Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David
Wild night in the NBA on Wednesday as favorites posted an 8-2 straight up and 7-3 against the spread record. While it appeared that the bettors riding the ‘chalk’ were smoking cigars at the end of the night, they certainly had to sweat for a full 48 minutes as plenty of big underdogs collapsed.
For those bettors playing the Hawks, Cavaliers or Magic – please accept our apologies. All three of those teams held commanding leads but the trio was outscored by 23, 20 and 30 points respectively in the second-half. Total players watched the ‘under’ go 6-4.
Four games on the slate tonight, which includes the nationally televised double-header on TNT. Before we break down the games, check out the latest Win Total Update. It provides an informed look at which teams have surpassed the expectations of the oddsmakers so far and also shows you have underachieved.
Boston (25-15 SU, 22-18 ATS) at Miami (19-20 SU, 21-18 ATS)
Possible letdown game for Boston, who just blasted Indiana 135-108 as a 7 ½-point home favorite on Tuesday. Including that win, the Celtics have now won and covered four straight games with all of the outcomes coming by double digits.
BookMaker sent out Boston as a 1 ½-point road favorite on Wednesday and the number has been pushed up to -2 as of Thursday morning. Keep in mind that the Celtics have struggled on zero days rest this season, going 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS. Defensively, they haven’t been great (107.5 PPG) in the back-to-back spots and that lack of effort has helped the ‘over’ go 4-2.
Miami has been very tough to figure out this season and despite owning a losing record, the club still sits in first place of the Southeast Division and that group might be lucky to get one playoff bid this April.
The Heat enter this matchup off back-to-back losses, an embarrassing 24-point blowout (106-82) at Atlanta on Sunday and a close call (103-99) at home to Denver on Tuesday. Including those setbacks, the club is 4-4 in its last eight but all four wins came against teams below .500. Versus winning teams, Miami has struggled to a 5-8 mark this season but a couple of them came at home recently against Houston and Milwaukee. Again, tough to figure out which Heat team shows up.
Boston was a great bet on the road last season (28-13) but is just 10-10 away from home in this campaign. Fortunately for the Celtics, the Heat haven’t played well at home this season (9-12 SU, 9-12 ATS). However, it’s managed to produce decent numbers (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) when catching points at American Airlines Arena.
This will be the first encounter between the pair this season. In the 2017-18 slate, the Heat won and covered two of their three meetings with the Celtics only win coming in Miami. Prior to that run, the Heat has lost seven straight games to Boston, three of those setbacks coming at home.
The total opened 209 and caught some early steam, pushing the number to 212. The Celtics have leaned to the ‘over’ (25-15) this season and they’ve seen eight of their last 10 on the road cash to the high side.
TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 7:05 p.m. ET.
L.A. Clippers (24-16 SU, 24-16 ATS) at Denver (27-12 SU, 22-17 ATS)
This is a weird scheduling spot for the Clippers, who will break up a six-game homestand with a trip to Denver. The Nuggets are also in a dicey spot after playing a back-to-back set at Houston and Miami on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
The pair already played two games at the Staples Center this season and they split those contests. Denver captured a 107-98 win in the season opener on Oct. 17 before Los Angeles avenged that setback with a 132-111 win on Dec. 22.
Oddsmakers sent out Denver -5 ½ with a total of 226 for “Round Three.” This is a tough matchup to figure out because both clubs have been solid for bettors yet they do appear to look like bullies on paper. The Clippers (15-5) and Nuggets (17-5) have both dominated teams below .500 this season, which isn’t a bad thing but it sets you up to be exposed against quality opponents.
Denver (16-3 SU, 13-6 ATS) has been very steady at the Pepsi Center and it has won its last 10 at this venue, while covering eight of those victories. The Clippers have stayed the course on the road (10-10 SU, 11-9 ATS) this season, but the ‘bully’ word appears again for me. Of those 10 wins, only three came against winning clubs – Lakers (LeBron James out), Trail Blazers and Rockets (Chris Paul out).
