      • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: A Giant Problem for the Dodgers

The two teams to beat in the National League West go toe-to-toe this week as the San Francisco Giants visit the Los Angeles Dodgers in a pivotal three-game set beginning Tuesday.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including a pivotal series in Los Angeles between the Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.

        Trends Collide

Recent history isn’t offering much help to bettors Monday as David Price leads the Boston Red Sox into the opener of a four-game series with his former club, the Tampa Bay Rays. Price has been a sensational Over play of late, with each of his last four starts exceeding the total. But that run will be put to the test Monday, as he has seen six of his last starts against American League East foes play to the Under. That said, counterpart Blake Snell has gone Over in five of his last seven home starts.

A Giant Problem for the Dodgers

The two teams to beat in the National League West go toe-to-toe this week as the San Francisco Giants visit the Los Angeles Dodgers in a pivotal three-game set beginning Tuesday. This series takes on a completely different complexion with the absence of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, who remains on the shelf with a herniated disc in his back. Los Angeles has won each of his three starts versus the Giants this season, but has dropped six of seven meetings when Kershaw hasn’t started.

        Hanging in There

The Miami Marlins are doing their best to remain in the National League playoff race without their premier slugger. Giancarlo Stanton is still out of the lineup as the Marlins kick off a three-game interleague series with the visiting Kansas City Royals, but Miami has held its own, going 5-3 while winning 307 units since since Stanton was sidelined with a groin injury. And Marlins president of baseball operations believes Stanton will return to the lineup at some point prior to the end of the regular season.

        Hitting Stats

        * Good luck to the San Diego Padres this week, who are tasked with slowing down Chicago Cubs slugger Kris Bryant. The 24-year-old had 14 hits in 29 at-bats last week, swatting three home runs and driving in 11 while pushing his average above the .300 mark for the first time since May 5.

        * A little time off appears to have done Bryce Harper some good. The Washington Nationals star has been sensational since missing five games earlier in the month, hitting a pair of homers and driving in 11 runs in his past eight games. The Nats are 5-3 SU and 6-2 O/U in that span.

        Pitching Stats

        * Chris Archer will look to climb out of the money cellar Tuesday night as he leads the Rays against the visiting Red Sox. It has been a nightmare season for Archer, who was fifth in Cy Young voting last season but is 7-16 with a 4.18 ERA and a league-worst -$1,228 in 26 starts.

        * Looking for an early-week parlay? Consider taking Washington’s Stephen Strasburg and the Over as he and the Nationals square off against the rival Baltimore Orioles. The Strasburg-Over play has succeeded in 13 of his 23 starts this season, though he has dropped three in a row.

        Totals Trend

The St. Louis Cardinals continued their run as one of the league’s top road Over plays Sunday with a 9-0 drubbing of the host Philadelphia Phillies. That wrapped up a 6-3 O/U road trip for the Cardinals while improving them to 37-22-3 O/U away from St. Louis for the season.

        Monday's Weather Report

The weather looks perfect in all Major League cities who are hosting games Monday, with the exception of Phoenix who are expecting some thunderstorms this evening - but Chase Field has a roof so it won't matter.

Mother Nature will not be impacting any MLB games today.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) David Price limited his old team to two hits in eight scoreless innings, helping the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 on Monday night to move into a tie for first place in the AL East.

Price (12-8) walked two, struck out eight and didn't allow a runner past first base while extending Tampa Bay's scoring drought against Boston to 25 innings dating to a series at Fenway Park before the All-Star break. Evan Longoria stopped the streak with a two-run homer off Matt Barnes in the ninth.

Blake Snell (4-6) allowed two runs and needed 94 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings.

The victory was the ninth in 11 games for the Red Sox and lifted them into a tie with Toronto, which was idle Monday.

            ORIOLES 4, NATIONALS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 38th home run, Jonathan Schoop also went deep and Baltimore won a matchup between neighboring contenders.

Rookie Dylan Bundy (7-4) pitched six innings of three-hit ball for the Orioles, who had lost five of their previous six games - all at home. The victory lifted Baltimore within two games of first-place Toronto and Boston in the AL East.

Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth for his 38th save. The left-hander has not allowed an earned run in 43 games since May 5.

The Orioles did all their scoring against A.J. Cole (0-1) in his season debut. Cole was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace scheduled starter Stephen Strasburg, who was placed on the 15-day disabled.

            DODGERS 18, REDS 9

CINCINNATI (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez hit three of the Dodgers' seven homers - driving in a career-high eight runs - and rookie Corey Seager had a noteworthy homer as well.

