        • A-Rod to start Thursday for Yankees at Fenway Park
          August 10, 2016

BOSTON (AP) Alex Rodriguez's memories of Fenway Park are as textured as the complicated story of his 22-year career.

This week, A-Rod will wear a Yankees uniform in Boston as a player for the final time. He will start in the finale of New York's three-game series on Thursday night before playing his final game with the team at home the next night.

Manager Joe Girardi announced the plans for A-Rod in Boston prior to Tuesday night's series opener. After Friday's game against the Rays, Rodriguez will be released and shift into a role as a special adviser.

Girardi said Sunday he would get Rodriguez as many innings as possible this week, but said Tuesday he got caught up in the emotions of Sunday's announcement and instead will prioritize the Yankees' pursuit of a playoff spot.

Rodriguez said he is disappointed but excited to start at least one more time at Fenway Park, where he made his major league debut in 1994.

''It's a great chance to give me one big, loud boo on the way out and send me to Miami,'' Rodriguez said. ''The one thing is, I love Boston. It's a great city. I love Fenway Park. I started here. My mother and brother and sister were here. I want my girls to go to college somewhere in Boston - I'm not going to say where. But somewhere in Boston. It should be fun.''

The three-time AL MVP and 14-time All-Star was hitting .204 this season with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 216 at-bats. The struggles have relegated him to a diminished role. He hasn't played since Aug. 2 and has appeared in just 62 games this season.

''This has been really difficult, because I think we all expected him to have a good year,'' Girardi said. ''Me and Alex have been through a lot - I mean a lot - over the years that I've been here. Hopefully when we all get away from this, he remembers more good than bad.''

It's unclear if Rodriguez's career will actually end Friday. The 41-year-old designated hitter remained noncommittal when asked if he was definitely retiring as a player after Friday's game.

''I'm going to really enjoy the last three or four days,'' he said.

Rodriguez nearly came to Boston from Texas before the 2004 season, but the players' union rejected the deal because it hinged on Rodriguez taking a $40 million pay cut. He then was traded to New York.

''We had the deal worked out. We had a lot of people involved and at the very end - in the ninth inning with two outs - it was vetoed,'' Rodriguez said. ''That was an emotional roller coaster. So often you think about what could have been.''

He said he has no regrets about how things eventually worked out.

''I thought it was an exciting potential,'' he said. ''But things turned out incredible for the Red Sox. It turned out well for us. We have four championships between us. ... But overall, I thought the game grew incredibly. I thought the game might've been at its height when you think about those playoffs in '04, '05, '06. It was a good time for baseball.''

          • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
            August 10, 2016

Hottest team: Braves (4-0 past four, 6-1 past seven)

The Braves have caught fire on the road, winning four in a row by an average of 6.3 runs scored to just 3.0 runs allowed over the past four games. Atlanta has won four in a row against National League Central Division teams, and they have won six in a row on the road against right-handed starters. In addition, they're 5-1 in their past six games when facing a starting pitcher with a WHIP over 1.30, which Chase Anderson certainly qualifies. On the flip side, the Brewers have dropped five of their past six games overall, and they're just 9-23 in their past 32 games vs. RHP. Milwaukee is also just 6-13 in the past 19 starts with Anderson on the hill.

            Coldest team:
            Angels (0-5 past five, 6-11 past 17)

The Angels have had difficulty scoring runs lately, and that's hard to believe with a lineup consisting of Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, etc. However, since July 17 the Halos have managed three or fewer runs in eight of their past 17 games while allowing five or more runs in 10 of the past 17. The Halos have really gone in the tank, losing their past five on the road, and each of their past four against right-handed starting pitching. They're also 7-19 in their past 26 road games vs. RHP, and 7-15 in their past 22 interleague battles, including 3-9 in their past 12 against NL Central foes.

Hottest pitcher: J.A. Happ, Rays (15-3, 3.09 ERA)

Happ has been a huge part of the team's surprising success this season, posting 15 wins with a 1.15 WHIP. Lately, he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, going 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 23 strikeouts with eight walks over the past 19 innings in his past three starts. Toronto has won each of Happ's past four outings against divisional foes, 6-0 in his past six starts against a team with a losing record and the Jays are 14-6 in their past 20 games at home. Toronto has won 16 of their past 23 games against divisional rivals, too.

