  • LEADING OFF: Sanchez starts again for Jays, Tillman for O's
    August 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

    TAKE IT EASY

Toronto righty Aaron Sanchez makes his first start in a week, pitching at Cleveland. Sanchez (12-2, 2.84 ERA) was an All-Star this summer, but the AL East-leading Blue Jays are trying to limit his innings in a season they hope will last well into October.

    GETTING CLOSE

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien had an RBI single Friday night while playing in his 124th consecutive game. But that streak may soon end.

''His wife is going to have something to say about that,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.

    Semien's wife is due Saturday.

    READY NOW

Chris Tillman (15-4, 3.46) gets the call for Baltimore after having his start Wednesday pushed back because of a sore right shoulder. He faces the Astros at Camden Yards.

    STRUGGLING SALE

White Sox ace Chris Sale (14-6, 3.30 ERA) seeks his first win since July 2 when he faces the visiting A's. The lefty is 0-4 in his past six outings, and has allowed eight earned runs and 15 hits in his last two starts.

    NICE START

Pirates righty Chad Kuhl (3-0, 3.73) makes his seventh career start, taking on the visiting Marlins. Pittsburgh is 6-0 in games the rookie has pitched.

    STILL HEALING

Reds slugger Adam Duvall has missed four straight starts after fouling a ball off his left instep. The All-Star outfielder has hit 27 home runs in his first full season in the majors.

              August 21, 2016

CINCINNATI (AP) Brandon Finnegan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Adam Duvall and Jose Peraza each hit home runs in returns to the lineup and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-1 on Saturday night.

Adrian Gonzalez singled to center field leading off the seventh to break up Finnegan's no-hit bid, and that was the only hit against the 23-year-old lefty.

Finnegan (8-9) allowed two walks and had eight strikeouts, one short of tying his career high, while throwing 96 pitches over seven innings. He also doubled and scored twice while the Reds extended their winning streak to a season-high five games.

Finnegan did not return after the game was delayed in the middle of the seventh for 1 hour, 19 minutes because of rain.

Cincinnati had a season-high 18 hits, including three each from Peraza and Eugenio Suarez.

Dodgers starter Brett Anderson (0-2) allowed six runs in three innings before being pulled with a blister on his left index finger.

              CUBS 9, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Kris Bryant hit a long homer and drove in four runs, Ben Zobrist had three hits and also went deep, and Chicago routed Colorado.

Miguel Montero had three hits and drove in three for the Cubs, who spoiled the major league debut of Rockies starter Jeff Hoffman.

Trevor Cahill (3-3) got the win with 4 2/3 innings in relief of spot starter Mike Montgomery.

Hoffman (0-1), a former first-round pick who was acquired a year ago as part of the deal that sent Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, started off well but ran into trouble the second time through against the NL Central leaders. Bryant made it 7-0 in the fifth with his 31st homer, a three-run drive that went an estimated 469 feet to dead center.

Montgomery didn't give up a hit until Nick Hundley's one-out homer in the fifth made it 7-1. Cahill relieved Montgomery, who left after throwing 60 pitches. The Cubs added a run in the eighth and another on Zobrist's 14th homer in the ninth.

              METS 9, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes hit two long home runs and an RBI double in his second game back from the disabled list, boosting Bartolo Colon and New York past San Francisco.

The Mets had lost five of six before topping the team that began the day leading the NL West. The Giants dropped to 11-22 since the All-Star break.

Cespedes, who'd been out since Aug. 4 with a strained right quadriceps, drove in three runs. He has 24 homers this season. The slugger's shot off Matt Moore (7-10) in the third inning went 457 feet, according to Statcast.com. Cespedes added a 418-footer off reliever Jake Peavy in the seventh.

Alejandro De Aza hit a three-run homer in a four-run sixth that stretched the Mets' lead to 7-2.

Colon (11-7) allowed two runs, scattering nine hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.

              WHITE SOX 6, ATHLETICS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale pitched eight scoreless innings for his first victory in 49 days, Jose Abreu homered and Chicago beat Oakland.

