      Taking advantage of home court

The Rockets have owned the head-to-head versus the Nuggets winning eight of the last 10 games, including five straight. They have won by an average margin of 116-107, and have really gotten separation during the first half putting up an average of 61.2 points per game.

Look for the Rockets to start out strong versus a Nuggets team who have won five straight but have been vulnerable on the road this season. Take Houston on the money line.

      Making it five straight

The Spurs have been one of the league's hottest teams winning four straight, and eight of the last 10. They have averaged 117.7 points per game over their most recent three games while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor.

In the head-to-head with the Pistons, the Spurs have won seven of the last 10 meetings and six of the last seven when on the road at Little Caesars Arena. Look for the Spurs to continue their hot shooting today and back them as 3-point road favorites.

      Getting out to early leads

The Bucks have been one of the Association’s top teams in first half scoring averaging 61.6 first-half points per game, with that number even higher over their most recent three games with 67. Today the Bucks take on a Jazz team that ranks towards the bottom in first half scoring averaging only 49.2 points on the road this season.

With the Bucks shooting 54.6 percent over their most recent three games and posting an 18-4 record on their home court, take Milwaukee to cover the 3-point spread in the first half.

      Taking advantage inside

The Lakers have surrendered an average of 26 points on 52 percent shooting and 17.5 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Tonight the Lakers will be playing against the Mavericks and will l have a difficult time slowing down Mavs center DeAndre Jordan as they surrender an average of 51.5 points a game in the paint.

Although Jordan is only averaging 10.9 points a game, he is contributing with an average of 14 rebounds a contest and has logged 17 games this season with at least 15 rebounds. Back Jordan Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 26.5.

Lots of rebounds up for grabs

The Magic have not been shooting the ball well recently averaging only 103.4 points a game on 44.6 percent shooting. They've also performed poorly on the boards averaging only 51 rebounds a game while surrendering 53.7 rebounds per game to opponents. Today the Magic head to Sacramento to take on the Kings.

Kings big man Willie Cauley-Stein has been the best rebounder for Sacramento averaging 8.7 a game, including an average of 2.3 on the offensive end. Look for him to take advantage of a favorable matchup versus a team giving up an average of 15.5 rebounds to opposing centers and take Over his rebounding total of 8.5.

        • Harden, Capela lead Rockets to 125-113 win over Nuggets
          January 7, 2019
          By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 32 points, Clint Capela added a career-high 31 and the Houston Rockets beat the Denver Nuggets 125-113 on Monday night.

P.J. Tucker set a career best with seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 21 points to help Houston win for the 12th time in 14 games. Capela had 19 points by halftime as Harden fed him again and again when Denver double-teamed him behind the 3-point line.

Gerald Green had 21 points and six 3s on a night when Houston made 22 for its sixth game this season with at least 20.

Nikola Jokic scored 24 points for the Nuggets, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Harden had 14 assists, six 3-pointers and scored at least 30 points for the 13th straight game.

          BUCKS 114, JAZZ 102

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 points and Malcolm Brogdon scored 21 to lead Milwaukee past Utah.

Thon Maker added a season-high 15 points off the bench for the Bucks, who were coming off a loss to Toronto on Saturday night. Milwaukee improved to 28-11, the second-best record in the NBA.

Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points and Rudy Gobert had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost starting point guard Ricky Rubio to a right hamstring injury less than five minutes into the game. He didn't return.

Antetokounmpo grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out with 42.9 seconds remaining.

          CELTICS 116, NETS 95

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving returned after missing two games with an eye injury and scored 17 points to lead eight players in double figures as Boston beat Brooklyn.

Jayson Tatum added 16 points for the Celtics, who won their third straight game.

Rodions Kurucs led the Nets with 24 points. Brooklyn lost for just the fourth time in 16 games.

Irving was out after scratching both corneas in a collision Dec. 31 at San Antonio.

          SPURS 119, PISTONS 107

DETROIT (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points, and coach Gregg Popovich moved another step higher on the NBA's career wins list as San Antonio defeated Detroit.

Popovich has 1,221 victories. He's tied with Jerry Sloan for third place, trailing only Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens.

