-Tiebreaker games will be played to determine Division Championships, even if the two tied Clubs are assured of participating in the Postseason. If a Division Championship tiebreaker game is necessary, the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

-In the event of a tie for the division championship or a Wild Card spot, a one-game playoff will break the tie. If three or four clubs are tied for first place in a division at the end of the regular season, and the two non-division winners would NOT be Wild Card clubs, a playoff will be played among the teams in question.

-If two Clubs are tied for both Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

Brian McCann hit two homers for the Yankees, who moved a season-high nine games over .500 (74-65).

Austin homered off Erasmo Ramirez (7-11) on a 3-2 pitch for his third homer since being called up Aug. 13.

New York moved within two games of Baltimore for the second AL wild card and four games of AL East-leading Boston.

Tommy Layne (2-1) entered and struck out pinch-hitter Logan Morrison to end the ninth.

The Rays got two homers each from Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza Jr.

Taijuan Walker (5-10), who lasted just two-thirds of an inning in his previous start, shook off two game-opening walks to finish five innings, giving up three runs and seven hits to win for the first time in six starts.

Evan Scribner and Nick Vincent combined for three scoreless innings and rookie Edwin Diaz pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

Derek Holland (7-7) allowed four runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out five. Despite the loss, Texas still leads the AL West by 8 1/2 games.

Seager's home run off Jake Diekman, his career-high 27th, put the Mariners up 6-3 in the seventh.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan Schimpf hit a three-run homer and tied a career-high with four RBIs and Clayton Richard pitched seven scoreless innings for San Diego.

Schimpf, a rookie second baseman, hit his 18th home run of the season, all coming since July 1.

Richard (2-3) was sharp as he scattered six hits, walked two and had eight strikeouts.

Keith Hessler and Brandon Morrow pitched the final two innings. Cristhian Adames spoiled the shutout with a one-out homer in the ninth off Morrow.

                      PIRATES 4, REDS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched a six-hitter to stay unbeaten with Pittsburgh and Jung Ho Kang hit a two-run double to key a three-run first inning as the Pirates extended the Reds' losing streak to five games.

Nova (12-6) pitched his second complete game in seven starts since being acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade on Aug. 1. He struck out four, walked none, got 15 of his outs on ground balls and retired the first 12 batters while throwing 94 pitches.

Nova improved to 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA in seven starts with the Pirates. He has issued just two walks in 46 2/3 innings.

Kang's double opened the scoring and he came home on a single by Francisco Cervelli as the Pirates took an early 3-0 lead against Dan Straily (11-8).

The Pirates, still on the fringe of the National League wild card race, won their second straight following an eight-game losing streak.

                      PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ryan Howard hit a three-run homer and, Alec Asher pitched six innings of two-hit ball coming off a suspension for Philadelphia.

Peter Bourjos homered for the Phillies, who have won three of four.

Asher (1-0), who earned his first major league victory, was suspended for 80 games while on the disabled list with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in June after a positive drug test. He made four minor league appearances beginning in late August and his suspension ended Sept. 4.

The right-hander walked one without a strikeout.

Jeanmar Gomez pitched the ninth inning for his 36th save.

A.J. Cole (1-2) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out eight without a walk.

                      BREWERS 12, CARDINALS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia hit back-to-back homers as Milwaukee continued its recent road dominance.

Hernan Perez had four hits and three RBIs for the Brewers, who won their season-high fifth straight on the road and have won seven of their last eight games.

The Cardinals fell to 30-38 at home and dropped a half game behind the idle New York Mets for the second wild card spot.

Santana and Arcia connected on consecutive pitches in the second inning. It was the seventh time Milwaukee hit back-to-back homers this season.

Arcia had three hits and raised his average to .367 over his last 15 games.

Brewers right-hander Junior Guerra (8-3) needed 74 pitches to get through five innings in his second start back from the disabled list. It was his first career win against St. Louis in three tries.

Jaime Garcia (10-12) struggled for the fourth time in his last five starts, losing a career-high fourth straight decision.

                      INDIANS 10, ASTROS 7

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Indians scored two runs on a controversial bases-loaded wild pitch by David Paulino in the third inning that led to the ejection of Houston manager A.J. Hinch.

Cleveland led 2-1 when Lonnie Chisenhall attempted to check his swing on a pitch in the dirt. The ball bounced away from catcher Jason Castro and rolled toward the on-deck circle near the Indians dugout.

Play was allowed to continue, although replays showed Chisenhall fouled off the pitch. All three runners - Francisco Lindor, Mike Napoli and Jose Ramirez - crossed the plate.

Hinch protested the ruling and was ejected by plate umpire Jim Joyce. After a video review, Lindor and Napoli were allowed to score for a 4-1 lead, and Ramirez was placed at second.

Trevor Bauer (11-6) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Cody Allen, Cleveland's fifth reliever, struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 26th save.

Making his first major league start, Paulino (0-1) gave up four runs and four hits in three innings.

                      • Friday’s six-pack

Submitted for your perusal, NFL trends for Week 1………..

                        — Ravens are 0-10-2 in last 12 games as a favorite.

                        — Dallas covered one of last eight home openers.

                        — Chargers are 3-10 in last 13 divisional games.

                        — Indianapolis covered one of last eight season openers.

                        — Falcons are 2-8 in last ten games as a home favorite.

