          • LEADING OFF: Kluber makes Cy case, Red Sox seek 7th straight
            September 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

            KLUBER'S CASE

Indians ace Corey Kluber (17-9, 3.12 ERA) looks to strengthen his Cy Young Award resume against Kansas City. The 2014 winner has a sizable lead among AL pitchers with 6.4 wins above replacement, per Baseball-Reference . Rick Porcello and Chris Sale present some of the stiffest competition, but Kluber has Cleveland closing in on its first AL Central title since 2007.

            STILL DOING IT

David Ortiz and the AL East-leading Red Sox seek their seventh consecutive victory when they continue an important series in Baltimore. Big Papi is a big reason why Boston is 11-3 in its last 14 games and a major league-best 13-5 in September. Playing his final season, the 40-year-old Ortiz broke open a tight game Tuesday night with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. He has 36 home runs and 121 RBIs.

            NEED SOME MOORE

The last time San Francisco lefty Matt Moore faced the Dodgers, he lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning on Corey Seager's single. The trade-deadline acquisition can give the struggling Giants a lift when they wrap a pivotal series in Los Angeles. Dodgers rookie Kenta Maeda (15-9) gets his third start against the Giants after winning his first two.

And there's this treat, too: Vin Scully's call from the local Dodgers broadcast will be used for the fourth inning during the national telecast on ESPN. In his 67th season with the Dodgers, the 88-year-old Scully will broadcast his final game Oct. 2.

            TIRED ARMS?

Felix Hernandez (11-6, 3.79 ERA) and the Mariners take their playoff pursuit into a series finale against Toronto. Seattle's veteran ace is limping to the finish this season, posting a 7.65 ERA over his previous four starts. Blue Jays youngster Aaron Sanchez (13-2, 3.17) has likewise struggled recently with a 5.08 ERA in six starts since the beginning of August.

            WASTED WORKHORSE

The White Sox hope to capitalize if they get another long outing from Chris Sale (16-8, 3.03). He has pitched eight innings or more in six consecutive starts and struck out at least 10 in half of those. Despite that, Chicago is 2-4 in those games and 3-9 in Sale's last 12 assignments. The left-hander gets a favorable matchup against Philadelphia, batting just .243 with a .652 OPS versus southpaws this season.

            BABY BIRD

The Cardinals continue their push for an NL wild card with rookie Luke Weaver (1-3, 3.21 ERA) on the mound in Colorado. Weaver allowed six unearned runs in an abrupt outing last time out against San Francisco, though he has held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six of his seven starts.

            A BEGINNING AND THE END

Trying to jump over five teams in the crowded AL wild-card race, the Yankees hope to get center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury back from a bruised right knee. They hope for more power from rookie slugger Gary Sanchez and retiring star Mark Teixeira, too. Both homered Tuesday night in a win over Tampa Bay. That gave Sanchez 17 homers in 42 games this season, and Teixeira's 407th career home run tied Duke Snider for 54th place in major league history.

            • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
              September 21, 2016

Hottest team: Red Sox (8-2 last 10)

Boston has separated itself from Baltimore in the AL East standings after grabbing the first two games of their series at Camden Yards. The Red Sox have won the first two contests by exact 5-2 scores, as David Ortiz blasted a huge three-run homer in the seventh inning on Tuesday to help Boston improve to 6-2 at Camden Yards this season. Boston owns a four-game cushion over Toronto in the AL East, while Baltimore sits five games out of first place. The Red Sox have won all three of Clay Buchholz’s September starts, as the right-hander takes the mound tonight opposite Baltimore’s Ubaldo Jimenez.

Coldest team: White Sox (2-5 last seven)

Remember when Chicago began the season on fire at 23-10? Since that scorching start, the Sox own a dreadful 49-69 record, including dropping four straight games on their current road trip. Chicago’s late rally fell short in Tuesday’s 7-6 setback at Philadelphia as White Sox pitching has allowed 25 runs in the past three losses. Ace Chris Sale hopes to stop the bleeding for Chicago, coming off a complete-game victory at Kansas City his last time out, as the Sox own a 3-9 record in the southpaw’s past 12 starts.

Hottest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (13-4, 2.97 ERA)

New York snapped a five-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 5-2 triumph at Tampa Bay, erasing an early 2-0 deficit to improve to 6-2 in the past eight matchups against the Rays. Tanaka has allowed two earned runs or less in six consecutive outings, including giving up four hits and one earned run in seven innings against the Red Sox his last time out. However, the Yankees couldn’t hold on to a late 5-1 lead in a shocking 7-5 defeat at Fenway Park. New York has won all four of Tanaka’s starts against Tampa Bay this season, including tossing seven scoreless innings in a 4-1 triumph at Tropicana Field in May.

