  • Mets head to San Francisco
    August 18, 2016

NEW YORK METS (60-60) at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (66-54)

First pitch: Thursday, 10:15 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: New York +145, San Francisco -155, Total: 6.5

The Giants will be looking to get themselves back on track with a win over the Mets on Thursday.

The Giants will be hoping to avoid a fifth straight loss when they host the Mets in this game, but both teams have really struggled lately. New York was seemingly a lock to make the postseason before the season, but the team now finds itself 10.5 games back in the division and four games back in the NL Wild Card race. The Giants, meanwhile, now find themselves out of the division lead after losing seven of their past 10 games. Both teams are desperate at this point and that will make for an exciting game on Thursday.

The starters in this matchup will be RHP Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.30 ERA, 129 K) for New York and LHP Madison Bumgarner (11-7, 2.11 ERA, 189 K) for San Francisco. The Giants are fortunate to be at home in this game, as they are 4-2 against the Mets in San Francisco over the past three seasons. It is, however, worth noting that New York is 26-10 against the money line after three or more consecutive OVERS in the past two seasons.

2B Neil Walker (Back) is questionable for the Mets in this one, but it’s more likely he won’t play. OF Yoenis Cespedes (Quad) isn’t eligible to be activated until Friday for New York and his presence will be missed greatly.

New York needs to find a way to get back into the win column and Wild Card race and Jacob deGrom will be the guy hoping to get them moving in the right direction on Thursday. The righty has been nearly unhittable over the past four games, allowing just two earned runs total in that span. One thing deGrom is doing well is avoiding both homers and walks. If he can do that on Thursday then the Mets should be in pretty good shape. In his only start against San Francisco this season, deGrom pitched six innings and allowed three runs. None of those runs were owned, though. New York would surely take another performance like that from him in this meeting.

Offensively, the Mets will likely need OF Jay Bruce (.254, 27 HR, 86 RBI) to step it up in this one. Bruce is just 3-for-18 in his career against Bumgarner, but he does have a homer and four RBI. With Walker and Cespedes likely out, he’s the best hitter in this lineup and must set the tone on Thursday.

The Giants are really struggling right now and Madison Bumgarner is on the mound to stop the bleeding on Thursday. The lefty is coming off of a very strong outing against the Orioles, allowing no earned runs in seven innings of work on Aug. 13. He struck out eight batters in that game and will be hoping to carry over that momentum into this one. Fortunately for him Bumgarner, he’ll be facing a Mets lineup that is extremely depleted at the moment.

Offensively, the Giants badly need SS Brandon Crawford (.271, 11 HR, 74 RBI) and C Buster Posey (.294, 12 HR, 57 RBI) to figure out how to hit deGrom. These two guys are the best hitters San Francisco has to offer and they are a combined 0-for-13 against the Mets righty in their careers. If they can’t find a way to produce then this game might get away from the Giants.

    • LEADING OFF: Yanks have new catcher, Bumgarner vs deGrom
      August 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

      NOT GEORGE'S YANKS

The Yankees are a changin', and that continued Tuesday when team owner Hal Steinbrenner said rookie catcher Gary Sanchez was taking over full-time responsibilities from veteran Brian McCann. Sanchez is hitting .360 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 53 plate appearances, and McCann called him a ''future All-Star'' in graciously acknowledging the shifting roles. Steinbrenner said he had to ''overcome a little bit of DNA issues'' to usher in New York's recent youth movement - his dad was George Steinbrenner, after all - but thinks Yankees fans are ready to embrace the Baby Bombers .

      MARQUEE MATCHUP

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (11-7, 2.11) will pitch the series opener against Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.30) and the Mets. The All-Star Bumgarner threw seven shutout innings against Baltimore in his most recent outing to snap a streak of five winless starts in which he was 0-3 and the Giants were 0-5. DeGrom is 1-0 with an 0.65 ERA in his past four starts.

      MARINERS SALE

Major League Baseball owners were set to vote on the proposed sale of a controlling stake in the Seattle Mariners from Nintendo of America to a group of minority owners led by John Stanton. As part of the sale, Stanton will take over as control person from current chairman Howard Lincoln, who is retiring. The agreement was announced in April and approval is expected. The sale could close this week.