Coldest pitcher: Ian Kennedy, Royals (6-9, 4.03 ERA)

Kennedy posted a 2.77 ERA in four April starts, a 3.24 ERA in six May starts, a 5.83 ERA in five June starts and a 4.96 ERA in six July starts. The biggest problem with Kennedy is his inability to keep the ball down and in the park, as he has given up 26 home runs in just 127 1/3 innings over 22 starts. The Royals have lost each of Kennedy's past seven outings, and they're 0-9 in their past nine games against left-handed starters, too. All signs appear to point to a ChiSox win, although Chicago is just 4-10 in their past 14 trips to Kauffman Stadium.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (8-0-2 past 10)

The last time the 'over' hit in a Texas Rangers game was July 29, 10 games ago. The 'under' is 8-1-3 in the past 12 interleague games for Texas, while going 4-1 in their past five games against a left-handed starter. In addition, Martin Perez is on the hill and the 'under' is 7-2 in Perez's past nine assignments, while going 3-0-1 in his past four interleague starts. And another 'under' might be coming, as the 'under' is 20-8 in Colorado's past 28 road games, and 4-1 in Jorge De La Rosa's past five road starts againt a team with a winning record.

            Biggest OVER run
            : Rays (5-0 past five, 8-3 past 11)

The 'over' has connected in five in a row for the Rays, and 4-0 in their past five divisional battles. The 'over' has also went 8-2-3 in their past 13 road games against a left-handed starter while going 10-4-1 in their past 15 games following a victory. In addition, the 'over' is 6-0-2 in their past eight trips to Rogers Centre in Toronto, while cashing in each of the past five meetings overall. And umpire Clint Fagan is behind the dish for Wednesday's game, and the 'over' is 6-0 in his past six Toronto games.

            Matchup to watch:
            Athletics vs. Orioles
The Athletics are giving the Orioles fits at O.co Coliseum, winning each of the first two games to drop the O's into a tie for first place. The struggles on the road are nothing new for the O's, as Baltimore has won just four of their past 14 games away from Camden Yards. They've been unable to take advantage of the dregs of the league, either, winning just two of their past eight road games against a team with a losing record. Baltimore is also 4-13 in their past 17 against AL West foes. The A's have won five straight against AL East teams, and they're 5-0 in their past five home games against a team with a losing road record.

Betcha didn’t know: Astros LHP Dallas Keuchel is 7-11 with a 4.56 ERA in 148 innings this season, a far cry from his Cy Young award-winning season of a year ago. He has turned things around at home, going 3-4 with a 3.18 ERA in 10 home outings, but he is absymal on the road with a 4-7 record and 5.74 ERA while the opposition is hitting .282 against him on the road. He works against the Twins in Wednesday's game, and he was tuned up for five runs, seven hits and five walks in just 4 1/3 innings in his first encounter with Minnesota this season back on May 2.

            Biggest public favorite:
            Cubs (-200) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Reds (+165) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Angels (+225 to +195) at Cubs

            • Fielder done playing after 2nd surgery
              August 9, 2016

Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder will have to quit playing baseball after his second neck surgery.

A person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press that Fielder isn't formally retiring, but that doctors won't give the six-time All-Star medical clearance to play again. That person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because there was no official announcement from the Rangers or Fielder about his future.

The Rangers said only that Fielder would hold media availability Wednesday when the team returns home after an eight-game trip. Texas won at Colorado 7-5 on Tuesday.

Fielder, who is signed through 2020, had a cervical fusion on July 29 to repair a herniation between two disks in his neck. That was done just above the area where the 32-year-old Fielder had the same procedure in May 2014, only 26 months earlier.

He will finish his 12 MLB seasons with 319 career homers, the same number that his father Cecil Fielder had in 13 seasons but fewer games.

Before surgery in 2014, Prince Fielder had MLB's longest active streak of 547 consecutive games played. He played in 809 of 810 possible games from 2009-13 with Milwaukee and Detroit, after playing at least 157 games each of the three seasons before that.

The Rangers acquired Fielder from Detroit in November 2013 for second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Fielder hit .247 with three homers and 16 RBIs over 42 games in 2014 before the first surgery. He came back to play 158 games in 2015, when he hit .305 with 23 homers and 98 RBIs but slowed late in the season. The stout first baseman and designated hitter will finish this season at a career-low .212 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 89 games.

