        February 25, 2014

Warriors at Bulls - 8:05 PM EST

Golden State: 35-22 SU, 27-27-3 ATS
        Chicago: 30-26 SU, 28-28 ATS

The Warriors continue their six-game road swing on Wednesday, as Golden State looks for its fifth consecutive victory. Mark Jackson's club knocked off the Pistons on Monday as 3 ½-point favorites, 104-96 to remain undefeated since the All-Star break, while limiting each of their last four opponents to below 99 points. The Warriors overcame an early 16-point deficit the last time they faced the Bulls back on February 6 to rally for a 102-87 home triumph as six-point favorites.

The Bulls have won nine of their last 10 home matchups with Golden State, while holding the Warriors to 91 points or below eight times. Chicago is riding a four-game SU/ATS winning streak when playing without rest, as the Bulls are coming off Tuesday's victory at Atlanta. The Bulls have won three in a row at the United Center, with all three victories coming by double-digits, but Chicago has dropped each of its last two games in the role of a home underdog.

Suns at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST

        Phoenix: 33-23 SU, 36-19-1 ATS
        Utah: 20-36 SU, 25-28-3 ATS

The Suns and Jazz meet for the final time in the regular season as Utah goes for the series split. Following a pair of victories by Phoenix in November, the Jazz stunned the Suns right after Thanksgiving in the Valley, 112-104 to cash outright as 8 ½-point underdogs. Utah snapped a three-game skid in Monday's blowout of Boston, but the Jazz has lost and failed to cover in three of their last four opportunities as a home underdog.

Phoenix will be playing on no rest following Tuesday's home defeat to Minnesota, as Wednesday's game is the lone road venture for the Suns in a nine-game span. Jeff Hornacek's team has fared well on the second of a back-to-back, posting a 7-2 SU/ATS record since losing at home to Utah in late November. In the role of a road favorite, the Suns have shined with a 4-1 SU/ATS record, while scoring at least 112 points in all four wins in this situation.

Nets at Blazers - 10:05 PM EST

        Brooklyn: 26-28 SU, 27-27 ATS
        Portland: 39-18 SU, 31-26 ATS

The Blazers continue to play without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who is suffering from a groin injury. Portland owns a 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS record with Aldridge out, as the Blazers go for the season sweep of the Nets. The previous matchup between these two teams came back in November at the Barclays Center, as Portland cruised past Brooklyn, 108-98, as the Blazers played with no rest. Terry Stotts' club is in that rest situation again following Tuesday's win at Denver, as Portland is just 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS the last four games on the second of a back-to-back after beginning the season 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS the first 11 opportunities in this scenario.

The Nets look to capitalize off Sunday's road favorite triumph over the Lakers, as Brooklyn has now alternated wins and losses in each of its last five trips to the court. Jason Kidd's team has lost each of their past three games as an away underdog, while scoring 96 points or fewer in eight of their previous nine opportunities in the road 'dog role. The Nets have taken care of business against unrested clubs since December, posting a 6-1 SU/ATS record when facing teams on the second of a back-to-back.

Rockets at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

        Houston: 39-18 SU, 30-25-2 ATS
Los Angeles: 39-20 SU, 33-26 ATS

Both teams are on the verge of 40 victories, as the Rockets wrap up a five-game West Coast swing. Houston heads to Southern California after Tuesday's blowout of Sacramento, as the Rockets have won nine of their past 10 games. Kevin McHale's team is listed as a road underdog for the first time since a January 29 victory at Dallas, a game played without top scorer James Harden. Houston's offense continues to scorch opponents by eclipsing the 101-point mark in eight of the last nine games, but that has resulted in only five 'overs.'

The Clippers return home following consecutive victories at Oklahoma City and New Orleans, as Los Angeles has now drilled the 'over' in eight of the past nine games. Los Angeles has given up at least 105 points in eight of the last nine, while allowing at least 113 points in each of its past two home contests against Portland and San Antonio. This season, the Clips have beaten the Rockets twice, with both meetings coming back in November. The last time Houston invaded Staples Center on November 4, the Rockets gave up a whooping 137 points, the second-most scored in regulation by a team this season.

