LEADING OFF: Struggling Arrieta, Strasburg's sweet 16?
            August 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

            SUPER STEPHEN

Washington ace Stephen Strasburg goes for his major league-leading 16th win, starting at home against the Giants in a matchup of NL division leaders. Strasburg (15-1, 2.63) could set a career high for wins with a victory.

            JAKE'S JAM

Jake Arrieta is 0-3 in his last five starts for the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. The Cy Young Award winner (12-5, 2.75 ERA) tries to get back into the victory column when he starts at Oakland.

            NEWCOMER NOVA

Ivan Nova makes his Pittsburgh debut, starting at PNC Park against Cincinnati. The right-hander was 7-6 with a 4.90 ERA for the New York Yankees when they sent him to the Pirates before Monday's trade deadline for two players to be named.

            STILL STARTING

Aaron Sanchez (11-1, 2.71) starts for Toronto against Kansas City after his role with the team was publicly debated this week. General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that the Blue Jays were moving the All-Star righty to the bullpen to limit his innings. That move was met by criticism from the fan base, and Toronto then changed course, announcing a six-man rotation that keeps the 24-year-old starting but still limits his workload.

            MAJOR STREAK IN MINOR LEAGUES

Indians prospect Francisco Mejia has the longest hitting streak in the minor leagues in 62 years, and he'll try to stretch his run to 48 games when Class A Lynchburg faces Salem. The 20-year-old catcher is still well short of Joe Wilhoit's record 69-game streak set with Wichita in 1919. Joe DiMaggio was Wilhoit's closest challenger when he hit safely in 61 straight games in 1933, and Roman Mejias has the third longest streak at 55 games, set with Waco in 1954.

            ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki struck out on three pitches in his only at-bat Friday and remains two hits away from 3,000. He is in an 0-for-11 slump, and manager Don Mattingly said there was no concrete decision on when the outfielder would be back in the lineup.

              August 6, 2016

Hottest team: Nationals (7-3 last 10)

Washington has caught fire since blowing a late lead in a 7-6 setback at Cleveland on July 26. The Nationals have won seven of their past nine games, including three victories over the reeling Giants. Washington’s offense continue to hit the ball well by knocking out two homers in Friday’s 5-1 triumph over San Francisco to pick up its fourth consecutive win. The Nationals have been inconsistent at home recently by splitting their last 16 games in D.C., but hope for another victory against San Francisco when ace Stephen Strasburg takes the mound tonight, searching for his 16th win of the season

              Coldest team:
              Mets (3-7 last 10)

New York has slipped to third place in the National League East behind Miami after dropping seven of its past 10 contests. The Mets fell short against the Tigers in Friday’s 4-3 setback, as New York owns an 0-10 record in its past 10 games off a victory. Will things turn around tonight in the Motor City? The Mets have won six straight on the road off a loss, which is a good sign. However, right-hander Logan Verrett is winless in his last two outings in spite of the Mets holding leads in the eighth inning or later in losses to the Cardinals and Yankees.

              Hottest pitcher:
Danny Duffy, Royals (7-1, 2.98 ERA)

The two-year reign with Kansas City as the top dog in the American League will come to an end this season with the Royals sitting seven games below the .500 mark. The only bright spot in their pitching staff is Duffy, who is coming off an incredible performance in his past outing at Tampa Bay, striking out 16 batters and allowing one hit in eight innings of a 3-0 shutout. The Royals have won six straight starts made by Duffy, including four consecutive victories at home. Kansas City knocked out Toronto in the ALCS last season, but owns an 0-4 record against the Blue Jays this season as Duffy tries to put the Royals in the win column.

