ST. LOUIS (AP) Kyle Hendricks took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up Jeremy Hazelbaker's leadoff homer, and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 Monday night to close in on the NL Central crown.

Hazelbaker drove an 0-2 pitch into the right-field stands for his 12th home run. Hendricks (15-7), the major league ERA leader at 2.03, was relieved by Aroldis Chapman.

Ben Zobrist and Dexter Fowler homered for the Cubs, who lowered their magic number to three for clinching the division title. They lead the second-place Cardinals by 17 games and can wrap up the NL Central with a three-game sweep in St. Louis.

The Cardinals remained a half-game behind the Mets for the league's second wild card.

Soon after Hazelbaker's shot cleared the fence, teammates went to the mound to talk to Hendricks - leading to an argument between Cubs manager Joe Maddon and plate umpire Joe West.

Maddon was ejected, and Chapman entered to finish the one-hitter. He got three outs for his 14th save with Chicago, and is 34 for 37 overall this year with the Cubs and Yankees.

Hendricks, who threw 96 pitches, struck out seven and walked two.

It was the fourth no-hit bid broken up in the ninth inning this season. Cubs teammate Jake Arrieta tossed the lone no-hitter in the majors this year, winning 16-0 at Cincinnati on April 21.

Mike Leake (9-10) pitched six innings and allowed four runs (three earned).

      NATIONALS 8, METS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Starting pitcher Mat Latos hit a solo home run and Anthony Rendon added a three-run shot as Washington beat New York.

Latos had a solid first start with the Nationals, but left the game with one out in the fifth inning when he appeared to injure his right leg.

Reynaldo Lopez (3-3) was among three relievers who combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings as the NL East leaders won their fourth straight. They increased their lead over New York to 10 games - matching their largest cushion of the season - and reduced their magic number to nine to clinch their third division title in five years.

Mets starter Rafael Montero (0-1) allowed six runs, five hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.

      RED SOX 12, ORIOLES 2

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz hit his 536th home run to tie Mickey Mantle for 17th on baseball's career list, and David Price allowed just a pair of solo homers for AL East-leading Boston.

Chris Young homered, doubled twice and singled, and Hanley Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox, who maintained a two-game lead over Toronto.

The Red Sox won for the fifth time in six games.

Price (16-8) gave up two hits in eight innings for his seventh straight victory, the longest winning streak of his career.

Former Red Sox starter Wade Miley (8-13) got just four outs, allowing five runs in the first inning before loading the bases in the second.

      DODGERS 8, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Judge dropped Chase Utley's fly ball to the right-field warning track and catcher Gary Sanchez threw wildly to second base, leading to four unearned runs that helped NL West-leading Los Angeles beat the AL wild-card chasing Yankees.

Jose De Leon (2-0) won in his second big league start. Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner homered for the Dodgers.

Bryan Mitchell (1-1) gave up six runs - two earned - and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers previously had played just one day at Yankee Stadium since interleague action started in 1997, splitting a doubleheader in 2013.

      WHITE SOX 11, INDIANS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Avisail Garcia matched a career high with four hits, including a tiebreaking solo homer, and Chicago routed the AL Central leaders.

Todd Frazier hit his career-best 36th homer and Adam Eaton also went deep for the White Sox.

The Indians' division lead was trimmed to six games over Detroit.

Carlos Carrasco (11-8) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, hours after the Indians announced Danny Salazar could miss the rest of the season with a forearm injury.

Miguel Gonzalez (4-6) got the win.

      BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Tampa Bay and Toronto cleared the benches and bullpens after the final out. No punches were thrown.

Steven Souza Jr. hit a liner for the last out and traded words with Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin after a verbal misunderstanding.

Toronto is the top wild-card team in the AL, one game ahead of Baltimore.

Jason Grilli (5-3) pitched one inning and Roberto Osuna got his 32nd save. Ezequiel Carrera had a tiebreaking, pinch-hit homer in the eighth off Brad Boxberger (3-1).

      TIGERS 4, TWINS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler homered and Detroit scored two runs in the seventh inning on close plays at the plate.

The Tigers pulled within a game of Baltimore for the AL's second wild card.

Brian Dozier hit his 40th homer for Minnesota.

Shane Greene (4-4) won in relief. Francisco Rodriguez walked two in the ninth but held on for his 41st save in 45 chances.

Alex Wimmers (1-2) took the loss.

      ATHLETICS 16, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Khris Davis and Marcus Semien hit three-run homers as Oakland matched a season high with 17 hits while drawing 10 walks.

