              • FYI:

-This was my "BIG GAME PLAY" with its indepth Write-Up and Big Game Analysis, I released today on "Super Tuesday".

"BIG GAME PLAY"--MLB GAME OF THE WEEK:

                Atlanta -168 (3-2 Ex-Inn Winner!)

-I have been waiting for this match-up for awhile now...One reason is because I feel that all season long these Nationals who surprised everyone when they took over the NL East lead over the Braves and Marlins...did it moreso by lucky breaks then by outstanding overall balanced play...Many of those wins they had in the first half of the season before the All Star break were won by only 1 run in very low scoring games, but so far in the 2nd half that trend has been doing a complete reversal and thus may be ripe for a Braves pickings in this series...Today and throughout this series the Braves should have a big advantage over the Nationals...but in this one I have found some very Key Advantages that makes this play qualify into another rare and patented "BGP" selection.

*Key Advantage #1: Smoltz is on Fire and Simply in Shutdown Mode right now...

The Braves Smoltz is again showing that he is one of the best all around pitchers to come out of the pen, in the Closers role, and also in this role as a starter for the Braves...He is simply on a tear right now winning a personal best 7 straight games and still looking for more...Just how balanced a pitcher he is, which makes him so much of a valuable asset to this team is that he is able to start and also close his own games...And has done just that 3 times already this year....He is the only pitcher who has been named to the All-Star team as a reliever and starter.

-Today, being able to go deep will be a big key to winning this one as his opponent Livan also has this ability...but he also has a solid Closer in Cordeiro waiting in the wings if needed....Smoltz, on the other hand, does have others to help him close games out...but they are not been as dominant and successful together as the Natl's Cordeiro has been this year...

Still, I am expecting Smoltz to take care of business by keeping this struggling Washington team in check like he has been doing to all others of late...In fact, Atlanta has won 9 of their last 10 games that Smoltz has started...and in these 10 games he record a solid 8-1 record...More currently, in Smoltz's last 3 starts he has gone 2-0 with an ERA of 2.45, WHIP of .91.

Currently, Smoltz is ranked 10th in the league with the lowest WHIP of 1.14.....14th in the league with the lowest BAA at .236.....Ranked 5th with the lowest ERA overall in the league at 2.64....Ranked 12th in the league with the most K's.....and 5th in the league with the most innings pitched at 146.1.

However, this one is at Home and that is where Smoltz has pitched his best games against some of the top teams in the league....In his 9 starts at home he has a record of 5-3 and has also record 3 complete games...His ERA at Home is a low 2.67, WHIP a low 1.14, and is allowing opponents to average just .240 hitting against him..

Smoltz's last 5 home games was all quality starts for him, which he went 4-1....Vs the Cubs, he led the Braves to a 9-4 Win...going 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 4 ERs, 1 HR, 3 walks, and 2 K's.......Vs Balt, he led the Braves to a 8-1 Win....going 9 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 walks, and 7 K's.....Vs Florida, he led the Braves to a 5-0 Win...going 9 innings, allowing just 5 hits, 0 ERs, 0 HRs, 2 walks, and 6 K's.......Vs Oak, he led them to a 5-3 Win....going 9 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 ERs, 0 HRs, 3 walks, and 4 K's......and Vs the Angels, he suffered his only defeat in this span losing 2-4....but went 8 innings, allowed 13 hits, 4 ERs, 0 HRs, 0 walks, and 5 K's in the loss....Solid!

