      • Monday’s 6-pack

        — Xavier 70, Butler 69— Bulldogs lost last two games, by one point each.

        — Oregon State 79, UCLA 66— Beavers start out 3-0 in Pac-12 play.

        — New England is in the AFC title game for the 8th year in a row.

        — Last five years, home team is 10-0 SU in conference title games.

        — Four highest-scoring teams in the NFL this year are the four teams left playing.

        — Underdogs are 5-2-1 vs spread in last eight #1-#2 seed matchups in conference title games.

        Tweet of the Day
“It’s remarkable how many people that have interest in gambling don’t have the slightest understanding that the top 1% of successful bettors lose 44% of their bets, win and lose 7-10 games in a row periodically, and could care less about the swings. It’s a long game”

        Monday’s quiz

In the movie Bull Durham, when the Bulls cut Crash Davis, what team did he play for next?

        Sunday’s quiz
Bill Belichick has coached the Browns and Patriots.

        Saturday’s quiz
Knicks lost to San Antonio the last time they played in the NBA Finals, in 1999.

        ***************************

        Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

        13) If you had your choice of any QB ever in his prime to play for your team; a real team, not a fantasy team, who would you choose?

        12) If the Cardinals decide to trade QB Josh Rosen and take Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray with the first pick in April’s NFL draft, which teams would be open to trading for Rosen?

My guesses: Miami and Oakland, maybe Jacksonville.

        11) It must suck living in Los Angeles, never anything to do (sarcasm alert). Saturday, the Clippers played Detroit at home, the NHL’s Kings hosted Pittsburgh and the Rams played Dallas in an NFL playoff game.

Sunday, the Lakers host Cleveland, and I’m leaving out all the college sports taking place in the area (Long Beach St, Fullerton and LMU were all home Saturday).

        10) Movie trivia: Do you remember the 1977 movie One on One, where Robby Benson plays a hotshot college basketball player? The actor who played Coach Smith in that movie was GD Spradlin, who also played the Tom Landry-like character in North Dallas Forty.

Turns out that in real life, Spradlin was an oil man who managed John F Kennedy’s Presidential campaign in Oklahoma in 1960. Go figure.

        9) Stanford RB Bryce Love tore his ACL in their regular season finale, which helps explain why he sat out the Sun Bowl— the knee was operated on December 18.

The current bowl system has a growing problem; star players who are already projected to go to the NFL will sit these games out, for this very reason.

        8) Baseball doings:
        — Mets gave 2B Jed Lowrie $20M for two years.
        — Bronx gave 2B DJ LeMahieu $24M for two years.

        7) From Josh Applebaum of Action Network:

“Parlays provide a 30% hold for sportsbooks. Every other major sport averages a hold of 5%. They’re a massive moneymaker for the house. Nothing wrong with the occasional parlay, but individual bets are a much smarter long-term strategy”

        6) Jets are expected to hire Gregg Williams as their new DC, which is an excellent hire.

Steve Sarkisian turned down the Arizona Cardinals and went back to Alabama to be their OC, which tells me that his ultimate goal is be a college head coach again.

        5) The CEO of Disney made $65.7M last year; that seems excessive.

NBC told Megan Kelly to take a hike, but she gets all of her $69M contract, which has about $30M left on it. Ms Kelly’s exit was ignited last fall after she defended Halloween costumes that incorporate blackface. What a country.

        4) Thursday night, the Spurs beat Oklahoma City 154-147 in double OT:
        — It was the first 300-point NBA game since December 7, 2006
        — Spurs made 16-19 (84.2%) from the arc, an NBA record (with 15+ attempts)
        — Russell Westbrook was first player with 24+ points, 24+ assists in a game since Magic Johnson on January 9, 1990.

        3) Patriots 41, Chargers 28— Kansas City opened as a 3-point favorite in AFC title game. New England lost last three times they played AFC title game on road. Last time Patriots won an NFC title game on road was in 2004, last time they won any road playoff game was 2006.

This will be the first time in 70 games that a Tom Brady-led team is an underdog.

Sunday’s game was 38-7 at one point, so final score is misleading; Nantz/Romo emptied their bag of filler material, talking about everything except the PGA Tour, which might’ve been more interesting than some of the stuff they did talk about.

        2) Saints 20, Eagles 14— Philly led 14-0 early, but Saints scored on a drive extended by a fake punt, and they controlled the game from that point on. New Orleans outgained the Eagles 420-250; Philly has a very interesting offseason ahead of it. What to do about Nick Foles?