Coldest pitcher: Tom Koehler, Marlins (9-11, 3.96 ERA)

Miami has managed to hold off Washington in a pair of one-run victories at Marlins Park, but the task will be tougher tonight. Not only do the Marlins face Max Scherzer, but they send out Koehler, who is winless in his last five trips to the mound. Two of the five losses came in walk-off fashion, but the right-hander didn’t last past the fifth inning three times in this stretch. Koehler hasn’t faced Washington since May, as the Marlins are 1-2 in his three starts against the Nationals this season in spite of him giving up four earned runs in 17 innings of work.

              Biggest UNDER run
              : Angels (7-1 last eight)

Los Angeles has dropped a pair of heartbreakers to Texas the last two nights, losing each game by one run apiece. The Angels have allowed nine runs in the past four games to the Rangers and Blue Jays, two of the tougher lineups in baseball, which included giving up one run in the final two games last weekend against Toronto. Jered Weaver isn’t the pitcher he was back in 2012 when he won 20 games, but the Angels’ right-hander has performed well of late by allowing two earned runs or less in four of his past five starts, while finishing UNDER the total in seven of his previous eight trips to the mound.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (8-1 last nine)

Atlanta waited long enough to finally play well, posting a winning record so far in September after picking up four straight victories. The Braves have scored at least five runs in each of their past four games, while putting up 12 runs so far in their first two victories against the Mets. Five of the previous six matchups with the Mets have sailed OVER the total, but that streak could come to an end tonight. The Mets send out Bartolo Colon to the mound, who has registered four consecutive UNDERS, including posting three UNDERS against the Braves this season.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Dodgers

San Francisco and Los Angeles have exchanged low-scoring victories in the first two games at Chavez Ravine. The Giants managed not to blow another save in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory, as San Francisco forged into a three-way tie atop the NL Wild Card standings alongside St. Louis and New York. Three of the last four meetings between these division rivals have seen the losing team getting shut out, while eight of the previous 10 matchups have finished UNDER the total.

The last time Matt Moore faced the Dodgers in August at Chavez Ravine, the San Francisco southpaw came within one out of tossing a no-hitter. Moore settled for a 4-0 victory as the Giants avoided a three-game sweep, while the left-hander struck out seven batters. The Giants have fared well when Moore takes the mound, owning a 4-1 record in his past five starts. Meanwhile, the Dodgers own a 5-1 mark in Kenta Maeda’s previous six home starts, while the right-hander has beaten the Giants twice at home this season.

Betcha didn’t know: The Padres haven’t finished off home series well this season, posting a 3-7 record in their last 10 finales at Petco Park. San Diego has pulled off one home sweep this season, coming against San Francisco right after the All-Star break as the Padres are 1-5 this season in position to grab a home sweep. Tonight, the Padres face Zack Greinke and the Diamondbacks, who own a 1-5 mark this season when trying to avoid a road sweep so something has to give in Southern California.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-240) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Mariners (+100) vs. Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Braves (+180 to +160) at Mets

NEW YORK (AP) Center fielder Ender Inciarte robbed Yoenis Cespedes of a winning homer for the final out, and the New York Mets were handed another costly loss by last-place Atlanta when the Braves rallied for a 4-3 victory Wednesday night.

With two runners on in the ninth, Cespedes launched a drive to deep right-center. Inciarte raced to the wall and timed his jump perfectly, catching the ball just above the orange line atop the fence.

He held up his glove in excitement as Cespedes turned and walked slowly off the field. Some fans in the stunned crowd still had their hands on their heads as they filed up the aisles toward the exits.

New York remained tied with St. Louis and San Francisco in the NL wild-card race after all three teams lost Wednesday.

Bartolo Colon and Jeurys Familia failed to protect a three-run lead for the Mets. An error by normally sure-handed first baseman James Loney helped Atlanta tie it with an unearned run in the eighth.

Inciarte had an RBI groundout against Familia (3-4) in the top of the ninth, sending the Braves to their fifth straight victory.

Ian Krol (2-0) struck out pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki with the bases loaded to end the eighth, and Jim Johnson got three outs for his 17th save.

Atlanta's Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to a career-best 25 games and has reached base safely in 41 straight. Asdrubal Cabrera and Rene Rivera homered for the Mets.

