      • Friday's Tip Sheet

        February 20, 2014

Pelicans at Bobcats - 7:05 PM EST

New Orleans: 23-30 SU, 23-27-3 ATS
        Charlotte: 25-30 SU, 31-22-2 ATS

The Bobcats are quietly playing well of late and making a push towards the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte pulled off a home-and-home sweep of Detroit, winning both games by double-digits, including Wednesday's 116-98 rout as 2 ½-point favorites. The Bobcats have covered seven of their past nine games, including each of the last three at Time Warner Cable Arena. Steve Clifford's club is playing with revenge on Friday, as the Bobcats were run out by the Pelicans back in November, 105-84.

The Pelicans fell apart late in Wednesday's home setback to the Knicks, the third loss in the last four games. New Orleans has held its own of late on the highway, winning four of its past seven road contests, including outright underdog victories at Detroit, Cleveland, and Memphis. Monty Williams' team has fared well on the road off a home loss this season, posting a 4-2 SU/ATS record in this situation.

Cavaliers at Raptors - 7:05 PM EST

        Cleveland: 22-33 SU, 25-30 ATS
        Toronto: 29-25 SU, 32-21-1 ATS

All of the sudden, the Cavaliers have turned the corner, winning and covering six consecutive games following a six-game skid. Cleveland has beaten only one above .500 team in this stretch (Memphis), but the Cavs are taking care of their business on the road with three straight victories on the highway. Mike Brown's club picked up wins on back-to-back nights against the 76ers and Magic, while limiting each of their last five opponents to 99 points or less.

The Raptors saw their three-game winning streak evaporate in Wednesday's two-point setback to the Bulls. Since winning six in a row at home, Toronto is just 4-3 SU and 3-3-1 ATS the last seven games at the Air Canada Center, which includes losses to the Clippers and Lakers. Toronto and Cleveland are meeting for the first time this season, as the two teams split four matchups last season, while the 'under' cashed three times.

Clippers at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 37-19 SU, 31-25 ATS
        Memphis: 30-23 SU, 24-28-1 ATS

The Clippers embark on a three-game road trip that starts at FedEx Forum in a rematch of last season's first round playoff series with the Grizzlies. After dropping the first two games, Memphis roared back to win four straight and ultimately advance to the Western Conference Finals. This season, the road team has claimed each of the first two meetings, with the Clippers dominating the Grizzlies, 101-81 on December 5 as short away favorites.

Los Angeles will try to rebound after getting chased by San Antonio in Tuesday's 113-103 home defeat, the fifth 'over' in the last six games for the Clippers. Doc Rivers' defense has been ripped up of late, allowing at least 105 points in five of the past six contests, while losing each of their previous two road games at Denver and Golden State. Memphis is riding a three-game hot streak after holding off New York on Tuesday, 98-93, but the Grizzlies are just 2-5 ATS the last seven contests. In the role of a home underdog, the Grizzlies own a 2-6 ATS mark, with the only straight-up victory coming against the Rockets last month.

Spurs at Suns - 9:05 PM EST

San Antonio: 40-15 SU, 27-28 ATS
        Phoenix: 32-21 SU, 35-17 ATS

The Spurs wrap up their annual Rodeo Road Trip, which spans nearly three weeks every February. San Antonio hasn't disappointing, putting together a 6-2 ATS and 5-3 SU record on this nine-game swing, which includes impressive victories over the Clippers and Blazers in the underdog role. Tony Parker remains out for the Spurs, while Tim Duncan will return as the veteran forward missed Wednesday's win at Portland.

The Suns continue to be one of the huge surprises in the NBA this season, but Phoenix still hasn't figured out how to beat San Antonio. In two meetings this season, the Suns have lost by a combined 10 points, including a 108-101 home setback in mid-December, the fourth consecutive home loss to the Spurs since 2012. Jeff Hornacek's team has split their last six games at U.S. Airways Center, but the Suns have won seven of their past 10 home contests against Western Conference competition.