              Coldest pitcher:
Patrick Corbin, Diamondbacks (4-10, 5.30 ERA)

Arizona snapped a four-game losing streak in Friday’s walk-off triumph over Milwaukee, as the D-backs improved to 18-38 at home this season. Corbin hasn’t been successful at all at Chase Field this season with Arizona posting a 1-9 record in his 10 home starts, while allowing 18 earned runs in his past three home defeats. Arizona is 0-5 in Corbin’s previous five trips to the mound, including a 9-4 setback at Milwaukee on July 26 in which he gave up four earned runs in five innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (6-0 last six)

Texas suffered only its second loss in 11 tries this season against Houston on Friday, getting blanked, 5-0 by Dallas Keuchel. The Rangers made plenty of moves at the trade deadline to bolster in their lineup, but Texas has plated eight runs in the past four games. Texas has finished UNDER the total in six of its previous seven road contests, as recently acquired Lucas Harrell heads to the mound tonight. Harrell is coming off a victory in his Texas debut, while finishing UNDER the total of 10 in a 5-3 win over Kansas City. Another UNDER may be in order for Harrell and the Rangers as the right-hander has given up one earned run or less in two of three road starts this season.

              Biggest OVER run:
              Twins (7-0 last seven)

Minnesota’s offense has heated up of late by scoring at least six runs in five of the past six games, including six in last night’s 6-2 victory at Tampa Bay. The Twins have scored 41 runs in four wins on their current road trip at Cleveland and Tampa Bay, while sailing OVER the total in eight of the past nine contests away from Target Field. Rookie right-hander Jose Berrios heads to the mound for Minnesota tonight as the Twins have put together a 4-0-1 mark to the OVER in his five starts, including a pair of easy OVERS in his last two road outings.

              Matchup to watch:
              Marlins vs. Rockies

Colorado has steamrolled its way into the NL Wild Card race by winning 11 of 13 games heading into its weekend series with Miami. However, the Rockies couldn’t hold onto a late 3-1 lead in Friday’s 5-3 setback to the Marlins as Miami scored four runs in the ninth inning. Miami improved to 4-1 in five games against Colorado this season as Andrew Cashner makes his second start for the Marlins since getting acquired from the Padres in late July. The last time Cashner took the mound at Coors Field on June 10, the right-hander exited after only six pitches due to a neck injury.

Chad Bettis counters for Colorado, as the right-hander has tossed at least six innings in six consecutive outings. The Rockies have performed well when Bettis takes the hill as Colorado owns an 8-2 record in his last 10 starts, including five straight victories at Coors Field. Colorado has struggled in Game 2’s of a home series recently, posting a 2-4 record in the last six tries.

              Betcha didn’t know:
The Orioles have been terrific when Chris Tillman takes the mound this season, going 19-4 in his 23 starts. Since the start of July, Tillman has finished UNDER the total in six consecutive outings, while going 7-2 to the UNDER in his previous nine road starts. The White Sox have hit the OVER in five of their past six Game 2’s of a home series, while scoring at least five runs in three of their last four home contests.

              Biggest public favorite:
              Cardinals (-270) vs. Braves

              Biggest public underdog:
              Royals (+120) vs. Blue Jays

              Biggest line move:
Pirates (-125 to -145) vs. Reds

                      13) Over last five years, Alabama is 0-5 vs spread (4-1 SU) if they lost their previous game. Luckily for Bama backers, they don’t lose very often.

                      12) Florida State is 24-16-1 vs spread as a favorite under Jimbo Fisher; they’ve allowed 42.7 ppg in losing two of last three bowl games.

                      11) Notre Dame is 5-9 as a road favorite under Brian Kelly.

                      10) Last three years, Houston Cougars are 13-1-1 vs spread on the road- they’ve beaten an ACC team in bowl games the last two years.

                      9) Over last seven years, Boise State is +76 in turnovers; they won four of last five bowls, but are just 11-20 as home favorites the last five years. Since ’08, Broncos are 29-13 as road favorites.

                      8) Over last three years, Western Michigan is 11-4 as a road underdog. Last three years, Marshall is 13-5-1 as a home favorite.

                      7) Arkansas State is 23-14 vs spread in its last 37 road games; they’re 31-16 vs spread in Sun Belt games, despite having five different head coaches the last seven years.

                      6) Average total in West Virginia’s last four bowl games: 80.5. Mountaineers are 9-15 as home favorites under Holgorsen.

                      5) NC State is 5-11-1 as an underdog under Doeren; they’re 8-15-1 vs spread in ACC games, 9-5 in non-conference tilts.

                      4) Kansas hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2008; since then, they’re 10-22-1 as a road underdog.

