Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here
13) Russell Westbrook gets $86.5M for three years from the Thunder; Golden State’s first visit to Oklahoma City has to be a national TV game, right? Opening Night? Christmas?
12) Jimmer Fredette signed to play in China, meaning his debut as an ESPN NBA analyst is only a couple years away.
11) Dodgers put Clayton Kershaw on the 60-day DL, meaning he cannot come back until at least August 27 and explains why they dealt for Rich Hill.
10) Nick Foles signed with the Chiefs and his old coach Andy Reid instead of the Cowboys; Foles will back up Alex Smith in KC.
9) Texas Rangers are 23-8 in one-run games this year, 50-30 in two years under manager Jeff Banister.
8) Since 2003, NFL underdogs of 7.5+ points cover 55.9% of time in divisional games, 50.7% in non-divisional tilts.
7) Last six golf majors, Jason Day is -43, Henrik Stenson -33, Jordan Spieth -28, Brooks Koepka -23, Phil Mickelson -21.
6) Rookie mistake: Wednesday night, Giants-Phils were 4-4 in 12th inning. Philly had bases loaded, one out and Mikael Franco was up. He singled to CF, but the runner on first, rookie Aaron Altherr, never touched second and started celebrating. Giants threw ball in, touched 2B and it became a force play instead of a hit, costing Franco a basehit.
The run still counted and the game ended, but Phils’ coach Larry Bowa had a talk with the rookie about it after the game; it is not cool to cost your teammate a hit.
5) Tampa Bay Bucs’ offensive coordinator Todd Monken quit his job as head coach at Southern Miss to join the Bucs; he had resurrected the USM program, going 9-5 LY, after he inherited a dumpster fire. Most guys prefer being a head coach.
4) On August 4, 1982, Joel Youngblood played for two different teams in two cities in the same day; he went 1-2 for the Mets in Wrigley Field, was traded to the Expos after the game, flew to Philly and got a hit for Montreal that same night.
3) Yoenis Cespedes is on the DL with a quad injury now, as reports of his addiction to playing golf (even on game days) is making the rounds in the New York media. If you make $27M a year, I’m thinking you should save your energy for the games.
2) Jim Thome hit 13 walk-off homers in his career, the most ever. Six guys have 12; five Hall of Famers and Albert Pujols, a future Hall of Famer.
1) President Obama has commuted the sentences of 562 federal inmates while in office, more than the previous nine presidents combined. I have no opinion on this because I know so little about it, but it just seems odd.