The NL West leaders enjoyed their biggest home run splurge in 10 years. They've won 10 of their last 12 games against Cincinnati.

Gonzalez started it with a three-run shot in the first inning off Homer Bailey (2-2), who had his worst showing since returning from Tommy John surgery. The first baseman also had a solo shot in the fifth, when the Dodgers connected four times overall.

Gonzalez's three-run shot in the seventh tied his career high for homers.

Joey Votto singled home a run off reliever Jesse Chavez (1-0), one of his four RBIs.

            INDIANS 1, ATHLETICS 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Carrasco and Andrew Miller combined on a four-hitter, Carlos Santana homered in the eighth inning and Cleveland beat Oakland.

Carrasco (9-6) was masterful while limiting the A's to four hits over eight innings. The right-hander had nine strikeouts, retired the side in order five times and allowed only one runner to reach second base.

Miller struck out the side in the ninth for his 11th save.

Neither team did much offensively until Santana's one-out home run off reliever Ryan Dull (5-4), his 27th of the season.

            CUBS 5, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Jason Heyward all homered to back Jon Lester's strong outing for Chicago.

Bryant's solo shot in the fifth inning was his 32nd of the year, tying him with Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the National League lead.

Lester (14-4) limited the Padres to a run and five hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two in winning for the 10th time in his last 11 decisions.

Edwin Jackson (3-4) gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings.

            MARINERS 7, YANKEES 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Mike Zunino and Kyle Seager each hit a three-run homer and Nelson Cruz added a solo shot as Seattle rallied to beat New York.

The Yankees got two homers apiece from rookie catcher Gary Sanchez and Starlin Castro, but three of them were solo shots.

Zunino, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on July 20, answered in the bottom half with his ninth home run - off Anthony Swarzak (1-2) - to put Seattle ahead 6-5.

Nick Vincent (3-3) retired all three batters he faced, and rookie Edwin Diaz survived a shaky ninth for his 10th save in 10 chances.

            ASTROS 3, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Doug Fister pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball, Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run homer and Houston beat Pittsburgh.

Hernandez connected off fellow rookie Jameson Taillon (3-3) in the fifth inning after A.J. Reed's leadoff walk.

Alex Bregman, another Astros rookie, hit his fourth homer in the ninth inning off Neftali Feliz.

Fister struck out six, walked one and retired 11 of the first 12 batters.

Ken Giles got his fourth save despite allowing David Freese's RBI single in the ninth.

            DIAMONDBACKS 9, BRAVES 8

PHOENIX (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer in the ninth inning to lift Arizona over Atlanta.

Goldschmidt hit his 19th homer off John Gant (1-3) deep into the left-field seats to lead off the inning, helping Arizona overcome a five-run deficit and a two-homer night from Freddie Freeman.

Freeman hit a solo homer off Enrique Burgos (1-1) to tie it in the ninth.

            BREWERS 4, ROCKIES 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chris Carter homered and Jimmy Nelson won for the first time in seven starts.

Nelson (7-13) gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Carter's solo homer to left in the third, his 30th of the season, off Chad Bettis (10-7) extended Milwaukee's lead to 4-1.

              OLYMPICS

Ryan Lochte lost three major sponsors when swimsuit company Speedo USA, clothing giant Ralph Lauren and skin-care firm Syneron-Candela announced in quick succession they were dumping the swimmer over a drunken incident during the Rio Olympics that he initially described as an armed robbery.

Speedo USA also said it would donate $50,000 of Lochte's fee to Save The Children to benefit needy youngsters in Brazil.

Initially, Lochte said he and three swimming teammates were robbed after their taxi was pulled over by armed men posing as police the night after the swimming competition ended in Rio de Janeiro.

He has since apologized for embellishing his version of events.

The financial costs of losing Speedo and Ralph Lauren are likely to be only the first sanctions that await Lochte, whose night of partying ended up tarnishing the reputation of the American team and dominating news away from the stadiums and arenas in the final days of the Rio Games that closed Sunday night.

              CARACAS, Venezuela (AP)
None of Venezuela's 87 Olympic athletes won gold this year, but they're getting another prize - new homes from the government.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that all the country's participants in the Olympics will get free housing upon their return from Rio de Janeiro. The apartments are part of the government housing program that is a cornerstone of the country's socialist revolution.

Maduro says this way the athletes will feel the love of their country.

Venezuela won three medals at the Rio Olympics: silver in the triple jump, bronze in boxing and bronze in BMX cycling.

