        • NBA roundup: Oladipo lifts Pacers over Spurs
          October 29, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Detroit Pistons were more than happy to take what the Warriors gave them, turning Golden State's season-high 25 turnovers into a 115-107 win over the defending NBA champs on Sunday.

It was the third consecutive win for the Pistons, the second in as many nights on their West Coast road trip.

Avery Bradley led the Pistons with 23 points, one more than Reggie Jackson, who had all but two of his points in the first half.

Klay Thompson had 29, Kevin Durant 28 and Stephen Curry 27 and eight assists for the Warriors.

          Pacers 97, Spurs 94

INDIANAPOLIS -- Victor Oladipo scored 23 points, including the decisive 3-pointer, to lift Indiana past San Antonio.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points lead San Antonio, which lost its second game in a row after a four-game, season-opening winning streak.

Oladipo sank a 3-pointer with 10.3 seconds to go to give Indiana a 95-94 lead. Aldridge missed a jumper with 5.1 seconds left. Cory Joseph was fouled with 3.4 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to push the lead to three. Patty Mills missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

          Knicks 114, Cavaliers 95

CLEVELAND -- Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 34 points to lead New York to a stunning win over Cleveland. New York had lost 10 straight to the Cavaliers, who are in the midst of a three-game losing streak.

Kristaps Porzingis added 32 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks. New York's Enes Kanter contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Courtney Lee added 15 points and 10 boards.

Kevin Love led Cleveland with 22 points and 11 rebounds. LeBron James added 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Derrick Rose returned from a sprained left ankle and contributed 15 points. He missed the previous four games.

          Bucks 117, Hawks 106

ATLANTA -- Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 33 points, his fifth 30-point game of the season, to spark Milwaukee to a win over Atlanta.

Antetokounmpo picked up his fourth double-double of the season. He was 14-for-21 from the field and added 12 rebounds and five assists to give the Bucks their second straight win.

The Bucks also got a season-high 27 points from Khris Middleton, who added seven rebounds and eight assists, while Malcolm Brogdon had 16 points. Hawks guard Dennis Schroder finished with 21 points and eight assists.

          Wizards 110, Kings 83

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- John Wall's 19 points and nine assists in 26 minutes led Washington in a win over fellow former Kentucky guard De'Aaron Fox and Sacramento.

Wall produced 11 points in the first quarter and scored or assisted on every point as Washington bolted to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who was fined $50,000 but avoided a suspension after grabbing Golden State forward Draymond Green around the neck in Washington's loss to the Warriors on Friday, scored 15 points.

Fox shot 1-for-8 and scored two points. Bogdan Bogdanovic led the Kings with 15 points.

          Hornets 120, Magic 113

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kemba Walker scored a season-high 34 points and Dwight Howard scored 22 as Charlotte cooled off Orlando.

The Magic, led by Jonathon Simmons' 27 points off the bench, had a three-game winning streak snapped. They were coming off a 114-87 home win over San Antonio on Friday night when they shot 57.1 percent from the field.

Walker added 10 assists and six rebounds. He was 15 of 25 as the Hornets shot 54.1 percent from the field. Dwight Howard contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeremy Lamb had 20 points.

          Nuggets 124, Nets 111

NEW YORK -- Jamal Murray scored a season-high 26 points as Denver used a dominant start to the third quarter and pulled away for a victory over Brooklyn.

The second-year guard scored 16 of his points in the second half when the Nuggets outscored the Nets 64-48. He made 8 of 13 shots and came within four of his career high set April 7 against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Nikola Jokic contributed 21 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season as the Nuggets produced their best showing by far on offense. Wilson Chandler contributed 14 of his 18 points in the third quarter for Denver. Spencer Dinwiddie paced the Nets with 22 points.

              ********************

              Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

              13) Ohio State 39, Penn State 38— Nittany Lions led 35-20 with 12:00 left, 38-27 with 5:00 left, but Buckeyes drove 76-58 yards on their last two drives to win the game. Barrett was 33-39/328 with four TD passes for Ohio State— he was 13-13 with three TD’s in the 4th quarter.

              12) Georgia 42, Florida 7— Further proof the world is going crazy: Gators went 19-8 the last two years; they’re 3-4 this year and now they want to fire the coach? Why? One bad year and they show you the door?

Our society is getting so incredibly soft now; people can’t deal with their teams losing, which may be part of why the NFL’s popularity slips in areas during a bad year. Fewer people stick with their teams thru thick and thin. We’re becoming a nation of front-runners.

“We’re with you win or tie, and we’re not that crazy about tie.”