          • Fact or Fiction

            February 21, 2014

Up until this point in the season, there was no certainty as to who was going to be on any roster on any given night. Now that the trade deadline has come and gone, we know what those rosters are going to look like for the rest of the campaign. Today, we'll look at the truths and the untruths for NBA betting fans about the deadline which just passed.

            FACT

Andre Miller Makes the Washington Wizards the Third Best Team in the East: Miller fell out of favor with the Denver Nuggets, and he really had to be traded at the deadline. Miller went to Washington in exchange for very little, and if he brings his “A” game, he very well could be the difference maker this year for Washington. The road is clear to get to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and don't think for one second that the familiarity the Wizards have with the Miami Heat make it totally impossible to make that a series if that's what it comes down to. Washington could be a force to be reckoned with.

The Los Angeles Lakers Were the Deadline's Biggest Losers: Sometimes it's about what you do. Sometimes it's about what you don't do. The Lakers had to move F Pau Gasol at the deadline, even if they only got a second round pick back for his services. Instead, what's left is a man that isn't going to be tendered in the offseason anyway in all likelihood, and even if he is, that's probably going to be as devastating of a deal as the Kobe Bryant deal was for the franchise. These Lakers just don't get it right now, and they are going to ultimately pay the price by being one of the lousier teams in the league for the next few seasons as a result.

The Cleveland Cavaliers Have No Clue What They're Doing: That's about right. If the Lakers were the worst losers of the West, the Cavs take that title in the East. They traded away a couple second round picks to get C Spencer Hawes. Now, though they are probably going to end up taking one of the last couple playoff spots in the East this year, this clearly isn't going to be the key to getting this franchise back to the top of the East. Instead, at the end of the year, Hawes and Luol Deng will both be gone, and Kyrie Irving probably isn't going to be all that far behind either. Trading assets for expendable players who are going to be gone at the end of the year isn't the key to success in this league for teams who aren't close to challenging.

            FICTION

The Indiana Pacers Made Themselves Better By Picking Up Evan Turner: We just don't get it. Trading Danny Granger was something which could have easily been done, but what came back was supposed to really help out immediately. We fail to see where Turner really fits in here. Lance Stephenson has clearly locked down the starting shooting guard spot, and Turner's productivity has mostly come because of the amount of minutes which he played for the Philadelphia 76ers. We just don't see him doing that in Indiana with a much slower-paced team.

The 76ers Were Big Losers at the Deadline: Actually, the Sixers were the biggest winners as we see it. They probably aren't going to catch the Milwaukee Bucks for the most Ping-Pong balls in the NBA Draft lottery, but they're going to make sure they have the second most balls in the quest to get the #1 pick in the best looking NBA Draft in years. There is a great chance now to have four picks in the Top 40, including perhaps two picks in the Top 10. Evan Turner probably wasn't coming back to the team next year anyway, and neither was Spencer Hawes. The fact of the matter is that Danny Granger is probably going to be bought out, and that's fine as well. The Sixers are basically at the salary floor, they aren't going to be competitive this year anyway, and they have the big time assets there to reanimate the entire team in 2014-15.

The Kings Made the Right Moves By Holding Their Best Assets: Sacramento is in a tough spot right now. It isn't going to even remotely get into the playoffs this year, and it is trying to build a team that was warranted by staying in town instead of moving to Seattle. Here's the issue: We don't think that the Kings are really all that close. They do have some good players, but Rudy Gay is a liability because of his contract, and it probably prevents the team from resigning Isaiah Thomas in the offseason. Gay could have possibly been moved at the deadline, as could have Thomas. Instead, the Kings elected to trade for Jason Terry, which just doesn't seem to make all that much sense. It's not that particular move that bothers us. Instead, it's that Sacramento decided to just hold pat with everything else it had. It might make the team a little better now, but in the end, we wish the Kings would have either taken a big stance as buyers or sellers and not be stuck in limbo.

