I mean c'mon, if you want Luxury go to one of the only 5 star approved places in the State. The White Barn Inn in K-Port. Bring about $1,000 a night though because that's what it will cost you.

and my two cents about OOB, with all due respect to Wayne...but a tad 'white trashy'...it can be hit or miss. We would go once a summer just to walk around the fair for a couple of hours and play ski ball in the arcade, but that was the extent of it.
Also, take a ride to Higgins Beach, great little beach area just south of Cape Elizabeth. I will let you know if I can think of anything else.

3J, I think you really need to think of who and what we are talking about here and that is Dimer. While those 2 places you mentioned staying in are EXTREMELY nice places, they are also very pricey and both are in a setting surrounded by a ton of "Older" people. Neither (imo) is a place Bryan and Kelly would have alot of fun at.

Dimer, if I could add my two cents. As you know, I ran an 84 room resort on the ocean in Maine for the last 2 yrs- The Black Point Inn. Great place (downsizing to 84 rooms) but probably a little pricey...well worth it in that it is one of only a couple of Inn's right on the ocean. Located 8 miles south of Portland and you can see OOB across the bay. Great sunset with Mt. Washington 90 miles away on a clear day. Very quaint and quiet now that they are downsizing. You can also try Inn by the Sea, halfway between BPI and Portland in Cape Elizabeth, which is very nice, mre family oriented. There is also the Colony in Kennebunkport.
As for dining, Portland has great restaurants. My wife and I love to go to great restaurants and we spent a lot of time in Portland at night, especially an area called the Old Port. Most of the better restaurants, you better make reservations 2-3 weeks in advance. Some of the better one's- Old Port Sea Grille (we would eat at the bar, excellent food and very good wine list), Fore Strret (widely recognized as the best restaurant in Portland), Street & Company (same Exec Chef as Fore Street, all seafood), Cinque Terra (Italian), Sapporo (sushi), Bintliffs (awesome Brunch), The Good Table (in Cape Elizabeth, very 'Maine' diner type brunch place with really good food), Natasha's (in the heart of the Old Port, excellent food), Ri Ra's (Irish Bar on the water that has very good bar food). DO NOT GO TO DiMillo's...everyone sends the tourists there as it is a floating boat, but the food is not good. Joe's Boathouse is another really nice place for Brunch.
Keep in mind, Portland is very casual and even in the best restaurants, jeans are fine and in many cases, the staff wears jeans. Wayne is right, Portland lacks a good steak house. There is one in the Regency Hotel (I forget the name) that has gotten decent reviews. Let me know if I cann help in any other way.
John

My wife and I were bumming around for a few days in New England a couple of years ago. We were in some Massachusetts burg over close to Cape Cod on a Friday night. We passed this little hole-in-the-wall place that had a full parking lot. We went in and got an awesome seafood dinner...lobster for $8 or some shit like that. We just got lucky that time. But local knowledge is very important.

Anyone got any ideas on where to stay for 2 nights (May 31 and June 1)? We'll probably rent a car and I'm having trouble finding a decent deal on a room close to Wrigley for those nights. Found a 3-star hotel that was 189 for the Thursday night but $549 for the Friday night!! must be something else going on in Chicago that night. Where are some good alternate areas to look for a decent place to stay at under $300 per night?
garth ... Wrigleyville is ridiculous with their prices ... I would look for something further out ..around O"hare Field and drive in ... $549 for a night stay ... ludicrous ...

Hey Bry, i was just thinking. You could also go to Kennebunk-Port and drive by George Sr's summer home. It isn't far away from there. Maybe George will be in town with the secret service.I've seen him in the drugstore there a couple of times. You could get his autograph! LMAO