Saints’ WR Michael Thomas is really good; he was the 6th WR taken (47th player overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft, which is why the draft is so damn interesting. Inexact science.

        1) Somewhere in this great country, there is a gambler who had Seton Hall (-4) Thursday and Maryland (-5) Friday. Both sides lost vs the spread on last-second 3-pointers; gambling is difficult, and in cases like these two games, it can be cruel.

        • Monday's Tip Sheet
          Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Pelicans at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Los Angeles (24-18 SU, 24-18 ATS) has been riding a roller coaster of late as the Clippers have won two straight, lost two straight, won three in a row, and have currently dropped consecutive games in this stretch since Christmas. Following a 21-point setback at Denver on Thursday, the Clippers returned home and fell to old friend Blake Griffin and the Pistons on Saturday afternoon, 109-104 as seven-point favorites. Three Clippers finished with 20 points or more, but couldn’t slow down Griffin, who torched Los Angeles for 44 points in his first road game against his former team since getting traded last season.

The Pelicans (20-23 SU, 19-24 ATS) started their five-game road trip with a loss on Saturday at Minnesota, 110-106 as a short favorite. New Orleans was limited to 5-of-25 shooting from three-point range, while scoring only 17 points in the fourth quarter. Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 30 points and 14 rebounds, but New Orleans fell to 1-6 in the last seven games away from Smoothie King Center.

These two Western Conference squads have split a pair of matchups in New Orleans this season. The Pelicans held off the Clippers in the first matchup in October, 116-109, but finished UNDER the total of 237. L.A. picked up revenge in the second meeting, 129-126 as 1 ½-point underdogs in December. The Clippers shot 59% from the floor, led by 27 points from Tobias Harris, as the game eclipsed the total of 234 ½. Last season, the Pelicans captured both meetings at Staples Center, while New Orleans is 4-2 in the past six matchups since the start of the 2017-18 season.

          Unrested Rockets

Houston (24-18 SU, 21-20-1 ATS) dropped to 3-8 ATS the last 11 games as a road favorite following Sunday’s 116-109 setback at Orlando. The Rockets squandered a 12-point lead, while getting outscored in each of the last three quarters to a Magic club that played on the second of a back-to-back after beating Boston on Saturday. James Harden scored 38 points for Houston, but somehow shot 1-of-17 from three-point range, as the Rockets converted 10-of-42 attempts from downtown.

The Rockets seek their third home win this season with no rest, while also going for their third victory against the Grizzlies (19-23 SU, 18-24 ATS). Memphis has dropped seven of its past eight games, including Saturday’s 112-108 defeat at Miami to fall to 1-8 in the previous nine contests away from FedEx Forum. Now, the Grizzlies will be trying to break through against the Rockets for the first time this season as each of the first two meetings finished OVER the total and Houston grabbed the cover as a favorite each time.

          Monday, Monday

For the second consecutive Monday, the Celtics and Nets are hooking up. Boston (25-17 SU, 22-20 ATS) cruised past Brooklyn (21-23 SU, 23-21 ATS) a week ago at TD Garden, 116-95 to easily cash as 10 ½-point favorites. The Celtics used balanced scoring as eight different players posted double-figures, paced by Kyrie Irving’s 17 points, while Boston put up at least 30 points in three different quarters. However, the Celtics look to finish off their three-game road trip with a win after losing in the first two stops at Miami and Orlando as a favorite.

The Nets return to Barclays Center where they have won eight of their last nine games. Brooklyn tries to rebound after getting crushed at Toronto on Friday, 122-105 to suffer their third loss in the last month as a double-digit road underdog. The Nets have covered four of their last five as a home underdog, but Brooklyn has dropped 10 consecutive meetings with Boston since January 16, including five straight home defeats.

          Staying Golden

The Kings (22-21 SU, 25-18 ATS) look to close out a perfect 3-0 homestand at Golden 1 Center following victories over the Pistons and Hornets. Sacramento has lost seven of its past 11 home contests to Western Conference opponents, including a 113-108 overtime setback to Portland (26-18 SU, 23-21 ATS) on New Year’s Day. The Kings are riding a four-game UNDER streak, while holding three straight foes to 102 points or fewer at home.

The Blazers head to Sacramento with no rest after suffering a 116-113 defeat at Denver on Sunday night. That loss ended a four-game skid, although Portland cashed as 4 ½-point underdogs to improve to 6-2 ATS the past eight contests. Portland has captured four consecutive meetings with Sacramento since last season, while limiting the Kings to 38% shooting back on January 1. The Blazers have seen success with no rest this season by posting a 4-2 SU/ATS mark, but both losses came away from the Moda Center.

