TORONTO (AP) David Ortiz hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Hanley Ramirez also connected, and the Boston Red Sox outslugged Toronto 11-8 Sunday, reclaiming a two-game lead over the Blue Jays in the AL East.

Ortiz put Boston up 10-8 with a drive off Joaquin Benoit. It was his 41st career home run at Rogers Centre, his highest total at any road stadium.

With his 535th career homer, Ortiz moved past Jimmie Foxx into sole possession of 18th place on baseball's career list. He also increased his RBI total to 110, the most by a player age 40 or above since Dave Winfield had 108 for Toronto in 1992.

Edwin Encarnacion homered twice and Troy Tulowitzki hit his third career grand slam for the Blue Jays, who are tied with Baltimore for the wild-card lead. Bo Schultz (0-1) got the loss.

Robbie Ross Jr. (3-2) got two outs for the win. Craig Kimbrel, the ninth Boston pitcher, worked the ninth for his 25th save.

      CUBS 9, ASTROS 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Jorge Soler and Addison Russell homered to lead Chicago past Houston, moving the Cubs closer to clinching the NL Central.

Soler hit a solo home run as part of Chicago's four-run third, and Russell hit a two-run shot - his 20th of the season - in the fourth as the Cubs built a 9-0 lead.

Chicago extended its lead in the NL Central to 16 games over St. Louis.

Houston fell 9 1/2 games behind Texas in the AL West and 3 1/2 back of Toronto and Baltimore in the wild-card race.

Jake Arrieta (17-6) allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Jose Altuve, Yulieski Gurriel and Evan Gattis hit solo homers for the Astros. Mike Fiers (10-7) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

      ORIOLES 3, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Chris Tillman pitched six impressive innings in his return from the disabled list, leading the Orioles to the win.

Michael Bourn and Jonathan Schoop homered off Justin Verlander (14-8) as Baltimore moved into a tie with Toronto for second in the AL East and the top spot in the wild-card standings. The Orioles begin a three-game series with the division-leading Red Sox on Monday night.

Detroit fell two games behind the wild cards. The Yankees are also two back of the Orioles and Blue Jays.

Tillman (16-5) allowed a run and four hits after being activated before the game. He hadn't pitched since Aug. 20 because of right shoulder bursitis.

Three relievers finished for the Orioles, with Zach Britton pitching the ninth for his 41st save in 41 chances.

      GIANTS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Matt Moore struck out 11 in seven innings and Hunter Pence hit a key two-run double, helping San Francisco to the series sweep.

The Giants pulled within three games of NL West-leading Los Angeles, which lost 3-0 at Miami. San Francisco leads the wild-card standings.

Moore (10-11) gave up two runs and eight hits. Hunter Strickland got four outs for his third save of the season.

The Giants swept a road series from Arizona for the second time this season and sent the Diamondbacks to their sixth straight loss.

Arizona ace Zack Greinke (12-6) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

      RAYS 4, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Corey Dickerson hit a two-run homer, Matt Andriese won for the first time since June and the Rays stopped the Yankees' seven-game winning streak.

Logan Forsythe and Brad Miller also went deep for the last-place Rays, who had lost three straight and six of seven. Andriese (7-7) pitched five innings of one-run ball and Alex Colome got three quick outs for his 32nd save.

Chase Headley homered and Brett Gardner had an RBI single among his three hits for the Yankees, who are two games back of Toronto and Baltimore for the top spot in the wild-card standings.

Rookie right-hander Luis Cessa (4-1) gave up all three Rays homers in 5 2/3 innings.

      ROYALS 2, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Ian Kennedy and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, helping the Royals beat Chris Sale and the White Sox.

Kendrys Morales homered on Sale's first pitch of the second and Eric Hosmer did the same in the fourth. The Royals are four games behind Baltimore and Detroit for the top spot in the AL wild-card standings.

Kennedy (11-9) walked four, but Adam Eaton's leadoff single was the only hit off the right-hander in six innings. Wade Davis worked the ninth for his 24th save.

Sale (15-8) struck out 12 in eight innings while becoming the first White Sox pitcher with four consecutive 200-strikeout seasons.

      METS 10, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes hit a grand slam for New York, and Seth Lugo won his fourth straight start.

The Mets have won seven of eight and are 16-5 since Aug. 20. They moved back into position for the second NL wild card, a half-game ahead of the Cardinals.

Lugo (4-2) allowed two runs in seven innings. The rookie is 3-1 with a 1.99 ERA in five career starts. He joined the rotation on Aug. 19.

