers, holding them to just one run and four hits with eight strikeouts across six innings in a quality start. In fact, Gausman has won three straight decisions and he hasn't taken a loss over his past five outings. Still, he has a lot of work to do before he can be trusted by bettors. He has allowed 72 earned runs, tied for second-most in the majors, and his 1.75 WHIP is among the worst in the majors. Opposing hitters are still raking at a .316 clip against him, too.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (12-4-1 past 17 overall)

The 'under' has been an impressive 12-4-1 over their past 17 outings, and 16-6-4 over the past 26 at Citizens Bank Park. In addition, the under is 19-6-3 over the past 28 tries against a right-handed starting pitcher while going an impressive 36-14-3 over the past 53 against American League West foes. It will be quite the test for the under to cash with Vincent Velasquez on the bump, however, as the 'over' has connected in 12 of his past 16 outings. That includes a 6-2 mark over his past eight appearances at 'The Vault'. For what it's worth, the over is also 5-2-1 over the past eight meetings in this series and 5-2-1 in the past eight in Philly, too.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (8-1-1 past 10 overall)

The Padres allowed plenty of runs, and lead the league in negative run differential. The over is 8-1-1 over their past 10 outings, 3-0-1 in their past four showings at Petco Park and 4-0-1 in Clayton Richard's past five starts at home. In addition, the over is 4-1 over his past five starts overall and 5-1-1 in the team's past seven against teams with a losing overall mark. The over is also 5-2 across the past seven in San Diego, too.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Pirates

The Pirates were cooled off a bit in Colorado, which is no surprise considering they're 1-6 over their past seven tries against National League West foes. However, the Bucs have still won 12 of their past 16 overall while going 6-1 across Gerrit Cole's past seven starts. The Bucs are also 14-4 over Cole's past 18 appearances against NL West opponents. For what it's worth, the Pirates are 4-1 over their past five games on a Monday, although they're just 1-6 in Gerrit Cole's past seven appearances on the first weekday. The Giants continue to struggle, going 4-10 over their past 14. Matt Cain gets a chance to keep a rotation spot on a permanent basis. They're just 3-7 across his past 10 starts and 5-17 over his past 22 tries against NL Central foes.

Betcha didn’t know: The Rockies fell back in the National League West with a cold snap before the All-Star break, but they regrouped and had a giant homestand to get back into the postseason picture. In fact, they sit atop the National League Wild Card standings at the moment. They look to stay there facing a Cardinals team that has been stuck in neutral most of the season. Still, St. Louis is just 4 1/2 games back in their division, so they have plenty left to play for. Rockies rookie sensation Antonio Senzatela has 10 victories, and he might have the luxury of facing a lineup without Matt Carpenter (quadriceps). He checked out of Sunday's game early due to a right quad injury.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-270) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+150) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-200 to -250) vs. Twins

            • Beltre bolstering Hall case while closing in on 3,000 hits
              July 24, 2017

Adrian Beltre needs 11 hits to reach 3,000 - a milestone that would bring some long overdue attention to a quietly great player.

Beltre has never won an MVP award, and he's been an All-Star only four times, missing out even in 2004, when he was on his way to hitting 48 home runs for the Dodgers. Although he's been overlooked at times, the 38-year-old third baseman has put together a well-rounded case for the Hall of Fame, and his 3,000th hit may very well solidify it. Beltre also has 453 home runs, a career .286 average and five Gold Gloves.

Beltre and the Texas Rangers open a nine-game homestand Monday night against Miami, so his 3,000th hit could come at home.

Beltre is among a handful of players in their late 30s or older who still have an opportunity to add to their resumes as their careers wind down. These other stars have varying cases for the Hall of Fame:

              - Albert Pujols, Angels. The 37-year-old Pujols is signed through 2021, so the three-time MVP has a chance to add a few more milestones to his long list of accomplishments. He hit his 600th home run earlier this year, and his 3,000th hit will likely come next season. Hank Aaron, Alex Rodriguez and Willie Mays are the only players to reach both those marks.

