                • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                  September 6, 2016

Hottest team: Angels (8-1 past nine, 7-2 past nine on road)

It's way too little and too late for their postseason hopes, but the Halos are showing a lot of fight down the stretch after a difficult summer. Their offense has come alive, and so has their pitching, helping the Angels to an 8-1 mark over their past nine outings. They're also 7-2 in their past nine games as an underdog, and 7-2 in their past nine games on the road. They'll continue their series in Oakland Tuesday night, and they'll once again be slight underdogs with veteran Ricky Nolasco on the hill against rookie Zach Neal. The Angels have won seven in a row against right-handed starting pitchers, including 5-0 in their past five on the road vs. RHP. The A's have dropped nine in a row against divisional foes, and five straight vs. RHP.

Coldest team: Marlins (1-9 past 10, 3-8 past 11 at home)

The Marlins had postseason aspirations this summer, but after dropping nine of the past 10 to slip two games under .500, Miami is on life support. Pitching has been a major issue for Miami, as they have given up six or more runs in four straight, and four or more runs in each of their past seven. As a result, the 'over' is 4-0-1 over their past five games. They fell to Philadelphia 6-2 in Monday's series opener. Miami is heavily favored (-165) to top Philadelphia in Tuesday's game despite the fact they're just 3-9 in Jose Urena's past 12 outings, 1-6 in their past seven against teams with a losing record and 1-4 in their past five against divisional foes.

                  Hottest pitcher:
Corey Kluber, Indians (15-8, 3.09 ERA)

The Klubot is up to 15 wins for just the second time in his career, and first time since winning 18 games in 2014 during his Cy Young Award winning season. His WHIP of 1.05 is actually slightly better than 2014, and he has managed 189 strikeouts over 183 2/3 innings. He has improved dramatically as the season has gone on, showing no signs of slowing down. Kluber is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 26 strikeouts over the past 20 2/3 innings. The Indians have won six of their past seven games overall, and they're 36-16 over their past 52 games at home. The Tribe has also won seven straight starts with Kluber on the hill. Houston is just 3-11 in their past 14 trips to Cleveland, and 7-17 in the past 24 meetings overall.

Coldest pitcher: Yovani Gallardo, Orioles (4-7, 5.62 ERA)

Gallardo has cooled off significantly, going 0-3 with a 8.16 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over his past three outings while striking out six and walking just six in 14 1/3 innings. While the Orioles are 7-1 in Gallardo's past eight starts against a team with a losing record, they're just 1-4 in his past five road outings and 0-5 in his past five overall. The O's are also just 2-6 in his past eight games against right-handed pitching, and 0-5 in Gallardo's past five outings against American League East Division foes.

Biggest UNDER run: Giants (4-0 past four, 9-2-1 past 12)

The Giants have struggled at the plate lately, averaging just 2.4 runs per game over their past seven outings, with the 'under' going 5-1-1 during the span. The 'under' streak continued Monday night with a 6-0 setback at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. The 'under' is 4-0 in San Francisco's past four outings on the road, 4-0-1 in their past five againt National League West Division foes and 6-1-1 in Jeff Samardzija's past eight starts overall. The 'under' is 4-1 in Colorado's past five against teams with a winning record, and 6-2 in Tyler Anderson's past eight starts against teams with a winning overall record.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (5-0 past 5, 9-1 past 10)

The Rays have been involved in some high-scoring games lately, with a total of 10 or more runs in six of the past eight outings. With a total of 10 runs (8.5 line), the 'over' hit again in Monday's series opener against Baltimore. The over is 6-2 in Baltimore's past eight road games, although the 'under has been the dominant trend for the O's. The 'over' is 5-1 in Baltimore's past six road games against a right-handed starter. The over is also 23-6 in Tampa's past 29 games overall, 20-6 in their past 26 vs. RHP and 5-0 in their past five divisional games. The over is 9-2 in their past 11 home games againts a right-handed starter, too.

                  Matchup to watch:
                  Padres vs. Red Sox

The Padres nipped the Red Sox 2-1 in the series opener, cashing as a huge home underdog (+180). In Tuesday's game the Padres are once again huge 'dogs with Paul Clemens on the hill, and they might have a better than good chance to make chalk eaters sick for a second straight night. The Red Sox have won just once in the past five interleague road games, they're 2-6 in Clay Buchholz's past eight outings and 9-20 in his past 29 tries against a team with an overall losing record. The 'under' has cashed in each of the past seven meetings in San Diego, and the 'under' is 13-3 in the past 16 meetings overall against the two sides.