                        — Green Bay is 9-4 in last 13 games as a road favorite.

Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend………

                        13) Four QBs start this weekend (Siemian started last night) who’ve never started an NFL game before (Siemian is only one who took a snap and he took one, and took a knee). Rookie QBs generally fail right off the bat, even guys who wind up being great. We’ll see how these four make out.

                        12) Virginia Tech-Tennessee are playing at a NASCAR track Saturday night in front of 150,000 fans. Vols QB Dobbs is a senior; before he graduates, would be nice if he started throwing with some accuracy. Tennessee was very lucky to beat Appalachian State in OT last week.

                        11) No way the Giants are a better team now, after firing a Hall of Fame coach and keeping both coordinators, promoting one to head coach. And if Eli Manning ever gets hurt, good Lord they’ll be terrible; their backup QBs are putrid.

                        10) BYU-Utah renew their Beehive State rivalry this week; Utah led 35-7 at the half in the Las Vegas Bowl nine months ago, hung on for 35-28 win. This is a fierce rivalry and will be a fun game to watch.

                        9) This is the first time since 2012 that Ryan Fitzpatrick has been on the same team two years in a row; can he lead the Jets to the playoffs? While I’m here, why the hell did the Jets keep four QBs? It is nonsensical.

                        8) Arkansas struggled to beat Louisiana Tech 21-20 last week; TCU beat South Dakota State 59-41 (24-all at half). Neither of these results were impressive; which teams improves the most from Week 1 and wins this game?

                        7) Carson Wentz missed most of LY at North Dakota State with an injury, then he missed almost all of this summer with a rib injury, now all of a sudden he is the Eagles’ starting QB? Why? Cleveland is 1-16 in season openers, or else I’d be all over them in this game.

                        6) Penn State is 0-8 vs spread on the road under James Franklin; Nittany Lions have a new QB making his first road start, at Pitt, in renewal of an old rivalry. Franklin won at Vanderbilt; you’d think he will win in Happy Valley, too.

                        5) Who plays QB for the Vikings in Tennessee? Whoever it is will hand off to Adrian Peterson a lot. Dick LeBeau’s Titan defense will blitz the hell out of whichever QB plays. If Minnesota fans aren’t nervous enough, there is this: Sam Bradford gets hurt……..a lot.

                        4) Mississippi State lost at home to South Alabama LW, after leading 17-0 at the half. Now Bulldogs host SEC rival South Carolina, which rallied from down 10-0 in 4th quarter to win at Vandy last week.

                        3) Last game of the week sees the Los Angeles Rams playing in Santa Clara against their rivals, the 49ers. What happens if Case Keenum plays great this year and the Rams make the playoffs? Keenum is a free agent this winter; would they let him walk, or would they recoup some of their lost draft picks and trade Jared Goff? Stranger things have happened.

                        2) Washington State opened the last two years by losing to a I-AA team, but Mike Leach is 12-3 vs spread in his last 15 games as a road underdog. Should be a fun game on the blue carpet, the Coogs vs Boise State.

1– Jimmy Garoppolo will be the story of the week, for better or worse; his backup is NC State rookie Jacoby Brissett. Expect New England to run it a lot and expect the Cardinals to blitz the hell out of Garoppolo.

                        • LEADING OFF: Kershaw back vs Fernandez, Porcello goes for 20
                          September 8, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

                          KERSHAW RETURNS

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (11-2, 1.79) will return from the disabled list to face Jose Fernandez (13-8, 3.30) and the Marlins. It will be Kershaw's first start since June 26 because of a mild disk herniation. Despite missing over two months, he still ranked second among major league pitchers in wins above replacement entering Thursday, per Fangraphs , trailing the Mets' Noah Syndergaard and just ahead of Fernandez.

                          FIRST TO 20?

Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello (19-3, 3.23) can become this year's first 20-game winner when Boston faces Toronto to start a pivotal three-game series. Porcello is 5-0 with a 2.47 ERA over his past six starts. The Red Sox lead the Blue Jays by one game in the AL East. This is the first of six games the teams have left against each other, including a three-game series at Fenway Park to end the season.

                          STEPPING IN FOR STRAS'

With Stephen Strasburg's status in the air, Tanner Roark (14-8, 2.89) may prove a critical piece for the Nationals in the postseason. The right-hander gets the ball against Philadelphia, a team he shut out over seven innings in a win Aug. 29.

                          LESTER'S ROLL

Jon Lester (15-4, 2.61) tries to follow one of his best starts this season when the Cubs face the Astros. Lester pitched nine innings with just 102 pitches in a 2-1 win over the Giants last time out. Rookie Joe Musgrove (2-3, 5.06) is up for Houston.

                          ROUGHED UP RANGERS

Texas ace Yu Darvish (5-4, 3.45) tries to rebound in a start against the Angels. Darvish gave up five runs in four innings in a 7-6 loss to Houston last time out, and Texas has allowed an average of eight runs per game over its past six.

                          SHORT HOPS

Rays shortstop Matt Duffy will have surgery on his left heel performed by Dr. Bob Anderson, team orthopedist for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Duffy is out for the season after being acquired from San Francisco for left-hander Matt Moore on Aug. 1. Tampa Bay signed shortstop Alexei Ramirez - released Sunday by the Padres - and will also count on Nick Franklin and Brad Miller at short.