Oklahoma City (25-15 SU, 22-18 ATS) at San Antonio (24-18 SU, 25-16-1 ATS)
This is the first game of a home-and-home series as the pair will meet again in Oklahoma City on Friday. Last night, San Antonio got stunned 96-86 at Memphis as a 2 ½-point favorite. The Grizzlies had been in terrible form (0-6 last 6) and the majority of bettors were riding San Antonio blindly. Prior to that loss, the Spurs had won and covered five straight games.
Knowing the Spurs haven’t dropped two straight losses since early December certainly gives you a confidence to back them on Thursday. While that’s a solid reason, looking at San Antonio’s recent form at home may have you running to the betting counter. Head coach Gregg Popovich and company have won and covered six straight and 11 of their last 12 games at the AT&T Center. What’s really amazing about the run for the Spurs is that the lone loss came to the Chicago Bulls (98-93) on Dec. 15.
BookMaker opened the Spurs as one-point favorites but the line has flip-flopped and Oklahoma City is -1 ½ as of Thursday morning. San Antonio was humbled last night in Memphis and playing on zero days rest (1-6 SU, 3-4 ATS) hasn’t worked out for the team this season.
The Thunder do enter this game off two straight losses, both coming at home and as large favorites to a pair of losing clubs in the Wizards (116-98) and Timberwolves (119-117). Oklahoma City has gone 12-9 both SU and ATS on the road this season and that includes a 5-2 run over its last seven away games.
Last season, the home team won all four of the meetings in this series. The Spurs went 3-1 ATS and the ‘under’ went 3-1 as well. Make a note that three of the four games were decided by four points or less.
Tip-off is slated for 9:35 p.m. ET and TNT will provide national coverage.
Detroit (17-22 SU, 17-21-1 ATS) at Sacramento (20-21 SU, 23-17-1 ATS)
For the late-night tip, Sacramento opened as a five-point home favorite over Detroit and it’s been solid in this role, going 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS. Going back to last season, the Kings have gone 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in their last eight when laying points at home and the ‘under’ has gone 7-1 in those games.
As noted above, check out the Win Total Update and you’ll see how much of a surprise the Kings have been this season. They have come back to earth since Christmas, going 2-6 in their last eight games and they could easily be 1-7 if it wasn’t for a buzzer-beater victory over the Lakers.
They enter this game off a 115-111 loss at Phoenix on Tuesday and the offense fell apart in the second-half, scoring 39 total points after putting 72 on the board in the first 24 minutes. Dropping games to clubs below .500 hasn’t been common for Sacramento, who has helped itself with a 14-4 mark versus winning teams this season.
Fortunately for Sacramento, it will be playing another squad below .500 and a slumping one in Detroit, who lost its third straight game last night in a 113-100 result against the L.A. Lakers. After going 13-7 in the first 20 games of the season, everybody was ripping former coach Stan Van Gundy and praising new Detroit leader Dwane Casey. Sure enough, we’ve started to see the same squad from last season show up as they’ve gone 4-15 in their last 19 games.
Including the setback to L.A. yesterday, Detroit is now 5-6 SU and 6-5 ATS versus the Western Conference and that includes a 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS mark on the road. The Pistons haven’t faced many back-to-back situations but they’re a respectable 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS, while the ‘under’ has gone 3-1.
Last season, Detroit won and covered both meetings against Sacramento which included a 106-90 win as a 3 ½-point road favorite.
The total (224 ½) seems a little high even though Sacramento remains the best ‘over’ bet (27-14) this season. At home, the high side is only 11-10 and Detroit has leaned to the ‘under’ (20-18-1) overall this season.Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

Loving that home court advantage
The Nuggets have been dominant at home all season posting a 16-3 record. Tonight Denver meets a Clippers team that is .500 on the road. When these two teams met three weeks ago it was the Clippers who defeated the Nuggets handily 132-111 to give both teams a win in the season series.
With the Nuggets averaging 112.8 points per game on their home court, and holding opponents to only 101.7, look for Denver to continue their dominance and cover as 5-point favorites at home.
Closely contested
The Spurs have also been a dominant team at home this season posting a 17-5 record. Today they host a Thunder team who have lost two straight outright as 10-point, and 8-point favorites.