Cespedes drove in the game's first five runs off Williams Perez (2-3), who struck out two in 2 2/3 innings. Perez left the game with right triceps impingement.

      BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ryan Braun hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning, and the Brewers dropped the Cardinals back in the NL wild-card race.

The Cardinals are a half-game behind the Mets for the second wild card.

Braun connected against Kevin Siegrist (5-3) for his 27th homer.

St. Louis had tied it in the eighth when Matt Carpenter doubled and scored on Stephen Piscotty's sacrifice fly off Tyler Thornburg (6-5).

      MARLINS 3, DODGERS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Jose Urena pitched 8 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, leading Miami to the win.

Christian Yelich had two hits and drove in a run for the Marlins, who have won three of four. Justin Bour also drove in a run.

Urena (4-6) retired the first 14 batters he faced. He struck out four and walked none while throwing 71 of 108 pitches for strikes.

The 24-year-old Urena was lifted after giving up a base hit to Josh Reddick. A.J. Ramos got the final out for his 34th save in 37 chances.

Los Angeles right-hander Kenta Maeda (14-9) allowed three runs, two earned, and eight hits in six innings.

      NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Gio Gonzalez pitched seven sharp innings for NL East-leading Washington, and Anthony Rendon doubled home the tiebreaking run.

Gonzalez (11-9) gave up one run and four hits, bouncing back nicely from a rough outing against Atlanta in his last start.

It was 1-all when Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk from Adam Morgan (2-10) to open the seventh. Rendon then doubled to the wall in left-center off reliever Edubray Ramos and later scored on a passed ball by catcher A.J. Ellis.

Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his 41st save.

Tommy Joseph hit a tying homer for the Phillies in the seventh. Freddy Galvis homered in the eighth.

      INDIANS 7, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Cleveland ace Corey Kluber struck out 10 in seven innings, and Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer.

Kluber (16-9) gave up an unearned run and four hits while passing the 200-strikeout mark for the third straight season. Roberto Perez added two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run for the Indians, who increased their lead in the AL Central to seven games over Detroit.

Jose Berrios (2-6) lasted just 2 2/3 innings for the Twins, who committed four errors and managed just five hits.

      REDS 8, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Tyler Holt and Brandon Phillips had three hits apiece, leading Brandon Finnegan and the Reds to the victory.

Holt drove in three runs and Phillips scored three times as last-place Cincinnati (60-82) closed the four-game set with three straight wins. Pittsburgh (69-72) has dropped 11 of 13 to fall off the pace in the NL wild-card race.

Finnegan (9-10) struck out seven in five innings, but allowed five hits and walked five. Jumbo Diaz then pitched two innings and Ross Ohlendorf and Wandy Peralta each got three outs, completing a seven-hitter.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Vogelsong (3-5) was charged with six runs and seven hits in four innings.

      ANGELS 3, RANGERS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Andrelton Simmons hit two solo home runs, sending Jered Weaver and the Angels to the win.

Simmons began the day with only one homer this season. Yunel Escobar hit a leadoff drive in the first inning for the Angels.

Adrian Beltre homered twice for the AL West-leading Rangers. It was his fourth multihomer game of the season and the 31st of his career.

Weaver (11-11) gave up two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out a season-high eight. Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save.

Texas right-hander Colby Lewis (6-2) gave up all three homers in 5 1/3 innings.

      MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ketel Marte hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, helping Seattle to its fifth straight win.

The Mariners are 3 1/2 games back in the AL wild-card race.

Marte had three hits for Seattle, and Mike Zunino homered and doubled.

Zunino doubled off Ryan Madson (5-5) to begin the ninth and pinch runner Ben Gamel moved up on a single by Leonys Martin. Marte followed with his go-ahead single.

Steve Cishek (3-6) pitched a scoreless eighth. Edwin Diaz closed for his 15th save.

      ROCKIES 3, PADRES 2, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Mark Reynolds homered leading off the 10th inning and the Rockies salvaged a split of a four-game series.

Charlie Blackmon also homered for the Rockies, his 25th, and hit an RBI single.

Reynolds' homer was the 250th of his career and 13th of the season. It came on a 2-2 pitch from Kevin Quackenbush (7-6).

Jake McGee (2-3) pitched the ninth for the win. Adam Ottavino pitched the 10th for his fourth save.

      • Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday……..

