    February 18, 2014

Be sure to follow us on Twitter for the latest NBA Updates!

After taking off four days for the All-Star break, the Association returns to the hardwood on Tuesday with nine games on tap and seven of those matchups will be conference clashes, five in the Eastern Conference.

Even though the East is inferior to the West as a whole, the oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag still have Miami (2/1) and Indiana (11/5) listed as the top two choices to win this year’s NBA Finals.

It’s hard to see anybody unseating the top pair in the East but it will be interesting to see who they’ll end up playing in the first and second-round of the upcoming playoffs.

For this installment, let’s handicap the five matchups in the East.

Cleveland (20-33 SU, 20-33 ATS) at Philadelphia (15-39 SU, 21-33 ATS)

It’s hard to make a case for either team here and the best play might be a pass. The Cavaliers have been installed as road favorites and you might ask why when you realize that they’ve gone 7-20 SU and 9-18 ATS as visitors this season. However, Philadelphia has lost eight straight and 11 of its last 12 and the lone win came on a buzzer beater at Boston (95-94) in a game they shouldn’t have won.

While the 76ers have been slumping, the Cavaliers have won and covered four straight games, two of them on the road as well. Cleveland has definitely underachieved this season but the recent winning streak started once the team fired general manager Chris Grant on Feb. 6.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this season. The Cavaliers have won two of the first three encounters against the 76ers this season, both victories coming at home. Philadelphia defeated Cleveland 94-79 on Nov. 8 at home. The ‘under’ has gone 2-1 in the three games.

Toronto (28-24 SU, 31-20 ATS) at Washington (25-27 SU, 28-23 ATS)

If the playoffs started today, these two teams would be meeting in the first-round. Toronto has gone 2-0 both SU and ATS against Washington this season, which includes a 101-88 road win on Jan. 13. For the third go ‘round, the Wizards opened as three-point favorites and the line has held steady overnight.

The Wizards closed the first-half with a 1-4 record but the four losses were by a combined 13 points and one of those came in overtime. Prior to the skid, Washington earned solid home victories against Western Conference contenders in Oklahoma City and Portland.

Even though Washington has shown it can play with anybody, its home record (13-13 SU, 10-15-1 ATS) is less than desirable. Meanwhile, Toronto has been very profitable (14-14 SU, 19-9 ATS) on the road.

The total on this matchup is hovering around 195. The ‘under’ has gone 2-0 in both meetings this season and is 5-1 in the last six matchups between the pair.

Atlanta (25-26 SU, 26-25 ATS) at Indiana (40-12 SU, 32-20 ATS)

The Pacers have lived up to expectations this season on the court and more importantly for bettors. Indiana has been a beast at home (25-3 SU, 18-10 ATS) and what’s more impressive is that club has gone 13-2 SU and 9-6 ATS when laying double digits.

Indiana is in that role again tonight, laying 10 ½-points to Atlanta. These teams met a couple weeks ago in Atlanta and Indiana captured an 89-85 road win as a 3 ½-point favorite.

The Hawks have been a middle of the road team in the East this season but most of their damage has come at home. On the road Atlanta has struggled to a 9-17 SU and 11-15 ATS record and it ended the first-half with a pair of double-digit blowout losses at Chicago (85-100) and Toronto (83-104).

Atlanta’s offense has gone missing lately, averaging 85.8 PPG in its last five games. The team is 0-5 both SU and ATS during this span while the ‘under’ has gone 4-1.

Tonight’s total has jumped from 191 to 192. The ‘under’ has gone 2-0 in the two encounters between the Pacers and Hawks this season.

Charlotte (23-30 SU, 29-23 ATS) at Detroit (22-30 SU, 24-28 ATS)

On Monday afternoon, one offshore outfit opened the Pistons as 6 ½-point favorites and that was quickly hit down. Detroit has settled as a 4 ½-point favorite at most books for this matchup and it finished up the first-half with a 3-1 run both SU and ATS, which includes a 1-1 record for interim coach John Loyer.

Loyer replaced Maurice Cheeks, who was abruptly fired by the team on Sunday Feb. 10. The Pistons have been a major disappointment on the court and at the betting counter. Detroit has gone 12-16 both SU and ATS at home this season. However, the club has won and covered five of its last six from The Palace of Auburn Hills.

