      • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Big Totals in the Big Apple?

A series between the new-look Yankees and the mashing Orioles has the feel of an Over series this weekend in the Bronx.

It is the final weekend of August and that means playoff races are heating up in the MLB. We break down all the best betting notes and information to help you handicap this weekend's series, including some big totals on the board when the Orioles visit the Yankees.

Big Totals in the Big Apple?

The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles could be strong Over plays this weekend as the American League East rivals do battle in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees were 5-1 O/U in their most recent six-game homestand before heading to the West Coast and playing to the Under in five of six games against the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners. Of note, the Yanks and O's have faced each other 10 times this season, playing to the Over just twice.

        Something’s Gotta Give

Speaking of totals, the top Over team in baseball takes on the league’s strongest Under play as the Minnesota Twins visit Rogers Centre for a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Twins have amassed the league’s best Over rate based mostly on a combination of terrible pitching and a better-than-advertised offense. It has been the exact opposite for the Blue Jays, whose pitching has been sensational while the offense has been less explosive than it was in 2015.

        Interleague Misery

The Oakland Athletics would probably rather just stick to facing American League opponents - but they won’t get that opportunity this weekend as they head to Busch Stadium for a weekend set with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Athletics are tied with three National League teams for the worst interleague record in baseball at 5-12, and have lost their last seven games against NL foes. They’re also 6-10-1 O/U over that stretch. The Cardinals are a dismal 7-10 against the AL.

        Injury Notes

        * The Toronto Blue Jays are welcoming back slugger Jose Bautista, who has been out since Aug. 10 with a knee injury. The Blue Jays haven’t missed Bautista all that much this season; they’re 27-18 for +350 units in his absence, going 19-24-2 O/U over that stretch.

        * The Boston Red Sox are down another outfielder, placing rookie Andrew Benintendi on the 15-day DL with a sprained left knee. His loss could be a significant one for the Red Sox, who have gone 12-9 SU and 10-11 O/U in the 21 games in which Benintendi has appeared.

        Batting Notes

        * The Cincinnati Reds should be very careful pitching to Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt this weekend. The Diamondbacks first baseman is 8-for-11 with two homers and four RBIs lifetime against Reds weekend starters Brandon Finnegan, Anthony DeSclafani and Homer Bailey.

        * Who says baseball is a young man’s game? Entering Thursday, the top three RBI leaders in the American League are all 33 or older: Toronto’s Edwin Encarnacion (33, 101 RBIs); Boston’s David Ortiz (40, 100 RBIs) and Los Angeles’ Albert Pujols (36, 99 RBIs).

        Pitching Notes

        * Make the Under a serious consideration Friday when Kansas City Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy faces Steven Wright and the host Boston Red Sox. Kennedy is a sensational 7-15 O/U for the season, and has pitched to the Under in 10 of his last 12 starts overall.

        * Has Ivan Nova found a new lease on major-league life? The New York Yankees castoff looks rejuvenated in Pittsburgh, with the Pirates having won all four of his starts so far. Nova has allowed just nine runs in those four starts; he toes the rubber Sunday against host Milwaukee.

        Totals Trend

The Royals’ hum-drum offense and sensational bullpen have combined for an incredible run of Unders. Kansas City is 5-17-2 O/U since July 30, with no consecutive Overs in that span.

        Ump Stat of the Day

The Indians aren't happy to see Lance Barrett behind home plate for tonight's game against the Rangers. Cleveland is 0-7 in the last seven games where Barrett has been calling balls and strikes. The Indians send Corey Kluber to the hill and are -135 favorites, while the Rangers will counter with Martin Perez and are on the board at +125.

        Friday's Weather Report

        * In Arlington, there is a 50 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms for tonight's game between the Rangers and Indians. The total for the game is currently 9.0.

        * At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, there is a 32 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms for today's game between the Cardinals and the Athletics. The total for the game is currently at 8.5.

              August 27, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Wilmer Flores launched a grand slam, Asdrubal Cabrera homered from both sides of the plate and even Bartolo Colon had two helpful hits while pitching the New York Mets to a 9-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Jose Reyes and Cabrera opened the Mets' half of the first inning with consecutive home runs, only the second time the franchise has accomplished the feat. Trying to make a significant move in the crowded NL wild-card race, New York (65-63) opened a 10-game homestand by winning for the fifth time in its past six.

The 43-year-old Colon (12-7) carried a two-hitter into the eighth inning. He also lashed two sharp hits that delighted the crowd, a leadoff double in the fifth and a line-drive single in the sixth.