Game of the Day: Knicks at Heat
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (-10, 202)

LeBron James and Raymond Felton are both expected to be on the court when the New York Knicks visit the Miami Heat on Thursday. James missed Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bulls after suffering a broken nose in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder last week and will play with a protective mask. Felton was arrested in New York on Tuesday on gun charges after his wife turned in an unregistered loaded firearm to the police.

Felton’s legal troubles are the last thing the Knicks need as they try to bust out of their latest lengthy slump. Carmelo Anthony is averaging 35.7 points the last 10 games but New York is just 2-8 in that span and inconsistent production from Felton and the rest of the guard rotation is one reason for the drought. The Heat have won five straight and are 11-2 in their last 13 games while making a move toward the top spot in the Eastern Conference, where the Indiana Pacers enjoy a two-game lead.

            TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Miami opened as high as -10.5 and is now at -10. The total opened at 202 points.

            POWER RANKINGS: Knicks (-3.8) - Heat (-14.5) + Home court (-3.0) = Heat -13.7

INJURY WATCH: Knicks - Carmelo Anthony (Prob. Personal), Raymond Felton (Prob. Disciplinary). Miami - LeBron James (Prob. - Nose).

ABOUT THE KNICKS (21-36 SU, 24-33 ATS, 32-25 O/U): Felton was back at practice on Wednesday and had little to say about the incident or his impending court date. “This is not a distraction to this team,” Felton told reporters. “I’m focusing on finishing out this season, finishing out these games with my teammates.” Felton managed eight points and seven assists while Anthony had his third outing of 40 or more points in the last four games only to have New York drop a 110-108 decision at home to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday when Dirk Nowitzki’s last-second shot bounced around the rim and fell through.

ABOUT THE HEAT (40-14 SU, 25-28-1 ATS, 31-23 O?U): James tested out his new mask as a full participant in practice on Wednesday and made it through the contact drills with no issues. “It’s still uncomfortable, but I still have to wear it,” James told reporters of the mask. “It gets hot under there, and it fogs up, but I’ve worn one before. I’ve been hit, but it lessens the impact.” James was on fire before suffering the broken nose and is averaging 37 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists in the last four games.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Miami.
            * Under is 13-4-1 in the last 18 meetings.
            * Favorite is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
            * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

CONSENSUS: 59 percent of bets are on Miami -10.

Zombie Team: Trip East could raise Jazz from the dead
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes in sports betting, a team can be so bad that the market severely discounts its odds and it actually becomes a good bet. We call those “Zombie Teams”.

Each week, we unleash our favorite “Zombie Team” on the bookies, explaining just how these terrible teams have come back from the betting dead and are biting books with hidden value.

This week’s Zombie Team: Utah Jazz (20-36 SU, 25-28-3 ATS)

Being bad in the Western Conference should come with an asterisk next to your record. The Jazz sit at the bottom of the Northwest Division with just 20 wins, but go through the gauntlet every week against quality Western rivals.

If Utah was in the East, 20 wins would have it in the playoff race – and it would likely have more than 20 wins if the Jazz were going up against the weaker conference more often than not. NBA bettors can put that theory to the test this week when the Jazz hit the road for a six-game Eastern Conference trip, starting in Cleveland Friday night.

The Jazz have already begun to show “Zombie Team” potential, covering in two of their last three games before Wednesday’s home date with the Phoenix Suns. Utah is 8-11-1 ATS versus Eastern Conference opposition this season and will have underdog status in just about every stop on this trip – save for Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

Utah gets a Cavaliers team with its star player planning his escape, the Pacers playing the second of a back-to-back after a traveling from Boston, the Bucks (who are actually a Zombie Team on the way out), the Wizards without their top interior defender, the Knicks quitting on their head coach, and finally the 76ers, who are home underdogs to the Magic Tuesday - Nuff said.

