  • Mets aim for playoffs, AL chase tightens
    September 30, 2016

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

    GETTING CLOSE

Bartolo Colon, the steadiest part of an injury-depleted rotation, tries to put the Mets back into the playoffs. The 43-year-old righty (14-8, 3.42 ERA) starts at Philadelphia as the defending NL champions aim to lock up a wild-card spot. The Phillies could throw a bunch of relievers, with Phil Klein coming from the bullpen to start.

    GOT A CHANCE

The Tigers hope Jordan Zimmermann can return to his form from early this season when the AL wild-card contenders play at Atlanta. Zimmerman (9-6, 4.88) has been slowed by a neck problem - he's started just twice since June 30 and been hit hard both times. Detroit is a half-game behind Toronto for the second wild-card spot.

    GET HAPPY

Left-hander J.A. Happ (20-4) starts for the Blue Jays at Fenway Park as they try to hold onto their AL wild-card spot. Toronto leads Detroit by a half-game for the second slot - the Orioles are a game ahead of the Blue Jays. Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) starts for AL East champion Boston.

    ONE MORE

Brian Dozier has 99 RBIs for the Twins going into this matchup in Chicago against the White Sox. The second baseman has hit 42 home runs, but was in a 1-for-32 slump before getting a hit Friday night.

    • Mariners tighten wild-card race, top A's
      September 30, 2016

SEATTLE (AP) Robinson Cano hit two home runs, Taijuan Walker pitched six effective innings and the Seattle Mariners moved within one game of the second AL wild-card spot, beating the Oakland Athletics 5-1 Friday night.

Seattle, which has won seven of nine, is one game behind Toronto for the second spot. The Mariners also trail Detroit by a half-game.

Cano had a two-run homer in the first. He added his 38th home run in the third, a solo shot that gave him 100 RBIs for the season. Norichika Aoki and Nelson Cruz also homered off Raul Alcantara (1-3), who was tagged for five runs on seven hits in two-plus innings.

Walker (8-11) allowed one run on two hits in six innings, but walked five in a 113-pitch outing. The only run came on Ryon Healy's 13th homer to open the sixth. Evan Scribner, Nick Vincent and Steve Cishek each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Cano drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center to give the Mariners to a 2-0 lead in the first after a leadoff infield single by Aoki.

Aoki made it 3-0 in the second with his fourth homer just inside the right field foul pole.

Cano opened the third with another home run to center and Cruz followed with his 42nd homer to make it 5-0.

The A's loaded the bases in the fifth on two walks and a two-out error by second baseman Cano, but Walker retired Stephen Vogt on a popout.

Zach Neal came on for Alcantara with one aboard in the third and retired all 15 batters he faced.

      TRAINER'S ROOM

Athletics: RF Danny Valencia was originally in the lineup, but was a late scratch due to neck soreness. Matt Olson started in right.

      UPON FURTHER REVIEW

There was a crew chief review of Cruz's home run, which barely cleared the outstretched glove of center fielder Jake Smolinksi at the top of the wall, but then bounced back onto the field. The call was upheld after a review estimated at 2 minutes and 21 seconds.

      MARINERS COMPLETE TRADE

Seattle sent minor league infielder Tim Lopes to Toronto to complete the Aug. 6 trade for reliever Pat Venditte. Lopes, 22, hit .284 with one home run and 49 RBIs with Double-A Jackson of the Southern League. Venditte, who pitches with either hand, is 0-0 with a 7.15 ERA in six appearances with Seattle.

      UP NEXT

Athletics: Rookie RHP Jharel Cotton (2-0, 1.44 ERA) makes his fifth career start since being called up from Triple-A Nashville on Sept. 7. He has not allowed more than one earned run in any of his four starts, lasting at least 5 2/3 innings in each.

Mariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 3.96 ERA) has been Seattle's most consistent pitcher over the course of the season. His 16 victories are a career high, but he is 2-5 in his last eight starts. Iwakuma is 4-0 against Oakland this season.

      • Tigers move up in playoff race, beat Braves
        September 30, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) Tigers manager Brad Ausmus just wants to focus on his team, rather than worry about the other teams in the AL wild-card race.

''We do appreciate the help, but we've still got to take care of business here,'' Ausmus said. ''We were able to do it tonight.''

Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs, Ian Kinsler and Justin Upton also connected and Detroit moved up in the playoff race, beating the Atlanta Braves 6-2 Friday night.