      LA STELLA BACK TO BASEBALL

Tommy La Stella is back in the fold with the Chicago Cubs and is expected to return to the majors next month. La Stella reported to Double-A Tennessee after refusing a minor league assignment in July and returning home to contemplate his career. La Stella, who was hitting .295 in 51 games with the Cubs this season, could be back with the Cubs by Sept. 1, said manager Joe Maddon.

      BEATING THE BRAVES

Nationals rookie Reynaldo Lopez (1-1, 5.74) faces the Braves after delivering seven innings of one-run ball against Atlanta on Saturday. It will be Lopez's fourth big league start, and his first two went poorly before he pitched well in the 7-6 win against the Braves.

CHICAGO (AP) Kris Bryant homered twice, doubled and drove in five runs while going 5 for 5 and the Chicago Cubs overcame Jake Arrieta's career-high seven walks to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-6 on Thursday for a four-game sweep.

Bryant tied Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the NL lead with 30 home runs. The Cubs won for the 18th time in 21 games and improved the best record in the majors to 77-43.

Chicago led 5-0 when Arrieta (15-5) allowed a pair of two-out walks in the fourth. Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with a three-run homer. Hernan Perez hit a solo homer in the sixth off Arrieta.

Arrieta allowed four runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his seventh save with the Cubs.

Bryant singled and scored in the first, hit a two-run homer in the third and had an RBI double in the fourth off Zach Davies (9-6). Bryant hit a solo homer off Blaine Boyer in the sixth and added an RBI single in the eighth off Corey Knebel for his second career five-hit game.

                    ORIOLES 13, ASTROS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis each hit two of Baltimore's six home runs, Hyun Soo Kim had a career-high four hits and the Orioles beat rookie Joe Musgrove and skidding Houston.

Mark Trumbo and Manny Machado also homered to help Baltimore improve to 40-19 at home and climb into a second-place tie with Boston in the AL East. The 13 runs matched a season high, set June 1 against Boston.

Trumbo set the tone in the first inning with his major league-leading 35th home run, a three-run shot to left against Musgrove (1-1). Kevin Gausman (4-10) struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings for Baltimore.

Alex Bregman and A.J. Reed homered for the Astros. They have lost five straight.

Michael Mariot (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Jerad Eickhoff to earn the victory. Freddy Galvis led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Franco followed with his 22nd homer, to deep center off Grant Dayton (0-1) to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead.

Jeanmar Gomez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 32nd save.

Justin Turner and Yasmani Grandal homered for the Dodgers.

                    TIGERS 4, RED SOX 3

DETROIT (AP) - Second baseman Ian Kinsler caught a line drive by Mookie Betts for the final out with runners on second and third, and Detroit snapped Boston's six-game winning streak.

Andrew Romine drew a bases-loaded walk to cap a three-run Detroit rally in the eighth.

Boston threatened in the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez. Kinsler was well positioned and needed to move only slightly to his right to make the play on Betts' liner.

Rodriguez got his 34th save in 37 chances.

Justin Wilson (3-4) won in relief. Junichi Tazawa (2-2) failed to retire a batter in the eighth.

                    Sandy Leon homered for Boston.

                    ROYALS 8, TWINS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Gordon hit a grand slam, Dillon Gee pitched seven strong innings and Kansas City beat Minnesota.

The defending champion Royals have won five straight and eight of nine to move above .500 for the first time since July 22. Starting pitchers have a 1.61 ERA in the five-game winning streak, allowing 23 hits and six earned runs in 33 2-3 innings, while striking out 27 and walking seven.

Gordon extended his hitting streak to a season-best nine games. He has homered in three straight.

Gee (5-6) picked up the Royals' first victory from a No. 5 starter since May 31. The Royals are 9-21 is games started by the fifth starter. Tyler Duffey (8-9) took the loss.

                    INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cleveland manager Terry Francona put up a pinch-hitter in the middle of an at-bat and the strategy paid off when Tyler Naquin lofted a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning that lifted the Indians past Chicago.

The AL Central-leading Indians scored a single run in each of the last five innings to overtake Chicago. Cleveland improved to 6-2 on an 11-game homestand.

Abraham Almonte doubled to begin ninth off Jacob Turner (1-2). With Roberto Perez batting, a passed ball by Dioner Navarro moved Almonte to third.

Francona then sent Naquin to the plate with a 1-0 count. The rookie drove the first pitch he saw to center field, deep enough that Adam Eaton couldn't prevent Almonte from scoring.

Andrew Miller (7-1) earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief.