Despite their current place in the standings, the Jazz are still working hard and having fun. Rookie center Rudy Gobert was recently razzed by his teammate with the ole’ popcorn in the car prank and leading scorer Gordon Hayward is putting in extra time to get his shot back on track after some struggles from the floor. Utah was also one of the teams mentioned frequently in trade deadline talks but now that all those rumors are over, the players can focus on the home stretch of the season.

A chance to get away from Salt Lake City and the grind of the Western Conference schedule could breathe new life into the Jazz and have this potential “Zombie Team” rising from the dead when it comes to covering the spread.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heat's revived defense could open the door for NBA Unders
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defense wins championships, and if that’s the case then we may as well give the Miami Heat their third straight Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Miami is locking it down on defense following the All-Star break, a practice that’s becoming the norm for this dynasty in the making. Miami has allowed just 81 and 79 points in wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls respectively, playing Under the total in both contests.

"We're starting to put it together defensively,'' forward Chris Bosh told reporters following Sunday’s 93-79 win over the Bulls. ''We got off to a slow start early in the season, but I think right now we're starting to get it, starting to click.''

This recent swing in defensive intensity and Miami’s renewed focus, could give added value to the Under in the Heat’s upcoming contests. And with games against three of the league’s worst offensive teams - Knicks, Magic, and Bobcats - perhaps the Under has a better than average chance of continuing its run.

As mentioned, these performances have some precedent. The Heat allowed more than 96 points only twice in the 10 games following the All-Star break last season with the O/U going 4-5-1. The season prior, the Under paid out in seven of the 10 games post Valentine’s Day (there was no All-Star Game in the strike-shortened season) with Miami allowing just 90 points per game in that span.

During that 2011-12 season, the Heat were especially hungry after losing the NBA title the previous spring. The result was a defense that allowed just 92.5 points per game and boasted a 25-39-2 Over/Under record. Last year, the Heat were in the midst of their 27-game winning streak following the All-Star Game, laying waste to pretty much anyone who stepped in front of them.

This year, it seems the experienced Heat were taking it easy in the first half of the schedule. They currently sit second in the Eastern Conference, two games back of the Indiana Pacers, and are allowing over 98 points per game while averaging 104.1 themselves. That’s led to a 31-23 O/U record through 54 games - a trend that could be flipped on its ear if Miami finds it championship form in the home stretch of the season.

The Heat host the New York Knicks Thursday night. The early odds in Las Vegas have the suggested total at 202 points. The Under has been the smart play when these teams meet, going 4-13-1 Over/Under in their previous 18 encounters.

Pistons bad beat of the Spurs had bettors shocked

The Detroit Pistons were already out of the game when Peyton Siva drained a meaningless three with five seconds left in the game. However, that meaningless three meant that the Pistons covered the 10.5-point spread by a half-point.

Siva only played in the final 40 seconds of the game for the Pistons and drained his only field goal attempt.

The last-second cover means the Pistons are now a perfect 3-0 ATS when they are double-digit dogs this season.

LeBron James, Miami Heat - Prob Thurs

Miami Heat forward LeBron James suffered a broken nose February 20th against the Thunder and has not played since. He was a full participant in practice Wednesday, wearing a protective mask, and is expected to play Thursday against the Knicks.

Anthony Davis, New Orleans - day-to-day

Davis left Wednesday's game against the Mavericks due to a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

Pacers and Bucks have biggest spread all season

The Indiana Pacers and the Milwaukee Bucks will both be facing the largest spread of the NBA season when they face-off Thursday.

The Pacers have opened at 15.5 home favorites against the lowly Bucks Thursday.

Wizards have not been able to cover in Toronto

The Washington Wizards have been a phenomenal road play against the spread this season, but they still struggle when they visit Toronto. In the past seven visits to Toronto the Wizards are 1-6 ATS.

The Wizards opened as a 5.5-point road dog for their game against the Raptors Thursday.