Sale (15-6) was the majors' first 14-game winner and the AL starter in the All-Star Game, but the lefty had gone 0-4 in six starts, interrupted by a five-day suspension for slicing up throwback uniforms he didn't want to wear. Sale allowed three hits and retired the last seven batters, five by strikeout, while throwing a season-high 120 pitches.

The White Sox scored four runs with two outs, including Abreu's solo shot that just cleared the eight-foot wall in right in the first inning. Melky Cabrera added an RBI double in the second and a run-scoring single in the fourth off Ross Detwiler (1-2). Oakland's Danny Valencia homered in Oakland's two-run ninth off Nate Jones before David Robertson earned his 31st save.

              YANKEES 5, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Luis Cessa pitched six scoreless innings to win his first major league start and help New York beat Los Angeles.

Brian McCann went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, Starlin Castro went 2 for 4 with two runs and Aaron Judge drove in two. Gary Sanchez hit his fifth home run in six games, a two-out solo homer in the first.

Los Angeles' Albert Pujols hit his 583rd home run in the ninth inning, tying former St. Louis teammate Mark McGwire for 10th on the career list.

Cessa (3-0) allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one. He struggled just twice, giving up back-to-back two-out singles in the third and hitting Mike Trout in the sixth.

Ricky Nolasco (4-11) allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

              ASTROS 12, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jason Castro homered and drove in four runs in Houston's second straight blowout victory over struggling Baltimore.

Alex Bregman and George Springer also homered for the Astros. They beat Baltimore 15-8 on Friday night to snap a five-game losing streak.

Bregman got this rout started with a two-run homer in the first inning off Chris Tillman (15-5). Houston increased its lead to 6-0 in the third and went up 10-1 in the sixth.

Chris Davis homered in a fourth straight game and Steve Pearce also went deep for the Orioles. But Baltimore has dropped eight of 12 overall to fall into the third place in the AL East.

Baltimore pitchers combined to allow a season-high 10 walks. Utility infielder Ryan Flaherty worked the ninth inning, giving up two runs and three hits.

Mike Fiers (9-6) had little trouble in his first career appearance against the Orioles. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing one run and five hits.

              DIAMONDBACKS 2, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Robbie Ray struck out a career-high 13 and gave up just one hit in seven innings, pitching Arizona past San Diego.

There were only seven total hits in the game, four by Arizona. The Diamondbacks scored two unearned runs, helped by a pair of throwing errors by pitcher Clayton Richard (0-3).

Ray (7-11) featured a fastball in the upper 90s mph. He overpowered the Padres until the fifth inning when Patrick Kivlehan, called up from Triple-A El Paso before the game, launched a 451-foot home run for his first major league hit.

Arizona used four relievers to close it out. Daniel Hudson induced three infield popups to escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth, and Enrique Burgos earned his first save of the season.

              MARLINS 3, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Xavier Scruggs hit his first major league home run and David Phelps pitched six scoreless innings to help Miami beat Pittsburgh.

Miguel Rojas scored on an error in the third, and Ichiro Suzuki doubled down the right field line in the fourth - for his 3,008th hit in the majors to move into 28th place on the career list - ahead of Scruggs' shot into the bleachers in left field.

Phelps (7-6) allowed two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in his fourth start of the season. Fernando Rodney got the last three outs for his sixth save with the Marlins and 23rd save overall.

Chad Kuhl (3-1) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings.

              MARINERS 8, BREWERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Felix Hernandez pitched eight strong innings, Mike Zunino homered and drove in three runs and Seattle sent Milwaukee to its sixth straight loss.

Hernandez (8-4) gave up two runs and seven hits, striking out eight and walking one to improve to 4-0 in seven starts since coming off the disabled list on July 20. Steve Cishek, who had lost his closer's role, pitched a perfect ninth.

Seattle pulled one game behind Baltimore for the American League's second wild card.

Zunino and Leonys Martin hit back to back homers off Wily Peralta (5-9) to open the seventh, stretching Seattle's lead to 4-0.

              ROYALS 10, TWINS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Gordon homered twice and had a double, Ian Kennedy pitched eight sharp innings and Kansas City beat Minnesota to extend its winning streak to seven games.

The Royals' string is their best since they won seven straight in April 2015. The World Series champions have won 12 of 14 to move back into the AL wild-card race.

