    BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) Ready or not, Alex Rodriguez will play his final game in pinstripes this week.

One of the most prolific hitters and polarizing figures in baseball history, the slumping slugger plans to take his final turn at-bat with the New York Yankees on Friday night and then become a special adviser and instructor with the team next year.

A-Rod and the club made the announcement before Sunday's 3-2 victory over Cleveland.

''This is a tough day. I love this game and I love this team,'' he said, often choking up. ''And today I'm saying goodbye to both.''

The 41-year-old Rodriguez, who sat out the 2014 season while serving a performance-enhancing drug suspension, will play against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium and then be released following Friday's game. New York will pay him the remainder of the approximately $27 million he's owed as part of his $275 million, 10-year contract.

DENVER (AP) - Ichiro Suzuki tripled off the wall for his 3,000th career hit in the major leagues, becoming the 30th player to reach the milestone.

The 42-year-old Marlins outfielder did it in the seventh inning against Colorado at Coors Field on Sunday. He joined Paul Molitor as the only players whose 3,000th hit was a triple.

Miami players came out of the dugout to congratulate Suzuki, and he waved his helmet to acknowledge the cheers.

Hitting coach Barry Bonds gave him a hug as the celebration at third base ended, and Suzuki got another round of applause when he scored on Jeff Mathis' single, as well as a hug from manager Don Mattingly.

Suzuki gave the crowd a wave as he went into the dugout. He batted again in the ninth and drew a walk.

Suzuki was hitless in his first three at-bats of the game before the big hit against Chris Rusin.

    OLYMPICS

    RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -
After escaping a blanket ban from the Olympics, Russia was kicked out of the upcoming Paralympics as the ultimate punishment for the state running a doping operation that polluted sports by prioritizing ''medals over morals.''

Paralympic leaders expelled one of its most significant members as the IOC announced that 278 Russians have been given clearance to compete at the Olympics after their eligibility in Rio de Janeiro was left to individual sports.

Russia's years of doping deception, including tampering with samples at the 2014 Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi, were outlined last month by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren.

In contrast to IOC President Thomas Bach, who opposed the ''nuclear option'' of banning Russia ahead of Friday's Olympic opening ceremony, Craven directly condemned the Russian state's involvement in doping but stopped short of blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -
Olympic athletes have been competing in near empty venues and before thin crowds in other locations during the opening days of the Rio Games - a problem that can be traced to long security lines, traffic and a lack of familiarity in some sports.

Rugby and equestrian venues have been devoid of fans, and a Brazil volleyball match on famed Copacabana Beach had lots of empty seats. Scattered seats were open early during the basketball game Saturday night between China and star-studded Team USA, usually one of the biggest draws of the Olympics.

Rio organizers said long lines at airport-style security checkpoints prevented fans from getting into events. The line for the beach volleyball venue stretched down the Copacabana promenade to the Olympic rings display several blocks away, though the venue has not been full for any of the matches.

Organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada said the problem was being addressed, and he's hopeful that lines would move quicker as the Summer Games entered its first full week.

    PRO FOOTBALL

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - An emotional and invigorating Hall of Fame weekend came to a grinding halt Sunday night when the Packers-Colts game was canceled because of poor field conditions.

One day after Brett Favre led the eight-member class of 2016 into the hall, its president, David Baker announced the cancellation after discussing problems with the turf with both teams. He said it was a safety issue and that all fans would be fully refunded for ticket purchases, which will cost the hall several million dollars.

Baker noted that the field was new and had been approved when inspected after its first installation. But paint congealed at midfield and in the end zone, hardening those areas. Workers used a variety of equipment to smooth the artificial surface. Rubber pellets used in the turf came loose and were scattered in several spots and needed to be removed, as well.

Joining Favre in the class of 2016 were Tony Dungy, a trail-blazing coach and Super Bowl winner; one of his stars, Marvin Harrison; Kevin Greene; Orlando Pace; Ken Stabler; Dick Stanfel; and Ed DeBartolo Jr.

    AUTO RACING

Sprint Car driver Bryan Clauson remained hospitalized Sunday in critical condition following a harrowing accident in the Belleville (Kansas) Midget Nationals USAC midget race.

