                    • Clemson faces Georgia Tech "trap" game
                      September 21, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) With an ACC showdown looming, Clemson is still lacking the sort of performance that would show it's capable of making another run at the national championship.

The No. 5 Tigers get a chance to sharpen their credentials when they take on unbeaten Georgia Tech in a prime-time game Thursday.

This would be a good time for Clemson (3-0) to step up its game, facing a team it hasn't beaten on the road since 2003 and with an even bigger contest coming up on the first day of October against third-ranked Louisville.

''All I know is we've been treating every game as if it was the national championship,'' running back Wayne Gallman said.

It sure hasn't looked that way.

Clemson went down to the final play at Auburn before holding on for a 19-13 victory, and the Tigers had a surprisingly tough time in a 30-24 win over Troy. Last week, they blew out lower-division and South Carolina State 59-0 in what looked more like a scrimmage.

Georgia Tech (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) has yet to face a team of Clemson's caliber, but the Yellow Jackets should get a boost of confidence from their success at Bobby Dodd Stadium. They've won five straight over the Tigers in Atlanta, including a 28-6 victory two years ago when quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a knee injury.

''We haven't won down there in a while,'' Gallman said. ''It's time to change that.''

Watson, who grew up in the sprawling suburbs north of Atlanta, bounced back from his injury to become one of college football's most dynamic players last season, leading Clemson to 14 straight wins before a heartbreaking 45-40 loss to Alabama in the national championship games.

Then there's Georgia Tech, which struggled to a 3-9 mark a year ago.

The Yellow Jackets are eager to show they've turned things around. A victory over one of the nation's top teams would certainly accomplish that.

''I look at this as a great opportunity,'' coach Paul Johnson said. ''If we play as hard as we can and execute, we'll be in the game. We can play with them. We've played with them before.''

                      ---

Some other things to watch for when Clemson takes on Georgia Tech:

                      FAST VS. SLOW:
Clemson runs a hurry-up scheme that is designed to keep defenses off balance and get as many plays as possible for an offense with a plethora of dynamic weapons. The Tigers are averaging about 80 plays per game - nearly 20 more than Georgia Tech's run-oriented scheme. The Yellow Jackets will do their best to slow the game to a crawl. ''The offense needs to be able to run the ball consistently, control the clock and keep them off the field,'' Johnson said.

NEW QUARTERBACK? If Clemson shuts down Georgia Tech's triple-option offense, give credit to Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables - and not just because of what he does on game day. Venables likes running the scout team and acting the part of Yellow Jackets quarterback Justin Thomas, no easy task given the uniqueness of the triple-option offense. Linebacker Ben Boulware said seeing Venables on the opposite side of the line usually means a couple of hard shoves. ''I think he likes when we do that,'' Boulware said.

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Georgia Tech has struggled to sell out 55,000-seat Bobby Dodd Stadium, which often diminishes the team's home-field advantage. But the place comes alive under the lights, creating the sort of atmosphere that has produced some of the Yellow Jackets' most memorable performances. None more so than last year's stunning 22-16 upset of Florida State, which was Tech's lone ACC win.

HANDS ON THE BALL: Clemson will be without clutch receiver Hunter Renfrow, who had TD catches in the first two games. He is out for about a month with a broken hand. The receiving corps played well last Saturday, but there were eight drops the previous week against Troy. The Tigers can't afford that sort of sloppy play.

                      BAD MEMORIES:
Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott has his share of memories, good and bad, at Georgia Tech. He caught a 9-yard TD pass from Charlie Whitehurst in 2003 to put Clemson ahead 10-0 in a game it would go on to win 39-3 - its last victory against the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Don't mention the 2001 game, though, even though it was also a Clemson win. Elliott went down with a broken wrist covering the opening kickoff.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NCAAF Game of the Day: Clemson at Georgia Tech
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clemson has won 18-consecutive regular season games, but are just 8-10 ATS in those games.

No. 3 Clemson Tigers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+9.5, 58)

Third-ranked Clemson survived two weeks of underachieving before returning to its dominant ways last week, and the Tigers can’t afford another subpar effort when they travel to Georgia Tech for an ACC showdown Thursday night. The Tigers put their 18-game regular-season winning streak on the line as they aim for their first victory at Georgia Tech since 2003.

