  • Jokic's 4th triple-double leads Nuggets past Heat 103-99
    January 8, 2019
    By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Nikola Jokic had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season, and his basket with 2.4 seconds left put the Western Conference-leading Denver Nuggets ahead to stay in their 103-99 win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

Jamal Murray had 18 points, Trey Lyles added 15, Paul Millsap had 12 and Torrey Craig finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets.

It was the 20th career triple-double for Jokic. He also became the second center to post one against the Heat, joining Vlade Divac - who did it for the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 8, 1995, exactly 24 years prior to Jokic.

Dion Waiters returned to the lineup and scored 15 points for Miami, which got 13 apiece from Bam Adebayo and Kelly Olynyk, and 12 each from Hassan Whiteside, Josh Richardson and Justise Winslow.

    TIMBERWOLVES 119, THUNDER 117

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Andrew Wiggins had a season-high 40 points and 10 rebounds, and the Timberwolves beat Oklahoma City in Ryan Saunders' first game as Minnesota's interim coach.

Saunders, just 32 years old, is the son of former Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders. The team fired Tom Thibodeau on Sunday.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 20 points and Dario Saric added 15 for the Timberwolves.

Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook missed two 3-pointers in the closing seconds that would have given the Thunder the lead. He finished with 25 points and 16 assists.

Paul George scored 27 points and Steven Adams added 20 points and 12 rebounds for Oklahoma City.

Thunder reserve center Nerlens Noel was taken off the court on a stretcher in the third quarter after being hit by Wiggins' elbow on a dunk attempt. There was no immediate word on Noel's condition.

    WARRIORS 125, KNICKS 95

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Klay Thompson scored 43 points with seven 3-pointers, Stephen Curry had his first double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-best 14 assists, and the Warriors snapped a rare three-game home losing streak by beating the cold-shooting Knicks.

Kevin Durant added 24 points, six rebounds and six assists while Draymond Green had 11 rebounds and 10 of his team's 36 assists as the Warriors pulled away late in the first half to get back on a winning track at Oracle Arena.

Thompson hit 5 of his first 7 shots and had 12 points by the end of the first, finishing 18 of 29 from the floor - 7 for 16 from long range - and notching his second game with at least 40 points after going off for 52 at Chicago on Oct. 29.

Mario Hezonja scored 19 points for the Knicks, who shot 39.8 percent (35 of 88).

    RAPTORS 104, HAWKS 101

TORONTO (AP) - Serge Ibaka scored the winning basket with 17 seconds remaining and Toronto won its sixth straight home game.

Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, Pascal Siakam had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Kyle Lowry scored 16 points as the Raptors earned their sixth consecutive win over the Hawks.

OG Anunoby scored 14 points and Ibaka had 13.

John Collins had 21 points and 14 rebounds, Jeremy Lin scored 20 points and Trae Young added 19 for the Hawks, who have lost four of five.

    PACERS 123, CAVALIERS 115

CLEVELAND (AP) - Thaddeus Young scored 26 points, Bojan Bogdanovic had 23 and Indiana held off Cleveland's comeback bid and handed the Cavaliers their 10th straight loss.

Cleveland has the worst record in the league at 8-33. The Cavaliers suffered another injury when forward Larry Nance hurt his right knee in the first quarter and didn't return.

Victor Oladipo had 17 points and Domantas Sabonis had 15 for the Pacers, who have won seven of eight.

Jordan Clarkson scored 26 points for Cleveland. Alec Burks scored 19 points, Tristan Thompson had 15 points and 13 rebounds and rookie point guard Collin Sexton scored 14.

    CLIPPERS 128, HORNETS 109

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lou Williams had 27 points and 10 assists, and the Clippers beat the Hornets for the ninth straight time at Staples Center.

Montrezl Harrell added 23 points and 11 rebounds, Tobias Harris had 23 and Danilo Gallinari 20 in the Clippers' third win a row overall.

