Game of the Day: Bulls at Hawks
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks (-1, 188)

The Chicago Bulls have persevered through numerous injuries to key players more adeptly than the Atlanta Hawks, which is why the teams have passed one another while heading in opposite directions in the Eastern Conference standings. The Hawks will try to narrow the gap by one game when they host the Bulls on Tuesday. Chicago, which is in fourth place in the East, has won four straight in the series including the first two meetings this season.

The Hawks are expected to be without forward Paul Millsap (knee), further depleting a frontcourt that is already missing its top three centers in Al Horford, Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon, but they won without Millsap on Saturday, beating New York 107-98 to snap an eight-game skid. "It was very important," forward Mike Scott told reporters. "We were down Paul, down so many bodies. It was just great for everyone to come out and play hard and finally get a win." The Bulls also have endured their share of injuries, most notably losing point guard Derrick Rose for another full season, and Jimmy Butler missed Sunday's 93-79 loss at Miami with a rib injury and is considered questionable to return against the Hawks.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), SportSouth (Atlanta)
LINE HISTORY: Early lines in Las Vegas had this game listed pick'em but adjusted their suggested spread to Bulls -2 with Paul Millsap out. The total was sent out at 187. Online shops opened Atlanta as high as -2 but that was bet down to -1. The total opened at 188 points.

    POWER RANKINGS: Bulls (-7.0) - Hawks (-6.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Hawks -2.0

INJURY WATCH: Bulls - Jimmy Butler (Ques. - Ribs), HAWKS - Paul Millsap (Out, Knee)

ABOUT THE BULLS (29-26 SU, 27-28 ATS, 22-33 O/U): Chicago has been a streaky team and strung together its third five-game winning streak of the season before falling to Miami. The Bulls were less than thrilled with their effort against the Heat, who were without LeBron James (broken nose) but still held Chicago to 35 percent shooting. Center Joakim Noah and forward Taj Gibson combined for 40 points and 35 rebounds against Miami and will look to duplicate their performance in the last meeting with Atlanta, in which they combined for 43 points and 28 boards.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (26-29 SU, 27-27-1 ATS, 34-21 O/U): Atlanta, which has steadily slid down the Eastern Conference standings since the brunt of the injuries hit, is tied for seventh with Charlotte but still has a 3.5-game cushion over ninth-place Detroit. It's remarkable the Hawks are still in the mix considering they've used 16 different starting lineups — including a different one in each of the last six games. Scott has been the latest player to emerge, as the second-year forward has scored 20 and 30 points in the past two games.

    TRENDS:

    * Bulls are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
    * Under is 10-1 in the last 11 meetings.
    * Favorite is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
    * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 17-23

Hottest ATS - Miami Heat (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

The Heat came into the week facing three straight statement games - including back-to-back showdowns with their opponents from the 2011 and 2012 NBA Finals, and an encounter with one of the top defensive teams in the league. All Miami did is earn a double-digit victory in Dallas, wallop the Thunder in Oklahoma City and return home to cruise past the Chicago Bulls despite playing without superstar LeBron James. The Heat are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine overall and expect James (broken nose) back this week.

Coldest ATS - Oklahoma City Thunder (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS)

The Thunder's week was short and anything but sweet, as they welcomed back point guard Russell Westbrook with a pair of clunkers against the Heat and Los Angeles Clippers. Oklahoma City struggled to do much of anything against the Heat, losing by 22 after going in as a three-point favorite. The Thunder ran into the opposite problem in an eight-point loss to the Clippers - they had no trouble scoring, but allowed Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Co. to hang a whopping 125 points on them.

Best Over play - Los Angeles Clippers (1-2 SU, 3-0 O/U)

No matter how much the over-under rises for Clippers games, Lob City continues to deliver on the "Over". It had a perfect week coming out of the All-Star break, losing a 113-103 decision to the San Antonio Spurs, dropping a 102-96 decision to the Memphis Grizzlies and combining with Oklahoma City to score 242 points in Sunday's shootout win. Chris Paul looks sensational in his return to injury, while Blake Griffin is averaging better than 30 points per game so far in February.

