ST. LOUIS (AP) - Brandon Moss broke out of a lengthy slump with a tiebreaking home run and Aledmys Diaz connected in his return to the starting lineup, leading St. Louis over Chicago.

The Cardinals ensured that the runaway Cubs won't clinch the NL Central at Busch Stadium. Chicago's magic number is three, and the series in St. Louis wraps up Wednesday.

St. Louis remained a half-game behind the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot.

Moss began the day mired in a 1-for-41 skid. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jason Hammel (14-9).

Smyly (7-11) is 4-0 at Toronto.

    METS 4, NATIONALS 3, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - T.J. Rivera hit his first major league home run, connecting for the Mets in the 10th off Washington closer Mark Melancon.

New York has won eight of 10 and is a half-game ahead of St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

Rivera drove in three runs. His shot off Melancon (2-2) helped snap the Nationals' four-game winning streak.

Jeurys Familia (3-3) got the win despite allowing two runs in the ninth for his fourth blown save. Jerry Blevins struck out Daniel Murphy for the final out to earn his first save.

    TWINS 8, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jorge Polanco homered and drove in four runs and Brian Dozier added three more hits to his torrid second half for Minnesota.

Kyle Gibson (6-9) dominated, allowing one run and five hits in eight innings.

Matt Boyd (5-4) took the loss in his worst outing since June. He gave up seven runs, eight hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.

    PADRES 6, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ryan Schimpf hit a go-ahead three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning for the San Diego Padres as the Giants' bullpen gave up a lead and chance to gain ground on the division-leading Dodgers.

Hunter Strickland (3-3) started the ninth and allowed two runs, three singles and a bases-loaded walk to Wil Myers, then Steven Okert entered to try to get the final out. Schimpf clobbered the fourth offering and sent it into the center-field bleachers for his 19th homer.

    • Wednesday’s six-pack

Some thoughts on this week’s NFL card……..

      — Only three games this week between 1-0 teams: Chiefs-Texans, Packers-Vikings, Bengals-Steelers.

      — Jets @ Bills– Rex Ryan against his old team. Ryan Fitzpatrick started 53 games for Buffalo, most he has played for any of his many teams.

      — Cowboys @ Redskins– Guess Dez Bryant stays on left side of the field.

      — Seahawks @ Rams– Rams’ last home game in Coliseum was in 1979.

      — Packers @ Vikings– Minnesota’s new dome is christened.

      — Rookie QBs Wentz/Prescott each get their first road start, Wentz in Chicago Monday night, Prescott against the Redskins.

      Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…..

      13) Texas Rangers are 87-59, going to jog to the AL West title, but if you bet them in “1st 5 innings” bets, they’re 63-62-27- not so good.

Texas has been incredibly good in the last four innings of games. Texas is 33-10 in 1-run games; combined with last year’s 27-22, that makes manager Jeff Banister 60-32 in one-run games. That’s an extremely good record.

      12) How did NFL teams do on their first drive of the game this weekend?

8 TDs, 4 FGs for 32 teams on their first drive of the game; 4 TDs, 6 FG on their first drive of the third quarter.

Patriots, Cowboys, Packers, Buccaneers scored on their first drive of both halves.

      11) Underdogs covered all four divisional games this weekend; home dogs in non-divisional games were 3-2, road underdogs 4-3.

      10) Robert Griffin III has a broken bone in his shoulder; Cleveland will start 37-year old Josh McCown this week against the Ravens. he is 2-17 as a starting QB the last two years, for the Bucs/Browns.

      9) it is ironical that RGIII got hurt as the Browns were losing to an Eagles team led by rookie Carson Wentz, since Philly traded for Cleveland’s first round pick so they could grab a franchise QB (Wentz). Now the Browns can use the Eagles’ first round pick next year to grab their own franchise QB– the draft next April is in Philadelphia, of all places.

      8) Former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino is still coaching basketball; he coaches the Keiser University Seahawks, an NAIA team in West Palm Beach- they were 30-5 last year.

Coach Massimino will be 82 in November; he led the Wildcats to the 1985 national title, the last college game without the shot clock.

      7) Apparently there was a Ryan Braun/Yasiel Puig trade on the table, which team do you think said no to the trade? Me personally, I’d never take Puig- from what I read, he doesn’t like baseball that much. He is just so good at it he still made the major leagues.

      6) Wally Backman quit as manager of the Mets’ AAA team in Las Vegas. Backman is 57, a good manager but has never gotten a shot at the big leagues– he had some off-field problems which prevented him getting hired by the Diamondbacks in 2004. Hopefully he will get his chance.

