            • Monday’s six-pack

              — Jim Furyk shot a 58 at Hartford Sunday, jumping from 70th to 5th; he is first golfer to break 60 twice in tournament play.

              — Manny Machado had three HRs in the first three innings in Chicago Sunday; he knocked in seven runs for the game.

              — Sonny Gray is back on the DL and the A’s season is officially a dumpster fire. Brad Pitt won’t be calling anytime soon.

              — Ichiro Suzuki got his 3,000th hit, a triple off the right field wall in Denver.

              — Dodgers starting pitchers finished the sixth inning in only seven of their last 28 games.

              — South Point Casino in Las Vegas had to refund roughly $40,000 in wagers when the Hall of Fame game was cancelled.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

              13) NFL cancelled the Hall of Fame game last night because the field wasn’t safe; the Field Turf just wasn’t playable. It was best that the game was cancelled given the conditions, but what an embarrassment for the Hall of Fame and the NFL.

David Baker is President of the Hall of Fame; he used to be the commissioner of the Arena League, ruining the league by moving popular franchises in Des Moines and Albany to Long Island and Indianapolis, two areas that didn’t give a rat’s ass about Arena Football. Mr Baker is an over-educated nitwit.

              12) Rough night for ESPN, which bagged Sunday Night Baseball for the week to show the football game, then had it cancelled, while the 7:00 Red Sox-Dodger game was a good one, shown on MLB Network.

              11) Alex Rodriguez will retire after Friday night’s game, ending a great career. Bronx Bombers play in Boston during the week, kind of doubt the Red Sox will be giving him any going-away gifts.

              10) An underreported thing is how many great athletes struggle with life after their playing days end; They find it hard to find something as stimulating as playing was for them. Will be curious to see if A-Rod winds up on TV.

              9) I do not think any team owners should be inducted into Halls of Fame, just players, coaches, GMs.

              8) I was looking back at old USFL stuff; the league lasted for three years in the mid-80’s. Jim Kelly, Reggie White, Steve Young played there. Jim Mora coached there. They played an 18-game schedule which is interesting; still think the NFL will wind up doing that- they’ll cut preseason to two games and play the Super Bowl President’s Day weekend.

              7) One of weird things about Jared Goff learning to become an NFL QB is that he hasn’t done two of the most basic things in football: running a huddle and taking snaps from center, since Cal Bears don’t huddle and use shotgun snaps. Terminology is more complex; young man has a lot to learn in a short period of time, so hopefully they’ll let him ease his way into it.

              6) There much be an incredible amount of money in hosting fantasy football leagues; I started getting ads to join leagues in late spring. Daily fantasy sports are legal again here in New York, by the way.

              5) Listened to the replay of the Hall of Fame speeches late Saturday night; was surprised by how intense Brett Favre was, as he described how his dad, who was also his coach, would never offer him praise. Plus their team ran the wishbone, which didn’t exactly showcase Favre’s passing talent.

I mean, if Brett Favre is insecure as to whether he made his dad proud of him, you wonder how many kids are raised like that and don’t make the NFL or play in college, so they feel like total failures. In a way, it was kind of sad.

              4) As far as Olympic basketball games go, how can you sit and watch a game where the pointspread is 50? The games not involving the American team should be interesting. China played the US team three times and 49 as a close as they came; not fun to watch.

              3) Line moves on some first-week college football games: UTEP, from -3.5 to -7.5, Arkansas, from -20.5 to -24 and Washington, from -22 to -25.

              2) San Diego pitcher Colin Rea, who was traded to Miami and then sent back to the Padres after he blew his arm out after only four innings with the Marlins, will have Tommy John surgery and is out for the entire 2017 season.

              1) Marqueze Coleman was Nevada-Reno’s best basketball player last year; he hurt his ankle late in year, was told it was a sprain and tried to play thru it. Turns out he tore three ligaments in the ankle, now he needs surgery and will miss his first pro season overseas. Oy.

