DENVER (AP) Nolan Arenado broke out of a slump in a big way, hitting two homers and driving in six runs Sunday to boost the Colorado Rockies over the Chicago Cubs 11-4.

Arenado hit a three-run homer during a seven-run burst in the first inning that included three Cubs errors, then added another three-run drive in the fourth.

Arenado leads the majors with 104 RBIs - he had a big league-high 130 last year - and tops the NL with 32 home runs. The All-Star third baseman was 1 of 16 on the Rockies' homestand before getting four hits. He passed Cubs slugger Kris Bryant for the NL homer lead.

Jorge De La Rosa (8-7) tossed eight innings, giving up a pair of home runs to Addison Russell.

De La Rosa delivered a two-run single in the first as the Rockies quickly ended Jason Hammel's 22-inning scoreless streak. Hammel (13-6) had been 6-0 with an 0.95 ERA since the All-Star before getting roughed up. The Rockies scored 10 runs off him, six earned, in 3 1/3 innings.

DJ LeMahieu also homered for Colorado.

              DODGERS 4, REDS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Chase Utley homered on the fourth pitch of the game, 20-year-old Julio Urias won his third straight decision and Los Angeles beat Cincinnati to end a three-game losing streak.

Los Angeles moved into the NL West lead, a half-game ahead of San Francisco.

Utley connected against Anthony DeSclafani (7-2) for his third home run of the trip and 11th this season, then had an RBI single in the third and scored on Cory Seager's hit for a 3-0 lead. Utley homered twice Tuesday at Philadelphia, his former team.

Urias (4-2) allowed six hits, struck out six and walked none, throwing 62 of 97 pitches for strikes. He didn't allow a runner past first base until the sixth inning despite giving up two hits in an inning three times. Urias picked off Jose Peraza at first and got Ivan De Jesus Jr. to ground into a double play.

Urias beat Philadelphia in his previous start on Aug. 8, then defeated Pittsburgh in relief five days later. Joe Blanton, Pedro Baez and Kenley Jansen each followed with an inning of one-hit relief.

              METS 2, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Noah Syndergaard and Jeurys Familia combined on a three-hitter and Yoenis Cespedes homered off Jeff Samardzija, leading New York past San Francisco.

Cespedes homered for the third time in two days to help split the four-game series. It also was the 900th victory of manager Terry Collins' career, making him the 10th active manager to reach the milestone.

Syndergaard (11-7) allowed two hits over eight innings for his second consecutive victory.

Samardzija (10-9) held the Mets hitless until Curtis Granderson's leadoff double in the seventh. Cespedes followed with his 25th home run, a two-run blast that appeared to clear the stands in left field.

Familia retired three batters for his major league-leading 41st save.

              ROYALS 2, TWINS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Danny Duffy won his 10th straight decision, Eric Hosmer doubled in the go-ahead run and Kansas City beat Minnesota for its eighth consecutive win.

The Royals swept a four-game series from the Twins for the first time since 1999 and have their longest winning streak since an eight-game run Aug. 3-11, 2014.

Duffy (11-1), unbeaten since June 6, improved to 5-0 with a 1.18 ERA in August. He left after 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run and a season-high eight hits while walking two and striking out four.

He outpitched Twins right-hander Ervin Santana (6-10), who allowed two runs and five hits while striking out 10 and walking one over seven innings.

Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

              CARDINALS 9, PHILLIES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Leake pitched seven strong innings and hit a two-run single and St. Louis homered four times to rout Philadelphia.

Jedd Gyorko, Stephen Piscotty, Brandon Moss and Jeremy Hazelbaker went deep. The Cardinals had hit multiple home runs in nine straight games, tying a major league record, before failing to connect Saturday night in a 4-2 loss. Jhonny Peralta added three hits as the Cardinals finished a 6-3 trip. They remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Miami for the final wild-card spot in the National League.

The Cardinals got six extra-base hits to set a club record of 14 straight games with at least three extra-base hits.

Leake (9-9) gave up seven hits and struck out eight. Philadelphia had homered in 14 straight games before getting blanked by Leake and two relievers. Vince Velasquez (8-6) fell to 0-4 with a 6.23 ERA in his last seven starts.