              11) Iowa State 14, TCU 7— Cyclones have had one winning season since 2006; the last seven years, Iowa State was 28-58— they’re 6-2 now, after their starting QB left the team for unstated “medical” reasons. Their starting QB the last two years is now their starting middle linebacker. Your 2017 National Coach of the Year? Iowa State’s Matt Campbell.

              10) Boston College 35, Florida State 3— Seminoles are 2-5 and appear to have packed it in for the season. Must be fun to be a Miami Hurricanes fan right now, with Gators/Seminoles having such dreadful seasons.

              9) Wake Forest 42, Louisville 32— Demon Deacons scored 40+ in an ACC game for first time since 2010. QB John Wolford was 28-34/461 passing against a struggling Louisville defense.

              8) Arkansas 38, Ole Miss 37— Razorbacks trailed 31-7 with 3:00 left in first half. Two bad teams playing an exciting game. Arkansas scored a defensive TD with 6:01 left when they were down 35-27, not the best Ole Miss moment of the day.

              7) Harvard 25, Dartmouth 22— When Harvard recovered a fumbled punt, a Dartmouth assistant coach punched the window of the press box so hard that he shattered it— security removed him from the stadium.

Dartmouth led 14-0 when they fumbled the punt, which turned out to be a costly play.

              6) MLB suspended Yuli Gurriel for the first five games of 2018 for his actions during Game 2 of the World Series, instead of for the rest of the World Series. Some people complained that some immediate action should’ve been taken, because in today’s world, somebody is always complaining about something. Oy

Gurriel loses $382,716 with the 5-game suspension, which isn’t nothing; if he gets fined for his 2017 salary instead (doubtful) it would’ve been $444,444.44. His base salary for next year is $2M less than this year.

              5) Upsets of the Week:
              UNLV (+21) 26, Fresno State 16
              Florida International (+16) 41, Marshall 30
              Houston (+10.5) 28, South Florida 24
              Air Force (+10) 45, Colorado State 28
              Texas State (+8) 27, Coastal Carolina 7
              Iowa State (+6.5) 14, TCU 7

              4) Northwestern 39, Michigan State 31 (OT)— Game was 17-all after regulation; Wildcats win in OT for second week in row, are now 5-3, and on their way to being pummeled by a better team in some obscure bowl game that I’ll watch because I’m an idiot.

Northwestern is 3-10 all-time in bowl games, but they have won two of their last three bowls.

              3) Kentucky 29, Tennessee 26— Vols caught a Hail Mary on last play of the game, but the guy got tackled on the 3-yard line— this is Wildcats 2nd win in their last 33 games with Tennessee, the other win coming in 2011. It was also the 2nd time in last 21 meetings that Kentucky was the favorite— Vols covered the 5-point spread.

              2) Nebraska 25, Purdue 24— Cornhuskers drove 70 yards in 8 plays in 1:08, scoring winning TD on a 13-yard pass with 0:14 left. Purdue led 25-12 with 12:00 left in the game.

              1) USC 48, Arizona State 17– Trojans bounce back from last week’s loss at Notre Dame with a big conference win here. USC plays Arizona next week, and can pretty much clinch the Pac-12 South then.

                          October 30, 2017

MIAMI (AP) Jeff Teague scored 23 points, Andrew Wiggins scored 22 and the Minnesota Timberwolves scored the first six points of overtime before holding on to beat the Miami Heat 125-122 on Monday night.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who got 16 from Jimmy Butler and 13 from Jamal Crawford.

Jimmy Butler scored 14, Jamal Crawford scored 13 and Towns grabbed 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Dion Waiters tied a career-high by scoring 33 for Miami, 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter including a layup that sent the game to overtime. His 30-footer that would have tied the game as time expired bounced off the rim.

Kelly Olynyk scored 23 points and Goran Dragic added 18 for Miami - which was again without center Hassan Whiteside, out for a fifth consecutive game with a bruised left knee. Bam Adebayo started again in his place and had the best game of his rookie season, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

                          KNICKS 116, NUGGETS 110

NEW YORK (AP) - Kristaps Porzingis scored a career-high 38 points and Kyle O'Quinn added 15 points and 12 rebounds to help the Knicks beat the Nuggets.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter after the Knicks had blown all of their 23-point third-quarter lead.

Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 28 points and Jamal Murray scored 20.

                          CELTICS 108, SPURS 94

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving scored 24 points, Jaylen Brown added 18 and Al Horford had 13 rebounds to help the Celtics beat the Spurs and lead Boston to its fifth straight victory.