The Tigers won their third straight and pulled within a half-game of Toronto for the second wild-card spot. The Blue Jays lost at Boston 5-3. Baltimore remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Detroit.

The regular season is scheduled to end Sunday, but the Tigers might need to play beyond that. They were rained out against AL Central champion Cleveland this week and would have to make up that game at home if it impacts their playoff chances.

''We know we've got to take care of our business and see what happens on the other end,'' Upton said. ''It worked in our favor tonight.''

Daniel Norris (4-2) gave up one run, five hits, two walks and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

The Braves, playing their final series at Turner Field before moving north to the suburbs next year, had won 10 of 11. Matt Wisler (7-13) was chased in the fifth when James McCann's RBI single made it 5-0.

Detroit led 3-0 in the first on Kinsler's leadoff homer and Cabrera's two-run shot over the center-field wall.

Cabrera launched his 38th homer to the same location in the third, putting Detroit up 4-0.

Upton hit his 30th homer to make it 6-0 in the seventh. Closer Francisco Rodriguez, in a non-save situation, struck out the side in the ninth.

Wisler gave up five runs, nine hits, two walks and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings. He ended the season with a 5.00 ERA in 26 starts and one relief appearance.

Cabrera, a two-time AL MVP, has been a tough out over the last couple months, hitting .357 with 20 homers and 55 RBIs in his last 63 games. He has six multihomer games this season and 39 in his career.

''For him it's pretty normal,'' Ausmus said, ''but he's set a standard offensively that few have ever equaled in the history of the game.''

Norris escaped a jam with two runners on in the third when Matt Kemp flied out to the warning track.

Norris pitched through pain after Adonis Garcia's liner glance off his right wrist below his glove in the fifth, striking out the next four batters he faced to end the sixth.

Having an early lead helped Norris relax.

''I completely changed my game plan,'' Norris said. ''You go out there and you have a lead like that, `OK, I'm attacking these guys no matter what.' This offense just really makes things easy sometimes.''

Brandon Snyder hit his fourth pinch-hit homer of the season to cut the lead to 6-1 in the seventh and chase Norris.

Kemp made it 6-2 in the eighth with his 35th homer.

Upton is hitting .320 with 17 homers and 40 RBIs in his last 36 games.

        TRAINER'S ROOM

Detroit CF Cameron Maybin stayed in the game after getting hit on the left hand by Brandon Cunniff's pitch in the sixth. Maybin sustained a left thumb contusion on a head-first slide on Aug. 29 and had his left wrist broken by a pitch in spring training.

        EXCLUSIVE TERRITORY

With 446 homers, Cabrera moved into the 40th place on the career list. The 11-time All-Star began the game one homer behind Texas' Adrian Beltre. ... Kinsler's 28th homer tied Lou Whitaker in 1989 for the most homers by a Tigers second baseman in a single season. It was his eighth leadoff homer this year and 40th of his career.

        LOOKING AHEAD

Ausmus said RHP Michael Fulmer will start Monday if the Tigers play a makeup game against Cleveland. The rookie is 1-2 with a 6.98 ERA in four career starts in the season series.

        UP NEXT

Tigers RHP Jordan Zimmermann is 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA in five career starts at Turner Field, 7-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 16 career starts against Atlanta. Injuries have caused problems in his first year with Detroit. Since June 24, Zimmermann is 0-3 with a 16.78 ERA in four starts, a span of 12 1/3 innings. ... Braves rookie RHP Aaron Blair is 1-7 with an 8.02 ERA in 14 career starts.

                Short Sheet

                Saturday, October 1

We may or may not have MLB short sheet today, guys. The source appears to have already bumped baseball trends off the page to make room for NHL.

Well, why not? These next two are the most important two days in the entire MLB season and NHL regular season starts Wednesday. Sounds like the perfect time to dump baseball, doesn't it?

I get so tired of baseball being treated like some kind of second-class sport.

I'll keep watch and, if they post baseball, I'll add it. I wouldn't count on it, though.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The New York Mets clinched a playoff spot Saturday, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 to secure the top National League wild card.

The defending NL champions will host San Francisco or St. Louis on Wednesday night at Citi Field, with the winner advancing to face the Chicago Cubs.

James Loney hit a two-run homer to back Bartolo Colon (15-8), and Jeurys Familia closed for his major league-high 51st save. T.J. Rivera, Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera each had an RBI single.

The only other time the Mets made the postseason in consecutive years was 1999-2000. New York won the NL East last season and went all the way to the World Series before losing to Kansas City.