Random thoughts on all of Sunday’s NFL games………

Buccaneers 31, Falcons 24– Three of Bucs’ four TDs came on plays of 23+ yards; former Atlanta HC Smith gets some revenge here- he is Tampa Bay’s new DC. Before the 2015 Draft, there was a lot of debate as to whether Winston/Mariota was better choice as the #1 pick. Not much debate now; Winston is very good.

Vikings 25, Titans 16– Minnesota won despite not scoring TD on offense; LY, that happened only two times in whole NFL, with Denver getting both wins. Titans led this game 10-0 at half; Vikings looked awful on offense, but then the Minnesota defense scored two TDs in second half to win the game. Three trips to red zone, only six points for Minnesota. Hard to believe Bradford won’t be the starting QB soon.

        Eagles 29, Browns 10–
Philly had 17-yard edge in average starting field position; Wentz was 22-37/270 passing as he won his first NFL start. Browns have 17 rookies on their squad and it showed. RGIII hurt his left arm late in game (check status). Cleveland had four plays of 20+ yards; all four came on 1st down plays (rest of NFL, 29 of 66 plays of 20+ yards came on first down plays).

        Bengals 23, Jets 22–
Jets had seven sacks, outrushed Cincy 152-57, but Dalton led Bengals 55 yards on nine plays on GW drive, with Nugent making 47-yard FG with 0:54 left for the win. Teams got to red zone a combined eight times, with only three TDs- they combined to go 7-23 on third down. This was a fun game to watch; Dalton threw for 366 yards for Bengals.

Game of the Day: Raiders 35, Saints 34– Old-style AFL game here, with total yardage 507-486. Jack Del Rio went for 2 points and the win with 0:47 here and got it- on their last three drives, Oakland ran 17 plays for 210 yards and three TDs. Brees threw for 419 yards including a 98-yard TD pass. Raiders survived 14 penalties for 141 yards.

Comeback of the Day: Chiefs 33, Chargers 27 OT– San Diego led this game 24-3 with 5:00 left in 3rd quarter; horrific loss. On their last six drives, Chiefs scored four TDs, kicked a FG, gaining 317 yards on 42 plays with one turnover. Alex Smith is now 69-52-1 as an NFL starter.

San Diego started three drives in KC territory, but scored only one TD, one FG on those drives and that wound up costing them.

Ravens 13, Bills 7– Bills ran only 48 plays for 160 yards. My one thought here is: thank God Rex Ryan doesn’t coach the Rams. Buffalo had a 9-yard edge in field position, which is pretty strong, but still lost.

NFL-wide this week, 15 of 62 TDs this week (so far) came on scoring plays on 20+ yards; 48 of those 62 TDs came on drives of 70+ yards. No TDs on defense/special teams (yet).

Texans 23, Bears 14– Houston converted 12 of 20 third down plays, ran 18 more plays than Chicago, outscoring Bears 13-0 in second half. On four drives that started 75+ yards from goal line, Texans did not score; on their other seven drives with better field position, they scored three TDs, kicked two FGs. Houston sacked Jay Cutler five times.

Packers 27, Jaguars 23– Green Bay led 21-17 at half, won despite scoring only six points in second half on a sweltering day in North Florida. Jacksonville was pretty impressive in defeat; they outgained Pack 348-294, averaged 7.1 yards/pass, but ran for only 48 yards.

        Seahawks 12, Dolphins 10–
After not scoring a TD the whole game, Russell Wilson led Seattle on a 14-play, 75-yard drive to win the game in last minute. Tough loss for Miami; they were +2 in turnovers and had 10-yard edge in field position, but were outgained 352-222 and had only 64 rushing yards. Dolphins had a 26-yard FG blocked and lost ball on downs in red zone early in game.

        Giants 20, Cowboys 19–
First time Giants beat Cowboys in eight Week 1 meetings. Not many teams go 10-17 on third down and score only one TD; only Dallas TD drive was 35 yards. Giants had three TDs, no FG tries; Dallas had one TD, four FG tries.

Lions 39, Colts 35– Watching last 2:00 of this game, with Luck/Stafford driving their teams in 2:00 drill for go-ahead scores; star QBs cannot be overpaid– really difficult to have good team without one. Detroit led this game 21-3, almost let it slip away.

Favorites are 4-9 vs spread so far this week, home teams 6-7; over is 6-7.

        • LEADING OFF: Dodgers make rare visit to Yankee Stadium
          September 11, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

          OCTOBER COMES EARLY

Reggie Jackson hitting three home runs, Don Larsen pitching a perfect game, Jackie Robinson sliding into Yogi Berra. Dodgers vs. Yankees always conjures up World Series memories. Matchups in the regular season? Not so much. Since interleague play began in 1997, the Dodgers have visited Yankee Stadium for just one day - they split a doubleheader in the Bronx in 2013. The NL West leaders open a three-game series against the AL playoff contenders, with Los Angeles rookie Jose De Leon starting against Bryan Mitchell.