                          DODGERS 9, GIANTS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasiel Puig's three-run homer highlighted a five-run first inning and the Dodgers routed the Giants, extending their NL West lead to six games with 10 remaining.

The Dodgers pounded out 12 hits in taking two of three from the rival Giants, who remained tied in the NL wild-card race after both the Mets and Cardinals lost earlier. The Dodgers conclude the regular season with three games at San Francisco next week.

Kenta Maeda (16-9) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings while improving to 4-0 against the Giants this season. The right-hander struck out six and walked one in making his 30th start of the season for just the second time in his career. Maeda is one win from tying Rick Sutcliffe's record by a rookie set in 1979.

Matt Moore (11-12) gave up six runs and seven hits in one inning, walked one and struck out none in a messy outing for the left-hander who had pitched exceptionally well at Dodger Stadium.

                          CUBS 9, REDS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - John Lackey pitched seven solid innings for his first win in six weeks, Miguel Montero drove in three runs, and Chicago swept Cincinnati.

Kris Bryant hit his 38th homer and Dexter Fowler also connected to help major league-leading Chicago move a season-high 42 games over .500. The Cubs (97-55) also matched their win total from a year ago and lowered their magic number for clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs to two over Washington.

Lackey (10-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his first win since he beat the Angels on Aug. 9. The right-hander, who retired his last 14 batters, went 0-1 with a 2.55 ERA in his previous four starts.

The last-place Reds lost for the seventh time in eight games. They managed just five runs and 19 hits in the three-game series against the NL Central champions.

Robert Stephenson (2-2) was pulled with two out in the fourth inning.

                          RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Boston scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning after first baseman Chris Davis' throwing error and beat Baltimore to pad its AL East lead.

Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox, who will try to complete a four-game sweep Thursday night. Boston pulled five games ahead of Toronto and six in front of Baltimore.

Clay Buchholz (8-10) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings for the Red Sox. Boston's seven-game winning streak, which began with a sweep of the Yankees, is its longest since an identical run early in the 2014 season.

Baltimore is a game behind the Blue Jays for the top AL wild card. The Orioles have lost five of seven, all at home. Ubaldo Jimenez (7-12) was the loser.

                          YANKEES 11, RAYS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Gary Sanchez hit two more homers and drove in five runs, Masahiro Tanaka won despite allowing four home runs in the third inning and New York beat Tampa Bay.

The Yankees moved within 2 1/2 games of Baltimore for the second AL wild-card spot. New York also would have to jump over Seattle, Houston and Detroit to earn a postseason berth.

Sanchez hit a three-run shot in a four-run second off Alex Cobb (1-1) and added his 19th homer in 43 games this season on a solo drive in the sixth against Justin Marks.

Tanaka (14-4) won his seventh straight decision.

Bobby Wilson, Evan Longoria, Brad Miller and Corey Dickerson all homered in the third. Miller later hit another solo shot to give him 30 homers this season.

                          MARINERS 2, BLUE JAYS 1, 12 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning and the Seattle beat Toronto to avoid a series sweep.

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (10-15), who pitched five scoreless innings in his last start Friday, came in on the 12th for his first relief appearance after 29 starts.

Guillermo Heredia reached on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Josh Donaldson to open the 12th. Ben Gamel followed with an attempted sacrifice bunt, and first baseman Ryan Goins appeared to have Heredia at third, but the ball popped out of Donaldson's glove on the tag.

Cano then followed with a run-scoring fly to left, quieting the decidedly pro-Blue Jays crowd, bolstered for the third straight game by thousands of fans from western Canada.

Nick Vincent (4-4) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

After being blanked on two hits for eight innings, the Blue Jays tied it in the ninth on Jose Bautista's 19th home run, a one-out solo shot to left off closer Edwin Diaz.

                          NATIONALS 8, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Max Scherzer pitched 6 2-3 innings to tie for the National League victory lead with 18, helping Washington beat Miami.

                          • Thursday’s six-pack

NFL trends to ponder for this week’s games………

                            — Arizona covered its first road game the last eight years.

                            — Bengals are 13-6-1 in last 20 games as a home favorite.

                            — Cowboys are 5-16 as a non-divisional home favorite.

                            — 49ers are 1-7 in last eight games as a divisional road underdog.

                            — Ravens are 2-10-2 vs spread in last 14 games as a favorite.

                            — Falcons are 3-11 vs spread in their last 14 games.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……….