Gordon has homered five times in five games. He connected in the fourth inning and again in the fifth for his fourth career multihomer game.

Kennedy (8-9) gave up four hits, walked none and struck out six. Salvador Perez and Gordon hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run fifth, chasing Hector Santiago (10-8).

              PHILLIES 4, CARDINALS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cesar Hernandez homered, doubled and singled, and Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven strong innings in Philadelphia's 4-2 victory over St. Louis.

Maikel Franco had two hits, including a double and the winning RBI, and Aaron Altherr homered for the Phillies. They have hit home runs in 14 straight games.

Jeremy Hazelbaker homered and Jhonny Peralta had three hits for St. Louis, which had won five in a row. The Cardinals are 1 1/2 games head of Miami for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

St. Louis fell short of setting a major league record of 10 straight games with multiple home runs. The Cardinals tied the mark with a pair of homers Friday night.

Hellickson (10-7) skipped his last start because of back tightness. The right-hander looked healthy and sharp, allowing two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Jeanmar Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 33rd save in 37 opportunities. Luke Weaver (0-1) was the loser.

              RED SOX 3, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - David Ortiz homered after being honored by the Tigers and Boston beat Detroit on a rainy night.

Ortiz was given a pregame tribute, then hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

James McCann and J.D. Martinez homered for the Tigers, who have lost 10 of 13.

The start was delayed 80 minutes by storms that moved in during the afternoon, and another heavy downpour interrupted the game for more than an hour after the fifth inning.

Drew Pomeranz (2-2) gave up one run and four hits in five innings. Craig Kimbrel got the last four outs for his 22nd save.

Justin Upton doubled off the top of the wall in center field with two out in the ninth, but Casey McGehee struck out to end the game at 12:17 am.

Daniel Norris (1-2) was the loser.

              NATIONALS 11, BRAVES 9

ATLANTA (AP) - Ryan Zimmerman homered and had three hits in his return from the disabled list, and Washington used an eight-run fourth inning to take control before holding off Atlanta.

Daniel Murphy and Trea Turner hit homers in Washington's big fourth inning against Tyrell Jenkins (2-4). The Nationals trailed 3-1 before setting a season high for runs in an inning and taking a 9-3 lead.

Washington set a Nationals record with nine hits in the inning, including eight straight, and had 17 hits in the game.

Max Scherzer (13-7) allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings. Mark Melancon gave up a two-run single to Chase d'Arnaud, cutting the lead to two, before recording the final out for his 36th save.

              BLUE JAYS 6, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion homered, Roberto Osuna bounced back from a nightmarish outing to record the save and Toronto beat Cleveland.

Toronto was stunned Friday night on Tyler Naquin's game-ending inside-the-park home run off Osuna that gave the Indians a 3-2 victory.

The latest matchup between division leaders also had plenty of drama, with Osuna getting his 28th save by retiring Naquin on a groundout to end it.

Encarnacion's leadoff homer in the fifth, his 35th of the season, put Toronto back on top. Joe Biagini (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Josh Tomlin (11-7) allowed all six Toronto runs.

                — Rams, Cowboys are only NFL teams to open this season with two divisional games.

                — Lead singer Gord Downie of Canadian rock band Tragically Hip is the godson of former Boston Bruins’ coach/GM Harry Sinden.

                — John Lynch is getting inducted into the Ring of Honor in both Denver and Tampa Bay this season. Pretty impressive.

                — USC is a 10-point underdog at Alabama in two weeks; last time they were a double digit dog was 2011, when the Trojans (+15) won 38-35 at Oregon.

                — Ole Miss is 11-4 vs spread as an underdog under Hugh Freeze.

                — Tom Cruise has made 37 movies in his career; someone ranked them on the Interweb, with Jerry Maguire too high at #1, Cocktail too low at #36. My favorite? A Few Good Men.

                **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

                13) Ravens 19, Colts 18– Result of this game will soon be forgotten, but how the final score happened could shape NFL strategy for years to come.

Colts scored a TD with 3:54 left to take a 18-17 lead; proper strategy says to go for 2, to try and get a 20-17 lead so a Ravens’ FG wouldn’t beat you. One small problem……..