Betcha didn’t know: The Mariners and Rangers hook up in a battle of left-handed starting pitchers. Texas is 10-2 in their past 12 games against American League West opponents, and they're 5-2 in their past seven games against left-handed starting pitchers. The Rangers are just 1-8 in Martin Perez's past nine road outings against a team with a winning overall record. Seattle is just 2-5 in their past seven vs. RHP, and they're 1-4 in James Paxton's past five overall. Texas is also 6-2 in Martin Perez's past eight outings against the Mariners, while the Rangers are 5-1 in the past six meetings in this series. The over has also hit in five straight, including 8-1 in Martin Perez's past nine starts against the M's.

                  • LEADING OFF: Pirates try to end skid, Cessa boosts Yanks
                    September 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                    HARR-IBLE

The Pirates have lost seven in a row and fallen below .500, dropping them 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot. Ryan Vogelsong (3-4, 3.56 ERA) aims to end the slide when he starts at PNC Park against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have homered in 24 straight games - the NL record is 25 in a row, set by Atlanta in 1998 and matched the Padres this year.

                    NICE START

Yankees right-hander Luis Cessa is 4-0 since making his major league debut this season. He'll try to keep New York close in the AL wild-card chase when he starts at home vs. All-Star Aaron Sanchez (13-2) and the Blue Jays.

                    BULLPEN HELP

The Cubs are expected to activate reliever Hector Rondon from the disabled list before their game at Milwaukee. The righty has been out since Aug. 17 with a right triceps strain. He is 2-3 with 18 saves and a 2.47 ERA for the team with the best record in the majors.

                    WELCOME BACK

Reliever Koji Uehara is expected to join the Red Sox for their game in San Diego. The former closer has been out since July 20 with a strained pectoral muscle. The righty is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 39 games this season.

                    SEEING RED

The New York Mets have won 12 in a row against Cincinnati going into their matchup at Great American Ball Park. Rafael Montero starts for the Mets against Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan.

                    • Angels' Shoemaker has surgery to stop bleeding on brain
                      September 5, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker underwent surgery to stop bleeding on his brain after he was struck in the head by a line drive against the Seattle Mariners.

Shoemaker had the procedure performed late Sunday and is being treated by Dr. Manuel Ferreira of the University of Washington Medical Center. Los Angeles athletic trainer Adam Nevala is staying with Shoemaker until he is able to travel to Southern California, perhaps as soon as in a few days.

General manager Billy Eppler provided the update Monday in Oakland, saying Shoemaker had been receiving CT scans every 2-3 hours when the third image showed increased bleeding, shortly before 9 p.m. That's when surgery was determined the next step.

''The CT scan confirmed or when they actually did the operation that confirmed where the bleeding was,'' Eppler said. ''They were able to access that area. They were able to seal it, stop the bleeding. He was wheeled back up into recovery and is recovering fine.''

With one out in the second inning, Shoemaker was hit on the right side of the head on a sharp liner off the bat of Kyle Seager - a ball with an exit velocity of 105 mph, according to MLB Statcast. He was able to turn his head slightly to avoid a direct blow to his face but was unable to get his glove up in time.

Shoemaker went to the ground immediately as medical staff rushed to the field. He was down for several minutes being tended to and was bleeding from the spot where he was hit. Teammates knelt around the mound and Seager anxiously watched from first base.

Shoemaker eventually walked off the field with athletic trainers at his side.

Eppler said the 29-year-old Shoemaker - placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday - is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for next season.

''Yeah, as far as I know,'' he said.

The Angels expect Shoemaker to be cleared to travel back to Southern California sometime this week.

The GM has been in touch with Shoemaker's wife, Danielle, while Nevala spoke to Shoemaker on Monday.

''He feels good, as good as he can feel,'' Eppler said.

Manager Mike Scioscia had reached out to Shoemaker by text message, not wanting to bother him yet with a phone call.

''Everybody's been texting him. I don't think anyone wants to call him right now,'' Scioscia said. ''We've exhaled a little bit since. They monitored him and decided they needed to do surgery. They went in there and hopefully corrected what was causing the bleeding. He's resting comfortably and everything looks like it's taken care of. Now it's just the recuperation process for Matty. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.''

Demoted right-hander Tim Lincecum is a candidate to fill Shoemaker's rotation spot.