              MMA

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Conor McGregor has received a medical suspension of up to six months following his five-round victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

McGregor outpointed Diaz in a bloody, tiring slugfest Saturday and came out with issues in his foot and ankle, including a possible fracture, and also said after the fight that his shin was sore from landing so many kicks. He hobbled into his post-fight press conference on crutches and needed assistance walking out.

The medical suspensions aren't uncommon. McGregor can have his waived if he is cleared by an orthopedic doctor. Otherwise, he's unable to train with contact until Oct. 5 and is suspended from fighting until Oct. 20, when he can be re-evaluated.

Diaz came out of the fight with his face bloodied and swollen but was only issued a 30-day suspension.

McGregor and Diaz both called for a third match between the pair, though UFC has insisted that McGregor first drop down to defend his featherweight title.

              BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Dwight Gooden has denied Darryl Strawberry's accusation that he is ''a complete junkie-addict,'' saying his former teammate is just taking it personally that Gooden couldn't make a scheduled public appearance with Strawberry last week.

Strawberry told the New York Daily News that Gooden skipped an event organized by radio station WFAN and he worried Gooden has been using cocaine. Strawberry told the newspaper that Gooden's son called him to beg him to help his father before he dies, adding that ''the condition Doc is in, it's bad.''

Gooden says in a statement that he hasn't done cocaine in years. He apologized for Strawberry's ''inability to show more character and strength,'' saying ''he obviously was never there for me.'' Gooden claims he has always supported Strawberry, ''during his best and worst days.''

Gooden and Strawberry won back-to-back Rookie of the Year awards for the New York Mets in 1983 and `84. Drug abuse cut short both of their careers.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Athletics fined Billy Butler and Danny Valencia after they were involved in a clubhouse fight last week that led to Butler being placed on the seven-day concussion list.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Butler and Valencia began fighting over comments Butler made to an equipment representative prior to a game Friday at the Chicago White Sox. During the exchange, Valencia hit Butler in the temple before teammates stepped in to end the altercation.

Butler sat out the series in Chicago with headaches and nausea.

A's general manager David Forst said Oakland - among the worst teams in the American League - would not suspend the players.

              FOOTBALL

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Former USC and Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich has been arrested after being found naked with marijuana and possibly methamphetamine in a stranger's backyard in Southern California.

Irvine Police Cmdr. Mike Hallinan said that Marinovich was arrested Friday night after a call saying a naked man was on a hiking trail near homes. The officers found him in a backyard holding a brown bag containing marijuana and a substance that appeared to be meth but police are awaiting lab results.

The 47-year-old Marinovich was a star quarterback at USC and the Raiders' first-round draft pick in 1991, but drug problems drove him from the NFL after two seasons and he has had repeated run-ins with the law over drugs in the decades since.

Contact information for Marinovich or an attorney who could comment for him could not immediately be found.

              • Armadillo:Tuesday's six-pack

                — Conor MacGregor has a broken bone in his foot/ankle and could be out of UFC for as much as six months.

                — Josh Reddick is hitting .152 for the Dodgers; this week he jammed a finger while ordering room service in the hotel. Seriously.

                — Of the 29 major league GMs (Miami’s GM job is listed as vacant), 11 went to Ivy League schools as undergraduates.

                — Four other GMs went to MIT, Amherst or Wesleyan.

                — Arizona’s Dave Stewart is only current GM who didn’t go to college.

                — Indy CB Vontae Davis has ligament damage in his ankle, might miss the first month of the season. Colts signed Antonio Cromartie to help take his place.

                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                13) Kind of ironic that Gregg Popovich is the new US Olympic basketball coach; nucleus of the Spurs’ team that made him rich/famous (Duncan-Parker-Ginobili) wasn’t born in this country. San Antonio usually has eight or nine foreigners on its 15-man roster.

                12) Tommy John made his MLB debut in 1963; his last game was in 1989. He had elbow surgery and missed the ’75 season, that surgery is now known as “Tommy John surgery”. Here are John’s career stats, before and after the surgery:

                Before: 12 years: 124-106, one All-Star team.
                After: 14 years: 164-125, three All-Star teams.

Someone needs to get that surgeon into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

                11) Mariners blew a 6-3 lead in ninth inning Sunday; stuff like that is why some baseball bettors I talk to in Las Vegas prefer betting the first five innings option, as opposed to the whole game. Takes bullpens out of the equation; the fewer things in the equation, the better for the bettor.

                10) Bad day for NL East pitchers named Steve; Stephen Strasburg and Steven Matz both went on the DL Monday with sore arms.

