            Wednesday Tips

            February 4, 2014

Spurs at Wizards - 7:05 PM EST

San Antonio: 35-13 SU, 23-25 ATS
            Washington: 24-23 SU, 26-21 ATS

The Wizards are in unfamiliar territory, finally busting the .500 mark following consecutive home wins over the Thunder and Blazers. Washington will try for its third straight victory on Wednesday as San Antonio continues its Rodeo Trip. Randy Wittman's club is facing its seventh consecutive team from the Western Conference, as the Wizards are holding their own by covering in five of the past six games. However, Washington is playing with revenge after falling at San Antonio in November, 92-79, the 15th straight loss to the Spurs dating back to 2005.

The Spurs put together an impressive rally to overcome a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to stun the Pelicans on Monday, 102-95 as 3 ½-point road favorites. San Antonio improved to 17-5 on the highway, while posting a 9-4 ATS record in the last 13 away games in the favorite role. The defense has tightened up for the Spurs since getting blown out at Miami on January 26, as San Antonio has limited each of its last four opponents to 97 points or less (3-1 to the 'under').

Blazers at Knicks - 8:05 PM EST

            Portland: 34-14 SU, 25-23 ATS
New York: 19-29 SU, 20-28 ATS

Portland has cooled off since a 24-5 start, going 10-9 the last 19 contests. The Blazers are still in a prime position to be a top-four team in the Western Conference, but Terry Stotts' squad has lost four consecutive road games after Monday's defeat at Washington. To make matters worse for the Blazers, they have put together a 1-7 ATS record the last eight games, while allowing at least 100 points in nine of the past 10 contests.

The Knicks have turned into one of the streakiest teams in the league, winning five straight, then losing five in a row, followed by another four-game winning streak (all in January). February has started slowly for New York, dropping back-to-back contests to Miami and Milwaukee, as the Knicks handed the Bucks just their ninth win of the season in a 101-98 setback on Tuesday. The last time the Knicks and Blazers hooked up at the Moda Center in November, Portland picked up a 102-91 victory as seven-point favorites, the third straight win by the Blazers in the series.

Mavericks at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

            Dallas: 28-21 SU, 27-22 ATS
            Memphis: 26-21 SU, 22-24-1 ATS

The Mavs hit the highway following a successful 3-1 SU/ATS homestand, capped off by a 124-107 beatdown of the Cavaliers. Dallas goes for its third victory over Memphis this season, as the Mavs beat the Grizzlies twice already at home by double-digits. Rick Carlisle's club is scoring points at a monster pace, hitting the 'over' in seven of the last 10 games, while compiling an impressive 9-2 ATS mark the last 11 away contests.

The Grizzlies lost for just the second time since Marc Gasol's return to the lineup in Monday's 86-77 defeat at Oklahoma City. Memphis owns a solid 9-2 SU/ATS record since the center has come back, while the 'under' has cashed an incredible 10 times in this stretch. The Grizzlies struggled to start the season at FedEx Forum, but they has roared back at home with wins in six of their last seven opportunities, including victories over the Thunder, Rockets, and Suns.

Suns at Rockets - 8:05 PM EST

            Phoenix: 29-18 SU, 32-14-1 ATS
            Houston: 32-17 SU, 25-22-2 ATS

The Suns hit the highway following Tuesday's home contest against the struggling Bulls, as Phoenix swept its previous four-game road trip. The highlight from that successful highway swing came in a 102-94 triumph at Indiana as 11 ½-point underdogs, while improving to 7-3 ATS the last 10 games away from the Valley. Jeff Hornacek's team humbled the Rockets at the Toyota Center in early December, 97-88 to cash as 9 ½-point underdogs. The Suns limited James Harden to 14 points, while going 0-for-10 from three-point range in the loss.

The Rockets are riding a three-game winning streak, which includes victories over cross-state rivals San Antonio and Dallas in a back-to-back set. Houston is rolling at home since the start of the New Year, winning eight of nine games at the Toyota Center, but Kevin McHale's club has covered just five times in this stretch. The Rockets have struggled to capitalize on three-game hot streaks this season, going just 2-6 SU/ATS following three consecutive victories.

Heat at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

            Miami: 34-13 SU, 20-27 ATS
Los Angeles: 34-17 SU, 29-22 ATS

The defending champion Heat embarks on a six-game road trip, with four of those contests coming prior to the All-Star break. Miami travels to the West Coast to take on the Clippers on Wednesday, as the Heat has won seven of their last nine games. Erik Spoelstra’s club is riding a 3-1 SU/ATS stretch on the highway following a three-game road skid last month, while winning three of their past four contests on their latest Western swing in December.

The Clippers return home after falling at the buzzer on Monday at Denver, 116-115 as 1 ½-point road favorites. Since losing at home to the Suns in late December, Doc Rivers’ crew has taken seven straight games at Staples Center, while going 4-3 ATS in this span. In the last meeting between the Heat and Clippers in South Florida in November, Miami held off Los Angeles, 102-97, as the Clips cashed as six-point underdogs.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Heat at Clippers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5, 210)

Miami hasn’t notched a road win over the Los Angeles Clippers during the LeBron James era and takes another shot when the Heat visit the Staples Center on Wednesday. Miami is 0-3 in Los Angeles against the Clippers since James joined the squad and has lost five straight visits overall. The Clippers have played surprisingly well since point guard Chris Paul suffered a shoulder injury, going 12-5 without one of the league’s top players.

Miami has won five of its last six games after securing a 102-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons behind 30 points and 10 rebounds from guard Dwyane Wade. The game against the Clippers is the first of a six-game road trip and the Heat don’t play at home again until Feb. 23. Los Angeles is beginning a five-game road trip after playing nine of its last 11 on the road. The Clippers fell 116-115 to Denver on Monday when Nuggets guard Randy Foye connected on a last-second 30-footer.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Miami), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: The Clippers opened as 2-point home faves but have been bet down to -1.5. The total is 210.

                    POWER RANKINGS: Heat (-14.5) - Clippers (-12.3) + Home Court (-3.0) = Clippers -0.8

KEY INJURIES: Heat: N/A. Clippers: Chris Paul (Out, Shoulder)

WHY BET THE HEAT (34-13): Wade was 13-of-19 shooting in his stellar game against the Pistons and has put together solid back-to-back outings. Wade had 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting against the New York Knicks two days earlier as the balky knees that recently caused him to miss four straight games have calmed down. “The rest did him well,” center Chris Bosh said after the win over the Pistons. “He has a lot of spring in his legs. When he plays well, we’re a tough team to beat.”

WHY BET THE CLIPPERS (34-17): Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers will be watching how his team performs against the Heat as he once again stated his own team isn’t “elite” as the contest approached. “We can be a good team the way we are playing, but if you’re going to be elite, you’re going to have to have something of a standard defensively,” Rivers said. “We’re working on it.” The Clippers have the fourth-best record in the Western Conference and forward Blake Griffin has been carrying the club with nine consecutive 20-point outings, averaging 27.2 points during the hot streak.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Home team is 15-5-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
                    * Over is 14-5 in the last 19 meetings.
                    * Heat are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.
                    * Over is 7-2 in Clippers last nine vs. Eastern Conference.