The Hornets got within two early in the third before the Clippers took control for good. They closed the third on a 17-9 run, led by Harrell's eight straight points, to take an 86-77 lead into the fourth.

Los Angeles stretched its lead to 20 points in the fourth on Williams' basket after Gallinari's 3-pointer. Avery Bradley and Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers that extended the lead to 121-98.

Malik Monk scored 19 of his 24 points in the fourth for the Hornets

    76ERS 132, WIZARDS 115

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rookie Landry Shamet made eight 3-pointers and scored 29 points, both career-highs, and Joel Embiid had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Philadelphia to a rout of Washington.

Jimmy Butler added 20 points and Ben Simmons had 19 points, nine assists and five rebounds for the 76ers, who won their fourth straight and seventh of nine.

Bradley Beal scored 28 points for the Wizards.

Philadelphia improved to an NBA-best 18-3 at home.

    SUNS 115, KINGS 111

PHOENIX (AP) - Kelly Oubre Jr. matched his career high with 26 points, including a one-handed rebound jam with 11.1 seconds to play, and Phoenix snapped a six-game losing streak by rallying from a 21-point deficit to beat turnover-prone Sacramento.

Oubre, obtained in the trade that sent Trevor Ariza to Washington on Dec. 17, matched the 26 points he scored for the Wizards against Detroit on Jan. 19 of last year.

T.J. Warren added 21 points and Deandre Ayton had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Suns, who were without leading scorer Devin Booker due to back spasms.

De'Aaron Fox scored 24 and Ben McLemore 20 for the Kings, who committed a season-high 26 turnovers, 18 in the second half. Sacramento lost for the fifth time in six games.

      • Wednesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the 2019 college football national title:
        9-5: Clemson
        5-2: Alabama
        12-1: Georgia, Ohio State
        14-1: Michigan
        15-1: Oklahoma
        20-1: Texas

        Quote of the Day
“In all honesty, Jon’s got final say, if it ever comes to that, and I’ve got zero problems with that. Now, having said that, I think we’re going to come to a consensus, and I like a little yelling, a little screaming, a little fighting for what players you believe in. But at the end of the day, I guarantee you, Jon Gruden and I are going to know what a Raider looks like and smells like. I don’t think we’re going to have any issues.”
        Raiders’ new GM Mike Mayock

        Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner plays GM of the Cleveland Browns, who plays the Browns’ head coach?

        Tuesday’s quiz
Rams haven’t won a playoff game since January 8, 2005 when they beat Seattle 27-20; Marc Bulger was the Rams’ quarterback that day.

        Monday’s quiz
Troy Aikman played at Oklahoma before he transferred to UCLA.

        *********************************

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

        13) Green Bay Packers hired Titans’ OC Matt LaFleur as their new head coach. In 2017, LaFleur served as OC under Sean McVay in Los Angeles in a season where the Rams finished the year ranked as the NFL’s 10th best offense.

LaFleur also spent three seasons on the same coaching staff with McVay in Washington (2011-13) with LaFleur serving as QB coach and McVay serving as tight ends coach.

        12) Atlanta Falcons fortified their coaching staff by adding two former head coaches as assistants; Dirk Koetter as OC, Mike Mularkey as tight ends’ coach. Koetter is an upgrade at OC over Steve Sarkisian.

        11) Since 1994, Kansas City Chiefs are 0-6 in home playoff games; last time they won a home playoff game, 27-24 over the Steelers in ‘94, their QB was Joe Montana.

This year’s Chiefs are first-ever NFL team to score 26+ points in every game of a season.

        10) From Josh Dubow of AP: Last time Nick Saban lost a game by more than 14 points was December 17, 2006, when Buffalo beat Saban’s Miami Dolphins 21-0 behind three TD passes from JP Losman.

Lot of water under the bridge since then.

