NEW YORK (AP) Yoenis Cespedes homered with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the New York Mets a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

Jose Reyes dashed home to score the tying run in the eighth on a dangerous collision at the plate. Two innings later, Cespedes, who sat out Sunday's loss to Philadelphia after his nagging right quadriceps flared up, launched a no-doubt drive to left-center on a 1-1 pitch from Nick Wittgren (4-3).

The Mets pulled even with Miami for second place in the NL East. With its seventh victory in nine games, New York remained 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the league's second wild card.

Rookie left-hander Josh Smoker (1-0) struck out two in a perfect inning for his first major league win.

          CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Stephen Piscotty scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning after Carlos Martinez struck out a career-high 13, leading the St. Louis past Milwaukee.

With two on and nobody out in the ninth, Yadier Molina dropped down a bunt. Reliever Tyler Thornburg (5-5) threw to third base for a force out, but Jonathan Villar's throw to first was wild, allowing Piscotty to score.

After Martinez held Milwaukee to one run over six innings, the Brewers scored four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. St. Louis tied it in the eighth on a two-run homer by Randal Grichuk off Corey Knebel.

Seung Hwan Oh pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. Miguel Socolovich (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win.

Jedd Gyorko and Kolten Wong each hit solo home runs for the Cardinals.

          INDIANS 1, TWINS 0, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis' 10th-inning single scored Chris Gimenez as Cleveland handed Minnesota its 11th straight loss.

Kipnis lined a 1-0 pitch from Brandon Kintzler (0-1) with one out to left-center to finally break up the scoreless game.

Abraham Almonte pushed a bunt past Kintzler and beat the throw to first to start the inning. Gimenez fouled off two bunt attempts before poking a single through the right side with Almonte moving to second.

Third baseman Miguel Sano fielded Rajai Davis' slow roller. Third base umpire Ron Kupla ruled Sano tagged Almonte and the call was upheld after a Cleveland challenge.

Kipnis then hit the second pitch from Kinztler for the game-winner.

Zach McAllister (3-2) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th, retiring Max Kepler on a fly ball to end the inning.

          TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 3

DETROIT (AP) - Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Detroit.

Justin Upton also went deep for the Tigers, who pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American League's second wild card.

Detroit trailed 3-2 after a solo homer in the seventh by Chicago's Tyler Saladino, but Saltalamacchia's towering drive to right-center off Nate Jones (5-3) put the Tigers ahead.

Justin Wilson (4-4) got the win in relief, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his 37th save in 40 chances.

Saladino drove in all three Chicago runs. James Shields allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

          RED SOX 9, RAYS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello became the majors' first 18-game winner and the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a season 13-0 in Fenway Park, going seven solid innings in Boston's victory over Tampa Bay.

Mookie Betts hit his 30th homer, a solo shot, and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who hold the AL's first wild-card spot but had lost four of five. Brock Holt had three hits and drove in two runs, Travis Shaw had three hits and Chris Young added a tiebreaking two-run double for Boston.

Porcello (18-3) allowed three runs and six hits, striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Matt Andriese (6-6) took the loss, giving up a season-high seven runs in four-plus innings. The Rays, buried in last in the AL East, have lost three of four.

          NATIONALS 4, PHILLIES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tanner Roark threw seven impressive innings, Jayson Werth hit a solo homer and Washington beat Philadelphia.

Roark (14-7) allowed four singles and struck out five. Marc Rzepczynski tossed a perfect eighth and Mark Melancon finished off the four-hitter.

Phillies rookie Jake Thompson (1-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. It was the longest and best of his five career starts.

Werth lined a solo shot to left in the first against his former team.

Bryce Harper raced home from first on Anthony Rendon's single to left-center to make it 2-0 in the first. Clint Robinson and Trea Turner had RBI singles off Frank Herrmann in the ninth.

          CUBS 8, PIRATES 7, 13 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Miguel Montero hit a game-ending RBI single in the 13th inning, and Chicago rallied for a wild win over Pittsburgh.

Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo set the stage for Montero's clutch swing with consecutive RBI singles against Jeff Locke (9-8), plating the tying run. After Ben Zobrist was walked intentionally, Montero lined a clean single into left field.

Rob Zastryzny (1-0) got his first major league win despite allowing Josh Harrison's sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning. Jorge Soler and Willson Contreras homered for the Cubs, and Javier Baez collected four hits.

Pittsburgh had won eight straight road games. It fell 1 1/2 games back of St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

          BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Josh Donaldson hit his fourth homer in two days and Jose Bautista also went deep in support of Marco Estrada, leading Toronto past Baltimore.

The Blue Jays lead the third-place Orioles by four games in the AL East. Baltimore has lost four out of five and is clinging to the second wild card.

Donaldson hit a solo homer in the fourth to tie it 1-1. The AL MVP had three homers in a 9-6 win over Minnesota on Sunday.

Estrada (8-6) allowed one run and four hits with four strikeouts over seven-plus innings. The Blue Jays have won three of his four starts against the Orioles this year.

J.J. Hardy provided Baltimore's only run with his eighth homer in the third.

Baltimore left-hander Wade Miley (8-11) allowed three runs and five hits while tying a season high with nine strikeouts over seven innings.

          ROYALS 8, YANKEES 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Dillon Gee kept the Royals' momentum going with six sharp innings, Alcides Escobar hit a three-run homer and Kansas City beat the New York Yankees.

Gee (6-7) allowed only four hits and a run in the latest impressive start by the Royals' staff, helping the reigning World Series champions win for the 18th time in 22 games.

Lorenzo Cain, Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon drove in runs off Michael Pineda (6-11) during a five-hit salvo in the first inning. Pineda then retired 15 straight before getting into a two-on, no-outs jam in the seventh that led to Escobar's homer off reliever Blake Parker.

Starlin Castro drove in two runs for the Yankees, the second in a four-run eighth inning that forced Kansas City manager Ned Yost to summon fill-in closer Kelvin Herrera.

          RANGERS 6, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings and Carlos Beltran homered among three hits, helping Texas beat Seattle.

The American League-leading Rangers won the first of six straight games at home against the two teams chasing them in the AL West and dropped the Mariners into third place, a game behind Houston and 9 1/2 back of Texas.

Darvish (5-3) easily outpitched fellow Japanese right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma for his third straight win, leaving to a standing ovation with a 6-1 lead in the seventh after throwing 110 pitches, the most since his return from Tommy John surgery.

Sam Dyson struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 30th save, giving Texas 13 strikeouts.

Iwakuma (14-10) lost his third straight start while matching his shortest outing of the season at three innings.

          ASTROS 6, ATHLETICS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve homered, Joe Musgrove and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as Houston beat Oakland.

Musgrove (2-2) struck out seven, walked three and allowed three hits over 5 1/3 innings, and then Luke Gregerson, Pat Neshek and Brad Peacock closed things out. Musgrove had allowed 13 runs over his last two starts.

Houston closed within two games of the second AL wild card with the win and Baltimore's loss.

A's starter Sean Manaea (5-9) left after 3 1/3 innings with a right rhomboid strain.

Altuve hit his second homer in two games to lead off the sixth and extend Houston's lead to 3-0.

Alex Bregman hit a two-run single and Carlos Correa had an RBI single as part of a three-run seventh.

          ROCKIES 8, DODGERS 1

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray pitched six scoreless innings, Nick Hundley hit a two-run homer and the Colorado beat NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Gray (9-6) surrendered four hits and struck out eight in a crisp performance for his first win since Aug. 2. He was helped out by centerfielder Charlie Blackmon, who made a sliding catch in the fifth to thwart a big inning.

DJ LeMahieu had a two-run double in a five-run seventh that turned a pitching duel into a rout.

Kenta Maeda (13-8) was electric once again at Coors Field - except for a hanging slider to Hundley in the fourth. The right-hander with the quirky delivery allowed four hits over five innings. Maeda has a 2.12 ERA in three starts at the hitter friendly park.