              - Ichiro Suzuki, Marlins. Suzuki has over 3,000 major league hits - and that doesn't count his stats from when he was in Japan. He's 43 now and hitting just .227, but his unique career has been a marvel.

              - Carlos Beltran, Astros. The 40-year-old Beltran has 433 home runs and 312 steals, and although Mets fans remember his strikeout to end the 2006 NL Championship Series, his overall body of work in the postseason has been stellar. He's hitting only .229 this season, so his bat may finally be slipping, but he'll have plenty of support for the Hall.

              - Chase Utley, Dodgers. Utley's prime was probably a bit underrated. He won four straight Silver Sluggers from 2006-2009 and put up big power numbers for a second baseman. The 38-year-old is hitting .225 this year, and he's still 176 hits shy of 2,000. His sabermetric case for the Hall is a decent one despite that low hit total, but he hasn't done much to stand out late in his career.

              - CC Sabathia, Yankees. Sabathia's Hall chances took a hit when he posted a 4.81 ERA from 2013-2015. His 2015 season ended with a trip to an alcohol rehab center, and the left-hander has enjoyed more success on the field since. Sabathia, who turned 37 this past week, is 9-3 this year with a 3.44 ERA. He needs 203 more strikeouts to reach 3,000.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

              THAT WAS FAST

The Chicago Cubs were 5 + games behind first-place Milwaukee at the All-Star break, and despite the obvious talent on the roster for the defending World Series champions, it was fair to wonder if they'd let the Brewers reach too comfortable an advantage. Since then, Chicago has gone 8-1, and the Cubs are now one percentage point ahead of Milwaukee atop the NL Central.

The pressure will be on the Brewers to respond, especially now that a resurgent Pittsburgh team is only three games behind.

              HIGHLIGHT

Aaron Judge's 31st homer of the season nearly left Safeco Field on Friday night, landing three rows from the top. Statcast wasn't even able to get an accurate read on it. The Mariners' staff estimated the drive at 440 feet, which drew immediate skepticism .

The Yankees beat Seattle 5-1 that night.

              LINE OF THE WEEK

Nolan Arenado, Rockies, hit three homers with seven RBIs in a five-hit day Wednesday as Colorado beat San Diego 18-4. Impressive, even for Coors Field.

                • Tuesday’s six-pack

Odds to win the PGA Championship, August 10-13th

                  8-1— Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy

                  10-1— Dustin Johnson

                  15-1— Jason Day, Rickie Fowler

                  20-1— Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm

                  25-1— Koepka, Rose, Stenson, Garcia

                  30-1— Adam Scott, Justin Thomas

                  *******************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                  13) Tampa Bay Rays traded for struggling reliever Sergio Romo this weekend; why? Rays are 51-49 this season, right in the playoff mix, but they’re 14-23 in games where the winning run scores after the 6th inning.

If games were five innings long and not nine, Tampa Bay would be 54-29-17, so they’ve taken a hit in late inning situations this season. Maybe Romo can help. At least it is a sign from the front office to the players that they’re trying to win.

                  12) Aaron Boone was gushing on Sunday Night Baseball about how fun/exciting this week is, because of trade deadline activity- the trade deadline is Monday.

I’ve been an A’s fan since 1965; since 1975, the A’s have spent a lot of time dealing their better/more expensive players to wealthy teams at the trade deadline. Trade deadline week isn’t fun for me or anyone else who roots for the A’s or small market teams who aren’t miraculously contending that year.

                  11) Colts’ QB Andrew Luck had shoulder surgery in the offseason; he starts training camp on the PUP List (Physically Unable to Perform), but has been throwing footballs and can come off that list at any time.

                  10) Read an article over the weekend about Red Sox pitcher David Price cursing out Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley on the Red Sox team charter, because Eckersley is often honest on the air and actually criticizes players now and then. That is his job.