                  • LEADING OFF: Fernandez vs Cueto, Wacha rolling for Cards
                    August 7, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                    JOSE VS JOHNNY

Miami sends ace Jose Fernandez (12-6, 2.87) against San Francisco's Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.73) to open a seven-day, six-game homestand. Cueto has lost his last two decisions and is winless in his last four starts overall.

                    ROAD WARRIOR

Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels (12-3, 2.89) will start the first of a two-game series in Colorado. Hamels is second in the AL in ERA and has the lowest road ERA in the AL at 1.90 in 12 starts. Tyler Anderson (4-3, 3.25) has won four straight decisions for the Rockies.

                    WINNING WACHA

Michael Wacha (7-7, 4.35) tries to win his sixth straight decision when St. Louis hosts Cincinnati. Wacha has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 10 straight starts. Reds lefty Cody Reed (0-6, 7.30) is still searching for his first major league victory.

                    HOT AT HOME

Mariners righty Hisashi Iwakuma (12-7, 3.99 ERA) opens a three-game series against Detroit, the final set of a 10-game homestand. Iwakuma is 11-3 in his last 14 starts, and Seattle is coming off a three-game sweep of the Angels. Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.42) hasn't lost since June 17, a span of seven starts.

                    HOT BREW

Brewers right-hander Zach Davies is scheduled for his 20th start of the season when he faces the Atlanta Braves in Milwaukee. Davies (9-4, 3.57) is 9-1 in 16 starts with a 2.86 ERA since starting the season 0-3.

                    • Alex Rodriguez to play final game with Yankees on Friday
                      August 7, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Ready or not, Alex Rodriguez will play his final game in pinstripes this week.

One of the most prolific hitters and polarizing figures in baseball history, the slumping slugger plans to take his final turn at-bat with the New York Yankees on Friday night and then become a special adviser and instructor with the team next year.

A-Rod and the club made the announcement before Sunday's 3-2 victory over Cleveland.

''This is a tough day. I love this game and I love this team,'' he said, often choking up. ''And today I'm saying goodbye to both.''

The 41-year-old Rodriguez, who sat out the 2014 season while serving a performance-enhancing drug suspension, will play against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium and then be released following Friday's game. New York will pay him the remainder of the approximately $27 million he's owed as part of his $275 million, 10-year contract.

Rodriguez said the agreement arose out of conversations over the past few days with Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner. The two met face-to-face more than once, and A-Rod said he asked for one more chance to play in front of a New York crowd.

Relegated to little more than a spare part lately, the three-time AL MVP acknowledged ''the last four weeks have not been fun.''

''It's been very painful and embarrassing to sit on the bench. It's been awkward,'' Rodriguez explained. ''So from that sense I'm very happy that we found this solution.''

But he made it clear he still thinks he could contribute on the field.

''Of course, I think I can play baseball. You always think you have one more hit in you, or help the team win one more game, for sure,'' said Rodriguez, who is four home runs shy of 700. ''That wasn't in the cards. That was the Yankees' decision and I'm at peace with it.''

A news release issued by the club indicated Rodriguez will be released after ''his final major league game'' to sign a contract that gives him a job working with minor leaguers throughout the Yankees' farm system. He will report directly to Steinbrenner, and the deal runs through Dec. 31, 2017.

A-Rod said he'll go home to Miami following Friday's game, and he thought his new duties would begin in spring training. He thanked the Steinbrenner family for the opportunity to stay in baseball.

General manager Brian Cashman acknowledged that Rodriguez has a right to change his mind and pursue any potential opportunity. And for his part, Rodriguez never used the word ''retire.''

So, if another team offered him a chance to play, would he consider it?

''You know, when Hal told me, I just told him: `Give me a few days. I need to kind of think on this, sleep on it.' I have not thought past the pinstripes, and my horizon is Friday,'' he said.

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia said when Rodriguez makes decisions, ''they're pretty much final.''

''He played a long time, since he was 18 years old,'' Sabathia said. ''I know he has bigger goals and bigger dreams to do different things.''

A 14-time All-Star, Rodriguez is hitting .204 this season with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 216 at-bats. He's started only once in 15 games since July 22.

