      • Friday's Tip Sheet
        November 2, 2017

Game of the Night: Celtics at Thunder – 9:35 PM EST

Both Boston and Oklahoma City overhauled its rosters in the offseason looking to make that move towards the NBA Finals. The Celtics (6-2 SU, 7-1 ATS) suffered the devastating Gordon Hayward leg injury five minutes into the season-opening loss at Cleveland, followed by a home defeat to the Bucks. Boston hasn’t lost since, running off six consecutive wins and covers, while knocking off San Antonio and Sacramento by double-digits at home.

The Celtics have been excellent on the defensive end by limiting six straight opponents to 94 points or fewer, while going 4-0 to the UNDER in four games away from TD Garden. Second-year forward Jaylen Brown scored a total of 40 points in the last two home victories, but the former Cal Golden Bear has posted nine points or fewer in each of his past three road contests. Kyrie Irving has lived up to expectations so far by averaging 21.8 points per game for Boston, while scoring below 20 points only once this season (17 against Milwaukee on October 18).

Oklahoma City (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS) returns home following a 2-1 road trip, capped off by a pair of blowouts over Chicago and Milwaukee. In Tuesday’s 110-91 rout of the Bucks, the Thunder built an 18-point halftime lead, while receiving balanced scoring from its stars (Paul George – 20, Carmelo Anthony – 17, Russell Westbrook – 12). OKC heads back on the highway following Friday’s contest for three on the road, starting on Sunday in Portland.

This series has been owned by the Thunder recently, who not only swept last season’s two-game series, but are 8-1 in the past nine matchups with the Celtics. In the matchup at Chesapeake Energy Arena last December, the Thunder edged the Celtics, 99-96 as Westbrook put up 37 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. However, OKC shot just 3-of-21 from long-distance and 14-of-27 from the foul line.

        Nightmare Start

There is still a long way to go in the season, but the Cavaliers (3-5 SU, 1-7 ATS) have been a disaster of late. The defending Eastern Conference champions have dropped four straight games, coming off Wednesday’s 124-107 home setback to the Pacers as 10-point favorites. Cleveland last won on October 24 against Chicago, but the Cavs have covered just once, coming on October 20 at Milwaukee.

The Cavs head to Washington to face a Wizards’ (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) squad that has struggled since a 3-0 start by dropping three of four. Washington squandered a 22-point second quarter lead in Wednesday’s 122-116 home setback to Phoenix as 11-point favorites. Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 40 points, but Washington has allowed at least 111 points in four of seven games this season. The road team won all three meetings last season, including Cleveland’s epic 140-135 overtime victory in D.C. last February.

        Square One Sixers

Philadelphia (4-4 SU, 6-2 ATS) reached the .500 mark with three consecutive high-scoring victories over Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. The 76ers pulled away from the Hawks to cover as a home favorite on Wednesday, 119-109 as Ben Simmons finished one assist shy of his second career triple-double (19 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists). Philadelphia has covered five straight games, as the Sixers play its final home game before hitting the road for the next five contests, starting Tuesday at Utah.

The Pacers (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS) travel to Philadelphia coming off three straight wins, including upsets of the Spurs and Cavaliers as an underdog. Indiana has covered three of four road contests this season, while looking to beat Philadelphia for the eighth time in the last nine matchups dating back to February 2015.

        Bucking Up

Milwaukee (4-4 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) will look to get on track after dropping both games of a back-to-back set against Oklahoma City and Charlotte. The Bucks have eclipsed the OVER in all three road games as they face the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena. Milwaukee dropped the first matchup with Detroit last season before capturing the final three meetings, as the Bucks held the Pistons to below 100 points three times. Detroit (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS) returns home after a successful 2-1 California road trip, highlighted by underdog victories over the Clippers and Warriors. The trip ended on a sour note with a 20-point defeat to the Lakers on Tuesday, marking the second ATS loss of the season. Detroit begins a five-game homestand with only one team (Pacers) visiting the Motor City owning an over .500 record.