No coach relishes a short week – Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson lamented the lost days of preparation – but it could be especially tough on the Tigers as they prepare to face the Yellow Jackets’ option attack. “It’s a difficult turnaround for us – and them. It’s hard for both teams to get ready really in three days,” Swinney told reporters. “Georgia Tech is always an incredibly difficult team to prepare for, but even more so when you’ve got a short week to get ready.” Clemson rolled up 537 total yards in a 43-24 home victory over Georgia Tech a year ago, a game the Yellow Jackets would like to forget. “We don’t talk about last year, other than the fact that they beat the fool out of us,” Johnson told reporters. “We just have to play better. I think we’re a little better than we were a year ago. We’ll see if they’re better or the same.”

                        TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: Clemson opened this game as double digit road faves at -10, but early action came in on Georgia Tech, moving the line to Clemson -8.5. Since then the line has bounced back to the Tigers, sitting currently at Clemson -9.5.

Meanwhile, the total opened at 57 and has been bet up one point to sit at the current number of 58. Check out the complete line history here.

                        INJURY REPORT:

Clemson - DE A. Bryant (questionable Thursday, foot), LB B. Boulware (questionable Thursday, ankle), CB A. Baker (questionable Thursday, knee), DB B. Dawkins (questionable Thursday, knee), OL C. Reeves (questionable Thursday, knee), WR H. Renfrow (out Thursday, hand).

Georgia Tech - DL J. Woods (questionable Thursday, upper body), OL T. Klock (questionable Thursday, ankle), OL J. Stickler (questionable Thursday, undisclosed).

                        WEATHER REPORT:
Weather shouldn't be much of a factor for this ACC showdown. The forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies, with a very slight 12 percent chane of rain and a five to six mile per hour wind blowing across the field from east to west.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney will have his hands full trying to keep his Tigers focused on Georgia Tech Thursday night with a showdown with Louisville on tap next week. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets hope to improve on a dismal 1-3 SU and ATS record in their last four games in this series. Swinney will remind his team that Clemson’s last road loss was here in a 28-6 defeat in 2014."

ABOUT CLEMSON (3-0, 1-2 ATS, 0-3 O/U): After squeaking out six-point wins in their first two games, the Tigers routed South Carolina State 59-0 last week and put up predictably impressive numbers in the process, outgaining the Bulldogs 555-102. Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Deshaun Watson (692 passing yards, seven touchdowns, three interceptions) hasn’t done much damage on the ground thus far, and running back Wayne Gallman (197 rushing yards, two TDs) has managed 74 yards over the past two games after rushing for 123 in the opener against Auburn. Clemson’s defense has picked up where it left off last year and ranks eighth nationally in total defense (250 yards per game) and 11th in scoring defense (12.3 points per game).

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (3-0, 1-0-1 ATS, 0-1-1 O/U): Following a defensive struggle in a 17-14 victory over Boston College to open the season, the Yellow Jackets’ option attack has been in high gear the past two games, rolling up 955 yards in lopsided wins over Mercer and Vanderbilt. Quarterback Justin Thomas (169 rushing yards, one touchdown; 335 passing yards, one TD) is the catalyst for the offense, though running back Dedrick Mills (126 yards, four TDs) also has done some damage and Clinton Lynch (116 yards on nine carries) is a big-play threat. The Yellow Jackets have allowed 305 total yards per game but have been a bend-don’t-break unit, giving up only 10.3 points per game – seventh-fewest in the nation.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Home team is 6-0 ATS in their last six meetings.
                        * Georgia Tech is 1-7 ATS in its last eight games versus a team with a winning record.
                        * Under is 5-0 in Clemson's last five games in September.
                        * Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings at Georgia Tech.

CONSENSUS: Bettors are laying the chalk in this ACC matchup, with 62 percent of wagers on Clemson. When it comes to the total, 59 percent of wagers are on the Over.

NEW YORK (AP) Jose Reyes hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run drive in an 11th-inning comeback to lift the New York Mets to a dramatic 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night that kept them tied for the NL wild-card lead.

New York trailed 6-4 when pinch-hitter Brandon Nimmo singled off Jeanmar Gomez leading off the ninth and Reyes homered to right with one out.

Philadelphia went ahead 8-6 in the 11th when A.J. Ellis hit an RBI single off Jeurys Familia and Jim Henderson (2-2) walked Maikel Franco with the bases loaded.

Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto walked against Edubray Ramos (1-3) with one out in the bottom half, Reyes singled and Cabrera, who has been playing on an injured knee, homered to right, setting off a wild celebration. The Mets had been 0-63 this year when trailing after eight innings.

New York, which stopped a three-game skid, is tied with San Francisco for the NL wild-card lead.

                              INDIANS 5, ROYALS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana's three-run homer pushed Cleveland over Kansas City and nearer to its first AL Central championship since 2007.

Santana's shot in the sixth inning off Dillon Gee (7-9) snapped a 2-2 tie as the Indians lowered their magic number to three and improved to 9-1 against the Royals this season.

Kansas City's chances of making the postseason took another blow. The defending World Series champions began the night behind six teams in the wild-card chase.

Reliever Dan Otero (5-1) pitched two scoreless innings, Bryan Shaw worked one and Cody Allen pitched a perfect ninth for his 29th save.

Jason Kipnis homered for the Indians, who can wrap up a postseason berth this weekend against the Chicago White Sox.

                              TIGERS 4, TWINS 2, GAME 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Justin Verlander tied a season-high with 11 strikeouts and Detroit moved into the second AL wild-card spot by beating Minnesota to sweep a day-night doubleheader.

Erick Aybar drove in two runs for Detroit, which moved a half-game ahead of Baltimore for the second wild card and trails Toronto by one game. The Tigers went 9-0 at Minnesota this year.

Ervin Santana (7-11) gave up four runs - two earned - five hits and four walks in in six innings.

Verlander (15-8) allowed four hits in six innings, including home runs by Juan Centeno and Byron Buxton. He has won 12 of his last 13 starts against the Twins.

In the first game, Anibal Sanchez allowed one run and two hits in five innings in a spot start, and Alex Wilson (4-0), Shane Green and Mark Lowe finished the five-hitter.

                              DODGERS 7, ROCKIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasmani Grandal homered twice, including a grand slam in the seventh inning, to rally Los Angeles past Colorado.

The victory reduced the Dodgers' magic number for clinching their record fourth consecutive NL West title to four. Their division lead remained at six games after San Francisco beat San Diego 2-1.

Luis Avilan (3-0) got the win in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.

Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 46th save in 52 chances.

Jordan Lyles gave up a ground-rule, pinch-hit double to Andre Ethier to open the seventh. Boone Logan (2-4) took over and loaded the bases on two consecutive one-out walks. He then walked Adrian Gonzalez, forcing in a run and leaving the Dodgers trailing 4-3.

Grandal followed with his second career grand slam, sending a 2-2 pitch into center field and giving the Dodgers their first lead of the game, 7-4.

                              GIANTS 2, PADRES 1

The Mets and Giants took a half-game lead over the idle St. Louis Cardinals in the wild card race.

Samardzija (12-10) allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings, and walked none.

Joe Panik, who had been in an 0-for-24 slump, doubled to right-center opening the eighth against Christian Friedrich (5-11).

Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his second save in two chances.

                              RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - David Price won his eighth straight decision, Hanley Ramirez homered and Boston completed a four-game sweep of sinking Baltimore.

Boston has won eight straight to open a 5 1/2-game lead over idle Toronto in the AL East. With 13 victories in their last 16 games, the Red Sox have moved within one game of Texas for best record in the AL.

Baltimore fell seven games out and dropped 1+ games behind the Blue Jays for the top AL wild card. It was the first time since 2002 that the Orioles were swept at home by Boston in a four-game series.

Price (17-8) gave up three runs and six hits in seven inning, walking two and striking out five. The Red Sox have won each of the left-hander's last nine starts since Aug. 7.

Koji Uehara worked the eighth, and Craig Kimbrel got three straight outs for his 29th save in 31 chances.

Boston used a walk, a wild pitch and Andrew Benintendi's two-out RBI single off Vance Worley (2-2) to move in front in the fifth.

Nolasco (7-14) gave up five hits - all singles - and struck out five. Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Mike Fiers (11-8) allowed two runs on four hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

                              RAYS 2, YANKEES 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell and Tampa Bay's bullpen combined to strand 11 runners in a win that prevented a much-needed three-game sweep by New York.

The Yankees are three games behind Detroit for the second AL wild-card spot and also trail Baltimore, Houston and Seattle.

Snell (6-8) gave up five hits and three walks. New York had scoring threats in four of five innings against him, leaving the bases loaded in the third when Chase Headley flied out.