''It's sad to see Alex going like this,'' teammate Brett Gardner said.

New York manager Joe Girardi said he'd talk to Rodriguez about possibly playing this week in Boston.

''If he wants to play in every game, I'll find a way,'' Girardi said.

When the fourth-place Yankees (56-55) jettisoned veterans Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran leading up to last week's trade deadline, they made it clear they were turning toward a youth movement.

On Friday, 36-year-old first baseman Mark Teixeira announced he will retire at the end of the season.

''We all want to keep playing forever,'' Rodriguez said. ''But it doesn't work that way.''

A-Rod trails only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) on the career home run list and joins Boston bopper David Ortiz as iconic stars apparently in their final seasons this year.

''As much as he's gone through, the PED stuff and all the stuff that's kind of happened throughout his career, he's still one of my favorite players to watch as a child growing up,'' Rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr. said. ''Hopefully we can send him off with a thank you for a great career.''

Rodriguez has a $20 million salary this year and is owed $20 million more in 2017, the final season of a $275 million contract that was the largest in baseball when he signed it.

''After spending several days discussing this plan with Alex, I am pleased that he will remain a part of our organization moving forward and transition into a role in which I know he can flourish,'' Steinbrenner said in a statement.

Rodriguez led the Yankees to their 2009 World Series title, but it's been a tumultuous tenure since he arrived before the 2004 season in a trade with Texas.

And right up until Sunday's surprise announcement, his time in pinstripes has been filled with drama.

He won his second and third AL MVP awards with the Yankees but has been a pariah to some since his 2009 admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs with the Rangers.

Starting in 2008, Rodriguez made six trips to the disabled list in six seasons.

Major League Baseball suspended him on Aug. 5, 2013, for the remainder of that season and all of 2014 for violations of baseball's drug and labor contract, caused by use and possession of numerous prohibited performance-enhancing substances and attempting to cover up his violations.

On Sunday, Rodriguez said he's ''been to hell and back, and made every mistake in the book.''

Asked how he's managed to repair his relationship with Yankees management, he smiled and said: ''I have no idea. I wish I knew.''

''I do want to be remembered as someone who was madly in love with the game of baseball,'' Rodriguez said. ''And also, I'm going to be hopefully remembered for someone who tripped and fell a lot, but someone that kept getting up.''

Rodriguez returned from hip surgery and played while appealing the suspension, and the following January an arbitrator cut the penalty to all of the 2014 season.

A-Rod made a successful return last year, when the Yankees made him a full-time DH, but his offense slid late in the season. He hit .250 with 33 homers and 86 RBIs overall.

His slump continued at the start of this season when he hit .185 with four homers and eight RBIs in April. He batted .130 in May and was on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. His average rose to .267 with two homers and 13 RBIs in June before dropping.

''Mechanically, I just never felt like I caught up,'' Rodriguez said. ''I thought I would have a strong finish and a stronger year next year, but again, that wasn't in the cards.''

Rodriguez started his big league career with Seattle in 1994 and signed a $252 million, 10-year contract with Texas before the 2001 season. When the Rangers decided to trade him, a proposed deal to Boston fell through before he was traded to New York. He agreed to shift from shortstop to third base with the Yankees, who already had Derek Jeter at shortstop.

A-Rod opted out of the contract after the 2007 season, became a free agent and signed his $275 million deal with the Yankees.

                      • Going streaking: Is there a right time to pounce on an MLB winning streak?

If you’re anything like me, you watched the Indians during their 14-game run and kept thinking, “The second I jump on them, they’ll lose and I’ll be responsible for the mush.”

On Wednesday, June 15 of this year, former American League Cy Young winner Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians made their way to the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City just moments after suffering a 9-4 loss to the defending World Series champion Royals that signified both the culmination of a three-game sweep as well as the evaporation of a three-game lead in the American League Central. The Tribe arrived in Kansas City just three days prior having won nine of their previous 12 contests to forge a 35-27 record and a lofty perch above each of their four divisional foes.