''There's a number of candidates,'' Scioscia said. ''Haven't decided on what the final look will be, but Tim threw a really good game last night.''

The Angels recalled right-hander A.J. Achter from Triple-A Salt Lake, while righty Daniel Wright also joined the club.

NEW YORK (AP) Brett Gardner made a leaping catch at the top of the left-field wall on Justin Smoak's bases-loaded drive for the final out, and the New York Yankees held on during a nervy ninth inning to beat the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 on a misty Tuesday night.

A scrambly September game with October implications seesawed to the last swing, and turned at the end in favor of the Yankees. New York won its third in a row and sent Toronto to its fourth loss in five games.

The Blue Jays had already scored twice in the ninth off Dellin Betances when they loaded the bases with one out. Blake Parker, the eighth New York pitcher, suddenly became an unlikely closer, and he struck out Kevin Pillar.

Smoak was up next, and he hit a drive to deep left. Gardner ran back, jumped and corralled the ball at the top of the padding. He immediately leaped in the air to celebrate as the Yankees rushed out to congratulate him. A few minutes later, a replay of the catch drew another ovation from the fans.

Jason Grilli (5-5) allowed a two-run homer to Chase Headley.

Chasen Shreve (2-1) wound up with the win and Blake Parker got his first save since 2013 with the Cubs.

                              ASTROS 4, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber lost for the first time since July 3 after Marwin Gonzalez connected for a three-run homer off Cleveland's ace in the second inning.

Kluber (15-9) had won his previous seven decisions, a span during which he dominated the way he did while winning the Cy Young Award in 2014. But the right-hander had a bad sequence of six batters against the Astros, who have won the first two of four games between the playoff contenders.

Gonzalez added two doubles for Houston, a major league-best 13-4 since Aug. 19.

Reliever James Hoyt (1-0) struck out two in 1 1/3 innings for his first major league win. The 29-year-old rookie replaced Brad Peacock, who was called up to replace an injured Dallas Keuchel and made his first start since April 14, 2015.

Ken Giles, Houston's fifth reliever, recorded his ninth save.

                              CARDINALS 9, PIRATES 7

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta all homered off closer Tony Watson with two outs in the ninth inning, helping St. Louis rally past Pittsburgh.

The Cardinals were down to their last strike when Carpenter sent a long drive to right-center to tie it 6-6. Grichuk followed two batters later with a two-run shot off Watson (2-4), and Peralta piled on with a solo homer as St. Louis held on to the second wild card in the NL.

Carpenter's homer was the 15th by a St. Louis pinch-hitter this season, a major league record. Yadier Molina went 4 for 5, including a first-inning grand slam. Mike Mayers (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win, and Seung-Hwan Oh worked around a solo homer to Jung Ho Kang in the ninth for his 16th save.

                              ROYALS 10, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kendrys Morales had two home runs, including a three-run blast in Kansas City's seven-run ninth inning.

Morales hit a two-run shot in the first to help the Royals overcome the loss of catcher Salvador Perez, who left the game with a right wrist contusion after he was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

Brian Dozier hit his 39th home run of the season for the Twins, moving him into a tie with Rogers Hornsby (twice) and Alfonso Soriano for fourth-most home runs by a second baseman in a season. He has homered in five straight games, tying Harmon Killebrew and Marty Cordova for the longest streak in Twins history.

Former Twin Drew Butera's bases loaded single off Brandon Kintzler (0-2) broke a 3-3 tie and got the Royals rolling in the ninth.

Kelvin Herrera (2-4) pitched one inning for the win.

                              WHITE SOX 2, TIGERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Abreu hit his fifth homer in seven games, Miguel Gonzalez came off the disabled list to throw 6 1/3 innings of six-hit ball and Chicago cooled off Detroit.

Abreu connected off Matt Boyd (5-3) in the second for his 23rd homer as Chicago got its third win in nine games.

Gonzalez (3-6) struck out four in his first start since Aug. 11 following a groin injury.

                              GIANTS 3, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Kelby Tomlinson hit a one-out, tiebreaking single in the ninth and San Francisco rallied to beat Colorado.

Javier Lopez (1-2) got one out in the eighth to earn the win. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his 31st save. He got Gerardo Parra to hit into a double play to end the game.

