  • Embiid, 76ers rout Wolves 149-107
    January 15, 2019
    By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson each scored 31 points as the Golden State Warriors, propelled by an NBA-record, 51-point first quarter, regained the top spot in the Western Conference by routing the Denver Nuggets 142-111 on Tuesday night.

Golden State cruised to a fifth straight win to move a half-game in front of the Nuggets, who had their 12-game home winning streak snapped.

The showdown between the top two teams in the conference proved a little too big for the Nuggets, with Curry and Company putting on a shooting exhibition all night long. The clinic began early with the Warriors erupting for 51 points in the opening quarter, breaking the old mark of 50 held by several teams. The last time it happened was also against Denver when Phoenix scored 50 on Nov. 10, 1990.

Golden State shot a blistering 60 percent from the field, had 38 assists and hit 21 3-pointers in leading wire-to-wire. Kevin Durant finished with 27 points and Draymond Green was a plus-41 as he had 13 assists to go with four points.

Malik Beasley finished with 22 points for the Nuggets. Big man Nikola Jokic struggled with early foul trouble, finishing with 17 points and eight assists in 23 minutes.

    76ERS 149, TIMBERWOLVES 107

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 31 points and 13 rebounds, and Philadelphia scored 83 points in the first half in a thrashing of Minnesota in Jimmy Butler's first game against his former team.

The Golden State Warriors were the only team to score more first-half points in a game this season when they dropped 92 on the Chicago Bulls on Oct. 29. The Sixers hit a team-record 21 3-pointers and reached their highest point total in the 22-year history of the Wells Fargo Center.

Butler scored 19 points in the first meeting with Minnesota since it sent him to the 76ers in a package deal that brought forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric in return. Covington and Saric were popular core pieces of Philadelphia's Trust the Process rebuild and both received massive ovations from an appreciative crowd in tribute videos.

    HAWKS 142, THUNDER 126

ATLANTA (AP) - Trae Young had 24 points and 11 assists to win the showdown of past and former Atlanta point guards, leading the Hawks over Oklahoma City.

Former Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder scored 21 points in his return to Atlanta. Schroder struggled early but had 14 points in the third period when the Thunder outscored the Hawks 41-27 to reclaim the lead.

Atlanta was similarly dominant in the second period, outscoring Oklahoma City 45-30 to match its high mark for any quarter this season. After holding a big lead of 15 points, the last time at 70-55, the Hawks led 70-59 at halftime.

John Collins made 12 of 14 shots from the field and led Atlanta with 26 points. Alex Len had 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks were 18 of 37 on 3-pointers.

Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 31 points and 11 assists. Paul George had 24 points and Jerami Grant added 21.

    BUCKS 124, HEAT 86

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in his fourth triple-double of the season, and Milwaukee cruised past Miami.

Eric Bledsoe had 17 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 16 for Milwaukee, which has won 13 of 16 dating to Dec. 14. The Bucks improved to 31-12, second-best in the NBA.

Justise Winslow and Hassan Whiteside had 19 points apiece for Miami, which fell to 21-21.

    PACERS 131, SUNS 97

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 20 points in Indiana's easy victory over Phoenix.

Myles Turner returned for the first time in four games to finish with 18 points and six rebounds. Turner was nursing a sore right shoulder over the last week.

Indiana got off to a hot start thanks to Bogdanovic, who scored the Pacers' first 10 points. The Pacers doubled the Suns' total in the first quarter, leading 38-19 at the end of the period.

Indiana limited Devin Booker to eight points in 26 minutes. Rookie Deandre Ayton finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. T.J. Warren led Phoenix with 18 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 16 points off the bench.

    LAKERS 107, BULLS 100

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lonzo Ball scored 19 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 17 and Los Angeles won for just the fourth time since LeBron James' groin injury, beating reeling Chicago.

Ball, who also had eight rebounds and six assists, scored 13 points during the second half as Los Angeles was able to break open what was a close game for the first 28 minutes. Brandon Ingram and Kyle Kuzma scored 16 apiece.

The Lakers are 4-7 since James was injured in a Dec. 25 game at Golden State.

