                • LEADING OFF: Stanton back to hit, Strasburg returns
                  September 7, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                  STANTON RETURNS

The Marlins are getting a key reinforcement for their postseason push - sort of. Star slugger Giancarlo Stanton was activated Tuesday, just three weeks after his season was thought to be over because of a badly strained groin. The catch is that Stanton is only going to pinch hit. Of course, Miami won't complain about getting their big bat back for key situations.

                  STRASBURG'S STRUGGLES

Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 3.59) will return after missing a few weeks with a sore elbow and tries to slow his recent slide when Washington faces Atlanta. Strasburg allowed 19 runs over his final three starts before being shelved, including nine over 1 2/3 innings in a loss to Colorado last time out. The struggles likely took Strasburg out of the running for the NL Cy Young Award, though he and the Nationals still looked poised to win the NL East.

                  IMPRESSIVE HEAT

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (12-8, 2.56) faces Reds righty Anthony DeSclafani (8-2, 2.93) in a battle of pitchers with sub-three ERAs. Syndergaard leads all qualified major league starters in average fastball velocity at 98 mph - the next closest entering Tuesday was Kansas City's Yordano Ventura at 95.9.

                  VIRGIN VOYAGE

Jharel Cotton will become the third pitcher from the Virgin Islands to pitch in the majors when he debuts with Oakland against the Angels. The right-hander follows Al McBean and Elrod Hendricks as big leaguers from St. Thomas. Cotton was acquired from the Dodgers in a package for Rich Hill and Josh Reddick this season and had a 2.82 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Nashville after the trade.

                  BACK TO BROCK

Rookie Brock Stewart (0-2, 7.94) gets another start with the Dodgers, this time against Arizona. The right-hander rocketed from Class A to the majors this season and broke through with five dominant innings in his last start, a 1-0 win over the majors-leading Chicago Cubs. Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray (7-12, 4.46) shut out the Dodgers over seven innings when he last faced them on July 17.

WASHINGTON (AP) Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg felt a pinch in the back of his elbow and was forced to make an early exit in his first start since returning from the disabled list, and NL East-leading Washington went on to defeat Atlanta 5-4 in 11 innings Wednesday night.

The Nationals said Strasburg would get an MRI and didn't elaborate on the severity of his injury. Strasburg winced on the mound after throwing a pitch in the third inning, and manager Dusty Baker said Strasburg had felt a pinch.

Strasburg had been out since Aug. 17 because of soreness in his right elbow. He left after 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits.

With Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz attempting to bunt after Dansby Swanson's leadoff double, Strasburg's 0-2 pitch sailed high. Strasburg grimaced, walked around the mound and then threw another pitch, retiring Foltynewicz. Washington's trainer came out and Strasburg departed, covering his mouth with his glove as he reached the dugout.

Strasburg was replaced by Sean Burnett, who gave up an RBI double to Adonis Garcia.

Jayson Werth walked leading off the 11th and Daniel Murphy followed with a double off Jed Bradley (1-1). After Bryce Harper was intentionally walked to load the bases, Wilson Ramos singled off Brandon Cunniff to win it. Mat Latos (1-0), the 10th Nationals pitcher, got one out for the win.

                          DODGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasiel Puig homered and drove in another run, and Brock Stewart became the fourth consecutive rookie pitcher to win his start, helping the Dodgers beat Arizona to win their fifth straight and complete a three-game sweep.

The NL West leaders increased their lead to a season-high five games over San Francisco.

The Dodgers open a 10-game trip Friday in Miami, where ace Clayton Kershaw is set to start after missing the last two months because of a herniated disk.

Stewart (1-2) allowed one run and five hits in five innings.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 43rd save in 49 chances.

Carrasco (11-7) allowed Colby Rasmus' two-run homer in the fourth, one batter after the game was stopped briefly when one of the bugs appeared to get in his eye. The right-hander regrouped after the home run, allowing four runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Mike Napoli's two-run homer off Doug Fister (12-11) gave Cleveland a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer added a two-run double in the inning and the Indians extended their lead over Detroit to 5 1/2 games in the AL Central.

Shaw, inserted into the lineup for a slumping Yoan Moncada, hit his 16th homer in the second inning, a two-run shot, and added an RBI single in the fourth. • LEADING OFF: Stress over Strasburg, buggy in Cleveland
                              September 8, 2016
A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                              STRAS STRESS

The NL East-leading Nationals hope to find out more about ace Stephen Strasburg, a day after he exited in the third inning against Atlanta. He winced on the mound, then left early in his first start since Aug. 17 after being on the disabled list because of soreness in his right elbow. Manager Dusty Baker said Strasburg felt a pinch in the back of his elbow and would get an MRI.

                              BUGGY

The grounds crew in Cleveland will do its best to keep those irritating insects - the midges - from again descending on Progressive Field. The bugs, which notably interrupted a 2007 playoff game when Joba Chamberlain was pitching for the Yankees, were back in the ballpark Wednesday night when the Indians hosted Houston. The same teams finish their series in an afternoon start.

                              CHECK HIM

Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is back in Houston for tests on the inflammation in his left shoulder. He felt sore earlier this week and was sent home. Manager A.J. Hinch hopes to have the reigning AL Rookie of Year this weekend when Astros host the Cubs. Correa is batting .274 with 19 home runs and 90 RBIs for wild-card contenders.

                              TAKE IT EASY

Royals catcher Salvador Perez will get another day to rest his ailing right wrist. He was hit by a pitch from the Twins' Ervin Santana on Tuesday night and didn't start Wednesday. Kansas City is off Thursday, and manager Ned Yost hopes to have the World Series MVP behind the plate Friday night in Chicago vs. the White Sox.

                              SECOND TIME

Rays righty Alex Cobb makes his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery, pitching against CC Sabathia at Yankee Stadium. Cobb was out of the majors last year and came back last week, giving up two runs in five innings against Toronto in a no-decision.