With the Spurs winning four of the last five versus the Thunder, look for them to squeak out a win as 1.5-point underdogs versus a Thunder team struggling to get key defensive stops as of late.
Primed for a big night
Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan is having one of his best seasons ever averaging 22.3 points per game on 47.3 percent shooting. He is averaging 6.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists a game, and has logged 27 games with 20 or more points, five with 10 or more rebounds and three with 10 or more assists.
Today he is in a very favorable matchup versus a Thunder squad surrendering an average of 24 points a game and 5.2 assists to opposing shooting guards. Back DeRozan Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 34.5.
Focusing on defense
The Celtics travel to Miami fresh off a 135-108 route of the Pacers last night. The Celtics scored 30 or more points in three straight quarters and shot 56.8 percent as a team against Indiana. They play a Heat team who has lost two straight and hold a 9-12 record this season on their home court.
Defensively, both teams rank in the top 10 in opponent points per game allowing under 106, and rank second and third in terms of opponent shooting percentage with the Heat at 43.9 and the Celtics 44.2. Look for both teams to place an emphasis on defense and force some tough shots. Take Under the total of 213.
Bounce back effort
The Pistons have struggled recently losing six of their last seven contests, but find themselves in a winnable game today versus the Kings. Detroit has won seven of their last 10 games against Sacramento. The Kings are surrendering an average of 116.4 points a game with opponents shooting 47.2 percent from the field.
Detroit’s Andre Drummond struggled last night shooting 2-12 from the floor, but is in an excellent spot today versus a Kings team surrendering 23.3 points on 57 percent shooting, and 19.2 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Take Drummond Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 33.5.

Nikola Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets beat Clippers
January 10, 2019
By The Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge scored a career-high 56 points and the San Antonio Spurs overcame Russell Westbrook's triple-double with 24 points, 24 rebounds and 13 assists and outlasted the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 154-147 victory in double-overtime on Thursday night.
Aldridge had seven points in the second overtime and Derrick White added four points, a steal and a block of Jerami Grant at the rim with San Antonio up 148-144 with less than 2 minutes remaining. White finished with 23 points and Marco Belinelli made all five of his 3-point attempts while scoring 19 points for the Spurs, who have won seven straight at home.
San Antonio made its first 14 3-pointers to set a franchise record - but still needed two overtime periods to topple Oklahoma City.
Aldridge surpassed his previous career high of 45 points, which he set against Utah on March 23, 2018.
The Thunder lost their seventh straight in San Antonio despite Westbrook's huge game. Paul George scored 30 points and Grant added 25 points and 12 rebounds, but fouled out with 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
NUGGETS 121, CLIPPERS 100
DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 18 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his 21st career triple-double and the Nuggets extended their home winning streak to 11 with a victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Jamal Murray scored 23 points, and Mason Plumlee added a season-high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Western Conference-leading Nuggets. They're 17-3 at home.
Lou Williams led the Clippers with 19 points, and Danilo Gallinari had 18 against his former team.
HEAT 115, CELTICS 99

Derrick Jones Jr. scored 14 points, and Justise Winslow finished with 13 points and a career-best 11 assists. Miami had 33 assists on 45 field goals.
Kyrie Irving had 22 points. for the Celtics. After scoring a season-high 135 points a night earlier in a home victory over Indiana, they were held under 100 for only the fourth time this season.
KINGS 112, PISTONS 102
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 18 points, Willie Cauley-Stein had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Kings beat the Detroit Pistons with Blake Griffin out for rest.
Iman Shumpert had 13 points and De'Aaron Fox had 12 points and six assists for the Kings, who had lost five of six.

Friday’s 6-pack
More early over/under baseball totals for 2019:
— St Louis Cardinals, Washington Nationals 88.5
— Tampa Bay Rays 85.5
— Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins 84
— Brewers, Angels, Mets 83.5
— Oakland A’s, Philadelphia Phillies 83
— Colorado Rockies 82
Quote of the Day
“We’ll look at all the options. We’re not going to release him, that’s not on the table. But I will say all other options are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled and [we] have him back on the team next year, we’re a long way from thinking that can happen. We’re not closing the door on anything at this point.”