-- Rams' owner Stan Kroenke owns 740,000 acres of land, 10th most of anyone in the country; he is the 2nd-wealthiest NFL owner.

-- The first KFC opened back in 1952. In Salt Lake City.

-- Barry Bonds is a hitting instructor in Giants' spring training; curious to see how that works out.

-- Dan Marino/Shannon Sharpe are off CBS' NFL pregame show next fall; they had too many voices on set. Sometimes less is more.

-- Sergio Garcia conceded a 17-foot putt on Friday, then missed couple of 5-footers later on that would've beaten Ricky Fowler. Something tells me Sergio had somewhere else to be Saturday and Sunday.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday....

                        13) Duke 66, Syracuse 60-- Coaches preach poise to their players; well, coaches need to have poise too. When a bad call goes against you in a 60-58 game with 0:10 left, you don't have a childish meltdown and get thrown out of a game your kids still had a chance to win.

Syracuse played one true road game before New Year's and that was in New York City, where they have a ton of fans. Maybe if Orange played a road game now and then in pre-conference, they'd have more poise now.

                        12) Boise State 91, UNLV 90 ot-- Refs used replay to change a call, negating a Rebel basket at the buzzer. i watched the replay five times and could not tell which call was right. In that case, the call on the floor (good basket) is supposed to stand. It helps to be at home, I guess.

When UNLV coach Dave Rice was informed his team lost (got hosed), he did not act like a 4-year old who didn't get his ice cream. Classy guy.

                        11) Oklahoma State 84, Texas Tech 62-- Marcus Smart had 16 points, 10 rebounds as he returned from suspension and helped Cowboys end their skid at seven games. Bracketologists still have them in the field of 68.

                        10) Louisville 58, Cincinnati 57-- Russ Smith hit a jumper with 0:02.2 left to win this tense struggle, avenging an earlier home loss to the Bearcats. This was a lot like a tournament game.

                        9) Kentucky 77, LSU 76 ot-- Terrific game; LSU lost in part because their best player Johnny O'Bryant got really tired at the end-- he was 8-25 from the floor. Tigers are banged up, don't have much depth. Kentucky was 1-9 on the arc, still won, avenging an earlier loss in Baton Rouge.

                        8) Georgia State 80, UL-Lafayette 77-- Ragin' Cajuns had won six games in a row; they led by nine in second half, but 20-7 Georgia State had a 21-0 run to pull out their 20th win of the year. Sun Belt tourney is going to be good.

                        7) Wisconsin 79, Iowa 74-- Badgers started season 16-0, then lost five of six games, now has won five in a row. Even the good teans are fragile.

                        6) Florida 75, Ole Miss 71-- Marshall Henderson had 22 points in first half, zero in second half. Florida is now 14-0 in the SEC.

                        5) Ohio State 64, Minnesota 46-- Gophers were up 28-18 at half, then the second half happened. ESPN's Joe Lunardi had Minnesota as an 11-seed in NCAAs before this game- they're 4-8 in their last dozen games- their next two games are Iowa/Michigan. Good luck.

                        4) Miami 69, Boston College 42-- Eagles followed up win at Syracuse by getting bludgeoned by the 14-13 Hurricanes, who had lost six of previous eight games coming in. BC has to hire Bruce Pearl this spring.

                        3) New Mexico 58, San Diego State 44-- Lobos had huge week, winning big at UNLV, then dismissing Aztecs here. Teams meet again at Viejas March 8, and will probably play the next week in Vegas at the conference tourney.

                        2) Biggest upset of the day: Rhode Island 87 (+11) , St Bonaventure 78-- Rams snapped a 6-game losing streak with road win here.

                        1) Bad beat of the day: Syracuse (+6). Game ended in a push, but a lousy call nullified the tying hoop for Orange, then Boeheim went postal, got two technicals and Syracuse backers went fortunate to get the push.

I mean, you had a dog getting six points down 2 with the ball with 0:12 left, the game didn't go OT and you didn't win. Doesn't happen much.