          Lotte of Losses

Things have unraveled for the Hornets (19-23 SU, 20-22 ATS) on their six-game road trip as Charlotte has posted a 1-4 SU/ATS record in the first five contests. Three of the four losses have come by double-digits, while being held to 97 points or less in the last two defeats at Portland and Sacramento. Since starting the season at 2-0 on the road, the Hornets have dropped 15 of the past 18 games at Spectrum Center, while posting a 2-9 ATS mark in the last 11 on the highway.

Charlotte travels to San Antonio to face the Spurs (25-19 SU, 26-17-1 ATS), who have won seven straight games at AT&T Center. The Spurs dropped the back-end of a home-and-home set with Oklahoma City on Saturday, 122-112, two nights after a thrilling a double-overtime win over the Thunder. San Antonio fell to 15-4 ATS the last 19 games overall, but the Spurs have covered in each of their last 15 home wins dating back to November.

          Back on Track

The Jazz (23-21 SU, 22-21-1 ATS) have stepped up following an up and down start to the season, as Utah is 9-4 the last 13 games to pull above the .500 mark. Utah seeks a perfect 4-0 homestand after winning the first three games against the Magic, Lakers, and Bulls, while winning five of the past six at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The Jazz failed to cash in Saturday’s 110-102 victory over Chicago as 12-point favorites as Utah trailed by one point heading into the fourth quarter.

The Pistons (18-23 SU, 18-22-1 ATS) look to capitalize off Saturday’s 109-104 victory over the Clippers as seven-point underdogs. Detroit has dropped five consecutive matchups with Utah since 2017, including a 110-105 setback at Little Caesars Arena on January 5. The Pistons blew an early 18-point lead after one quarter as Detroit fell to 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings with Utah, while they look to end a five-game losing streak off a win.

                        In an ideal spot

Boston's Al Horford is in an excellent spot tonight as the Celtics play against a Nets side surrendering 25.9 points on 54 percent shooting, and 18.1 rebounds a game to opposing centers. Horford’s minutes have been inconsistent this year, but when on the court he is averaging 11.6 points a game on 49.8 percent shooting. Look for Horford to take advantage of today's matchup and bet Over his total of 25.5 points, rebounds, and assists.

                        Houston, we have a problem

The Grizzlies travel to Houston to take on a Rockets team but both will be shorthanded. The Grizzlies will be without Chandler Parsons, Kyle Anderson and Dillon Brooks. Houston will once again be without Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, and now Clint Capela.

Losing Capela is a huge blow for the Rockets and might open up the floor for some offensive rebounds. With the Rockets surrendering an average of 22.9 points on 54.2 percent shooting and 14.7 rebounds per game to opposing centers, look for Marc Gasol to take advantage of Capela's absence and back Over his rebounding total of 8.5.

                        Owning the head-to-head

The Hornets have struggled recently losing seven of their last 10 games and have posted a 5-15 away record on the season. Today they take on a Spurs team who have owned the head-to-head series posting a 9-1 record and winning 14 of the last 15 matchups.

The Spurs have lost two of their most recent three after posting five straight victories but are in a prime position to bounce back today. Take them to cover as 8-point home favorites.

                        Trending towards the Under

Both the Pistons and Jazz rank towards the bottom half of the league in first-half points per game, with Detroit averaging 53.5 and the Jazz 53.3. The Pistons have Zaza Pachulia listed as doubtful, and Ish Smith and Blake Griffin appearing on the injury report as probable. The Jazz will be without Ricky Rubio, Dante Exum and Raul Neto.

With the Under hitting in seven of the last eight in the head-to-head, five straight road games for the Pistons, and eight of Utah's last ten at home, look for scoring to be tough to come by. Back Under the first half total of 106.5.

                        Two potent offenses

The Pelicans and Clippers enter today with the third and fourth ranked offenses in points per game with the Pelicans averaging 116.9 on 48.2 percent shooting, and the Clippers 115.3 on 47.4 percent shooting. Defensively neither team has been good, with the Clippers allowing 114.2 points a game and the Pelicans 114.7. There should be lots of points to go around.

In their two games against the Pelicans so far this season, the Clipper's Tobias Harris played very well. He shot 8 of 16 from the floor for 26 points in the first contest, and then went 10 of 16 for 27 points the second time around. Look for him to once again find success and back Over his point total of 20.5.