              BRAVES 7, NATIONALS 6, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Jace Peterson hit a tiebreaking homer in the 10th inning off Shawn Kelley to lift Atlanta past Washington in a game delayed 1 hour, 4 minutes in the bottom of the eighth.

Kelley (1-2) hung his head and walked toward the dugout as soon as Peterson made contact with his seventh homer. Kelley gave up one hit and one run in two-thirds of an inning.

Joel Ramirez (1-0) faced four batters in the 10th to earn the win.

Four of Washington's five errors led to runs for the Braves.

Matt Kemp homered for Atlanta, and Bryce Harper and Chris Heisey connected for Washington.

              ASTROS 5, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dallas Keuchel was solid through eight innings, Yulieski Gurriel got a hit in his major league debut and Houston beat Baltimore in a rain-delayed game.

The Astros won the last three games in the four-game series, outscoring Baltimore 32-13 over that stretch. The slumping Orioles have lost four of five and are 9-16 over their past 25 games.

Keuchel (8-12), last year's Cy Young Award winner, allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts. Ken Giles picked up his third save after allowing Mark Trumbo major league-leading 37th home run.

Baltimore's Yovani Gallardo (4-5) allowed four runs and seven hits over seven innings.

The start of the game was delayed for 4 hours, 5 minutes because of storms. Another downpour at the end of the first inning prompted an additional 30-minute interruption.

              Jake Marisnick homered for Houston.

              MARLINS 3, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Christian Yelich homered in the first inning, Miami added a pair of unearned runs and the Marlins rallied past Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep.

Jose Urena (2-4) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings to help the Marlins sweep a series for the sixth time this season.

Fernando Rodney completed the five-hitter, working around a two-out walk in the ninth. Rodney retired Francisco Cervelli on a game-ending groundout for his third save of the series and 24th this season.

Miami went 6-1 this year against the Pirates and moved ahead of Pittsburgh in the NL wild-card race. Wearing 1970s throwback uniforms and caps, the Pirates (62-59) dropped 1 1/2 games back of Miami.

Ryan Vogelsong (2-3) gave up three runs and three hits in six innings.

              TIGERS 10, RED SOX 5

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Upton hit two three-run homers and struggling Detroit finished its homestand with victory over Boston and fill-in starter Henry Owen.

The Tigers won for just the fourth time in 14 games, and went 2-5 on their stay at Comerica Park. Boston has lost just two of its last 10.

Justin Verlander (13-7) allowed one run on three hits in six innings before being pulled with a nine-run lead. He's 6-1 in his last 10 starts.

Owens (0-1) didn't find out he was pitching until late Saturday night and didn't arrive in Detroit from Triple-A until the early morning hours. He gave up eight runs on six hits and five walks in five innings. Eduardo Rodriguez was scratched from the start late Saturday night. He was expected to return from a hamstring injury to pitch, but felt discomfort during the game. Owens was summoned from Pawtucket.

              INDIANS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer off Brett Cecil in the eighth inning and Cleveland beat Toronto to win the series between teams that began the game as AL division leaders.

The Indians took two of three, with each game decided by one run.

Ahead 2-1, Toronto threatened to break open the game in the seventh. But Mike Clevinger (2-1) relieved Corey Kluber and struck out major league RBIs leader Edwin Encarnacion to leave the bases loaded.

Ramirez connected after Francisco Lindor's two-out single, sending a drive onto the home run porch in left field. Cecil (1-7) replaced starter Marcus Stroman with one out in the eighth.

Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 24th save in 27 chances. He struck out Ryan Goins and Devon Travis before walking Josh Donaldson and Encarnacion. Russell Martin lined out to right to end it.

Melvin Upton Jr. led off the third with his third home run for Toronto since being acquired from San Diego at the trade deadline.

              ANGELS 2, YANKEES 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols had three hits and scored twice on singles by Andrelton Simmons, leading Los Angeles past New York.

Jhoulys Chacin (4-8) allowed six hits over 5 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked one in his first scoreless start since April 12 for Atlanta. Deolis Guerra, JC Ramirez and Fernando Salas followed with hitless relief. Salas pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

After winning the first two games of the series, New York entered four games over .500 at 61-57, but for the fourth time failed to move five games over.