The pudgy pitcher scored both times, first ahead of Flores' third career slam and then in front of Cabrera's second homer of the night. The switch-hitting shortstop became the first Mets player to go deep from both sides in one game since Carlos Beltran at Colorado on May 12, 2011.

Phillies left-hander Adam Morgan (1-8) took the loss.

              INDIANS 12, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Corey Kluber pitched six strong innings for a career-best sixth straight victory and Abraham Almonte hit two run-scoring doubles, helping Cleveland rout Texas in a matchup of division leaders.

The Indians (73-54) snapped a three-game losing streak, which had tied a season high, and pulled within a game of the Rangers (75-54) for the best record in the American League a night after losing 9-0 to Texas ace Cole Hamels.

Adrian Beltre hit a solo homer in the sixth for the AL West-leading Rangers, but Kluber (14-8) struck out the other three hitters in the right-hander's final inning to finish with seven strikeouts. The 2014 AL Cy Young winner has a 1.75 ERA over the nine starts covering the winning streak.

Martin Perez (8-10) was the loser.

              TIGERS 4, ANGELS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched into the eighth inning and Justin Upton homered for the fourth time in five games to lead Detroit past Los Angeles.

The Tigers have won five straight to move back into contention in the AL Central and wild-card races.

Upton was hitting .226 when Tigers manager Brad Ausmus held him out of the starting lineup for three days last week. Since returning Saturday, he's batting .417 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBIs.

Verlander (14-7) allowed two runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out eight in his ninth straight quality start. Francisco Rodriguez got the last four outs for his 36th save.

Ricky Nolasco (4-12) was the loser.

              MARINERS 3, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale struck out 14 but got outpitched by Felix Hernandez and the Seattle bullpen, and the Mariners beat Chicago to end a three-game skid.

Hernandez (9-4) improved to 5-0 in eight starts since returning from the disabled list, throwing 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Sale (15-7) gave up five hits and walked none in his fifth complete game of the season. He retired the final 16 batters, striking out 10 of them.

Sale struck out six straight in the sixth and seventh innings, one shy of Joe Cowley's team record.

Franklin Gutierrez hit a solo home run and Adam Lind added an RBI double off Sale.

Todd Frazier's 32nd home run in the seventh was one of eight hits off Hernandez.

              NATIONALS 8, ROCKIES 5

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jayson Werth and Daniel Murphy hit solo homers and drove in two runs each, and Gio Gonzalez earned his 100th career victory in Washington's win over Colorado.

Gonzalez (9-9) threw six innings and allowed two runs and four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Nick Hundley hit a three-run homer for the Rockies.

While Gonzalez hit the century mark, Rockies rookie Jeff Hoffman (0-2), remains in search of his first major league win. Hoffman allowed a homer to the second batter he faced when Werth went deep for the second time in twos many days and the 18th time this season.

Murphy gave the Nationals a 4-2 lead in the fifth with his team-leading 25th homer. The solo blast gave the Nationals second baseman 500 career RBIs.

              ASTROS 5, RAYS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa and Evan Gattis hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning to lift Houston past Tampa Bay.

Mikie Mahtook's first homer this season, a towering shot with two outs in the ninth inning, had put the Rays on top before Houston's dramatic comeback.

Correa connected on the first pitch in the ninth inning from Alex Colome (1-4) on a home run to the seats in right field to tie it 4-4. Gattis then fought through eight pitches before sending the ninth to right field for his 21st homer that gave Houston the win.

Ken Giles (2-3) was the winner.

Jake Marisnick homered in the second for Houston.

              ROYALS 6, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon homered, and Ian Kennedy allowed one run through five innings and Kansas City beat Boston.

Kansas City has won 11 of its last 12 games and is 18-6 in August.

Kennedy (9-9) had a chance set a club record by allowing one or fewer runs in six straight outings of at least six innings. But he left with a runner on after 5 1/3 innings and wound up charged for two earned runs in the game. He finished with nine strikeouts.

Kelvin Herrera earned his 10th save.

Lorenzo Cain added a solo homer in the eighth inning.

Steven Wright (13-6) took the loss.

              CARDINALS 3, ATHLETICS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jedd Gyorko homered and Luke Weaver pitched six strong innings to earn his first major league win as St. Louis beat Oakland.

Gyorko's 423-foot shot in the first extended the Cardinals' home run streak to 15 games, the longest active streak in the majors, and made it 2-0 after just two batters.

Weaver (1-1) gave up one run and four hits in a career-high six innings in his home debut for the Cardinals. Five of his seven strikeouts were looking.

Yonder Alonso's solo homer in the second inning was the A's only run.