By clinching with one day to spare in the regular season, the Mets can save All-Star ace Noah Syndergaard for the wild-card game.

Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer in what was likely his penultimate game with the Phillies, who have dropped six straight. Patrick Schuster (0-1) took the loss.

                        GIANTS 3, DODGERS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Giants rookie Ty Blach outpitched ace Clayton Kershaw, and San Francisco held its lead for the last NL playoff spot going into the final day of the regular season.

The Giants stayed one game ahead of St. Louis for the second wild card.

Blach (1-0) earned his first big league victory, pitching eight innings of three-hit ball. He struck out six and walked one in his second start in the majors, and also got his first two hits.

Sergio Romo closed for his fourth save.

Angel Pagan homered in the fifth off Kershaw (12-4) to break a scoreless tie. Kershaw will start Game 1 of the Division Series against Washington - the Los Angeles loss gave the Nationals home-field advantage.

                        CARDINALS 4, PIRATES 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning, Matt Holliday provided another big boost and St. Louis pushed the playoff race to the final day.

The Cardinals trail San Francisco by one game for the second NL wild card.

Gyorko's 30th homer came off Felipe Rivero (1-6).

Kevin Siegrist (6-3) pitched the eighth. Seung Hwan Oh left runners at second and third for his 19th save.

BLUE JAYS 4, RED SOX 3

BOSTON (AP) - Ezequiel Carrera hit a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to give Toronto the lead after Boston tied it in the eighth on a balk.

The Blue Jays moved into a tie with Baltimore for the top spot in the AL wild-card race. The Blue Jays and Orioles each have 88 wins with one game to play, and Toronto owns the tie-breaker.

With the loss, Boston fell one-half game behind Cleveland in the race for home-field advantage when their ALDS series begins on Thursday.

With Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel (2-6) pitching, Michael Saunders drew a leadoff walk, and then pinch-runner Dalton Pompey took second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a wild pitch and scored on Carrera's fly to left.

                        YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Tyler Austin tied the score with a seventh-inning home run, Austin Romine and Brett Gardner drove in two runs each in the eighth and New York rallied from a three-run deficit to stall Baltimore's playoff push.

Thanks to Detroit's loss Saturday night, however, Baltimore (88-73) can clinch an AL wild card with a win Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

All-Star setup man Brad Brach (10-4) took the loss. He was charged with a season-high four runs.

Tyler Clippard (2-3) pitched a perfect eighth, and Dellin Betances struck out the side after an infield hit in the ninth. The Yankees stopped the Orioles' three-game winning streak and sent them to their second loss in eight games.

Mark Trumbo had four hits for Baltimore, which built a 3-0 lead against Luis Severino on Michael Bourn's two-run single and Manny Machado's 37th home run. Machado's third-inning, opposite-field drive to right ended an 0-for-17 slide.

                        BRAVES 5, TIGERS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis homered, rookie Aaron Blair had a career-high 10 strikeouts and last-place Atlanta damaged Detroit's playoff hopes.

The Tigers dropped 1 1/2 games out of the second AL wild-card spot. They need a win Sunday and a loss by Baltimore or Toronto to avoid postseason elimination.

The Tigers will have ace Justin Verlander on the mound Sunday. Depending on the playoff scenario, Detroit's regular season might extend with a makeup home game Monday against Cleveland.

Atlanta took a 5-2 lead in the seventh on Adonis Garcia's two-run single, but reliever Mauricio Cabrera loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Chaz Roe struck out Miguel Cabrera and got J.D. Martinez to ground into a double play.

Braves closer Jim Johnson gave up a run in the ninth on Jose Iglesias' infield single but retired pinch-hitter Victor Martinez to earn his 19th save. The Braves have won 11 of 13 heading into the last game at Turner Field.

Blair (2-7) entered with an 8.02 ERA but gave up four hits and two runs in five innings.

Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann (9-7) went four innings and is 0-4 with an 11.64 ERA in four starts since June 24.

                        NATIONALS 2, MARLINS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nationals rookie Trea Turner hit his 13th homer, Tanner Roark tuned up for the playoffs with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball and Washington beat Miami while clinching home-field advantage in the NL Division Series.

NL East champion Washington's third trip to the postseason in five years will begin Friday in the nation's capital against the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers, with Max Scherzer slated to face Clayton Kershaw.