Smoltz in his career vs Washington...he has played in 53 games with 26 starts...His record vs the Natl's is a solid 15-7, with 17 saves, and also 3 complete games also....In all these games he has only given up 9 total HRs, has an ERA of 2.44, WHIP of 1.06, and a low BAA of .217....Smoltz's only faced the Natl's one time this year which he won 5-4 at Washington....But, what should be noted is that when Smoltz and the Braves took on the Natl's he was entering with a record of just 3-4..and also was getting the lowest run support, with only 2.6 rpg of support, which was more than one run less than any other starters...In addition, during this start Atlanta was on a slide dropping 4 of their last 5 games and also lost 4 straight games Smoltz started as well....The National's at this time was on their run and had moved just 1 1/2 games behind NL leaders Atlanta and Florida...What is important to note about this start is the run support which he was lacking in his last 10 games before this game vs the Natl's....which totalled only 29 runs in this 10 game span that saw Atlanta go 4-6 in this span....But, in Smoltz's last 10 starts, since his last win over the Nationals...he has been on a tear, as mentioned above, winning 9 out of 10 games...but also more importantly, the Braves Offense was back on track as well, supporting him in all these starts with 54 runs or +5 runs per a game average heading into todays rematch...Oh Boy!

Other stats to be aware of that shows how dominant Smoltz's has been this year....Since his last lost on June 6th, he had an very low ERA of just 1.86 in his first 8 outings....And, if we look further back...Smoltz had goine 11-2 with an ERA of 2.28 in his last 18 starts...and he has also gone at least 8 innings deep in 6 of his past 9 games...In addition, Smoltz has pitched at least 6 innings in each of his last 11 starts...Which all combines to give his and overall season record on 11-5 with an ERA of 2.64, 3 complete games, including one shutout, in 21 starts so far on the year....Damn Solid!

Lastly, during this 7 game winning streak that he is currently on...Smoltzie has posted an ERA of 2.67 and a WHIP of just 1.02.....Again, damn Solid!

*Key Advantage #2: Livan currently off his game...

-Livan Hernandez, the Ace or the Nationals staff is coming into this game off of 3 straight losing starts, after he ran off 11 straight wins...In these last 3 games he went 2-0 and his ERA went up to 4.09 and WHIP 1.45...

In his 11 starts on the Road this year, he has a solid record of 6-1...going a combined 77 innings, allowing 86 hits, 6 HRs....and has an ERA of 3.49, WHIP of 1.47, but is allowing opponents to hit .293 against him...

Hernandez in his 18 career starts vs Atlanta has been dominated and hasnt found much success going 2-13 overall...with an ERA of 5.45, WHIP of 1.53, and a BAA of .279....He has also given up a total of 18 HRs as well in his games vs them....Can you say "Who's Your Daddy"!

One thing about Livan which surprizingly, he has been able to get out of is his tendency to pitch himself into alot of jams...loading bases, falling behind hitters, and allowing alot of hits...but as mentioned, he has been able to get out of these many jams in the first half of the season...but this seems to have caught up to him so far in the second....Livan, is not a dominating pitcher but more of a finess type of pitcher who will try to pick his spots against you....This however has lead to many of these jams..and also has lead to him leading the majors with an average of nearly 117 pitches per start...and has topped the 100-pitch mark in 19 of his 21 starts this year....This to me is what is catching up to him as the season goes on..and what has contributed to him currently ranking 8th in the league with the most Walks allowed with 54.....and also ranking 3rd in the league with the most Hits given up....This stats are not good considering that he is on a team whose offense is struggling to score runs.

Another thing that tells me that Livan may be off his game or losing control is the fact that in his last start, which ended in a loss to lowly Colorado...he set a franchise record by hitting 4 batters...making him the 1st NL pitcher to hit 4 batters since April of 2001..

Livan on a 3 game slide, pitching on an injured knee, getting only an average of just 2.7 rpg support, while he has given up 4 rpg in his last 3 starts...and must now pitch against a team who has owned him throughout his career and who also are playing with a bit of Revenge..not to mention, for sole possession of the NL East...definately puts him at a huge disadvantage today....I dont see him getting healthy or stopping his current slide against this Atlanta team who is a totally different animal at Home, and also when they make their run to another NL East Title, which they have owned for 13 straight years.

Sidenote: Livan has given up 5 HRs in his last 4 starts...after not giving up any HRs in his last 5 games.