Seung Hwan Oh got the last three outs for his 13th save helping the Cardinals get their first interleague win at home in eight tries this season.

Ross Detwiler (1-3) took the loss.

              YANKEES 14, ORIOLES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Gary Sanchez homered for the eighth time in nine games and drove in four runs to help New York beat Baltimore.

Mark Teixeira and Chase Headley also went deep for the surging Yankees, who moved five games over .500 for the first time this season.

Sanchez, who had three hits, had a two-out single in the bottom of the first. Teixeira followed with a towering shot into the right-field bleachers off Yovani Gallardo to give New York a 2-1 lead.

The Yankees broke the game open against Gallardo (4-6) with a six-run second. The right-hander was charged with eight runs over 1 1/3 innings, the shortest start of his 10-year career.

Luis Cessa (4-0) gave up three runs and five hits over six innings in his second big-league start.

Manny Machado homered twice for the Orioles, giving him 31 for the season.

              BLUE JAYS 15, TWINS 8

TORONTO (AP) - Russell Martin and Justin Smoak each homered and drove in five runs and Toronto handed Minnesota its eighth straight loss.

Josh Donaldson and Darwin Barney also homered. Francisco Liriano had his first win with Toronto to help the Blue Jays take a one-game lead in the AL East.

Trevor Plouffe hit a solo homer for the last-place Twins.

Smoak connected off Pat Dean (1-4) in the second inning and Donaldson followed three batters later with his 30th. Barney homered off Andrew Albers to begin a four-run sixth for the Blue Jays. Martin capped the inning with a three-run double off Pat Light.

              PIRATES 5, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jordy Mercer's first career grand slam capped a five-run sixth inning that started with two errors by Milwaukee third baseman Jonathan Villar, and Pittsburgh held off the Brewers.

Villar bobbled a bouncer by Andrew McCutchen to open the sixth, then threw wildly to second after making a diving stab on Gregory Polanco's hard shot.

Starling Marte followed with an RBI double off starter Matt Garza (4-6) to break a scoreless tie. Three batters later, Mercer cleared the bases with his homer to left-center.

The Brewers rallied in the bottom of the sixth behind a three-run shot from rookie shortstop Orlando Arcia, his first in the big leagues.

Pittsburgh's problematic bullpen barely held on from there to back starter Ryan Vogelsong (3-3). Domingo Santana popped out to end the game with the potential tying run at second.

Tony Watson escaped the jam for his ninth save.

              GIANTS 7, BRAVES 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jeff Samardzija and two relievers combined on a seven-hitter for San Francisco.

Angel Pagan homered while Brandon Belt, Denard Span and Buster Posey added two hits apiece for the Giants. San Francisco scored six runs on two-out hits and benefited from three Atlanta errors.

Samardzija (11-9) had an uneven outing and had to pitch out of two early jams to win for only the fourth time since May 30. Samardzija allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out six. He also doubled and scored in the fourth.

Freddie Freeman had two hits for Atlanta.

San Francisco had four consecutive two-out hits off starter Joel De La Cruz (0-7) in the first inning following a throwing error by Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson.

              DIAMONDBACKS 4, REDS 3, 11 innings

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's Brandon Drury scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the 11th inning.

After the Diamondbacks gave up a 2-1 lead in the ninth and then rallied to tie it in the 10th, a wild pitch by Blake Wood ended the game.

Drury doubled with one out off Wood (5-3) and took third on a groundout. A walk brought up Jean Segura, and Wood's first pitch bounced in front of home plate and went all the way to the backstop.

Drury slid home head-first for Arizona's second extra-inning win in three nights.

Edwin Escobar (1-2) got the victory with a scoreless inning.

              CUBS 6, DODGERS 4, 10 innings

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kris Bryant hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 10th inning to go with an earlier solo shot to lift Chicago in the series opener between NL division leaders.

Bryant's 35th homer capped a comeback from an earlier two-run deficit and extended the Cubs' winning streak to four games.

Chicago improved to 19-4 in August while earning its major league-leading 82nd victory.

Travis Wood (4-0) got the victory with one inning of relief. Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the 10th to earn his 10th save.

Adam Liberatore (2-1) took the loss, allowing two runs and four hits in one inning.

                — 20 years ago, the QBs in Arena Bowl IX were Kurt Warner-Jay Gruden.

Saturday’s List of 13: Is it really the last weekend in August?

                13) Did something different Thursday; hopped on an Amtrak train and went down to New York City, visited my cousins on Long Island. Excellent day, lot of laughs– train travel is highly underrated. I recommend it. Down and back in 22 hours makes for a long day, but a fun one.