                    NATIONALS 8, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Reynaldo Lopez struck out 11, Jayson Werth reached safely in his 46th straight game and Washington pulled away to beat Atlanta.

Werth hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to tie Rusty Staub on the Nationals-Expos franchise list for the longest streak of reaching base. Werth went 2 for 4 and has 43 hits and 32 walks during his string, the best in the majors this season.

After rain delayed the start for 1 hour, 16 minutes, Lopez (2-1) struck out eight of the first nine batters. He set a career high for strikeouts and allowed one earned run and four hits in seven innings.

The Nationals broke it open with five runs in the eighth.

Rob Whalen (1-2) allowed three hits and one earned run in a career-best six innings.

                    REDS 5, MARLINS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ramon Cabrera hit a three-run homer, Dan Straily continued his second-half surge and Cincinnati beat Miami for its eighth victory in 10 series since the All-Star break.

Billy Hamilton used aggressive baserunning to produce another run, and Eugenio Suarez added an RBI double to give Cincinnati three straight wins over Miami after losing the series opener.

Straily (9-6) improved to 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA over his last six starts. He opened with five shutout innings before giving up Marcell Ozuna's two-run homer in the sixth. Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his second career save in two opportunities.

Jose Fernandez (12-7) was the loser.

                    ANGELS 6, MARINERS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols drove in two runs, Yunel Escobar had three hits and scored twice, and the Angels held off a late rally.

Mike Trout scored twice as the Angels earned a split of the four-game series with just their second win in 14 games. Pujols reached 95 RBIs with a two-run double in the eighth. He's second in the AL, five behind Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion.

Matt Shoemaker (7-13) limited the Mariners to two earned runs - on solo homers to Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz - and five hits.

Fernando Salas gave up a two-run homer to Adam Lind in the ninth, but got Leonys Martin and Shawn O'Malley on grounders to end the game.

Hisashi Iwakuma (14-8) allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings, snapping a streak of three straight wins.

                    PADRES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 8

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Alex Dickerson's two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning lifted San Diego.

Dickerson smacked Enrique Burgos' pitch into the gap in left-center field to snap the Padres' five-game losing streak.

Michael Bourn's soft single drove in pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks in the top of the eighth put Arizona ahead after it rallied from a three-run deficit.

Ryan Buchter (3-0), the Padres' fourth pitcher, got the win.

Brandon Maurer worked the ninth for his sixth save in 10 chances. He gave up an unearned run before stranding the tying and go-ahead runs.

Jake Barrett (1-1) was touched for three runs in the eighth to snap Arizona's four-game winning streak.

                    GIANTS 10, METS 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Madison Bumgarner hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Jacob deGrom in the fourth inning - moments after giving up a grand slam - and San Francisco came back from four runs down.

Bumgarner, who narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat, hit a 2-2 pitch into the stands in left field to cap a five-run inning when the Giants batted around. It was Bumgarner's third home run this season and the 14th of his career.

That helped overcome a shaky outing by San Francisco's four-time All-Star. Bumgarner (12-7) allowed four runs over five innings and struck out six.

New York had taken a 4-0 lead in the fourth on Justin Ruggiano's second career grand slam in his first game back off the disabled list.

                    • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                      — Luke Del Rio (Jack’s son) will be Florida’s starting QB when the Gators host the Idaho Vandals in two weeks.

                      — Cubs outscored Milwaukee 23-8 in a 4-game sweep this week; they’re 9-3 against the Brewers this season.

                      — Eagles’ kicker Caleb Sturgis got a concussion last night when he was hit in the head with an errant punt….during warmups. Yikes.

                      — Former basketball player/QB Terrelle Pryor is having a good summer as a receiver with the Browns; caught a long TD from RGIII last night.

                      — Eagles 17, Steelers 0– Philly had four INTs in first half alone.

                      — I was told long time ago by a friend in Houston that Carlos Beltran never wanted to leave the Astros; his agent signed with the Mets because the agent’s cut of the pie would be bigger In NY than if Beltran had stayed in Houston.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

                      13) If you were in the outfield bleachers at a big league baseball game and you caught a home run ball that was the first career home run for a player, what would you ask for, in return for the ball?

I mean, this is the guy’s first home run ball; he is going to pay for it. It might be the one chance in your life to have a future millionaire over a barrel financially.