Clauson was airlifted to a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, following the Saturday night crash. His family offered no details regarding his injuries in a statement provided by Bryan Clausen Racing.

Clauson is considered the nation's top short-track dirt-car driver. He has won four USAC national championships and was participating in his 116th race of the season on Saturday night.

His schedule this year was on pace for 200 starts, and that included a 23rd-place finish in the Indianapolis 500.

Clauson was a three-time winner and the defending champion at Belleville. He flipped off the guard rail between turns 3 and 4 while leading. His car rolled several times and was hit by another car.

It was his second wreck of the weekend.

          • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Houston, we have a problem

Just as the Astros seemed to be finding their way in the American League playoff race, they’ve hit a major pothole.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including a series between the pitching-weak Minnesota Twins and the struggling Houston Astros.

            Houston, We Have a Problem

Just as the Astros seemed to be finding their way in the American League playoff race, they’ve hit a major pothole.

Houston has scored a paltry 17 runs over its last nine games, going 2-7 SU and 1-7-1 O/U over that span. The good news: an upcoming four-game set with the Twins could reverse both trends.

The Astros won two of three while going 2-0-1 O/U in its previous three-game set with the Twins, and while Minnesota has been scoring a ton of runs, it still has a 4.48 ERA since the break.

            Sanchez’s Starter Swansong?

The Blue Jays have decided against shuffling ace starter Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen - at least for now. But the hard-throwing right-hander may be making his final start of the year Saturday afternoon against Houston.

Sanchez’s overall numbers look fantastic (11-2, 2.85 ERA, .289 opponent OBP), but he’s just a middle-of-the-pack starter in terms of units (-65).

Keep a close eye on Saturday’s total. While the Astros are having all sorts of trouble generating offense, Sanchez, despite going 6-16 O/U in 22 games season, has seen an average of 10.2 runs scored in six day starts this season - well up from a 7.75 runs-per-game total over his 16 night outings.

            Thanks for Nothing

The National League Central is on pace to accomplish something that hasn’t been done in six years - and it isn’t good.

All five NL Central teams are at a negative unit return heading into the new week; the Pittsburgh Pirates lead the way at “only” 141 units lost, followed by the Chicago Cubs (-278), Milwaukee Brewers (-367), St. Louis Cardinals (-482) and Cincinnati Reds (-844).

If the numbers hold, the NL Central will be the first division to be without a positive money line since the American League West all finished with negative units won in 2010. It would be a surprising result for a division that, just last year, was considered among the strongest in baseball.

            Hitting Notes

            * The Minnesota Twins have been a red-hot over play (more on that below), and they have a few of their hitters to thank - Joe Mauer chief among them. Maker’s best days are clearly behind him, but he still racked up five straight multi-hit games this week, driving in nine runs in six outings.

            * Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado put on an incredible show in Sunday’s 10-2 drubbing of the Chicago White Sox, swatting three home runs and driving in seven. The Orioles improved to 14-8 SU and 10-11-1 O/U in games where Machado goes deep.

            Pitching Notes

*Marlins ace Jose Fernandez may be one of the top under options in the league (8-13), but low totals have predictably bucked this trend. Over has played in five of Fernandez’s seven starts with a total below 7. Fernandez and the Marlins are facing a total of 6 1/2 entering Monday’s tilt with visiting San Francisco.

*Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood has been victimized by a bizarre trend that has seen him go 2-9 O/U in 11 home starts. Despite being supported by high-octane offence, Chatwood’s 11 home starts have seen the home team score a paltry average of 3.36 runs per game. Chatwood goes Tuesday against visiting Texas.

            Totals Trend

The Twins are the hottest totals play right now, racking up nine consecutive overs. They’re an impressive 6-3 SU over that span, and will look to add to that win total against the Astros this week.

            Monday's Weather Report

            * There is a chance of thunderstorms and warm, muggy temperatures in the mid-90's for first pitch tonight in Denver where the Rockies will host the Texas Rangers. The total for tonight's game is set at 10.5.

            * Cool temperatures are expected in Oakland tonight for the game between the A's and the Baltimore Orioles. I can assure you that summer isn't over yet, but it's going to feel like it tonight in the Bay Area with evening temperatures dipping into the 50's! The total tonight is set at 8.5.