The Nationals, it turned out, didn't need to beat the Marlins - which they did, thanks to Turner, Roark (16-10) and Bryce Harper's RBI single. The Dodgers' loss to San Francisco assured Washington a better record and was announced before the bottom of the seventh to the Nationals Park crowd of 31,635, which responded with a standing ovation.

Wei-Yin Chen (5-5) allowed two runs in five innings.

Mark Melancon got four outs for his 46th save.

                        INDIANS 6, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit a two-out, two-run double during an eighth-inning rally to help Cleveland beat Kansas City .

Kevin McCarthy replaced Matt Strahm (2-2) with a runner on and walked the bases loaded before Lindor's double over third base.

Mike Clevinger (3-3) won for the AL Central champs by retiring the only two batters he faced. Cody Allen worked the ninth for his 31st save in 34 opportunities.

Trevor Bauer tuned up for the postseason by striking out nine over six innings of three-run ball. Bauer will start Game 1 of the Division Series against Boston.

                        REDS 7, CUBS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jon Lester failed to become a 20-game winner, struggling for the first time since mid-July as the Reds pulled away to a victory over what's likely to be the Cubs' lineup for the first game of the playoffs.

Lester (19-5) gave up five runs in five innings, including Eugenio Suarez's two-run homer and a pair of RBIs by Joey Votto. The left-hander hadn't allowed five runs in a start since July 9.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon has been getting players - especially his starting pitchers - some rest heading into the postseason. Even so, the Cubs have won eight of 12, finishing one of their best regular seasons with a flourish. Chicago's 102 victories are its most since 1910.

Tim Adleman (4-4) gave up three runs in five innings as part of a rare Reds victory over Chicago.

                        RAYS 4, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Colby Lewis lost his fifth straight start in the right-hander's tuneup for the playoffs, allowing Corey Dickerson's three-run homer in Tampa Bay's victory.

All four runs off Lewis (6-5) came in the third inning and were unearned.

The Rangers rested most of their starters a night after the AL West winners clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Texas (95-66) remains a win shy of the franchise record.

Jake Odorizzi (10-6) struck out eight in six innings, giving up his only run on Robinson Chirinos' eighth homer in the sixth.

Alex Colome pitched around Dickerson's dropped fly ball leading off the ninth for his 37th save.

                        TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Byron Buxton and Jorge Polanco each hit a two-run home run to send James Shields to a major league high-tying 19th loss.

The Twins got 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball from Hector Santiago (13-10) in their third win in 14 games.

Shields (6-19) concluded a career-worst season split between San Diego and Chicago by allowing five runs and four hits over seven innings.

                        ASTROS 3, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Collin McHugh pitched three-hit ball over 7 2/3 innings to help Houston beat Los Angeles.

Tyler Skaggs (3-4) was removed after 1 2/3 innings. Ken Giles converted his 15th save.

                        BREWERS 4, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Chris Carter hit a tiebreaking home run with two outs in the 10th inning, leading Milwaukee over Colorado.

Carter's 41st homer of the season came on a 3-2 pitch against Adam Ottavino (1-3).

The Rockies tied it against Tyler Thornburg (7-5) in the ninth on pinch-hitter Tom Murphy's RBI double.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 9, PADRES 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Yasmany Tomas hit a three-run homer as part of Arizona's five-run first inning in a win.

The Diamondbacks stole six bases, including a franchise record-tying four in the first inning.

Diamondbacks starter Archie Bradley (8-9) struck out a career high 11 in seven innings.

Clayton Richard (3-4) gave up four earned runs and six hits with four walks in 4 1/3 innings for the Padres.

                        ATHLETICS 9, MARINERS 8. 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) - Joey Wendle hit a tiebreaking RBI double off Edwin Diaz in the top of the 10th inning, and Oakland ended Seattle's playoff hopes.

Nelson Cruz's comebacker with a man on in the bottom of the inning deflected off pitcher Ryan Madson (6-7) almost directly to first base, preventing Ben Gamel from scoring from second base.

Madson also escaped a bases-loaded situation in the ninth.

Seattle needed to win out to have a chance at an AL wild card.

Bruce Maxwell opened the 10th with a double off Diaz (0-4) and Wendle's fourth hit of the night put Oakland in front.

Season record of top 6 picks: 4-14 vs spread

                          Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

Before I start here, I’ll state the obvious: college football is amazingly entertaining. Seems like every single week, too.