                      12) Most people I see on TV just ask for an autographed ball or bat; if I was a local, I might ask for season tickets for a year or two, or an autographed batting helmet from the best player on that team. It is a good chance to acquire something worth decent money.

                      11) One of the things they haven’t mentioned on Hard Knocks (yet) is that Rams’ star defensive lineman Robert Quinn is at the Olympics, cheering on his sister, who is a hurdler. Coach Jeff Fisher said “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s a really neat thing for Rob and his family. It’s the right to do to let him go down there.”

Quinn’s sister won the NCAA title as a hurdler for Kentucky. She is competing for Puerto Rico.

                      10) Rams play the Chiefs Saturday night; old friend Nick Foles is a Chief now, after the Rams chose Case Keenum as its QB over Foles and sent him on his way. Chiefs have four QBs in camp, but I’m guessing Andy Reid will try and showcase Foles a little bit in this game.

                      9) Opening lines for Friday’s Olympic basketball semifinals: Australia (-3.5) plays Serbia, the Americans (-14.5) play Spain.

                      8) Giants’ kicker Josh Brown is suspended for the opener against Dallas, apparently because of a misdemeanor domestic violence arrest that took place in May, 2015. The suspension costs Brown roughly $85,000.

If I coached the Giants, I’d use Brown’s suspension as a chance to go for 2 after every TD, just to experiment to see if it was a good idea. Never know, you might learn something valuable (or get your QB hurt).

                      7) Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine does some TV work for the Braves; he is very good– you learn stuff listening to him. He was talking about young pitchers and how body language is important, as far as letting your opponents and your teammates know if you’re confident or not. Interesting stuff.

Glavine won 305 games in his great career, but in his first two years, he was 9-17, 4.76– not very good. He caught on pretty quickly, though.

                      6) TNT will add Monday night NBA doubleheaders to its programming in the second half of the season this winter. Since ESPN doesn’t do a west coast Big Monday game anymore, the Monday late game is a good add.

                      5) Nintendo is selling the Seattle Mariners to a group of 17 Seattle-based investors. Guy named John Stanton is the CEO- he made his fortune in wireless technology.

                      4) Atlanta Falcons play Tampa Bay in Week 1 this season; it will also be coach Dan Quinn’s 46th birthday. Must be a little odd now to have your birthday on September 11, such a sad day in our country’s history.

                      3) When I went to a AAA baseball game in Las Vegas last month, they had a pitch clock behind the plate. It is more of a deterrent than anything else; if it ran out before the pitcher threw (not very often) no one did anything.

If you made a relief pitcher face at least two batters (instead of one, like it is now) would that result in fewer pitching changes and a faster game?

                      2) Red Sox TV guys hinted that the struggles of reliever Junichi Tazawa will make it a lot more likely that Boston will sign Jonathan Papelbon, who was recently released by the Nationals.

1– My second tier of favorite movies. Listed my seven favorite movies the other day; here is my second group of 7, in alphabetical order:

For the Love of the Game– Kevin Costner is a pitcher for the Tigers.
Friday Night Lights– Billy Bob Thornton is a great as a HS football coach.
Good Will Hunting– I think this was Robin Williams’ best movie.
Hoosiers– Small town high school hoop team in Indiana wins state title.
Invincible– A 30-year old bartender tries out for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last Vegas– Four childhood friends head to Las Vegas as senior citizens.
Let it Ride– A compulsive gambler has a big day at the racetrack.

Hottest team: Cubs (15-2 last 17)
Chicago is hoping that this nine-game Western journey it has embarked upon won’t slow down its tremendous August, which has seen it sweep four different opponents. Only three of their 16 games this month have come outside Wrigley Field, but the Cubs did outscore the A’s by a combined margin of 14-3 in Oakland from Aug. 5-7 and own the third-highest road winning percentage in baseball behind Washington and St. Louis. The road trip, which features series against the Padres and Dodgers, opens in Denver against the Rockies, who won two of three the only time these teams got together back in mid-April. Colorado was the first team to steal a series from the Cubs at home, a feat that has only occurred on two other occasions this season. Rookie Tyler Anderson (4-4, 3.42 ERA) was still in the minors back then and will be getting his first look at Chicago’s mighty lineup, though he has seen a few of its key guys in the minors. Cubs righty Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.19) has the second-lowest ERA in baseball behind the injured Clayton Kershaw (1.79), who may not end up with enough innings to ultimately qualify for the award if he’s not back soon. Since June 19, Hendricks is 7-1 and has given up nine earned runs over 66.1 innings, striking out 63 and walking 16. Colorado handed him his first loss of the season. The Cubs have scored at least three runs in 20 of their last 21 games, averaging 5.4 within that span. They’ve won two of three at Coors Field in each of the past two seasons.