*Key Advantage #3: Wash is still looking for an Offense.

The law of averages says that it's only a matter of time before your luck runs out...and the Nationals luck has done just that....In the first half, they were able to run off an amazing number of victories by 1 run...remarkably being involved in 32 one-run games....But, things are alittle different now in the 2nd half, as scoring less runs than they give up is now doing the opposite for them after the break...Since the All-Star break, everything from their already low runs per game to their batting averages kept taking a nosedive...As of Sunday, the Natl's have lost 5 of their last 7 games...and have posted a 8-12 record in July...but again, they cant blame it on their starting pitching...as Wash starters are a solid 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA in the month....

Washington has relied on this strong pitching and small-ball strategy to win games...However, they are finding out that they cant win games when you only average 2.8 rpg and hit just .219 since the break...They found this out the hard way in their last game vs the Astros, where they pitchers held the Hot Astros to just 1 run in 13 innings, before losing 4-1...In this game that went 14 innings, the Natl's Offense recorded just 1 run on 4 total hits...Sad!....In their last 10 games the Nationals as a team is hitting just .226.

Overall on the year, the National's Offense is plummetted to bottom of the rankings in almost every Offensive category....ie, They are ranked 2nd to last in team Batting average.....Last in Run production.....Last in Hits.....Last in HRs with only 70......Last in RBI's......3rd to last in SB.....7th to last in OBP......and Last in the league in SLG%.....Pathetic!
This offensive slump has been a big reason for the Nat’s recent woes...and it will continue as long as these players, at their manager Robinson put it, keep swinging for the fences, as opposed to trying to put the ball in play...

Sidenote: The Nationals have only scored more than 4 runs one time in their last 13 games...and just 3 times in their last 20 games....and 7 of those losses were by one run....Their luck has definately run out!

*Key Advantage #4: Braves at Home are a different team.

The Braves no doubt have been a way better productive and dominant team at Home then they have been on the Road....Their record at Home is currently 29-14, which is the 2nd best Home record in the league only behind the Astros, who has 2 more wins....The Nationals road record this year is currently 23-26...but have posted a 1-5 record in their last 6 road games...

Atlanta at Home is Offensively very productive...averaging 5.3 rpg, hitting .282 at the plate, and .349 OBP.....while their defense only allows opponents to average just 3.7 rpg, hit .251 at the plate, and .313 OBP....The Natl's, on the Road overall is averaging 4 rpg, .262 hitting, and .319 OBP....while their defense has given up 4.8 rpg, allowed .285 hitting, and .350 OBP on the year....But, in their last 6 Road games their average as mentioned above have fallen to just 2.8 rpg average, while they have allowed opponents to average 4 rpg.....The Braves, meanwhile, in their last 7 games at Home have continued to average their same amount of offensive production with alittle over 5 rpg, while also only allowing alittle over 3 rpg to opponents... and have recorded a 5-2 record in this span as well....Big Advantage at Home!

Sidenote: The Natl's only 3-5 this year and 16-30 the past 3 seasons as a Road Dog of +150 to +175.
Sidenote: The Braves are 23-10 as a Home Fav of -175 to -200 the last 33 games.

The way the Natl's are struggling right now on Offense..this is probably the worse time for them to be stopping in Atlanta...as this is definately a road trip that could make things alot worse for them, especially with both tied for the NL East....One thing to mention is the fact that when the Nationals went on their run in the first half, they also did it by winning the series in Atlanta, with a 8-6 victory in their last matchup on June 2nd...thus sparking their 10 game winning streak and that 23-5 run they went on that led to them controlling the NL East....Since then, the Nats has crumbled with 13 losses in their last 18 games, thus blowing a 5 1/2 game lead they had....

Although this series lost to the Nats was nearly 2 months ago...I dont believe the Braves have forgotten losing that series and probably have waited for this opportunity to expose the Natl's as the same Expos team of the past that doesnt belong challenging for this division title which they have owned for the last 13 years..