Fielder was only two years into a $124 million, nine-year contract when he got to Texas. His annual salary is $24 million each of the next four seasons, of which $6 million is due from the Tigers as part of the 2013 trade and the remaining $18 million from the Rangers, though half of their liability is expected to be covered by insurance.

Over 1,611 major league games with the Brewers (2005-11), Tigers (2012-13) and Rangers (2014-16), Fielder hit .283 with 1,028 RBIs. The only other father-son duo with more than 300 homers each is Bobby and Barry Bonds. Cecil Fielder got his 319 homers in 1,470 games over 13 seasons with five teams.

BOSTON (AP) Benched from the starting lineup once again as his finale approaches, Alex Rodriguez pinch hit and flied out in the seventh inning of the New York Yankees' 9-4 comeback win against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

New York said Sunday that Rodriguez, a 41-year-old designated hitter with 696 home runs, will be released following Friday's homestand opener against Tampa Bay.

Red Sox star David Ortiz limped off in the ninth inning after fouling a pitch off his right shin.

Chants of `We Want A-Rod''! echoed around the park at the start of the seventh. He was greeted by loud boos when he stepped out of the dugout to face Matt Barnes. They were louder when he was announced and again when he trotted back to the dugout after his flyout to right field.

Rodriguez has just one start and eight at-bats in 17 games since July 22 as New York traded veterans and turned toward a youth movement. He hadn't appeared in a game since Aug. 2.

Rookie Gary Sanchez had four hits, including his first major league home run. Didi Gregorius also homered for New York.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) pitched one inning for his first victory with the Yankees since being acquired from Arizona last week. Fernando Abad (1-6) was the loser.

                      CUBS 3, ANGELS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Hammel won his career-best fifth straight start, pitching four-hit ball over six scoreless innings, and Chicago beat Los Angeles for its season-high ninth straight win.

The major league-leading Cubs matched their longest streak since Aug. 6-15 of last year and moved a season-best 30 games over .500 (71-41).

Hammel (12-5) struck out six, walked two and helped himself at the plate when he singled and scored in the fifth against Ricky Nolasco (4-9) to make it 2-0. Addison Russell made it 3-1 with a solo homer off JC Ramirez in the eighth. Dexter Fowler chipped in with two hits, including an RBI double.

Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save in five chances since the Cubs got him in a trade with the New York Yankees last month.

The Angels, last in the AL West, matched a season high with their sixth straight loss.

                      GIANTS 1, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Two days after Brandon Crawford battered Miami with seven hits, he homered in the fourth inning to help San Francisco win a series for the first time since the All-Star break.

Crawford tied an NL record with seven hits in the opener of the three-game set. In the finale, he put San Francisco ahead with his 11th homer leading off the fourth.

Miami hitting coach Barry Bonds was ejected for the first time this season in the sixth inning for arguing about balls and strikes.

The Giants finished 4-5 on their trip and improved to 8-16 since the All-Star break. They have a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Jeff Samardzija (10-8) pitched 5 2/3 innings to best former Notre Dame teammate David Phelps (5-6). Four relievers completed a five-hitter. Santiago Casilla pitched around Ichiro Suzuki's two-out double in the ninth, striking out J.T. Realmuto for his 26th save.

Suzuki singled and doubled to increase his career hits total to 3,002.

                      PHILLIES 6, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, Ryan Howard added a three-run, pinch double in the ninth and Philadelphia beat Los Angeles.

Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth, even with the Dodgers down 3-2, and loaded the bases. Howard hit the bases-clearing double to right for insurance runs in the victory that dropped the Dodgers a game behind first-place San Francisco in the NL West.

Elvis Araujo (2-1) pitched one inning for the victory. Scott Kazmir (9-6) was the loser.

                      ATHLETICS 1, ORIOLES 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ross Detwiler and John Axford combined on a seven-hitter and Oakland beat Baltimore to knock the Orioles out of first place in the AL East.

Called up from the minors earlier in the day, Detwiler (1-0) allowed six hits over a career-high eight innings and struck out two while leading the A's to their third consecutive one-run win over the Orioles.

Marcus Semien and Yonder Alonso hit consecutive doubles in the third inning for the game's only run.

The Orioles entered the day percentage points ahead of Toronto, but fell a game behind the Blue Jays.