Kansas City remained four games behind for the second AL wild-card spot.

Daniel Coulombe (3-1) earned the win in relief.

Royals starter Dillon Gee (6-8) was battered for five runs on five hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.

      PADRES 4, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Paul Clemens fought through flu symptoms to combine with five relievers on a five-hit shutout as San Diego blanked San Francisco.

Hector Sanchez homered and singled twice against his former club. Yangervis Solarte drove in two runs while helping the Padres to their fourth consecutive win over the Giants.

San Francisco dropped four games behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West after trimming two games off the lead last weekend.

With 19 games left, however, the Giants still lead the race for the league's top wild card.

Clemens (3-5) pitched five smooth innings to help end San Francisco's three-game winning streak. The right-hander allowed three hits.

Sanchez connected off Jeff Samardzija (11-10).

      RANGERS 4, ASTROS 3, 12 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Rougned Odor had three hits and three RBIs, including a solo homer in the 12th inning that lifted Texas over Houston.

The Rangers, who have the best record in the American League at 86-59, improved to 14-3 against AL West rival Houston this season.

Odor launched his 31st homer off James Hoyt (1-1) in the 12th. Odor, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, has six home runs, six doubles and 19 RBIs in 16 games against the Astros this season.

Keone Kela (5-1) tossed two scoreless innings and Jake Diekman pitched a perfect 12th for his fourth save.

Evan Gattis hit a solo homer off Sam Dyson in the ninth to tie it at 3.

      MARINERS 8, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Leonys Martin went 4 for 4 with three doubles and three runs, and Robinson Cano homered to help Seattle beat Los Angeles for its sixth straight victory.

Cano went 3 for 5 with his 33rd home run. Ben Gamel added his first major league homer, a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

Ariel Miranda (4-1) shut out the Angels over six innings in his third straight win.

Ricky Nolasco (5-14) gave up four runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

      PHILLIES 6, PIRATES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roman Quinn had two hits, two RBIs, a stolen base and made a big impression in his second major league game, leading Philadelphia over Pittsburgh.

A day after he was promoted to the big leagues, Quinn hit second and played right field in his second straight start. Quinn, an accomplished base stealer and the Phillies' second-round draft pick in 2011, doubled in the second and sixth innings to help the Phillies snap a seven-game home losing streak.

Quinn's two-run double in the second one-hopped the wall as part of a five-run inning against Gerrit Cole (7-10), who allowed five runs in two innings in his first start off the disabled list.

Jeremy Hellickson (11-9) struck out six and allowed an unearned run over 6 1/3 innings.

      DIAMONDBACKS 12, ROCKIES 9

PHOENIX (AP) - Yasmany Tomas hit his first career grand slam, and Arizona came back from a three-run deficit after squandering a five-run lead to beat Colorado.

Tomas had four hits and five RBIs, including an opposite-field slam to right in the sixth inning off Jordan Lyles (4-5). Brandon Drury also had four of Arizona's 16 hits, including a solo homer in the seventh.

Tomas matched his career high for hits in a game. His 29 home runs lead the Diamondbacks.

Mitch Haniger hit his first major league home run in the Arizona seventh. Randall Delgado (4-1) got the win and Daniel Hudson earned his third save.

Daniel Descalso homered and drove in three runs, and Carlos Gonzalez doubled three times and added three RBIs for the Rockies. Colorado's 15 hits included four for Gonzalez and three for Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon.

      BRAVES 12, MARLINS 7

ATLANTA (AP) - Nick Markakis doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, Tyler Flowers had four RBIs and Atlanta outslugged Miami.

The teams combined for 34 hits. Atlanta, which ranks 28th in runs, finished in double digits for just the third time this year and the first time at Turner Field.

The Marlins erased a seven-run deficit in the sixth.

Chaz Roe (2-0) got the win. Brian Ellington (2-2) took the loss.

      REDS 3, BREWERS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Scott Schebler hit a two-run single in Cincinnati's three-run first inning and four pitchers teamed up on the Reds' eighth shutout of the season.

Keyvius Sampson started and Blake Wood (6-3), Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias followed as the Reds posted their seventh shutout since the All-Star break.

Iglesias pitched the final two innings for his third save in four opportunities as the Reds extended their winning streak to four games.

The Brewers, who had hit at least one home run in nine consecutive games, have lost three of their last four. Wily Peralta (6-10) allowed six hits and three runs with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings.

