          • Saturday’s six-pack

            — Fort Wayne Tin Caps of the Midwest League averaged 6,084 fans per game this summer; minor league baseball is a good investment.

            — Guy found Washington Redskins’ defensive playbooks in a dumpster; apparently someone they cut tossed them on his way out of town.

            — Colorado Buffaloes put in a no-huddle offense which will be fun to track, seeing as Boulder is obviously in high altitude.

            — Tom Brady played a half, took 39 snaps in the Patriots’ last preseason game; his next game action is October 9 in Cleveland.

            — Albany 22, Buffalo 16– It is stupid to play I-AA teams; nothing to gain. Buffalo paid the Great Danes $275K to visit, then lost to them. Oy.

            — Baseball rosters expanding on September 1 mean more pitching changes late in game; the pace-of-game zealots won’t like that.

            Saturday’s List of 13: College football knowledge…….

            13) Of all the college football teams in the country, the teams with the most returning starts on the offensive line:

            140- Bowling Green
131- Western Kentucky, North Carolina, USC
            123- Eastern Michigan
            109- Arkansas State

            12) New Mexico, BYU have 16 senior starters, most in the country. Ohio State has only two senior starters, Texas 3.

            11) According to Phil Steele’s great magazine, the five toughest schedules in the country: USC-Ole Miss-Alabama-Cal-Auburn

            10) Army lost seven games by a TD or less last season; no one else lost more than five.

            9) TCU/Michigan State both won six games by a TD or less LY; Georgia, Florida and Northwestern all won five.

            8) Best turnover ratios LY: San Diego State +22, Houston +21, Navy +19. No one else had a turnover ratio better than +14.

            7) Worst turnover ratios LY: Hawai’i -23, Central Florida -20, Cincinnati -19.

            6) Last three years, Houston is +54 in turnovers; they covered seven of last eight as a road favorite, beat ACC teams in last two bowls.

            5) NC State was 0-6 vs bowl eligible teams LY, 7-0 vs everyone else. Wolfpack is 5-1 as road favorites under Doeren; they were 0-7 in the seven years prior to Doeren coming to Raleigh.

            4) Average total in Texas Tech’s last five bowl games: 72.6. Since 2007, Tech is 14-5-1 as a road favorite.

            3) Penn State is 7-17 vs spread in its last 24 Big 14 games; since 2013, they’re 0-5 as road favorites- under James Franklin, they’re 2-9 vs spread coming off a loss. Nittany Lions have 9 starters back on offense, but break in a new quarterback this year.

            2) Kentucky is 1-9-2 as a home underdog under Mike Stoops. Wildcats have their top 4 rushers back, their top 10 receivers, but the QB bolted for Boston College. Kentucky is 1-8 SU in last 9 games that were decided by less than 7 points.

1– Boise State scored 40 ppg in winning four of last five bowl games; three of those wins were against Pac-12 teams- they’re 9-3 vs spread coming off a loss. Since 2008, Broncos are 29-13 as road favorites.

CHICAGO (AP) Jon Lester pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and settled for his second complete game of the season, helping the sizzling Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Friday to move a season-high 40 games over .500.

Hunter Pence ended Lester's bid for a second no-hitter with a homer to left on a 1-2 cutter. Brandon Crawford followed with a double, and Lester (15-4) got Eduardo Nunez to line to third and worked around Trevor Brown's one-out double in the eighth.

Lester allowed three hits and walked two. The Cubs have won five straight to improve to 87-47.

David Ross and Dexter Fowler had RBI hits in the second off Albert Suarez (3-3).

Pence's second homer in two days ended a 12 2/3-innings hitless streak for the San Francisco. The Giants are a major league-worst 15-29 since the All-Star break.

Lester walked Buster Posey with two outs in the first inning and followed by setting down 18 straight by getting some help.

Third baseman Kris Bryant made a diving, backhand grab of Crawford's liner to lead off the fifth and Dexter Fowler made a sliding catch of Kelby Tomlinson's liner in center an inning later.

The 32-year-old Lester threw a no-hitter on May 19, 2008, for Boston against Kansas City. That came less than two years after he was diagnosed with cancer.

              ORIOLES 8, YANKEES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 41st homer to cap a six-run second inning, and Baltimore peppered New York with four long balls.

Pedro Alvarez and Chris Davis hit two-run homers in the second inning and Manny Machado added a two-run shot in the fourth. Baltimore leads the majors with 213 home runs, including 117 at home.