Baltimore’s Anthony Levine picked off a pass on the 2-point conversion and ran it back all the way, giving the Ravens two points of their own, and the lead and eventually, the win. Will this make coaches hesitant to go for 2 in this situation when the games count for real? Will they kick the PAT or just take a knee there? I’m thinking most will still go for two.

                12) Watching exhibition games on NFL Network, so many former players are saying that tackling is suffering because no one is allowed to practice it anymore. Contact during practice is limited now by league rule. I hear this during almost every game I watch.

                11) Way back in 1980, Nick Saban was Ohio State’s defensive backs coach; the man he replaced? Pete Carroll. The coach who replaced Saban when he (and the entire defensive staff) was fired a year later? Dom Capers, now the defensive coordinator in Green Bay.

                10) Washington Redskins musn’t have wanted a tie game Friday night; they scored a TD with 0:29 left to go up 20-18 on the Jets, then went for 2, guaranteeing the game couldn’t go overtime.

Bryce Petty threw for 242 yards as he battles for the Jets’ #2 QB job; Baylor alum Petty replaced former Redskin Robert Griffin III as the Bears’ quarterback.

                9) Quick story: I am sitting by myself having breakfast in Denny’s at 2:30am the other night; pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon and a tall glass of milk. This young middle eastern lady (in her 20’s) comes to my table and asks what the white liquid (milk) is.

She speaks very broken English; at first I thought she was making fun of me for drinking milk, then I realize she has no idea what it is. I tried to explain it to her; she nodded and left.

Just me doing my small part to improve international relations.

                8) Padres’ pitcher Clayton Richard was #2 QB for the Michigan Wolverines in 2004, when he backed up Chad Henne. Richard has bounced around the big leagues for the last nine years, starting 133 games.

That’s similar to Seattle OF Seth Smith, who was Eli Manning’s backup at Ole Miss.

                7) White Sox pitcher Chris Sale had 13 games LY where he struck out 10+ hitters; he has had one this year.

                6) A high school football stadium is being built in McKinney, TX; it will cost $69M to build. For a high school football stadium.

                5) Dallas Cowboys have a new practice facility in Frisco, TX, which is part of a bigger complex; the domed facility will also be the home field for eight high school teams in the Frisco area– the stadium seats 12,000 people. High school football in Texas is serious business.

                4) Houston Astros released OF Carlos Gomez; their rivals in Arlington picked him up, which should spice up Ranger-Astro games going forward. Gomez was playing for a new contract this year, but didn’t play well.

                3) The more I think about it, if baseball changed one rule and made a relief pitcher face at least two batters in every appearance, instead of one batter like it is now, that would greatly lessen the amount of pitching changes and increase pace of play late in games.

                2) Tampa Bay Bucs spent a #2 draft pick on kicker Roberto Aguayo, who never missed a FG shorter than 40 yards at Florida State. In his first two preseason games with the Buccaneers, Aguayo has missed a PAT and a 32-yard FG. Oy.

1– 49ers 31, Broncos 24– Christian Ponder was signed by the 49ers as a backup QB during the week; he was 7-8 for 86 yards, threw for a TD, ran for another after being out of football last year. We say these exhibition games do not matter, but to someone like Ponder, they mean everything.

                        • Sunday's Diamond Notes
                          August 20, 2016

Hottest team: Royals (10-1 last 11)

The defending World Champions aren’t going away quietly, as Kansas City is making a charge towards a Wild Card berth. The Royals sat seven games below .500 on August 5, but Kansas City has won 12 of its past 14 games, including seven of their last nine at home. Kansas City has done most of its damage against division opponents in this span, including a 5-1 record against Minnesota. The Royals wrap up their series with the Twins on Sunday as Danny Duffy takes the mound. Kansas City owns a perfect 10-0 record in Duffy’s last 10 appearances, including a 6-0 mark at Kauffman Stadium.

Coldest team: Brewers (2-8 last 10)

Milwaukee is one of two teams that has dropped 40 road games this season as the Brewers conclude a disastrous trip in Seattle. The Brewers lost all four games at Wrigley Field to the Cubs, while falling in the first two games to the Mariners. Milwaukee scored two runs in the first three losses, but bounced back with six-run efforts on Thursday and Friday. Since the All-Star break, the Brewers have lost 14 of 18 games away from Miller Park, while dropping 10 of their past 11 road series finales. Matt Garza heads to the hill on Sunday, as the Brewers are 4-1 in his previous five trips to the mound.