          ANGELS 9, REDS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each hit one of the Angels' five home runs in a win over Cincinnati.

Trout went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, joining Alex Rodriguez as one of two players to score 100 runs five times before his age-25 season.

Pujols hit his 586th homer, tying Frank Robinson for ninth on the career list.

Kole Calhoun was a triple short of the cycle, and C.J. Cron homered among his three hits for the Angels.

Matt Shoemaker (9-13) allowed two runs and seven hits over seven innings. After giving up a two-run homer to Joey Votto in the first, Shoemaker settled in to win his third straight decision.

Dan Straily (10-7) allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.

          • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

In my opinion, the six best backup QBs in the NFL:

            — Nick Foles, KC– threw 27 TDs with 2 INT in 2013.

            — Matt Cassel, Tenn– Has started 79 NFL games (35-44)

            — Matt Moore, Mia– Still think he is better than Tannehill.

            — Derek Anderson, Car– 2-0 as a starter since 2010.

            — Josh McCown, Clev– 13 years, 7 teams. 2-17 last two years.

            — Brian Hoyer, Chi– 12-10 for Browns/Texans last two years.

Due to forecasts of severe weather, the Redskins-Bucs preseason game scheduled for Thursday night has been moved up to Wednesday.

            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but………

            13) I’m a big advocate of veteran quarterbacks calling their own plays; NFL coaches tend to be too conservative, protecting their jobs. When a QB calls plays, he is going to be more aggressive, and I like that.

Not many coaches like Bruce Arians, Sean Payton or Mike Martz who call plays like they bet the over.

            12) I’m pretty sure on most NFL teams, QB/OC both prepare a list of their favorite plays, and the play-caller chooses plays both like for a given situation. Why can’t the QB have those plays on his wristband and do the same thing?

Last week on Hard Knocks, Rams’ OC Rob Boras was heard talking to Jared Goff after a series; the last play they had run was #5 on Boras’ list, #1 on Goff’s list. Teams have all week to develop a consensus on which plays they think will work.

            11) The coach has the radio into the QB’s helmet, so if he wants one play to be chosen, he can still call it in, but if I have a solid veteran QB, I’d let him pick the plays our team runs. Think the players would have more confidence in the play calling if that happened.

            10) A reader from Texas e-mailed me Monday to praise the Star, the Cowboys’ practice facility in Frisco, TX which is doubling as a 12,000-seat high school football stadium. Eight schools are using the domed facility as their home field. Tremendous idea.

            9) Our reader also told us about the basketball coaching situation at Findlay Prep in Las Vegas; apparently the new coach at Findlay came to Vegas from Frisco, where he was a middle school football coach (they have 16 middle schools in Frisco). 16 middle schools in one town- wow.

The coach has two sons who are outstanding basketball players; he was named an assistant coach at Findlay, but when the old coach left for a college assistant’s job (Southern Utah), the assistant became the head coach, which may be why Gary Trent Jr jumped ship and is going to a school in California for his senior year.

            8) Rumors have the older son preferring the Texas Longhorns as his college destination; would Shaka Smart bring the kid’s father along as an assistant coach?

            7) Cal-San Diego has an outstanding D-II basketball program, but if they get an invite from the Big West, the Tritons will be going D-I. Not to be confused with San Diego State or U of San Diego, UCSD doesn’t have football, so basketball could put the school more on the national map.

            6) Former NFL QB Byron Leftwich is now a coaching intern with the Arizona Cardinals. Surprisingly few former players become NFL coaches; maybe the big money they make as players discourages them from working the long hours that coaches work.

            5) San Francisco Giants hit 4 home runs and 4 triples Sunday, first team to do that in one game since 1998.

            4) Florida State’s football team has a reality show on Showtime that starts September 6; curious to see if the first episode deals with their strength coach getting a DUI over the weekend. Not good.

            3) Tennessee-Virginia Tech are playing football this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, with 160,000 fans expected to attend. Should be quite a spectacle.