                                Coldest team:
                                Astros (0-5 last five, 7-16 last 23)
The Astros are in danger of falling back down to .500 for the first time since June 21, when they kicked off summer by improving to 36-36, which was quite the accomplishment since they opened 17-28 through the season’s first 45 games. Their current ill-timed slump has them even with surging Kansas City and behind the fading Yankees in a ninth-place tie in the American League, 6.5 games back of a wild card spot. While there will be 40 games left after tonight’s showdown in Baltimore, Houston is running out of time to get back to the playoffs. That would be a huge disappointment since hopes were high after they unexpectedly reached last year’s postseason, taking down New York in the Wild Card before falling to the Royals in the ALDS. After closing out a four-game set at Camden Yards, Houston opens next week in Pittsburgh before returning home for winnable series against Tampa Bay and Oakland to close out August. The Astros have given up 38 runs over their last four losses as their pitching has completely broken down. The OVER has prevailed in eight of their last 11 games. Collin McHugh (7-10, 4.70) will look to snap a run of losses in four straight starts, while the Orioles hope to see Wade Miley (7-10, 5.23) notch a win for the first time since being acquired from Seattle. He’s 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in a Baltimore uniform and will be facing the Astros for the third time in 2016.

Hottest pitcher: Rick Porcello (16-3, 3.30 ERA)
The Red Sox lost a 4-3 decision in the first of a four-game set in Detroit when Junichi Tazawa and Brad Ziegler were unsuccessful in protecting an eighth-inning lead, snapping a six-game winning streak. Despite the loss, Boston remains firmly entrenched in an AL wild card spot, even with Baltimore, three games up on Seattle and 3.5 up on the Tigers. Porcello is 10-1 since May 22 and has produced four consecutive quality starts, putting him squarely in the AL Cy Young mix. He’ll be seeing his former team who he pitched for from 2009-14 for the first time this season and only the second time in his career. As a result, there are few current Tigers who have much of a history against him – Miguel Cabrera has never faced him – although Ian Kinsler is 7-for-13. The newly acquired Erick Aybar (5-for-27) has opposed Porcello most, and no current player on the Detroit roster has a home run against him. He’ll be part of Friday’s top pitching matchup, squaring off against rookie Michael Fulmer (10-3, 2.25), who is third in all of baseball in ERA and comes off a career-best performance last Sunday, tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout at Texas. Books slightly favor Detroit (-110) at home and have set the total at 8.5.