        9) Arizona Cardinals parted ways wth coach Bruce Arians after LY, then drafted a young QB and hired a new coach who is defense-oriented, who they then fired after one year.

Meanwhile, Arians is about to resurface as the coach in Tampa Bay, while young QB Rosen didn’t have a great year. I’m not sure what the Cardinals were thinking when they cut Arians loose, but hiring Kliff Kingsbury at least makes some sense for them- it should be good for Rosen’s career.

        8) On the flip side of that argument is this: Texas Tech fired Kingsbury Nov 26; 43 days later, he’s an NFL head coach? Thats a career move that hasn’t happened very often, if ever.

        7) In each of last ten years, Miami Dolphins’ record has ranged from 6-10 to 10-6; they’re only team in NFL that can say that. Dolphins have made the playoffs twice in last 17 years. Last time Miami won or lost more than 10 games in a season was their 11-5 season in 2008.

        6) Underrated coach: Kenny Atkinson of the Brooklyn Nets, who has led his team to a 20-22 record this season. Nets last finished over .500 five years ago; they won less than 30 games the last three years, so Atkinson is doing good work with a roster full of guys lot of other teams didn’t want. Nets right now hold the 8th and final playoff spot in the East.

        5) With Titans’ OC Matt LaFleur being hired as head coach in Green Bay, that means Marcus Mariota will have his 4th OC in five years with Tennessee next season. Not good.

Meanwhile, Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins tweeted that he “didn’t want to go back to the crib.” Haskins is from New Jersey; he posted a pic of him in a Giants’ uniform, but then the tweet was quickly deleted. His agent probably had a heart attack when he saw the tweet.

        4) If you’re betting on the Sony Open golf tournament this weekend, keep in mind that the last five Sony Open champs also played in Kapalua the week before.

        3) Mike McKenna became the 7th different goalie to start for the Philadelphia Flyers this year, tying the 1989-90 Quebec Nordiques for the most goalies ever used in one season.

        2) In the last 27 years, Washington Redskins are only NFL team that hasn’t had at least one season when they went 11-5 or better; even the Browns and Lions had one. New England has had 16 of them.

        1) Dueling trends: Patriots covered 12 of their last 15 home games; Chargers are 9-0 SU outside of Los Angeles this season.

                • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                  Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Pistons at Lakers – 10:35 PM EST

Although both these teams have struggled of late, each squad is seeking its second win in January. The Pistons (17-21 SU, 17-20-1 ATS) embark on a four-game Western Conference road swing following back-to-back home losses to Utah and San Antonio. Detroit jumped out to huge leads early in each of those games, but melted down each time as an underdog to fall to 2-7 the last nine games. The Pistons are riding a 5-1 OVER stretch the past six contests, while allowing at least 109 points in each of their last five defeats.

The Lakers (22-19 SU, 17-23-1 ATS) have played the last seven games without LeBron James, winning only twice. James remains sidelined with a groin injury and isn’t rushing to return to the court, as the Lakers snapped a three-game skid in Sunday’s 107-97 triumph at Dallas as 7 ½-point underdogs. Los Angeles ended a 14-game stretch in which it allowed at least 100 points as the Lakers yielded 30 second half points after trailing at halftime, 67-54. Brandon Ingram led the Lakers with 29 points, while L.A. overcame a 4-of-20 shooting performance from Kyle Kuzma.

Detroit has captured four of the past five meetings with Los Angeles, but the Lakers knocked off the Pistons at Staples Center last season, 113-93 as three-point underdogs. Since starting the season with a 12-4 home mark, the Lakers have dropped four of the past five at Staples Center, including losses as a favorite against the Grizzlies and Knicks.

                  But, First

A battle of first place teams hook up at the Toyota Center as the Rockets look to stay hot at home against the Bucks. Houston (23-16 SU, 20-18-1 ATS) is riding a 10-game home winning streak and hasn’t lost at the Toyota Center since late November. The Rockets have won 12 of the past 14 games overall, including Monday’s 125-113 triumph over the Nuggets as one-point favorites. James Harden led the Rockets with 32 points and 14 assists as Houston enters tonight’s contest listed as a home underdog for the third time since Christmas.