Best Under play - New Orleans Pelicans (0-3 SU, 0-3 O/U)

The Pelicans were expected to be one of the higher-scoring units in the NBA coming into the season, with three talented guards and a dangerous froncourt in Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson. That hasn't panned out due in part to injuries to Anderson and Jrue Holiday, and things reached a new low last week with New Orleans failing to break 93 points in any of its three losses. Davis has shown to be a star in the making, but the secondary scoring just hasn't been there of late.

    Surveying the schedule

Don't look now, but the Golden State Warriors - yep, the Warriors - are in the top 10 in the NBA in fewest points allowed (98.6). That new-found commitment to the other end of the court will be put to the test, as the Warriors open a six-game Eastern Conference road trip Monday night against the Detroit Pistons. With games in Chicago, New York and Toronto to follow, Golden State could find the sledding tough before wrapping things up next week against Indiana and Boston.

Felton is expected to be arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the second, third and fourth degrees. The charges stem from Felton possessing an unregistered gun.

A Knicks spokesperson said the team had no immediate comment on the issue. The Knicks next game is Thursday at Miami.

The Magic can't do it on the road

The Orlando Magic have been pretty awful this year, but they have been even worse when you just look at their road record against the spread. The Magic are 9-20 ATS on the road this season, but they have not covered a road game since Dec. 16.

This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Letdown spot

Phoenix will conclude a rough three-game stretch Tuesday night when it hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Suns were at home against the Spurs and Rockets for their previous two games, beating San Antonio 106-85 and losing to Houston 115-112. If they beat Minnesota, they will consider their mini homestand a success.

The Suns will be in a letdown spot the following night in Utah, especially if they win Tuesday. Phoenix will be playing its third game in four nights in the thin air and altitude of Utah. It will also be the Suns’ sixth game over a nine-day stretch since coming back from the All-Star break.

            Lookahead spot

Houston comes into Tuesday night’s game at Sacramento as a winner of nine of its last 10 games. The Rockets are in the middle of a five-game road trip since coming off the All-Star break, and their game against the Kings is not the win they want. Their circled game comes the following night in Los Angeles.

The Rockets will play the Clippers Wednesday night and, considering the schedule, Houston will likely ease up in Sacramento in order to save energy for the bigger game. Houston will also be playing its fifth game over an eight-day stretch versus the Clippers.

            Schedule spot

Golden State embarked on a six-game East Coast road trip that began in Detroit Monday. The Warriors will then stop in Chicago, New York, Toronto, and Indiana before finishing in Boston on March 5. The trouble spot for Golden State will come Sunday, March 2 in Toronto.

That game will be the Warriors' fourth of the week and it’s simply a bad scheduling spot for Golden State. The start time for that game is 4 pm ET which is awkward to begin with, and it’s even worse for a Western team on a long East Coast trip. The Raptors will have two days off prior to that game, so the Warriors are certainly in an extremely difficult scheduling spot for their stop north of the border.

              ATS winning streak

Nebraska doesn’t have much of a basketball pedigree. The last time the Cornhuskers heard their name called on Selection Sunday, Bill Clinton was still almost a year away from being impeached. In all, Nebraska has made only six NCAA tournament appearances. And while the Huskers will likely have to shock the basketball world in the Big Ten tournament (something they have never done) to get in this season, they’re making things interesting for non-bettors and bettors alike. Their neat five-game SU winning streak is paralleled by a five-game ATS win streak, and Nebraska is now 16-10 overall and above water (8-6) in the conference. And there’s more good news: Nebraska’s next three opponents (Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana) are a combined 14-28 in the league.

              ATS losing streak

Brian Shaw certainly didn’t sign on for this. Hired late as head coach of the Nuggets, Shaw has been trying to apply the brakes to the fire-drill offense the Nuggets used for years under George Karl. But injuries (Danillo Gallinari, Nate Robinson and JaVale McGee are out for the year, and Ty Lawson has been out with a broken rib) have intervened. It’s all added up to what is likely to be a sub-.500 season. The Nuggets have won only one game since their best player, Lawson, went down with a broken rib, and Denver has covered only once in the last nine games. Lawson is due back Tuesday and five of the next six are at home, but the damage appears to have been done.