These teams have already met once this season and it’s a game that Detroit wants to forget. The Bobcats rallied past the Pistons 116-106 on Dec. 20 as six-point road underdogs by outscoring them 41-17 in the fourth quarter.

Detroit has been the best ‘over’ team (35-16-1) in the NBA this season and tonight’s total has already jumped from 201 ½ to 204. Make a note that the ‘over’ is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the Pistons and Bobcats and that includes a 5-0 ‘over’ run in the last five played at The Palace.

Orlando (16-38 SU, 23-30 ATS) at Milwaukee (9-43 SU, 23-30 ATS)

I shouldn’t even bother writing about this matchup but if you do decide to bet the side on this game, don’t pat yourself on the back if you win and you better not bitch if you lose.

The Magic opened as two-point road favorites and that seems a little strange when you realize they’ve gone 0-12 both SU and ATS in their last 12 road games. During this span, the ‘under’ has gone 11-1. Think about that! If you’ve faded Orlando blindly and bet the ‘under’ in a two-team parlay in their last 12 road games, you would be up $2,660 based on one-unit plays ($100).

Fading Milwaukee has been just as golden for bettors this season, especially at home where the Bucks have gone 5-21 SU and 9-17 ATS. The Bucks aren’t a talented club and they’ve also been hampered by injuries. Veteran Caron Butler (ankle) is expected to be back tonight and that should help, plus a few other key parts are ‘questionable.’

Orlando has gone 5-5 SU and 4-6 ATS as a favorite this season, all of those results occurring at home. Against the Bucks, the Magic have gone 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS this season, both wins coming at home.

      ATS winning streak
      Charlotte Bobcats

Are the Bobcats the only team in the Eastern Conference that actually WANTS to make the playoffs?
The Tank Marathon is approaching the 20-mile mark, and should produce some rancid basketball east of the Mississippi over the final two months of the season as teams shed talent and try to improve their draft standing.

But the Sons of Michael Jordan might actually be motivated to make the playoffs for the second time in franchise history, at least in the short term, as they try to sneak into the 7 or 8 spot and certain first-round elimination. The Bobcats are 23-30 SU (8th in the conference), but 29-22 ATS and have covered three of the last four games.

The schedule looks doable, at least for the next week and a half. They have a home-and-home with the dysfunctional Pistons this Tuesday and Wednesday, then home games against Pelicans and Grizzlies before things get insane – a 4-game, 6-day stretch that includes a road trip to San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Miami before a home game against Indiana. If the Bobcats somehow manage to steal 3 of those 8 games, they could gain ground in the tanking East.

      ATS losing streak
      New York Knicks

Get the feeling that Carmelo Anthony wishes he could play in an All-Star game every night instead of dealing
with the NBA grind and the pressure to win at Madison Square?

The Knicks were on one of their all-to-frequent crappy runs leading into the All-Star break, losing 5 of 6 SU (and also ATS) and Mike Woodson opening talking about how he figures to get fired. Included in that stretch was a loss at home to a Sacramento team that had played the night before and was riding a 7-game road losing streak.

To make matters worse, the Knicks will spend most of the next three weeks on road, with 8 of 10 on the road. New York is 12-18 away from MSG and hasn’t covered the spread in a road game since Jan. 11.

      Over/under streak
      Syracuse Orange

Undefeated college basketball teams are as rare as honest politicians these days, and it doesn’t look like the 25-0 Syracuse Orange are going to be able to run the table.

Jim Boeheim’s offense is starting to show a little wear and tear – his team has been held under 62 points for four straight games, and tight games have resulted in four straight games going under. After taking on Boston College on Wednesday, the Orange travel to Tobacco Road for its second game this month against Duke. The first one went overtime (and easily over), which could provide another opportunity for under players this time around as the books set the number arbitrarily high.

Game of the Day: Spurs at Clippers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (-5, 211)

The Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs have yet to play a close contest against one another this season entering their final matchup of the regular season in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Clippers routed the Spurs 115-92 at home on Dec. 16 and it was San Antonio’s time to cruise to an easy victory when it produced a 116-92 home win on Jan. 4. The Spurs have the second-best record in the Western Conference while the Clippers possess the fourth-best mark.