                          • Harden scores season-high 57 as Rockets top Grizzlies 112-94
                            January 14, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored a season-high 57 points to carry the short-handed Houston Rockets to a 112-94 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night.

The reigning MVP extended his streak of 30-point games to 17 by halftime, pouring in 36 points over the first two quarters to put Houston on top. It's the longest such streak since Wilt Chamberlain had 20 straight games of at least 30 points in 1964.

It's the franchise-record 14th time Harden has scored 40 this season and the eighth time in his last 11 games. It's the third time he's topped 50 points this season and the 12th time in his career. He surpassed his previous season best of 54 against Washington and fell just shy of the career-high and club-record 60 points he scored last January against Orlando.

Garrett Temple and Mike Conley scored 14 each for the Grizzlies, who lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Harden's big game came on a night when the Rockets were without three starters, as center Clint Capela joined Chris Paul and Eric Gordon on the injured list after hurting his right thumb Sunday.

Harden scored 38 points Sunday in a loss to Orlando despite going 1 for 17 from 3-point range. This time, he made his first two 3s and finished 6 of 15. He also hit 15 of 17 free throws and pulled down nine rebounds.

                            HORNETS 108, SPURS 93

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 33 points and Tony Parker enjoyed a triumphant return to San Antonio as Charlotte snapped the Spurs' seven-game home winning streak.

Parker had eight points, four assists and three rebounds in his first game back in San Antonio after signing with the Hornets during the offseason.

Jeremy Lamb added 19 points for Charlotte, which ended a three-game skid. The Hornets also stopped an 11-game slide in San Antonio.

LaMarcus Aldridge led the Spurs with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spurs honored Parker before the game with a two-minute video of his career highlights during 17 seasons in San Antonio, including his four NBA championships with the team. The crowd roared in appreciation, chanting ''Tony! Tony! Tony!''

                            NETS 109, CELTICS 102

NEW YORK (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 18 of his 34 points in the third quarter and Brooklyn ended a 10-game losing streak to Boston, sending the Celtics to a winless three-game road trip.

With Kyrie Irving nursing a bruised right quadriceps, the Nets broke open the game with a 15-0 run in the third and outscored the Celtics 44-21 in the period.

Jarrett Allen added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Nets, who have won nine of their last 10 home games. Rookie forward Rodions Kurucs also scored 19.

Jayson Tatum had 34 points for the Celtics, who dropped games at Miami and Orlando to start their trip. Jaylen Brown added 22.

Boston also played without Marcus Smart because of an illness.

                            JAZZ 100, PISTONS 94

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 28 points and Rudy Gobert tied a career high with 25 rebounds to propel Utah past Detroit.

Kyle Korver had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, to help the Jazz win for the sixth time in seven games. Gobert finished with 18 points and two blocks. Mitchell has poured in at least 26 points in six consecutive games, the best such stretch of his career.

Utah has won five straight against the Pistons and 22 of 26.

Blake Griffin scored 19 points and Andre Drummond contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost five of six.

                            KINGS 115, TRAIL BLAZERS 107

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - De'Aaron Fox scored 16 points and made a key 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining as Sacramento beat Portland.

Fox also had nine assists, Buddy Hield scored 19 points and Marvin Bagley III added 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Kings have won three straight and four of five.

Damian Lillard had 35 points to become the fastest player in Portland history to reach 12,000 for his career. Jusuf Nurkic had 13 points and 11 rebounds. CJ McCollum scored six points on 2-of-14 shooting.

The Trail Blazers, playing the second half of a back-to-back, have lost two straight since winning four in a row.

                                — Valparaiso is 4-1 in games decided by 5 or fewer points, or in OT.
                                — Illinois State is 52-24 in this league the last five years, but hasn’t made NCAA’s since 1998- they’re 2-2 in Valley so far this year.
                                — #95 Loyola is only team ranked above #136 in country, so Arch Madness will determine the only bid from this league.

                                — Have only been three conference games so much, so hard to tell a lot so far.

                                — Boise State/UNLV are both 3-0, but Nevada/Fresno are two best teams.

                                — This is a one-bid league unless Nevada gets upset in conference tourney.

                                — This league has only two teams in top 200 in country in experience.

                                — Butler lost four of last five games, last two by one point each.
                                — Marquette/Villanova look good for NCAA’s; lot of bubble teams elsewhere.