Jabari Parker scored 18 points and Lauri Markkanen added 17 for Chicago, which has dropped eight straight

      • Wednesday’s 6-pack:

This is a little strange; Caesar’s Palace posted odds to win the NIT this March:
        5-1— Field
        6-1— Saint Mary’s
        12-1— Utah State
        15-1— Arizona
        16-1— San Francisco
20-1— Alabama, ASU, Baylor, Creighton, Oregon St, Wofford
        25-1— Clemson, East Tennessee State,

        Tweet of the Day
“You’ve got to learn too much. You’ve got to have a great relationship with your offensive line, the receivers, know all the defenses that are going to be thrown at you. It’s just not an NFL season with quarterbacks. They need a lot longer than the season. The offseason is huge for those guys to be successful.”
Former NFL DB, major league OF Brian Jordan

        Wednesday’s quiz
Hank Stram was the Chiefs’ coach for their only Super Bowl win; what other NFL team did he later coach?

        Tuesday’s quiz
NBA’s Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before moving to Oklahoma City.

        Monday’s quiz
In the movie Bull Durham, when the Bulls cut Crash Davis, he finished the season with the Asheville Tourists.

        ***********************

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

        13) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray declared for the NFL Draft, which is just a procedural thing to keep his options open; the pivotal moment in his career path will be whether or not he goes to the NFL Combine in February, 11 days after the start of spring training.

Four guys on ESPN’s NFL show Monday said they thought Murray would be a first-round draft pick in the NFL; those four guys are rarely unanimous in agreeing on anything. If he gets taken in the first round, Murray would be a damn fool to play baseball- he’ll make a lot more money as a QB than working his way up thru the minor leagues.

        12) Murray has a very interesting decision to make. Joe Mauer earned $218M in his baseball career, just in salary; Matt Holliday earned just under $160M in his. Both guys were HS quarterbacks who turned down college scholarships to become baseball players, but there also guys who tried to juggle both sports and never achieved stardom in either.

        11) Then there is Chase Daniel, who has earned $28M in his nine NFL seasons, while starting a total of four games. Playing QB in the NFL is really, really lucrative if you’re great at it. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and the Manning brothers have all earned $200M+ in their careers.

Lamar Jackson got a signing bonus of more than $4.9M as the last pick of the first round last year; Murray’s signing bonus with the A’s is $4.66M, most of which he has to return if he signs with an NFL team (he’s already gotten $1.5M of it, would get to keep $200K or so).

        10) CBSSports.com posted a mock draft Tuesday, which means bupkis but it is interesting to look at, and they had the Giants taking Murray with the 6th pick.

Oakland A’s Class A farm teams are in Beloit and Stockton; not a tough choice whether to suit up for the New Jersey Giants or the Beloit Snappers.

        9) Not sure why the Jets would want to hire a new coach, but not let the guy hire his own assistants? Apparently Baylor’s Matt Rhule and Mike McCarthy both turned the Jets down because they wanted to decide who their assistants would be, rather than be told.

        8) Not much better comedy on TV than listening to ESPN”s Jay Bilas whine about Duke’s star Zion Williamson “being officiated differently”, because he is bigger/stronger than most guys. Nothing like a TV analyst/alum toting the party line for his alma mater.

        7) Sad sign of the times: Prison guards in federal prisons are being mocked by prisoners because the guards are working, but not getting paid. Sounds like a fantastic job.

        6) Modern football: James White is a running back for the Patriots, but on Sunday against the Chargers he didn’t run the ball once— he did catch 15 passes for 97 yards.

        5) Difference between high majors and mid-majors:
Southern Illinois-Illinois State game Tuesday: one soph, 2 juniors, 7 seniors started.

Syracuse-Duke Monday night: 3 freshmen, 2 sophs, 4 juniors, one senior started.

If you play for a top 20 team now and you’re a senior, its almost like you’re a suspect.

        4) TCU is 12-3, having a pretty good season, but they’ve had three players transfer out this season, which led them to giving one of their walk-ons a scholarship, and they got creative in how they told the kid.

Players are in a meeting room, and a sheriff walks in, holding a piece of paper and looking stern. He says he is looking for someone: “Is Owen Ashieris here?” The kid gets up, walks over to the sheriff, and finds out he’s been given a college scholarship. Kind of cool.

        3) Indianapolis Colts jumped from 4-12 to 10-6 this year, and much of credit for that went to their offensive line, which protected Andrew Luck very well.