            2) Started going thru college basketball stuff last week, as preparation for this winter has begun; surprised to see that the Michigan Wolverines have not won the Big 14 conference tournament since 1998. Long time.

1– Kudos to former baseball commissioner Bud Selig for the whole Wild Card thing; the Wild Card makes September relevant in baseball. Going to be an exciting month, with lot of teams jockeying to make the playoffs.

                      • LEADING OFF: Kershaw vs Tebow? Watch for the slider
                        August 30, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                        HAPP ON TAP

J.A. Happ (17-4, 3.19) tries for his 18th win as the Blue Jays and Orioles continue a pivotal series in Baltimore. Happ ended an 11-decision winning streak last time out in a 6-3 loss to the Angels - it was the first time Toronto had lost with Happ pitching since June 6. Ubaldo Jimenez (5-11, 6.62) makes his second start since returning to Baltimore's rotation. He pitched six innings of one-run ball last time out.

                        FOLLOW UP

Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer (14-7, 2.92) pitches against Philadelphia after tossing a gem in his last start. Scherzer pitched eight innings of two-hit ball in a 4-0 win over Baltimore, striking out 10 and throwing just 95 pitches. Jerad Eickhoff (9-12, 3.87) has won three straight decisions for the Phillies.

                        BACK-TO-BACK AGAIN

Texas left-hander Cole Hamels takes the middle game of a series against Seattle with the Mariners trying to get closer to the AL West-leading Rangers. It will be the ninth straight time Hamels follows Yu Darvish in the rotation since the Japanese right-hander returned from right shoulder discomfort in the second game after the All-Star break. The Rangers were 10-6 in those starts with four straight wins going into Darvish's outing Monday night.

                        BACK-TO-BACK AGAIN

Texas left-hander Cole Hamels takes the middle game of a series against Seattle with the Mariners trying to get closer to the AL West-leading Rangers. If Hamels starts, it will be the ninth straight time he has followed Yu Darvish in the rotation since the Japanese right-hander returned from right shoulder discomfort in the second game after the All-Star break. The Rangers were 10-6 in those starts with four straight wins going into Darvish's outing Monday night.

                        TANAKA ON A ROLL

Yankees righty Masahiro Tanaka (11-4, 3.11) has thrown 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings and looks for more against the Royals. Tanaka has 34 strikeouts and just one walk over 34 innings in August, going 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA.

                        ACES OUT WEST

Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (14-4, 2.86) and Diamondbacks righty Zack Greinke (11-4, 4.29) face off in a battle of NL West aces. Cueto has just one win since the All-Star break, though he also has a 2.29 ERA over his past three starts. After seeming to turn things around with a solid June, Greinke has struggled in August, going 1-1 with a 7.84 ERA in four starts.

                        KERSHAW VS TEBOW?

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will face hitters in a simulated game in Los Angeles, and it just happens to coincide with the baseball tryout Tim Tebow is holding in the same city. But no, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner won't be stepping into the batter's box to face Kershaw, who's working his way back from mild disk irritation. ''Great athlete. I don't know if he's ready for the Clayton Kershaw slider, though,'' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts joked.

Hottest team: Mets (7-3 last 10)

New York has crept back into the NL Wild Card race since a shocking home sweep at the hands of Arizona three weeks ago. The Mets have won seven of their last nine games, including a walk-off home run by Yoenis Cespedes in Monday’s 2-1 victory over the Marlins. New York sits 2 ½ games behind St. Louis for the second Wild Card spot as the Mets have pulled even with the Marlins, who have dropped three in a row. Seth Lugo takes the mound for New York tonight against Miami, as the right-hander beat the Cardinals as a +150 underdog in his last start, tossing five scoreless innings in a 10-6 win.

Coldest team: Twins (0-11 last 11)

Minnesota has languished in last place of the AL Central all season, but the Twins have hit a new low with its current 11-game losing streak. The only excuse Minnesota can use is the four teams it has played in this stretch, falling to Kansas City, Detroit, Toronto, and Cleveland, all clubs in the playoff race. The Twins fell in extra innings to the Indians in a 1-0 setback last night, allowing one run for the second time this month.