A 23-2 run spanning parts of the first and second quarters put the Spurs up 45-33.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points for San Antonio. Blake Griffin had 34 for the Pistons, and Andre Drummond added 19 points and 14 rebounds.

San Antonio was without forward Rudy Gay, sidelined with a sprained left wrist, but the Spurs still won a season-high fifth straight game. Detroit has lost seven of nine.

          PELICANS 114, GRIZZLIES 95

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 36 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, and New Orleans pulled away from reeling Memphis down the stretch.

Second-year pro Frank Jackson scored a career-high 17 points for the Pelicans, who had won two straight for the first time since winning three in a row in mid-November.

Mike Conley had 22 points and 10 assists for the Grizzlies, not nearly enough to stem what is now a six-game slide.

          LAKERS 107, MAVERICKS 97

DALLAS (AP) - Brandon Ingram scored 29 points and Lonzo Ball added 21 as Los Angeles handed Dallas a rare home loss.

The two young Lakers responded to coach Luke Walton's demand for more passion after a blowout loss to Minnesota on Sunday. The duo helped rally Los Angeles from a double-digit halftime deficit.

The Lakers won for just the second time in seven games since LeBron James strained his groin on Christmas Day, and they swept the season series from the Mavericks 3-0.

Los Angeles surged ahead by outscoring the Mavericks 32-13 in the third quarter.

Luka Doncic scored 27 points to lead Dallas, which fell to 16-4 at home.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

              13) Philadelphia Eagles were -2 in turnovers at Chicago Sunday; over the last 40 years, NFL road playoff teams who were -2 or worse in turnovers went 4-112 in those games.

Make that 5-112. Turnovers are important.

              12) Turns out the Chargers used seven defensive backs on every snap but one against the Ravens Sunday, which neutralized Lamar Jackson’s speed when he scrambled.

              11) Underdogs covered the last ten NFL playoff games.

              10) How is it that Kliff Kingsbury gets the boot at freakin’ Texas Tech, but is a hot commodity with NFL teams? Mike Leach won at Texas Tech, but doesn’t get any NFL looks. Having coached Pat Mahomes elevates his resume; would Lincoln Riley be a hot commodity now if he showed interest in an NFL head coaching job?

              9) Ohio State hired Michigan DL coach Greg Mattison as its new co-defensive coordinator; he will team with former San Francisco 49ers DB’s coach Jeff Hafley, as new HC Ryan Day tells former Rutgers/Bucs’ HC Greg Schiano to take a hike.

              8) Speaking of the Buckeyes, QB Dwayne Haskins declared for the NFL Draft, which figures since QB Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to Ohio State last week. If Haskins was staying in Columbus, Fields would’ve transferred somewhere else.

              7) Is Haskins a first round draft pick? The last QB from a Big 14 school to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft was Kerry Collins, way back in 1995. Tom Brady/Drew Brees weren’t first round draft picks.

              6) Things can change quickly. Three years ago, golfer Xander Schauffele started his season by missing nine of 12 cuts on the Web.com Tour; he wound up earning his PGA Tour card by only $11,687. Now he leads the race for the FedEx Cup (worth $10M).

              5) #1 seeds in this round of NFL playoffs are 5-1 vs spread the last three years, but there is a quirk in there; Eagles were actually a home underdog to Atlanta in this round LY, because of Carson Wentz being hurt and his backup (the now-famous Nick Foles) starting in his place.

              4) Major league baseball had a 4% drop in attendance last year, blamed in large part on bad weather in the spring and a change in how the Marlins and the Blue Jays accounted for sales (Marlins were lying about attendance before their sale).

Overall, the major leagues topped the $10B mark last year in total revenue.

              3) Movie recommendation; Molly’s Game is playing on Showtime this month, a terrific movie (and a true story) about a woman who ran an underground poker game for celebrities and rich people in Los Angeles, and later New York. Tremendous movie.

              2) Favorites covered eight of first nine ACC conference basketball games this season.