          BIRDS IN BEANTOWN

Red Sox lefty David Price tries for his seventh straight win when he faces Baltimore at Fenway Park in a game full of playoff implications. Boston leads the AL East while the Orioles and Toronto are tied two games back for the wild-card spots. Lefty Wade Miley starts for the O's.

          HE'S READY

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated All-Star shortstop Aledmys Diaz from the disabled list. He missed 36 games after his right thumb was broken when he was hit by a pitch. Diaz was batting a team-best .312 with 14 homers and 57 RBIs in 96 games when he got hurt. The wild-card contenders host the NL Central-leading Cubs.

          NEW START

Mat Latos makes his first start for the NL East-leading Nationals, facing the visiting Mets. The 28-year-old righty was 6-2 with a 4.62 ERA for the White Sox when they cut him in June. Latos has won once in relief for Washington. He was a top starter for the Reds a few years ago when they were managed by Dusty Baker, now the Nationals' skipper.

          METS ON THE MEND

Mets lefty Steven Matz is set to throw again at the team's spring training complex in Florida as he rehabs from shoulder tightness. Teammate Jacob deGrom might toss off a mound as he recovers from soreness in his right forearm.

          • A's release DH Butler, still owed $10M
            September 11, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics have released designated hitter Billy Butler despite still owing him $10 million for next season.

The A's made the move Sunday.

Last month, Butler went on the concussion disabled list after a clubhouse altercation with teammate Danny Valencia.

The 30-year-old Butler was in the second season of a three-year, $30 million contract. He was batting .276 with four home runs and 31 RBIs in 85 games this year.

''It was time to move on,'' A's general manager David Forst said. ''The at-bats just weren't there.''

Said manager Bob Melvin: ''We wish him the best, but it just never ended up being a great fit here.''

Butler acknowledged frustration with a diminished platoon role in Oakland after playing every day most of his career. He believes he still has a lot to offer.

''You don't have the type of at-bats I have in the big leagues with the type of success I have for not being able to hit both sides,'' Butler said. ''I feel I can bring that to a team at a championship level and I've proven that.''

                  • MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Dodging the Over

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a solid Under bet this week as they kick off a three-game inteleague series Monday at Yankee Stadium.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including the pitching-rich Los Angeles Dodgers who travel to New York to take on the Yankees.

                    Welcome Mat

It has come to this for the Washington Nationals, who have been forced into starting right-hander Mat Latos for an important series opener against the visiting New York Mets. Latos will start in place of Stephen Strasburg, who may be lost for the season with an elbow injury. Strasburg was one of the top value pitchers in the league in 2016, going into Sunday ranking 13th in units won at $944. Latos wasn’t bad himself - racking up $629 with the White Sox earlier in the season - but struggled so poorly after a hot start that he was released and subsequently picked up by Washington.

                    Over and Out

The Minnesota Twins have settled into a nice groove, offering bettors a plethora of losses and Overs. The Twins continue playing out the string this week as they kick off a four-game road series against the Detroit Tigers. Minnesota is coming off a 4-6 homestead in which it posted eight straight Overs before registering back-to-back unders Saturday and Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. Minnesota is a lowly 24-44 away from Target Field this season, but has boosted Over bettors’ bottom lines by going 39-24-5 O/U through 68 road games in 2016.

                    Dodging the Over

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a solid Under bet this week as they kick off a three-game inteleague series Monday at Yankee Stadium. The National League West leaders are just 62-75-5 O/U for the season, and will be sending a pair of hot Under plays to the hill in this one. Teenage phenom Julio Urias gets the call Tuesday; he began his major-league career on a rocky note but has posted four straight quality starts while lowering his ERA to 3.69. Things get even tougher for the Yankees on Wednesday, as Dodgers ace and Under poster boy Clayton Kershaw takes the mound.

                    Injury Updates

                    * The Texas Rangers haven’t missed a beat despite losing outfielder Shin-Soo Choo for the season to a forearm injury. Texas is 59-39 SU for a whopping $2,533 units for the season with Choo out of the lineup; they’re 16-7-1 O/U in the last 24 games he has missed.