Los Angeles point guard Chris Paul returned from a shoulder injury to play in the final two games before the break and he displayed that he’s back in form by scoring 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting and notching 12 assists in last Wednesday’s victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Clippers have received terrific play from All-Star power forward Blake Griffin and have won their last three games. San Antonio has persevered through a slew of injuries and stands 4-2 on the nine-game rodeo trip that runs through Feb. 21.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: Books opened Los Angeles as low as -4.5 which was bet up to -5. The total opened 210, climbed quickly to 211.5, then came back down to 211.

              POWER RANKINGS: Spurs (-13.0) - Clippers (12.5) + Home Court (-3.0) = Clippers -2.5

INJURY WATCH: Spurs - Manu Ginobili (Probable, hamstring), Tony Parker (Ques, hand), Tiago Splitter (Ques, calf), Kawhi Leonard (Out, hand). Clippers - Willie Green (Ques, hip), J.J. Redick (Out, back)

ABOUT THE SPURS (38-15 SU, 25-28-0 ATS, 31-21-1 O/U): Point guard Tony Parker is batting back and hand issues and he is expected to play after making a brief cameo in Sunday’s All-Star Game. Parker missed the final game prior to the break and the Spurs also figure to be without center Tiago Splitter (shin) for the fourth straight game. Guard Manu Ginobili (hamstring) and forward Kawhi Leonard (broken finger) remain sidelined as players like Nando de Colo, Cory Joseph and Patty Mills receive more minutes.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (37-18 SU, 31-24-0 ATS, 31-24-0 O/U): Griffin scored 38 points on 19-of-23 shooting in the All-Star Game and scored 20 or more points in 13 consecutive games prior to the break. Griffin stepped up his scoring when Paul was sidelined and he is averaging a career-best 24.2 points. “I’ve really just tried to expand my game every year,” said Griffin, “and tried to add things and improve upon things that I need to improve on and even improve upon the things that I do well.” Griffin is averaging 23 points in the two games against San Antonio this season.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
              * Under is 20-6-1 in the last 27 meetings in Los Angeles.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three bad NBA teams that could become good bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NBA season is entering its final 30 games. Typically, this is where the contenders solidify their positions while the also-rans simply run away. But there are some teams that don’t fall into either category and that can provide some interesting betting value over the season’s final stretch.

We look at three bad teams that could become good bets before the schedule runs out:

Detroit Pistons (22-30 SU, 23-28-1 ATS)

It may come across as an understatement but there’s a lot of uncertainty in the Detroit Pistons camp these days. Interim head coach John Loyer probably won’t be around next year, general manager Joe Dumars may be on the chopping block, and no one knows if they’ll be sellers at the trade deadline. But what the Pistons do have is a team with some decent talent, a solid mix of veterans and youth, and a ninth-place position in the standings, just a half game out of the playoffs.

They have a tough schedule over the season’s final 30 games but claim they’re focused on the playoffs, which current form would suggest is true. They are 5-5 SU (6-4 ATS) over their last 10, which just might get them there and make backers a decent profit in the process.

New Orleans Pelicans (23-29 SU, 23-26-3 ATS)

It was around this point six years ago that New Orleans forward Anthony Davis, at the time a 5-foot-9, eighth-grade point guard, went on a growth spurt. It has yet to stop. The now 6-foot-10, Davis is an NBA All-Star, carrying an NBA franchise towards a bright future which bettors may take notice of these last 30 games of the season.

The Pelicans have been dynamite against teams below them, going 17-9 SU against sub .500 teams and 14-7 versus the moribund Eastern Conference. With nine games still to play versus the East and as many versus sub .500 teams in the West, there may be some value backing the Big Easy over the last 30 games.

Utah Jazz (19-33 SU, 23-26-3 ATS)

Don’t snicker but things are looking promising for the Utah Jazz going into the season’s final 30 games. Sure, they are 19-33 SU but did win three in row (2-1 ATS) before the break, including a 94-89 victory over the Miami Heat as 9.5-point dogs.

This win was part of a 5-5 SU streak (4-5-1 ATS) that showed evidence of a maturing, young core. What’s more, they have been quite good in close games going 13-8 SU in games decided by less than 10 points, posting a 15-3-3 ATS record in these nail biters.