Milwaukee (28-11 SU, 22-15-2 ATS) remains undefeated off a loss this season after rallying past Utah on Monday, 114-102 to cash as 5 ½-point favorites. The Bucks outscored the Jazz, 31-16 in the fourth quarter, while Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds before fouling out. Milwaukee owns a 5-2 road record in the last seven games since losing in overtime at New York on December 1. The Rockets swept the Bucks last season, while Houston has captured eight of the past 10 meetings since 2014.

                  Seeing Green

The Celtics (24-15 SU, 21-18 ATS) have picked things up at home since dropping back-to-back games at TD Garden to the Suns and Bucks in late December. Boston is in the midst of a five-game home winning streak, while trying to pull off a perfect 4-0 homestand. The latest victory for Brad Stevens’ squad came in Monday’s 116-95 blowout of the unrested Nets as 10 ½-point favorites, as Boston has now covered the spread in 13 of 14 home wins this season.

Boston welcomes in Indiana to Beantown as the Pacers (27-13 SU, 21-19 ATS) continue their five-game road trip. Indiana has won seven of its past eight games overall, including last night’s 123-115 win at Cleveland. Unfortunately, the Pacers couldn’t hold onto a 22-point lead after the first quarter as the Cavaliers picked up the cover as 9 ½-point underdogs. Indiana has failed to cash in four consecutive games, while hitting the OVER in six straight contests. The Pacers seek their second win over the Celtics this season after edging Boston, 102-101 as 3 ½-point home underdogs in early November.

                  Tighten the Bootstraps

Following a shaky start, the Spurs (24-17 SU, 25-15-1 ATS) have caught fire and ascending towards the top of the Southwest division. San Antonio has covered seven consecutive games overall, while picking up wins in each of the past five trips to the court. The Spurs erased an early double-digit deficit in Monday’s 119-107 victory at Detroit as 2 ½-point favorites, led by a combined 51-point effort from DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge on 21-of-33 shooting from the floor.

The Spurs remain on the highway with a visit to Memphis as the two division rivals have split a pair of matchups in San Antonio. The Grizzlies (18-22 SU, 17-23 ATS) are going the wrong way at the moment by dropping six straight games, while riding a dreadful 1-9 ATS record in the past 10 contests. Memphis began the season with a 7-1 record at FedEx Forum, but the Grizzlies have slipped to 3-8 in the past 11 home contests.

                  Good to See You Again

The 76ers (27-14 SU, 20-21 ATS) overcame a slow start on Tuesday to rout the Wizards (16-25 SU, 16-25 ATS) as eight-point favorites, 132-115. Former Wichita State standout Landry Shamet knocked down eight three-pointers and scored 29 points off the bench for Philadelphia, who improved to 18-3 at home and 6-3 in the last nine matchups with Washington. However, the three losses have come at Capital One Arena since 2017 as the Sixers make the short trip to D.C. tonight for the back end of a home-and-home set.

Washington had covered four straight games prior to last night’s beatdown as the Wizards begin a tough six-game homestand that includes visits from Milwaukee, Toronto, and Golden State in the next two weeks. The Wizards have caught fire at home of late by winning eight of the past 10 games in the Nation’s Capital, including victories over the Clippers, Rockets, and Lakers. Washington has cashed in three of the past four opportunities as a home underdog with the only loss coming in overtime to Boston last month.

One of the league's best offenses

The Bucks and Rockets are both holding opponents under 110 points a game, but there has been a noticeable difference in terms of opponent shooting percentage. The Bucks rank first in this category holding opponents to 43.2 percent, while the Rockets have allowed opponents to shoot 47.2 percent from the floor.