It was a welcome output on a day that left-hander Gio Gonzalez (8-9) allowed four runs and seven hits, including a home run by Francisco Lindor, and struck out five in five-plus innings.

Recently acquired closer Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for the save.

Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin (11-5) allowed seven runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

                      PADRES 4, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Travis Jankowski capped San Diego's scoring with a straight steal of home in the eighth inning, and Edwin Jackson limited Pittsburgh to two hits in seven innings.

Jankowski took off during catcher Eric Fryer's return throw to pitcher Antonio Bastardo and scored standing up when Fryer could not handle Bastardo's low throw to the plate.

Jackson (3-2) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jordy Mercer's leadoff single. The 14-year veteran struck out seven and walked three while raising his career record against the Pirates to 10-3. Miami released Jackson on June 2, and San Diego promoted him from Triple-A El Paso on July 17.

Ryan Vogelsong (1-2) was the loser.

                      BLUE JAYS 7, RAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - J.A. Happ became the first 16-game winner in the major this season, combining with three relievers on a four-hitter in Toronto's victory over Tampa.

Happ (16-3) allowed four hits, all singles, to win his 10th consecutive decision. Joe Biagini, Jason Grilli and Ryan Tepera worked an inning each to complete Toronto's seventh shutout.

Troy Tulowitzki homered and had a season-high five RBIs, and Justin Smoak also connected for the Blue Jays. Tulowitzki hit a two-out, three-run homer off Blake Snell (3-4) in the first inning.

Garcia (9-8) needed only 85 pitches to get through eight-plus innings. Seung-Hwan Oh finished for his 10th save.

                      RANGERS 5, ROCKIES 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre singled in two runs in the eighth inning, and Texas rallied late for the third straight game against Colorado.

The first two comebacks were in Denver, where the Rangers had a three-run ninth for a 4-3 victory and erased a three-run deficit in the eighth inning of a 7-5 win. Texas extended its winning streak to five.

In the first of two games in Texas, Colorado rookie David Dahl had a tying two-run triple in the eighth to extend his career-opening hitting streak to 16 games. He scored the go-ahead run on Ryan Raburn's sacrifice fly. The Rockies have lost six of theor last seven games.

Jake Diekman (3-1) allowed Dahl's tying hit before 30-year-old rookie Matt Bush pitched a perfect ninth for his first big league save.

                      DIAMONDBACKS 3, METS 2, 12 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Oscar Hernandez hit his first major league homer in the 12th inning to lift Arizona Diamondbacks past New York.

Hernandez was recalled from Double-A Mobile after Arizona placed catcher Welington Castillo on the paternity list Tuesday. Playing his first game this season, Hernandez drove a sinker from Jerry Blevins (4-2) down the left-field line.

Randall Delgado (3-1) pitched two perfect innings for the victory.

The Mets' Kelly Johnson forced extra innings with a two-run homer in the ninth off Jake Barrett. The blown save was Barrett's fourth in eight chances.

                      BREWERS 4, BRAVES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chris Carter hit a three-run homer, Chase Anderson won his third straight decision in Milwaukee's victory over Atlanta.

Anderson (7-10) allowed two runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Tyler Thornburg picked up his fourth save in eight chances with a perfect ninth.

Carter homered off Joel De la Cruz (0-5) in a four-run third. Ryan Braun singled in the first run and then Carter cleared the bases with his 26th homer.

De La Cruz left after getting hit in the right knee by Orlando Arcia's two-out grounder in the fourth.

                      ROYALS 3, WHITE SOX 2, 14 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lorenzo Cain's two-out single in the 14th inning scored Christian Colon from second base.

Colon opened the inning with a single and Paulo Orlando sacrificed him to second. Cain laced a single to center to score Colon, ending the 4-hour, 34-minute game, the longest by the Royals this season.

Dillon Gee (4-5), the eighth Kansas City pitcher, struck out three in two perfect innings to pick up the victory. Matt Albers (2-5) was charged with the loss.

Jarrod Dyson led off the 13th inning with a triple, but the Royals failed to get him home. Dan Jennings struck out the next three batters: Drew Butera, Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar.

                      MARINERS 3, TIGERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit his 28th homer in the eighth inning after Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander dueled through the first seven, and the Mariners completed a three-game sweep.