                  • Thursday's Tips

                    February 26, 2014

Bucks at Pacers - 7:05 PM EST

                    Milwaukee: 11-45 SU, 23-33 ATS
                    Indiana: 43-13 SU, 33-22-1 ATS

The Bucks are playing better, in spite of owning the league's worst record. Milwaukee is coming off a 20-point blowout of Philadelphia on Monday, improving to 8-2 ATS the last 10 games. Larry Drew's club has allowed at least 100 points in eight straight contests, including Saturday's 110-100 home defeat to the Pacers. Milwaukee has hit the 'over' in three of the last four away contests, while posting a 3-1 ATS record in the past four highway ventures as double-digit underdogs.

The Pacers overcame a slow start in Monday's rout of the Lakers, 118-98 as 13 ½-point favorites. Indiana is just 2-5-1 ATS the last eight contests, but Frank Vogel's team has compiled a 4-1 SU/ATS home record against division foes. The Pacers have fared well as a home favorite of at least nine points since mid-January, posting a 7-3-1 ATS mark, while limiting six of the last eight opponents at home to 98 points or less.

Wizards at Raptors - 7:05 PM EST

                    Washington: 29-28 SU, 31-25-1 ATS
                    Toronto: 32-25 SU, 34-22-1 ATS

The Raptors have owned the Wizards this season by beating Washington three times. The last two victories came at the Verizon Center, including a 103-93 triumph on February 18 as 2 ½-point underdogs. Since that defeat, the Wizards have won four consecutive games, although all four victories came against teams currently below .500 (Magic, Pelicans, Cavaliers, and Hawks). Since December, Washington has covered a remarkable 15 of 18 games on the highway, including six in a row.

Toronto has won six of its last seven games, while limiting its past six opponents to 94 points or fewer. Dwane Casey's club is 5-1 SU and 3-2-1 ATS the previous six games at the Air Canada Center, while winning nine of the past 10 home contests against Eastern Conference foes. The Raptors and Wizards have finished 'under' the total in seven of the last eight meetings, including four in a row at the ACC.

Knicks at Heat - 8:05 PM EST

New York: 21-36 SU, 24-33 ATS
                    Miami: 40-14 SU, 25-28-1 ATS

Things have officially fallen apart for New York's basketball team, as the Knicks have lost nine of their last 11 contests to fall 15 games below .500. New York found a way to cover as 2 ½-point home underdogs in Monday's buzzer-beating loss to Dallas, as Mike Woodson's team is 4-7 ATS since the start of February. The Knicks have split two meetings with the Heat this season, as Miami won at Madison Square Garden, 106-91 as 4 ½-point favorites on February 1.

LeBron James is expected to return to the Heat lineup after suffering a nose injury in last Thursday's blowout of the Thunder. Miami did quite alright without its MVP in Sunday's 93-79 win over Chicago as five-point favorites, the fifth victory in a row and the eighth in nine games in the month of February. Erik Spoelstra's team has covered four of their past five games as double-digit favorites dating back to December, but the Heat lost both home meetings with the Knicks last season.

Nets at Nuggets - 10:35 PM EST

                    Brooklyn: 26-29 SU, 27-28 ATS
                    Denver: 25-31 SU, 23-33 ATS

The Nets play the sixth of a seven-game road swing on Thursday, as Brooklyn heads to Denver with no rest. Jason Kidd's team owns a dreadful 3-10 SU and 6-7 ATS record on the second of a back-to-back, coming off Wednesday's blowout loss at Portland. The Nets were blown out by the Nuggets at home in December, 111-87, but that was a different Denver team than what is currently taking the court.

Brian Shaw's club has won just five of their past 18 games, while allowing at least 100 points in 18 of the last 20 contests. The Nuggets haven't lost three successive home games this season, while going 3-0 at the Pepsi Center off a pair of home defeats. Denver has burned bettors over the last month, covering just once in the last 10 games, including a 1-6 ATS record at home. The Nuggets have had success at home against the Nets recently, winning each of the past six meetings at Pepsi Center since 2008.