                    * Jabari Blash’s absence from the San Diego lineup has had a negative impact on the Padres’ fortunes. The Padres are 6-12 SU for -$347 since Blash was placed on the 15-day disables list with a finger injury. They’re 8-8-2 O/U in his absence.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * Chicago White Sox slugger Todd Frazier has hit a September wall, going just 2-for-20 over his previous six games to see his average plummet to .213. Frazier is slashing a dismal .216/.288/.405 since the All-Star break, during which the White Sox have fallen out of contention.

                    * The opposite has been the case for Kansas City Royals DH Kendrys Morales, who has been one of the hottest hitters in the league over the past week. Morales went deep five times since Monday, including a solo shot in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the White Sox; he added 14 RBIs in six games.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * Francisco Liriano will look to get over the break-even point in a Toronto uniform Monday as he leads the Blue Jays against visiting Tampa Bay. Liriano has been a -$2 pitcher in four starts with Toronto - a big improvement over his time with Pittsburgh, when he lost 511 units in 21 starts.

                    * The Boston Red Sox have a winning record with David Price on the hill, but he’s still working his way back into the black as he faces Baltimore’s Dylan Bundy on Tuesday. Price comes into this one at -$441 even though the Red Sox are 17-13 in his 30 starts.

                    Totals Trend

The Kansas City Royals are working to shed their label as a slam-dunk Under play, going Over in 10 of their last 12 games. Despite the run of high totals, the Royals are just 63-71-8 O/U for the season.

                            • No-hit bids are fun but come with their own set of risks
                              September 12, 2016

Bruce Bochy and Dave Roberts manage rival teams in the NL West, but they can probably agree on one thing: A no-hitter is no easy spot for a manager.

Roberts caused quite a stir Saturday night when he pulled Los Angeles Dodgers starter Rich Hill after seven innings, even though the left-hander was working on a perfect game. Hill has been bothered by a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. The Dodgers eventually allowed two hits after Hill's departure.

Last month, Bochy was pacing around the dugout as San Francisco's Matt Moore closed in on a no-hitter. Bochy let Moore - who missed most of the last two seasons after Tommy John surgery - stay in until he allowed his first hit with two outs in the ninth. Moore threw 133 pitches.

Now that managers are more sensitive to high pitch counts, a no-hitter in progress can become pretty stressful.

''They're not used to throwing 120, 130 pitches. You have guys that sometimes have had injuries in their career that you're concerned about,'' New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ''Sometimes as a manager, you want to see it take place, you want to see a guy have a perfect game and you want to see a guy have a no-hitter. But there's part of you that says you don't want to be in that situation.''

Roberts had to take into account Hill's health problems and the Dodgers' playoff prospects, weighing all of that against Hill's opportunity to accomplish something special. Managers around baseball understood the move - and so did Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber.

''It's probably disappointing at that point in time, but they're playing for more than just one game,'' Kluber said. ''They're trying to get him lined up to be a big part of their team for the playoffs, I'd imagine. I think that ultimately when you look at it, that's the reason, and it's hard to argue with it.''

Detroit manager Brad Ausmus pulled lefty Daniel Norris after five perfect innings last year, but there was little controversy about that because Norris was on a pitch count following an oblique strain.

Ausmus said the score can also factor into the decision.

''If it's a close game and it's a guy that's pitch count is climbing, I think ultimately you've got to make the decision if you think it's the best way the team can win a game,'' Ausmus said. ''It's about amassing wins, not amassing no-hitters.''

Hill had thrown 89 pitches when he was taken out.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

                              DOWN TO THE WIRE

Only five of the 15 teams in the American League are under .500, so there's quite a race on for the postseason spots. The AL East is particularly wild, with Boston leading Toronto and Baltimore by two games. The New York Yankees are another two games back.

The Blue Jays and Orioles currently occupy the wild cards, but Detroit is a couple games behind, tied with the Yankees. Seattle and Houston are 1 1/2 games further behind, and it's another half-game back to Kansas City.

So that's 10 teams either occupying a postseason spot or within four games of one.

                              CLINCHING TIME

The Chicago Cubs have a chance to wrap up the NL Central in St. Louis at the home of the rival Cardinals. Chicago's magic number is five heading into a three-game series at St. Louis that starts Monday.

                              FANTASY FOCUS

Fantasy owners probably didn't mind that much when Hill was pulled from his perfect game bid. It was only his third start since the beginning of August - and the first time he'd thrown seven innings since May 23. A step in the right direction, to say the least.

                              LINE OF THE WEEK

Hill is the pick here, although Colorado's Chad Bettis earns an honorable mention for his two-hitter against San Francisco on Monday.