And less than 72 hours later, it was all gone.

For some, Cleveland’s three-game skid in Kansas City back in mid-June that resulted in a tie between the Indians and Royals atop the A.L. Central was a sign of troubling things to come. After all, Major League Baseball teams fall into disastrous slumps all the time. Just look at the current state of the San Francisco Giants for proof in regards to this theory, as the Orange & Black have dropped 13 of their 18 outings since entering the All-Star break with the best record in the business.

Unfortunately for the Royals, Tigers, White Sox and Twins, this iteration of the Cleveland Indians had other ideas.

16 days after getting swept by the Royals in Kansas City to force a tie atop their division, the Tribe found themselves with the second-best record in the American League at 49-30 along with a hefty seven-game lead over those same Royals thanks to an incendiary 14-game stretch of victories that broke a franchise-record 13-game winning streak established all the way back in 1942 and then duplicated in 1951.

While the baseball world marveled at Cleveland’s electrifying power surge, the gambling world began calculating the profits that could have been generated had anybody possessed the foresight necessary to jump on the Tribe’s train at the start of their devastating tear through the latter part of the June schedule.

Which brings us to an interesting question: From a sports betting perspective, when is the appropriate time to jump on a Major League Baseball winning streak? After all, if you’re anything like me, you watched the Indians during their 14-game run and kept thinking, “The second I jump on them, they’ll lose and I’ll be responsible for the mush.”

Here’s a breakdown of how MLB clubs have performed during winning streaks of various lengths both this year as well as over the past five seasons. The information below is laid out as follows: The first record listed after “3-game win streak” indicates how all MLB clubs have performed in their next outing, which essentially would be either a fourth consecutive win or the end of said winning streak. The second record indicates the same information, but over a five-year stretch spanning 2012 until present day.

WHEN TO JUMP ON A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WINNING STREAK

                        3-game win streak: 111-94 (.541), 759-701 (.520)
                        4-game win streak: 54-57 (.486), 378-379 (.499)
                        5-game win streak: 29-25 (.537), 185-191 (.492)
                        6-game win streak: 15-14 (.517), 96-88 (.522)
                        7-game win streak: 5-9 (.357), 55-40 (.579)
                        8-game win streak: 1-4 (.200), 29-26 (.527)
                        9-game win streak: 1-0 (1.000), 16-13 (.552)
                        10-game win streak: 1-0 (1.000), 7-9 (.438)

The first thing that jumps out from the above information is that teams on a three-game winning streak have won a fourth consecutive matchup a semi-respectable 52.0 percent of the time over the last five seasons, but are winning less than half the time since 2012 when attempting to win either a fifth (49.9 percent) or sixth (49.2 percent) consecutive game.

However, the six-game winning streak is where things start to get really interesting, as MLB clubs posting six consecutive victories are winning a seventh straight game 52.2 percent of the time and an eighth straight matchup 57.9 percent of the time over the last five years before those numbers begin to fall a bit once an eight-game winning streak has been achieved.

Granted, none of this should come as a total surprise as it’s fairly simple to understand that winning five games in a row is harder to achieve than winning four games in a row, just like winning four contests in a row more difficult to accomplish than winning three matchups in a row. But at the very least, the last five MLB seasons have shown us that if a good time does, in fact, exist as it pertains to jumping on a winning streak, game seven and game eight would be the time to do it.

I’ll leave you with this additional nugget to ponder as we head into this weekend’s slate of action: In 2016, teams riding a five-game winning streak have seen the UNDER hit in game six 62.3 percent of the time (33-20-1), while teams riding a six-game winning streak have seen the UNDER hit in game seven 70.4 percent of the time (19-8-2).

                              • Monday's Diamond Notes
                                August 8, 2016

Hottest team: Tigers (10-2 past 12)

The Tigers continue to breathe down the neck of the Indians. They head out west to battle the Seattle Mariners in Monday's series opener, looking to extend their impressive run against the American League West. Detroit has won eight straight against the AL West, and they have also won each of their past seven series openers. The streaking Tigers have won nine of their past 10 against teams with a winning overall record, and 6-1 in their past seven against right-handed starting pitching. In addition, they're 15-2 in Michael Fulmer's past 17 starts, and 4-0 in Fulmer's past four against teams with a winning overall mark.