But on Tuesday, the Colts fired OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo, who was the only offensive coach that Josh McDaniel hired during his brief dalliance Indianapolis last winter. Apparently, Reich wants his own guy, so he must have someone in mind, or why not keep DeGuglielmo?

        2) Former Notre Dame QB Brandon Wimbush will play his last year of college football at Central Florida; he went 12-3 as a starting QB for the Fighting Irish.

        1) New York Governor Andrew Cuomo got off his butt this week, wants 2019 to be the year legalized sports betting comes to New York.

“Let’s authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos. It’s here. It’s a reality, and it will generate activity in those casinos.”

        Its about time.

                  • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                    Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Jazz at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Two teams in the bottom half of the Western Conference top eight hook up at Staples Center for the first time this season. Utah (24-21 SU, 22-22-1 ATS) hits the road following a perfect 4-0 homestand, capped off by a 100-94 victory over Detroit on Monday. The Jazz failed to cover for the second straight game, but held its third opponent to 95 points or less in the last four games, while Rudy Gobert pulled down 25 rebounds and scored 18 points.

The Clippers (24-19 SU, 24-19 ATS) have dropped three straight games, including back-to-back home defeats. The latest setback came on Monday in a 121-117 loss to the Pelicans as one-point underdogs, in spite of knocking down 18 three-pointers. The Clippers are currently on a 6-1 run to the UNDER, which includes three UNDERS on totals of 234 ½ and higher. Wednesday’s total opened at 222, as the past two home games for L.A. with a total in that range finished UNDER against the Pistons and Magic.

The Jazz eliminated the Clippers in the opening round of the playoffs two seasons ago, while Utah captured three of four matchups from Los Angeles last season. Utah has won three of the past four visits to Staples Center, while all four meetings in 2017-18 were decided by double-digits.

                    They’re Back

It was just a matter of time before someone woke the beast. Golden State (30-14 SU, 19-25 ATS) picked up its fifth consecutive victory last night at Denver, but the most impressive part was the opening 12 minutes. The Warriors dropped 51 points (yes, 51), while knocking down 10 treys in the first quarter of a 142-111 trouncing of the Northwest division-leading Nuggets. The defending champions scorched the Nuggets by shooting 60% from the floor, while the Splash Brothers duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson each scored 31 points to win their ninth road game in the last 10 tries.

The Warriors welcome in the Pelicans (21-23 SU, 20-24 ATS) in a rematch of their second round playoff series from last season. Golden State made quick work of New Orleans in five games, while knocking off the Pelicans in their first matchup at Oracle Arena back on Halloween, 131-121 as nine-point favorites. The Pelicans grabbed only their sixth road victory in 23 tries this season in Monday’s 121-117 triumph over the Clippers, as New Orleans has quietly won five of the past seven games.

                    Beasts of the East

The Celtics (25-18 SU, 22-21 ATS) have hit the skids of late by dropping all three games on their recent road trip, capped off by Monday’s 109-102 setback at Brooklyn. Kyrie Irving didn’t suit up for Boston as the Celtics trailed by 24 points heading into the fourth quarter. Irving is expected to return to the lineup tonight against Toronto as the Celtics have covered the spread in their last 14 home victories.

The two Atlantic division rivals have split a pair of matchups this season with the home team winning each time. Toronto cruised past Boston in the first meeting in mid-October, while the Celtics held off the Raptors in overtime on November 16 as two-point favorites, 123-116. Irving torched the Raptors for 43 points, while Kawhi Leonard posted a double-double with 31 points and 15 rebounds.

The Raptors (33-12 SU, 20-25 ATS) are riding a five-game winning streak, including a 140-138 double-overtime triumph over the Wizards on Sunday. Toronto cashed its sixth OVER in the last seven games, but the Raptors slipped to 1-7 ATS in the past eight contests on the highway. The Raptors have seen their issues in Beantown over the years by dropping four straight visits to TD Garden, while the home team is 9-0 in the past nine meetings.

                    Too Easy?

The Rockets (25-18 SU, 22-20-1 ATS) have been consistently inconsistent this month by alternating wins and losses throughout January. Houston is coming off its third victory over Memphis this season in Monday’s 112-94 blowout of the Grizzlies to improve to 12-1 SU and 11-1-1 ATS the last 13 games at Toyota Center. The Rockets continue to play without Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, and Clint Capela due to injuries, but James Harden keeps carrying the load for Houston by coming off a season-high 57 points against Memphis.