Chad Green (2-3) allowed one run and five hits in six innings, which matched his big league high. He struck out 11 in six scoreless innings against Toronto on Monday when he rejoined the rotation.

              WHITE SOX 4, ATHLETICS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Quintana pitched into the eighth innings for his career-best 10th win and Jose Abreu homered for the second straight game to lead Chicago past Oakland.

Todd Frazier had three hits and drove in two runs, and Justin Morneau added an RBI double in Chicago's three-run first as the White Sox took the final two games of the series and handed Oakland its seventh loss in eight games. Tim Anderson also had three hits.

Oakland's Khris Davis hit his 32nd homer, a two-run shot off Quintana (10-9). The left-hander struck out six, walked one and allowed eight hits.

David Robertson got the last three outs for his 32nd save. Zach Neal (2-3) was the loser.

              RAYS 8, RANGERS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Logan Forsythe homered after missing four games because of back spasms, and Tampa Bay beat Texas to take two of three from the AL West-leading Rangers.

Forsythe hit an opposite-field, three-run shot off Martin Perez (8-9) in a five-run fourth that made it 6-2. He has six homers in his last 10 games.

Steven Souza Jr. put the Rays up 8-4 on a two-run homer in the eighth.

Drew Smyly (6-11) allowed four runs and five hits over 6 2/3 inning to go 4-0 in his last six starts.

Tampa Bay, last in the AL East, has won six of seven.

Delino DeShields and Drew Stubbs homered for Texas.

              BREWERS 7, MARINERS 6

SEATTLE (AP) - Keon Broxton and Chris Carter homered and Scooter Gennett had an RBI single during a four-run ninth inning, and Milwaukee beat Seattle to end a six-game losing streak.

The Brewers trailed 6-3 after eight innings but rallied against Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4). Broxton hit his second solo homer of the game and Carter followed with a two-run shot, his 29th, to tie it.

After Domingo Santana singled, Vidal Nuno relieved Wilhelmsen and allowed a single to Manny Pina. Gennett then blooped a single into left-center that scored Santana from second.

Tyler Thornburg (5-4) pitched the final two innings for the win. Matt Garza (4-6) was the loser.

              PADRES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Luis Perdomo ended a three-start losing streak, Travis Jankowski and Alex Dickerson homered, and San Diego beat Arizona for a four-game split.

Perdomo (6-7) took a shutout into the seventh and wound up allowing an unearned run and five hits in seven innings. Perdomo, a right-hander who had never pitched above Class A before this season, also beat the Diamondbacks at Arizona on July 4.

Braden Shipley (2-3) gave up seven runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in a matchup of the teams with the poorest records in the NL West.

From 2003-09, Miami Dolphins had seven different #1 QBs:

                — 2003– Jay Fiedler– Dartmouth alum; only other one I can think of as an NFL QB– Jeff Kemp.

                — 2004– AJ Feeley– Lasted eleven years in the NFL.

                — 2005– Gus Frerotte– Year 1 of the Nick Saban era in Miami
                — 2006– Joey Harrington– Saban turned down Drew Brees, on doctor’s advice that he wouldn’t hold up
                physically. Whoops.

                — 2007– Cleo Lemon– Started eight NFL games; won one of them.

                — 2008– Chad Pennington– This list is one reason why Miami hasn’t won a playoff game since 2000.

                — 2009– Chad Henne– This is why a team like the Rams pays a king’s ransom to locate a franchise QB– without one, people get fired.

                11) Houston Cougars are in preseason top 25 for first time since 1991; they open against Oklahoma, so we’ll find out pretty quickly if they belong in the top 25- they do have a very good senior QB.

                10) Spain 89, Australia 88– Bronze medal games are fiercely fought; you get a medal if you win, nada if you lose. Aussies are now 0-4 in bronze medal games, but their basketball program is on the rise.

                9) Pitchers who get drafted by the Colorado Rockies every June must want to puke when they get selected; who wants to pitch there, unless you’re an extreme ground ball pitcher? Someday, Colorado is going to hire an ex-pitcher as a manager- not sure if that would help, though.

                8) San Francisco Giants have been out-homered 48-26 since All-Star break.

                7) Why do some umpires (Tom Hallion comes to mind) show off when they call strike 3 on a hitter, but they never do when it is ball 4?