                      3) Colorado is 13-5 vs spread at home under MacIntyre, covering their last six tries as a home favorite.

                      2) Last three years, Mike Leach’s Washington State Cougars are 12-3 as road underdogs.

                      1) Last four years, Iowa is 8-17 as a home favorite, but they covered 13 of last 15 road games. Hawkeyes lost their last four bowl games, allowing 35.5 ppg.

                      • Yankees announce Sunday news conference with Alex Rodriguez
                        August 6, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) The Yankees announced they will hold a news conference with Alex Rodriguez before Sunday's game against Cleveland.

In its announcement Saturday night, New York didn't detail the purpose of the gathering at Yankee Stadium. The team said general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi will be made available following Rodriguez's news conference.

The 41-year-old designated hitter, a 14-time All-Star, has a .204 average this year with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 216 at-bats. He has all but disappeared from the Yankees in the last month, at first losing his designated hitter job against right-handed pitchers and then hardly leaving the bench. Girardi has at times become annoyed by repeated media questions over Rodriguez's status.

''No matter what happens, I'm at peace with myself,'' Rodriguez said Tuesday.

''I think I can contribute. I think I can help out in the clubhouse,'' he added, ''but if not, I have two beautiful daughters waiting for me in Miami.''

On Friday, the Yankees called a news conference with 36-year-old first baseman Mark Teixeira, who announced he will retire at the end of the season.

A-Rod has had just one start and seven at-bats in 14 games since July 22 as New York traded veterans Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova, turning toward a youth movement. He is in a 4-for-36 (.111) slump and has struck out in five of his last six at-bats.

''I can't really tell you when I'm going to play him,'' Girardi said Thursday.

Rodriguez has just two home runs since June 3, leaving his career total at 696. He trails only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) on the career list.

A-Rod has a $20 million salary this year and is owed $20 million more in 2017, the final season of a $275 million, 10-year contract that was the baseball's largest when he signed it.

Rodriguez helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series but had been in repeated controversy since he arrived ahead of the 2004 season in a trade with Texas.

He won his second and third AL MVP awards with the Yankees but has been a pariah for some since his 2009 admission he used performance-enhancing drugs while with Texas earlier in his career.

Starting in 2008, Rodriguez made six trips to the disabled list in six seasons for a strained right quadriceps (2008), right hip surgery (2009), a strained left calf (2010), right knee surgery (2011), a broken left hand (2012) and left hip surgery (2013).

Major League Baseball suspended him on Aug. 5, 2013, for the remainder of that season and all of 2014 for violations of baseball's drug and labor contract caused by use and possession of numerous prohibited performance-enhancing substances and attempting to cover up his violations.

Rodriguez returned from hip surgery and played while appealing the suspension, and the following January an arbitrator cut the penalty to all of the 2014 season.

A-Rod made a successful return last year, when the Yankees made him a fulltime DH, but his offense slid late in the season and hit .224 from Sept. 1 on. That left him with a .250 average for the year with 33 homers and 86 RBIs.

His slump continued at the start of this season when he hit .185 with four homers and eight RBIs in April and .130 with two homers and six RBIs in May, when he was on the disabled list from May 4-26 because of a strained right hamstring. His average rose to .267 with two homers and 13 RBIs in June before dropping again.

Rodriguez started his big league career with Seattle in 1994 and signed a $252 million, 10-year contract with Texas before the 2001 season, the largest agreement in baseball history. When the Rangers decided to trade him, a proposed deal to Boston fell through before the trade to New York. He agreed to shift from shortstop to third base as part of the trade to the Yankees, who already had Derek Jeter at shortstop.

A-Rod opted out of the contract after the 2007 season, became a free agent and signed the $275 million deal with the Yankees.

                        • Lincecum designated for assignment
                          August 6, 2016

SEATTLE (AP) Tim Lincecum was designated for assignment on Saturday by the Los Angeles Angels, bringing into question the professional future for the two-time Cy Young Award winner.

The Angels made the move a day after Lincecum allowed six runs in the first inning of a 6-4 loss to Seattle. Lincecum is 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts with Los Angeles in his return from left hip surgery last September.