        Rap it Up

Following Wednesday’s 129-111 blowout loss at Denver, the Raptors (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS) finish their six-game road swing in Utah. Toronto put together terrific defensive performances in wins over the Lakers (101-92) and the Blazers (99-85), but the Nuggets shot 53% from the floor, including knocking down 16 three-pointers as Denver led by 32 points after three quarters. The Raptors swept the Jazz last season, while owning a 7-1 SU and 8-0 ATS record in the past eight meetings with Utah.

The Jazz (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS) seek their fourth win on their four-game homestand before a quick trip to Houston on Sunday. Utah has scored below 100 points in regulation in six of the past seven games, but busted out in overtime in Wednesday’s 112-103 victory over Portland to cash as 3 ½-point favorites. Ricky Rubio paced the Jazz with 30 points, while rookie standout Donovan Mitchell posted 28 points as Utah owns the best home record in the league at 5-0.

        Suns Rising

Since an 0-3 start and firing their head coach, the Suns (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) have caught fire by winning five of their last six games. Phoenix is riding a 5-0 ATS streak, capped off by an incredible comeback in Wednesday’s 122-116 upset of Washington as 11-point underdogs. T.J. Warren burned the Wizards for 40 points, while the Suns have won each of their four games in the ‘dog role. Phoenix continues its road swing in New York as the Suns swept the Knicks last season with both victories coming by two points apiece.

The Knicks (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt in Wednesday’s 119-97 home setback to the Rockets as 5 ½-point underdogs. New York dropped to 0-3 when scoring below 100 points, while losing each of those games by 20 points or more. The Knicks closed last season by going 0-6 ATS in their last six opportunities as a favorite, but covered in their only chance as chalk this season against the Nets, 107-86.

        Head-to-Head Matchups

-- The Bulls continue their trek through the Sunshine State following Wednesday’s six-point setback at Miami as Chicago heads to Orlando. The Magic have won five of their last six games, including underdog victories at New Orleans and Memphis this week. Chicago captured three of four meetings last season, but the Magic are 4-1 in the past five home matchups against the Bulls.

-- The Rockets snapped a two-game skid in Wednesday’s 119-97 blowout of the Knicks as Houston finishes up its two-game away swing in Atlanta. The Hawks have dropped seven straight games since beating Dallas on opening night, but Atlanta is 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS the last seven meetings with Houston since 2014.

-- The Pelicans hit the road following home setbacks to the Magic and Wolves as New Orleans goes to Dallas to face the 1-8 Mavericks. The home team went 4-0 last season between these Southwest squads, as the Mavericks covered in three of four games, including twice as a home underdog.

-- San Antonio finishes up a back-to-back home set against Charlotte, looking to beat the Hornets at home for the 11th straight time. The Hornets have never scored more than 98 points in 13 trips to San Antonio since entering the league in 2004. Charlotte is riding a three-game winning streak, but has lost two of three games away from home.

-- The Heat embark on a six-game road swing with the first five games coming against Western Conference opponents. Miami is the only team in the league that has failed to cover a game, entering Friday’s action at Denver with an 0-5-2 ATS record. The road team won each meeting last season as the Heat knocked off the Nuggets in Denver, 106-98, while Miami is 4-1 in its last five trips to Pepsi Center.

-- The Nets also head out west for five games starting in Los Angeles against the unrested Lakers. Brooklyn and L.A. split a pair of meetings last season with the home team winning each time. The Nets have yet to win a game away from Barclays Center this season, while losing 19 of their last 24 road contests since January.

          Friday NBA Best Bet
          Houston Rockets vs Atlanta Hawks

We've got a big board of 12 NBA games on the schedule tonight, and with high profile matchups like Cleveland/Washington and Boston/OKC, this Houston/Atlanta game isn't going to be one that's going to get most of the attention. The attention this game has gotten already has been all focused on Houston as they are a legit contender while Atlanta's in tank mode, but covering big numbers as a road favorite in the NBA is always tough.