                6) Back in June, Arizona prospect Pete O’Brien was hitting .330 in AAA, just killing the ball; D’backs called him up, made a little bit of a fuss over him and put him in leftfield for a while.

Then major league pitchers started throwing curveballs.

O’Brien went 7-57 with 25 strikeouts and was sent back to AAA, where he has since hit .160 with 65 strikeouts in 155 PA. Talking about screwing up a prospect- the offseason can’t get here quick enough for this guy. He is 26, not exactly young for a minor leaguer– we hope he bounces back.

                5) Felix Hernandez hurt his calf Memorial Day weekend, went on the DL; Seattle went 19-28 while he was gone. Since King Felix came back, M’s are 19-10, even after blowing a big 9th-inning lead to Milwaukee Sunday. He solidifies their rotation, gives them innings, rests the bullpen.

                4) Showtime is doing a reality show on Florida State football this fall; they did one on Notre Dame last season. Seminoles are opening against Ole Miss with a redshirt freshman QB starting- that could be dicey.

                3) Seven teams got at least one vote for #1 in the first college football top 25 poll.

                2) One thing to remember about betting on these NFL exhibition games; lot of times, the teams practice against each other during the week, so games can be more contentious than you might expect. Plus, there is some familiarity to what teams run, as far as offense/defense.

Preseason games are for coaches, to make decisions on rosters, and for the players trying to stick on the end of those rosters. They’re not for star players or for handicappers/gamblers– too much guesswork involved.

                1) Take Jeff Fisher, for example; he held Jared Goff out of the second half of the first preseason game, then played him for almost three quarters in this week’s game, when he expressly said he was not going to do either one of those things. If you don’t know who is going to play, how do you wager on the game?

I’ll go to my grave saying betting on preseason games is a bad idea.

                          • Monday's Diamond Notes
                            August 22, 2016

Hottest team: Red Sox (8-2 past 10)

The Red Sox split their four-game set at Comerica Park against the Tigers, outscoring them 21-18. The Red Sox head down to St. Petersburg to battle the Rays, looking to improve on their 5-2 mark during the current road odyssey. The Red Sox have crawled to within a half-game of the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, and they might be in first all alone if not for the pesky Rays. The Red Sox did pull off a three-game sweep last time the sides met at Fenway July 8-10, but are just 5-4 overall against Tampa this season. David Price faces his former team looking to keep the Red Sox on the right path, but Boston is just 1-5 in his past six road outings, and 2-5 in his past seven starts overall.

Coldest team: Brewers (1-6 past seven, 5-13 past 18)

The Brewers pumped the brakes on a six-game skid, salvaging the series finale at Safeco Field against the Mariners Sunday. Milwaukee returns home to face a Colorado team which is just 1-5 over their past six road games, but 7-1 in Chad Bettis' past eight starts. The Rockies are 6-2 in their past eight road outings against a team with a winning home record, but 11-24 in their past 35 against the NL Central. Milwaukee has won just one of their past seven, and they're 2-12 in Jimmy Nelson's past 14 outings while going 0-6 in his past six tries against NL West foes. Colorado has won six of the past seven meetings overall, including each of their past four in Cream City.

Hottest pitcher: Jon Lester, Cubs (13-4, 2.86 ERA)

Lester entered the season with bone chips in his elbow and the potential of an injury at anytime. Luckily for the Cubs, the issue has become a non-factor and he is a large part of the team's outstanding run for the pennant. Lester has been even more efficient lately, going 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over his past three outings, striking out 21 and walking just three over the past 19 2/3 innings. The Cubs take on the Padres looking to improve on their 16-5 mark over the past 21 starts by Lester. They're also a perfect 8-0 in his past eight road outings against teams with a losing overall record, for which San Diego certainly qualifies.