On the offensive end, the Bucks average the highest points per game in the league with 117.6 and rank fifth in shooting percentage at 47.8. Look for Milwaukee to find success on the road and back their team total Over 113.

Emphasis on the defensive end of the floor

The Pacers have won 14 of their last 17 games and enter today’s game against the Celtics playing the tail end of a back-to-back. Boston has been on an impressive run of its own, winning five straight home contests and four of its last five games overall.

Defensively, both teams rank in the top three in opponent points per game with Indiana allowing 102.3 and Boston 105.3. Opponents are shooting 44.2 percent from the floor against both. With the Under hitting in 10 of the last 14 games between these two, and five of the last six at TD Garden, look for defense to reign supreme and back Under the game total of 213.5.

Two teams moving in opposite directions

The Spurs take on the Grizzlies at a great time when Memphis is on a six-game losing streak and have lost eight of their last 10. This game will be a rematch of Saturday's contest where the Spurs won 108-88. The Spurs' 37-point second quarter proved to be the difference.

With San Antonio winning seven of the last eight meetings between the two sides - and posting a 12-5 record playing on the road at Memphis - look for the Spurs to cover as 2.5-point road favorites.

                      Tough on power forwards

The Magic are in a difficult spot today as they travel to take on the Jazz as 9-point underdogs. Orlando has lost three straight games and six of its last seven contests on the road.
Utah have been particularly good defending opposing power forwards holding them to 20.5 points per game. In their first meeting, the Jazz held Orlando's Aaron Gordon to three of seven shooting for only eight points in 28 minutes. Look for similar results today and back Under Gordon's point total of 15.5.

King of the boards is in prime position

The Lakers have been one of the worst teams defending opposing centers allowing 25.8 and 17.8 rebounds per game. Today the Lakers host the Detroit Pistons.

This is an ideal spot for Pistons big man Andre Drummond who is averaging 14.2 field goal attempts and scoring 17.1 points per game. Drummond leads the league in total rebounds per game at 14.9 and has logged 10 or more in nine of the last 10 games. Take Drummond to capitalize off the good matchup and back Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 31.5.

                          • Russell, Nets climb out of early hole to beat Hawks
                            January 9, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and a season-high 21 rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks withstand a 42-point performance from James Harden and beat the Houston Rockets 116-109 on Wednesday night.

In a matchup of the two front-runners for MVP, Harden and his teammates were done in by a shooting slump late in the third quarter that spilled into the fourth and left them down by 15 points.

Milwaukee held a 13-point lead with about five minutes left before Houston used a 8-0 run, started by two 3-pointers from Harden, to cut it to 107-102. The Bucks got a layup from Eric Bledsoe before Harden scored the next four points to get Houston to 109-106 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Antetokounmpo made one of two free throws to push Milwaukee's lead to four points with about 90 seconds left. Harden missed his third straight 3-pointer before Antetokounmpo added a layup on the other end to make it 112-106 with 40 seconds remaining.

Harden missed another 3 seconds later and the Bucks added four free throws down the stretch to secure the their seventh victory in eight games.

It was Harden's sixth 40-point outing in the last eight games and he has scored 30 or more points in 14 straight games, which is the longest streak since Tracy McGrady did it in 2003. Harden shot 6 of 16 on 3-pointers to give him at least five in the last 11 games.

DeMarre Carroll added 17 points to help the Nets improve to 21-22 with their eighth victory in their last nine home games. They managed only 20 wins for the entire season just two years ago, but have engineered a big turnaround after a slow start to this season. On Wednesday, they did the same thing in the game.