              1)Clemson 44, Alabama 16:
              — Sixth straight year underdog covered the national title game.
              — Alabama didn’t score in last 44:18 of this game.
              — Clemson ran a pick-6 in for a TD 1:40 into this game
              — Tigers converted 10-15 on third down, Alabama only 4-13.
              — Clemson WR Justyn Boyd looked like freakin’ Fred Biletnikoff, catching six balls for 153 yards and two TD’s; kid has tremendous hands.
              — Clemson won two of the last three national titles; Alabama is still damn good.

The Stags hit a season-high 16 3-point field goals in a loss to Iona on Saturday, but were just 6 of 22 (27.3 percent) against Niagara. Felix Lemetti had a career-high six makes from distance on Saturday and missed all five attempts Monday.

The Clippers (23-16 SU, 23-16 ATS) started the season on fire, but have cooled off significantly since the start of December by going 8-10 the last 18 games. Los Angeles has built a trio of two-game winning streaks, but hasn’t made it to three since the end of November. The Clippers are coming off back-to-back victories over the Suns and Magic, as L.A. snapped a 14-game stretch of allowing more than 100 points in Sunday’s 106-96 triumph over Orlando as 6 ½-point favorites.

The Hornets (19-20 SU, 20-19 ATS) ended a four-game road slide in Sunday’s 119-113 victory at Phoenix. Kemba Walker paced Charlotte with 29 points, as Charlotte improved to 4-9 ATS the last 13 games. The Hornets have won back-to-back road games only once this season, coming back in mid-October at Miami and Orlando. Charlotte is in the midst of an eight-game OVER streak on the highway, while allowing at least 113 points in seven of those contests.

Los Angeles has captured seven of the past eight matchups with Charlotte since the start of the 2014-15 season, including a 4-0 mark at Staples Center. Each of last season’s two games finished UNDER the total, as the Hornets seek their first road win over the Clippers since February 2009.

                          On the Road Again

The Nuggets (26-12 SU, 21-17 ATS) had their five-game winning streak snapped in Monday’s 125-113 setback at Houston. Denver cashed the OVER for the fifth straight contest in spite of the loss, as the Nuggets allowed their most points since giving up 132 against the Clippers on December 22. Nikola Jokic paced the Nuggets with 24 points and 13 rebounds, but the Nuggets lost for the second time against the Rockets this season.

Denver travels to Miami tonight as the Nuggets own a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS mark with no rest this season. The Heat (19-19 SU, 21-17 ATS) look to rebound after getting rolled by the Hawks, 106-82 on Sunday as 6 ½-point road favorites. Atlanta outscored Miami in the third quarter, 41-21 to bust things open after leading the Heat by one at halftime. The Heat converted only 5-of-34 attempts from three-point range, as Miami’s six-game OVER streak was snapped. The home team split the two meetings last season, as Miami outlasted Denver, 149-141 in double-overtime at American Airlines Arena.

                          Not So Teen Wolf

Following a tumultuous 2 ½ season run as the head coach of the Timberwolves (19-21 SU, 21-19 ATS), head coach Tom Thibodeau was fired after Minnesota blew out the Lakers, 108-86 on Sunday. The man replacing Thibs is assistant coach Ryan Saunders, who not only is 32 years old, but also the son of the late Flip Saunders, who is the winning coach in Minnesota franchise history.

The Wolves bounced back from a pair of road losses at New Orleans and Boston to take care of the Magic and Lakers by double-figures each at Target Center. Minnesota travels to Oklahoma City tonight looking to beat the Thunder for the second time this season. The Wolves held off the Thunder on December 23 as 6 ½-point road underdogs, 114-112, highlighted by 30 points from Andrew Wiggins, while Minnesota knocked down 14 three-pointers.

The Thunder (25-14 SU, 22-17 ATS) suffered their worst home loss of the season in Sunday’s 116-98 setback to the Wizards as 10-point favorites. OKC fell into a letdown spot after beating the Lakers and Blazers on the road, as the Thunder shot 43% from the floor, while cashing the UNDER for the fifth time in the last six games. OKC dropped to 2-4 ATS the last six home games as a single-digit favorite, while the Thunder have lost four of the past five matchups with the Wolves since the beginning of last season.