Can Houston get it done tonight?

BetDSI.eu Odds: Houston (-9); Total set at 215.5

At 1-7 SU and 2-5-1 ATS, the Atlanta Hawks have been a popular team to fade already this year. Everyone knows the Hawks decided to go the route of a full-blown rebuild over the summer and this year was expected to be a rough one. So far that's definitely the case, as the Hawks lone outright win came in their first game of the year (117-111 over Dallas) and have lost seven in a row entering tonight. The average margin of defeat in those losses sits at 10.28 points per game so it's easy to see why fading the Hawks is a strategy many aren't afraid to employ.

In comes a Rockets team tonight that is coming off a dominant win over New York to snap a two-game losing streak. The 20-point win was Houston's biggest margin of victory so far this year, and they conclude this mini-two game road trip against a Hawks team many expect them to handle rather easily. VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers on this game already show more then 80% of the wagers on the side are in support of the Rockets, and given their dynamic offense that loves to jack up the three-ball, many feel that scoring on the Hawks tonight won't be an issue. After all, Atlanta has allowed at least 104 points against in all but one of their games so far this year and is coming off consecutive games of giving up 117 and 119.

But while an 'over' play does have some credence tonight, it's the side I'm wagering on and I'll definitely be in the minority by grabbing the points with Atlanta. Yes, the Hawks are going to be one of the league's worst teams this year and they give up plenty of points, but this team can score too. Playing a strong 48 minutes of basketball hasn't happened for Atlanta since that opening game, but against a Rockets team that isn't exactly known for their defense and could easily be looking past Atlanta tonight, if the Hawks can routinely fill up the bucket, I do believe they keep it within this large number.

For one, I get that the respective rosters are much different this year, but Houston has always had a tough time with Atlanta in recent years. In fact, The Hawks are 7-0 SU (6-1 ATS) in their last seven games against Houston the past few seasons, and that run includes four outright victories as an underdog. Chances are Atlanta doesn't win this game outright, but eventually some sort of professional pride has to kick in for these guys and knocking off a top tier team like Houston would be quite the feather in the cap this early in the year for the Hawks.

Secondly, for all of Houston's offensive talent, they are known to go rather cold for long stretches at a time. It was two games ago in a 115-107 home loss to Philadelphia that the Rockets were outscored by 10 points in the 1st and 3rd quarters, and after battling back late to make in a one-point deficit, the Rockets proceeded to not score a single FG for the final 2+ minutes of that game as Philly pulled away late. Houston really is a team that lives and dies by the three-ball and their offensive shooting percentage, and if you can catch them on an off night, possibly when they are disinterested or taking a team lightly (ie tonight), fading the Rockets and their inflated point spreads will be profitable.

I'm banking on that being the case tonight as the Rockets do have a couple of big home games on deck (vs Utah, vs Cleveland), as the struggles of this organization continue to a degree against Atlanta. It's an unpopular play that you might have to close your eyes on when you click submit, but look for this game to be a lot closer then this point spread suggests.

          Odds per - BetDSI.eu

          Best Bet: Atlanta +9

            • NBA roundup: James scores 57 in Cavs' win
              November 3, 2017

WASHINGTON -- LeBron James had the second-highest scoring performance of his career with 57 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 130-122 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

James sank 23 of 34 shots, including two 3-pointers, made all nine of his free-throw attempts and had 11 rebounds with seven assists in a dominant performance befitting a four-time league Most Valuable Player. He finished within four of his career-high set March 3, 2014, against Charlotte.

Derrick Rose added 20 points for the Cavaliers, whose slide included three double-digit losses.

Bradley Beal scored 36 points for the Wizards, who have lost four of five. John Wall had 13 points and 15 assists.