                          13) Tennessee 34, Georgia 31– Last 3:00 of this game was nuts; Dawgs led 24-20 with 3:00 left, they try to THROW THE BALL OUT OF THEIR OWN END ZONE WITH A FRESHMAN QB- he gets sacked, fumbles and Tennessee gets a gift TD to lead 27-24. Horrific offensive coaching. Why the bleep are you throwing the ball out of your end zone with 3:00 left?

But because Butch Jones coaches Tennessee, the Vols let a Georgia WR run basically uncovered down the left sideline; he catches a 47-yard TD pass with 0:10 left– there is much jubilation between the hedges. For a while.

Tennessee runs the kick back to around midfield, Dawgs were offsides on the kickoff, so Vols get one play from the Georgia 43 with 0:04 left. For some unknown reason, Georgia rushes only three guys, Tennessee throws the ball into the end zone- one of their guys catches it and they win!!!!

I want to be at the booster club luncheon in Athens next week when Kirby Smart tries to explain why only three guys rushed on the last play.

From 6:45 to 7:15 Saturday night, there were fireworks on several TV channels. Superior entertainment.

                          12) North Carolina 37, Florida State 35– I could write about this game for a week, but because the Tar Heels wound up winning, I’ll leave out the part about the 20 or so ways they almost bleeped this game up.

First of all, the kicker on UNC drained a 54-yarder to win it at the gun, so good for him; TV analyst Rod Gilmore didn’t think he had the leg to reach it, but adrenaline is a funny thing.

FSU’s Dalvin Cook had 35 touches for 240 yards; he is the best running back in the country. The freshman QB will be a great player a couple years from now; he’s pretty damn good now.

But the Seminoles’ defense is awful; Tuesday night on Showtime will be an interesting watch. How will the Florida State kids react now that most of their goals for the season are basically shot on October 1st?

                          11) Oklahoma State 49, Texas 31– Charlie Strong is 13-16 in 2+ seasons in Austin; the man he replaced, Mack Brown, was 158-48 at Texas with one national title. In four games this year, Longhorns have allowed 47+ points three times- only team they held under 47? Texas-El Paso.

Mack Brown went 158-48 and got told to take a hike. Les Miles just got fired at LSU with a 114-34 record- both guys won national titles, but Charlie Strong is 13-16 and still has a job. Longhorns play Oklahoma in their rivalry game in Dallas next week. Playing the over is recommended.

                          10) Oklahoma 52, TCU 46– Sooners led 49-24 after three quarters, but Horned Frogs scored 22 straight to raise the blood pressure in the Sooner Schooner. TCU is a very young team- QB Hill threw for 449 yards. Total in the Texas-Oklahoma game next week might be 78 or 80.

                          9) Miami 35, Georgia Tech 21– Game was 14-7 until Hurricanes ran two Tech fumbles back for TDs in a 0:46 span to break game open. ‘canes host Florida State next week, in a game FSU really, really needs to win.

One last Seminole note: every Tuesday night on Showtime, they have a reality show on Florida State’s season, not the best year for this to be going on. But it sure as hell will be interesting TV.

                          8) Worst rule in all of sports: if your helmet comes off, you have to leave for a play. Non-sensical, as my high school chemistry teacher would’ve said. I can see a bunch of over-educated administrators sitting in a big conference room, sipping coffee, coming up with this one. Pure genius.

                          7) Washington 44, Stanford 6– Huskies totally bamboozled the Cardinal Friday night in Seattle; who made Stanford’s schedule? USC-UCLA and Washington on consecutive weekends in September? And next three weeks, they play Washington State-Notre Dame-Colorado. Not easy.

                          6) BYU 55, Toledo 53–Cougars are 2-3; their five games were decided by a total of 11 points (underdogs 3-1-1 vs spread).

Rockets threw for 505 yards, scored go-ahead two-point conversion with 1:11 left, but BYU drove 71 yards for the GW field goal at the gun. Toledo’s old coach was Matt Campbell (35-15 at Toledo) who is now at…….

                          5) Baylor 45, Iowa State 42– Campbell’s new team, the Cyclones fought like hell as a 17-point home dog, leading 42-28 with 12:00 left, but didn’t score in 4th quarter and Baylor escaped with a conference road win. Very tough loss for Iowa State, but their offense looks good, which will upgrade their recruiting.

                          4) Penn State 29, Minnesota 26 OT– Gophers led 13-3 at half, kicked go-ahead FG with 0:54 left, but couldn’t seal the deal- they had 31 first downs in a game where total yardage was 471-469. PSU coach James Franklin’s seat would’ve gotten very warm if he had lost this game.

                          3)

                          2)

                          1-
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