Irving scored 24 for the third straight game, rookie Jayson Tatum had 11 rebounds and Terry Rozier had 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. Boston lost its first two games of the season on back-to-back nights - and star free agent Gordon Hayward, too - but have not lost since.

Reserves Brandon Paul had 18 points and Rudy Gay scored 14 for San Antonio, which remains without Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs lost on back-to-back nights and fell to 1-3 on a four-game road trip, leaving coach Gregg Popovich waiting for career victory No. 1,155, which would tie him with Phil Jackson at sixth on the NBA's all-time list.

                          HORNETS 104, GRIZZLISE 99

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 27 points and keyed a fourth-quarter rally to erase a double-digit deficit as the Hornets handed Memphis its first home loss of the season with a win over the Grizzlies.

Jeremy Lamb added 17 points and rookie Malik Monk finished with 13 points.

Memphis held a 10-point lead with just under 8 minutes left, but Walker re-entered the game and kick-started the Charlotte rally. Walker had nine points in the stretch, part of which included an 18-4 run by the Hornets.

That rally put the Hornets ahead for good, although Memphis pulled within 102-99 in the closing seconds. Memphis couldn't catch Charlotte primarily because they made only 6 of 27 shots in the fourth, many of them coming in the closing minutes as the Grizzlies tried to stop the Hornets rally.

Tyreke Evans led Memphis with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Mike Conley finished with 16.

                          MAGIC 115, PELICANS 99

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Marreese Speights highlighted an 18-point performance by hitting five of his career-high six 3-pointers during a decisive 22-6 run, and the Magic soundly defeated the Pelicans.

Speights' second 3 of the game made it 87-83 in the final minute of the third quarter. He drained four more early in the fourth, after which Orlando led 106-89.

Coming off a lopsided victory over Cleveland on Saturday, the Pelicans were unable to respond during the final seven minutes.

Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier and Jonathon Simmons each scored 20 points for Orlando, which shot 50.6 percent (43 of 85) from the field and 47.1 percent (16 of 34) from 3-point range. Aaron Gordon added 17 points, helping the Magic bounce back from a loss at Charlotte a night earlier.

Anthony Davis had 39 points and 10 rebounds for New Orleans, but the Pelicans made only seven of their 28 3-point attempts, hitting only 3 of 18 from deep in the second half.

DeMarcus Cousins had 12 points and 12 assists for the Pelicans, while Jrue Holiday scored 11 points.

                          76ERS 115, ROCKETS 107

HOUSTON (AP) - Ben Simmons had 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Joel Embiid added 22 points to lead the 76ers to a win over the Rockets.

After losing 105-104 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Eric Gordon in Philadelphia on Oct. 18, the 76ers snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Rockets, winning in Houston for the first time since Feb. 16, 2011.

The Rockets missed nine of their last 10 shots, scoring just four points in the final 3:28 and dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.

James Harden scored 29 points and Gordon had 25.

                          JAZZ 104, MAVERICKS 89

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Rodney Hood scored 15 of his season-high 25 points in the third quarter to help the Jazz rally to beat the Mavericks.

The Mavs hit nine of 14 3-pointers in the first half and the Jazz struggled to defend their drive-and-kick action. But Utah came alive in the second half thanks to Hood and a 25-4 run to start the third quarter.

Ricky Rubio saw his shot begin to fall in the second half and finished with 20 points. Rudy Gobert added 17 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks and six assists.

Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 18 points and J.J. Barea added 17 off the bench.

                          RAPTORS 99, TRAIL BLAZERS 85

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - DeMar DeRozan had 25 points and the shorthanded Raptors beat the Trail Blazers.

The Blazers were foiled at home by a cold second quarter with just six total points and Toronto went on to lead by as many as 26. The win extended the Raptors' winning streak over Portland to five straight games.

Damian Lillard had a season-high 36 points for the Blazers, who got within 13 in the final quarter. CJ McCollum, who had scored 20 or more points in each of Portland's first six games this season, had 16.

Kyle Lowry added a season-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds for the Raptors.

                          WARRIORS 141, CLIPPERS 113

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 31 points and Kevin Durant added 19 to help Golden State rout the Clippers for the Warriors' 11th consecutive win in the series.

The Warriors (5-3) have not lost to the Clippers since Christmas Day in 2014.

The Clippers (4-2) were the last team in the NBA to lose a game, but have now dropped two consecutive. Danilo Gallinari scored 19 points and Lou Williams added 17.

Curry hit seven of his 11 three-point attempts, and added six assists and five rebounds.

Draymond Green added 16 points for the Warriors while Klay Thompson had 15.

                              — World Series has been tied 2-2 42 times; the Game 5 winner won 28 of those 42 World Series.