Hottest pitcher: Jason Hammel, Cubs (13-5, 2.75 ERA)

Last season, Jake Arrieta put together a terrific second half on the way to a Cy Young award. Another Cubs’ right-hander is on fire post All-Star break as Hammel has won six consecutive decisions, including three straight scoreless outings. However, Hammel has done most of his damage in this span at home, as he is making his first road start since July 22 when he takes the mound at Colorado. Hammel tries to improve on his away struggles, as the Cubs are 2-5 in his last seven road starts.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Urena, Marlins (1-4, 6.80 ERA)

The Miami right-hander has lost each of his last three starts, while allowing 15 hits and 13 earned runs in his past two appearances (10.1 innings). Urena gave up five first inning runs to the Reds in his previous outing, but actually didn’t allow a run in the next five innings of a 6-3 setback. The Marlins have compiled a 1-8 record in Urena’s past nine starts since last June, while yielding 10 hits and five earned runs in less than five innings of a 5-1 loss at Pittsburgh last May as the Marlins and Pirates wrap up their series on Sunday.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (11-3 last 14)

There has been no rhyme or reason to Oakland’s latest UNDER stretch, as the A’s tossed a shutout against the White Sox on Friday, but failed to register a run against Chris Sale on Saturday in a 6-2 loss. The A’s offense has scored four runs or less in six of the past seven games, while also dealing with several inflated totals in UNDERS at Texas. Zach Neal makes his fourth start of the season for Oakland in Sunday’s finale at Chicago, as the rookie allowed five earned runs in his previous outing against Seattle.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (6-1 last seven)

Arizona and San Diego played two exciting games to start its series at Petco Park as the two NL West rivals combined for 17 and 11 runs. In fact, 10 of the last 11 meetings between the Padres and D-backs have sailed OVER the total, including eight of the past 10 matchups with the teams combining for at least 10 runs. Braden Shipley has cashed the OVER in each of his last two starts for Arizona, while right-hander Luis Perdomo has finished OVER the total in three of four starts at Petco Park.

Matchup to watch: Blue Jays vs. Indians

Toronto and Cleveland have played a pair of exciting contests at Progressive Field the last two nights. The Indians rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning in Friday’s 3-2 victory, highlighted by Tyler Naquin’s inside-the-park homer. Toronto built a 5-0 lead on Saturday before Cleveland erased that deficit with five runs in the fourth. However, the Jays were lifted to victory by an Edwin Encarnacion home run in the fifth for a 6-5 triumph.

Corey Kluber has been on fire of late for the Indians, winning four straight decisions as the 2014 Cy Young winner takes the mound on Sunday. Kluber looks for a better performance against Toronto after getting lit up by the Blue Jays in early July by allowing five earned runs in a 17-1 drubbing. Marcus Stroman counters for Toronto, as the right-hander is seeking his 10th victory of the season. Toronto has compiled a 5-8 record in Stroman’s last 13 outings, which includes a 2-1 defeat to Cleveland in 19 innings on July 1, even though he scattered five hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings.

Betcha didn’t know: The Nationals have been an instant fade when Gio Gonzalez takes the mound on the highway this season. Washington has lost seven of his past eight starts away from Nationals Park, while the Nats are 5-11 in his last 16 appearances overall. Washington goes for the sweep of Atlanta on Sunday, as Gonzalez has lost in his past two visits to Turner Field, both coming back in 2014.

                            • Mets, Giants close series
                              August 20, 2016

NEW YORK METS (61-62) at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (68-55)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET
                              Sportsbook.ag Line: Mets -110, Giants +100, Total 7.5

                              Game 1: Giants 10 Mets 7
                              Game 2: Giants 8 Mets 1
                              Game 3: Mets 9 Giants 5

The Mets and Giants meet in San Francisco for a big Sunday night battle.

Both New York and San Francisco are losing their footing, but the teams are in different situations right now. While the Mets currently find themselves sliding down the standings in the NL Wild Card race, the Giants have recently blown a huge lead in the NL West and are looking for a way to get that back.