Steelers’ president Art Rooney II, talking about Antonio Brown
Friday’s quiz
Where did Kawhi Leonard play his college basketball?
Thursday’s quiz
In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the Saints played most of their home games in the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner plays GM of the Cleveland Browns, Denis Leary plays the Browns’ head coach.
*************************
Friday’s List of 13: Basketball notes from this week……
13) Marquette 106, Creighton 104 OT— Bluejays totally butchered game management at end of regulation; they had ball out of bounds with 0:00.8 left, up 3 points- they throw the ball the length of the court, but it goes out of bounds without being touched, then Marquette drains a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to force OT.
All they had to do was flip the ball to a Marquette player inside the arc and the game was over, but thats not what happened.
Marquette’s Markus Howard scored 53 points, most ever in a Big East game; he nailed 10-14 treys, 13-15 on foul line. Horrific home loss for Creighton.
12) Virginia Tech 52, Georgia Tech 49— Look at this score, then you remember that Markus Howard scored 53 by himself at Creighton. Different styles of play, for sure.
11) UCLA 87, Oregon 84 OT— Staggering collapse by the Ducks, who led 76-68 with 0:44 left in regulation- it was 72-59 with 2:30 left. Bruins are 3-0 under interim coach Murry Bartow.
10) Villanova 76, St John’s 71— Red Storm led by 13 early, by 5 with 3:48 left, but faded badly down stretch and lost for second time in four Big East games. Villanova ended the game on a decisive 14-4 run.
Sign of times; there were 67 3-pointers taken in this game, 48 2-pointers, 30 foul shots. Red Storm basically played only six guys (a 7th guy played 5:00). 67 possessions; slow tempo, lot of jump shots late in the shot clock.
9) Hofstra 93, William & Mary 90, 3OT—Visiting Pride led by 10 at the half, survived in triple OT— four Hofstra kids played 42:00+, with Wright-Foreman playing whole 55:00. Four guys on W&M played 44:00.
Bad beat of the night: Northeastern (-9) won/covered 81-70 at Elon, but in OT. If you have the underdog +9 and the game goes overtime, you’re supposed to win.
8) ESPN has obviously told his game analysts to hype up Zion Williamson at every chance, the way they did with Trey Young LY and Ben Simmons the year he was at LSU.
Williamson doesn’t need the hype, he is really good, but ESPN has this new thing where they seem to choose one player a year and they hype him up so much that you wind up rooting against him.
7) Warriors 122, Knicks 95— Klay Thompson scored 43 points for the Warriors Tuesday, on 29 shots. On the 29 touches where he shot, Thompson dribbled a total of four times. Four.
6) Pitt 89, Louisville 86 OT— Panthers end a 23-game ACC regular season losing streak. Jeff Capel has Pitt heading in the right direction, and he’s done it quickly.
5) Eastern Michigan 84, Ball State 82, 2OT— Ball’s Trey Moses had 16 points, 10 assists, but he was 4-15 on the foul line in a game the Cardinals led by 3 in the last minute of regulation. Tough way to lose; Ball State was 15-30 on foul line in a 2-point loss.
4) Ole Miss 82, Auburn 67— Rebels outscored Auburn 27-9 on foul line, never trailed in moving to 12-2 under new coach Kermit Davis, who built a mid-major power at Middle Tennessee the last few years.
3) Quinnipiac 89, Monmouth 83, 2OT— Bobcats led 63-49 with 1:36 to play, blew the lead, as Monmouth somehow scored 34 points in last 11:36 of this game, but still lost. Quinnipiac was -8 (22-14) in turnovers, but still got the win.
2) Kansas State 71, West Virginia 69— Wildcats trailed 20-3 early, by 21 with 17:46 left, but rallied to hand the Mountaineers their third straight Big X loss. West Virginia is 0-3 in its conference for first time since an 0-6 start in the ’02 Big East.