Eckersley doesn’t do many road games, so he seldom travels with the team. It is sad that neither the manager or GM or Price have apologized to Eckersley, who took criticism like a man when he wore the uniform, and he was a damn good pitcher.

I watch a ridiculous amount of baseball every day for six months a year; most announce teams are glorified cheerleaders for the home team. Cincinnati would be an exception, Minnesota and St Louis to an extent, but just about all of the others are see-no-evil, hear-no-evil types.

                  9) I’ll say this about Michael Kay or whoever else is working on the YES Network doing Bronx Bomber games; Joe Girardi takes a lot of grief for his decisions. Saturday night, Girardi pinch-ran Jacoby Ellsbury at first and let Ronald Torreyes bat, with the tying run on first. The two guys in the booth raised an eyebrow that Ellsbury didn’t pinch-hit instead- you don’t hear that on local TV very often.

Torreyes got a hit that tied the game; Girardi is a really good manager who is not exempt from taking a good deal of grief. Was just surprised to hear it.

                  8) Texas Longhorns refurbished their football locker room this summer; it cost $1.1M to refurbish 126 lockers- that works out to $8,700 each. Could’ve bought each kid a crummy used car for that amount.

                  7) A 65-year old woman stole a taxi cab in Philadelphia, then picked up a fare before police apprehended her. The woman had picked up a 23-year old woman and her infant daughter. No word on whether got a tip from the young woman before she was arrested,

                  6) Jimmer Fredette has apparently signed up for two more years of playing ball in China; the BYU alum scored 37 a game over in China last season. In foreign countries, the American stars are expected to score a lot of points. Jimmer can score a lot of points.

                  5) Good state from theMMQB.com: In NFL history, 24 players have been targeted more than 180 times in a season, and not one of them won a Super Bowl during that season. First of these 24 players was Sterling Sharpe, in 1993.

Moral of the story; winning teams have more balance on offense.

                  4) Clayton Kershaw is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with his bad back.

                  3) Former Washington/USC coach Steve Sarkisian replaces Kyle Shanahan as OC of the Falcons. Unusual for a Super Bowl team to bring in a coordinator from outside the organization the next season. What a rollercoaster Sarkisian’s life has been the last few years, on and off the field.

                  2) If the baseball playoffs started today (they do not), they would look like this:
                  NL: Washington-Brewers-Dodgers. Wild Cards: Arizona-Colorado
AL: Boston-Cleveland-Houston. Wild Cards: New York-Kansas City

                  1) Happy birthday, Biff Pocoroba; the former Atlanta Braves’ catcher (1978 All-Star) was one of my boyhood heroes. He caught Phil Niekro’s knuckleball, once hit a game-winning, bases-loaded double off of Tom Seaver on national TV; he turns 63 today. Happy birthday, sir.

                    • MLB notebook: Kershaw (back) to miss 4-6 weeks
                      July 24, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expecting ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw to be sidelined at least a month after leaving Sunday's game with back pain.

The initial prognosis by the team on Monday, first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and confirmed by the Los Angeles Times, is that Kershaw will miss four to six weeks.

A final determination of Kershaw's condition and timetable for his absence will be made after an examination by specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.

Kershaw was on his way to a runaway Cy Young season when he encountered tightness in his back Sunday.

Kershaw was 15-2 with a 2.07 ERA before Sunday's game and even had a case for Most Valuable Player for the National League West-leading Dodgers. He threw 21 pitches, struck out two and walked one before manager Dave Roberts visited the mound.

--The Minnesota Twins nearly struck a deal for left-hander Jaime Garcia last week with the Atlanta Braves.

On Monday, the Twins got their man after acquiring the 31-year-old along with catcher Anthony Recker and cash considerations from Atlanta in exchange for minor league right-hander Huascar Ynoa.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Twins assumed the remainder of Garcia's salary (approximately $4.55 million) and $200,000 of Recker's $300,000 salary. The Braves are sending $100,000 to the Twins.