Houston hosts Brooklyn (22-23 SU, 24-21 ATS), as the Nets are currently in the top eight of the Eastern Conference playoffs in spite of a losing record. The Nets held off the Celtics on Monday, 109-102 to pick up their ninth home win in the last 10 tries. Brooklyn has dropped four of its previous six contests away from Barclays Center, including double-digit defeats at Boston and Toronto this month. The Nets fell at home to the Rockets earlier this season, 119-111, the fifth consecutive setback to Houston since December 2015.

                    Texas Toast

Both the Mavericks and Spurs are coming off losses in their last trips to the court as the two Lone Star State rivals hook up for the second time this season. San Antonio (25-20 SU, 26-18-1 ATS) held off Dallas (20-23 SU, 26-17 ATS) at AT&T Center in overtime in late October, 113-108, but the Mavs cashed as seven-point underdogs. It marked the eighth cover in the last nine matchups by Dallas in the series, but San Antonio has won five of the past six meetings at American Airlines Center.

Dallas is coming off a 119-114 home defeat to Golden State on Sunday as 5 ½-point underdogs, but the Mavericks improved to 8-0 ATS in the last eight as a home underdog. The Mavs slipped to 5-12 the last 17 games following a strong start, as three wins in this span have come by four points or less.

The Spurs are fresh off consecutive losses for the first time since early December after falling to the Thunder and Hornets since Saturday. San Antonio has seen plenty of ups and downs away from AT&T Center, but is on the downward turn by losing seven of the past 10 on the highway. The Spurs have won three straight games after scoring less than 100 points in their last contest, while putting up at least 122 points each time.

                        Too good offensively

The Bucks travel to Memphis having won eight of their last 10 games. They possess the second-highest scoring offense in the Association averaging 117.8 points a game on 48 percent shooting.

The Grizzlies have struggled to put up points this season averaging 100.9, but have held opponents to only 102.9 a game. Despite very good defensive play from both sides, the Over has hit in five straight games in the head-to-head, and eight of the last 12 when playing in Memphis. Back the Over 212.

                        Big edge on home court

The Raptors travel to Boston to take on the Celtics and have won five straight games despite a long list of injuries. The Celtics have lost three straight, but will be happy to have Kyrie Irving back in the lineup tonight.

The Celtics have won six in a row at TD Garden to push their season record to 15-5 at home. Despite their recent struggles versus Toronto, they have won five of the last six at home in the head-to-head. Take Boston on the ML.

Keeping it close enough to cover

The Nets have been playing their best basketball recently winning 14 of their last 19 games. Today they take on a Rockets team that has split its most recent six games.

The Nets have struggled against the Rockets, losing five straight and posting a 1-10 SU record when playing on the road at Houston. Despite their SU record, they have covered in six of the last eight in the head-to-head, and four of the last five in Houston. Take Brooklyn to keep it close and grab the 6-points.

                        Backing the more consistent offense

The Utah Jazz have won four straight games while holding opponents to an average of 97 points per game over their last three. They've needed to play great defense as their offense is averaging only 107.8 ppg on the season, and shooting just 40.5 percent from the field over their last three games.

Today the Jazz play against the Los Angeles Clippers who have one of the league's top scoring teams averaging 116.2 at home on 47.3 percent shooting. They've won 11 of the last 16 at home against Utah and have been lucky enough to stay healthy this season with no notable injuries. Take the Clippers to cover as 1-point favorites.

Everyone wants to get in on the scoring action

The Warriors are playing on the tail end of a back-to-back, coming off a dismantling of the Nuggets on the road 142-111, to win their fifth straight game. Today they take on a Pelicans team that has been playing much better recently winning four of its last five.

With the total set at 242, there should be more than enough points to go around.

Pelicans shooting guard E'Twaun Moore is in a favorable spot as the Warriors have surrendered 24.7 points, and 3.6 made 3-point shots per game to opposing shooting guards. Despite two slow starts since returning from injury, Moore is shooting 48 percent from the floor, and 41.7 from beyond the arc and should be able to connect on a few deep shots. Take Over his point total today.