                                Quote of the Day
“I saw some of the best leaders I’ve ever been around check out, because it was ridiculous. Our assistant head coach [Joe Vitt] was suspended for six weeks. We had a new D-coordinator in [Steve] Spagnuolo. His scheme didn’t fit our personnel at all, so we were the worst defense in NFL history. We tried to hold it together . . . but there was a point in the season where it’s just, like, everybody for themselves.”
Eagles’ safety Malcolm Jenkins, on the 2012 Saints

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                                13) USC’s AD Lynn Swann is taking grief in Los Angeles over the Kliff Kingsbury fiasco, where the Trojans hired Kingsbury as their new OC, then 34 days later, watched Kingsbury run off to be head coach of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Had Swann waited until the eight NFL head coach openings were filled, he would’ve been spared the embarrassment of hiring a guy who didn’t want to be there. Now he has to hire another OC, and it is less than a month until Signing Day for recruits. Not good.

                                12) Kliff Kingsbury said couple of months ago that he would take Kyler Murray with the first pick in the draft, if he could. Well……..now he can, since Arizona has the first pick in the draft.

Would another team trade for Josh Rosen and open the door for that to happen?

                                11) Denver Broncos hired Bears’ DC Vic Fangio as their new head coach, beating out Steelers’ OL coach Mike Munchak- those two coaches were born about five miles apart near Scranton, PA.

                                10) Jets signed Adam Gase as coach; Gase went 23-26 as the Dolphins’ coach, losing his only playoff game 30-12 at Pittsburgh in 2016. Gase went 5-1 against the Jets with Miami.

Everyone except Denver is anxious to sign offense-geared head coaches.

                                9) Tennessee Vols hired OC Jim Chaney away from Georgia; he will be Tennessee’s 4th OC the last four years- he was make $950,000 a year in Athens, so safe to say he got a hefty raise to move to Knoxville.

                                8) Cleveland Browns hired OC Freddie Kitchens as its new HC, based on his development of rookie QB Baker Mayfield. Most assistant coaches were fired, including DC Gregg Williams, who was interim coach when the Browns won five of their last seven games.

This is similar reasoning that Tampa Bay used a few years ago when Buccaneers fired HC Lovie Smith and promoted Dirk Koetter to HC, figuring that Koetter was instrumental in the development of QB Jameis Winston— how did that turn out for them?

Kitchens is the 6th former Alabama football player to become an NFL head coach, last one being Mike Riley with the Chargers.

                                7) Usually, sign-up for the Westgate SuperBook’s NFL handicapping contest starts in July; this year, they’re hoping to start signing people up on March 1. Over 3,000 people were in this year’s contest; the champ won over $1.4M.

                                6) New Mexico Lobos basketball player Corey Manigault is the nephew of playground legend Earl (the Goat) Manigault, a famous New York City ballplayer from a long time ago whose career was derailed by off-court issues.

                                5) Trivia you get from the movies: When Jesse Owens won the gold medal in the 200-meter sprint in the 1936 Olympics. he won by :00.4 seconds over a guy named Mack Robinson.

You may have heard of Mack’s younger brother, Jackie Robinson. Pretty good baseball player.

                                4) Saben Lee, who plays basketball for Vanderbilt, is the son of former Florida State/NFL running back Amp Lee, who played nine years in the NFL for four teams.

Amp Lee caught the last TD pass Joe Montana threw for the 49ers; later on, he won a Super Bowl ring with the 1999 Rams.

                                3) Milwaukee Brewers signed C Yasmani Grandal to a one-year contract for $18.25M.

                                2) Tuesday, four armed guards entered the New Orleans Saints’ locker room, with Coach Sean Payton wheeling the Lombardi Trophy in, on top of $225k in cash.

Payton asked the team: “Y’all want this??? Win 3 F’n games.”

The locker room erupted. $225k is each player’s Super Bowl bonus.

                                1) Last time Cowboys/Rams met in the playoffs was in January of ’86, when the Dieter Brock-led Rams shut Dallas out 20-0 in Anaheim. That was 20 days before current Rams’ coach Sean McVay was born.

Dallas’ OC Scott Linehan used to be the Rams’ head coach.
Rams’ DC Wade Phillips used to be the Cowboys’ head coach.