When Alvarez went deep, the Orioles became the 19th team in big league history to have six players hit at least 20 in the same season. Alvarez joins Trumbo, Machado (33), Davis (33), Adam Jones (24) and Jonathan Schoop (21).

Dylan Bundy (8-5) allowed two hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. Yankees rookie Chad Green (2-4) yielded four runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings before leaving with right elbow pain.

              RANGERS 10, ASTROS 8

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor homered for the third straight game in a seven-run fourth inning, Carlos Gomez had two hits in his first game against his former team and Texas held off Houston.

Odor's team-leading 28th home run was one of three in the fourth inning against Doug Fister (12-10), who came out after Jonathan Lucroy followed Odor's shot to right with a line drive just over the 14-foot wall in left for a 9-2 lead. Alex Bregman had a solo homer and a two-run triple but popped out to end the eighth with two runners on after the Astros had pulled within two.

A.J. Griffin (7-3) was the winner, and Sam Dyson pitched a perfect ninth for his 31st save.

Carlos Beltran also homered in the fourth, his 26th overall and fourth since coming to the Rangers from the New York Yankees at the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

NEW YORK (AP) - Bryce Harper hit two doubles and became the latest player to steal a base against Noah Syndergaard, helping A.J. Cole post his first major league win as Washington beat New York.

Washington won its fourth in a row and increased its NL East bulge over the wild card-contending Mets to 10 1/2 games.

Like a lot of teams, the Nationals came out running on Syndergaard (12-8), swiping four bases in the early innings. Tall and slow to the plate, he's had 45 runners steal with him on the mound - the most against any pitcher since Hideo Nomo in 2001, ESPN Stats & Info said.

Trea Turner led off the game with a single, stole two bases and scored on Harper's sacrifice fly. Harper doubled with one out in the fourth, stole third with two outs and came home on a single by Wilson Ramos. Harper's double set up Anthony Rendon's two-run single in the ninth.

Cole (1-1) gave up one run and three hits in six innings.

Asdrubal Cabrera homered for the sixth time in eight games, sending a drive over the right-center wall in the Mets' fourth.

Cleveland scored three times in the first and once in the second off Andrew Cashner (4-11). Abraham Almonte's two-run double pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth.

Morrison put the Rays up 4-2 in sixth on his 12th homer off Marcus Stroman (9-6).

Blaine Boyer (2-3) pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up the win. Tyler Thornburg worked the ninth for his seventh save. Scooter Gennett drove in Milwaukee's only run with an RBI-double in the sixth off Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon (3-4).

                • LEADING OFF: Arrieta vs Bumgarner; Kershaw makes rehab start
                  September 2, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                  PAIR OF ACES

A pitching showdown at Wrigley Field as Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta (16-5, 2.84 ERA), the NL leader in wins, faces Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner (13-8, 2.49). A tight game may not bode well for the Giants, who are 4-12 in one-run decisions since the All-Star break.

                  ON THE MEND

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to throw three innings or about 50 pitches during a rehab outing for Class A Rancho Cucamonga, with left-hander Brett Anderson to follow. Anderson is on the disabled list with a finger blister. Kershaw has been sidelined since late June with a herniated disk in his back.

                  CENTRAL LOCATION

In a pivotal AL Central series between surging playoff contenders, Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers visit Kansas City. Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer (10-5, 2.69 ERA) starts on six days' rest against Yordano Ventura (9-9, 4.33) and the World Series champion Royals.

                  ROAD SHOW

Leading the big leagues in wins, Boston right-hander Rick Porcello (18-3, 3.26 ERA) tries to move within one of No. 20 when the Red Sox visit last-place Oakland. Porcello recently became the first Boston pitcher in 70 years to start a season 13-0 at Fenway Park, but this time he'll take his act on the road.

                  FIRST-PLACE SCHEDULE

Rookie right-hander Joe Musgrove starts for wild card-hopeful Houston in the middle game of three at AL West-leading Texas. Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel was bumped out of the series for extra rest. The left-hander is set to start Tuesday in Cleveland as the Astros open September with 13 consecutive games against current division leaders (Texas in two series, Cleveland, Chicago Cubs).

                  FEELING GREEN

The Yankees hope for good news on rookie right-hander Chad Green, who left Friday night's start in Baltimore with right elbow pain. He was scheduled to be examined by a doctor Saturday, the team said.