      • Tuesday’s six-pack

Six interesting games on this weekend’s football slate……..

        — Florida State (-2.5) @ Louisville– Big early game in the ACC.

        — Oregon @ Nebraska (-3)– Huskers’ coach Riley used to work at Oregon State, the Ducks’ arch-rival.

        — UCLA (-3) @ BYU– Cougars are already 2-0 against Pac-12.

        — Pitt @ Oklahoma State (-6.5)– Cowboys need to bounce back.

        — Ohio State (-2) @ Oklahoma– Sooners as a home dog?

        — Alabama (-10.5) @ Ole Miss– Big early game in SEC.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……….

        13) Steelers 38, Redskins 16– Washington had their chances to grab decent-sized lead in first half, but they failed in red zone, then messed up couple chances to get turnovers in Pitt territory. Steelers pulled away late as Big Ben dominated Redskin defense with his decision-making.

        12) 49ers 28, Rams 0– Never thought the A’s would score more than the Rams last night. Worst-case scenario for LA, just an awful effort here; they play Seattle and Arizona in next three weeks, so it ain’t gonna get any easier. Good debut for Chip Kelly with the 49ers.

        11) Oakland Raiders went for 2 points and the win at the end of their game Sunday, just like BYU did at Utah Saturday night; Raiders made it, BYU didn’t. Either way, I am adamant that this is a bad play, unless you have a great running QB. I’d much rather tie the game and keep playing.

        10) Arnold Palmer turned 87 last week; the most popular golfer ever. I have one good Arnold Palmer story……..

20 years ago I used to coach Little League in a wealthy suburb; questionable move on my part, but one year, I had an assistant coach who is an avid golfer. Smart guy, great job, but he didn’t like me much, didn’t like my coaching style (very laid back), so we didn’t talk much.

Near the end of the season, Arnold Palmer came into town for a charity event; my assistant was on the committee at his country club, so he wasn’t around for a couple days. The next time he was at practice after the event, I asked him how his day with Arnold Palmer was.

Now this was a very educated, smart guy who was rarely enthusiastic about much, at least around me; he looked at me, his eyes lit up and he said, “It was the greatest day of my life.”

That’s all you need to know about Arnold Palmer’s effect on people.

        9) Hey if you’re in the Miami area, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Miami Heat’s D-League team, is having a tryout on September 25 at a high school in the Miami area. Only costs $150 to try out. Of course, if you made the team, you get to spend the winter in North Dakota, not sure that’s a good deal or not. Probably not.

        8) Did you know they have fantasy camp for musicians? Saw a friend of mine post a picture on Facebook of his brother jamming with a guitarist who had been part of the Eagles. I guess if you have some musical talent, that would be a very cool thing to do.

        7) Arizona State 68, Texas Tech 55– Kid on ASU, Kalen Ballage, scored 8 touchdowns Saturday night!!!! Tremendous night for him, seven on the ground, one thru the air.

Steeler WR Antonio Brown’s dad Eddie was an Arena Football star here in Albany; he scored nine TDs in a game once– that was amazing to see, but to get eight in a college game, against a real opponent on a 100-yard field, that is very special.

        6) Speaking of Antonio Brown, USA Today ran an article recently where the title was “3 years ago he was a junkie. Now he’s Antonio Brown’s chef.” I’m sure the Steelers front office just loved that story.

        5) If someone asks you, the NHL team that has appeared in the most shootouts in one season? The 2013-14 Washington Caps (21).

        4) Golfer Dustin Johnson’s grandfather is in the U of South Carolina Hall of Fame as a basketball player.

        3) All three service academies are 2-0 in football this month; last time that happened was 1996.

        2) Can you imagine how bad the traffic jam was getting out of Bristol Motor Speedway after the Va Tech-Tennessee football game Saturday? 150,000 people leaving at once, of course, once they got to the highway, half went east, half went west, maybe that made the traffic a little better.

1– Miami Marlins have a strict no-beard policy, for some odd reason. Pitcher Andrew Cashner had a thick beard but had to shave it when the Padres traded him to the Fish. Cashner is a free agent after the season; he has pitched well since being traded to Miami, but has said he might not consider signing with them this winter because he wants to grow his beard back.