Buster Posey began the top of the ninth by hitting a grounder to shortstop Daniel Descalso, who overthrew first baseman Parra and allowed Posey to cruise into second. Hunter Pence followed with an infield single off closer Adam Ottavino (0-2), who was then replaced by lefty Boone Logan.

After Brandon Crawford struck out, Tomlinson lined an 0-2 fastball into left field to bring home Posey with the decisive run.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes hit the most damaging of New York's four homers, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, as the Mets rallied for their 13th straight victory over Cincinnati.

The Mets' winning streak is their longest against Cincinnati. The club record against any opponent is 15 straight wins against Pittsburgh in 1986-87.

Curtis Granderson and Jose Reyes had solo shots off Brandon Finnegan. Cespedes connected off Michael Lorenzen (2-1) for his 28th homer. Alejandro De Aza had a pinch-hit homer in the ninth.

Josh Smoker (2-0) allowed one hit in one inning.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Manny Machado capped a six-run fourth inning with a grand slam off Jake Odorizzi, leading Baltimore over Tampa Bay.

Odorizzi (9-6) lost for the first time in 10 starts since the All-Star break, giving up seven runs, six hits and three walks over four innings. Machado's slam was set up by two walks, a hit batter and J.J. Hardy's two-run double.

Yovani Gallardo (5-7) pitched five innings for Baltimore, giving up two runs (one earned) and five hits while striking out five.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonathan Villar homered to start a five-run first inning against Jason Hammel, and Milwaukee cooled off Chicago.

The NL Central-leading Cubs had won seven of eight and were 41 games over .500 after winning Monday's series opener.

But Milwaukee rallied from a 1-0 deficit as its first seven batters reached against Hammel (14-8). Villar homered on Hammel's second pitch, Ryan Braun had an RBI single, Domingo Santana singled in two runs and Martin Maldonado added a sacrifice fly.

Wily Peralta (6-9) gave up four runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings, leaving after Anthony Rizzo's second home run of the game, a two-run drive.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Pinch-runner Michael Taylor scored the go-ahead run on catcher Tyler Flowers' throwing error as part of a three-run eighth inning.

Taylor pinch-ran after reliever Jose Ramirez (2-2) walked Ryan Zimmerman. Taylor stole second and, after Danny Espinosa's walk, scored when an off-balance Flowers threw pinch-hitter Ben Revere's bunt attempt well to the left of third baseman Adonis Garcia.

Koda Glover (2-0) retired the only two batters he faced to earn the victory, while Mark Melancon earned his 39th save in 42 opportunities.

Morgan (2-9) allowed five hits and one run in six innings.

Ichiro Suzuki hit the first pinch-hit home run of his career, a two-run shot in the eighth for Miami. Stanton was activated from the disabled list about an hour before the game and delivered a pinch-hit single in the fifth for Miami.

Jose Urena (3-6) gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings for Miami, which is 11-23 since Aug. 1.

Ryon Healy, whose single broke up starter Ricky Nolasco's bid for a perfect game in the sixth, hit an RBI single before Wendle lined a hit to right to drive in pinch-runner Arismendy Alcantara and Marcus Semien.

John Axford (5-4) pitched two innings to get the win. Ryan Madsen retired three hitters for his 28th save.

Los Angeles wasted a mostly strong outing by Nolasco (5-13).

                              • Wednesday’s six-pack

                                — Penn State is 0-8 vs spread on the road under James Franklin.

                                — Since Eagles traded Sam Bradford, they went from -7.5 to -4 this weekend against the Browns. Total dropped from 45 to 41.5.

                                — Detroit’s Justin Upton has 8 homers in his last fifteen games.

                                — Astros’ Marwin Gonzalez has 36 career HRs; 32 have come with the bases empty.

                                — Giants were 57-33 at the All-Star break; they’re 17-31 since.

                                — As a Rams fan, when I see them cut players who immediately get picked up by other teams, I smile. Our talent base has improved.

                                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                                13) Showtime has a reality show on Florida State football this season; FSU trailed 28-13 at halftime of their opener Monday nite, and alumnus Jameis Winston let loose in the locker room at halftime, reaming out the offensive line. Showtime’s cameras captured the whole thing.

Winston is 22 years old, the Tampa Bay Bucs’ starting QB; surprising that in a halftime that doesn’t allow that much time for adjustments, he felt free enough to lash out at his former teammates. No cursing that I remember (I saw the clip on Twitter); it was emotional and actually it was a decent coach’s speech and obviously, it worked.