Coldest pitcher: Stephen Strasburg, Nationals (15-4, 3.59 ERA)

The way things were going a few weeks ago, no one would ever have expected to see Strasburg on this list. He had one loss in his first 16 decisions after a win Aug. 1. However, he has been trampled over his past three outings, suffering three straight losses, while posting a dismal 14.66 ERA and 2.57 WHIP with six walks over his past 11 2/3 innings. The Nationals have won just three of their past 12 against the Orioles, and they're 5-11 in their past 16 trips to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (6-0 past six, 12-3 past 15)

The Athletics have struggled offensively, scoring three or fewer runs in three of their past four, and 11 of the past 16 outings. The A's will welcome an Indians team which is also on an 'under' run, cashing in six of the past eight road games. The under is also 6-1 in Carlos Carrasco's past seven road outings, and seven of the past nine road starts by Carrasco against a team with a losing overall record. The under is 4-1 in Oakland's past five against teams with a winning record, 19-7-1 in their past 27 home games agaisnt a right-handed starter and 15-5-1 in their past 21 home games against Cleveland.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-2 past seven, 7-1 past eight at home)

The Padres pitching staff has been terrible lately, allowing 45 runs over the past eight outings, and five or more runs in nine of the past 15 games. The last thing their pitching staff needs is a visit from the high-octane Chicago Cubs, a team which is 19-5 over the past 24 games while scoring six or more runs in four of the past five. The Cubs have managed four or more runs in 11 straight games, which certainly bodes well for the 'over'. The over is 2-1 in three meetings this season, and 7-3-1 in the past 11 battles between the two sides.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Braves

Two ice-cold teams meet in the desert when the Diamondbacks and Braves hook up. After a bit of a revival, the Braves have dropped seven of their past eight overall, including seven straight against right-handed starting pitchers. They're also 18-48 in their past 66 games against National League West opponents. For the Diamondbacks, they're 8-17 in their past 25 home games. However, Zack Godley is the difference in this one, as the Snakes are 5-0 in his past five outings against a team with a losing record, while going 5-2 over his past seven home outings and 9-4 in his past 13 starts overall.

Betcha didn’t know: Safeco Field has been an oasis for the New York Yankees in recent seasons, as the Bronx Bombers are 14-3 in their past 17 trips to the Pacific Northwest. The Yankees have won nine of the past 12 meetings against the Mariners overall. Both of these teams have been hot lately, with New York winning four of their past five road games. Michael Pineda faces his original team, and he is enjoying his hottest stretch of the season. The Yankees are 4-1 in his past five starts against a team with a winning record. The M's are 7-1 in their past eight home games against a right-handed starter while going 5-1 in their past six against teams with a winning record and 10-3 in their past 13 against right-handed starting pitchers.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-195) at Padres

Biggest public underdog: Astros (+160) at Pirates

Biggest line move: Braves (+165 to +145) at Diamondbacks

                            • LEADING OFF: Tie for NL batting lead, Strasburg vs Bundy
                              August 22, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                              EVEN RACE

DJ LeMahieu has a chance to take sole possession of the NL batting lead when Colorado opens a series in Milwaukee. LeMahieu and Washington's Daniel Murphy are tied at .345 - both are 150 for 435 - after LeMahieu went 14 for 20 during the Rockies' recent homestand.

                              BELTWAY SERIES

Washington's Stephen Strasburg and Baltimore's Dylan Bundy square off in an interleague battle of playoff contenders. Strasburg began the season 13-0 but is just 2-4 since, and last time out, he allowed nine runs in 1 2/3 innings in a loss at Coors Field. Bundy is making his eighth start since finally getting a shot in the O's rotation, and he's 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA in that time.

                              RAYS LEFTIES OLD AND NEW

Left-hander David Price returns to Tampa Bay to face his old team and their latest up-and-coming lefty, Blake Snell. Price is 35-30 career with a 2.92 ERA at Tropicana Field, and he and the Red Sox lost 4-0 when he pitched there on June 29. Snell is a hard-throwing rookie finding success early in his big league career, posting a 2.83 ERA over his past eight starts.

CARRASCO AT HOME ON THE ROAD

Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco has a 1.97 ERA on the road and pitches at Oakland in the first game of a three-game series. Carrasco has allowed at least one homer in five straight starts and has a 6.23 ERA in that time. The A's are looking for better luck with righty Andrew Triggs starting - Oakland is 1-20 when the rookie has pitched this season, including 0-3 in three starts.

                              TO THE SHOWERS

Fans in Baltimore, Cincinnati and other ballparks around the majors and minors are hoping the clouds clear away. Rain forced delays in several spots over the weekend, including a four-hour wait at Camden Yards before the Orioles hosted the Astros.