                9) Chris Spielman does Lions’ preseason games on TV; it is impossible to listen to him and not learn good stuff about football. He is VERY SERIOUS about football– he is smart and good natured and should be higher in the TV analysts’ hierarchy.

                8) D-League will be up to 22 teams this season; only eight more to go until it becomes a full-fledged AAA league for the NBA.

                7) It is unfathomable to me that QBs get to the NFL (Jared Goff, for one) who have never taken a snap from center or ran a huddle in high school or college. College teams who do huddle should use that in their recruiting pitch to young QBs.

                6) Cincinnati Reds’ relievers have allowed a home run to the first batter they’ve faced 24 times this year, most since the ’07 Rays (25). Maybe if their ballpark wasn’t such a bandbox, they would have more successful pitchers. Same with Philly-Baltimore-Bronx-Houston.

                5) Adrian Gonzalez hit three homers against the Reds’ awful pitchers Monday; one of them was a glorified pop-up that landed in the first row in the leftfield bleachers.

People made fun of the generic “cookie-cutter” ballparks of the 70’s, but they didn’t yield cheap homers and help ruin pitching staffs, except for the hideous artificial turf they had.

                4) Monday was first day of school at University of New Mexico; too bad their computer system went down and the school bookstore couldn’t sell books, because the computers were down. Oy.

                3) One of Stephen Curry’s used mouthpieces went for $3,190 in one of those memorabilia auctions. Seriously….$3,190.

                2) Carl Erskine was at the Dodgers-Reds game Monday; he is 89 years old now, was 122-78 in 12 big league seasons for the Dodgers, mostly in Brooklyn. He started the Dodgers’ first game in LA in 1958 in the Coliseum (where USC/Rams play now). Mr Erskine seems sharp as a tack; was good to hear from him yesterday.

1– Sports Illustrated must be having money problems; they let veteran football writer Don Banks go, after 16 years with the magazine. Banks is an excellent writer; how he gets let go is baffling. Someone will be very smart and hire Banks to write for them.

                          • LEADING OFF: Dodgers-Giants starts in L.A, A's issue fines
                            August 23, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SETTLING THE WEST, PART 1 OF 3

The Dodgers attempt to defend their one-game lead in the NL West when they open a pivotal three-game series in L.A. against second-place San Francisco. Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (12-7, 2.25) pitches Game 1 against Kenta Maeda (12-7, 3.29). This is the first of three remaining series between the teams.

                            A'S ALTERCATION

The A's are trying to move on after fining Billy Butler and Danny Valencia on Monday after they fought in the clubhouse last week. Valencia hit Butler in the temple and Butler is on the seven-day concussions list following the exchange. Oakland general manager David Forst said ''both players have been disciplined and fined and we're moving past it.''

                            ANOTHER INJURED MET

The Mets are down another starting pitcher after placing left-hander Steven Matz on the disabled list with shoulder tightness. The Mets said the rookie underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed no structural damage to his shoulder. He joins Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler among New York's heralded young pitchers on the DL.

                            MINOR MOVEMENTS

The minors are getting a shakeup, with two teams from the Class A California League being contracted and while the Carolina League expands by two squads for the 2017 season. Bakersfield and High Desert will cease operations after the season, while Kinston, North Carolina, and another undetermined location will get Carolina League franchises. The Rangers have been affiliated with High Desert with two years and will shift their Class A operation to Kinston.

                            HEALTHY SALAZAR

Indians righty Danny Salazar (11-4) faces Oakland in his second start since coming off the disabled list. Carlos Carrasco and Andrew Miller combined to four-hit the A's in a 1-0 Indians' win Monday. Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea (4-8) leads all AL rookies with 92 strikeouts.

                            TAIJUAN COMES BACK

Taijuan Walker returns to Seattle's rotation following a stint in the minors. Walker last started for the Mariners Aug. 6 when he allowed six runs in four innings in an 8-6 win over the Angels. CC Sabathia pitches for the Yankees.

                            • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                              August 23, 2016

                              Hottest team: Royals (8-0 past 8, 11-1 past 12)

The Royals have played their way right back into the thick of the Wild Card race in the American League with their eight-game winning streak, and extended hot streak. The Royals have also won four in a row on the road, and they're 6-0 in their past six games against a starting pitcher with a WHIP greater than 1.30, for which Marlins SP Andrew Cashner certainly qualifies. The Royals are also 5-0 in their past five against right-handed starting pitching while winning each of Yordano Ventura's past four outings. On the flip side, the Marlins are 4-10 in their past 14 vs. RHP, 1-5 in their past six at home against righties and 0-4 in their past four interleague home outings against right-handed starters.