                            13) As a football handicapper, I was looking to go against young QBs, especially when they make their first road start, because playing QB in the NFL is very hard. Aikman-Elway-Eli Manning; they were all bad when they started out. It is a freakin’ difficult job.

So after two weeks, Siemian-Wentz-Prescott-Garoppolo, none of whom had ever started an NFL game two weeks ago, are 7-1 now, and if you throw in Sam Bradford’s start after being a Viking for 8-9 days, that’s 8-1 for QBs who I was looking to go against. Very surprising.

                            12) My question is this: have coaches simplified things for these QBs? If so, maybe the lesson here is that simpler is better and that coaches have been making the game too complex. Let the players play.

                            11) 247 different players caught a pass in NFL’s Week 2; that’s an average of 7.7 per team.

                            10) For the first time in 20 years, there are no Big X teams in the top 15 of the AP poll; that’s no Texas-Oklahoma-Okla State-Baylor, etc……..

                            9) Actor Terry Crews (Longest Yard, Draft Day) was a walk-on football player at Western Michigan who earned a scholarship as a sophomore and wound up being drafted in the 11th round by the Rams, back when the draft had more than the current seven rounds.

                            8) Normally, major league teams are not allowed to make $$$ from sales of apparel of players who aren’t on their 40-man roster. Stunningly (not really), the Mets were given an exemption with Tim Tebow, so now they’re recouping their $100K investment by selling his #15 jersey.

Jerry Grote and Carlos Beltran can’t be real happy about that.

                            7) Mets are 70-39 when they hit a home run, 10-32 when they do not.

                            6) Carlos Gonzalez is a free agent after next season; over the last three years, CarGo has a .976 OPS at Coors Field, .707 on the road. He also has an injury history. Will Rockies trade him (most likely), sign him long term (expensive/doubtful) or let him walk (unlikely)?

                            5) For the last 40-45 years, Dick Enberg has been one of our country’s best broadcasters, in several sports; he is retiring as TV voice of the Padres next week. Once upon a time, Enberg was an assistant baseball coach at Cal State-Northridge.

My fondest memory of Enberg was his doing college basketball for NBC with Billy Packer and Al McGuire; talk about managing egos!!! Had to be a balancing act, keeping those two great characters/basketball minds on the same page. I learned so much about basketball from those three guys. Mr Enberg will be missed.

                            4) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have six kids? They also have $400M to divvy up in their divorce proceedings. I’m guessing when rich people go their separate ways, things can get complicated.

Read on the Interweb that when Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas got divorced, their settlement was 57 pages long and they didn’t have any custody issues to haggle over. As usual, the lawyers get rich.

                            3) When the Toronto Blue Jays play in Seattle, they have a lot of their own fans at the games. Blue Jays are Canada’s team; lot of people come down to the Emerald City from Vancouver to root on their Jays.

                            2) Got the IOS 10 upgrade on my IPhone yesterday; in lot of ways, it is like having a new phone. I’m due for a new phone if I want one, but will wait now- what is the point when there are lot of new features on this phone?

1– Thanksgiving weekend 2017, there will be a 16-team college hoop event in Portland, OR to honor Nike founder Phil Knight.

There will actually be two 8-team tournaments, with Duke-North Carolina-Michigan State-Oregon among the teams participating. It is expected to be a one-time happening, but it’ll be a good one.

                              • LEADING OFF: Orioles, Tigers try to move up in playoff race
                                September 22, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                SWEET SIXTEEN

The Orioles can move up in the wild-card race when they take on AL East-leading Boston at Camden Yards. It's a matchup of 16-game winners - Red Sox lefty David Price vs. Chris Tillman. Baltimore trails idle Toronto by one game for the top AL wild-card spot.

                                SKIDDING

Swept by last-place Atlanta this week, the Mets aim to end a three-game losing streak and keep pace in the NL wild-card chase. Rookie Seth Lugo (4-2) starts for New York vs. Phillies lefty Adam Morgan (2-10) at Citi Field.

                                EXTRA WORK

Justin Verlander is set to pitch as the playoff-contending Tigers play a day-night doubleheader at Minnesota. A rainout in the third inning at Target Field on Wednesday forced the twinbill. Detroit is one game behind Baltimore for the second AL wild-card slot.

                                WATCH AND WAIT

The Giants will continue to monitor pitcher Johnny Cueto, who strained his groin in a start Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. Manager Bruce Bochy says Cueto (17-5) could be out up to a week for playoff-hopeful San Francisco.