                • Rangers, Rockies square off
                  August 8, 2016

TEXAS RANGERS (65-47) at COLORADO ROCKIES (55-56)

First pitch: Monday, 8:40 p.m. ET
                  Sportsbook.ag Line: Texas -115, Colorado +115, Total: 10.5

The Rangers will be looking to win their third straight game when they face the Rockies in Colorado on Monday.

Texas has been playing extremely well recently and the team has now won seven of its past 10 games. One reason the Rangers are playing this way is because they are really hitting the ball. Texas has racked up at least 11 hits in three of its past four games.

The team will be hoping to keep that up and should be able to do so, as hits come even easier in Colorado. The Rockies, meanwhile, have now lost three of their past four games, but this team is still suddenly in the playoff race in the National League. If they can string together some victories then they will be in very good shape moving forward.

The pitching matchup in this game is going to be pretty lopsided, as LHP Cole Hamels (12-3, 2.89 ERA, 138 K) is on the mound for Texas and LHP Tyler Anderson (4-3, 3.25 ERA, 52 K) is going to be giving it a go for Colorado.

Hamels has been incredible all season and is the Rangers’ best pitcher, but Anderson has been pretty impressive for the Rockies this season. It is worth nothing that the Rangers are 44-21 against the money line when the line is +125 to -125 this season.

Texas could, however, be without DH Carlos Beltran (Quad) in this one, as he is listed as questionable for this game.

Hamels has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season and he has now allowed just five earned runs over his past four starts. The lefty has, however, had some issues with his control, as he has walked eight batters over his past three games.

It’s crucial that he is able to throw strikes in this game, as the Rockies are the type of team that will make him pay for his mistakes.

Offensively, Texas could really use some production out of 3B Adrian Beltre (.271, 16 HR, 65 RBI). Beltre is one of the team’s best hitters and has really been struggling lately, as his average has dipped from .280 to .271 over the past 10 games.

If he doesn’t start to get some hits soon then things are going to be tough on this Rangers team, especially in a potentially Beltran-less game against the Rockies on Monday.

The Rockies are not known for having great pitching, but Tyler Anderson has been brilliant since beginning his short career with Colorado.

The Rockies’ lefty has allowed three or less earned runs in nine of his 10 starts and that is all a team like Colorado can ask for out of its starters.

This is the second most high-scoring team in baseball, so quality starts are huge when the Rockies can get them. Offensively, both 3B Nolan Arenado (.283, 29 HR, 87 RBI) and OF David Dahl (.370, 3 HR, 7 RBI) are guys to keep an eye on in this one.

Arenado has been one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball all season and will be feeling confident coming into this one, as he went 3-for-3 with two homers, a double and five RBI on Sunday.

Dahl, meanwhile, has made his transition to the pros look easy and has been a machine since getting called up. He’ll be hoping to continue to spark his team moving forward.

                  • Bochy hospitalized, out for Miami
                    August 8, 2016

MIAMI (AP) The San Francisco Giants say manager Bruce Bochy has been admitted to a Miami hospital after falling ill and will miss Monday night's game against the Marlins.

The Giants did not specify what sent the 61-year-old Bochy to the hospital Monday morning. They said in a statement that he is ''resting comfortably'' and will be monitored overnight.

Bochy underwent a heart procedure in February 2015 to insert two stents.

The Giants say they expect him to return Tuesday. Bochy led the team to World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Bench coach Ron Wotus will serve as manager in the opener of the three-game series in Miami.

MIAMI (AP) Brandon Crawford became the first major leaguer in 41 years to get seven hits in a game, finally putting the San Francisco Giants ahead to stay with an RBI single in the 14th inning of an 8-7 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

Crawford tripled, doubled and had five singles in eight at-bats, tying an NL record. The previous player to get seven hits in a game was Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Rennie Stennett on Sept. 16, 1975, at the Chicago Cubs.

Stennett set a modern-era record by accomplishing the feat in a nine-inning game. The only other player to do that was Wilbert Robinson for the old Baltimore Orioles of the National League in 1892.

Johnny Burnett holds the major league mark for an extra-inning game with nine hits for Cleveland in a 1932 contest that lasted 18 innings.

George Kontos (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Giants, who were without manager Bruce Bochy after he was hospitalized in the morning with an illness.