1) There were 32 games in the Las Vegas rotation Wednesday night; in 8 of the 32 games, the team that lost had a lead of 10+ points at some point in the game; five of those teams led by 14+ points at one point. Lot of runs/droughts in college games these days.Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

Friday's Essentials
Tony Mejia
Game of the Night - Chicago at Golden State (-15.5, 221.5) at Portland, 10:35 ET
Friday night’s card is filled with matchups where the home team is clearly favored. Of the nine contests, five hosts are laying nine or more points, requiring a double-digit win to pull off a cover. There’s only one game where the spread is inside five points, but that matchup pits last-place teams as the Timberwolves look to get back to .500 against the visiting Mavericks.
I’ll look at all of the night’s matchups below, but wanted to touch on the game expected to be the biggest blowout just to see if there’s any value in taking 15.5 points with the visiting Bulls in their lone visit to Oakland.
The Warriors hung 149 points in a 25-point win when these teams squared off in Chicago back on Oct. 29. Klay Thompson, who comes off a tremendous shooting game against New York, scored 52 points against the Bulls, setting an NBA record with 14 3-pointers.
Last season’s visit to Oracle produced a 143-94 loss. When it came through in February of 2017, Chicago lost 123-92. It has lost six of seven in this series.
Golden State was saddled with its largest spread of the NBA season on Tuesday night and covered the 17 points handily in an 122-95 victory over the Knicks. The Warriors built up a lead that got up to 33 points and won every quarter, riding a 43-point night from Thompson. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant actually combined to shoot just 5-for-19 from 3-point range while Curry finished 5-for-19 from the field on his own, so the carnage would’ve been even worse had he shot his typical percentage. The 27-point margin of victory was the Warriors’ second-largest of the season, trailing only a 125-97 rout of Portland on Nov. 23 in terms of dominance.
While New York has lost 15 of 17, Chicago has dropped 22 of 28, including five straight. This will be the Bulls’ 29th consecutive game as an underdog. They’re 0-11 straight up as a double-digit ‘dog and have covered only three times in those contests. Their biggest upset came in a 98-93 win in San Antonio, which closed as a 9.5-point ‘chalk’ back on Dec. 15, in a game where they ralled from a 21-point deficit by winning the second half 55-31.
Neither leading scorer Zach LaVine nor top reserve Bobby Portis participated in that game, while Lauri Markkanen, Kris Dunn and Portis were absent in the October clash against the Warriors. Justin Holiday and Cameron Payne started in that loss but have since been moved to different teams. Holiday is now with the Grizzlies and Payne is with the Cavs.
Dunn, the team’s customary point guard and arguably the top backcourt asset due to his effectiveness on both sides of the ball, has dished out seven assists in nine of the last 11 games and has scored in double-figures in 11 of 12 since returning from an MCL sprain that cost him nearly two months. He’ll make Curry and Thompson work far harder than they had to in Chicago. LaVine and reserve guard Antonio Blakeney each scored 21 points in the 25-point loss to the Warriors, shooting a combined 6-for-12 from 3-point range. LaVine is 'probable' after suffering an ankle sprain.
The presence of Markkanen and Portis should afford their guards the luxury of more space to work with, so we should see improvement over the next few weeks if everyone can stay healthy. Dunn, LaVine, Markkanen, Portis and rookie Wendell Carter, Jr. have played in only four contests this season, losing them all. The Bulls are 5-12 under new head coach Jim Boylen, who replaced Fred Hoiberg in early December. Chicago’s current five-game losing streak is its second-largest of the season. The Bulls have lost seven games by at least 25 points.
This grueling five-game Western road swing they’re embarked upon opened with a 124-112 loss in Portland on Wednesday, allowing the Blazers to shoot nearly 57 percent while being outscored off the bench 56-41. Chicago’s trip continues on Saturday night against the Jazz before continuing Tuesday against the Lakers and concluding next Thursday in Denver. The Bulls will be heavy underdogs in each of the contests, though probably not by as many points as they’re getting tonight.