      5) A family in Las Vegas gave UNLV $10M towards the building of an indoor practice facility for football. From UNLV’s website:

“The Fertitta Football Complex will become the day-to-day home of the program and include an academic center, locker rooms, offices, meeting rooms, strength/conditioning center, media room, training table and nutrition bar, athletic training center and player lounge.”

Facilities are crucial in recruiting; this should help the Rebels a lot.

      4) Tweet of the Day from ESPN’s Louis Riddick, with regards to Josh Norman only covering Antonio Brown on one side of the field Monday:

“It’s possible to have a corner travel/match/whatever you want to call it, and play man OR zone. It just requires some teaching. Just sayin’.”

Redskins play Dallas Sunday, so all Cowboys have to do is keep Dez Bryant on the other side of the field and Norman will never cover him? Oy.

      3) Oklahoma Sooners are a home underdog against Ohio State this week; last time they got points at home was back in 2000 against Nebraska (+2). Sooners won that game 31-14.

      2) Sometimes we don’t know how good we had it: When I was a teenager, the Rams hired an unknown coach named Chuck Knox. From 1973-78, under the conservative-but-successful Knox, the Rams went 54-15-1, won the NFC West all five years, but went 3-5 in the playoffs and then…….the owner fired Knox for his playoff failures.

Funny thing is, they were much worse that next year without Knox, but the NFC West stunk, the Rams won it at 9-7 (they were 4-5 at one point) and made it to their first Super Bowl. Life is weird sometimes.

1– Rams got shut out Monday night, first team to get shut out in Week 1 since…….the ’09 Rams. Excuse me now while I go puke.

            • LEADING OFF: Kershaw makes 1st start at Yankee Stadium
              September 14, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

              FIRST-TIMER

Clayton Kershaw has three Cy Young Awards, an MVP trophy and a no-hitter on his resume. But he's never pitched at Yankee Stadium - until now. The ace left-hander is scheduled to start for the Dodgers against New York in a late-afternoon series finale, his second outing since missing more than two months with a back injury. Kershaw (11-3, 1.89 ERA) threw 66 pitches over three innings last Friday in a 4-1 loss at Miami, but manager Dave Roberts wouldn't say how many Kershaw might throw this time. ''It'll be more than his last start,'' Roberts said. ''We expect Clayton to be Clayton.'' Kershaw has faced the Yankees twice at Dodger Stadium, allowing two earned runs over 15 innings (1.20 ERA) in a pair of no-decisions - the last in July 2013.

              TOP WINNER

Rick Porcello (20-3) aims to add to his major league-high victory total when AL East-leading Boston faces Kevin Gausman and Baltimore at Fenway Park.

              ALMOST SET

Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson has been out of the starting lineup for two games because of a sore right hip. The reigning AL MVP, stuck in a career-worst seven-game hitless streak, could play in the series finale vs. visiting Tampa Bay.

              ACES

Cubs lefty Jon Lester (16-4, 2.51 ERA) closes out the series at Busch Stadium when the NL Central leaders take on the wild card-contending Cardinals and righty Carlos Martinez (14-7, 3.05).

              REMEMBER ME?

Former Royals prospect Sean Manaea starts at Kauffman Stadium against Yordano Ventura as Kansas City tries to make up ground in the AL wild-card race. Manaea was traded to the A's in July 2015 as part of the deal for Ben Zobrist.

Hottest team: Mariners (7-0 last seven)

It’s hard to find a team that has gone through more ups and downs this season than Seattle. The Mariners were on a 2-10 run from late August through the start of September as they look buried in the AL Wild Card race. However, Seattle has turned it around of late by winning seven straight, while allowing three runs or fewer in all seven victories. The M’s go for the sweep of the Angels tonight trying to wrap up their six-game road swing unbeaten before a crucial homestand with the Blue Jays and Astros. Hisashi Iwakuma takes the mound for Seattle tonight, as the right-hander owns a 1-4 record in his last five starts, which includes a pair of losses to the Angels in this span.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (3-8 last 11)

One of the teams that Seattle is chasing in the Wild Card race is going backwards at the wrong time. Toronto is still the top Wild Card squad heading into today’s action, but the Jays haven’t won back-to-back games this month, while losing three straight series. The Jays and Rays have split the first two games of their series at Rogers Center, but Toronto fell short in a 6-2 defeat on Tuesday as it tries to avoid its fourth home series loss since the All-Star break. Marco Estrada has been knocked around the last two starts for Toronto, allowing 13 hits and nine runs (eight earned), while dropping his past two starts against Tampa Bay.