              Rockets 119, Hawks 104

ATLANTA -- James Harden had 29 points and 11 assists before sitting the fourth quarter as Houston bombed away early and often from behind the 3-point arc to beat Atlanta.

Harden was 6 of 11 from on 3-point shots, and the Rockets took 47 of their 89 shots from behind the 3-point arc, making 16.

The Rockets had lost seven straight games overall to the Hawks and hadn't won in Atlanta since a 109-102 victory on Nov. 2, 2012.

Kent Bazemore scored 18 for the Hawks, who dropped their eighth straight.

              Bulls 105, Magic 83

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Justin Holiday scored 19 points and David Nwaba added 16 points to lead Chicago to a surprisingly easy victory over Orlando, which had been 3-0 at home.

The Bulls never trailed after grabbing the lead early in the second half, coasting past the Magic, who had won five of their previous six games.

                        • NBA roundup: Pistons stay hot at new arena
                          November 5, 2017

DETROIT -- For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Detroit Pistons are off to a 7-3 start following a 108-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

The Pistons, who are 4-1 at home, have played in front of paltry crowds so far in their new home, Little Caesars Arena, but hope that their recent hot streak will bring more fans to the turnstiles.

Detroit has now won five of its last six games and improved to 2-0 on the start of a five-game homestand.

Avery Bradley led the way with 24 points, Harris scored 20 points, and Andre Drummond had 16 points and 19 rebounds.

The Kings lost their seventh straight game and have started 1-8 for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

                          Pelicans 96, Bulls 90 (OT)

CHICAGO -- Anthony Davis collected 27 points and 16 rebounds and DeMarcus Cousins scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds as New Orleans won for the second straight night to get to .500 on the season.

Jameer Nelson scored 13 points for New Orleans, and his long shot with 48 seconds left in overtime gave the Pelicans an eight-point lead.

Justin Holiday led the Bulls with 18 points and Denzel Valentine finished with 16 points.

                          Grizzlies 113, Clippers 104

LOS ANGELES -- Mike Conley scored 22 points to lead seven Memphis players in double figures in the Grizzlies' win.

Memphis got key contributions off the bench from guards Tyreke Evans (20 points) and Mario Chalmers (12 points).

Los Angeles shot a miserable 15.4 percent from 3-point range (4 of 26).

Blake Griffin led the Clippers with a season-high 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

                          Timberwolves 112, Mavericks 99

MINNEAPOLIS -- Karl-Anthony Towns recovered from the worst offensive performance of his career by scoring 31 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 23 points to lead Minnesota.

The Timberwolves have won four in a row as Minnesota won four in a row for the first time since December 2012.

Towns was held to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting in a win against New Orleans on Wednesday, but the third-year center had his way with Dallas. He added 12 rebounds and three blocks, notching his seventh double-double in nine games this season.

The Mavericks are 1-10, their worst start since going 1-23 to start the 1993-94 season.

                          Warriors 127, Nuggets 108

DENVER - Kevin Durant scored 25 points, Stephen Curry had 22 points and 11 assists, and Golden State routed the Denver.

Draymond Green had 15 points, eight assists and seven assists and Klay Thompson scored 15 points for Golden State, which has won three straight and six of its last seven.

Will Barton had 21 points and eight rebounds and Emmanuel Mudiay scored 15 points for Denver, which lost the second game of a home back-to-back. No Nuggets starter scored in double figures.

The Warriors outscored the Nuggets 27-6 during a stretch where it turned a five-point lead into an 87-61 advantage halfway through the third quarter.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                              13) Northwestern 31, Nebraska 24 OT— Wildcats are first I-A team EVER to win three consecutive games in overtime. Someday they’re going to put a statue of Pat Fitzgerald outside the stadium in Evanston. As for Nebraska, they’ll be looking for a new coach soon.