Garcia, who is making $11.5 million this year, will be a free agent after the season. He owns a 4-7 record with a 4.30 ERA in 18 starts with Atlanta in 2017. Garcia has posted a 66-52 record with a 3.65 ERA in 176 career appearances (165 starts) with the St. Louis Cardinals and Braves.

--The Boston Red Sox promoted prized prospect Rafael Devers from Triple-A Pawtucket before their game against the Seattle Mariners.

Devers, a third baseman, will assume the roster spot made available after right-hander Kyle Martin was optioned to Pawtucket following Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Boston also transferred left-hander Robbie Ross Jr. to the 60-day disabled list.

Devers was to be available off the bench Monday and likely start Tuesday, according to reports. The 20-year-old batted .311 with 20 homers and 60 RBIs in 86 games this season between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket, including a 14-for-35 stretch with two homers in nine games with the PawSox.

--The New York Mets placed Zack Wheeler on the 10-day disabled list and recalled fellow right-hander Tyler Pill from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Wheeler, who has been struggling in his comeback from Tommy John surgery in 2015, is being plagued by a stress reaction in his right arm. The 27-year-old had been on the disabled list from June 21 to July 1 with biceps tendinitis.

Wheeler owns a 3-7 record with a 5.21 ERA in 17 starts with the Mets this season. He has allowed 26 earned runs in his last 23 2/3 innings since June 13.

Pill hasn't fared well in five games this season with New York, posting an 0-3 record with a 5.00 ERA. The 27-year-old has a 4-3 record with a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts for Las Vegas this season.

                      • LEADING OFF: Stanton surges, Devers debuts, Gray auditions
                        July 24, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

                        GIANT GIANCARLO

Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton has hit six home runs in seven games and is tied with Yankees rookie Aaron Judge for most in the majors at 32. Stanton has 11 this month, including two Monday night against the Rangers. He'll next face lefty Cole Hamels in Texas.

                        HE'S HERE

Prized Red Sox prospect Rafael Devers is set to make his first big league start, facing ace Felix Hernandez in Seattle. The 20-year-old rookie was called up Monday, with AL East-leading Boston hoping he can fill a hole at third base.

Devers hit .300 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs in 77 games with Double-A Portland, then hit .400 with two homers in just nine games at Triple-A Pawtucket.

                        AUDITIONING ATHLETIC

Sonny Gray (6-4, 3.66 ERA) could be making his final start for the A's when he pitches at Toronto. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA over his past five starts, furthering boosting his trade value less as Monday's deadline to make deals without waivers gets closer.

                        ON THE MOVE

Starting pitcher Trevor Cahill, closer Brandon Maurer and reliever Ryan Buchter are set to report to the Kansas City Royals after being acquired in a trade from San Diego. And lefty Jaime Garca joins the Minnesota Twins after being traded from Atlanta - he'll start Friday in Oakland.

A lot of playoff contenders are busy, trying to firm up their roster before Monday's nonwaiver trade deadline.

                        HOMER NOT HAPPY

Rookie Luis Castillo will try to reverse a recent trend for Cincinnati pitchers - they've given up 25 home runs in the last 11 games, and a major league-high 171 this year. Not the easiest task for the Reds going into a two-game series at Yankee Stadium, facing Aaron Judge and a power-packed lineup.

                        CAREFUL

Tampa Bay catcher Wilson Ramos won't start against the Orioles, a day after he was struck on the head by a piece of Ruben Tejada's broken bat in the series opener. Ramos left the game and got six staples to close the cut.

''A little bit of a scare there,'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. ''I think Wilson would have preferred to stay in the game. We just weren't able to stop the bleeding.''

                        REMEMBER ME?

Cesar Valdez makes his first start for Toronto, taking on Oakland at Rogers Centre. The right-hander was pitching for the Athletics when he made his only other start this year, on April 20. The Blue Jays claimed him off waivers in May.