Hottest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (20-3, 3.21 ERA)

There are probably at least 10 or 15 pitchers in baseball that most people would say who would reach 20 wins faster than Porcello. He’s the first to accomplish that feat this season, coming off a dominating effort in a 13-3 rout of Toronto, his ninth straight start in which he has tossed at least seven innings. Now, Porcello returns to Fenway Park tonight against Baltimore where he looks to remain perfect on the season, owning an incredible 13-0 record (14-0 team mark), while 12 of those wins have come by two runs or more. Porcello has faced the Orioles only once this season, giving up five earned runs in six innings of a 12-7 defeat at Camden Yards in June.

Coldest pitcher: Josh Tomlin, Indians (11-8, 4.85 ERA)

Tomlin began the season on fire by winning seven of his first eight decisions, but hasn’t smelled that kind of success in months. The Cleveland right-hander is winless in his six decisions since the start of August, while the Indians are 1-5 in that stretch. Pitching away from Progressive Field has been a nightmare for Tomlin, allowing seven earned runs in each of his last three road starts against the Rangers, Nationals, and Yankees, all Cleveland losses. Tomlin beat the White Sox in his only start against them this season back in May, as the Indians have given up 19 runs the last two days in losses at Chicago.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (6-1 last seven)

St. Louis begins Wednesday’s action sitting one half-game outside of the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Cardinals rallied past the Cubs last night, 4-2, as the Redbirds have played plenty of low-scoring games of late since allowing 12 runs to Milwaukee last Thursday. St. Louis pitching has yielded two runs or less in three of the past four games, while the Cards are currently on a 7-2 UNDER run in their previous nine contests at Busch Stadium. Carlos Martinez opposes Jon Lester this afternoon in the series finale with a 7 ½ total, as the Cards have gone OVER the total in two of Martinez’s three starts against Chicago this season.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (10-2 last 12)

Atlanta’s offense was pretty dreadful to begin the season, but the Braves have showed some pop recently in spite of sitting in last place of the NL East. The Braves’ pitching is also contributing many OVERS lately, allowing at least five runs in seven of the past eight games, including seven runs in each of the previous two contests against Miami. There shouldn’t be many runs put up tonight at Turner Field as each team sends out their aces with Jose Fernandez and Julio Teheran taking the mound. However, Teheran has cashed the OVER in four straight home starts, while going OVER the total in two starts against Miami this season.

Matchup to watch: Rangers vs. Astros

It is amazing how one team has dominated the other this season and nowhere has it been more evident than in the Lone Star State. Texas owns an incredible 15-3 record against Houston, including a pair of one-run triumphs the last two nights at Minute Maid Park. The Rangers rallied off the Astros’ bullpen for a pair of ninth inning runs in Tuesday’s 4-3 stunner at Houston, the eighth time Texas has beaten Houston this season by one run.

Derek Holland takes Yu Darvish’s spot in the rotation tonight for Texas, as the southpaw is winless in his last two road starts. Holland beat the Astros as a home underdog on September 3 in a 12-4 blowout, scattering six hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Joe Musgrove counters for Houston, as the rookie was knocked around in that eight-run defeat earlier this month, giving up five earned runs in less than five innings of work. Musgrove is winless in two starts against Texas this season, as the Astros are 2-5 in his seven starts.

Betcha didn’t know: To begin August, the Phillies captured five of six games from the Giants and Rockies at home. Since then, Philadelphia has fallen flat at Citizens Bank Park by losing 11 of its past 14 home contests, including Tuesday’s 5-3 defeat to Pittsburgh. In eight of those losses, the Phillies have scored three runs or less, while facing a Pirates’ squad that is riding a 10-5 record in their past 15 road contests.

Biggest public favorite: Giants (-265) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Rockies (+130) at Diamondbacks

Biggest line move: Phillies (+120 to +110) vs. Pirates

                            • Rangers' Beltre belts 425-foot homer from one knee
                              September 13, 2016

HOUSTON (AP) From one knee, Adrian Beltre cleared the Crawford Boxes.

The Rangers slugger dropped down to get to Brad Peacock's pitch and crushed his 30th home run of the season from a kneel Tuesday night, giving Texas a 1-0 lead over the Houston Astros in the second inning.

MLB.com's Statcast estimated the homer would have traveled 425 feet if it didn't clank off the wall beyond the seats above the left-field wall.

This wasn't Beltre's first homer from one knee, including when he dirtied his pant leg while homering in Game 5 of the 2011 World Series.

It was the 443rd homer of Beltre's career, and this is his fifth season with 30 or more homers.