The Warriors will play seven of their next eight games after this one on the road and will visit Dallas on Sunday night. They’re expected to have one more home game before the DeMarcus Cousins experience begin since the All-Star center isn’t expected to make his debut until after Jan. 16 matchup against the Pelicans. Everyone will be asked to make some concessions to get him up to speed by the postseason, so this could be one of the final games where we’re seeing the defending champs as we know them.
The Dubs have only won four of their last eight home games and were 1-9 against the spread at Oracle prior to Wednesday’s rout of the Knicks. Incredibly, they haven’t covered consecutive games at home since Nov. 3. They lost last year’s 42nd game in Oakland against the Clippers last season, falling to 33-9. Their 27-14 record the Warriors’ worst at the halfway point since the 2013-14 season, the team’s last with Mark Jackson at the helm. They open Friday’s action 1.5 games behind the Nuggets for the top record in the Western Conference. Chicago is tied with New York at 10-31 for the third-worst mark in the entire NBA, ranking ahead of only Cleveland (8-34) and Phoenix (10-33).
Best of the Rest
Milwaukee at Washington, 7:05 p.m. ET: The Bucks approach the halfway point of their season looking for their 30th win as they try to increase the NBA’s highest winning percentage. Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to play despite a hip issue. Milwaukee is the only team in the league with eight wins over its last 10 contests and opened a three-game road trip with an impressive victory in Houston. This will be its first meeting of the season against the Wizards, who won the last encounter between the teams last February. Washington is 4-3 since losing John Wall to heel surgery and come off an upset of the 76ers to improve to 12-7 at home. Otto Porter scored 23 points off the bench and will look to slow down Greek Freak and friends behind Trevor Ariza and Jeff Green, both of whom have played well since Markieff Morris was lost for at least six weeks due to a neck injury. The Wizards shot a season-best 48 percent (13-for-27) from 3-point range with Bradley Beal tying a season-best by shooting 6-for-11. He’s averaging 28.8 points over the last five games.
Atlanta at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m. ET: The 76ers had their four-game win streak snapped in D.C. but will look to improve on their NBA-best home record (18-3) in order to bounce back. Philadelphia has only lost back-to-back games twice this season and cruised in its first meeting with the Hawks back on Oct. 29, outrebounding them 64-47 in a 113-92 rout. Kent Bazemore led Atlanta in scoring in that game with 18 points but is out indefinitely due to an ankle injury. The 76ers have been without guard J.J. Redick due to a back injury but may get him back tonight. Rookie shooter Landry Shamet hit eight 3-pointers filling in for Redick earlier this week and is listed as probable.
Indiana at New York, 7:35 p.m. ET, ESPN: The Pacers have followed up a 5-0 run against the spread with an 0-5 mark after getting blown out 135-108 in Boston on Wednesday. Indiana is looking to close out a five-game road swing with a 3-2 mark by taking care of business at Madison Square Garden. Center Myles Turner has been sidelined with a shoulder injury this week, which has really impacted the Indiana defense throughout his three-game absence. The Pacers have allowed 123.7 points, losing two of three to the Raptors and Celtics. He’s questionable to return tonight. Point guard Darren Collison has been playing though a leg injury and should continue at the controls. New York has dropped nine of 10 and list center Enes Kanter as questionable due to illness. He paced the Knicks with 20 points and 15 boards in their 110-99 Dec. 16 loss in Indiana but may be on the trade block and won’t accompany the team to Europe next week even if he is still on the roster. If he doesn’t play, center Luke Kornet should get additional playing time. The Pacers have seen their last seven games go ‘over’ the posted total.
Brooklyn at Toronto, 7:35 p.m. ET: The Nets have gotten Joe Harris and DeMarre Carroll back in the lineup and may see shooting guard Allen Crabbe return soon, so they’re in good shape as they attempt to build on a stretch that has seen them win four of five outright to improve to 13-4 since Dec. 7. This run began with a 106-105 OT upset of the Raptors in Brooklyn as an 8.5-point underdog in which they held a 60-41 advantage on the glass and got 29 points from D’Angelo Russell. Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry played together for the first time in 2019 in Tuesday’s 104-101 win over the Hawks that they secured due to a franchise-record 18 steals. Toronto has won six in a row at home against the Nets and prevailed in 12 of the last 13 matchups.