                                12) Speaking of Florida State, reminds me of Winston’s last year with the Seminoles two years ago. I’m in Las Vegas the weekend FSU is playing Miami; I’m sitting in the sportsbook with a buddy and he knew I liked Florida State to win.

“Aren’t you going to bet on Florida State?” he asked.
“No, I’m waiting until they fall behind by 10 points, then I’ll bet them.”

Florida State had a weird habit that year of falling behind early, then rallying from behind to win, much like they did against Ole Miss Monday.

Sure enough once Miami got ahead (17-7, I think) I went up to the window and bet on Florida State and they won, I collected and looked smart for a few minutes (even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then).

In-game wagering is great fun; if you’re out in Las Vegas, it gives you a chance to put money on your opinion, even after the game has started.

                                11) NFL players who get put on the practice squad (I think it is 10 per team) make $7,000 a week, $119,000 if they last the whole year there.

                                10) Twins’ 2B Brian Dozier is on fire; he has 22 HRs since July 31; no one else in the big leagues has more than 12.

                                9) When Arizona Diamondbacks fire GM Dave Stewart after this season, keep in mind he traded Dansby Swanson, the first pick in LY’s draft, for pitcher Shelby Miller, who is 2-11, 6.59 this year. Arizona also sent OF Ender Inciarte to Atlanta and he’s having a good year for the Braves.

Just an awful trade, the Diamondbacks are having a depressing season and it is hard to imagine Stewart getting a new contract, which is too bad, as Stewart was a really good pitcher who helped the Oakland A’s win the ’89 World Series. But good lord, he has had a terrible time as Arizona’s GM.

                                8) Tennessee-Virginia Tech play football at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend; 150,000 fans are expected. Bristol is 122 miles from Blacksburg, 113 miles from Knoxville. Someone’s making a boatload of money on this deal.

                                7) Astros’ OF George Springer was a 48th-round draft pick of the Twins as a high school senior, so he went to college at UConn instead. Three years later, he was the 11th pick in the whole draft.

First pick of the 48th round would be the 1,411th player taken, so Springer did an amazing job of improving his stock over a three-year period.

                                6) We talked last weekend about Houston Cougars coach Tom Herman and the $5M bonus he gets if Houston joins a Power 5 league. Herman’s agent is former NFL player Trace Armstrong, who was a defensive end for 15 years in the NFL. Pretty interesting career change there, player to agent.

                                5) Back to Florida State football for a second; coach Jimbo Fisher makes $5.1M a year!!!! LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron took a pay cut this year, from $1.5M to $1.2M and he’s not even the head coach.

                                4) Random college football thoughts, as far as college teams developing talent for the NFL:

                                — College coach’s job is to win games, to justify his $1M+ salary, not to develop pro players.
                                — That said, if Jameis Winston is an NFL star, it sure as hell helps Jimbo Fisher’s recruiting efforts.
                                — Players who play well on winning teams will get drafted; hell, guys who play well on lousy teams will get drafted.
                                — Not that long ago, Gus Malzahn, Art Briles, Hugh Freeze were high school coaches. Their heads have to be spinning at how much cash they are making.

                                3) Major league games and minor league games use different baseballs; this is completely stupid. I get that our big leagues and Japanese leagues use different baseballs (their baseballs are smaller) but for minor leaguers to have to adjust to a different (smoother surface, pitchers say) baseball is just plain dumb.

                                2) Topic of discussion on Mets’ games at various times this year has been whether or not modern players work too hard BEFORE THE GAME, which is why they get fatigued (mentally?) and need to be given “recovery days”, as the Marlins call them, during the season.

They watch film of that night’s pitcher, they lift weights, they hit in the indoor cage during the day. Keith Hernandez is adamant that players get to the ballpark too early each day and work too hard before the game

1– Monday night, I watched the Jon Gruden coaching session with Jared Goff for the first time on ESPN– it was done before the NFL Draft. Half hour show; Gruden was impressed with Goff, but he KILLED THE CAL OFFENSE and how many times they allowed the quarterback to get whacked by pass rushers.

Cal coaches couldn’t have been too excited by the show. Bears have several plays that are designed runs, but the QB has the option, if he sees LBs playing the run too aggressively, to keep the ball and throw a pass.

Problem is linemen are blocking for a running play and the QB is left open to getting his butt kicked if he decides to throw the ball. They showed some big plays Goff hit LY but he was on his back at the end of all of them