                          • James Harden has 58 points in Rockets' OT loss to Nets
                            January 16, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Spencer Dinwiddie scored 25 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and the Brooklyn Nets spoiled James Harden's 58-point night with a 145-142 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Harden had his second straight season high after scoring 57 in a victory over Memphis on Monday night, but was only 5 of 19 from 3-point range. The Rockets shot an NBA-record 70 3s, making just 23.

Harden has scored at least 30 points in 18 straight games and has reached 40 in nine of the last 12. He was 16 of 34 overall from the field, made 21 of 23 free throws and had 10 rebounds and six assists.

Dinwiddie forced overtime, making three 3-pointers in the last 30 seconds of regulation. In the extra period, he hit the go-ahead basket with 28 seconds left.

Houston had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Gerald Green's shot clanged off the rim. After Houston blew an 11-point lead, Harden's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim to send it to overtime.

The Rockets broke their own record for 3-point attempts after shooting 61 against New Orleans on Dec. 16, 2016. Houston also holds the record for most 3-pointers made after hitting 26 in a win over Washington this season. Green, who did not attempt a 2-point basket, made 5 of 15.

                            CELTICS 117, RAPTORS 108

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving hit a foul-line fadeaway to give Boston the lead, then made a 31-foot 3-pointer to finish with 27 points and lead the Celtics past Toronto.

Returning after missing the last game with a bruised right leg, Irving had 10 points and six of his career-high 18 assist in the fourth quarter - including passes to set up Boston's last three baskets in a game-ending 17-4 run. Al Horford scored 24 points to help Boston rebound from three straight road losses.

Kawhi Leonard scored 33 points, and Serge Ibaka had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors.

                            SPURS 105, MAVERICKS 101

DALLAS (AP) - Davis Bertans hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:41 left and San Antonio overcame a 19-point first-half deficit to beat Dallas.

Bertans finished with 12 points. Marco Belinelli led the Spurs with 17.

Luka Doncic led Dallas with 25 points, adding eight rebounds and eight assists. He's the first rookie since Stephen Curry in 2010 to score 25 or more points in five straight games.

                            BUCKS 111, GRIZZLIES 101

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Milwaukee had a 19-0 third-quarter run to beat Memphis.

Eric Bledsoe added 16 points to help the Bucks to their third straight victory and 14th in 17 games. Omri Casspi led Memphis with 17 points. The Grizzlies have lost nine of 10 games.

                            PISTONS 120, MAGIC 115, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Blake Griffin scored 30 points and Andre Drummond added 14 points and 21 rebounds to help Detroit outlast Orlando in overtime.

The Pistons won for the third time in 11 games.

Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross each scored 24 points for Orlando.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                                13) Tulsa 88, UConn 80— Both head coaches got tossed at the same time in this game, which doesn’t happen a whole lot. Don’t think I’ve ever heard of it before.

Tulsa led 61-47 with 11:19 left in the game when the refs lost control of things; the delay wound up being 6-7 minutes, with both coaches pleading their cases to stay on the bench, but the refs clearly had enough of listening to them.

Tulsa was 26-36 on foul line in this game, Huskies 12-15.

                                12) Iowa State 68, Texas Tech 64— Kansas’ top two challengers in the Big X hooked up here; these are two really good teams. This easily could’ve been an Elite 8 or Final Four game.

Cyclones led 41-33 at halftime; they didn’t turn ball over once the whole half.

                                11) St John’s 81, Creighton 66— Bluejays are in top 5 in country in 3-point shooting, but were just 11-35 in this game, and they lost their 4th game in a row. Ponds scored 22 for St John’s after he missed the Red Storm’s last game

                                10) South Carolina 74, Vanderbilt 71— Commodores led 68-63 with 1:38 left before a technical foul for taunting on Vandy helped swing this foul-filled game, where both teams took 35+ foul shots.

Gamecocks are a surprising 4-0 in SEC, after a 5-7 pre-conference record; their bench outscored Vandy’s subs 28-12.

                                5) Nevada 72, Boise State 71— Red flag for the Wolf Pack, who were life/death here after losing at New Mexico earlier this month. Nevada isn’t playing that well away from Reno- they take bad shots.

                                4) Iowa 89, Penn State 82— Iowa ended this game on an 8-0 run. Nittany Lions are 0-7 in conference; their coach got suspended for a game for shoving a player during a timeout. Sounds like they’re not having much fun.