Hernandez and Verlander each pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a battle of former Cy Young Award winners. Hernandez struck out eight and allowed three hits and four walks, while Verlander allowed seven hits and struck out six.

Leonys Martin added an insurance run on an RBI single later in the eighth.

Arquimedes Caminero (1-0) pitched the eighth and earned the victory. Nick Vincent finished for his second save.

                      • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

                        — Apparently, Bubba Watson’s accountant is his caddy at the Olympics.

                        — Astros DFA’d Carlos Gomez, one of baseball’s least popular players who is also having a terrible year.

                        — Bronx Bombers are 0-8 in Luis Severino’s starts, outscored 49-11.

                        — Tigers’ 3B Nick Castellanos got hit by a pitch the other night and broke his hand, a big loss for Detroit.

                        — Georgia Tech’s AD left for the same job at Purdue, bad news for the Boilers’ football coach. ADs like to hire their own people. Purdue better win this year, or else…….

                        — Rich Hill hasn’t pitched for the Dodgers yet; Jharel Cotton threw 8.2 perfect innings for the A’s AAA team this week. Advantage, Oakland.

                        **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

                        13) RIP John Saunders, who passed away this week at age 61. Saunders stood out because he had no shtick, he wasn’t a look-at-me, attention junkie like so many TV types today. He just did his job and did it really well– he did a lot of work with the Jimmy V charity and just seemed like a very nice man. A sad day. RIP, sir.

                        12) Ping pong was once known as “whiff whaff”; someone trademarked the name “ping pong” in 1901, then it became a financial issue as people started calling it table tennis instead. Just thought you’d like to know.

                        11) New York Mets are 0-11 in the game following their last 11 wins.

                        10) Josh Reddick is hitting .125 (4-32) since getting traded to the Dodgers.

                        9) Red Sox P Steven Wright will miss his next start because he jammed his shoulder while pinch-running (yes, pinch-running) against the Dodgers last weekend. That injury should reverberate all over baseball, a good starting pitcher getting hurt while pinch-running. Oy.

                        8) Odd Stat of the Day: Hector Santiago was traded from the Angels to the Twins couple weeks ago. Santiago has started 24 games this year; here are his stats, with Angels’ SS Andrelton Simmons playing behind him, or not:

15 starts with Simmons at SS: 9-1, 3.14
9 starts without Simmons at SS: 1-4, 8.62

I remember a spring training game this March, when Angels’ TV guys were gushing about Simmons’ defense. Santiago just seemed more comfortable with Simmons there, but now Santiago is in Minnesota and Simmons is still in Anaheim; we’ll see if this trend continues.

                        7) USA (-27.5) 98, Australia 88– Good ballgame; Aussies led 54-49 at the half, hung in until the very end- they COMPETE hard.

                        6) France 76, Serbia 75– Tony Parker hit go-ahead shot as France scored last six points of game. Not being able to call live-ball timeout made last 0:10 of this game chaotic. Big difference from NBA or college ball, where Serbia would’ve called TO and had ball with few seconds left to play.

                        5) Spain has seven NBA guys but still lost its first two Olympic games, by total of three points. No bueno.

                        4) Idea for a reality show– Divorce Court, where cameras would film the conferences with husband/wife, lawyers/judge in chambers. This would be tremendous TV, very solid entertainment. Guaranteed.

Long time ago I worked in a courtroom for a year; the absolute highlight of the job was first Friday of each month, when the divorce conferences would take place. Only 7 people in the room: judge, husband, wife, their lawyers, the court reporter and court clerk (me).

No way this wouldn’t be a great TV show; take my word for it.

                        3) A’s got wins by starting pitchers Graveman/Neal Monday/Tuesday, the first time they got wins by starting pitchers in consecutive games since May 29-30. That’s ten long weeks.

                        2) Funny conversation on Giants’ TV Wednesday, about the Hall of Fame and Brandon Crawford’s bat from Monday night, when he had seven hits. Turns out the HOF asked for Crawford’s bat; Giants’ TV guy Duane Kuiper said “No way!!!” when asked if he would willingly give up a bat he had just got seven hits in a game with. Athletes are superstitious.

1– Jerry Jones’ grandson is a junior QB at Highland Park HS in Dallas; he is one of three QBs competing for the starting job. John Stephen Jones wears #9, just like another QB in Dallas. Highland Park has won three state championships. HS football is serious business in Texas.