                              12) Oklahoma 62, Oklahoma State 52— Do the kids in Oklahoma’s band ever get sick of playing Boomer Sooner? They must hear it in their sleep. Baker Mayfield threw for 598 yards in an Arena Football game played outdoors. Neither one of these teams plays much defense.

                              11) Iowa 55, Ohio State 24— This score isn’t a misprint; this doesn’t happen much, but when you’re -4 in turnovers, you lose. Buckeyes beat Penn State 39-38 LW, so they’ve allowed 93 points in their last two games- no bueno.

                              10) Wyoming 16, Colorado State 13— It poured rain in second quarter of this game, then it snowed most of the second half. Must be great fun living in Wyoming.

I think Wyoming QB Josh Allen will be the best NFL QB of guys playing in college right now; he doesn’t have lot of NFL talent around him, like the USC or Ohio State QB’s do.

                              9) Miami 28, Virginia Tech 10— Unbeaten Hurricanes were a home underdog early in week, but by Saturday, they were a small favorite. Lot of times, “hot teams” like that get hammered and sportsbooks clean up, but not this week. Miami-Notre Dame is a big game next week.

                              8) Bad Beat of the Decade Nominee: Florida Atlantic (-6.5) 30, Marshall 25— If you bet FAU -6.5 Friday night, skip to the next item. Owls led 30-23, had the ball on their own 43-yard line with 2:30 left and Marshall was out of timeouts. After taking a knee with losses of 5-9-5 yards, on 4th down from their own 24-yard line with 0:15 left, FAU took a safety, and didn’t cover the spread. The punter ran 11 yards back into the end zone for the safety.

To make matters worse, FAU coach Lane Kiffin made a snarky joke about it after the game. There has been lot of debate on Twitter on whether this was sound strategy or not- FAU won, so Kiffin did his job, but to me, punting the ball out of bounds would’ve been just as safe a play.

                              7) Ole Miss 37, Kentucky 34— Receiver on Ole Miss made a great catch in back left corner of the end zone with 0:05 left for the game-winning TD, after a replay reversal on a possible Ole Miss fumble kept the drive alive.

                              6) Michigan State 27, Penn State 24— Nittany Lions were headed to the national playoff, then lost the last two weeks, by a combined total of four points. The game started at noon and ended a little after 7— there was a 3.5-hour weather delay. Cruddy day in the midwest Saturday.

Michigan State is 11-4 in its last 15 games that were decided by 5 or less points.

                              5) Virginia 40, Georgia Tech 36— Tech is now 4-4; all four of their wins are by 14+ points- three of their four losses are by a total of six points. Yellow Jackets completed only 6-22 passes, which isn’t acceptable.

                              4) Army 21, Air Force 0— Then there is Army, which won this game without throwing one pass. Zero. Bupkus. But no incompletions, compared to 16 empty plays for Ga Tech. Imagine Army playing East Carolina? ECU threw 74 passes Saturday.

                              3) Upsets of the Week:
                              Iowa 55 (+17.5), Ohio State 24
                              Virginia (+9.5) 40, Georgia Tech 36
                              UL-Monroe (+9.5) 52, Appalachian State 45
                              Michigan State (+9) 27, Penn State 24
                              Temple (+8) 34, Navy 26
                              Army (+6.5) 21, Air Force 0

                              2) Notre Dame 48, Wake Forest 37— Total yardage was 710-587; Demon Deacons covered via the back door with 0:51 left. Notre Dame plays lot of ACC teams as the price for their basketball team being allowed to play in the ACC. Fighting Irish visit Miami next week; big game.

                              1) Arkansas 39, Coastal Carolina 38— Chanticleers are 1-8 in their first year of I-A football; they led this game 38-25 with 11:00 left to play. No way the natives in Arkansas are happy with this result, even though the home team won. Hogs need to win 2 of 3 to finish season to make a bowl at 6-6- they play LSU, Miss State, Missouri. Bret Bielema’s job could depend on it.