Lincecum signed a $2.5 million, one-year contract with the Angels in May. Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels are hopeful that Lincecum will accept an assignment to Triple-A.

''Where Tim is now and where he needs to be obviously there is a gap there,'' Scioscia said. ''It's very clear now that he hasn't progressed from his first couple of starts, he's kind of regressed a little bit and it's a matter of just understanding his mechanics, get his release point more consistent and that is really impossible to work at, at the major league level.''

The longtime Giant pitched in his hometown for just the second time in his career Friday, and it proved the final straw for the Angels. He barely made it out of the first inning, allowing six runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. It was the sixth time Lincecum allowed at least four earned runs this season.

Lincecum went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts last year after throwing no-hitters against San Diego in July 2013 and June '14. He had surgery last Sept. 3 and didn't immediately sign with a team after concluding a $35 million, two-year deal with the Giants. In nine seasons with San Francisco, he helped the team win three World Series titles - in 2010, `12 and `14.

''I think there are a variety of things he's working on and in every area where you say he's not where he should be he's very close,'' Scioscia said. ''But that gap is only going to be filled with trial and error. He's got to try and find his delivery, find his release point and that's virtually impossible to do in the major leagues.''

                          • Red Sox, Dodgers meet
                            August 6, 2016

BOSTON RED SOX (60-49) at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (61-49)

First pitch: Sunday, 7:10 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Red Sox -105, Dodgers -105, Total: 7.5

                            Game 1: Boston 9 Los Angeles 0
                            Game 2: Los Angeles 3 Boston 0

David Price and the Red Sox will be hoping to pick up a Sunday night victory over the Dodgers.

The Red Sox have extremely high hopes this season and they’ll have a very good test in their Sunday night meeting with the Dodgers. Both teams look like they are likely to make the postseason and it wouldn’t be crazy if they ended up facing one another in the World Series. With that being said, both teams have an excellent opportunity to prove what they are made of on the national stage on Sunday.

This game will feature a very intriguing pitching matchup, as LHP David Price (9-7, 4.30 ERA, 156 K) is going to be on the mound for Boston and RHP Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 3.07 ERA, 35 K) will be hoping to keep things close for Los Angeles. While the Red Sox seemingly have the edge in this pitching battle, Price has severely underperformed this season and McCarthy is a guy that is capable of shutting down his opponent when he is on his game. He is, however, on an innings limit and that could affect this one.

David Price has not lived up to his contract with Boston, but there is still a lot of time for him to turn things around. Price will see a number of starts to finish out the year and a few good outings in a row could really help the Red Sox forget how poorly he started the year. He has been a bit better as of late, allowing just four earned runs in his past 15.0 innings of work. Price struck out a total of 11 batters in those games and walked just one. He’ll need to keep things up with his control, as it’s big for him to keep free base-runners at a minimum. Price will, however, need to do a better job of avoiding contact. He has allowed seven or more runs in eight of his past 10 starts and that simply isn’t going to cut it for a guy that is considered elite in this league.

Offensively, the Red Sox will be counting on some solid performances from guys like 3B Aaron Hill, 2B Dustin Pedroia, 1B Hanley Ramirez and DH David Ortiz. The four of them are a combined 17-for-49 with two homers and 13 RBI against the pitcher. Assuming they are all in the lineup, they should be able to produce at the plate on Sunday.

Brandon McCarthy started his year on a positive note for the Dodgers, but he has run into some trouble in his past two outings. McCarthy has pitched just seven total innings in those starts and the Dodgers need him to start working deeper into games. The issue last game was his control, as McCarthy walked five batters in his three innings of work. If he cannot throw strikes in this game then there’s a chance he gets yanked early once again.

For the Dodgers, guys like 1B Adrian Gonzalez and SS Corey Seager are going to need to step it up in this one. Gonzalez is just 3-for-21 against Price in his career, but he is one of the best hitters that Los Angeles has and needs to find a way to figure out Price in this one. Seager, meanwhile, doesn’t have experience against Price, but he will also be counted on by the Dodgers in this one. He has been incredible in his first full season in the league and could make a huge statement by playing well on this stage on Sunday.