                12) Penn Station is an amazing place; the hub of train travel in NYC, so many people going in and out. People of all shapes, sizes, races, all trying to get somewhere in a hurry. The tremendous diversity we have as a nation should be our greatest strength. Too bad that’s not the way things are going these days.

                11) Giants’ lefty Matt Moore had Tommy John surgery in 2014; Thursday he threw 133 pitches in his one-hitter, the most any pitcher has thrown in a game this year. Curious to follow Moore the rest of the year and see if this game has any ill effects on him going forward.

                10) Dodgers-Phillies swapped veteran catchers Thursday; AJ Ellis goes to Philly, Carlos Ruiz to LA. Phillies give Ruiz, a member of their ’08 title team, a chance to finish his career with a contender. Odd move for the contending Dodgers; Ellis is beloved by teammates. It was reported than Clayton Kershaw was in tears after the trade.

Like we talked about earlier this week; there is a human element to sports. Team chemistry matters, but not everyone shares that view.

                9) Arkansas-Texas have a basketball game December 17 in Houston. Solid non-conference game for both teams, and for TV.

                8) UNLV’s football team gets $1.3M for its road game at Ohio State next year, $1.15M for its game at USC in 2018. Rebels don’t have a guarantee game this year- they visit UCLA, but the Bruins came to Las Vegas LY, so this is simply a return game.

                7) From 2011-14, Cleveland Browns had six first-round draft picks; of those six players, only CB Justin Gilbert is still with Cleveland.

                6) Best part of Hard Knocks this week was DE Eugene Sims catching footballs one-handed that were shot from a pitching machine. He didn’t miss any; they had the Rams’ tight ends coach on camera asking, “Could he play tight end?”

                5) Interesting move this week; Tom Coughlin is now on the NFL’s competition committee. Not sure many retired coaches get on that, but then again, are we sure Coughlin is retired?

                4) Dallas Cowboys have to sign another backup QB; no way can they depend on Tony Romo to last thru one game, much less 16. Rookie Dak Prescott has been terrific in preseason, but if Romo is a no-go, then Dallas still needs someone to back up Prescott.

                3) By the way, Dallas is 1-13 in the last 14 regular season games that Romo missed.

                2) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Reds’ OF Adam Duvall, when asked about the one baseball rule he would change, if he could:

“I don’t know. I mean, I enjoy watching National League games because of the pitchers having to hit. Maybe that would be it. It makes it so much more interesting, having to juggle the pieces rather than just being able to leave it alone. The double switch is very interesting because you have to know what you’re doing and it can change a ballgame. So, maybe get rid of the DH would be it.”

1– Science is amazing; people who are doctors/nurses do great things. A young person in Las Vegas named Addison was born last year with a hole in her heart; she got it fixed this week, which is excellent news. Young Addison has a great smile (and more hair on her head than me). Must be a tremendous feeling to be a doctor and to save people’s lives.

                  • LEADING OFF: Orioles check Jones, Mets see about Matz
                    August 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                    CHECK HIM

The Orioles will see how All-Star center fielder Adam Jones is feeling, a day after he left a game at Yankee Stadium because of a strained left hamstring. Jones had exited Thursday night in the ninth inning at Washington because of hamstring cramps. He is batting .275 with 24 home runs and 74 RBIs.

                    MOTOWN ON THE MOVE

The Tigers try for their sixth straight game when rookie Michael Fulmer (10-4, 2.58 ERA) takes on the Angels at Comerica Park. Detroit's surge into the AL wild-card race has been powered by Justin Upton, who has homered four times during this five-game winning streak.

                    ALMOST READY

Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu could return to the lineup after missing three straight games because of a wrist injury. He worked out before Friday night's game in Washington and manager Walt Weiss said he anticipated LeMahieu was ready to return. LeMahieu is second in the NL batting race at .344 - Daniel Murphy of the Nationals leads at .346.

                    OK TO GO?

The Mets might know more about lefty Steven Matz, who's been sidelined by tightness in his pitching shoulder. He was scheduled to toss on the side this weekend. Matz is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday, but it's not certain if he'll be able to start vs. Miami in a matchup of NL wild-card contenders.

                    WELCOME BACK

Catcher Dioner Navarro could rejoin the Blue Jays after they got him from the White Sox in a trade for minor league lefty Colton Turner. The switch-hitting Navarro spent two seasons with Toronto before signing with Chicago last December. He was hitting just .210 with six homers and 32 RBIs in 85 games. The Blue Jays are hosting Minnesota this weekend.