Chase Whitley, in his third game since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowed two hits in 2 2/3 innings, and Alex Colome finished for his 35th save in 37 chances.

Corey Dickerson hit a solo homer in the sixth off Luis Cessa (4-3).

                              PIRATES 3, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Chris Carter hit his 37th home run, matching his career high and Scooter Gennett sliced an opposite-field, two-run homer to help Milwaukee avoid another sweep at Miller Park.

Chase Anderson (9-11) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings, including a fifth-inning home run by Francisco Cervelli, his first since last Sept. 30. He improved to 3-1 in five starts this season against the Pirates, who had won their prior six games at Milwaukee.

Tyler Thornburg pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 17 chances.

                              BRAVES 6, MARLINS 3

                              • Friday’s six-pack

More NFL trends to ponder for this week’s games………

                                — Oakland covered seven of its last nine road games.

                                — Green Bay is 7-1-1 in last nine home openers.

                                — Broncos are 7-16 as a non-divisional road underdog.

                                — Jets are 6-1-1 vs spread in their last eight games.

                                — Arizona is 8-3 in its last 11 games as a road favorite.

                                — San Diego is 7-2 in last nine games as a road underdog.

Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend………

                                13) This week, Cleveland Browns are starting their third different QB this season.

                                In Week 3.

Miami Dolphins have an awful spread record at home but they’re dropping way down in class this week, after playing Seahawks/Patriots. Then again, we talked yesterday about how well young QBs have been faring this year. Tough game to figure.

                                12) USC changed QBs this week, went to a freshman for its game at Utah. A 1-3 start wouldn’t go over too well with the home folks- this will be a tough spot for the young quarterback.

                                11) Arizona Cardinals covered their road opener the last eight years, which goes back farther than the Bruce Arians era. Buffalo fired their OC last week after a 37-31 loss, so I can’t wait to see how different their offense is this week.

                                10) Tennessee has lost 11 games in a row to Florida; they had Gators beat LY, but coach Jones messed up the game with horrid clock management. Dobbs is a senior QB; Florida is starting a backup who couldn’t win the starting job at Purdue– this is a must-win game for the Volunteers.

                                9) Got a lot of grief on Twitter when I complained in Week 1 about Josh Norman not shadowing Antonio Brown all over the field. Got comments like “Easier said than done” or “the corner on the other side is capable”

Guess what? Redskins visit Swamp Stadium Sunday and Norman is going to shadow Odell Beckham; someone else on Twitter pointed out “it (shadowing) can be done. Just have to do some coaching.”

Apparently Washington’s defensive staff did some coaching this week.

                                8) James Franklin is 1-3 as a double digit underdog at Penn State; we know the guy can coach- he got Vanderbilt to bowl games, but if you’re the coach at Penn State, being an 18-point underdog is no bueno.

                                7) Steelers are 0-8 in their last eight visits to Philly; their last win in Philly came at Franklin Field, in 1965. Carson Wentz is about two weeks from being inducted in Canton, but he better learn how to slide. Eagles are 0-8 in last eight tries as a home underdog.

                                6) Alabama is a 44-point favorite over Kent State; will Nick Saban take it easy on his alma mater? I’m guessing Saban would go all-out playing volleyball at a family picnic. Doubtful there will be mercy here; Kent State’s reward will be when the guarantee check from Bama clears.

                                5) John Pagano is San Diego’s DC; Chuck Pagano is the Colts’ HC. They have a family reunion this week. Chargers led 24-3 at Arrowhead, blew the lead, then pounded the Jaguars at home last week. Nothing the Colts have done so far is impressive.

                                4) Cal Golden Bears won 50-43 last week, lost 45-40 the week before; they’re must-watch TV. Cal visits Arizona State this week; ASU beat Texas Tech 68-55 couple weeks ago. Do these teams even recruit defenders?

                                3) Will the Rams ever score a touchdown? They just played two division games, play Arizona next week; this is a trap game against Bucs squad playing its home opener.

                                2) Florida State lost 63-20 last week; that just doesn’t happen to the Seminoles, who had to be humbled, stunned. FSU visits an improved South Florida team this week; very curious to see how Florida State plays- they completed only 8-24 passes last week.

1– Vin Scully broadcasts his last game at Dodger Stadium Sunday; the guy has worked Dodger games for 67 freakin’ years, before my parents met and they were married in 1955.

Mr Scully is and always will be the greatest baseball announcer ever.