A win over New York on Sunday night could help, as it would be a huge confidence boost to defeat a pitcher like RHP Noah Syndergaard (10-7, 2.76 ERA, 171 K). The guy that will need to try to outduel Syndergaard is RHP Jeff Samardzija (10-8, 4.24 ERA, 112 K) for the Giants.

On paper, this will look like a matchup that is destined to be won by Syndergaard, but Samardzija is capable of turning in a gem every now and then. Samardzija will also have the benefit of pitching against a Mets lineup that is banged up and struggling to score runs on a nightly basis.

The Mets still believe they have a shot at an NL Wild Card spot, but this team must turn things around fast. A couple of wins in a row would be huge for New York and Noah Syndergaard knows he must deliver in this big Sunday night spot. The righty has, however, had some issues over the past few weeks. While Syndergard has not pitched poorly, he is not giving the Mets a lot of innings. He has pitched less than seven innings in nine of his past 10 starts and it’d be huge for New York if he can start to use less pitches to make his impact.

One thing that should spark this Mets team is that OFs Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce should be in the lineup together on Sunday. Cespedes has been battling injuries recently, but he’s healthier now and New York should be pretty dangerous with the two of them together. It’d also be huge if 2B Neil Walker is back in the lineup for this one.

Jeff Samardzija has been extremely solid his last two times on the mound and the Giants are hoping that he has turned a corner. If he can be the pitcher San Francisco thought it was signing in the offseason for the remainder of the year then this team should be dangerous come postseason time. In his past two starts, Samardzija has allowed just three earned runs in 11.2 innings of work. If he can turn in a quality start in this game then the Giants will be extremely happy with him.

Offensively, C Buster Posey is somebody to keep an eye on in this game. Posey is 3-for-6 against Syndergaard in his career and should be able to get on base a few times in this one as well. It’d also be big if SS Brandon Crawford is on his game for San Francisco. Crawford is 2-for-5 against Syndergaard in his career and has also been one of the Giants’ best hitters this season. The team needs both of them to find a way to drive in runs against a very good pitcher.

                              • LEADING OFF: Royals, Duffy on a roll; Walker expecting child
                                August 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                                STREAKING

Royals lefty Danny Duffy goes for his 10th straight victory when he starts vs. the visiting Twins. Kansas City has won seven in a row, moving the defending World Series champs back into wild-card contention.

                                BABY WATCH

Neil Walker will fly home to Pittsburgh after a game against San Francisco to be with his wife Niki for the expected birth of their baby girl. Walker said doctors will induce the birth on Monday night, a Mets off day. Walker said his wife is doing well. ''It's just been a big waiting game,'' Walker said. ''I knew as soon as she got pregnant that we'd probably be out here on the West Coast, whether it was here or Arizona or St. Louis, we knew that was going to be challenging.''

                                E-ROD OK

Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.11) starts against Detroit after leaving a game Tuesday with left hamstring tightness. Rodriguez has a 2.52 ERA in seven starts since a midseason demotion to the minors to make mechanical adjustments. Justin Verlander (12-7, 3.44) has a 2.01 ERA over his past nine starts.

                                LOOKING FOR MILESTONE

Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez seeks his 100th career win when he starts the finale of a four-game series at Atlanta. Gonzalez is 99-75 in his career, which began in 2008 with Oakland. Gonzalez threw six scoreless innings but received no decision in his only other start of the season against Atlanta, a 2-1 win on April 12. Braves starter Joel De La Cruz (0-6) is still searching for his first big league win.

                                NEW START

Carlos Gomez is expected to be in the lineup for the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Released by Houston on Friday, the two-time All-Star outfielder signed a minor league deal with Texas. The Rangers have lost right fielder Shin-Soo Choo to a broken left arm, and general manager Jon Daniels says Gomez - a Gold Glover in center in 2013 - would be used as a corner outfielder.

                                AILING ASTRO

Astros third baseman Luis Valbuena could be lost for the season after a setback in his recovery from a strained right hamstring. He's been out since late July, and hurt himself in a workout this weekend in Baltimore. Valbuena has been sent back to Houston to be re-evaluated. He is hitting .258 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs in 86 games.