                      • Dodgers visit the Bronx
                        September 13, 2016

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (81-62) at NEW YORK YANKEES (76-67)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles -140, New York +130, Total: 8.5

The Yankees will be in a must-win situation when they host the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Los Angeles had lost two of its previous three games before defeating New York on Monday and the team will be hoping to get hot down the stretch. The Dodgers know the importance of entering the postseason with some momentum and this series in Yankee Stadium is a perfect chance to get some of their hitters going.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are falling behind in the Wild Card race after losing each of their past two games. They desperately need to win this game on Tuesday and will likely need to rattle off a five-game winning streak at some point down the stretch.

The starters in this Tuesday matchup are set to be LHP Julio Urias (5-2, 3.69 ERA, 76 K) for Los Angeles and LHP C.C. Sabathia (8-12, 4.27 ERA, 130 K) for New York. One trend that sticks out when looking at this game is that home underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher are 400-330 against the money line - with a starting pitcher who strikes out five or more batters per start, stranding 6.9 or less runners on base per game on the season - since 1997.

Julio Urias has been outstanding for Los Angeles recently, allowing three earned runs total over his past three starts. Urias has pitched 17.1 innings in that time, striking out 20 batters and walking just three. He’ll need to do his best to miss bats in this one, as he does throw hard and the Yankees might just make him pay if he makes any mistakes high in the zone. He has, however, allowed only one homer in his past 10 appearances and prides himself on his ability to keep the ball in the park.

Offensively, SS Corey Seager (.319, 25 HR, 69 RBI) is a player to watch in this game. Seager was 2-for-5 with an RBI on Monday and has now gotten two or more hits in six of his past nine games. He doesn’t hit lefties quite as well as he does righties (he’s hitting only .269 versus lefties), but should have no problem taking care of Sabathia’s off-speed stuff on Tuesday.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on OF Yasiel Puig (.265, 10 HR, 40 RBI) in this one. Puig has not been an everyday player since coming back up to the majors, but he does have three homers over his past six appearances. He is capable of providing a spark and should get a chance to play against the Yankees’ lefty on Tuesday.

The Yankees have lost two straight games and they could not have come at a worse time. New York can’t afford to lose this game on Tuesday and C.C. Sabathia is surely aware of that. The lefty has had an up-and-down season for the Yankees, but he does have experience in big games and this is a spot that New York should be comfortable having him in. Sabathia has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past four starts, but he did go only four innings against Tampa Bay in his most recent outing (Sep. 8). The Yankees will need him to work deeper into this game, as they can’t have too much pressure being put on their bullpen.

Offensively, the Yankees can use a big game from Gary Sanchez (.333, 13 HR, 24 RBI). Sanchez has been the catalyst for New York’s late playoff push and the team is counting on him on a nightly basis. He should be able to make an impact in this game, as he will be facing a lefty that throws a very hard fastball. If Urias gives him anything hittable then Sanchez will likely send it over the centerfield wall.

                        • LEADING OFF: Cubs close in, Big Papi ties The Mick
                          September 13, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          THEY CAN ALMOST TASTE IT

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs can keep closing in on the NL Central crown with a win over the rival Cardinals in St. Louis. Jason Hammel (14-8) starts for Chicago against lefty Jaime Garcia (10-12).

                          MICKEY & PAPI

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz hit his 536th home run Monday night, tying Yankees great Mickey Mantle for 17th on the career list. Ortiz connected for the AL East leaders against Baltimore. The series continues at Fenway Park when Drew Pomeranz and Boston take on Dylan Bundy and the contending Orioles.

                          READY TO RETURN?

Josh Donaldson could be back at third base for Toronto, a day after he was out of the lineup. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said the reigning AL MVP was ''banged up'' and needed a day to regroup. Donaldson is hitless in a career-worst seven games, going 0 for 23 with seven strikeouts in that span for the AL playoff contenders.

                          NOAH'S ARM

In a tight race with St. Louis and San Francisco for two NL wild cards, the Mets and their injury-plagued rotation could use a long outing from All-Star ace Noah Syndergaard (13-8) in Washington. Fill-in starter Rafael Montero lasted only 1 2/3 innings against the NL East leaders in the series opener Monday night. Syndergaard ranks second in the majors with a 2.48 ERA.

                          • Cubs give "Grandpa Rossy" grand send-off as career nears end
                            September 13, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) The most popular grandpa in Chicago these days just might be a 39-year-old with three young children who happens to play for the most dominant team in the majors.

Oh, and he does not actually have any grandkids.

Even so, David Ross might as well be a grandpa by baseball standards. And as his career winds down after 15 years, he's getting a grand send-off with the Chicago Cubs. While a long-suffering franchise eyes its first World Series championship since 1908, a lifelong backup catcher is being treated like a star on his way out the door.