Cleveland at Houston, 8:05 p.m. ET: The Cavs have the fewest victories in the NBA, but one of their victims were the Rockets, who they took down at the Q as a 6.5-point underdog on Nov. 24. Cleveland won 117-108 behind 29 points from rookie point guard Collin Sexton and a 20-rebound game from Tristan Thompson. James Harden scored 40 points and dished out 13 assists in the loss and will try and avoid a sweep by helping hand Cleveland its 12th consecutive defeat. Although Sexton and Thompson will be in the lineup, top reserve forward Larry Nance, Jr. (knee) remains out and wing scorer Rodney Hood (achilles) is questionable to return to the lineup. Jordan Clarkson has been the primary catalyst for the Cavs of late despite coming off the bench and is his team’s best shot at securing a cover here since the Rockets remain limited on depth. Chris Paul (hamstring) and Eric Gordon (knee) are still out. Cleveland’s last five games have all surpassed the posted total.
Dallas at Minnesota, 8:05 p.m. ET: Ryan Saunders debuted as Timberwolves’ interim head coach with an upset victory over Oklahoma City. If Andrew Wiggins can continue to play well, Minnesota has a chance of overcoming all the drama caused by the now-traded Jimmy Butler and now-fired Tom Thibodeau to make consecutive playoff appearances. He scored 40 against the Thunder. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old son of late Minnesota favorite Flip Saunders will make his home debut with everyone on the roster firmly in his corner, so this could be an emotional night at Target Center. Derrick Rose is scheduled to return from an ankle injury to try and help the Timberwolves match a season-best with a fourth straight win to climb back to .500. Dallas is an NBA-worst 3-18 on the road but beat the Timberwolves140-136 back on Oct. 20 thanks to 26 points from rookie Luka Doncic. Mavs point guard Dennis Smith, Jr. has already been ruled out due to a back issue, so J.J. Barea will likely get more minutes and rookie Jalen Brunson is likely to start. The ‘over’ is on an 11-1 run in Minnesota games. Meanwhile, the under is 7-0-1 in Dallas’ last eight contests.
L.A. Lakers at Utah, 10:05 p.m. ET, ESPN: LeBron James didn’t make the trip to Salt Lake City, so Kyle Kuzma will be in the spotlight as he returns to his old college stomping grounds. Jae Crowder will likely be assigned to slow down the second-year forward as he looks to follow up scoring 41 points in just three quarters to help L.A. crush the Pistons on Wednesday night. With Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball enjoying productive weeks, this could be a big week in the development of the Lakers’ young supporting cast. Currently, the Lakers reside in the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, two games up on the Kings and these Jazz. Utah will be without point guards Ricky Rubio (thigh) and Dante Exum (ankle), so Brazilian Raul Neto is likely to start and play a major role alongside Donovan Mitchell, who should be the primary ball handler. After a dreadful start to his sophomore season in the pros, Mitchell is averaging 24.4 points and 4.2 assists this month and is shooting 16-for-34 from 3-point range, a marked improvement. Utah swept L.A. last season and will be looking to get back on track in the series after suffering a 90-83 loss at Staples in the only meeting of the season back on Nov. 23.
Charlotte at Portland, 10:05 p.m. ET: Keep an eye on Damian Lillard's availabilty here. He was holding his elbow during a blowout win over Chicago last time out and has been diagnosed with an elbow strain that the team may choose to be cautious with since they visit Denver for a more important game on Sunday. Portland has won 10 of 14, including three straight contests and would likely rely on C.J. McCollum to serve as primary playmaker if Lillard sits. Shooters Nik Stauskas and Seth Curry would be in for a bump in playing time as well. The Hornets are on their fourth stop of a six-game roadie and haven't been good outside of Charlotte, winning just five of 18 games. The Hornets are trying to get away with playing small due to the absence of starting center Cody Zeller, which may hurt them against a surging Jusuf Nurkic. Portland has won 14 of 18 matchups between these teams since '09, including 10 in a row at home.Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