Atlanta has gone 22-12 since they fell within a game of .500 in mid-June...and they could have gone into this series with a couple games ahead of the Nationals...but they lost 7 of their last 12 games to sit even with Wash on top the division...Something inside me says that it was all planned this way as their is nothing better than to take back the lead from a team in your own house...Nonetheless, whether planned or not...the fact here is that after this series, the Natl's will be back below the Braves in the standings where they belong, and as Atlanta goes on another patented run to another division title...Home Cookin To Good!

                *Situational Edge:

-Braves right now are healthy again with the return of their big stick in the lineup in Chipper Jones...He hasnt yet gotten back in top form and only is 3-for-18 (.167) hitting since returning back from the DL....Still, with his earlier return back, he will definately have a better advantage of getting back to the speed of the game by taking 18 more plate appearances...then the Natl's big stick Johnson, who is scheduled to return to the lineup after his time on the DL.
                .
-Washington's continues to suffer injuries to Key players throughout the year..and they should be thankful for the fact that they had solid pitching which kept them from taking a nose dive after they went down....The Nationals' opening day starting infield - 1B Nick Johnson, 2B Jose Vidro, SS Cristian Guzman and 3B Vinny Castilla has not started a game together since May 4...And it seems that although Johnson should be back in the lineup tonight...Castilla is still ineffective due to his knee...and this return of one of their Big sticks on offense, just gets overshawdowed as they may have lost their Biggest stick in cleanup hitter Jose Guillen, will be out for this series after he was hit on the right wrist in their last game on Sunday...Guillen's abesence and Johnson's probable ineffectiveness in his 1st game back from the DL is not a good news for the Natls Offense tonight...especially as Guillen led them in Hits, HRs, and RBIs...No way Johnson can make up the difference... This Injury situation gives the Braves a Huge advantage tonight...

-Livan's Hernandez is not a happy player right now...and it has to due in part to his knee giving him problems...which starts feeling even more bad when he doesnt even get the run support when he takes the hill and is pitching all out...His third loss against the lowly Rockies was probably the straw that broke the camels back as he pitched solidly but they still lost 3-2 in the process...I had a feeling also that things would probably catch up to him as he is being dependant upon to pitch deep into the game on every start...and he already goes way over 100 pitch count each time...yet, its like a waste of time when he doesnt get the run support needed to continue winning...and this frustrates him alot....When asked to explain why, Hernandez said: "I'm tired of something. I'll tell you when the season's over. I'm mad."

*Stats, Trends, and Info favoring Atlanta:

-WAS is 2-5 in their last seven on the road.
                - ATL is 9-1 in Smoltz's last 10 starts.
-ATL is 10-3 in thier last 13 at home
-ATL is 30-17 vs WAS the last 3 seasons and 14-8 at Home during this span.
-Since 1997, Smoltz vs Wash is 6-0 with an ERA of 1.58 and WHIP of .846.
-ATL hitting .241 vs RHPs in their last 10 games vs them...but .290 at Home vs RHPs..
-WAS hitting .239 vs RHPs in their last 10 games (havent faced Smoltz yet) and .256 on the Road vs them.
-WAS BP in their last 3 games has an ERA of 5.18.
-ATL's BP in their last 3 games has an ERA of 3.45.

Bottom line here is the Braves has the better starter in Smoltz, better hitting, speed, defense , and bench.....only areas the Nationals have an advantage is in the bullpen...But with the ability of Smoltz to take it deep and complete the game it negates this....With that and everything else mentioned above I like the Braves as a "BIG GAME PLAY"--GAME OF THE WEEK selection today.... Good luck and LETS GOT GET EM...ALOHA CC.

*please disregard any typos and grammatical errors as I had no time to edit this book..thxs.

-Ok Gang...as some know, I hate it when lack of time leaves me to post a play by itself...I want everyone who follows my plays to at least see something about why I like it, so that you know that I have done my work on it and that I am not just releasing a play to meet the requirements to post here...All plays are actual plays off my Card released and played by me...So heres some info on this one.