Minnesota has dropped eight consecutive road games, but lost for only the second time in the last seven visits to Cleveland. The Twins turn to Andrew Albers to end their skid tonight as the southpaw put together a 10-6 record at Triple-A Rochester.

Hottest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (11-4, 3.11 ERA)

After giving up seven runs to the Mets in a 7-1 loss in early August, Tanaka has dominated since by winning four straight starts. The Yankees’ right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his last two outings, beating the Angels and Mariners on the road, while striking out 14 and walking only one batter. Tanaka gave up seven runs (six earned) in seven innings the last time he faced the Royals on May 10, but the Yankees came away with a 10-7 victory.

Coldest pitcher: Julio Teheran, Braves (3-9, 3.15 ERA)

Atlanta returns home from a 3-4 West Coast swing to host San Diego tonight. Teheran is winless in his last two starts since coming off the disabled list, including allowing six earned runs and 11 hits in six innings of a 10-9 defeat at Arizona. The right-hander hasn’t had much luck at Turner Field at this season, as the Braves own a dreadful 1-12 record in his 13 home starts. The Braves are 1-6 in his seven starts as a home favorite, but Teheran beat the Padres as a road underdog in June by tossing eight innings in a 4-2 triumph.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (4-0 last four)

Detroit’s offense exploded in a three-game road sweep of Minnesota last week, scoring 25 runs. However, the Tigers have put up just 10 runs in the first four contests on their current homestand, while needing a rally in Monday’s 4-3 victory over the White Sox. In 11 of the past 12 games at Comerica Park, the Tigers have scored four runs or less, resulting in a 4-8 record. Daniel Norris heads to the mound for Detroit tonight, as the southpaw has given up three earned runs or less in four straight outings, while registering a pair of UNDERS at home in this span.

                          Biggest OVER run:
Rays (7-0 last seven on road)

Tampa Bay has lost four consecutive visits to Fenway Park following Monday’s 9-4 defeat to Boston. The Rays have cashed the OVER in seven straight games away from Tropicana Field, as Tampa Bay has scored at least four runs in five straight road contests. Tampa Bay’s Jake Odorizzi faces off against Boston’s Drew Pomeranz on the hill tonight, as the Rays edged the Red Sox, 2-1 last Thursday when these same two pitchers took the mound. In four of Odorizzi’s last five starts, the Rays have sailed OVER the total.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Rangers

Seattle has gone backwards of late, dropping six of its past seven games to fall three games behind the second Wild Card spot in the American League. The latest setback came in Monday’s 6-3 defeat at Texas, the sixth road loss in the eight tries for the Mariners. The Rangers own a healthy 8 ½ game advantage over the Astros in the AL West, while owning a 4-1 mark on their current homestand.

Cole Hamels continues to put up Cy Young numbers for Texas, improving to 14-4 after tossing eight scoreless innings in a 9-0 blowout of Cleveland in his last appearance. Hamels owns a 2-0 record against Seattle, allowing three earned runs in 14 innings of work. James Paxton counters for Seattle, as the Mariners have dropped seven of his past 10 starts since June. The M’s are 2-5 in Paxton’s seven road outings this season, while getting squeezed in a 2-1 home loss to the Rangers in June in spite of 6.1 scoreless innings.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
Since last season, the Angels are 2-5 in Jered Weaver’s last seven interleague starts. Two of Weaver’s worst outings this season came against National League foes, giving up seven earned runs at Milwaukee and allowing eight earned runs against St. Louis. Weaver beat the Reds the last time he faced them in the opening series of 2013 in Cincinnati, as he takes on a Reds’ squad that has lost six of eight road interleague games this season, including Monday’s 9-2 defeat.

                          Biggest public favorite:
                          Indians (-230) vs. Twins

                          Biggest public underdog:
                          Reds (+125) at Angels

                          Biggest line move:
Rockies (+135 to +117) vs. Dodge