                      Tuesday, February 18

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Letdown spot

Memphis will begin the second half of their season at home against the New York Knicks Tuesday. The Grizzlies will have two days off following that game before hosting the Los Angeles Clippers Friday night. Memphis will be ready for that game, especially since they lost by 20 points (101-81) on its home court to the Clippers the last time they played.

The Grizzlies will then travel to Charlotte to face the Bobcats Saturday night, putting them in a bad scheduling spot. If Memphis is able to beat the Clippers, then a letdown is likely to occur against the lowly Bobcats, especially since it will be playing on back-to-back nights.

                      Lookahead spot

Minnesota will play three games this week with two of those outings on the road. The Timberwolves host the Indiana Pacers Wednesday before hitting the road for games in Utah Saturday and Portland Sunday.

The Timberwolves will be focused on the Pacers and the Trail Blazers, but not the Jazz. Minnesota does catch a break with two days off prior to playing in Utah, but the much bigger game comes the next night in Portland. The Timberwolves have double revenge motivation against the Trail Blazers, after a recent 117-110 home loss. Minnesota may lack focus in Saturday night’s game against the Jazz.

                      Schedule spot

The Sacramento Kings have had a miserable season and they begin the second half with an 18-35 SU record. But they will be in a terrific scheduling spot Saturday when they host the Boston Celtics. Sacramento will have two days to prepare while the Celtics will be playing on a back-to-back road set and also their third game in four nights.

Sacramento will also be playing with revenge after losing in Boston 99-89 on February 7. The Kings were without their third-leading scorer in that game, as Rudy Gay sat out with the flu. While it’s true the Celtics were without Rajon Rondo, he may sit out this game as well because it will be Boston’s second game in consecutive nights.

                        Toronto: 29-24 SU, 32-20-1 ATS

These two clubs meet for the final time in the regular season as the road team has won and covered each of the first three matchups. Toronto heads home with no rest following Tuesday's victory at Washington, as the Raptors have lost three consecutive times on the second of a back-to-backs. The Raps beat the Bulls in each of the previous two meetings at the United Center, while limiting Chicago to less than 79 points in each of those victories.

The Bulls closed the first half with three consecutive wins, including back-to-back home blowouts of the Hawks and Nets. Chicago has won five of its past eight road contests, while posting an impressive 7-3 ATS record in the past 10 away underdog opportunities. Tom Thibodeau's team is back to their stifling defensive ways by allowing less than 100 points in nine of the past 10 games, while cashing the 'under' nine times in this span.

Pacers at Wolves - 8:05 PM EST

                        Indiana: 41-12 SU, 32-20-1 ATS
                        Minnesota: 25-28 SU, 27-26 ATS

The Pacers have been nearly unbeatable at home this season, but have also held their own on the highway with a 15-9 SU record. Indiana travels to the Target Center with no rest on Wednesday, looking for the season sweep of Minnesota. The previous meeting between these teams went to the Pacers in a 98-84 home triumph in late November as seven-point favorites. The Pacers have won four of the last five matchups with Minnesota, but Frank Vogel's club is 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS on the road with no rest this season.

Minnesota snapped a four-game skid prior to the break by routing a reeling Denver squad, 117-90 as 6 ½-point home favorites. The Wolves have turned into pointspread poison of late, covering just twice in the last eight games, including home underdog defeats to Memphis, Portland, and Houston in this span. Kevin Martin (thumb) and Nikola Pekovic (Achilles) remain out indefinitely, as the Wolves have lost six of nine games since Pekovic was injured in late January.

Nets at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST

                        Brooklyn: 24-27 SU, 25-26 ATS
                        Utah: 19-33 SU, 23-26-3 ATS

The Nets embark on a six-game road trip, with the first five contests coming against Western Conference foes. Deron Williams returns to his old stomping grounds for the third time since getting traded by the Jazz to the Nets in 2011, as Brooklyn has lost each of the last four visits to Salt Lake City. Since starting the season at 1-5 SU/ATS in the road favorite role, the Nets have won and covered three of their past four in this situation, while limiting three teams to 82 points or less.

The Jazz isn't headed to the playoffs, but Utah has played much better since a dreadful 1-14 start to the season. Tyrone Corbin's squad has won four of the past six home contests, while closing out the first half of the season with three straight victories overall. Utah has been limited to 97 points or less in each of its last four opportunities as a home underdog, while cashing the 'under' in six of the past seven games overall. The Jazz will be playing with revenge after getting wiped out at Barclays Center back in November, 104-88 as 7 ½-point underdogs.