NEXT UP – Tuesday vs. Portland

              Over/under streak

Exactly when did the Detroit Pistons decide that it was in their best interest to stop playing defense? In their last four games the Pistons have given up 108 and 116 in a back-to-back set against Charlotte, 107 to Atlanta and 113 to Dallas. Naturally, all games went over, and Detroit is now an astounding 40-16 O/U this season, with the last four all breaking the ceiling. This team has Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond to protect the rim and still gives up more points than all but four teams. Opponents shoot better against the Pistons (nearly 47 percent) than anyone else. Not hard to understand why so many Detroit games exceed the number.

NEXT UP: Monday vs. Golden State (Pistons +2.5, 209)

                            Wednesday, February 26

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Rockets at Clippers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Clippers (-5.5, 220)

James Harden has proven he’s one of the most explosive scorers in the NBA and the Houston star has quite an act to follow up when the Rockets visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. Harden scored a season-high 43 points and also had eight assists and three steals despite sitting out the fourth quarter as Houston thrashed the lowly Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. Los Angeles also has a hot scorer in Jamal Crawford, who has strung together eight straight 20-point outings.

Crawford made seven 3-pointers while scoring 24 points in Monday’s 123-110 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, one day after he poured in 36 points in a 125-117 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Crawford is averaging 25.8 points during his hot stretch while knocking down 28 3-pointers. The Rockets have won 10 of their last 11 games and are 3-1 entering the finale of a five-game road trip. Harden scored Houston’s final 18 points of the first quarter in the easy 129-103 win over the Kings while falling three points shy of his career high.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Houston, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: Los Angeles opened as a 5.5-point favorite and dropped as low as -5 at some markets. The total opened as low as 219.5 and moved to 220.

                            POWER RANKINGS: Rockets (-11.5) - Clippers (-12.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Clippers -3.5

INJURY WATCH: Rockets - Greg Smith (Ques. - knee). Clippers - J.J. Redick (Out - back)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (38-18 SU, 29-25-2 ATS, 26-28 O/U): Harden joins Hakeem Olajuwon (1996) and Clyde Drexler (1995) as the only Houston players with at least 43 points, eight assists and three steals in the same game over the past 25 years. Afterward, he was more interested in discussing what the win meant to the team than dissecting his personal exploits. “Those are the type of wins that we need, especially late in the season, to lock down and focus,” Harden said. The All-Star guard is averaging 33.8 points over the last five games and has scored 35 or more points in three of them.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (39-20 SU, 33-26 ATS, 35-24 O/U): Forward Glen Davis will make his debut with the team after reaching buyout terms with the Orlando Magic late last week and signing with Los Angeles. The presence of Doc Rivers, who coached Davis in Boston, and point guard Chris Paul were pivotal factors in the decision, and Paul is looking forward to seeing what Davis can add to the team. “I think ‘Big Baby’ is going to bring energy, excitement and passion,” Paul told reporters. “Obviously, I know him a little bit better than some of the other guys and I’m just excited about him. He’s a great personality and competitor.”

                            TRENDS:

                                Wednesday, February 26

Suns' guard Goran Dragic, questionable Wednesday

Dragic twisted his right ankle Tuesday against the Timberwolves and is questionable to play Wednesday against the Jazz.

Rockets and Clippers open with huge O/U

The Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets are second and third, respectively, in scoring offense this season and they have gotten a huge line to show.

The line for the game opened at an extremely high 220. When you consider that earlier this season these teams scored a combined 255 points.

Warriors failing to cover in Chicago

The Golden State Warriors start their six game road trip in Chicago, a court that hasn’t been good to them. The Warriors are 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four in Chicago.

Golden State opens as a 3-point road favorite Wednesday.

Cavs not a safe double-digit dog play

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been terrible this season against the spread when they are double-digit dogs. When the Cavs are spotted 10 or more points this season they are 1-4 ATS.

The Cavs opened at +13.5 when they visit the Thunder Wednesday.