''I was at dinner last night,'' Ross said. ''Somebody yelled across the restaurant, `Hey grandpa!' when I walked in. I'm like, `How we doing? How's it going?' A lot more attention. It's unique, different for me.''

Yes, it's quite a time to be ''Grandpa Rossy.''

''Grandpa Rossy?'' Well, that started in spring training.

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo were at dinner with Ross and some other players when the two young sluggers decided to have some fun and open an Instagram account documenting his final season.

Grandparossy-3 started with three pictures posted on Feb. 21 - of Ross posing at a sporting goods store with a Cubs shirt and mitt in one hand and pants, batting gloves and knee pads before his ''last first day''; of a black-and-white Ross baseball card from when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a nod to his age; and of the three of them at a Phoenix Suns game. The account has grown to one with 136,000, and the retirement tour spurred such a demand that the Cubs are selling Ross t-shirts at Wrigley Field for the first time since he joined the club before last season.

''It's his last year playing baseball,'' Bryant said. ''We wanted ... to make him feel really special, that we really care about him and are gonna miss him.''

Even better, they're having fun along the way.

The Instagram account became a vehicle for Ross to post pictures from the road and of his family and teammates. There are shots of him playing, working out and hanging with Rizzo in Las Vegas.

There are videos, too. One from spring training shows Ross in a ''G-PA ROSSY'' No. 3 jersey walking hunched over in the clubhouse using a bat like a cane as Rizzo and Bryant help him.

                            ''Almost there,'' Rizzo says.

''You can do it,'' Bryant chimes in.

In another, Ross and Rizzo perform an acoustic rendition of Vanilla Ice's ''Ice, Ice, Baby,'' with Ross on guitar and vocals and Rizzo on a conga drum.

The Cubs organization also jumped on the ''Grandpa Rossy'' phenomenon and produced a series of videos with Ross to generate All-Star votes for his teammates.

In one, Grandpa Rossy uses a rotary phone to implore fans to dial ''(hash)votecubs'' and call in their vote. In another, he encourages them to fax it.

Teammates also gave Ross a motorized scooter during spring training to help him get around.

''At first, we kind of felt bad calling him grandpa,'' Bryant acknowledged. ''He's like 38 years old. That's pretty young for a normal person. He's enjoyed it.''

It hasn't been all jokes and gag gifts. There have been sweet gestures, like this one compliments of Jason Heyward: Suite upgrades for Ross and his family on the road.

For Heyward, who signed with Chicago in the offseason, it was a way to thank someone who helped him when he was breaking into the majors with Atlanta six years ago. He learned quickly that Ross had a way with words, like that time the Braves were playing an exhibition game against the Mets before his rookie season.

Heyward took his turn in batting practice and went inside. Ross wanted to know why he wasn't shagging fly balls instead.

''If there's something that's not happening and needs to happen, he's the person to say something about it the right way,'' Heyward said. ''When he speaks, it's probably a good idea to listen because he's saying something that's gonna help you as an individual and he's definitely saying something that's gonna help the team.''

Jon Lester, who played with Ross in Boston, said, ''He knows how to push you the right way.''

That in part helps explain why the Cubs consider Ross, a career .229 hitter on his seventh team who has never played in more than 112 games and has logged more than 200 at-bats only two times, so important.

It goes beyond the raw numbers. He is a steady hand behind the plate and in the clubhouse, a player who won a championship with Boston in 2013 and is trying to help a team loaded with stars from Bryant and Rizzo to Jake Arrieta and Lester finally bring home a championship to Wrigley Field.

''I look back on what I bring and my skillset and how I got this much time in the major leagues, it blows my mind,'' Ross said. ''I try to appreciate that and not take that for granted.''

He is someone manager Joe Maddon saw as a perfect fit from the moment he found out. Maddon was driving around Tampa and pulled into a parking lot to call Ross.

''Fun, passionate, aggressively wanted to win, great teammate. All that stuff came through in that phone conversation,'' Maddon said.

Now, a career that started with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002 nears the end, Ross is soaking it all in and having some fun along the way. He started keeping a diary documenting the season in a leather notepad his wife gave him and now makes a few entries a month on his phone, instead, usually during flights.

''It's time to go home, it's time to be a family, it's time to start a different chapter in my life,'' Ross said. ''I love baseball, don't get me wrong. I love playing, I love competing, I love these guys. There's a perfect atmosphere here.''