Spurs at Blazers - 10:35 PM EST

San Antonio: 38-15 SU, 25-28 ATS
                        Portland: 36-17 SU, 29-24 ATS

The Spurs are nearing the final leg of their annual Rodeo Road Trip, playing at Portland on Wednesday and Phoenix on Friday before returning home next week. San Antonio heads to the Pacific Northwest with no rest following Tuesday's contest against the Clippers, as the Spurs own an impressive 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS record the last six road games on the second of a back-to-back. Gregg Popovich's club has struggled against the Blazers this season, losing both meetings, including a 115-105 defeat at the Moda Center in early November.

The Blazers enter Wednesday's contest off consecutive losses to the Thunder and Clippers, while covering just one of their last five home contests. Since a 31-9 start, Portland has put together a 5-8 SU/ATS record the past 13 games, including double-digit setbacks to the Rockets, Grizzlies, and Wizards. Portland has taken advantage of teams on the second of a back-to-back set, winning 15 of 17 times against these tired squads, including a 5-1-1 mark to the 'over' the last seven at home in this situation. However, the Blazers will be without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who is out for at least a week with a groin strain.

Straight up records and points per game often tell only a small fraction of the story when it comes to NBA totals. We look at four teams that possess some interesting total trends to see why they occur so bettors can try and determine if they’ll continue.

                                Memphis Grizzlies (29-23 SU, 22-30 O/U)

There may not be a better team in the NBA at getting opponents to play their style than the Memphis Grizzlies. According to advanced statistics, they average the lowest amount of possession attempts per game at 91.6 yet they are quite efficient offensively, averaging 102 points per 100 possessions. This is just further evidence of what we know about the Grizz: They are a slow, deliberate team that runs their offense through their bigs and uses the shot clock to get high percentage shots.

And while oddsmakers have a good grip on this team’s totals at home they seem to underestimate the Grizzlies’ ability to impose their methodical will on the road. This is evidenced 14-14 O/U record at home and their 8-16 O/U record away from FedEx Forum.

                                Portland Trail Blazers (36-17 SU, 33-19-1 O/U)

Maybe it’s the fact their tucked away in the Pacific Northwest or that they just continue to surprise everyone, but oddmakers can’t seem to get a handle on the Trail Blazers’ totals. Stats have Portland as the league’s best offensive team, averaging 107.9 points on less than 98 possessions per game.

According to advanced metrics, they are right near the bottom defensively allowing 105.7 points per 100 attempts, translating into a 33-19-1 O/U record overall. However, it is interesting to note the proliferation of the Over has slowed over the last 10, going 4-5-1 O/U. And bettors could see this trend continue if the Blazers make a move to shore up their defense before the deadline.

                                Charlotte Bobcats (23-30 SU, 24-27-2 O/U)

Head coach Steve Clifford was hired to give the Charlotte Bobcats an identity and that he has, turning the Bobcats into a defensively-tough, offensively-efficient squad that is currently in a playoff position for the first time since the 2009-2010 season.

The Bobcats average 95.1 possessions per game, have the lowest turnover rate in the league, and the second best defensive rebounding rate. But they are a sub-par offensive team, averaging just 94.7 points per game and their defense efficiency falls off away from home, allowing 99.6 away from Time Warner Cable Arena and 94.4 at home. This may explain why the O/U is 9-16-1 in Charlotte and 16-9-2 on the road.

                                Atlanta Hawks (25-26 SU, 30-21 O/U)

The Atlanta Hawks are about as “middle of the road” as you can get. They currently sit with a 25-26 record overall, averaging 101.4 points per game while allowing 100.9 points per contest. Even considering their ATS record, they are about as even as Steven with a 26-25 ATS count. So why would the Hawks’road record lean so heavily towards the Over with a 30-21 O/U record?

The main reason seems to be that they’re a team of runs. For example, in November they averaged 98.1 points while allowing 98.5. While, through December and January, they averaged 105.3 and allowed 102.3 points. Not surprisingly, the total goes on runs as well with the Over hitting in stretches of nine and five games in a row and four in a row on two separate occasions. Meanwhile, the Under has paid out in runs of five and six and has currently hit in the team’s last three before the break.