Coldest team: Angels (3-14 past 17)

The Angels hit the road for Toronto to face the first-place Blue Jays. That's not good for a Halos team which has dropped 10 straight on the road, last winning July 26 away from home. The Angels turn to Tyler Skaggs to snap the road woes, but he hasn't been very effective. The Angels are 0-4 in his past four outings, and they're 6-23 in their past 29 road games against right-handed starters. Nothing lines up in the favor of the Angels, as the cold streak should continue north of the border. Toronto has won 17 of their past 24 at home, and they're 5-1 in their past six against American League West foes.

Hottest pitcher: Ivan Nova, Pirates (9-6, 4.83 ERA)

Nova's overall numbers certainly aren't impressive, but he is unbeaten in three outings since coming aboard with the Pirates in a trade from the New York Yankees. He is 4-0 with a 4.41 ERA in three August starts, allowing eight runs with no walks and 12 strikeouts over 16 1/3 innings as a member of the Bucs. The Pirates have been victorious in all three of his outings, too. The Astros have been red hot lately, so this will be a huge test. However, while Houston is 25-10 in their past 35 interleague games, they are just 4-9 in their past 13 against right-handed starting pitchers.

Coldest pitcher: Sean Manaea, Athletics (4-8, 4.73 ERA)

The rookie for the Athletics has won just one of his past nine starts, although he has chopped more than a run from his overall ERA since July 5. Still, he is facing a red-hot Indians team which is 7-1 in their past eight road outings against a team with a losing record and 13-3 in their past 16 against American League West foes. The Tribe has built their first-place standing in the American League Central Division on the backs of the dregs of the league, winning 28 of their past 37 against teams with an overall losing record, including a 1-0 pitcher's duel win in Monday's series opener. The A's have lost four straight against the Indians.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (7-0 past six, 13-3 past 16)

Another day, another under for the A's, who continue to struggle scoring runs. They dropped the series opener against Carlos Carrasco and the Indians by a 1-0 count. Carrasco had been struggling allowing the long ball, but that wasn't a problem over eight scoreless innings with four hits and no walks allowed Monday while punching out nine A's. The Oakland lineup consists of a majority of players who came up from Triple-A Nashville. During their 1-8 run the Athletics are averaging just 3.1 runs per game, and if you take out a nine-run outburst in a win Aug. 19, they are averaging 2.4 runs in the eight losses.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (6-0 past six, 10-1 past 11 and 5-0 past five road games)

The offense has been flowing for the Braves lately, and their pitching staff continues to get punched around. That makes for plenty of 'over' results. In their past six games the Atlanta pitching staff is allowing 8.5 runs per game, taking care of the over on their own in four of the six outings. The over is also 20-6 in Arizona's past 26 games at home, 36-14-1 in their past 51 overall and 9-1-1 in Archie Bradley's past 11 home starts. All signs point to another high-scoring game just like Monday's wild series opener which saw Arizona eek out a 9-8 walk-off winner.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Giants

The Dodgers head home to Chavez Ravine looking to turn aside the rival Giants. Hopefully for L.A. they didn't leave all of their offense in Cincinnati, as they thrashed the Reds 19-8 while smashing seven home runs. Runs should be significantly harder to come by with Madison Bumgarner on the bump for San Francisco. The Giants are 5-12 over their past 17 road games, and 2-6 in their past eight outings. They just haven't been very Giant-like lately, including just 2-5 over their past seven outings by Madison Bumgarner. The Dodgers have won 29 of their past 41 at home, and they're 5-2 in Kenta Maeda's past seven starts against a team with a winning overall record. The Giants have lost six of their past seven in L.A., and they're 0-4 in MadBum's past four outings against the Dodgers.

Betcha didn’t know: CC Sabathia has had a ton of success against the Mariners over his career, and the Bronx Bombers generally fare very well when Carsten Charles is on the bump. The Yankees are a perfect 5-0 in Sabathia's past five starts at Safeco Field, and they're 11-2 in his past 13 starts overall against the M's. The Yankees have won eight of their past nine in Seattle, and the Yankees have won nine of their past 13 against the Mariners. New York has won 14 of their past 19 against American League West foes. The Mariners are 3-7 in Taijuan Walker's past 10 outings, including 2-5 in his past seven against teams with an overall winning mark.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-225) at Padres

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+115) vs. Astros

Biggest line move: Braves (+150 to +125) at Diamondbacks