                                Coldest team:
                                Athletics (1-8 past nine)

The woes continued for the A's, getting swept at home against the Cubs. They were outscored 13-3 in the series, and now set their sights on the visiting Baltimore Orioles. In their first three-game series of the season at Camden Yards in early May, Baltimore won two of three while outscoring the A's 20-13. The O's have won four of the past five against AL West fores, but they're 5-18 in their past 23 road starts by Kevin Gausman. The O's are also 2-8 in Gausman's past 10 road outings against a team with a losing record. However, the A's are just 1-7 in their past eight against a right-handed starting pitcher while going 0-6 in their past six against teams with a winning overall mark.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Odorizzi, Rays (6-5, 3.70 ERA)

Odorizzi appears to be a lot more comfortable lately, perhaps because the non-waiver trade deadline has passed and he wasn't moved. He is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 0.73 WHIP over his past three outings, issuing just two walks with 16 strikeouts over the past 20 2/3 innings. The Rays have won four of the past five meetings against the Blue Jays, while the Jays are just 2-5 in R.A. Dickey's past seven against Tampa Bay.

Coldest pitcher: Cody Reed, Cincinnati (0-6, 7.30 ERA)

Reed has been horrific for the Redlegs, going 0-6 with a 7.30 ERA overall. He hasn't improved much over his past three outings, going 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA. A major problem with Reed is his frequent issuances of free passes, walking 15 in just 40 2/3 innings. The Reds have lost eight straight with Reed on the hill, including 0-4 in his past four road assignments. They're 0-5 in his past five against teams with an overall winning record, too.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (0-7-1 past eight)

The 'under' is 0-6-1 in the past seven road games for the Texas Rangers. That streak will be put to the test in a road series in Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. The 'under' is also 5-0-1 in their past six interleague road games, and 12-3-1 in their past 16 road games against a team with a winning home record. For Colorado, the 'under' is 5-1-1 in their past seven interleague affairs, and 14-6 in their past 20 against teams with an overall winning record.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (9-0 past nine)

The Twins offense has been doing the job at the dish lately, posting five or more runs in seven of their past nine outings and 10 of the past 14 contests. The 'over' is also 6-0-2 in Tyler Duffey's past eight home starts, and 10-1-3 in his past 14 assignments overall. The 'over' is also 3-0-1 in the past four head-to-head meetings between these clubs, and 3-0-1 in Collin McHugh's past four starts against Minnesota.

                                Matchup to watch:
                                Marlins vs. Giants
It's 'Jose Day' in Miami, and that usually means the Marlins are successful. Fernandez is 26-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 38 career starts at Marlins Park. He'll be angling to avenge a loss in San Francisco April 23, as he gave up four runs over six frames in that loss. The Giants were 16-2 in All-Star Johnny Cueto's first 18 outings, but they're 1-3 over his past four assignment. It's hard to predict who will win the game, but it is likely to be close. In 10 of 13 games played between these clubs at Marlins Park the game has been decided by one or two runs.

                                Betcha didn’t know:
The Cardinals look to maintain their dominance with Michael Wacha on the bump against the Reds. They're 7-0 in his past seven starts against Cincinnati, and 4-0 in Wacha's past four home assignments against the Reds. Cincinnati has won just four of their past 13 against St. Louis, and they're 22-53 in their past 75 trips to Busch Stadium II in the Lou. While St. Louis has won just two of their past 10 against a left-handed starting pitcher, and 1-8 in their past nine at home vs. LHP. However, they're 6-2 in Wacha's past eight outings, and 25-11 in his past 36 at home.

                                Biggest public favorite:
                                Dodgers (-205) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+110) at Mariners

                                Biggest line move:
Orioles (+130 to +140) at Athletics