Coldest pitcher: Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.97 ERA)
A little over a month ago, Cueto was 13-1 and in the running for the NL’s Cy Young award, even starting the All-Star Game in San Diego. Former teammates Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez each homered off him in the second inning, resulting in a loss that didn’t count against his record, but began a run that hasn’t ended yet since victory has eluded him since July 6. Cueto was in position to have the winless streak snapped last Sunday, but watched Baltimore rally from a 7-1 deficit over the last three innings to win 8-7. The Giants are 2-4 in his last six starts. Including the All-Star debacle, Cueto has given up multiple home runs in five of his last nine outings after not having that happen over a span of 25 starts, which includes his work helping the Royals win last year’s World Series. Cueto will be facing the Mets for the first time since Game 2 of the Fall Classic, where he delivered a complete game two-hitter in a 9-1 win. New York has lost three of its last four and scratched lefty Steven Matz from Friday’s start due to shoulder discomfort. Rookie Seth Lugo (0-1, 2.65), who has worked 17 innings exclusively out of the bullpen since being called up for the first time on July 1, gets the call for the Mets, who are 1-8 when he’s taken the mound.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (5-0 last five, 14-3-1 last 18)
The bar has been set at 8.5 or higher in all but one of the 17 games encompassed in Texas’ under run, but those chasing the OVER based on all the firepower the Rangers have assembled after acquiring Carlos Beltran and Jonathan Lucroy at the trade deadline are likely broke by now. Although there was a prolonged slump in there against the Tigers where they failed to score a run in consecutive games, improved pitching has also contributed to this under run. The Rangers are 14-5 over their last 19 and have improved on the AL’s best record as result, but keeping their focus on this brief five-game road trip that starts tonight could be an issue. After a three-game set in Tampa Bay, Texas will play two in Cincinnati before returning to Arlington for an immense 10-game homestand against the Indians, Mariners and Astros. Cole Hamels (12-4, 2.88) aims to get his team off to a good start and has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last six outings. Although he’s yet to win a decision in August despite an ERA of 3.15, Hamels has been a rock for the Rangers, coming in 19-5 since being acquired just prior to the 2015 trade deadline. The UNDER has prevailed in five of Hamels’ six starts since the All-Star break, but he’s pitching at Tropicana Field for the first time since winning Game 1 of the 2008 World Series for Philadelphia en route to MVP honors. He’s only seen the Rays once this decade, shutting them out over seven innings in June 2012. Matt Andriese (6-4, 3.36) has limited experience against Texas hitters and has seen the OVER prevail in three of his last four starts. He hasn’t won a decision since June 15, making 13 straight appearances without a win. Books have set this total at 7.5.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (10-0-2 last 12, 12-1-2 last 15)
The number has been right on over the last two Phillies games against the Dodgers, as Thursday’s 5-4 win produced nine runs for the second consecutive night to push for totals bettors. Oddsmakers have definitely adjusted since the figure would’ve likely been 8.5 if not for the fact that Philadelphia has still seen only one UNDER come in this entire month. Only one of the Phils' last 10 games at Citizens Bank Park has gone UNDER the posted total, a run that dates back to July 21. St. Louis comes into town on an OVER run of its own, as the posted total has been surpassed in nine of its last 11 games, including each of the last five. Since July 27, the OVER has gone 15-4-1 over the Cardinals' last 20 games. The Cards have averaged 7.5 runs on their current four-game winning streak that has them in control of the NL's second wild card. Adan Wainwright (9-7, 4.72) lasted a season-low two innings last Friday night at Wrigley Field, surrendering a season-high seven runs. The OVER has hit in each of his last five starts. Phillies lefty Adam Morgan (1-7, 6.62) was sent down to Triple-A for over a month and lasted just three innings in his return on Sunday. THE OVER has prevailed in each of the last nine games Morgan has appeared in. His lone win came on May 10 in Atlanta. Oddsmakers have set this total back up at 9.

Matchup to watch: Blue Jays at Indians
While every other division leader plays a sub-.500 team this weekend, Toronto and Cleveland square off at Progressive Field in what could wind up being a crucial weekend. The Indians hold a one-game lead over the Jays due to two fewer losses, but the winner of this series opener will reach the 70-win plateau first and whoever claims the three-game set would temporarily put themselves in position to potentially host the other in an NLDS if the Rangers wind up securing the AL’s top record. Cleveland has a much healthier division lead in the AL Central than Toronto enjoys over Baltimore and Boston, but this series should still feature a postseason feel since no other team scheduled to visit Cleveland between now and the end of the regular-season is currently a playoff team. These teams played a contentious four-game set up in Canada to open July that featured a 19-inning 2-1 Indians win that the Blue Jays recovered from by outscoring the Tribe 26-7 over the final two games, including a 17-1 rout in their last encounter. Lefty Francisco Liriano (6-12, 5.46) takes the ball first for Toronto and is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA since coming over from Pittsburgh. Favored Cleveland (-127) will ride Trevor Bauer (9-5, 3.97), who started that aforementioned 19-inning marathon on July 1, allowing two hits over five shutout innings. He’s won his last two decisions.

Betcha didn’t know: Atlanta's Julio Teheran (3-9, 2.81) hasn't allowed a run in four of his last seven starts and returns from the disabled list tonight after having his back tighten up in his last outing on July 30. The Colombian right-hander was just 1-2 in May despite a 1.38 ERA, went 2-2 in June even though his ERA that month was 1.91. He ended up a 4.08 in July and lost both of his decisions, but had a 15-inning scoreless streak snapped in his last start. The Braves have scored four or more runs in just six of his 21 starts. His three wins have all come away from Turner Field, where he's 0-5 despite a 3.08 ERA over 12 starts. Washington, who Teheran is 0-1 against this season over two April starts, will counter with Tanner Roark (13-6, 2.81), who has allowed just five earned runs over his last 27.1 innings and won 10 of his last 12 decisions.