The Giants went 6 for 21 with runners in scoring position and left 18 on base in a game that took 5 hours, 34 minutes - the longest of the season for both teams.

San Francisco threatened in the 13th when Crawford hit a one-out triple off Dustin McGowan (1-3). After the second out, Marlins manager Don Mattingly intentionally walked two batters to get to the pitcher's spot in the order.

The Giants were out of position players, leaving ace pitcher Madison Bumgarner, a .183 hitter with legitimate power, to pinch-hit with the bases loaded. He struck out to end the inning.

                          MARINERS 3, TIGERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Hisashi Iwakuma threw seven shutout innings for his seventh win in his last eight starts, Mike Zunino and Kyle Seager both had RBI singles off Michael Fulmer in the second inning and Seattle beat Detroit.

Seattle won its fourth straight and moved within 2 1/2 games of Detroit and Boston for the second wild card in the American League thanks to another gem from Iwakuma (13-7). The right-hander allowed five hits and struck out eight, running his streak of scoreless innings at Safeco Field to 21 1/3.

Fulmer (9-3) suffered his first loss since June 17 - also the last time the Tigers lost when he started.

Rookie Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

                          BLUE JAYS 7, RAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Devon Travis had a career-high four hits, including the go-ahead single in the seventh inning, and Toronto beat Tampa Bay.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 299th career home run as the Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak against the Rays.

Encarnacion and Jose Bautista both had three RBIs as Toronto scored more than four runs for the first time since a 9-1 win over Baltimore on July 30.

Joaquin Benoit (2-1) worked one inning for the win. Roberto Osuna gave up Logan Forsythe's solo homer in the ninth but finished for his 25th save.

Xavier Cedeno (3-4) took the loss.

                          DODGERS 9, PHILLIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Corey Seager homered twice and Chase Utley and Yasmani Grandal also went deep for Los Angeles.

Seager has 21 homers, breaking Hanley Ramirez's record for homers by a Dodgers shortstop. He's also the eighth L.A. rookie with 20 or more homers in a season.

The Dodgers built a 5-0 lead after one inning off Zach Eflin (3-5).

Julio Urias (2-2) started for the first time in nearly three weeks. He gave up five hits and three runs (one earned) in five innings.

                          ATHLETICS 3, ORIOLES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kendall Graveman pitched seven strong innings, Billy Butler hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth and Oakland beat Baltimore despite another home run from slugger Manny Machado.

Machado, who hit home runs in his first three at-bats Sunday, belted his 26th home run of the season with two outs in the eighth.

It wasn't enough to prevent the Orioles from losing and falling into a first-place tie with Toronto in the AL East.

Vogt homered leading off the fourth against Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman (3-9), walked and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and added an RBI single in the seventh.

Graveman (8-7) and two relievers made it hold up.

                          TWINS 3, ASTROS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tyler Duffey pitched six effective innings and Minnesota took advantage of two misplays by Houston center fielder Carlos Gomez in a three-run fifth.

Gomez, the former Twins outfielder, let Jorge Polanco's single skip by him for a two-base error that allowed one run to score. Then he lost a fly ball off Juan Centeno's bat, turning it into an RBI triple.

Danny Santana followed with a run-scoring single, and Minnesota won for the seventh time in nine games.

Duffey (7-8) permitted one run on four hits and struck out eight. Three relievers combined for three hitless innings, and Brandon Kintzler finished for his 10th save in 11 chances.

Collin McHugh (7-9) gave up three runs and 10 hits in seven innings, losing his third straight start.

Eddie Rosario had three hits for last-place Minnesota, which is 21-12 since July 2 and leads the majors in runs and hits during that span.

                          RANGERS 4, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Elvis Andrus hit a two-run single, Mitch Moreland delivered a tiebreaking double and Texas scored three times in the ninth inning to beat Colorado.

The AL West had a double steal before Andrus' single tied it 3-all. Moreland sent Andrus home with a double before he was thrown out stretching at third.

Carlos Estevez (2-7) got his fifth blown save in the ninth.

Charlie Blackmon had an RBI single in the third. Nolan Arenado homered in the fourth and hit an RBI single in the eighth off winner Keone Kela (3-1).