                              — Knicks 116, Denver 110— Porzingis had 38, Knicks are fun to watch. I wonder why?

                              — Celtics 108, Spurs 94— San Antonio lost its last three games.

                              — Warriors 141, Clippers 113— Game was 74-57 at half; Clippers had been #1 in defense.

                              — Chiefs 29, Broncos 19— Broncos are now 0-3 on the road; their QB’s are substandard.

                              — Happy birthday to former LSU hoop coach Dale Brown, who turns 82 today.

                              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                              13) New England traded backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers last night for a 2nd-round pick next April, but the 49ers’ 2nd-round pick figures to be the 33rd pick, pretty much a first round pick. Patriots don’t have a backup QB on their roster right now; would they be the team that signs Colin Kaepernick?

                              12) Following Twitter during the baseball game Sunday night was funny; people are so fickle, they overreact quickly and in a 13-12, 10-inning game, there is a lot to comment on.

                              11) One thing the great baseball game obscured was a pretty good football game in Detroit; Lions were putrid in red zone, scoring 9 points on five drives. Steelers’ JoJo Schuster-Smith caught a 97-yard touchdown pass, right after the Lions were stuffed on a goal-line stand by Pittsburgh.

                              10) Astros’ payroll this year is $124,343,900, broken down this way:
                              — Justin Verlander makes $28M a year, but he was only in Houston for a month, so his money isn’t included in the $124M figure you see up above.
                              — Other four starting pitchers made a combined $17,239,500 this season.
                              — Catcher Brian McCann makes $17M, DH Carlos Beltran makes $16M
                              — Yuli Gurriel, Josh Reddick made a combined $27.4M this season.
                              — Altuve/Springer/Correa/Bregman earned a combined $9.661,900 this season.

At some point, Astros have to shed some of these hitters and add pitching, or else we’re in for an endless stream of 13-12 playoff games. Gurriel/Reddick’s contracts seem excessive, Altuve is going to break the bank when he hits free agency (his agent is Scott Boras)

Seems logical that out of Correa/Springer/Bregman, two of them will wind up elsewhere.

Verlander is on the books for 2018 and 2019, both at $28M a season.

                              9) Detroit Lions gained 482 yards Sunday night but didn’t score a TD; only 1994 Bengals (496 yards vs Seattle) and ’86 49ers (501 yards vs Washington) gained more yards without scoring a touchdown.

                              8) Washington Nationals named Dave Martinez manager; he has been Joe Maddon’s right-hand man for several years……….Phillies named Gabe Kapler skipper- both guys are first-time major leaguer managers.

                              7) ESPN’s Mike Breen also does play-by-play for the Knicks on MSG Network; he is the best at what he does because he is fair and smart.

Monday night, Knicks’ Doug McDermott took a 3-pointer in transition with 0:06.9 left in first quarter; he made it, but Denver came down an hit a 3-pointer of their own at the buzzer to end the quarter. Breen simply said: “That is why coaches like to hold the ball to take the last shot of a quarter, so the other team can’t score.”

                              6) Boston Celtics got an $8.4M salary cap exemption because of Gordon Hayward’s injury; they have to use it by March 10.

                              5) College basketball starts next week; Missouri Valley Conference is going downhill, with both Creighton/Wichita State jumping ship in recent years. Missouri State/Illinois State are expected to be the Valley’s frontrunners this winter.

                              4) Houston Texans traded disgruntled LT Duane Brown to Seattle, for CB Jerome Lane, a 5th round pick next year and a 2nd round draft pick in 2019.

                              3) You wonder why baseball teams coddle pitchers? Because they only last so long— look at the career of Fernando Valenzuela— from age 19-25, Valenzuela was 99-68, with an ERA of 2.94- he threw 257+ innings five years in a row. He was box office gold, for sure.

From age 26-36, he went 74-85, with an ERA of 4.55, bouncing around between five teams. You only have so many pitches in your arm. Valenzuela threw 149 pitches in a playoff game when he was 20. If that happened today (it wouldn’t), heads would roll.

                              2) Ticket brokers apparently own 15,000 tickets to both Games 6-7 of the World Series; should Houston win Game 6, those brokers would lose out of a potential $20M in profits with no Game 7 to benefit from.

                              1) RIP Lewis D’Antoni, 103, who passed away this weekend; the father of Rockets coach Mike and Marshall coach Dan D’Antoni, Lewis D’Antoni was a coach himself— I saw him interviewed in the stands at a Marshall game a couple years ago, when he was 101. Lot of energy even then; he lived a full life. RIP, sir.