-Now I know that the Yankees always look like a steal whenever they are priced under -150 ...but I like these reasons that tell me this price is a steal instead...

                          1. Mussina is the only Yankee starters who deserves to be trusted...He's the Ace of this team, and he can go deep which is important with all the Bullpen problems the Yanks have...All the Moose needs to do is go 7 innings..and then give it up....However, I like it if he went 8 before handing it off to Rivera...and we could actually see this happen with this one game being important for the Yanks to get...Plus, with the way that he has pitched against the Indians, its a good possiblity that he could cruise through this lineup...even if they are hitting over .300 vs RHPs their last 10 games...

Sidenote: Mussina has gone at least 6 innings in each of his last 11 starts and, in that time, has allowed more than 3 runs just 4 times.

Sidenote: Mussina is also 5-2 in his Road starts this year...2-0 in his last 5 road starts...but has led the Yanks to go 4-1 in this 5 games on the Road when he started...Only losing that one at Texas which was not his doing, as he shut out that potent Ranger lineup in that one...

-Mussina in his last 3 starts has an ERA of 1.77 and WHIP of 1.181...And although he hasnt won all 3, it is not his fault but moreso the Yanks offense not giving him the support....But, as we all know, this All-Star lineup is not one to easily hold down....Furthermore, Mussina since 1997 has dominated the Indians going 7-1 with an ERA of 3.26 and WHIP of 1.024....Today, he has a good chance again to hold this team in check like he did in his last time vs Clev, where he held them to just surrender 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts over 7 strong innings of a 7-2 Yankee victory....

                          2. Cleveland sends Lefty Lee to the hill...and this is where I see the Yankees being able to get to him like they have done throughout his career...and most currently at Yankee stadium, where Lee was tagged for 5 runs on just 6 hits in 6 innings....Overall in his career he is 0-2 vs the Yanks..and has a whopping ERA of 9.22 ERA, WHIP of 1.829, and allow the Yanks to hit .315 off of him, in his 3 career starts vs them....Nothing tells me that the 4th start will be any different, even if he has gone 2-0 in his last 3 starts for the Indians....One thing you cant overlook is that in this span, his ERA is still 4.26.

Sidenote: Lee this year is allowing LHBs to average .307 off of him overall....Today he will have to face a Yankee lineup that is full of LHB's in Posada .299 vs LHPs, Cano .289 vs LHPs, Giambi 6 HRs off LHPs, Martinez 3 HRs off LHPs, and Matsui hitting .346 vs LHPs...And those Yanks that are RHBs...thats only A-Rod who is hitting .319 vs LHPs, Sheffield hitting .370 and 9 HRs vs LHPs, and Jetter hitting .256 vs LHPs but with 4 HRs and also is 4th overall in batting avg....Not Good!

-As mentioned, Lee already is allowing the Yanks to hit .315 against him....and in his 8 Home games this year, he has given up 6 HRs..

Sidenote: The Yanks vs LHPs overall on the year...is averaging 5.5 rpg, hitting .285 at the plate, and .352 OBP..

*Other Stats and Info: favoring the Yanks.

-Clev is just 5-11 this year in games played on Weds....This is important to note as the the Indians seem to not like playing on Weds, and this game also is for their 3rd straight win...something they havent done in about a month.
-Clev is also only 3-9 vs teams with winning records in the 2nd half of the season....This stat also ties into the that failure to put 3 consecutive wins together on a consistant basis.
-Lastly, that Clev BP is not at all on their game of late with an ERA over 5 in their last 3 games...Cant give the Yanks anymore opportunities than they need.

*That should be enough, to back this one up...I like the low number and I like the pitching of Mussina, who is the Yanks "ACE", this year.....The Yanks get this one at Jacobs field where they dominate as well..(Yanks 33-19 in the regular season at Jacobs park since it opened in 1994)