                          Waving the Wand

Although they still have a long way to reach the .500 mark, the Wizards (16-24 SU, 16-24 ATS) have suddenly covered four straight games. Washington has won three of its past four games, including Sunday’s wire-to-wire rout of Oklahoma City as 10 ½-point underdogs, 116-98. Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 24 points, as Washington avenged a 23-point home defeat to OKC from November. The Wizards continue a tough stretch as they begin a home-and-home set with the 76ers, followed by visits from Milwaukee and Toronto this weekend.

Washington heads to Philadelphia tonight as the 76ers (26-14 SU, 19-21 ATS) look to improve on a 17-3 mark at Wells Fargo Center this season. Philadelphia failed to cash in Saturday’s 106-100 win over Dallas as 6 ½-point favorites thanks to the Mavericks outscoring the Sixers by 11 points in the fourth quarter. Jimmy Butler missed that victory due to an illness, as the Sixers’ swingman is expected to return tonight with Philadelphia trying to pick up its seventh cover in the last eight chances off an ATS loss.

                          Tired Legs

The Knicks (10-30 SU, 18-21-1 ATS) managed a cover as 11-point underdogs in Monday’s 111-101 setback at Portland. New York is riding a three-game ATS hot streak as the Knicks close out their six-game road swing at Golden State tonight, trying to avenge a 128-100 defeat at the Garden to the defending champions on October 26. New York led Golden State, 84-81 after three quarters as a 12-point underdog, but the Warriors crushed the Knicks in the fourth quarter, 47-16 to grab the cover.

The Warriors (26-14 SU, 16-24 ATS) are in the midst of a rare three-game home skid, as Golden State squandered a 17-point halftime lead to Houston in last Thursday’s 135-134 overtime setback. Golden State bounced back two nights later with a 127-123 victory at Sacramento, but the Warriors failed to cash as 7 ½-point favorites. The Warriors look to bust out of a 1-9 ATS slump at Oracle Arena since November 24, while Golden State is laying its most points of the season tonight as 18-point favorites over New York.

                                Fantastic Mr. Fox

Kings sophomore sensation De'Aaron Fox was incredibly efficient last night versus the Magic scoring 20 points on 9-14 shooting through only 22 minutes. He has been having a fantastic season with his scoring up six points a game from his rookie year, and his shooting percentage jumping from 41.2 to 47.2 percent.

Look for him to take advantage of a good matchup tonight as the Kings play in Phoenix. The Suns have struggled to defend opposing point guards allowing 24.5 points, 2.7 made 3-point shots, 6.3 rebounds and 8.5 assists a contest to the position. Look for Fox to build off last night's success and back his point total Over 17.5.

                                Locking down point guards

The Cavaliers will going up against the Indiana Pacers and their league-best defense. The Pacers hold opponents to just 101.9 points per game on 43.9 percent shooting and have been especially good at defending point guards allowing only 17.9 points a game on 39.9 percent shooting. This matchup could be problematic for Cavaliers rookie Collin Sexton who enters today averaging 14.7 points a game on 41.8 percent shooting and has not been forcing shots. Take Under his point total today of 14.5.

                                Not known for his scoring

The Thunder have been great defending opposing point guards all season allowing only 18 points per game on 41.4 percent shooting, Today the Thunder host the Timberwolves as 8-point favorites.

Although Timberwolves guard Jeff Teague has been efficient since returning from injury, he is only averaging 12.2 points on 40.5 percent shooting through 31.3 minutes of game time. Look for the Thunder to keep him in check and take the Under on his point total of 14.5.

                                No Joke, fade this star

The Heat have been very good against opposing centers allowing 21.1 points and 2.8 assists per game to the position. They rank fourth in the Association in opponent points in the paint allowing only 42.8 per game.

Today the Heat take on the Nuggets and big man Nikola Jokic who is averaging 18.9 points a game. Denver is playing on the second night of a back-to-back, so take the Under on "The Joker's" point total of 21.5.

                                Owning the head-to-head

The Clippers have posted a 13-6 record at home this season and host the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night. The Clips have owned the head-to-head series versus the Hornets winning eight of the last 10 games overall, and five straight at home.

Through their most recent 10 games, the Clippers have held Charlotte to 98 points on 41.4 percent shooting. Look for the Clippers to take advantage of their home court advantage and cover as 6-point favorites.