                          CARDINALS 5, REDS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yadier Molina started and ended a five-run rally in the ninth inning as St. Louis stunned Cincinnati.

Molina singled to open the inning and was hit by a pitch from Ross Ohlendorf with the bases loaded to drive home the winning run. In between, Matt Carpenter drove in two runs with a single and Brandon Moss tied it when he walked with the bases loaded.

The comeback erased what had been a futile night of offense for St. Louis through the first eight innings, as the Cardinals entered the last inning 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Seth Maness (2-2) pitched a perfect ninth to earn the win.

The rally cost Cody Reed his first major league win. Reed threw six scoreless innings.

Tony Cingrani (2-4) left with the bases loaded after allowing the first three runs in the ninth.

                          BRAVES 4, BREWERS 3, 12 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Matt Kemp scored from third base after Keon Broxton dropped Gordon Beckham's sacrifice fly in the 12th inning, and Atlanta beat Milwaukee.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Broxton dropped a drive to deep center field for an error.

Kemp drew a walk from Carlos Torres (2-2) to start the 12th and went to third on a ground-rule double by Nick Markakis.

Brandon Cunniff (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Jim Johnson stranded a runner at second for his ninth save. Atlanta's bullpen combined for six scoreless innings.

Markakis and A.J. Pierzynski homered for the Braves.

                          • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                            — Get well soon Bruce Bochy; the Giants’ skipper spent overnight in the hospital in Miami for observation– he didn’t feel well during the day on Monday.

                            — Giants 8, Marlins 7 (14)– Brandon Crawford had seven hits for San Francisco, first player to do that since 1975, when Rennie Stennett somehow did it in a 9-inning game.

                            — Five picks before Seattle drafted Russell Wilson, the Jaguars drafted a punter and that is why the Jaguars are seldom any good.

                            — That punter is now on the Bucs, so Tampa Bay has a kicker drafted in the 2nd round and a punter drafted in the 3rd round. Unusual.

                            — Oregon transfer Kendall Small is off to Pacific, where he will play for the Tigers’ new coach, Damon Stoudamire.

                            — USA 113, Venezuela 69– Game was 18-18 after first quarter. Venezuela covered the 52-point spread fairly easily.

                            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..

                            13) I’ve heard several former big leaguers this season say that today’s ballplayer works too hard on game days now; that refers to hitting in cage, lifting weights, etc…….

                            12) Olympic basketball has one very good rule: no live-ball timeouts. American basketball, whether it be NBA/college, has too many timeouts. Let the players play.

                            11) I’m in favor of major league baseball teams having 27-man rosters, with no roster expansion in September. If the powers-that-be do not want longer games, then having constant pitching changes in late innings is not a way to accomplish that.

                            10) There is now such a thing as “pizza scissors” which slice your pizza while also lifting the slice off the box– looks like a tremendous Christmas gift I can get myself.

                            9) Houston Astros wore their rainbow throwback uniforms from the 80’s; I’m in the minority, but I loved those jerseys.

                            8) Wesley Bryan won his third Web.Com golf tournament this weekend, gets an automatic “battlefield promotion” to the PGA Tour, so that is good for him.

                            7) Profootball-reference.com is an excellent website; was on there this weekend and learned that Browns/Ravens both had 12 drives end on downs LY, most in NFL, Seattle had only one drive end that way.

                            6) On defense, Steelers ended 15 opponent drives on downs, the Chiefs 13, most in NFL. San Diego ended only one opponent drive on downs last year.

                            5) Some major league team is going to strike gold when it hires Wally Backman as its manager; guy has been sitting down in AAA at Las Vegas for a few years now– he deserves a chance.

                            4) Red Sox lost David Price’s last five starts; he is 0-2, 5.17 during that time- they’re 2-5 in his starts this year if he doesn’t get the decision.

                            3) Papa John’s may be the official pizza of baseball, but the only Papa John’s in Albany doesn’t deliver to my neighborhood; the other six that were here closed a couple years ago. Best pizza I’ve ever had.

                            2) Congrats to Indians’ pitcher Carlos Carrasco, who passed his citizenship test last week and is now an American citizen. Good for him!!!

                            1) Robert Griffin III was named starting QB for the Browns; he will be their 25th starting QB since 1999.
